‘Gone but Not Forgotten’ 2022: Farewell to some TV legends

As always, the end of a calendar year is a time to reflect on familiar entertainers who left us during the preceding 12 months. Here’s a remembrance of some television staples.

Angela Lansbury: After legendary successes on Broadway and the movie screen, this icon made a permanent impact on the TV landscape as “Murder, She Wrote’s” Jessica Fletcher.

Bob Saget: “Full House’s” beloved Danny Tanner had another major TV role as the narrator of “How I Met Your Mother.”

Kirstie Alley: “Cheers” and “Veronica’s Closet” were a couple of memorable television stops for this distinctively earthy two-time Primetime Emmy winner.

James Caan: Following many successful films, this rugged actor came to series TV in “Las Vegas” and “Back in the Game.”

Ray Liotta: Though principally a movie actor, Liotta brought his trademark intensity to the police series “Shades of Blue” and earned a Primetime Emmy for an “ER” guest role.

Sidney Poitier: This esteemed Oscar winner brought his talent to TV in a number of projects including a sequel to “To Sir, With Love” (directed by Peter Bogdanovich, who died on the same day).

Nichelle Nichols: This “Star Trek” essential’s portrayal of Lt. Uhura was iconic in multiple ways ... and the series and movies will continue to make it so.

Leslie Jordan: This much-loved sitcom veteran was costarring in Fox’s “Call Me Kat” at the time of his passing.

Bob McGrath: This very friendly face often was musical while gently teaching lessons to the first couple of generations of “Sesame Street” viewers.

Tony Dow: “Gee, Beav.” The show was called “Leave It to Beaver,” but big brother Wally Cleaver also was a crucial part of it.

John Aniston: Jennifer’s father, who had a very long run as Victor Kiriakis on “Days of Our Lives,” received a Lifetime Achievement honor at last summer’s Daytime Emmy Awards.

Clarence Gilyard Jr.: The co-star of “Walker, Texas Ranger” and “Matlock” also had significant movie roles in “Top Gun” and “Die Hard.”

Vin Scully: One of sportscasting’s most recognizable faces and voices was as much a part of baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers as any player.

Anne Heche: This Daytime Emmy winner had recent roles on “Chicago P.D.” and “All Rise.”

Louie Anderson: In a variety of projects, this Primetime Emmy-winning comedian made his mark.

Dwayne Hickman: “Dobie Gillis” was a popular romantic-comedy hero in the hands of this actor who became a network executive later.

Howard Hesseman: An actual disc jockey earlier in his career, the actor drew on that experience to portray “WKRP in Cincinnati’s” Dr. Johnny Fever.

Larry Storch: Known for doing many comedic roles over the years, the actor’s Corporal Agarn on “F Troop” was his signature part.

Joe E. Tata and Denise Dowse: Two of “Beverly Hills, 90210’s” resident adults gave the show’s central younger characters some valuable life lessons.

Liz Sheridan and Estelle Harris: The actresses who played Jerry and George’s mothers were invaluable to “Seinfeld.”

Roger E. Mosley: Whenever the original “Magnum, P.I.” needed a helicopter ride, pilot T.C. was a handy pal to have.

David Birney: This accomplished actor married his “wife” on the sitcom “Bridget Loves Bernie,” Meredith Baxter (though they later divorced).

Robert Morse: This Tony and Primetime Emmy-winning Broadway veteran imbued “Mad Men’s” Bert Cooper with his unique spirit.

Q&A with Peter Billingsley

What do you think keeps “A Christmas Story” coming back for its usual 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT every holiday season?

There’s a very loyal fan base for that movie. Those who like it know it and quote it, and it’s a part of the family tradition of Christmas for them. And we have not infringed on the reputation, or their enjoyment, of that film.

Do you watch the film yourself during the holidays?

The movie usually does wind up being on at my house, because we do Christmas with a lot of family and a lot of kids. And they like it, not just because their uncle is in it, but on that level of it being a tradition. It’s been enough years that it seems kind of normal when it’s on the kitchen TV, and you just hear it when you’re walking through to get some more coffee.

‘That’s Entertainment!,’ indeed: Musicals get their moment again

If you love movies, and movie musicals more specifically, chances are good that you already know the many delights of “That’s Entertainment!”

