Cybill Shepherd and Lifetime probe ‘How to Murder Your Husband’

A writer who penned an essay that detailed killing a spouse, and then actually put it into practice, is the sort of role that gets Cybill Shepherd fully engaged in acting again.

The former “Moonlighting” and “Cybill” actress returns to television in the title part of the new Lifetime movie “How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story,” which debuts Saturday, Jan. 14 ... several months after Nancy Crampton Brophy was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2018 death of her mate Daniel (played by Steve Guttenberg), a chef in Portland, Ore. Written and directed by Stephen Tolkin, who also made Lifetime’s recent drama “House of Chains,” the new film is part of the network’s ongoing “Ripped From the Headlines” franchise.

In discussing the new movie, Shepherd is careful and precise to use the word “allegedly” often in regard to the murder case. “I’ve been instructed to

use certain words,” she explains. “This was an amazing challenge, and one that I could not resist. When they sent me the first still photos to approve, the person I saw with that gray wig on was not me. I didn’t kill any of those photographs, though I had the right to, but it was just another person to me.”

Famous for such movies as “Three Men and a Baby” and the “Police Academy” comedies, Guttenberg concurs that in real life, Shepherd is “180 degrees away from Nancy. When I would watch her act, there were so many times when I looked in her eyes and she really was embodying this woman, who was very complicated in an allegedly dangerous way.”

Saying that with Guttenberg, she “could not think of a kinder nor more wonderful person to try to murder,” Shepherd notes that she is “very aware of the rise in violent crime in this country. I don’t think (a movie like this) encourages that, because you see that

this woman does pay the price for what she allegedly did.”

The work ethic that Shepherd and Guttenberg share also facilitated the making of “How to Murder Your Husband,” they both agree. “I really enjoy making moments work and scenes work,” Guttenberg reflects, “and Cybill has been in some of the greatest movies ever made (‘The Last Picture Show,’ ‘Taxi Driver,’ etc.) ... and, of course, ‘Moonlighting.’ I was protected by a really good actress.”

Shepherd allows that she “had not worked for a couple of years, and when the possibility of doing this came along, this was (a type of role) I had never played. I’m always interested in playing something that I haven’t lived, because it gives me a chance to learn something as a human being. I hope it does, anyway.”

Q&A with Alexandra Daddario

Were you familiar with the source material? And besides the food, which is a given, what’s your favorite thing about New Orleans?

I was not familiar with the source material prior to doing the show. I’m almost done with the book now as we’re finishing the series. ... I’m really getting into Anne Rice, reading a lot of her interviews and learning more about her and the metaphors and the material and where these characters came from, where these crazy ideas came from, and it’s been amazing. Anne Rice is a fascinating woman. Very, very interesting person. And New Orleans, I love the people. The people are really laid back and really – I mean because of the environment that they live in and all the storms they’ve been through and everything they’ve been through, they’re really close-knit. It has a sort of small town family vibe which is wonderful.

‘Titanic’ sails again on Showtime

The basic story had been told earlier in other films and television projects, but even though it matches a fictional romance to facts of the ocean disaster, the Oscar-winning 1997 version of “Titanic” is the definitive one for many people.

Being presented by Showtime on Wednesday, Jan. 11, writer-director James Cameron’s epic is a beautifully structured saga the cleverly takes the audience from contemporary times – as a treasure hunter (Bill Paxton) and his colleagues scour the ship’s sunken wreckage – back to its maiden voyage in 1912, as it’s launched with much pomp and circumstance.

Various passengers are introduced, including the allegedly “unsinkable” Molly Brown (played here by Kathy Bates), but two key characters are the ones who came to matter most to the vast majority of moviegoers: privileged Rose and stowaway Jack, roles that elevated the highly charismatic-together Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio to superstardom. (Their later reteaming in “Revolutionary Road” surely was a bid to benefit from their iconic teamwork here, good as they also are in that picture.)

From evading Rose’s spurned and vengeful fiance Cal (Billy Zane) to navigating blocked and/ or flooded passageways, the couple’s experience aboard the Titanic turns into an endless series

of perils ... ultimately enhancing and fusing their affection for each other, to the point where the legendary phrase “I’ll never let go” is much more than mere lip service.

For as personal as the Jack-and-Rose story is, the production that surrounds them is massive and impressive, certainly justifying the 11 Academy Award wins that included best picture and best director (and making for what was one of the highest-rated Oscar telecasts to date, since so many observers were invested in how the movie fared in that ceremony). Cameron united Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox together to finance the project, and the result is stunning visually, particularly in scenes of the ocean liner in its final throes.

One note about the music, since some viewers are bound to come back to the film for a certain part of it: The hugely popular “Titanic” theme song “My Heart Will Go On,” composed by James Horner and Will Jennings and performed by Celine Dion, plays only over the closing credits.

Just over 25 years after its release, “Titanic” remains a singular screen experience, the type that always will have a large and loyal base of devotees. And despite the many TV showings it’s had, such viewership potential undoubtedly gives Showtime confidence in turning most of a night over to it again.

