Lucy Liu stars in “Why Women Kill,” premiering Thursday on CBS All Access.
LEO
You’ll have a mountain of urgent work to get through. You’ll be generously compensated for your efforts financially and with a big promotion. Your new lover has something to propose.
VIRGO
CBS All Access series considers ‘Why Women Kill’ Infidelity. It’s “Why Women Kill” – at least as portrayed in the storylines of a darkly comedic drama that begins streaming this week on CBS All Access. The 10-episode hourlong series from Marc Cherry (“Desperate Housewives,” “Devious Maids”), which gets underway Thursday, Aug. 15, looks at infidelity through the lives and experiences of three women living in different decades, each of whom has had a spouse who has been unfaithful. There is Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin, “Once Upon a Time”), a 1960s housewife whose world revolves around white-collar husband Rob (Sam Jaeger, “Parenthood”); Simone (Lucy Liu, “Elementary”), a socialite in the 1980s whose extravagance masks inner doubt about her relationship with Karl (Jack Davenport, “Smash”); and Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste, “Barry”), a driven lawyer in 2019 whose open marriage to Eli (Reid Scott, “Veep”) tests their union. The series examines how through the decades the roles of women may have changed but their reactions to betrayal have not. Liu, fresh off filming her seventh and final season as Joan Watson in the CBS drama “Elementary,” signed on to the series for the chance to work with Cherry, an Emmy nominee for “Housewives,” and for the opportunity to play a character from the 1980s and all that that implies. “I think (it) is a fantastic time,” she says. “It’s a decade of color and makeup and shoulder pads, so I really loved the combination of all of that.
“She’s a socialite, she’s very effervescent,” Liu continues. “This is her third marriage. She is somebody who loves to keep up appearances and be the best at what she does and how she does it. She’s very competitive that way. “She’s fabulous,” she continues with a laugh. “To me, I don’t think she’s funny but I think she thinks she’s a very charming, delightful person and there’s another side of the coin that the world doesn’t get to see on her end. And ... she finds out her husband has not been faithful.” Though this is Simone’s third marriage, it’s the first time she’s had to deal with a partner’s straying and Liu says the character’s feelings of betrayal are overwhelming. “I think the first part of it is anger and disappointment,” Liu explains, “and then as things go on and continue on in their relationship, she starts to discover there’s a great deal of sadness as well. And so emotionally even though somebody has done that to you, it doesn’t mean that you necessarily hate them because you still care about them, and I think that sometimes is what makes it very difficult to split apart.” “I definitely think she blames him,” she continues, “because it was something that she did not expect. And when you’re together in a marriage, regardless of how materialistic Simone is, I don’t think she’s somebody who is unfaithful. I think that comes as a big surprise to her. That’s the painful discovery, really.”
Your sense of esthetics will reach new heights, and you’ll create one masterpiece after another in your daily life. Your patience will pay off in one way or another. Magic will ignite in one of your relationships.
LIBRA
You may spend part of the week at home. If you have young children, you’ll have lots to do, especially with the school year starting soon. If you’re single, be prepared for a surprising encounter.
SCORPIO
You’ll be on the move and you may be gone for longer than expected. Don’t refuse invitations from your friends; you need to blow off some steam and have fun. The sale of your home will be very profitable.
SAGITTARIUS
You’ll strive to find solutions to financial problems. Don’t hesitate to consult your friends or a professional to get the facts straight. You’ll get the financing you need to start a project.
CAPRICORN
With so much going on, time is passing at lightning speed. You’ll profit from your creativity. Against all odds, a new project will soon be worth its weight in gold. Rest is necessary; try to release your pent-up energy.
AQUARIUS
Even when time is in demand, perseverance and determination will help you reach your goals. At work, you’ll have to love what you do to feel like you’re in the right place for the long haul.
