Extra performances added for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Word Search Sumter Little Theatre to have 10 total performances BY IVY MOORE Special to The Sumter Item Every element in Sumter Little Theatre’s “Little Shop of Horrors” is on track to make it one of SLT’s best, the show’s director said. In fact, the theater has added an extra weekend of performances “because we want everyone to have a chance to see it,” Eric Bultman said. It has been 10 years since SLT first presented “Little Shop,” and many people were unable to get tickets because the show was so well-received, Bultman said, explaining the added shows. The musical will be presented Oct. 18 through 21, 25 through 28 and Nov. 2 and 3. An opening reception will be held Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Patriot Hall in conjunction with the Fall for the Arts Student Art Exhibit. One of the most important elements of “Little Shop” is the mysterious plant, Audrey II, which local artist Heidi Adler made for the 2008 production. Bultman said the plant has had “only minor touch-ups. Michael Duffy did an amazing job restoring it.” David Shoemaker, technical director, who has never acted on the SLT stage, voices the plant and sings its songs, Bultman said. “ He’s having a ball, and he does a wonderful job. He also built the set and designed the lighting,” Bultman said. The play begins when Seymour Krelborn, a young employee of Mushnik’s Skid Row Florists, finds a plant that appears suddenly during an eclipse. Seymour, played by Todd Warrick, takes the plant to the flower shop and names it Audrey II after his crush, Audrey Mushnick, played by Cierra Stewart. The plant seems to be dying until it drinks blood from Seymour’s accidentally pricked finger. Audrey II soon becomes the “horror” in the little shop. Bultman said the music in “Little Shop” is also memorable. “The second song, ‘Skid Row,’ is the exposition song,” he said. “The actors sing about themselves and their aspirations, how they’ve got to get out of their situations. Their savior is the plant, which brings in a lot of customers. Only it’s not a nice plant - it’s an evil plant.” To keep Audrey II thriving and growing, Bultman said, “You have to sacrifice your friends and family. You’re in its power. You have to keep it alive, or you’ll never get out of Skid Row. It’s the main attraction.” Warrick said “Little Shop of Horrors” is his favorite musical comedy, and Seymour is the role he’s always wanted to play. “This is my fifth show here,” he said. “I’ve always been a fan of musical theater, and I love the opportunity to sing, dance and perform. This is just a sweet, funny show with great music.” In 2010, Stewart played Chiffon, a member of the Doo-wop trio that served as a kind of Greek chorus for “Little Shop,” their songs helping to move the story along. She said she loves her role as Audrey Mushnick because “she’s nice and innocent.” Stewart solos on “Somewhere That’s Green” and has a duet with Warrick on “Suddenly Seymour,” which she described as “our power ballad.” The doo-wop trio for the current production comprises Aaleyah Powell, Jaycie Wisor and Keonna Porter. John Michael Osteen is the florist shop owner and father to Audrey; Alyssa Gibbs and Matt Wilt have multiple roles. Andrew Lawrence will manipulate Audrey II. Bultman said music director and voice coach Linda Beck has put together an excellent band: “It’ll blow your socks off.” Orchestra leader Beck on piano is joined by Sean Hackett, Evan Thompson, Brandon Graves, Dave Auerbach, Darren Polutta and Barry Simpson. Libby Singleton is choreographer. Stage manager is Colby Rearden; Sylvia Pickell and Norma Holland made the costumes; and Michael Bacon is lighting and sound operator. Set construction and painting was by Shoemaker, Kendall Jones, Jennica Greco, Braden Bunch, Treva Walker, Warrick and Stewart. Pickell, Greco and Jones are in charge of props. The backstage crew comprises Kendall Jones, Greco, Brittan Jones, Bill Tawfan, Rhiannon Lemon, Bri Gray, Hugh China, Melanie Leone, Traga Schaare and Nancy Reading. There will be art exhibit by Sarah Jones in the SLT lobby.