Originally devised by MGM as a tribute to the studio’s 50th anniversary, the 1974 compilation of clips has become a New Year’s Eve staple on Turner Classic Movies. The channel will maintain the tradition by showing it again during the daytime on Saturday, Dec. 31, along with the three sequels ... but the first film offers the cream of the crop, drawing upon many of the top song-anddance sequences in MGM history, with some extra curios (such as an all-star luncheon) providing additional pleasure.

The picture is smartly organized into segments, each introduced and narrated by a star with an MGM connection, beginning with Frank Sinatra (who opens the movie with an amusing look at how many times “Singin’ in the Rain” has been used in different attractions). Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli (who reflects on the MGM career of her mother, Judy Garland), Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor follow as other hosts.

The march of time allows most of them to wax humorous about their earlier days on screen, with Stewart noting that he was no singer (evidence is offered), yet such vocalizing was among the requirements for many of the studio’s talents.

Similarly, Clark Gable and Joan Crawford are seen attempting to dance their way through a couple of numbers.

Fans of such classics as “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “Show Boat,” “High Society” and “Gigi” will find them all represented, but the closing segment is reserved for what’s generally acknowledged as a true masterpiece among MGM-musical segments: Gene Kelly’s energetic ballet from “An American in Paris.”

“That’s Entertainment!” became a huge hit, arguably even more than MGM executives of that time anticipated ... and since such success typically breeds imitation, “That’s Entertainment, Part 2,” “That’s Entertainment! III” and “That’s Dancing!” (the latter borrowing from other studios to include such attractions as “Saturday Night Fever”) all came afterward. They’re fine as supplementary movies, but it’s fairly obvious that their makers had to dig deeper in the vaults to come up with the material for them.

TCM shows many of the full-length features excerpted in “That’s Entertainment!” frequently, so in a way, the movie also serves as a long commercial for the channel. That’s OK, though; when the content is this genuinely entertaining, all is forgiven and acceptable. “That’s Entertainment!” remains a great way to see a year out, and to remind viewers of how timeless so many movies truly are.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Top 10 Movies

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966): Forget about glamour in this case. Taylor was rewarded with her second Oscar for playing it raw and shrewish opposite an equally dowdy Burton in debuting film director Mike Nichols’ searing version of Edward Albee’s play about arguably the Worst. Dinner. Party. Ever.

“Cleopatra” (1963): Say what you will – and much has been, for almost 60 years – but this costly, almost studio-busting monument to Hollywood excess may well be the ultimate star vehicle for any actress, with Taylor glamorously regal as (of course) the queen of Egypt.

“The V.I.P.s” (1963): Even if it’s admittedly soapy in nature, this multi-plot saga of passengers fogged in at a London airport was a gossip lover’s dream for the first substantial view it gave of Taylor and Richard Burton at the peak of their real-life romance.

“Butterfield 8” (1960): Taylor earned her first Academy Award – opposite, among others, then-husband Eddie Fisher – for novelist John O’Hara’s potboiler about a model and her questionable personal liaisons.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958): “Maggie the cat is alive!” Indeed she was with Taylor portraying her, caught between her husband (Paul Newman) and his estranged, dying father (Burl Ives) in the steamy Tennessee Williams play.

“Giant” (1956): In one of her best roles, Taylor played a privileged Texan drawn to both her rancher husband (Rock Hudson) and an indomitable rebel (James Dean, in his final role) in the film version of Edna Ferber’s sprawling novel that earned director George Stevens his second Oscar.

“A Place in the Sun” (1951): Also guided here by Oscar-winning director Stevens, Taylor has her allure set on “high” as a socialite who attracts a poor but earnest young man (Montgomery Clift) already involved with another woman (Shelley Winters) who is going to have his child.

“Father of the Bride” (1950): Taylor pretty much bade farewell to the “ingenue” stage of her career with this comedy classic, casting her as the soon-to-wed daughter of the dad (Spencer Tracy) who stresses out over the wedding plans.

A family-owned restaurant thrives in San Francisco on ‘Chef Dynasty: House of Fang’

If family dynamics served with a side of restaurant business is what you crave, a docuseries coming to Food Network and discovery+ may sate the palate.

In “Chef Dynasty: House of Fang,” premiering Tuesday, Dec. 27, viewers are introduced to the Fang family of San Francisco, who own and operate the House of Nanking, a popular Chinese eatery and fixture on the Financial District culinary scene since 1988.