PISCES
You’ll have a busy social life after organizing an event that brings people together. To your surprise, your extraordinary imagination will help you create a masterpiece.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Mira Sorvinos’ Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Mothers and Daughters” (2016): Much of Sorvino’s work has been more television-oriented lately, but her presence is a solid addition to this collection of vignettes about relationships between ... well, check the title again. “WiseGirls” (2002): Sorvino is very good as a waitress who finds herself linked to mobsters – not unlike the one her father Paul played in “Goodfellas”–through her place of employment, where one of her co-workers is portrayed by Mariah Carey. “Summer of Sam” (1999): Though other actors get more of a spotlight in the film, Sorvino has her moments as the wife of a friend (John Leguizamo) of a suspect (Adrien Brody) in New York’s mid-1970s Son of Sam killings in director Spike Lee’s melodrama. “At First Sight” (1999): Sorvino is quite affecting as the girlfriend of a blind man (Val Kilmer) who has an operation to restore his vision, then must make a total readjustment to his life. “The Replacement Killers” (1998): Trying something completely different for herself, Sorvino is in major action mode in director Antoine Fuqua’s saga of a renowned hitman (Chow Yun-Fat) who becomes a target himself when he refuses an assignment. “Mimic” (1997): Pretty solid as horror tales go, Guillermo del Toro’s chiller casts Sorvino as an entomologist whose genetic creation comes back to haunt her – and others – of really big and lethal insects. “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” (1997): Sorvino scored one of her most enduring films by teaming with Lisa Kudrow for this comedy, in which two longtime friends head back from L.A. to Tucson to tell others of the great life they’re supposedly leading. “Beautiful Girls” (1996): Sorvino is part of a very appealing ensemble cast in this comedy-drama about a high-school reunion (yes, another one) and how the friends have moved on ... or not. “Mighty Aphrodite” (1995): Sorvino’s career was cemented early with her Oscar win for this Woody Allen comedy, casting her as the somewhat surprising biological mother of a couple’s adopted son. “Quiz Show” (1994): Sorvino has only a few scenes as the wife of federal attorney Richard Goodwin (Rob Morrow) in this Robert Redford-directed drama, but the re-creation of the “Twenty-One” game-show scandal is thoroughly compelling.

‘Stuber’ takes the action-buddy genre for another ride In these days of ride-sharing popularity, you just knew it had to happen ... a movie centered around an Uber trip. Marry that to an action-buddy premise, and it seems like an idea made in summer box-office heaven. Thus we get “Stuber,” or what happens when a mild-mannered driver gets drawn into a tough cop’s pursuit of a killer. The ever-rugged Dave Bautista is the police detective in this case, and since he’s just had eye surgery, he can’t get behind the wheel himself. He orders an Uber, and comedy star Kumail Nanjiani plays the chauffeur who draws the assignment. And does he ever get more than he bargained for, as the journey racks up bullets along with miles. This is right out of the “Lethal Weapon” or “Ride Along” playbook, with dissimilar fellows becoming partners in wisecracks and danger –
and the blueprint is so standard, it really falls to the actors involved to make the result successful. Fortunately, Nanjiani and Bautista have an offbeat rapport that keeps their shared antics very watchable; they get solid support from such costars as Mira Sorvino, Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”) and Natalie Morales (“Abby’s”). Actually, Bautista is the one who fares best here. He’s wisely following a path taken by others including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, carefully building upon roles that largely have let his commanding physique do the talking. He made an imposing James Bond villain in “Spectre” and introduced humor into his screen presence in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies, and “Stuber” lets him take the next step into defining his acting niche even more. Nanjiani has it a bit easier, relying on the comedic image he already has established for himself. That can work well in a crime-tale milieu, as proven in the past by Eddie Murphy (in “Beverly Hills Cop”), Chris Rock (“Lethal Weapon 4”), Kevin Hart (“Ride Along”) and numerous others.
Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani
Moving at a fast pace that ultimately clocks in at just over 90 minutes, “Stuber” does fall prey to something that’s been a hurdle for a number of movies lately, trying to be several things at once ... so you get some strong doses of violence along with the humor here. That’s not unheard of in this genre, but just be aware that’s the sort of ride “Stuber” provides.