Kate Winslet’s Top 10 Movies

“Mildred Pierce” (TV, 2011): Joan Crawford made the role iconic, but Winslet gives complete freshness to the part of the self-sacrificing mother.

“Revolutionary Road” (2008): In Winslet’s reunion with her “Titanic” leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s to both stars’ credit that they’re equally effective together.

“The Reader” (2008): In an Oscar-nominated performance, Winslet is stunning as the older woman whose intense World War II-era liaison with a youngster comes back to haunt her.

“The Holiday” (2006): The movie may seem lightweight, but Winslet ideally captures her character’s heartbreak and renewal of hope.

“Little Children” (2006): An excellent Winslet is part of the fine ensemble in a saga of disintegrating relationships and new connections.

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004): Winslet revels in her offbeat character in this comedy about heart and spirit succeeding over erased memories.

“Iris” (2001): Winslet splits the title role – with Judi Dench – as writer Iris Murdoch, whose husband stuck by her through times bright and dark.

“Titanic” (1997): Well, of course. The history-based blockbuster that made Winslet an international star also made her and Leonardo DiCaprio an iconic screen couple for all time.

“Sense and Sensibility” (1995): The Jane Austen classic about sisters and their romances furnished Winslet with a great role.

“Heavenly Creatures” (1994): Directed by Peter Jackson, Winslet’s memorable first film recounts the true story of two young women who would do anything to preserve their friendship.

It’s the second week of January – how are your New Year’s resolutions doing?

If eating healthier is one of them, Cooking Channel online has you covered, offering up ideas for meal makeovers and low-calorie desserts that are imaginative and look delicious.

Carbs get a bad rap these days. But really, who can resist pasta? One health-conscious option for those lovers of all things noodle is Giada De Laurentiis’ lemon basil spaghetti (www.cookingchanneltv.com/videos/lemon-basil-spaghetti-0139045), which she makes from whole wheat spaghetti, lemon, basil, garlic and salmon and serves over a bed of lettuce of your choice. Yum.

Along those same lines, there is Ellie Krieger’s macaroni and four cheeses (www. cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/macaroni-and-4-cheeses-1945972). The calorie count for a dish can reach four figures, but Krieger has found a way to cut into that

by substituting low-fat milk and part-skim ricotta for the full-power versions and also mixing in pureed winter squash to bump up the creaminess. Yes, there are still caloric ingredients like sharp cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses in this mix but if mac and cheese is what you absolutely crave, this is the way you have it at a fraction of the calories – 393 per serving to be exact.

There is no more comforting a comfort food than meatloaf and Krieger has her own version with her turkey meatloaf (www. cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/ moms-turkey-meatloaf-1946007), which she makes with ground turkey (instead of beef), quick oats (instead bread crumbs), skim milk (instead of whole) and mixes them with eggs, Worcestershire sauce, red bell pepper, tomato sauce, salt, pepper and ketchup. At 207 calories a serving, it’s comfort without the guilt. In terms of healthy proteins, there are few healthier than salmon and Dave Lieberman brings forth a personal favorite with what he

calls “Dad’s poached salmon” (www. cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/ packages/fresh-start-healthy-eating/ healthy-foods-and-healthy-diet-ideas/ videos/healthy-weeknight-dinners).

For this dish, he first creates a stock from the skeleton of a fileted salmon, celery, carrots, white wine, water and seasonings, which he sifts and uses to poach the salmon. There’s a lot more procedure and ingredients than we can mention here but you get the idea – this dish is special and very nutritious.

For something more exotic, try De Laurentiis’ chicken saltimbocca (www. cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/chicken-saltimbocca-1942157). She makes hers with chicken cutlets pounded flat, prosciutto, frozen chopped spinach, grated parmesan, chicken broth and lemon juice. It tastes sinful but at 227 calories per serving it’s a nice guilt-free indulgence.

Grief weighs heavily on ‘Your Honor’ in

Season 2 of Showtime legal thriller

The image of a bearded, unkempt Bryan Cranston tells you a great deal about what’s ahead for “Your Honor” in the second and final season of the Showtime legal thriller.

Indeed, as the new round gets underway Friday, Jan. 13, on Showtime’s online and On Demand platforms (and Sunday, Jan. 15, on cable), Cranston’s character of New Orleans Judge Michael Desiato is in a state of grief so profound following the accidental shooting of son Adam (Hunter Doohan) in the closing moments of Season 1 that he’s really stopped caring about much of anything. Which prompted the show’s star and executive producer to consider how that might look on screen – and on himself.

“It’s really allowed me to reflect on my own personal life,” the actor explains, “and the part of the process of dealing with tragedy or disappointment or grief is to allow yourself to feel it, to truly

be in it and not try to hastily get out of that but put your arms around grief and almost welcome it as a way of process to then work through it. I think, the more we try to resist it, the longer it takes to process it, and it may then linger. It also may create and exacerbate other situations in your life. So, I think ... it’s allowing me to mature in understanding all of life and its ups and downs.”

