Missy Peregrym rejoins the ‘FBI’ ranks BY GEORGE DICKIE
Missy Peregrym’s extended break from “FBI” action is over. The actress began her second maternity leave from the series about a month before executive producer Dick Wolf’s CBS crime drama ended Season 4 last spring. She gave birth to her second child – daughter Mela – last June, and she’s now getting back to pursuing felons as federal agent Maggie Bell, who has recovered from exposure to sarin gas. Peregrym rejoins the show in the Tuesday, Nov. 15, episode. “I was super-scared to go back to work,” the friendly Peregrym admits, “after being immersed in a world of change for six months in every possible way ... emotionally, physically, mentally. Then you go back to work and you see your friends, and I just felt flooded with support. It’s been a much better transition than I anticipated.”
Maggie’s return involves her partner OA’s (Zeeko Zaki) guilt over not having been able to keep her from the harm that took her out of commission. “He’s pretty protective,” Peregrym confirms. “Maggie is leaning on him in the partnership, but he hasn’t sorted things out over what has happened. It’s almost more traumatic for him than it was for her, and how do you work together when you have that between you?” Peregrym commends Shantel VanSanten – who filled in as Special Agent Nina Chase and will remain a recurring “FBI” guest – for her work on the show: “She is a fantastic actress. I was so excited when she said ‘Yes,’ because I just knew it would add a richness. And it was a nice break for my brain. I just got to focus on being pregnant, growing a human, and getting it into the world. That was all-encompassing.”
With her son (with husband Tom Oakley) Otis now 2-1/2, “Rookie Blue” alum Peregrym reports he likes being a new big brother. “Everyone’s well and healthy,” she says of her family matters. “We’ve obviously had some huge adjustments; having both a toddler and a baby is no joke, but as an adult, I don’t think much is really a joke unless you make it one. Mela is taking in the world in such a beautiful way, and Otis adores her. It’s really lovely to see them together.” Peregrym also enjoys seeing Mela in the company of “FBI” colleagues on the show’s New York set. She notes Otis arrived “in the pandemic, so he really wasn’t around (the workplace) very often. We kind of kept him separated from everything. I’d have to go into my dressing room and see him there, whereas we have more freedom this time and people get to know Mela. It’s so nice for me to have her around more often.”

The governor’s order also limits local governments from issuing mask ordinances based on his prior emergency declarations related to the COVID19 pandemic. Those governments will have to find justification for such mask rules within their own ordinances.

Hugh Jackman’s Top 10 Movies

“The Greatest Showman” (2017): Jackman scored one of the biggest successes of his film career – and a major-hit soundtrack, too – with this musical biography of circus impresario P.T. Barnum. “Logan” (2017): Jackman does a terrific job of projecting his “X-Men” character’s future, when the thenformer Wolverine emerges from a sort of superhero retirement to help a young woman (Dafne Keen) with similar abilities. “Eddie the Eagle” (2016): Jackman does enjoyable character-actor work as the rough-around-the-edges coach of an unlikely Winter Olympics ski jumper in this true story. “Prisoners” (2013): An atypically edgy Jackman succeeds as a father willing to do anything – and proving it – to find his kidnapped child.

What do you do after you’ve been The Wolverine?
The question is answered to a large extent by “Logan,” the 2017 adventure that FX shows Thursday, Nov. 17, and Friday, Nov. 18. It takes Hugh Jackman’s character into his post-“X-Men” phase, when the last of the mutants have been shipped off to relative isolation. Their powers aren’t what they once were, with Logan’s selfhealing abilities failing him.
Maybe just as bad, he’s now marking his time hitting the bottle and driving a limo – traits that hardly boost the image of a Wolverine. He gets his mojo back, though, when a youngster with her own super-traits (Dafne Keen, impressively holding her own here) needs his help in getting to safety in Canada.
A science-minded enemy (Richard E. Grant) and his minions are after her, so Logan hits the road with her as well with as his X-Men mentor Charles Xavier, with co-star Patrick Stewart in a very welcome return.
After the relative sameness of some of the “X-Men” chapters, “Logan” is a refreshing twist, paradoxically infused with new energy as the franchise presumably headed into its twilight. This chapter transcends genres, and by placing

