You’ll see immediate results. CANCER You’ll feel quite proud of one of your family members. One of your children might take their first steps or achieve something remarkable at school. LEO While you won’t feel inclined to bare your soul, you could unburden yourself by talking to someone. You’ll succeed at casting off your anxiety and leading a more active social life.

The Monterey Five meet a formidable foe in Season 2 of ‘Big Little Lies’ Lies fester and relationships are tested in the wake of Perry Wright’s death as HBO’s addictive drama “Big Little Lies” returns for Season 2 with one very notable new cast member in tow. Kicking off Sunday, June 9, the new batch of seven episodes finds the Monterey Five – Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) and Renata (Laura Dern) – bonding together to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives after the “accident” that claimed the life of Celeste’s abusive husband (Alexander Skarsgard) at the school fundraiser in the Season 1 finale. As the well-heeled ladies struggle with their consciences and worry about their secret being revealed, Perry’s formidable mother Mary Louise (played by three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep) arrives seeking the truth about her son’s demise, thus ratcheting up the tension and paranoia tenfold.

The David E. Kelley-created series scored a major coup when it landed Streep, who makes her first appearance as a series regular since HBO’s “Angels in America” in 2003. The actress admits she became sucked into the show’s storyline just like everyone else. “I loved this show. I was addicted to it,” Streep told a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif. “I thought it was an amazing exercise in what we know and what we don’t know about people; about family, about friends, how it flirted with the mystery of things. What was unsaid, unshown, unknown was sort of the pull, the gravitational pull of the piece. And it was so exciting. So, when I got the chance to join the crew, I thought, Yeah! I wanted to do it, to be in that world. The world that was created was amazing.” Originally conceived as a one-seasonand-done project, the series got extended life thanks to viewer demand and the fact that the cast had become close friends and wanted to continue

working together. And while there are no plans for a Season 3, Kidman – who is also an executive producer with Witherspoon – says the communication and collaborative effort on “Big Little Lies” make it one of her most satisfying work experiences to date. “I think we’re all in it together and we deeply care,” she says. “Nobody is in it for the wrong reasons. ... We want it to be a satisfying, fantastic experience for everyone. And with that comes enormous responsibility. But I think for us ... the way in which we work together, we’re just so honest with each other. ... “I just love having fellow partners and women who go, ‘This is ...’ and they’re so smart, so everyone’s contributing. And being able to be a part of that group, I’ve never had that. And it’s lovely at this stage of my life and career to be doing something that I’ve never done before.”

VIRGO Look over your bills one by one. You might come across a big error. The discovery could save you a lot of money or provide an opportunity to negotiate for better services. LIBRA Even if you’re full of ideas and initiatives at work, you won’t succeed at impressing everyone. You’ll need to make the decisions you’re faced with in order to make progress. SCORPIO You might need a second coffee before you can concentrate well enough to accomplish everything you set out to do. Expect to experience a bit of confusion. SAGITTARIUS Worries will nag at you all week. This is a good reason to disconnect, take a break and visit a massage therapist or spa with your friends. CAPRICORN You’ll be in charge of a wellattended event at work. This big success will allow you to show yourself at your best. As a result, you’ll be able to obtain the salary you’ve been hoping for. AQUARIUS It’s finally vacation time. You’ll have fewer responsibilities and feel less stressed. You’ll take a load off your shoulders and make the most of the present moment. PISCES You’ll spend more time and money than anticipated financing a pet project of yours. You and your partner may need to clarify how things stand between the two of you and how you envision your future as a couple.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Anne Hathaway’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Ocean’s 8” (2018): A knowingly humorous Hathaway is terrific as an actress who becomes the pawn of an all-female robbery gang targeting the necklace she wears to the Met Gala. “Les Miserables” (2012): Hathaway was a shoo-in for the Oscar she ultimately won for singing her way through the role of the tragic Fantine in the screen version of the stage hit.

“The Dark Knight Rises” (2012): It’s not easy to redefine a role as iconic as Catwoman, but Hathaway did it by playing smart – and smartly feline – for director Christopher Nolan.

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson do ‘The Hustle’

If the premise of “The Hustle” seems familiar, it should. The movie has been done twice before, first in the 1960s as “Bedtime Story” with Marlon Brando and David Niven, then as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” with Michael Caine and Steve Martin. The big twist in the latest version is that the competing con artists are women – played by Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Those actresses are so dissimilar, you’d have to figure the movie gets a lot of mileage out of their differences. It does, and both stars do what they

“Love and Other Drugs” (2010): By not playing her full hand too early, Hathaway left room for big and moving surprises in her character.

“Rachel Getting Married” (2008): Hathaway took her career to a new level by playing the thorn in her family’s side at her sister’s wedding. “Get Smart” (2008): If Barbara Feldon was to get an ideal successor as Agent 99, it’s Hathaway.

“The Devil Wears Prada” (2006): Hathaway hit the bull’s-eye as a recent college grad who proves a big challenge to an imperious fashion magazine editor (a typically great Meryl Streep).

“Brokeback Mountain” (2005): Hathaway shattered many preconceptions with her decidedly adult role as the woman – literally THE woman – in the life of Jake Gyllenhaal’s cowboy character.

“Ella Enchanted” (2004): Between her gigs as a princess, Hathaway put fun spins on fairy tales as the literally spellbound heroine of this fantasy.