At the restaurant’s heart are its father/ daughter co-owners Peter and Kathy Fang, who also represent its yin and yang. While Peter, 74, is old school and tends to prefer the recipes that made the restaurant the hot destination it is, 40-year-old Kathy feels it’s important to modernize the menu, take risks and play to young influencers. And while there is a natural conflict between these forces, “Chef Dynasty” isn’t about arguments and

drama, stresses Kathy Fang, as much as it is a window into the running of a successful family restaurant. And it all starts with her and Peter.

“There’s this whole theory with my dad that if it’s not broken don’t fix it,” she explains. “And it’s hard sometimes because my dad has been so successful with House of Nanking, you can’t argue with him ...

. He’s always talking about people coming in and wanting the same things. They don’t want new dishes; they want the same friggin’ thing that they had 20 years ago. They’ll be sad if it’s not there anymore. So there are a lot of valid points to what my dad is saying and I take all those into account.

“But we also still have to innovate and change with the times,” she continues, “because I don’t think you can do the same exact thing for 50 years. Maybe you can do it for 40 years, 45, but it’s not going to work 60 to 80 if we want to create this dynasty. Maybe my kids will want to do this, too, then we do have to evolve. ... I’m trying to

make that happen but I want my dad on board every step of the way.”

Along with the requisite kitchen scenes with staff, there will be shots of dinner service. For this, cameras were brought into the dining room, which made some diners uncomfortable and request seating off camera. But others were intrigued and embraced the experience.

“Some people come here to celebrate birthdays,” Fang notes, “and they’re so excited that they could actually be on the show on the day of their birthday that people stayed longer. They’re like, ‘We’re going to get more drinks. I hope you don’t mind. We’re going to stay at this table the whole time.’ ”

“So what I was concerned about early on, (that) it might disrupt the business, kind of faded away later as we realized that most of the time people were actually very excited about it.”

Happy New Year’s Eve! TV gets into the spirit

Variety won’t be lacking as television rings in 2023.

Whatever sort of music a viewer may prefer, there will be something that fits the bill ... but it doesn’t stop there, with classic movies and recaps of 2022 also providing television options on Saturday, Dec. 31. Here’s a look at some of the choices.

“A Toast to 2022!” (NBC): Various personalities reflect on notable events and individuals of the past 12 months.

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2023” (ABC): It simply wouldn’t be the holiday without this. Seacrest holds forth in New York’s Times Square once again, welcoming music with the world-famous descent of the illuminated globe that will mark the start of the new

year. Co-hosts include Ciara (at Disneyland), Billy Porter (New Orleans) and D-Nice (Los Angeles).

“New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash” (CBS, Paramount+): As the country-music capital becomes the site of a New Year’s Eve telecast again, Jimmie Allen and Elle King team with “Entertainment Tonight’s” Rachel Smith as the hosting trio. Also on the roster of scheduled performers are

Brooks & Dunn, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town and Zac Brown Band. This also starts in primetime, then continues in late-night.

“Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” (NBC, Peacock): Miley Cyrus will be in Miami for the second consecutive year to stage her own televised bash, with quite a noteworthy co-host to assist her – Dolly Parton, returning a favor in a sense to Cyrus, who appeared recently in the TV movie “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas.”

“United in Song 2022: Ringing in the New Year Together” (PBS; check local listings): The latest variation of a special that public television has shown for several years, this program sees the American Symphony Orchestra joined by vocalists from various categories.

“New Year’s Eve With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” (CNN): The close pals who have been teamed to cover Times Square festivities for

a number of years do it again, though the overall merriment may be slightly less this year. Reportedly, an edict has been issued by CNN that any participants except the two hosts cannot drink on the air.

The Disney parks celebrate the holidays again

If it’s Christmas, it’s time again to visit the Disney resorts ... if only via your television screen.

A yuletide gala has been a tradition of the holiday for many years at those parks, and a TV version long has been part of it. Such is the case again as ABC broadcasts the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade on Sunday, Dec. 25, with sibling dancers Derek and Julianne Hough returning to preside over the festivities.

In case you think you saw them do similar duty very recently, you’re right. On Thanksgiving weekend, they also served as the hosts of “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration,” a similar special that featured many music acts in settings within the Disney locales. In fact, some of those guests also are the same – not a surprise, since much of the cast is used for both programs each year.

