Crew begins Word Search filming movie across Sumter ‘Old Man and the Pond’ has ‘well-known Hollywood’ actor
PHOTO PROVIDED Producer John Lerchen and Jason Mac, star, writer and director of “The Old Man and the Pond,” now being shot in Sumter, confer over the working screenplay for the feature-length film. Mac (McElveen) is a Sumter native who has an extensive list of film and TV credits. Lerchen is producing the film through his company, Forever Safe Productions.
BY IVY MOORE Special to The Sumter Item The film crew you may see around town this week is in the process of making “The Old Man and the Pond,” a feature-length movie written and now being directed by Sumter native Jason Mac (McElveen). McElveen is also the star of the film being produced by John Lerchen, an actor and a member of the Producers Guild of America. Filming began last week and will continue through Oct. 19, Lerchen said. Through his Forever Safe Productions, based in Los Angeles, Lerchen also produced the 2009 series “The Vampire Diaries” and 2018’s “The Shelter,” as well as feature-length films and shorts. McElveen is the son of Gwen McElveen and a 2003 graduate of Sumter High School. His extensive list of acting, writing, directing and producing credits can be found online on IMDb (Internet Movie Database) under “Jason Mac.” Lerchen said settings for “The Old Man and the Pond” include “Jason’s pond home, the (Sumter County) Courthouse, downtown Sumter and the Thompson warehouses.” Several local actors will be in the film, which has already been cast, as well as some from Atlanta and a well-known Hollywood film actor, he said. While the film’s working title is “a definite play on (Ernest Hemingway’s) ‘The Old Man and the Sea,’” the story itself is unrelated, McElveen said, adding that it is set in current times. “The film will be a family friendly drama and centers on Nick Wolfe, who is searching for his estranged father,” Lerchen said. “During his journey, he meets Billy Forde, an old man in the woods who has his fair share of secrets. The unlikely duo strike up a friendship, which may change each other for the better.” He said, “The majority of principal photography takes place in Sumter and is being shot with an Arri Alexa Mini” motion picture camera. “The community has been great to us,” Lerchen said. “They’ve gone out of their way to help us.” Once the filming is complete, he said, “The movie will go through a rigorous post-production schedule, which generally takes about a year.” When it is completed, McElveen plans to show “The Old Man and the Pond” to local residents at Sumter Opera House.

‘Charmed’ Ones
LEO
(From left) Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery and Madeleine Mantock star in The CW’s reboot of “Charmed,” premiering Sunday.
Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, Kaley Cuoco and others led “Charmed” lives. Now, three more actresses are under the show’s spell. Helping The CW launch an additional night of programming Sunday, Oct. 14, the new reboot of the series casts Sarah Jeffery (“Shades of Blue”), Melonie Diaz and Madeleine Mantock as sister witches – one of whom has been unknown to the others – who unite their special abilities to form the Power of Three following their mother’s death. A presumed university professor (Rupert Evans) is their “Whitelighter,” advising them on protecting mankind from evil. Several “Jane the Virgin” veterans, including Jennie Snyder Urman, are among the executive producers of the new “Charmed.” In giving the central characters an ethnic diversity, Urman says, “Most of the people I’ve talked to are happy that they’re not white, because we’ve had a chance to see three white witches. Obviously, coming off of ‘Jane,’ I know so much more about what it means to see yourself on screen, see yourself represented, and see yourself be the hero of a story – and that was really important to us. I haven’t felt the ‘not white’ backlash. I’ve felt the ‘This is not the same story that was once told’ backlash.”
BY JAY BOBBIN
Among those fostering the latter has been original “Charmed” co-star Holly Marie Combs, who tweeted, after the new version’s pickup, her hope that the show’s “true legacy does remain.” (Combs and Alyssa Milano spanned the first series’ entire run.) Actress Diaz notes, “I think that there’s also a lot of positive stuff coming out, and we’ve collectively made a decision to focus on that, because this is such a great place to be and to create this show with people who I love.” Coming off three seasons of playing Jennifer Lopez’s daughter, Jeffery adds, “We understand that (‘Charmed’ is) such a sacred thing to so many people, not only to the cast, but to the fans ...so we’re very grateful, and we get it. We do get it.” The new “Charmed” stars are familiar with the original show, which ran from 1998 to 2006, though the experience was a bit different for Mantock. “I grew up in the UK,” she explains, “and it used to rerun on Channel 5 (there), so I was definitely aware of it. Before we started shooting, I made sure to watch the pilot, because I wanted to see the little Easter eggs that we had laid in our script to pay homage. I hadn’t seen the whole eight seasons, but I knew who the characters were, because it was such a pop-culture moment. I don’t think there’s anybody who doesn’t know who those girls are and what ‘Charmed’ is.”
You’ll work a few hours of overtime, which will temporarily improve your financial situation. Afterwards, you’ll feel more available to focus your efforts on your relationship, which is in great need of attention.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Anna Kendrick’s Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “The Accountant” (2016): Kendrick makes a solid match for Ben Affleck as she plays a Treasury Department analyst in need of his character’s special help when she learns too much. “Trolls” (2016): Even in voice only, Kendrick is a delight as she speaks the words of the animated Poppy, a very optimistic Troll who sets out to save her friends from enemies. “Into the Woods” (2014): Not playing your parents’ Cinderella, Kendrick clearly has a good time putting her spins on the character in the Stephen SondheimJames Lapine musical. “Cake” (2014): Though the movie belongs to Jennifer Aniston, Kendrick’s portrayal of a suicidal woman is an important catalyst to the drama. “The Last Five Years” (2014): The singing skill of Kendrick is a must for this fine adaptation of a stage show as she and Jeremy Jordan (“Supergirl”) trace a relationship in reverse, largely through music. “Rapture-Palooza” (2013): Kendrick’s combination of smarts and controlled goofiness works well for this postapocalyptic satire. “Pitch Perfect” (2012): Not only did Kendrick have a major hit with this story of competition between a cappella groups, she also scored a hit song off it (“Cups”). “50/50” (2011): Sensitivity and charm are Kendrick’s trademarks as the novice therapist to a cancer patient (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). “Up in the Air” (2009): An Oscar nomination was among Kendrick’s rewards for her work as a driven efficiency expert for a firm that assists in downsizing companies. “Twilight” (2008): Kendrick began to get a foothold in the movie world as this popular franchise’s Jessica, a role she would repeat in subsequent chapters.