Residents grapple with demons internal and otherwise in Season 2 of
CANCER Much to your surprise, you’ll experience a surge in popularity this week. You’ll let your intuition guide you and feel highly creative. One of your artistic creations may bring you great success.
‘Midnight Texas’ “Midnight, Texas” begins its second season Friday on NBC.
LEO
BY GEORGE DICKIE
Time is a scarce commodity for many. Even if you manage your schedule perfectly, you’ll still find yourself waiting for other people sometimes. Try to be more patient.
VIRGO
With the demon Colconnar vanquished, it appears life will go back to normal for the denizens of “Midnight, Texas” in Season 2 of the NBC supernatural drama. But really, in a town inhabited by, among others, a vampire, a witch, a fallen angel and a shapeshifter, what exactly is normal? “Well, here’s the thing,” says Peter Mensah, who plays vampire Lemuel. “Can you ever really beat the demons back entirely? I mean, what would be the point if they were completely gone? So there’s always going to be something to work with.” As the new season opens Friday, Oct. 26, the residents are faced with a new set of challenges, headed by the arrival of newcomers Kai and Patience (Nestor Carbonell, Jaime Ray Newman), two New Agers who have transformed the old hotel in town into a spa and resort, and thus have raised suspicions. Witch Fiji and human Bobo’s (Parisa Fitz-Henley, Dylan Bruce) amorous escapades continue full speed ahead after their tryst at the end of last season. And newlywed Lem and his hitwoman bride Olivia (Arielle Kebbel) find the psychic connection that resulted from him giving her blood in the Season 1 finale has given them a case of TMI. “Lem discovers what it’s like to really be married,” Mensah explains. “It’s not as easy as you would think, especially if you’re a vampire and your wife happens to be human. And the particular human he married is quite complex, so in getting to know his wife and her background a little bit more, especially in the heightened world of Midnight, I think Lem finds himself a little bit out of his depth from time to time, which I think a lot of marrieds have gone through. ...”
“If you’re suddenly slammed into knowing everything about each other, what do you do?” he continues. “And as much as you might love someone, I think we know as adults that sometimes the best relationships often give each other privacy, and when you don’t have that it can be quite difficult.” Also having their problems are Manfred and Creek (Francois Arnaud, Sarah Ramos) – he because he’s still suffering repercussions from his demonic possession in Season 1, and she because she’s dealt with nutty behavior in her own family and she just doesn’t have the patience. “She has very little tolerance for Manfred’s antics,” Arnaud says of Creek, who becomes a recurring character this season. “And Manfred’s ... still oozing black goo out of his ears and having these horrible nightmares where he’s hurting the ones he loves, and are they dreams or reality? So Creek has had enough and I think she finds it difficult to cope with.” In the end, the good folk of Midnight may realize the enemy may be a very familiar party. “I think it’s always been a part of Midnight,” Arnaud says. “It’s always been about controlling our inner demons and our evil impulses, whether it’s the vampire or the weretiger or someone who’s possessed by evil energy. I think there’s parallels to be drawn with regular humans, who are tempted or faced with difficult decisions to make, that at some point, whether it’s just to do good or evil. So I think the threat has always been among the Midnighters themselves.”
As the colder weather sets in, you’ll start to daydream about setting sail to a sunny locale. You’ll work exceptionally hard at the office to be able to afford your trip. Keep your eyes peeled: an incredible deal might be hiding in plain sight.
LIBRA You’ll finally succeed in making a living from your art. You’ll make several big changes in your life and embark on a brand new path. A plan to solidify your romantic relationship is in the works; this may take the shape of a marriage proposal.
SCORPIO Put more effort into your social life if you wish to maintain close ties to the people who matter most. The idea of moving to a new town will cross your mind. You’ll feel the need for a change of scenery.
SAGITTARIUS Even though one of your projects will require a bigger time investment than you initially thought, you’ll be proud of your perseverance. You’ll feel relieved to finally accomplish what you’ve been constantly postponing.
CAPRICORN You’ll treat yourself to some new clothes, either to boost your selfesteem or to improve your chances of getting a promotion at work. Your efforts will pay off and success will be yours.
AQUARIUS You’ll feel like cleaning your house from top to bottom this week. Ridding your home of needless clutter will also clear your thoughts and give you a clearer perspective on the things that matter.
PISCES Expect communication to be a tad tedious this week. Even if you leave several voicemails, you may have to wait a while to get a call back. Be careful not to get lost on the way to your destination.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Olivia Wilde and Oscar Isaac
BY JAY BOBBIN
“20th Century Women” (2016):
Doing customarily strong work, Bening plays the mother of a teenager (Lucas Jade Zumann) who has plenty of female influences in the late 1970s. “The Kids Are All Right” (2010): Bening is first-rate as a partner in a same-sex relationship who’s alarmed when her children locate their sperm-donor father. “Running With Scissors” (2006): Director-screenwriter Ryan Murphy’s seriocomic film features a notable Bening as an emotionally unsteady would-be actress. “Being Julia” (2004): Bening scored an Oscar bid as an actress still feeling the guidance of her late mentor (Michael Gambon) in trying to handle her relationships. “American Beauty” (1999): An Oscar-nominated Bening plays the mutually despising, unfaithful wife of a man who recalls changing his life toward the end of it. “The Siege” (1998): Bening is superb as a CIA agent who clashes with an FBI man (Denzel Washington) as they both try to stop terrorist attacks in New York. “The American President” (1995): A delightful Bening plays a lobbyist who falls for – you guessed it – the American president (Michael Douglas) while trying to win his support for a bill she’s promoting. “Bugsy” (1991): Bening is effective as mobster Bugsy Siegel’s love Virginia Hill, but much of the attention she got here was for the start of her relationship with title star Warren Beatty. “Regarding Henry” (1991): Though Harrison Ford has the title role, much of the heavy lifting falls to Bening as the emotionally overwhelmed wife of a shooting victim. “The Grifters” (1990): Bening made a big career mark as a con artist locked in a struggle with another one (Anjelica Huston) over the latter’s fellowgrifter son (John Cusack).
‘Life Itself’ is a big-screen ‘This Is Us’ It’s interesting what can happen when a concept that’s been successful on television is transferred to the movie screen. “Life Itself” is written and directed by Dan Fogelman, who’s had a huge TV success with “This Is Us.” If you know that show, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that his movie explores many of the same relationship-development themes – after all, it’s from the same person – but apparently having higher standards and expectations for it, since a lot of critics have been jumping all over it. And that’s ... well, odd. And it’s worth examining. Admittedly, film critics aren’t necessarily television critics, but a story is a story and a theme is a theme, no matter which medium it’s told in. Ratings bear out that a great many people appreciate what Fogelman does,

