What’s New NOW On May 31 “Good Omens” An Earth-dwelling angel (Michael Sheen, “Masters of Sex”) and a demon (David Tennant, “Doctor Who”) team up to save the world and stop Armageddon, as they go in search of a missing 11-year-old boy, who is unaware he is the Antichrist in this action-comedy series from Neil Gaiman (“American Gods”) and the late Terry Pratchett. Jon Hamm, Benedict Cumberbatch and Adria Arjona are also in the talented cast. (ORIGINAL) Series Premiere “A Brilliant Young Mind” Morgan Matthews (“The Fallen”) directed this solid 2014 British drama about an autistic teen math prodigy (Asa Butterfield, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”) who finds new confidence when he lands on the English team at the International Mathematics Olympiad. Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins, Eddie Marsan and Jo Yang also star. “The Big Wedding” The movie may not be Oscar-worthy, but there are Academy Award winners to spare in this would-be comedy that’s a thematic spin on “The Birdcage.” Robin Williams starred in that film, and he also turns up in this tale of a divorced couple (Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton) pretending to still be married for the sake of their soon-to-wed adopted son (Ben Barnes). Susan Sarandon is another Oscar owner in the cast. Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried appear as well. “Emperor” Tommy Lee Jones’ performance as Gen. Douglas MacArthur — complete with the requisite pipe and sunglasses — is this drama’s true spark, but much of the focus is on one of the military legend’s aides (Matthew Fox, “Lost”), who is tasked with determining whether Japan’s Emperor Hirohito (Takataro Kataoka) should be tried and executed for war crimes. A suddenly resurfaced relationship from the past makes the mission more difficult for the decision maker.

Building Wealth for Over a Century

“Brittany Runs a Marathon” (August) A New York twentysomething (Jillian Bell, “Workaholics”) ditches her unhealthy lifestyle and takes up running, leading to other positive changes in this 2019 comedy movie that won the Audience Award at Sundance this year. “The Power” (date TBA) Without warning, all teenage girls develop the ability to electrocute people at will in this provocative drama series written and created by award-winning British author Naomi Alderman (“Disobedience”). (ORIGINAL) “Dark Tower” (date TBA) Jasper Paakkonen and Sam Strike will star in the pilot for a drama series based on the Stephen King book series of the same name, that tells the story of a gunslinger and his first encounter with the Man in Black. (ORIGINAL) “Bandish Bandits” (date TBA) This romantic musical series from India follows the love story of two musicians of differing abilities and interests and from starkly contrasting backgrounds. WEEK OF MAY 26 TO JUNE 1, 2019 THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: GEMINI, CANCER AND LEO

ARIES

You’ll have an action packed week and put ideas that inspire you into practice. Our greatest achievements grow out of our dreams.

TAURUS

Someone close to you might need your assistance. You’ll feel weighed down by health issues or growing fatigue. Take the time to recharge and recover.

GEMINI

You’ll enlarge your social circle and professional network. You’ll take the reins planning a largescale event that turns out to be a huge success.

CANCER

You’ll feel overburdened with professional and familial responsibilities. If you have young children, you’ll actively involve yourself in their year-end scholastic activities.

LEO

The time has come to plan your next holiday. Indulge yourself with a trip worthy of royalty. There will be many small tasks to take care of in preparation of an event that will be well attended.

VIRGO

Oscar nominee Sam Elliott joins PBS’ Memorial Day tribute A 30-year run speaks to the National Memorial Day Concert’s value in helping America honor members of its Armed Forces, past and present. Originated by the late Jerry Colbert and now executive-produced by his son Michael, the PBS program marks its threedecade milestone Sunday, May 26 (check local listings). Joe Mantegna (“Criminal Minds”) and former “The West Wing” and “The Kids Are Alright” co-star Mary McCormack will host on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day and saluting Vietnam War veterans while introducing guest actors and musicians. Among those featured: recent Oscar nominee Sam

Elliott (“A Star Is Born”) and fellow actors Dennis Haysbert (“24,” “The Unit”) and Jaina Lee Ortiz (“Station 19”); singers Patti LaBelle, Alison Krauss and Justin Moore; and singer-actors Amber Riley (“Glee”) and Christopher Jackson (“Bull,” “Hamilton”). General Colin L. Powell (Ret.) is scheduled to make his traditional appearance, and Jack Everly will return to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra. Also streaming live on the PBS Web site (www.pbs.org), Facebook and YouTube, this year’s National Memorial Day Concert signifies Mantegna’s 18th appearance overall in the event. “It doesn’t seem that long, but I guess the time just goes by,” he reflects. “I initially brought Dennis Haysbert into it a few

years ago, and he and I are going to do a piece about two Vietnam buddies. “Denis Leary also is somebody I brought in, and Bonnie Hunt ... and Gary Sinise,” adds Mantegna. “Charlie Durning did that for me, basically bringing me in, and that was a thing I took on. It’s very gratifying for me because so often, the people who do it want to come back.” Guest performer Elliott has visited Washington before, once for a White House screening of the movie “We Were Soldiers” (in which he co-starred), and another time for an occasion that affected him deeply. On the July 4th after 9/11, he attended a celebration at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and ended up giving an unplanned speech in which

he expressed feeling guilty over having not served in Vietnam. (He had fulfilled his military obligation by serving at home in the Air National Guard.) Elliott recalls a moment after the speech, standing and talking with a group of veterans next to the wall, when one of them in a wheelchair “looked me right in the eye and said, ‘Two things, Sam: 1.) Don’t ever regret any service you’ve done for your country. And 2.) If I had had an opportunity to join the f...in’ Guard, I would have.’ That spoke volumes to me, and it helped me make peace with something that had dogged me for a long time.”

