Sumter woman finds out someone really does win raffles BY DANNY KELLY danny@theitem.com Rosie Brown, a resident of Wedgefield, did not expect to win a golf cart when she bought a ticket for the Sumter Marine Corps League Detachment’s Toys for Tots campaign; she was merely making a donation for a good cause. She ended up winning the raffle and is now the owner of a $4,000 Club Car Precedent Cart. “I bought one ticket and didn’t think I would win,” Brown said. “I was not playing to win a golf cart; I wanted to give them something. I didn’t realize anyone actually won those things, and my daughter said the same thing.” Many members of Brown’s family are in or have been in the military, including her husband, who retired back in 2005 but is still a contractor at Shaw Air Force Base; her father, who is retired; and her brother, who is in the Air National Guard at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Columbia. “All of my family is military, which taught me to help others when you get a chance,” she said. “If you can’t donate your money, donate your time. It’s everyone’s business to do that.” Brown said she was excited when they called her to tell her she won. “Last year they gave away a shotgun to someone from Charleston, and this year someone from Sumter won, so they were happy about it,” she said. Brown is a member of Sumter Elk’s Lodge, which also does charity work. “We ring the bell for The Salvation Army at Christmas time (and do things with) whatever charities we could get involved with,” she said. “We can’t pass by the red kettle (without donating). Unwrap your heart, not your presents.”

Seth MacFarlane’s ‘The Orville’ takes off for Season 2 on Fox
WEEK OF DECEMBER 30, 2018 TO JANUARY 5, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: CAPRICORN, AQUARIUS AND PISCES
ARIES
You’ll use somewhat manipulative techniques to clear the air between family members. Your organizational skills will shine this week and you’ll be the family hero.
TAURUS
You’ll invite family and friends to celebrate the New Year with you. Two families that don’t usually get along will be brought together by your generosity and attention to detail.
GEMINI
You’ll want to feel useful this week, so you may host more than one gathering while also taking extra good care of your loved ones. Even when you’re a guest, you offer to help out by serving people and cleaning up.
CANCER
You’ll really enjoy the holiday festivities this year and you’ll find yourself performing in some way. People will take notice of you when you say or do something outlandish.
LEO
You’ll meet at least one person of a different ethnicity at a party this year. After learning about their culture, you’ll be inspired to incorporate their food and music into your daily life.
BY JAY BOBBIN “The Orville” is launching its second season a bit late, but Seth MacFarlane has been glad to use every minute of the extra time. As the Fox spaceship saga returns Sunday, Dec. 30 – following an NFL doubleheader on the last day of regular-season play – its star, creator and executive producer notes how all-consuming the series (normally to be seen Thursdays) is. “We spend an entire year working on this,” he reports. “You get anxious to get some feedback, because you’re really working in a vacuum up to that point.” Season 2 filming on “The Orville” began in February and ended in mid-October, and MacFarlane maintains that because of special effects and other complex logistics, some episodes wouldn’t make their air dates without starting so early. “It’s a streaming show that’s on a network,” he reflects. “We always joke on the set that it’s an impossible show to complete on a network schedule and budget, yet somehow, we do it. We’ll be in post-production right up to the wire, trying to get all the stuff done. “You’re just bound by the reality of time and the physical laws of the universe,” adds MacFarlane. “It takes the time that it takes. I look at medical dramas and legal dramas and family dramas, and those shows are on tight schedules as well. Add visual-effects work and set design and action sequences on top of that, and it’s a beast.”
VIRGO
While “The Orville” salutes “Star Trek” in many ways, even having “Trek” franchise veteran Brannon Braga as a fellow executive producer, MacFarlane is confident that the show’s followers have embraced the mix of humor (which his “Family Guy” history makes logical) and science fiction – along with tonal shifts between episodes. “I feel like the fans understood it a lot better than the critics did,” he says. “If we were tanking all across the board, that would be distressing, but I was really gratified and happy that the fans did grasp the show pretty early on.” As such co-stars as Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald and Scott Grimes also continue on “The Orville,” MacFarlane wants to keep integrating guest stars of a caliber to match last season’s ... who included Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson, who were in his 2014 movie “A Million Ways to Die in the West.” “I had such fun and such great personal experiences with both of them, I was thrilled that they agreed to come and do the show,” MacFarlane confirms. “They’re both busy people and very in demand, and it’s nice when you develop a friendship and on subsequent projects, they’re willing to come in and lend their star power. It’s great for the show.”