comic-book figures in a more traditional adventure scenario, it scores big. Director and co-writer James Mangold also guided Jackman in the film titled “The Wolverine,” and he still brings out the dramatic best in Jackman ... who assumed the part for the 10th time here. Always a charismatic performer, he’s wonderfully skilled at adding emotional undercurrents to make things more complex than might be expected. That’s evidently what drew him back yet again to a role he knows like the back of his claw – er, hand. The same goes for Stewart, who’s allowed to give Professor X added shadings that make him a more sympathetic character than ever. This is more than a “sidekick” slot for him; he’s integrated into the action sensibly and solidly, and the revised nature of the connection between Xavier and Logan proves critical to the story. “Logan” enabled Jackman and company to give the title figure a very effective screen coda. By making the superhuman all too human, he was given new life, something that was quite ironic since this presumably was his swan song. However, with Jackman soon to be freed up from his Broadway engagement in “The Music Man,” one never knows what the future might hold for him. And that just might include yet another wolfen turn.
“Real Steel” (2011): A computer-generated, boxing robot could steal a movie from anyone, but it’s to the credit of Jackman’s heartfelt performance as a struggling promoter that it doesn’t. “Australia” (2008): Good-looking as it is, this drama doesn’t achieve the epic sweep it aims for, but Jackman ably fulfills his mission to play a hunky ranch hand. “Happy Feet” (2006): A heard-butnot-seen Jackman has – and is – fun as an animated penguin named Memphis. “The Prestige” (2006): Jackman and Christian Bale compete as magicians in director and co-writer Christopher Nolan’s intelligent melodrama. “X-Men” (2000): Jackman zoomed into international screen stardom with his initial performance as Wolverine in this Marvel Comics adaptation.
Going meatless doesn’t have to be boring, says ‘Today Food’ correspondent Samah Dada BY GEORGE DICKIE
As a food blogger and an advocate for plant-based eating, “Today Food” correspondent Samah Dada is all about easy and healthy recipes. In fact, her go-to snack is pretty healthy as well. “I could eat hummus for every single meal and be totally happy,” she admits. “And I think that might be weird for others but for me it’s perfectly normal. It’s just so good and it’s interesting because depending on where you are getting it, there’s just a lot of different variations. ... You know, I was actually in Spain with my family and I was in Grenada and there is, of course, a lot of Arab influence over there. And eating hummus there is so much different than eating it somewhere else.” Now in her third season as the host of “Cooking,” Dada travels the U.S. to explore the meatless food and culinary industries, interview farmers, chefs and experts and then use what she’s learned to create recipes that viewers can make at
home. From meat substitutes to vegetarian comfort foods, the California native of Indian descent endeavors to sort out the substance from the hype while exploding a few myths about going meatless. “I think the most important one for me,” she says, “is this idea that plantbased cooking and eating is boring, that it’s a plate of steamed broccoli or that it’s a salad. And I think that really misses a huge portion of plant-based cooking, which is being able to work with vegetables in a way where you can add heat, you can add spice and it totally transforms the flavor profile of a dish. “I obviously am Indian and I’ve learned to work with spice for as long as I can remember,” she continues, “and I think a lot of people are kind of intimidated by that so they don’t really know how to work with spice in order to amp up the flavor of their vegetables or in order to make it more interesting.”
She’s also a subscriber to the philosophy of less is more, which is why most of the recipes she creates for “Cooking” and for her videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are eight ingredients or fewer. “I like to look at ingredients and pare them down to things that people can pronounce and things that people can recognize,” she explains. “For example, most of my baked goods are made with mint flour and coconut flour and coconut sugar. ... And using those minimal ingredients not only makes it I guess digestible for somebody to make at home because it’s easy, but it also makes the recipes a lot more inclusive for people who have dietary preferences or restrictions. ... “But I think by making my recipes with really minimal ingredients and making them accessible, I hope to encourage more people to cook and feel really empowered while doing so.”

