A failing couple resort to pub therapy in SundanceTV’s ‘State of the Union’ Fans of the YouTube style of short-form programming will want to check out an innovative dramedy series premiering this week on SundanceTV and Sundance Now. In “State of the Union,” debuting Monday, May 6, Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids,” “Get Shorty”) and Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl,” “An Education”) star as Tom and Louise, an attractive and apparently successful London couple trying to repair their failing marriage through weekly marital therapy sessions. But before each visit, they first meet in the pub across the street to have a few and inevitably discuss their issues, which we come to learn are many.
Tom is a music journalist who lost his job with the downfall of his magazine and thus feels somewhat inadequate next to Louise, a successful doctor whose career is on the rise. As a result, he feels she’s grown bored with him, which she picks up on. Infidelity soon follows. As they’re bending elbows and talking through problems, another couple is seen in every 10-minute episode exiting their therapist’s office, much to Tom and Louise’s fascination. They try to imagine what their story is. “They are like the worst version of us,” O’Dowd explains. “So the couple that go before we go in, we’ve been kind of eavesdropping
or peeking on the relationship through the pub window over the course of the last five or six weeks, and they have big blowout fights. And we’re trying to imagine what’s happening in their relationship, like it’s our own personal soap opera. And we find solace In the fact that their relationship seems to be worse than ours and it’s the only solace that we’ve been able to draw so we’re holding onto it.” The entire 10 episodes were filmed over two weeks last summer in an actual pub in West London, which made for 10 hour days for O’Dowd and Pike, who stayed after shooting was done to run over their lines for the next day over a glass of wine. With a cast of two, both
actors were painfully aware that there was little margin for error. “It was intense,” O’Dowd says, “because it was quite a lot to shoot in that (twoweek) period. And as (a test) of memory, kind of knowing 12 pages off every day is quite a lot so it was quite the test. But I think we pretty much got it.” Toward that end, O’Dowd was glad to be paired with Pike, whom he considers a true pro. “As being kind of such a specific actor and hardworking and interesting, she’s so solid,” he says. “Like she’s got that kind of theater background thing. She just doesn’t seem to f... up.”
You’ll manage to enlarge your clientele and social circle. You’ll be in charge of an event that will connect many people and prove extremely rewarding. This could be in a professional context or among friends.
VIRGO
You’ll finally get to work on an important task that effects both your work and family life. You’ll have no trouble finding the amount you need to buy a property.
LIBRA
You’ll find yourself making big plans for your next vacation. Perhaps you’ll also take advantage of the free time you have this summer to complete a course. If so, it could help advance your career.
SCORPIO
You’ll need to think long and hard about what you want and don’t want, weighing the pros and cons. This will allow you to be more decisive.
SAGITTARIUS
At work, you might find yourself in a position where you need to intercede to resolve a conflict. Your presence of mind and your personality will allow you to find nuanced and practical solutions.
CAPRICORN
At your job, you’ll be inundated with work and a number of small things that need your attention. Before shifting into summer mode, you’ll get into a groove at work and take pride in getting things done quickly.
AQUARIUS
Allergy season is here, and you might already be feeling the effects. Eating healthy will allow you to mitigate your symptoms as well as any other discomfort you’re feeling, such as stressrelated heartburn.
PISCES
Someone in your family could announce a major move or a pregnancy. If your kids have been living on their own for a while, you’ll seriously consider selling your house.

Report: Trump lawyers’ letter er to Mueller challenges subpoenaa BY JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's lawyers composed a secret 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller to assert that he cannot be forced to testify while arguing that he could not have committed obstruction because he has absolute authority over all federal investigations. The existence of the letter, which was first reported and posted by The New York Times on Saturday, was a bold assertion of presidential power and another front on which Trump's lawyers have argued that the president can't be subpoenaed in the special counsel's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The letter is dated January

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com Four National Bank of South Carolina branch locations in Sumter and one each in Manning and Bishopville will soon get a facelift as the bank transitions its signage and other legal branding to its parent company’s name. Since January, Synovus has implemented a staggered brand transition across five states of all of its non-Synovus bank divisions, company spokesman Lee Underwood said Friday. With 38 branches in South Carolina, NBSC will complete that brand transition of signage, business cards, pens and other legal branding this month. The signage transition in Sumter County is scheduled for the middle of the month,
Underwood said. NBSC was actually founded in Sumter in 1905. Synovus acquired NBSC in 1995. Currently, NBSC has 340 employees. Having one brand name will help with marketing and customer recognition across the Southeast, according to Underwood. NBSC Sumter Market President Melissa White said she was proud of the reputation that NBSC has built in conjunction with Synovus and is looking forward to the future. “Adopting the Synovus name while maintaining our local, relationship-centered delivery model will increase awareness of our regional presence, our financial capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers and prospects,” White said.

