WEEK OF MAY 12 TO 18, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: SAGITTARIUS, CAPRICORN AND AQUARIUS

ARIES Making adjustments to who you include in your circle of friends would be wise. Some of them are parasites who only drain you. Try to put aside at least one day for relaxation and therapeutic treatment.

TAURUS Self-esteem is often a precursor of success. Tell yourself you can do it and you’ll manage to accomplish a brilliant feat. Afterwards, you’ll be very proud of yourself.

GEMINI You’ll devote a lot of time and energy to your family and home. You’ll also be inspired to adopt a new perspective that will allow you to live in the moment.

CANCER

A soldier endeavors to prove himself unfit for duty in Hulu’s

‘Catch-22’

A talented cast and the fresh perspective of George Clooney and Grant Heslov give new life to a classic Joseph Heller novel in a military dramedy that begins streaming this week on Hulu. In “Catch-22,” a sixepisode series premiering Friday, May 17, Christopher Abbott (“It Comes at Night,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”) stars in the iconic role of Yossarian, a World War II bombardier who requests to be removed from active duty by reason of insanity. The trouble is, the act of doing so is evidence of a sane mind, at least in the U.S. Army’s eyes, and thus disqualifies him from the designation. Ergo, the titular phrase, which describes a paradoxical situation from which one cannot escape

because of contradictory rules. The large cast also includes Clooney (who is also an executive producer with Heslov and others), Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”), Hugh Laurie (“House”), Giancarlo Giannini (“Quantum of Solace”), Pico Alexander (“The Portuguese Kid”), Rafi Gavron (“A Star Is Born”) and Graham Patrick Martin (“Major Crimes”). In Yossarian, Abbott takes on a character that not only looms large in the literary world but was also brought to life with great skill by Alan Arkin in Mike Nichols’ acclaimed 1970 theatrical movie, a performance that the young actor says he didn’t allow to color his. “I tried to find things that were very relatable to

me ... and kind of go from there,” he explains. “And a lot of the kind of existential questions that Yossarian has I can often share that with him. You know, he’s someone who thinks about the big picture and he’s someone that asks ‘Why?’ a lot. And yet he’s surrounded by his friends and these other guys who don’t seem that they’re asking ‘Why?’ They’re just kind of going head-on.” That perspective becomes apparent in the opening episode, in which Yossarian explains why he volunteered for the extremely dangerous job of bombardier, reasoning that by the time he completed the lengthy training and was ready for active duty, the war would be over – which, to his horror, turns out not to be true.

Don’t worry about being at a loss for words, but be careful not to make indiscreet or inappropriate remarks. You might get in a confrontation with someone who doesn’t speak English well.

LEO You’ll gather the money you need to undertake an important project. Your speeches will cause people to flock to you.

VIRGO You’ll feel enticed to go on an adventure abroad. If you take the plunge, don’t forget to attend to your passport in time for your summer holiday.

LIBRA

“In a way there’s a naivete there,” Abbott says, “that he’s thrown into a situation that quickly switches that around and goes from naivete to kind of insanity almost by the end. It’s a very fast arc of a journey.” “In a way, he’s a person that is afraid to die because of his lust for life,” he continues. “And it’s not that he’s afraid to die as a whole as more how he’s going to die, and he doesn’t want it at the hands of this bureaucratic system and he doesn’t want it at the hands of an inane mission. You have to remember, too, that in this situation in ‘Catch-22’ that the war is almost over but yet they’re still flying these missions and it kind of seems that no one knows what for, for what purpose and to what end.”

Tiredness is increasingly becoming an issue for you. Your body is telling you to slow down — don’t ignore it. In addition, make sure to get a full night’s sleep. Do these things and you should recover your energy.

SCORPIO If you’re single, you’re going to experience love at first sight. Although you’ll start putting more energy into your social life, you’ll quickly realize you also need some alone time.

SAGITTAIRIUS At work, you’ll be saddled with new responsibilities. Even if you find them taxing at times, they’ll open up paths for advancement and the possibility of a promotion.