Sylvester Stallone has dabbled in home-screen acting, but now, he’s going all-in. The action icon who made Rocky Balboa and John Rambo household names tackles a new character tailored to his style in “Tulsa Kivng,” a Paramount+ drama that begins streaming Sunday, Nov. 13. Created by Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”) – also an executive producer of the series alongside Stallone and “The Sopranos” alum Terence Winter – the show gives the star his first continuing weekly role as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, who leaves a 25-year prison term expecting to be rewarded for literally having killed for his Mob boss. Instead, he’s exiled from New York to Tulsa, Okla., where he builds a new “crew” of his own from some of the diverse people he encounters. The regular cast also includes Emmy winner Dana Delany, Martin Starr, Max Casella (“Doogie

“JEEPERS CREEPERS: REBORN” Indeed, a horror franchise gets a revival with this thriller, casting Sydney Craven and Imran Adams as a young couple who attend a horror-themed festival in Louisiana. As one might expect from an entry in this series, the sinister Creeper (Jarreau Benjamin) soon shows his hand, turning what was meant to be a fun event into an occasion for terror. Interestingly, though the production began by filming on location, it moved to England (where star Craven is from) for completion. Pre-9/11, probably the rudest awakening Americans got in terms of the U.S. relationship with the Middle East came with the Iranian hostage crisis. In 1979 when Iranian students stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 52 diplomats, Marines and civilians hostage and held them for 444 days, Americans were totally blind-sided by the hostility from a country that had previously been an ally. “Why do they hate us?” became the common refrain, one that still reverberates today. Answering that question is at the heart of the “American Experience” documentary “Taken Hostage,” airing Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 14 and 15 (check local listings). Told from the perspectives of former hostage Barry Rosen and his wife Barbara as well as government and military officials and female journalists covering the story, the film examines not only how the crisis upended U.S. policy in the Middle East but also the events that led up to it. “The hostage crisis was the tail end of an enormous drama of America trying to basically create a little America in the heart of the Middle East,” explains Robert Stone, the documentary’s writer, producer and Family Viewing Ratings V Violence N Nudity
1961 film casts him as a recent military veteran (which Presley actually was at the time) who wants to pave his own path upon returning home, though his mother wants him to follow in the family’s career footsteps as a fruit-company manager. It’s well worth noting that Mom is played by Angela Lansbury, and she’s not too thrilled about her son’s decision to become a tour guide. Much happier are the teacher (Nancy Walters) and teenagers who become his first clients, though his girlfriend (Joan Blackman) isn’t pleased about his being in their company. Though the title song was moderately successful for Presley, the most enduring tune on the soundtrack is “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Howard McNear, alias barber Floyd on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has a sizable supporting role. ››› (Not rated)
“GIGI & NATE” Many years ago, the suspense movie “Monkey Shines” focused on the connection between a quadriplegic man and a monkey trained to assist him. This factinspired drama centers on a similar relationship but without

You really can’t understand everything that’s transpired in the last 40 years, the wars and the conflicts in the Middle East that have dragged America back in time and time again ... without understanding this extraordinary backstory that begins shortly after World War II.” Which most Americans at the time were unaware of. All they knew was that their country was enduring humiliation at the hands of Islamic fundamentalists, brought to them on the nightly news. Outrage and anger grew. “It was the first time we had ever had a foreign policy crisis that was actually on television every day, and it was quite unusual ...,” notes Gary Sick, a senior member of President Jimmy Carter’s national security team, who appears in the film. “That had an impact. ... We also forget that this was really the first contact the United States ever had with political Islam. ... Most of us had never really heard of this before or never took it seriously, that basically an Islamic group could take over and run a country with clerics. That was not something that had happened before.”

His mother (Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, also starring currently in the CBS series “So Help Me Todd”) helps match him to an animal companion, and though a strong bond is forged relatively quickly, that is soon threatened by others who want the monkey banned.