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen

do best ... Hathaway playing it sly and refined, and Wilson putting her brash, no-holds-barred image right out there for all to see. However, the overall plot has gotten a little creaky over the 50-plus years since it was invented, and there’s only so much the ladies can do under those circumstances. They target the developer of an app (Alex Sharp) as the intended victim of their swindle, and that’s about as modern as “The Hustle” gets. Which is not to say there isn’t fun in watching the women try to outdo each other amid the splendors of Southern France while also letting the opposite gender feel superior – mistakenly so, since Hathaway and Wilson know exactly how to work their marks. The best moments of “The Hustle” don’t even involve men ... at least the ones in front of the cameras. (Comedian turned filmmaker Chris Addison directed the picture.) In the traditions of such recent female-centric teamings as Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in “The Heat,” Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara in “Hot Pursuit” and the whole cast of “Ocean’s 8” (of which Hathaway was a member), Hathaway and Wilson clearly were cast for what they bring as individual performers as well as for the potential of what they could do together. That’s very evident in a sequence that shows the refined Hathaway trying to educate the rougharound-the-edges Wilson in the finer points of the con game. You just know Wilson will stomp all over the tips Hathaway gives, but that anticipation doesn’t make watching the result any less amusing. And whether their characters are opposed to each other or working together here, the two talents appear to embrace their mission completely. “The Hustle” is old-fashioned by design, and even if it ultimately can’t overcome that mustiness, Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson deserve credit for still giving it all they’ve got.

“CAPTAIN MARVEL” It’s possible that the phrase “female empowerment” never has been more literal than in the case of this chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which had a lot of expectations attached to it. There is much to enjoy, starting with the time-period throwback to the mid-1990s and Brie Larson’s work in the title role whose alias is Carol Danvers, a military pilot destined for even greater things since her background gives her superpowers to go along with her courage and determination. An alien species known as the Skrull doesn’t mean anything good – for our heroine nor for the world at large if she doesn’t triumph. Sizable attention also is given here to Samuel L. Jackson as a younger version of his ongoing role as Marvel staple Nick Fury; for whatever else the special-effects masters achieve here, it is no small feat to shave nearly 25 years off that actor and character and have the result be completely believable. The presence of Jude Law and Annette Bening also lends cred to the movie, the result being an entertaining package that sets new boundaries while still delivering familiar-feeling fun. ››› (PG-13: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

This melodrama might seem like “Independence Day” meets “Red Dawn” meets any number of other alien-invasion or enemy-occupation movies – and it is that to a large degree, but thanks to clever writing and directing and smart casting, it also plays effectively into the general paranoia of our times. Its focus is on an area of Chicago that has been occupied by extraterrestrials, and while many residents accept their apparent fate to be under alien rule, bands of freedom fighters arise to challenge the oppressors ... and to prompt law enforcers to try to contain them, so as to limit the potential mayhem. There are literal monsters here, but director and co-writer Rupert Wyatt wisely keeps the emphasis on the human element, and what certain individuals do what they feel they must. John Goodman, Vera Farmiga and Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) have prominent roles. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“FIVE FEET APART” “Jane the Virgin” veteran Justin Baldoni is a filmmaker as well as an actor, with much of his behindthe-camera work trained on stories involving health concerns – so he was a rather logical choice to direct this drama about two cystic fibrosis patients, played by Haley Lu Richardson (“Split”) and Cole Sprouse (alias Jughead on television’s “Riverdale”), who must maintain a physical distance from each other while starting a romance. Their deepening relationship impacts certain decisions facing them about their futures, both respective and shared. Parminder Nagra (“ER”) and Claire Forlani (“Meet Joe Black”) also are in the cast of the naturally emotional tale. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: SEASON SIX” In the next-to-last round of the Netflix women’s-prison saga that helped change the game in terms of streaming shows, the story gets a rest as the inmates are sent to another facility in the immediate aftermath of a crisis at Litchfield Penitentiary. Alliances they had in the past may not withstand their new maximum-security surroundings, with their problems compounded by charges levied against them for the riot at Litchfield. Taylor Schilling, Kate Mulgrew, Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba continue their roles, with Mackenzie Phillips, Lori Petty, comedian Lea DeLaria and Alex Trebek – we’re not kidding, Alex Trebek – among guest stars. ›››››› DVD extras: “makingof” documentary; audio commentary by cast and crew members; outtakes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“I AM THE NIGHT” The mystery behind the existence of a young woman (played by India Eisley) also becomes a puzzle – and the possible road to redemption – for a reporter (Chris Pine) in this fact-inspired TNT drama series, directed in part by Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”). They team up on an investigation that leads to a gynecologist (Jefferson Mays) who has dark secrets, some of which may be connected to the notoroius Black Dahlia murder case. Leland Orser, Dylan Smith and Connie Nielsen are are in the cast of the saga, which makes use of a number of legendary Los Angeles locations. DVD extra: “Myths From Inside the Sowden House” documentary. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“GHOSTBUSTERS” If you’re a fan of this long-popular comedy-with-chills, you know “who ya gonna call” ... and you’re also likely to embrace a new 35th-anniversary edition that encompasses a Blu-ray version plus the film’s debut in the Ultra HD 4K format. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis (also the movie’s co-writer) and Ernie Hudson play the self-styled seekers of spectres in modern New York, where a musician (Sigourney Weaver) needs their help. Rick Moranis and Annie Potts also appear in the Ivan Reitman-directed laughfest that boasts a hugely popular theme song by Ray Parker Jr. Also in the new set is a 30th-anniversary disc of “Ghostbusters II,” in both Ultra HD 4K and Blu-ray as well, and a bounty of bonus features. ››› (PG: AS, P, V)
