Back to Blackthorne: Clavell’s ‘Shogun’ makes a big TV resurgence BY DANA SIMPSON

For those who may not be able to travel internationally this year, perhaps a trip back in time would suit equally well. “Shogun,” the newest adaptation of James Clavell’s popular historical fiction novel of the same name, takes viewers back to 17th-century Japan by way of the magic of television. Don’t miss your chance to get in on the action when “Shogun” has its two-episode premiere Tuesday, Feb. 27, on FX and Hulu. As a bestselling novel, Clavell’s “Shogun” achieved high praise from critics as well as readers, while annual sales of the book averaged approximately one million copies for more than a decade and a half (from its 1975 publication to 1990). Now, nearly half a century after the novel’s publication, “Shogun” makes yet another resurgence; not dissimilar to its growth in popularity following NBC’s three-time Emmy-winning 1980 miniseries of the same name, starring Richard Chamberlain (“The Count of Monte Christo,” 1975) in the role of Pilot Major John Blackthorne. Taking on the role of Blackthorne in the FX series is British-American actor, musician and filmmaker

Cosmo Jarvis, largely known for his roles in period pieces such as “Persuasion” (2022), “Lady Macbeth” (2016) and “Peaky Blinders.” And while much of the plot does center on Blackthorne, the entirety of the largely-Japanese cast is instrumental in bringing the end of the Sengoku period to life more than 400 years after its decline. According to FX, this new adaptation of “Shogun,” like its predecessors, “is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war.” “When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help [Lord Yoshii] Toranaga [Hiroyuki Sanada, “47 Ronin,” 2003] tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants,” the official synopsis reads. “Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko [Anna Sawai, “Pachinko”], a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line.” FX also noted that the series, which will span 10

episodes from its double premiere to the finale, boasts an “acclaimed Japanese cast” that is “unprecedented for an American production.” Joining Jarvis, Sanada and Sawai among the cast are Tadanobu Asano (“Thor,” 2011) as Kashigi Yabushige, an untrustworthy ally of Toranaga’s; Hiroto Kanai (“Shomonai bokura no renai-ron”) as Kashigi Omi, head of the fishing village where Blackthorne’s ship washes up; Takehiro Hira (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) as Ishido Kazunari, Lord Toranaga’s main rival; Tokuma Nishioka (“Godzilla vs. King Ghidora,” 1991) as Toda Hiromatsu, Toranaga’s best general and closest friend; Yuki Kura (“Followers”) as Yoshii Nagakado, Toranaga’s stubborn and all-tooeager son; Shinnosuke Abe (“13 Assassins,” 2010) as Mariko’s jealous husband, Buntaro (a.k.a. Toda Hirokatsu); Moeka Hoshi (“On the Street,” 2019) as the widow Usami Fuji, “who must find new purpose amidst her lord’s fight” (per FX); and Fumi Nikaido (“Himizu,” 2011) as Ochiba no Kata, mother of the shogunate’s rightful heir and another of Toranaga’s rivals.

Portable units, piping materials big sellers at hardware stores BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Sumter may not have the rolling hills found in cities farther north, but one neighborhood road between Alice Drive Elementary School and Second Mill Pond was slanted enough for those barely broken-out speedsters to provide hours of entertainment the morning after a handful of inches of snow powdered, then iced, the area. Michael Douglas’s ‘Instinct’ was, and still is, good BY JAY BOBBIN More than 30 years later, “Basic Instinct” has kept its basics as a marvelously adult thriller. Director Paul Verhoeven and writer Joe Eszterhas stirred considerable discord — even with their leading lady — when the film (which MGM+ Hits presents Tuesday, Feb. 27) was released in 1992, but it remains a lushly filmed and well-performed melodrama that did nothing to diminish the box-office power Michael Douglas was enjoying at the time. He’d earned a best-actor Oscar for “Wall Street,” but he still was the go-to star to play men prone to give in to their emotional weaknesses. Here, that man is Nick Curran, a San Francisco homicide detective still recovering from a tragic incident that welded his job to his personal vices — thus earning him the nickname “Shooter.” His investigation of an ex-rock star’s vicious murder-via-ice-pick puts him and his partner Gus (the ever-likable George Dzundza) in the trajectory of the victim’s girlfriend: Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a behaviorally cool novelist who’s basing her newest book on Curran, to his evident dismay. Her attitude does little to dissuade the cops that they should consider her a suspect in the killing, affirmed by their police-station interrogation of her (in a famous scene that Stone reportedly was furious about, maintaining that Verhoeven filmed her in a prurient way