“AVENGERS: ENDGAME” What can you say here, since so much is spoiler-y in nature if you give any details? The movie does leave no stone unturned – and that includes the Infinity Stones from the previous “Avengers” chapter – as it wraps up the franchise that has united so many Marvel superheroes. This finale even includes the most recent addition: Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson. As the tale begins, those who survived “Avengers: Infinity War” are scattered, and without direction in some cases; that changes when AntMan, again played by Paul Rudd, hatches an idea that might let the group revive and recover some of their lost super-colleagues. Each character gets his or her curtain call (with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Don Cheadle among the many others on hand), and there’s certainly enough time to do that, since the picture runs just over three hours. As usual, the technical aspects are first-rate, and some great surprise cameos add to the overall entertainment value. If the series has to go out, any fan is likely to feel that it does so on a very high note. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

One of television’s most acclaimed dramas began to enter its home stretch with this year of the Showtime series, which will draw to a close with its forthcoming eighth season. The plot here continues what was set up in the sixth round, with Carrie (Claire Danes) determined to free the many intelligence officials – including Saul (Mandy Patinkin) – who were arrested by President Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) after the latter survived an attempt on her life. Morgan Spector, currently in the “Suits” spinoff “Pearson,” joined the cast here as an FBI agent who helps Carrie in her quest; Beau Bridges, Dylan Baker, sndrine Holt and Mackenzie Astin also are featured. Linus Roache, Jake Weber and Amy Hargreaves continue their roles as well. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) “NEW AMSTERDAM: SEASON ONE” Among the new series successes of the past television year was this NBC medical drama, casting “The Blacklist” alum Ryan Eggold as a hospital’s new medical director who immediately dismantles the facility’s hierarchical status quo – his aim being the maximum benefit for patients as he challenges today’s health-care system. Naturally, some resent his sudden renovations, while others see him as the savior for the sort of medical care they want to be able to administer. Co-stars include Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman and Tyler Labine, with Ron Rifkin (“Alias’) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (”Heroes“) among recurring guest stars. The show’s second season begins next month. ››› (Not rated: AS, P) “PETER, PAUL AND MARY AT NEWPORT 1963-65” The members of one of music’s all-time great trios are seen in their prime in this release, which collates their mid-1960s performances at Rhode Island’s legendary folk festival. The selections include many of their standards, such as “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Puff the Magic Dragon” – and they also cover classics including “Wasn’t That a Time,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’ ” and “Early in the Morning.” An interview that Peter Yarrow recorded at the festival in 1963 is offered as a bonus feature, and he and Paul Stookey currently are doing their songs again while on tour. (Mary Travers passed in 2009.) A CD version of the program also is newly available. ›››› (Not rated) “THE SPANISH PRINCESS”

In this successor to “The White Queen” and “The White Princess,” Catherine of Aragon is the princess of the title in the Starz drama series, as played by Charlotte Hope (“Game of Thrones”). The tale addresses issues of gender, race and class in the London of the 16th century, as Catherine schemes to get what she believes is rightfully hers after the death of her husband: the throne of England, which appears destined to go to the then-future King Henry VIII (Ruain O’Connor). The cast also includes Dame Harriet Walter – seen recently in the PBS “Great Performances” presentation of “Julius Caesar” – Stephanie Levi-John, Nadia Parkes, Laura Carmichael (“Downton Abbey”) and Aaron Cobham. Slated to continue next year, the saga is based on the novels “The King’s Curse” and “The Constant Princess” by Philippa Gregory. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “I LOVE LUCY: COLORIZED COLLECTION” How red was Lucy Ricardo’s hair supposed to be? That is no minor question, since in the process of colorizing certain classic episodes for CBS’ recurring specials or recent years, the technical staff had to be true to Lucille Ball’s actual coiffure of the time ... as well as to the overall look of the show as it existed in the 1950s. In this new release that culls 16 visually enhanced stories, the best of the “I Love Lucy” best are included. Among the tales: Lucy’s drunken misfire of a pitch for Vitameatavegamin in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial,” Lucy and Ethel’s (Vivian Vance) work stint at a candy factory in “Job Switching,” and Lucy’s ill-advised acceptance of William Holden (as himself) lighting her cigarette – and her fake nose – in “L.A. at Last!” Desi Arnaz and William Frawley also star, of course. ›››› (Not rated)