Anna Kendrick
Especially now, when so many movies don’t have a solid leading role for even one actress, it’s interesting to see a film that offers two. “A Simple Favor” does that, and it’s so much fun in the early going, you hope it will hold up all the way through ... especially since it’s from Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids.” It doesn’t, but stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively supply enough to enjoy along the way that it’s still worth recommending. Kendrick plays a video-blogging widow and mom who meets – and instantly becomes dazzled by – the stylish Lively, since both have children who go to the same Connecticut school. They become fast friends, leaving Kendrick puzzled and dismayed when Lively suddenly disappears. Of course, she’s determined to find out why. Those who know the books and/or movies “The Girl on the Train” and “Gone Girl” are sure to recognize that theme from recent vintage, though “A Simple Favor” plays it a bit more lightly. That’s thanks largely to the focus staying on Kendrick, whose familiar “type-A” personality services the story well. However, there’s more to that in the role, which also blends in the feeling of desperation that informs the character. The woman is missing something in her life and knows it, and as is the case in so many situations, she believes she’s found that needed “thing” in somebody else. (It’s not for nothing that her alter ego’s last name is “Smothers.”) And when that greatly welcome element vanishes without warning, the desperation not only returns, but intensifies. “A Simple Favor” is at its best when it lets its two lead actresses play into their images and contrast them. Lively is supremely poised and self-assured, and Kendrick ... well, as mentioned, not so much. Henry Golding, who’s been riding on a major hit with “Crazy Rich Asians,” also is present as Lively’s husband. Andrew Rannells and Rupert Friend also turn up. The picture’s dramatic aspects may be a bit of a surprise coming from Feig, who largely has based his career in comedy, but “The Heat” and “Spy” also blended styles under his directorial guidance. And, on the television front, so did “Freaks and Geeks” and “Arrested Development.” Even if the promise of “A Simple Favor” falls apart by the final act, it gives two female stars some choice moments on the screen together. And these days, that’s a favor in and of itself.

Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd
Movie Review
He may be small in size, but AntMan is big on entertainment – as proven by this sequel, actually more enjoyable than the first film in certain ways.
There’s sufficient mayhem in the Marvel tradition, but also a very welcome and substantial dose of humor. Paul Rudd is back as a star and co-writer as Ant-Man’s mission involves something else of changeable size ... the lab of scientist Hank Pym (again played by Michael Douglas). Bad guys want that lab, and also involved in making sure they don’t get it is Pym’s daughter, who becomes the new Wasp as played by Evangeline Lilly.
Michelle Pfeiffer plays her mother, the original Wasp. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“WHITNEY” With the approval of the late music superstar’s estate, director Kevin Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland”) delves into Whitney Houston’s mystique through rare audio and video clips and new interviews. The content follows her road to becoming one of
the most successful female performers in music history. The film follows Houston’s move into movies, leading to a hit with “The Bodyguard” (costar Kevin Costner is among the interviewees here), but it also examines her tumultuous personal life. Her relationships with husband Bobby Brown and daughter Bobbi Kristina are examined, as is the tragic and premature end of Houston’s life. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on On Demand)
