Fans weigh in with testimony, as do Hollywood figures via archival footage; they include Steven Spielberg, iconic film critic Roger Ebert and Lucas himself.

WEEK OF JUNE 2 TO 8, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: VIRGO, LIBRA AND SCORPIO

ARIES

If you moved recently, you’ll need to redecorate to give the place a personal touch. Also, someone in your family might announce a pregnancy. Taking a professional course over the summer could be advantageous.

TAURUS

People will confide their innermost secrets to you because you’re a trustworthy and discreet person. Some revelations will be quite unusual and might leave you perplexed.

GEMINI

It will take you longer than you expect to get around. You might have to chauffeur your friends on several occasions. Try to get a hold of a map, a GPS or at least some good driving directions.

CANCER

If you need to make an important acquisition, mull over the transaction for at least a day. This will ensure you get the best price.

LEO

It’s important that you get some rest. At work, you’ll need a second cup of coffee to get your brain going and recover your productivity. You’ll be particularly creative and your intuition will be right on point.

VIRGO

A grifter grifts other grifters in EPIX’s ‘Perpetual Grace, LTD’ James is a man at rock bottom. As played by Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld,” “Date Night”) in the EPIX noir drama “Perpetual Grace, LTD,” a 10-episode series premiering Sunday, June 2, he’s an addict and lost soul found unconscious by the side of a dusty, rural road by Pastor Byron Brown (Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, “Gandhi”) and his wife Lillian (Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver, “Silver Linings Playbook”). The couple take him in, clean him up and try to give him some direction in life. But the trouble is, none of these people are what they appear to be. Ma and Pa, as they’re known, are a pair of con artists who use their church to bilk hundreds of innocent parishioners out of their life savings, and James, also a grifter, is on the hunt for his next score. And in this seemingly benevolent older couple, he thinks he’s found his latest mark.

Simpson, just off of critically acclaimed work in HBO’s “Westworld,” sought to do more work in that darker vein and found such a character in James, who he calls a “stripped-down human being” and a product of many “well-intentioned bad choices.” “He’s this naked baby,” the actor explains, “and you get to watch what happens next. You know, how does a grown man with the qualities of a naked baby get through life? How does he start over with nothing in the middle of a plan that he couldn’t control if he was on the top of his game? It’s that thing that life does where it tests you beyond what you think is possible and you feel like you’re dying, and then the next day happens and you’re just twice as strong as you were and you’re ready for twice as much. To me that’s inspirational.” Created by Steve Conrad and Bruce Terris, the driving forces behind Amazon’s “Patriot,” the series also stars

Luis Guzman (“9/11”), Kurtwood Smith (“That ‘70s Show”), Terry O’Quinn (“Lost”), Chris Conrad (“Patriot”) and Hana Mae Lee (the “Pitch Perfect” movies). It was shot on location last fall and winter in Santa Fe, N.M., which Simpson credits with creating a look reminiscent of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. “You have these landscapes, you have the tumbleweed vibration ...,” he says. “You’re so high the sun is at your level, the clouds are sending shadows you’ve just never seen before. I’ve been all over the world; I’ve never seen it (like that) because the shadows it throws off of a bush makes it look like a buffalo because it’s so long. And the contrast, it’s kind of magical. ... It’s a DP’s (director of photography) dream, it truly is.”

Your plans could change at the last minute. For example, your friends might cancel an event you organized. Fortunately, this will give you time to relax and you’ll enjoy the peace and quiet.

LIBRA

You’ll organize an event such as a housewarming, anniversary or birthday party that will bring a lot of people together. It will end up being a total success. You’ll be popular socially, professionally or in some other manner.

SCORPIO

You’ll stumble upon important details relevant to a course or professional training program. Should you attend it, spectacular developments lie ahead of you. You feel the need to broaden your horizons.

SAGITTARIUS

If you have young kids, you’ll start to worry about how to occupy them over the summer. You might want to put aside some time to choose a summer camp.

CAPRICORN

At work, you’ll achieve a certain amount of success by taking the time to negotiate, ask questions and finalize agreements. Once you’ve re-established order, the people living under your roof will start to get along better.