Beyond Michael’s grief, Desire Gang leader Big Mo (Andrene Ward-Hammond) will be making waves this season

as she pushes to expand her empire throughout the city with the help of Little Mo (Machekanyanga); Fia Baxter (Lilli Kay) is forced to reckon with her family’s true nature in the wake of her boyfriend’s shooting while her brother Carlo (Jimi Stanton) is determined to follow in his father Jimmy’s (Michael Stuhlbarg) criminal footsteps; and Eugene’s (Benjamin Flores Jr.) attempt to avenge his brother’s death threatens to turn New Orleans into a tinder box ready to explode into all-out war.

Also, Rosie Perez joins the cast as Olivia Delmont, a charismatic U.S. Attorney who must manipulate an unwilling asset to bring down a crime organization. Other cast returning this season include Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Charlie Figaro, a local politician and Michael’s best friend; Hope Davis as Jimmy’s formidable wife Gina; and Margo Martindale as Sen. Elizabeth Guthrie, the mother of Jimmy’s late wife.

“I think what’s hopefully really interesting about Season 2, or one of the aspects, is that it’s a continuation from Season 1, but it’s not a reset and a redo ...,” explains Joey Hartstone, who replaces creator Peter Moffat as showrunner this season.

“So, expect to see the characters that you know, but because they all endured such trauma in Season 1, it’s impacted who they are and often changed who they are and how they react (and) are somewhat different from who you met.”

MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH: SEASON ONE”

It has familiar elements from earlier incarnations, but this Showtime series version (which ended up having only this one season) uses those largely to go its own way. Following the Walter Tevis novel and the David Bowie-starring 1976 movie, this take on the story of an alien who comes to our planet casts Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave,” “Love Actually”) as an

extraterrestrial named Faraday, whose presence on Earth could dictate the future of mankind –something that already started to be charted by Thomas Jerome Newton, the Bowie character who’s portrayed here by another “Love Actually” alum, Bill Nighy. Naomie Harris (“Moonlight,” “Skyfall”) also has a prominent role as a scientist who monitors the situation closely. Jimmi Simpson, Rob Delaney, Kate Mulgrew and Clarke Peters are among other cast regulars. Executive producers include Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, who worked together previously on “Clarice.” ››› (Not rated: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

“FEAR THE WALKING DEAD: SEASON 7”

The after-effects of the nuclear crisis that ended the previous season form a major part of this round of the AMC horrordrama series. Morgan (Lennie James, who also directed two of the episodes here) and his followers have to renegotiate their way through what already was a bleak Texas atmosphere, with certain parties disagreeing

over exactly how to proceed ... which only adds to the already considerable strife. The cast is marked by various comings and goings, but Colman Domingo, Mo Collins, Karen David, Jenna Elfman and Keith Carradine are present. DVD extras: audio commentary by cast and crew members on several episodes. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and Digital)

“THE RETURN OF TANYA TUCKER: FEATURING BRANDI CARLILE”

Tucker was among the first major female country-music artists at a time when there still weren’t many of them, using a self-styled and somewhat rebellious image to build a sizable fan base ... but she fell on hard times professionally, with her oncesuccessful career taking a big hit. One of her successors on the charts and in concert, Carlile was inspired to put her on the comeback trail by composing an entire album for her – and this documentary, a film-festival favorite last year, traces that process. It also spends quite a bit of time on Tucker’s history,

Can a changed Golden Globe Awards still retain the reputation of being the “Party of the Year”?

The answer is coming as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ceremony honoring the past year’s movies and television programs returns to NBC, following a period of controversy – mainly over financial questions and a lack of diversity in the organization’s membership – that left the event without a broadcast home last year. Jerrod Carmichael (“The Carmichael Show”) will serve as host as the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards airs Tuesday, Jan. 10 (also streaming on Peacock), with Eddie Murphy receiving the career-commemorating Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Though NBC was the broadcaster of the Golden Globes for many years, the current agreement is for only one year. The looseness of the occasion has been one of its major lures for the viewing audience, but that presumably has been among the issues addressed.

Here are some of the nominees in the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

“THE ESTATE”

A terrific acting ensemble adds extra punch to this dark comedy about relatives who vie to inherit a family member’s fortune. Toni Collette and Anna Faris play sisters who are in business together, but that may not last much longer unless they become beneficiaries of their terminally ill aunt (Kathleen Turner). Others hope to claim their own stake to the wealth, putting the notion that blood runs deeper than money to a big test. Writer-director Dean Craig’s cast also includes David Duchovny and real-life spouses Rosemarie DeWitt and Ron Livingston. ››› (R: AS, N, P)

“GOOD GIRLS: THE COMPLETE SERIES”

This seriocomic NBC series, about several women who become unlikely partners in crime, drew enough of a following to merit a three-

season run. Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Mae Whitman (“Arrested Development”) and Retta (“Parks and Recreation”) play the ladies whose respective circumstances prompt them to band together to improve their financial circumstances ... but through decidedly illegal means, since they rob a supermarket. That sets off an ongoing trail of felonious matters for them, ultimately putting not just their freedom at risk, but their very lives. Reno Wilson, Manny Montana and Matthew Lillard also are in the regular cast. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