CAPRICORN You’ll start organizing a summer vacation with family and friends. Fantastic experiences await you and you have every intention of making the most of them.

AQUARIUS You might choose to break off a romantic or professional relationship without warning. You’ll feel impulsive and your thinking will be somewhat confused.

PISCES It isn’t always easy to co-ordinate people or groups with opposing interests. You’ll manage to find the right words and get everyone on the same page.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Hugh Jackman’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “The Front Runner” (2018): As Senator Gary Hart, whose presidential bid was sidetracked by much-reported personal drama, Jackman does a fine job for director Jason Reitman.

“The Greatest Showman” (2017): Jackman scored one of the biggest successes of his film career – and a major-hit soundtrack, too – with this musical biography of circus impresario P.T. Barnum. “Eddie the Eagle” (2016): Jackman does enjoyable character-actor work as the rough-around-the-edges coach of an unlikely Winter Olympics ski jumper in this true story. “Prisoners” (2013): An atypically edgy Jackman succeeds as a father willing to do anything – and proving it – to find his kidnapped child. “Les Miserables” (2012): Jackman earned an Oscar nomination by putting the force of his singing voice behind Jean Valjean in the Victor Hugo-inspired musical. “Real Steel” (2011): A computergenerated, boxing robot could steal a movie from anyone, but it’s to the credit of Jackman’s heartfelt performance as a struggling promoter that it doesn’t. “Australia” (2008): Good-looking as it is, this drama doesn’t achieve the epic sweep it aims for, but Jackman ably fulfills his mission to play a hunky ranch hand. “Happy Feet” (2006): A heard-butnot-seen Jackman has – and is – fun as an animated penguin named Memphis. “The Prestige” (2006): Jackman and Christian Bale compete as magicians in director and co-writer Christopher Nolan’s intelligent melodrama. “X-Men” (2000): Jackman zoomed into international stardom with his initial performance as Wolverine in this Marvel Comics adaptation.

The movies find a ‘Missing Link’ Back to the category of animated movies we go ... and it hasn’t been long since our last visit there, given the relatively recent release of “Wonder Park.” As with superhero tales, though, there’s a danger in so many of them crowding the market in a concentrated period of time. That understandably leads audiences to expect more of each one, and stepping up to bat in the cartoon category is “Missing Link,” which is bemusing without being genuinely magical – a combination that may satisfy older viewers but leave younger ones wanting. The title character of “Missing Link” is a Sasquatch literally named Link, and voiced by Zach Galifianakis. He’s pursued in the Pacific Northwest by an explorer who has the recognizable and wellplaced voice of Hugh Jackman, and once the two meet up, they set off on a revised quest together toward the place where the bigfoot ultimately wants to settle. That’s a bit more sophisticated than might be expected from this sort of tale, reflecting a certain maturity on the filmmakers’ part ... but also cutting down on the kind of antics that might keep kids in “Missing Link” their seats. There is humor, to be sure, but more than a bit of it is of the type that may sail straight over the heads of those whose tickets qualified for children’s prices. The animation in “Missing Link” is at once lovely and abstract, as might be expected from the same studio that issued “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” (the latter of which was written and co-directed by Chris Butler, who also directed this picture and wrote it as well). And the voice cast is intriguing, as often is the case with such efforts these days. Zoe Saldana, Timothy Olyphant and Stephen Fry also are heard. “Missing Link” is a unique-enough entry on the animated front, but as technically fine as it is, connecting fully on an emotional level is the link it’s really missing. (A worthwhile addendum, for those interested in such matters: The picture marks the re-entry of United Artists into the movie business as an active brand. It will be much more a releasing company than a production entity in its new iteration, but it’s good to see that imprint return. It will be back on the James Bond series next year when Daniel Craig’s fifth and last chapter in the franchise debuts.)