You’ll be the life of the party this week, and everyone you come into contact with will enjoy themselves. Just be careful on the road at night.
LIBRA
This time of year always incurs extra expenses. Even people you don’t know will appreciate your generosity with those in need. Giving is as much for you as it for those you give to.
SCORPIO
You’ll feel the need to move, dance and socialize this week and won’t want to miss a single event. You’ll help get parties started by suggesting fun games and activities.
SAGITTARIUS
Make sure you get enough rest during the week so you can stay up and party on the weekends. You’ll also need to catch up on sleep after being sick for a few days.
CAPRICORN
You’ll bring people together unexpectedly, which will lead to additional planning for you. You’ll go to great lengths to make your loved ones happy. Take care of yourself though, because a pesky flu might derail your plans.
AQUARIUS
You’ll be extra helpful while you’re a guest at other people’s homes. You’ll organize a party for your loved ones and with your encouragement, everyone will enjoy themselves.
PISCES
Convince your family to buy a group lottery ticket this week because luck will be on your side on New Year’s Day. Plans you’ve been making with family will solidify and a spontaneous group trip will make one of your dreams come true.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Jamie Foxx’s Top 10 Movies BY JAY BOBBIN “White House Down” (2013): Foxx and Channing Tatum have terrific camaraderie as the under-siege president and a Secret Service wannabe. “Law Abiding Citizen” (2009): Foxx plays it relatively straight-laced as a Philadelphia prosecutor locked in a battle of wits with a clever convict (Gerard Butler) who’s still orchestrating murders. “The Soloist” (2009): As a troubled man who’s also an expert musician, Foxx has many traits to master in this true story, and he does it superbly. “The Kingdom” (2007): Foxx’s takecharge performance in this espionage adventure stands out, since at another time in his career, he’d likely have gotten the amusing sidekick role instead. Here, he reaffirms his Hollywood status. “Dreamgirls” (2006): The women remain central in the screen version of the hit stage musical, but Foxx still shines as the manager who manipulates them both in and out of the spotlight. “Miami Vice” (2006): As iconic as Philip Michael Thomas was in his 1980s television portrayal of cool police detective Ricardo Tubbs, Foxx reworks the role and makes it his own. “Jarhead” (2005): Foxx plays it effectively rugged again as the sergeant in charge of untested Marines on duty in the Middle East. “Ray” (2004): Short of occupying the music legend’s body, Foxx becomes Ray Charles in the sterling performance that earned him an Oscar. “Ali” (2001): Foxx is solid as Drew “Bundini” Brown, Muhammad Ali’s right-hand man. “Any Given Sunday” (1999): Foxx made an impressive crossover to drama – and held his own against Al Pacino, no less – as a showy, overly ambitious pro football player.