AQUARIUS Whatever project you’re working on, it’s essential that you take the time to attend to every detail and complete the preparatory steps. By proceeding in this way, you’ll mark a great achievement and be widely emulated. PISCES You’ll set yourself apart and win admiration in some way. It might be with a new summer look that makes people take notice like never before.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Charlize Theron’s Top 10 BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “Tully” (2018): While Theron does very fine work as an overwhelmed mother of three, she’s matched by Mackenzie Davis in the title role of a nanny enlisted to help her. “Atomic Blonde” (2017): A furiously physical and effective Theron plays a British spy you definitely don’t want to run into on a staircase if you’re her enemy. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015): As an ideally gritty post-apocalyptic warrior, Theron makes a perfect match for title star Tom Hardy ... and sometimes outmatches him. “A Million Ways to Die in the West” (2014): Theron is much more

Rogen and Theron take a ‘Long Shot’ One of the most fun kinds of movies there can be is the type that puts together two stars who appear to be utterly dissimilar – but by the nature of the story, you know their characters will have to find common ground. “Long Shot” is that sort of picture, and once you know its stars are Oscar winner Charlize Theron and noted screen prankster Seth Rogen, it’s easy to tell that this certainly is that odd-couple kind of tale. She’s the U.S. Secretary of State, and someone who has presidential aspirations, and he’s an investigative reporter who throws protocol

successful than this Western satire is overall, as she plays a gunslinger’s estranged wife who befriends a farmer (director and cowriter Seth MacFarlane). “Prometheus” (2012): Though the special effects nearly upstage her, Theron remains prominent in director Ridley Scott’s decidedly “Alien”-esque sci-fi thriller.

“Snow White and the Huntsman” (2012): Theron gets her Evil Queen on, and quite effectively, in this revision of the fairy tale that also stars Kristen Stewart as the fairest of them all. “Young Adult” (2011): Theron is great fun as a divorced novelist who returns home, intent on reclaiming her now-married ex-boyfriend. “North Country” (2005): Theron does strong work as a miner whose complaints about on-the-job harassment led to a historic lawsuit. “Monster” (2003): The role that has defined Theron’s career thus far is one that, ironically, she loses herself in completely: Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer Theron played to an Oscar win. “The Cider House Rules” (1999): As an older woman who teaches the John Irving story’s young hero a lot, Theron offers a textured performance.

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen

and politeness to the wind in the trademark Seth Rogen way. She also happens to have been his babysitter a couple of decades ago ... and when she needs a new political speechwriter to make her sound more down-to-earth, guess who she hires? If you stop and question the overall credibility of “Long Shot,” it’s like sticking a pin in a balloon – and it will deflate just that fast. It’s better to just sit back and enjoy the fantasy that you know it will offer, though Theron offers hints that she really could be quite commanding as a figure in the political world. However, a lot of this is wish fulfillment, particularly in the case of Rogen and his alter ego. This isn’t to say that the romance in the story couldn’t ever happen, but let’s face it, it’s ... yes, a long shot. And those who made the movie know it, thus creating the potential for the slightly elevated frat-boy humor Rogen is so famous (and successful) for. That also gives Theron the opportunity to do what she does best, which looks even better with such a juxtaposition of styles. Classy, fashionable and reserved, she’s pretty much everything he’s not; therein lies the humor as they initially collide, then begin to develop a considerably warmer relationship. Lisa Kudrow, “True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgard, “Fresh Off the Boat’s” Randall Park and “Better Call Saul’s” Bob Odenkirk add enjoyment in the supporting cast, but “Long Shot” never really deviates from its two central stars. Nor should it: As a real-life couple, they might seem to be a long shot indeed, but they do supply a fair share of entertainment as one of the most unlikely screen duos of recent times.