On the Christmas Day show, the Houghs will perform the number “Officially Christmas.” The other stars featured include Black Eyed Peas (singing “Carol of the Bells”), Chloe Flower (“A Liberace Christmas”),

spouses David Foster and Katharine McPhee (offering both “Grown-Up Christmas List,” which Foster composed the melody for, and “Blue Christmas”), Maren Morris (doing the Disney standard “When You Wish Upon a Star”), Meghan Trainor (“My Kind of Present”), Ne-Yo (“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”) and the trio Il Volo (“Happy Christmas War Is Over”).

The Disney-flavored Christmas Day parade telecast dates back to the days when Regis Philbin and “Good Morning America” alum Joan Lunden traditionally made their way to Florida’s Walt Disney World for the telecast. Southern California’s Disneyland and the European Disney parks also will be showcased during the special.

It also comes at a time when The Walt Disney Company is making a recommitment to its roots under newly returned chief executive officer Robert Iger. The holidays are a particularly important period for those locations and the company anyway, given the number of visitors seeking seasonal fun, so don’t be surprised if there seems to be some extra energy as that yuletide cheer is shared by TV this year.

“HALLOWEEN ENDS”

It’s always risky to call the supposed final chapter of a popular franchise the definitive ending, should there be the desire for another revival, but the makers of this horror chapter maintain that’s the case. If so, it’s the last stand for Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, the heroine who has stood up to homicidal Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) over a 44-year span. Here, she’s involved in a familiar scenario, probing whether a babysitter had a hand in the fate of his young charge –

and since all roads in this series lead to Michael, you can guess the showdown that inevitably happens. Andi Matichak returns as Laurie’s granddaughter, and director and co-writer David Gordon Green is back from the previous two installments. DVD extras: audio commentary by cast and crew members; seven “making-of” documentaries; deleted and extended scenes. ››› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Bluray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand)

“FATHER OF THE BRIDE”

A durable family-comedy plot served both Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin well, and in this latest version, Andy Garcia gets a turn at the title role. His character is harried in his own way as he tries to adjust to the idea of his eldest daughter (Adria Arjuna) getting married, and there’s an added complication not in the earlier editions: Dad’s wife (music superstar Gloria Estefan) wants a divorce. And if that’s not enough, miserable weather may disrupt the nuptials. Estefan’s daughter Emily plays her mother’s character at a younger age. Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta, Enrique Murciano and “Saturday Night

Live’s” Chloe Fineman also are featured. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Digital and On Demand)

“THE STAIRCASE: THE LIMITED SERIES”

Originally told in the form of a true-crime documentary, this dramatic HBO Max adaptation examines the case of a writer (played here by Colin Firth) suspected in the death of his second wife, a well-known businesswoman (Toni Collette) found at the bottom of a staircase in the family home. The clan becomes mired in various legal matters as the investigation develops, also drawing the attention of a documentary crew – and thus paying heed to the original project about the case in something of a meta way. Michael Stuhlbarg, Parker Posey, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Odessa Young and Trini Alvarado also are featured. Some of those who worked on the original version of the story had criticisms of this dramatization. ››› (Not rated, AS, P, V)

“TOP GUN: MAVERICK”

Just as it became the top hit of 2022 at the movie box office – by far – this long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise’s naval-aviator

classic has made its mark loudly on home media, expectedly. Still bucking authority as a test pilot, and paying a professional price for it, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is assigned to train a new class of Top Gun flyers, one of them being the son (Miles Teller) of his late co-pilot Goose. There’s a natural tension between the two men, due largely to a promise made by Maverick that is hindering the younger man’s career. Jennifer Connelly also stars as an ex-flame with whom Maverick reunites, with Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Ed Harris also appearing ... and Val Kilmer reprising his “Iceman” role from the original film. As it was the first time, the bountiful aerial footage is thrilling. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand)

“JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION”

In a way, the fantasy-adventure franchise cycles back to its roots with this latest chapter, reuniting “Jurassic Park” stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum ... and teaming them with “Jurassic World” fixtures Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Dinosaurs again roam the planet after the destruction of the island that housed the cloned creatures, and

not only do they pose perils of their own, they have impacts on the environment that generate natural dangers. The outcome of the situation will determine whether contemporary mankind and prehistoric beings can coexist. Executive-produced by original “Jurassic” director Steven Spielberg, the film expectedly boasts bountiful special effects. Co-star B.D. Wong returns as well, and Campbell Scott, DeWanda Wise and Kristoffer Polaha also appear. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand)