Are you feeling frantic and emotional? Big disruptions such as a move are on the horizon. You’ll need to make profound changes in order to give yourself a stronger foundation.

LIBRA

Your love life will occupy much of your attention during the week. The main goal will be to work with your partner to plan your future together. If you’re single, you’ll become more proactive in seeking out your soul mate.

SCORPIO

You’ll pay special attention to your health. You might start a new diet that will prove to be quite effective. The results will show quickly and many people will imitate you in order to have the same success.

SAGITTARIUS

You’ll stand out in a big way within a group. You’ll be fairly proud of this and feel emboldened. This will bolster your reputation as a leader among your peers and possibly within the company you work for.

CAPRICORN

You’ll decide to buy or sell a new property on a whim. You’ll find a place that suits your family’s needs perfectly — even if it’s a last-minute decision.

AQUARIUS

You’ll have lots to talk about. You’ll give a speech and be warmly applauded. Also, you’ll reach out to people who can help you resolve a financial matter.

PISCES

You’ll have a lot of shopping to do this week. Don’t worry too much about getting the best price or about negotiating the best repayment conditions for a loan; you’ll save money on the interest payments.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,

Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Scarlett Johansson’s Top 10 Movies Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ wrap things up BY JAY BOBBIN

BY JAY BOBBIN

with their ‘Endgame’

“Lucy” (2014): Johansson is great fun to watch as a meek woman completely transformed into a relentless vengeance-seeker by a revolutionary drug.

“Her” (2013): A heard-but-not-seen Johansson makes her mark as a computer system’s voice. “The Avengers” (2012): Johansson displays physical prowess as well as acting skill as she returns as Black Widow, who teams with other superheroes to save Earth. “We Bought a Zoo” (2011): Johansson is charming as the keeper of said zoo in this drama.

“Iron Man 2” (2010): In her first appearance as Marvel Comics’ Black Widow, the role she reprised in later “Avengers” movies, Johansson makes a fine cohort for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008): Penelope Cruz won an Oscar, but Johansson and Rebecca Hall also are delights in Woody Allen’s comedy.

“Match Point” (2005): In her first collaboration with Woody Allen, Johansson is edgy as a privileged Englishman’s (Matthew Goode) girlfriend who takes up with his envious pal (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). “In Good Company” (2004): Johansson is welcome as an adman’s (Dennis Quaid) daughter who gets involved with his much younger new boss (Topher Grace), much to Dad’s dismay.

“Lost in Translation” (2003): The role that made Johansson a bona fide star casts her as an unhappy wife who makes a surprising – and surprisingly deep – connection in Tokyo with a famous, irony-prone actor (Bill Murray). “The Horse Whisperer” (1998): In her first sizable “Hollywood” role, Johansson plays an accident victim counseled by Robert Redford.

What can you say about “Avengers: Endgame”? Really ... what can you say, since so much of it is spoiler-y in nature if you dare to give any details? Here’s what can be said: The movie leaves no stone unturned – and that includes the Infinity Stones from the previous “Avengers” chapter – as it wraps up the franchise that has united so many Marvel superheroes. The finale even includes the most recent addition to that screen canon: Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson. As “Endgame” begins, those who survived “Avengers: Infinity War” are scattered, and Scarlett Johansson

without direction in some cases. That changes when Ant-Man, again played by Paul Rudd, hatches an idea that might let the group recover some of their presumably lost supercolleagues. The writers and directors here are veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they know to give each character his or her curtain call. There’s certainly enough time to do that, since “Avengers: Endgame” runs just over three hours. Also with that luxury, the filmmakers can delve into aspects of familiar characters that are surprising and often amusing. There’s certainly a good dose of that at the tale’s outset as Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk are shown among those who have taken different paths in the wake of the preceding “Avengers” film’s events. In line with those, the actors get to have some fun with their now-familiar alter egos, which probably was one of the biggest lures to them in returning for this last stanza. The size of the paychecks they received probably didn’t hurt, either ... but Marvel and its movie parent company Disney had to know they could afford whatever the price was. The opening figures for “Avengers: Endgame” surely confirmed that. The picture broke boxoffice records at every turn, and that even applied well before it opened: It also broke some of the Web sites on which eager fans started buying tickets the nanosecond they became available. Was all the hype and advance excitement worth it in the end? As usual, the technical aspects of “Avengers: Endgame” are first-rate, and some great surprise cameos add to the overall entertainment value. To be sure, the movie is quite entertaining – and if the series has to end, any fan is likely to feel that it does so on a very high note.