Cher 12 • The Sumter Scene • October 21 - 27, 2018
Apparently, having every other key cast member return – plus a previously untapped part of the ABBA catalog – was enough to greenlight this very
musical sequel, though there is a reminder of Streep’s Donna along the way. Largely, though, the character is presented by flashbacks to her earlier years ... when she’s portrayed by Lily James. The premise is that her daughter (again played by Amanda Seyfried) is planning a big relaunch of Mom’s Greek resort, and it’s a matter of whether several key people will show up. Since Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard are all in the cast list again, it’s not much of a mystery. Christine Baranski and Julie Walters generate some fun again as
and his TV efforts undoubtedly secured him the backing to make this particular movie. The underlying reasoning is obvious: If people are watching what he does at home in great numbers each week, why wouldn’t they show up at theaters to watch it, too? Simply, if you like “This Is Us,” you’ll like “Life Itself.” It connects the stories of several seemingly unrelated people, and it does so with a surplus of emotion – but again, that’s what Fogelman does. Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde play a New York couple having problems, with Annette Bening as his much-needed therapist, since his emotional difficulties are large contributors to the domestic troubles. On another note, and on a different continent, Antonio Banderas plays a Spanish landowner who gets to know quite a bit about his new foreman’s (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) personal life. Mandy Patinkin, Jean Smart, Olivia Cooke and (as himself) Samuel L. Jackson also figure in as the tale unfolds. Perhaps that should be “tales” more accurately, since the various roads eventually merge, as has proven to be the specialty of Fogelman. In two hours, “Life Itself” tries to accomplish what “This Is Us” has done in two full seasons, now embarking on three. Trying to do so much in a short time may be much of the problem some people are having with it, since the fine cast has only so long to evoke the desired audience response – but again, this is Dan Fogelman’s turf, so it’s no surprise. Ultimately, “Life Itself” delivers what it promises. It may not be for everyone, but hey ... that’s life.
Donna’s pals, but the really big arrival comes well into the picture: Cher as Donna’s mother. This follow-up offers its share of entertainment, but just don’t expect a bounty of Streep. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
“THE AMERICANS: THE COMPLETE FINAL SEASON” One of television’s most acclaimed series of recent years came to its end with this concluding round of the FX drama about Russian spies
– played by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys – posing as a U.S. couple. They initially go their separate ways professionally here, but that expectedly doesn’t last long, with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev a factor in what transpires. Their daughter’s (Holly Taylor) entry into the espionage game complicates matters. Both Russell and Rhys scored Emmy nominations for their work here, along with the entire show itself. Margo Martindale and Noah Emmerich also wrap up their roles. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V)

The term “alternate universe” definitely applies to hip-hop artist Boots Riley’s satire set in a version of Oakland, Calif., that is “heightened” to say the least. A telemarketer (played by “Atlanta’s” Lakeith Stanfield) follows a colleague’s (Danny Glover) suggestion to take a different approach to the job, which elevates him to great success – but he soon worries about having his new status, which is ironic in a society in which a company called WorryFree offers payment-free living in exchange for employment for life. Writer-director Riley’s noteworthy cast also includes Tessa Thompson, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Armie Hammer, Forest Whitaker and Rosario Dawson. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Riley; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Also the name of a classic pop tune, the title of this Sundance Film Festival-honored fantasy-drama from director Reed Morano (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) indicates the situation of the dissimilar lead characters after the elimination of most of the human race. One, played by Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), is quite happy to be completely on his own – until someone else (Elle Fanning) enters the picture, for reasons he’s not entirely sure of. Those two actors clearly have the lion’s share of the movie, but Charlotte Gainsbourg and Paul Giamatti (“Billions”) also turn up. Morano doubled as the picture’s director of photography. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

One of the more charming cable movies presented last holiday season, this romantic comedy-drama – originally shown on Lifetime – casts Bethany Joy Lenz (“One Tree Hill”) and Andrew Walker as dissimilar journalists stranded together in the Midwestern location of a seasonally themed attraction that may be forced to close. As they try to save the place, they discover sides of each other they didn’t know ... and (surprise, surprise) start to fall for each other. The film is paired on DVD with another holiday attraction, “Wrapped Up in Christmas,” starring Kim Fields, Jasmine Guy and Tatyana Ali. ››› (Not rated: AS)

As the holiday season nears, those who love it – and especially those who also love country-music stars – might want an early taste of it from this release. Recorded in the genre’s capital, it features a number of veteran country stars performing traditional yuletide tunes. Emmylou Harris (a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award this year), Wynonna Judd, Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan are among the headliners, along with rock-gospel star Ashley Cleveland and bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent. The artists also reflect on particularly memorable holidays they’ve experienced. ››› (Not rated)