Stephen King’s Top 10BYMovies JAY BOBBIN “It” (2017): Filmed previously as a television miniseries, this chiller about longtime friends tormented by a clown named Pennywise reconfirmed how enduringly effective King”s storytelling is. “The Green Mile” (1999): A prison was novelist King’s setting, with Tom Hanks as a guard and Michael Clarke Duncan as a most unusual convict. “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994): A favorite King story for many, this drama – also set in a prison – presents superb work by Morgan Freeman as a veteran convict and Tim Robbins as a newcomer. “Misery” (1990): Director Rob Reiner tackled King’s writing, and led Kathy Bates to an Oscar, in the tale of a novelist (James Caan) held captive by an obsessive fan. “Stand by Me” (1986): The fact that not all King stories have to do with horror is reaffirmed by this excellent drama of boyhood friends, also directed by Reiner. “The Dead Zone” (1983): Later the source of a cable series, King’s tale of a coma victim who awakens with psychic abilities boasted excellent work by Christopher Walken in that central role, as well as by others. “Christine” (1983): A car with a mind of its own was the “villain” in director John Carpenter’s effective take on a King story. “Creepshow” (1982): “Macabre fun” is the best way to describe King’s teaming with another staple of the horror genre, director George A. Romero (“Night of the Living Dead”). “The Shining” (1980): Director Stanley Kubrick made good use of King ... and gave Jack Nicholson his iconic “He-e-ere’s Johnny!” moment as an isolated, ultimately possessed inn caretaker. “Carrie” (1976): The first adaptation of a King novel for the screen remains one of the best, with Sissy Spacek excellent as the telekinetic teen who doesn’t take being tricked at the school prom very well.

Stephen King’s ‘Pet Sematary’ reopens in movie remake For quite a span of time, Stephen King was one of the most reliable, frequently used names in movies as well as literature. Numerous books by the horror icon have been adapted for film, sometimes more than once. See: “Carrie,” “The Shining,” “The Dead Zone” and “It.” And now, King devotees also can see “Pet Sematary” anew, thanks to the current update. After the blockbuster that “It” became in movie form relatively recently, it’s not surprising that filmmakers and studios would go back to the King canon to see what else of his remains adaptable, even if it’s been adapted before. The 1989 “Pet Sematary” surely has its fans, but the chilling effectiveness of the update proves the tale was ripe for a remake. Of course, the author’s beloved Maine is the setting as a Boston doctor (played by Jason Clarke) moves his family there. Their new home promises tranquility, but with King’s imprint attached, you just know that is not to be. The most obvious sign of that: the backyard that long has been used as a makeshift cemetery for family pets by area residents, particularly younger ones who have some bizarre burial rites. The newcomers have brought along their own pet, a beloved cat, which automatically stacks the deck ... and makes a certain plot turn entirely foreseeable. It also puts a welcome spotlight on the ever-great John Lithgow, portraying a neighbor whose knowledge of the territory and its secrets ultimately leads to considerable terror for all concerned. The magic of Stephen King always has been that it thrusts the extraordinary upon ordinary people. That built-in relatability has been a huge part of King’s success in any and every medium, and it’s just as potent as ever in the second screen take on “Pet Sematary.” Amy Seimetz fares well as Clarke’s wife, as do the youngsters who play their children. While it’s great to see that the King catalog can be mined again nicely, the other side of that coin is the hope that additional remakes of his tales won’t be made just for the sake of trying to cash in. That’s a very real possibility, since Hollywood never has been known to resist any chance to profit – so if other revisits of King’s work do come, here’s hoping they’re approached with the thought and care that “Pet Sematary” and “It” have been. For now, it’s enough to roll with the frights “Pet Sematary” puts forth, and to marvel at the fact that they manage to be both fresh and familiar.

“THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART” The animated “Lego Movie” was expectedly successful enough to yield some spinoffs – one centered around a Lego version of Batman – but this is the official sequel. Original writers Chris Miller and Phil Lord are back as the gaming rivalry between two real-world siblings sets up the premise, with Chris Pratt returning to the voice cast as construction guy Emmett – and also as a new hero named Rex Dangervest, whose skills come in very handy when the regular Lego gang faces off against a planet overseen by a queen voiced by Tiffany Haddish. Batman (with the voice of Will Arnett) comes into play again here, as do the Lego takes on other legendary heroes; other returnees lending their voices to the familiar-feeling fun include such other returnees as Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Will Ferrell. DVD extras: four “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by filmmakers; deleted scenes; outtakes; music video. ››› (PG: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

The theme of the Mel Gibson-starring 2000 comedy “What Women Want” is revisited – from the opposite-gender point of view – in this remake of sorts, casting “Empire’s” Taraji P. Henson as a sports agent who has both professional and personal concerns as she debates why her male counterparts get ahead faster. Her consultation with a psychic (Erykah Badu) results in her being able to hear what men are thinking, an ability she uses in trying to land a highly promising basketball player (Shane Paul McGhie) as a client. Tracy Morgan, Aldis Hodge, Wendi McLendon-Covey (“The Goldbergs”), Max Greenfield (“The Neighborhood”) and Richard Roundtree are among other co-stars in a cast that also features pro basketball legends Shaquille O’Neal, Lisa Leslie and Grant Hill as themselves. ››› (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “BETTER CALL SAUL: SEASON FOUR” In the most recent round of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel series, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) is on probation and trying to cope with a personal loss – one he had a rather direct hand in. As he tries to get his entitlement to practice law reinstated, he reunites with fellow attorney Kim (Rhea Seehorn), who initially helps him in his pursuit ... then learns some things that cause her to doubt her involvement. Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian and Giancarlo Esposito also continue in the cast, and David Costabile (“Billions”) makes a return in his “Breaking Bad” role. A fifth season of the show has been ordered. DVD extras: “making-of” documentary; audio commentary by cast and crew members; outtakes; “security training videos.” ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) “THE PRODIGY” Many parents are used to their children exhibiting unusual behavior, but the cause could be supernatural in this chiller. “Orange Is the New Black’s” Taylor Schilling plays a mom who fears what she may find out about her son (Jackson Robert Scott) as she probes what might be causing his strange, frequently dangerous actions. The suspicion that the youngster has been possessed by the spirit of a serial killer ultimately takes the mother’s concern from speculative worry to frightening reality. Peter Mooney (“Burden of Truth”) and Colm Feore also are in director Nicholas McCarthy’s cast. DVD extras: “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by McCarthy; photo gallery. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “FORREST GUMP” The second movie to win Tom Hanks an Oscar for best actor (in consecutive years), director Robert Zemeckis’ drama – which the Academy Awards also named its year’s best picture – gets 25th-anniversary treatment in a new home-video package that includes a Blu-ray as well as the film’s first 4K Ultra HD release. “Life is like a box of chocolates,” indeed, as the innocent and well-meaning title character finds himself caught up in many of the pivotal events of 20th-century American history ... including the Kennedy presidency and the Vietnam War. Gary Sinise also is memorable as Lt. Dan, after whom the actor named the music band he performs with frequently; Robin Wright, Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field also have pivotal roles in the highly moving saga. ›››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) “WHEN CALLS THE HEART: QUEEN OF HEARTS” As it has turned out, this release culled from the Hallmark Channel drama series may be destined to be something of a collector’s item, since it reflects the end of cast member Lori Loughlin’s run on the show, filmed prior to the revelation of the headline-making college-admissions scandal. Here, her character Abigail has doubts about Lucas (Chris McNally), the newest member of the Hope Valley community ... as does Bill (Jack Wagner), who makes use of some then-modern technology to do a bit of probing. Abigail also considers taking up stock investing. Erin Krakow, Pascale Hutton, Paul Greene and Eva Bourne also star. ››› (Not rated)