she didn’t expect). Even as Curran can’t make up his mind about her professed innocence, he’s drawn to her, a fact that doesn’t please Catherine’s live-in girlfriend (Leilani Sarelle, later known by her then-married last name Ferrer, and impressively tough and vulnerable at the same time here). While “Basic Instinct” doesn’t stint on violence, most assuredly in the film’s opening, it also has a visual elegance enhanced by a score by movie-music icon Jerry Goldsmith. That’s a particularly effective merger in scenes filmed on highways along the California coastline, and also in a cat-and-mouse car chase that sees Curran tail Catherine to the home of her mentor (veteran actress Dorothy Malone), who happens to be a notorious killer. The look and sound of the movie also mesh well in moments between Douglas and Jeanne Tripplehorn, who plays Curran’s psychologist and still-hooked-onhim former flame. The enormous success of “Basic Instinct” led to an unfortunately inevitable “Basic Instinct 2” 14 (!) years later, with Stone reprising her role in an inferior retread of the first movie’s plot. It was so little-seen, at least in America, that it hasn’t tarnished its forerunner’s reputation. Our instinct is to advise viewers to get engrossed in the original all over again.

The film will be shown Wednesday, Feb. 28, as part of a Turner Classic Movies “31 Days of Oscar” day devoted to Best Sound nominees and winners (this picture won that category). “Victor/Victoria” (1982): Reunited with Julie Andrews and directed by her husband, Blake Edwards, Garner plays a Chicago gangster who can’t believe Andrews’s character is the female impersonator she’s posing as. “Murphy’s Romance” (1985): Garner earned his only Oscar nomination as a pharmacist who develops a May-December romance with a divorced mom (Sally Field, who has called Garner the best kisser she ever worked with) new to his small town. “Promise” (1986): This Emmywinning drama boasts superb work by Garner as a man who has to assume custody of his troubled younger brother (James Woods). “8 Simple Rules” (2003-05): Producers wisely enlisted Garner to help carry this series forward as the father-in-law of the character played by John Ritter, who suddenly passed away during the show’s run. “The Notebook” (2004): One of Garner’s most popular projects came toward the end of his career, a relationship drama that spans several decades. And if you don’t have tissues for the ending, at least you’ve been forewarned.

The quirky, high-spirited lawyer portrayed by Carrie Preston — who won a Primetime Emmy for the role as a guest star in “The Good Wife,” then reprised it in the spinoff “The Good Fight” — now has a show of her own as the character. Premiering Thursday, Feb. 29, on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime, “Elsbeth” transfers Tascioni from Chicago to New York, where she has a secret agenda as she works with the city’s police department in a special investigative job. Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”) plays the stern police chief, Capt. C.W. Wagner, while Carra Patterson (“Straight Outta Compton,” 2015) is Kaya Blanke, the officer partnered with Elsbeth. “I could not be more thrilled,” the friendly Preston says of giving Elsbeth her own showcase now. “It’s been such a wonderful and interesting journey with this character. I started to play her 14 years ago, at the end of the first season of ‘The Good Wife,’ and you do these guest spots and don’t ever think they’re going to repeat. You hope you do it well and then you move on to your next job, but I knew there was something special about that character even back

then.

“I felt so lucky and privileged that they would entrust me with it, because she was so unique,” Preston continues. “She seemed to resonate with audiences, and then a [TV] season went by and I was like, ‘Well, OK. I guess that’s that.’ Then they brought me respond to her and her unconventional way of doing things. And as the seasons [of ‘The Good Wife’] went by, I would hear, ‘Why don’t you do a spinoff that centres around her?’ [Executive producers] Robert and Michelle King and I would touch base about that, but it wasn’t the right time.” Instead, “The Good Fight” happened as the first spinoff, with Christine Baranski’s (“Mamma Mia!,” 2008) Diane Lockhart character front and center. “They would bring me back periodically [on that drama],” Preston notes, “and I even got to direct on that. Then at the end of ‘The Good Fight,’ we started talking a little more in earnest [about what has become ‘Elsbeth’], and COVID-19 happened.” After the resulting delay, the Kings remain among the executive producers of “Elsbeth,” which starts each story by showing the perpetrator committing the given week’s crime. Elsbeth then matches wits with the felon — in the series premiere, a homicidal stage director played by guest star Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”) — with her homespun manner cloaking her keen method of interrogation. If that sounds like the approach of a certain other television series and character, that’s not a coincidence. Preston says that at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Kings “found that they were going back and watching reruns of ‘Columbo,’ and they just kept getting drawn to the structure of that show. Coincidentally, out of nowhere, a reporter wrote a piece about how she also was watching ‘Columbo’ … and at the end of it, she wrote, ‘We don’t need a reboot of “Columbo.” Just give Elsbeth Tascioni her own show.’ [The Kings] already had the idea of Elsbeth doing something like that, then they called me and said, ‘Let’s come up with a pitch.’”