Chloe Grace Moretz

“GRETA” Neil Jordan directed and co-wrote this melodrama that offers a good match of actresses. The title role belongs to Isabelle Huppert, playing a New York-based piano teacher sought out by a waitress (Chloe Grace Moretz) who found the woman’s handbag on a subway train. Returning it develops into something complicated – and, eventually, downright scary – as the two women grow closer and the good Samaritan discovers that the reason for their meeting might have been pre-planned. Stephen Rea, who has worked for Jordan a number of times (very notably in “The Crying Game”), also is in the cast along with Maika Monroe and Colm Feore. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) 12 • The Sumter Scene • May 26 - June 1, 2019

Movie Schedule

“OUTLANDER: SEASON FOUR” Week of May 26

A DOG’S JOURNEY PG, 1 hr 48 min Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Family

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM R, 2 hr 11 min Action/Adventure, Suspense/Thriller

THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR PG-13, Drama

With the fifth season now being filmed in Scotland and a sixth already ordered, the most recent complete round of the popular Starz series based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels – and more specifically in this case, “Drums of Autumn” – encompasses brutality of several sorts as Jamie and Claire (Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe) survive a shipwreck to make a new existence for themselves just before the American Revolution. The saga’s time-shifting continues by switching back and forth to the experiences of the couple’s daughter in the 20th century Brianna, or “Bree” (Sophie Skelton), who seeks information on her parents and their experiences. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“SOUTH PARK: THE COMPLETE TWENTY-SECOND SEASON” Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s animated, ever-irreverent Comedy Central series rolls on, with Kenny, Stan, Kyle, Cartman and company. This season of the show certainly doesn’t shy away from hot-button topics, with religion-related sexual-abuse cases, the legalized use of marijuana and online retailer Amazon’s quest to establish new headquarters among the themes of certain episodes. However, there’s also room for a traditional Halloween satire, and former Vice President Al Gore figures into a two-part story dealing with – expectedly enough –climate change. DVD extras: audio commentary by Parker and Stone; deleted scenes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU PG, 1 hr 44 min Action/Adventure, Comedy

POMS PG-13, 1 hr 31 min Comedy

THE HUSTLE (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 34 min Comedy

“A VIGILANTE” The person seeking self-styled justice is a woman in the case of writer-director Sarah Daggar-Nickson’s drama, with Olivia Wilde (“Life Itself”) starring as someone who knows what it’s like to be mistreated, courtesy of an abusive husband (Morgan Spector) whom she manages to get away from. Not unlike Jennifer Garner’s character in the recent “Peppermint,” she then goes off the radar to learn skills in both self-defense and offense, and resurfaces to assist others in trouble by using her highly physical new talents. Kyle Catlett also is featured, but Wilde clearly remains the story’s centerpiece. DVD extra: “making-of” documentary. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“WHEN A STRANGER CALLS BACK”

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)

The original “When a Stranger Calls” was a highly effective thriller, and this 1993 sequel – originally presented on Showtime, and now debuting on Blu-ray – retains enough of the tension and fright to be worthwhile. Carol Kane reprises her role as the babysitter who was tormented the first time, now trying to help another minder of children (Jill Schoelen) who fears a similar stalker has returned to cause her more grief. Charles Durning also returns from the first film as a now-retired detective who attempts to come to the rescue as he did before. Director and writer Fred Walton came back as well for this follow-up. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V)

PG-13, 3 hr 1 min Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy

“THE RED RIDER”

THE INTRUDER (2019) PG-13, 1 hr 42 min Drama, Horror, Suspense/Thriller

BREAKTHROUGH (2019) PG, 1 hr 56 min Drama

ALADDIN (2019) PG, 2 hr 8 min Action/Adventure

Here’s a blast from the distant past, a 15-chapter 1934 Western serial with a then-popular star of the genre, previous real-life cowboy Buck Jones. The saga actually is an expansion of an earlier Jones movie, “The Range Feud,” that featured someone else who would become well-known for an association with horses and six-shooters ... John Wayne. Here, Jones plays a lawman who lets a murderaccused friend (Grant Withers, who later appeared in a number of Wayne’s pictures) get away, then tries to help prove the man’s innocence. Also notable in the cast is Jim Thorpe, the amazingly wellrounded Native American athlete who made his mark in a number of sports and was immortalized by the film “Jim Thorpe – All-American.” ››› (Not rated: V)

BRIGHTBURN R, 1 hr 30 min Horror, Suspense/Thriller

“GLORIA BELL” (June 4) “JACK RYAN: SEASON ONE” (June 4) “A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL” (June 4)

ROCKETMAN

“I AM THE NIGHT” (June 11)

R, 2 hr 1 min Drama, Music/Performing Arts

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS PG-13, 2 hr 12 min Action/Adventure