“A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL” Tyler Perry certainly has made his mark with his alter ego Madea, who apparently reaches “her” finale with this 11th chapter in the comedy-movie franchise. However, the funeral of the title is not Madea’s, but that of a relative who met his fate while in very close throes with his wife’s best friend. The resulting events reveal that other relatives haven’t been faithful to their significant others, either. As usual, writer, director and star Perry also fills other roles amid the hit-or-miss humor – and don’t place any bets on this truly being the end of Madea, since the picture had a big opening, often a cause to resurrect a character down the line. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • June 2- 8, 2019

Movie Schedule

“GLORIA BELL” Week of June 2

ALADDIN (2019) PG, 2 hr 8 min Action/Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Director and co-writer Sebastian Lelio reconfigures his earlier film “Gloria” into a vehicle for Julianne Moore, who expectedly gives her all to the title role of a divorcee clearly in love with the nightlife while spending her days at a drab office job. She literally dances her way through various Los Angeles clubs, eventually finding a new love interest (John Turturro) and debating whether there’s a place in her self-styled life for a fresh romance. The impressive cast also includes Michael Cera, Brad Garrett, Holland Taylor, Sean Astin, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Rita Wilson ... but appropriately, the story’s focus never is off Moore. ››› (R: AS, N, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“A STAR IS BORN ENCORE”

BRIGHTBURN R, 1 hr 31 min Horror, Suspense/Thriller

THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR PG-13, Drama

POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU PG, 1 hr 44 min Action/Adventure, Comedy

THE HUSTLE (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 34 min Comedy

THE INTRUDER (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 42 min Drama, Horror, Suspense/Thriller

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019) PG-13, 3 hr 1 min Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/FantasyComedy

Relatively few movies prove popular enough to justify an expanded version being released to theaters soon after its original run, but the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga update of the price-of-fame story told several times earlier is one such film. This cut of the picture – an Oscar winner for its Gagaco-written hit song “Shallow” – adds 12 minutes, largely musical ones, to the Cooper-directed telling of the romance between sliding star Jackson and rising talent Ally. The excellent supporting cast includes Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle. The Blu-ray Combo Pack includes an “Encore” disc in that format, along with a DVD of the original theatrical version. ››› (R: AS, N, P)

“LOST IN SPACE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” The television sci-fi classic originated by producer Irwin Allen got a movie reboot, but this Netflix series version updates the odyssey of the galaxy-traveling Robinson family more fully. Toby Stephens (“Black Sails”) and Molly Parker (“Deadwood”) play the heads of the clan, who escape from a crisis aboard a bigger vessel via a Jupiter spacecraft with their children (Maxwell Jenkins, Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall), mechanic Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) and a gender-switched surrogate for the scheming Dr. Smith (Parker Posey). And yes, there’s still a robot to warn young Will Robinson (Jenkins) of imminent danger. Though there’s lasting fondness for the 1960s show, this variation reaffirms how vastly far special effects have come since. Netflix has ordered a forthcoming Season 2. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Bluray)

“JACK RYAN: SEASON ONE” At a time when he also was getting raves for his direction of “A Quiet Place,” John Krasinski succeeded Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine by reinventing novelist Clancy’s CIA-analyst character for this well-made Amazon adventure series – which has been renewed for second and third seasons. In the same way that “Casino Royale” rebooted James Bond, the plot goes back to Ryan’s roots as he links some unusual bank activity to possible terrorist plans, eventually taking him into the field and also into considerable danger along with his initially skeptical boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce, in the part previously played by James Earl Jones). The early stages of the romance between Ryan and his future wife, doctor Cathy (portrayed here by Abbie Cornish), also get attention as the saga unfolds in settings including London and Morocco. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“THE BRADY BUNCH: 50TH ANNIVERSARY TV & MOVIE COLLECTION” Yes, it’s been – and we’re really sorry to do this to the show’s initial fans – a half-century since the enduringly popular sitcom about a widow and a widower who blended their families first hit the airwaves. You can get all the “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” you want, along with huge doses of Greg and Cindy and all the others, from this set that encompasses the initial five-season series, the animated “The Brady Kids,” the sequel shows “The Brady Brides” and “The Bradys,” several TV movies that were done with most if not all of the original cast, and the two feature films in which Shelley Long and Gary Cole inherited the Carol and Mike roles originated by Florence Henderson and Robert Reed. We will make the leap to suggest that you’ll have “a sunshine day” by immersing yourself in this. (We couldn’t help ourselves.) ››› (TV elements, not rated; feature films, PG-13: AS)