A new ‘Robin Hood’ aims and misfires
As everyone from Errol Flynn to Kevin Costner has suggested, every generation needs its Robin Hood ... but maybe it should have skipped a generation. This one. The latest movie about He Who Robs From the Rich to Give to the Poor plays around with tradition, using such effects as slow-motion in action sequences, maybe to try to look cooler to younger audiences. Or, since Taron Egerton has the title role, maybe it’s just trying to capitalize on the same techniques used in his successful “Kingsman” adventures. Anyway, the basics stay the same as Robin returns home to enlist his somewhat Merry Men – including a decidedly not-merry Jamie Foxx as a variation on Little John – in opposing the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Ben Mendelsohn. If you want an authentic “Robin Hood,” it’s best to stick with an earlier edition, since no one seems really invested in his or her part here (and that also includes Eve Hewson as Marian). One of the main challenges in updating a classic tale is in making it speak effectively to modern audiences while not losing what made it special in the first place. Tipping even slightly to either end can throw off the balance entirely, and so it is with “Robin Hood.” To a certain extent (but only to a certain one), you can’t fault the picture for wanting to try a different approach, since there is such a long legacy already established. After the 1938 Warner Bros. staple “The Adventures of Robin Hood” came an animated Disney version, an elder-statesman Hood (in the persona of Sean Connery) in “Robin and Marian,” and even a comical Robin in the Mel Brooks spoof “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” And that’s just to name a few of the other takes. As today’s younger actors go, Egerton isn’t a bad choice to be a new Robin Hood. He may come across as a bit too young for the role, but that’s less a fault of his than a measure of the median age of past screen Robins, who generally have been on the older side (yet still able to handle the physical requirements of the part, a tribute to their respective trainers and/or stunt doubles). Leonardo DiCaprio is a producer of this latest version, and while his intentions probably were good, the result is something of a wellcostumed mess. It’s pretty bad when you have a “Robin Hood” that can’t see the Sherwood Forest for the trees. Taron Egerton Michael B. Jordan

“NIGHT SCHOOL”
Resuming his education many years after he dropped out proves quite revelatory for a man (Kevin Hart) who needs a GED result for a job he wants in this comedy. Tiffany Haddish plays the night-school teacher, whom he manages to infuriate with his antics almost instantly, but she eventually takes a special interest in him and helps him toward making the grade, literally. Director Malcolm D. Lee also includes Taran Killam (“Single Parents”), Rob Riggle, Romany Malco (“A Million Little Things”), Keith David and Anne Winters (“13 Reasons Why”) in his cast. DVD extras: audio commentary by Lee; “extended cut” version; deleted scenes; alternate opening. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • December 30, 2018 - January 5, 2019

CREED II PG-13, 2 hr 10 min Drama
Writer-director Drew Goddard’s moody melodrama draws a number of disparate characters together at a rundown motel on the border of California and Nevada in the late 1960s. Each has his or her own secrets to keep, but that becomes difficult in the face of bad weather and the arrival of someone else whose presence prompts some surprising revelations by the others. Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth, Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo (“The Color Purple”), Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Shea Whigham are among the stars. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BAD REPUTATION” The music-business journey of the influential and decidedly unconventional Joan Jett is traced in this documentary, a testament to how perseverance can pay off ... since she literally started her career out of her car trunk after facing rejection from numerous labels. The last laugh would be hers, since she became pivotal to two iconic bands (the Runaways and the Blackhearts) and released such enduring hits as “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and this film’s title tune – and she also has been an actress on occasion (“Light of Day”). Jett’s own comments here are supplemented by those from many of her friends and associates including Kristen Stewart (who played Jett in the movie “The Runaways”), Pete Townshend, Iggy Pop, Michael J. Fox and Miley Cyrus. ››› (R: AS, N, P) “FRONTLINE: THE PENSION GAMBLE” This recent episode of the PBS series examines the shortage of funds for pension payments promised to government employees, with correspondent Martin Smith looking into the causes for the shortfall. He concentrates on the situation in Kentucky, but the point is stressed that it’s not unique to that state, with the 2008 financial crisis having set the groundwork for the pension dilemma that exists currently. Questionable investments on Wall Street also have added to the problem over the ensuing years, with public employees such as teachers (some of whom comment here) also impacted. ››› (Not rated) “A-X-L” The title character in this adventure is a dog, but certainly not an ordinary one ... it’s a robotic canine that has been programmed as a potential weapon, but its destructive tendencies are altered by the new friendship it makes with a youth (Alex Neustaedter, “Colony”) who discovers it. Its creators then want it back, but that could become a big problem when the situation reactivates the robot’s original, dangerous instincts. Singer-actress Becky G, Thomas Jane, Ted McGinley and Lou Taylor Pucci also star. ››› (PG: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray) “SHINE” Salsa dancing is a big element of this drama about two brothers, one of whom has moved on while the other has maintained his own footsteps, quite literally. The sibling who has become a lawyer (Jorge Burgos) returns to his Spanish Harlem neighborhood in New York, which has been ravaged by a series of fires – and where he is pitted against his still-dancing brother (Gilbert Saldivar). David Zayas (“Dexter”) and Alysia Reiner (“Orange Is the New Black”) also are featured. ››› (R: AS, P)