Jamie Lee Curtis

“COLD PURSUIT” “Taken” redefined Liam Neeson’s screen image as that of a human vengeance machine, and in this variation on the theme, he uses another machine – a snowplow – to get the job done. His character makes a living driving that vehicle, but he finds other uses for it after his son dies, with a drug kingpin (Tom Bateman) responsible for the tragedy. The grieving father then goes after the criminal and his minions, bent on eliminating them one by one – and trust us, that plow does a lot more than just move snow in this case. Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland adapted an earlier film of his own for this version. Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”) plays a detective, with Laura Dern, William Forsythe and Benjamin Hollingsworth (“Code Black”) also in the cast. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. The original “Happy Death Day” thriller – in which a sorority member relived the day she met her fate over and over – returned a huge profit on a relatively small budget, so this sequel was inevitable. Jessica Rothe returns as the sassy heroine as a manufactured time loop catches others in a day-repeating phenomenon similar to the one she experienced earlier, with people (including her) apparently dying, yet coming back to life when the same day starts over again. She works against the continually ticking clock to try to restore things to normal ... or, in the case of this tale, relative normal. Director Christopher Landon, a son of actor Michael Landon, also is back from the first film; co-stars include Suraj Sharma (“God Friended Me”) and Steve Zissis (“Togetherness”). ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “APOLLO 11” Even if you think you know all there is to know about the American space mission that first put men on the moon, the stunning footage included in director Todd Douglas Miller’s documentary – appropriately timed for the historic event’s 50th anniversary – is bound to make it seem fresh to you all over again. Recently discovered 65mm film footage provides a breathtaking view of the flight ... not only from the perspectives of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins, but also from those of the NASA engineers and technicians involved, and the many spectators who watched around the world as the lunar landing unfolded. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; “makingof” documentary. ›››› (G) (Also on Blu-ray) “FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY” Dwayne Johnson is a producer and (playing himself) a star of this fact-inspired comedy-drama featuring Florence Pugh (“The Little Drummer Girl”) as Paige, the British WWE wrestler who initially pursues her career in the ring in tandem with her brother (Jack Lowden, of “Mary Queen of Scots”). He doesn’t make the cut, though, so she has to proceed into rigorous training largely on her own ... though she develops doubts about continuing. Expectedly, a lot of the film gets very physical, with writer-director Stephen Merchant (“The Office”) giving the result much of its somewhat bemused tone. Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), Nick Frost and Vince Vaughn also appear. DVD extras: two “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Merchant; deleted and extended scenes; outtakes. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BACKDRAFT 2” It’s “only” taken about three decades, but there’s now a sequel to the well-regarded drama saga of Chicago firefighters. Director Ron Howard isn’t involved again in this direct-to-video drama, but star William Baldwin is, with his Brian McCaffrey blamed by his nephew (Joe Anderson) for the death of the latter’s father. The plot gets more complicated as bad guys with their minds on missile theft set fires to cover their tracks and distract those who might catch them. Donald Sutherland also reprises his original role as an arsonist whose expertise may or may not be helpful in resolving the situation. The new film also is available with the first “Backdraft” in a two-film pack. ›› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Bluray) “THE DONNA REED SHOW: SEASONS 1-5” Still shown often on nostalgia-themed networks, this pleasant sitcom of the late 1950s and early 1960s became popular (and sometimes satirized) for its highly idealized portrait of American family life. Reed – who was an Oscar winner, for “From Here to Eternity,” by the time she did the series – plays the happily domesticated Donna Stone, who makes a comfortable home for her pediatric-doctor husband (Carl Betz) and their children (Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen, who both scored musical hits off the show with their respective tunes “Johnny Angel” and “She Can’t Find Her Keys”). Reed also was a producer of the program, though her then-husband Tony Owen had that nominal on-screen credit. ››› (Not rated)

A bouncing good time at the Great Inflatable Race The YMCA of Sumter hosted the Great Inflatable Race during the weekend as a way to promote exercise and fitness as a community and family. Participants, many of whom dressed up in tutus or family team outfits or even a dinosaur costume, ran through the bounce-house obstacle course that required them to climb, slide and jump their way through a 5K.
