For many an Olympic athlete, a silver medal is a dream realized, the culmination of a life of hard work and training and the crown jewel of a trophy case. For U.S. bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, it conjures thoughts of what she feels was her disappointing performance at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. “It was great to walk away with the silver,” the 33-year-old product of Douglaston, Ga., says, “but I wasn’t satisfied with the way I performed. I wasn’t satisfied with my driving and so my biggest focus this Olympics is to really put together four great runs where I’m driving well. I want to walk away win, lose or draw with a good performance, and I don’t feel like I had that at Sochi, like I was a little bit inconsistent and that’s what caused me to not win the gold medal. But at the same time, you’re super-excited to still be able to make mistakes and win the medal at any stage.” This week, Meyers Taylor and her push athlete Lauren Gibbs will take to the course at the Olympic Sliding Centre in PyeongChang, South Korea, in the second full week of competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics, which air on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. Coming into these games, Meyers Taylor had registered but one win during the 201718 World Cup season, but that has left her far from discouraged. She also points out that she’s been experimenting with different partners and sled configurations. “Some of them have worked, some of them have not worked at all,” she says with a laugh. “But that’s what you’ve got to do Olympic year.” She knows her path to gold will not be easy. She sees stiff competition coming from Stephanie Schneider of Germany, who she says is “really hot” right now but is light on experience, and Canada’s two-time defending Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries. “She knows how to get her four runs,” Meyers Taylor says. “She’s one of the most successful women in our sport so she’s always going to be the No. 1 competitor.” “Four runs” is Meyers Taylor’s mantra. Get in four good runs, be consistent and avoid mistakes. The rest should take care of itself. “It’s been kind of a crazy year but I think it’s all been working together to prepare me for whatever is going to happen at the Games,” she says. “That’s the biggest thing about the Olympics, is you never know what’s going to happen, so you have to be prepared for all kinds of possibilities. ... It’s all working to prepare you, that’s for sure.”

What do you feel the strongest aspect of “Here and Now” is?

I think the show doesn’t stop at any particular place. It just keeps going. Alan (series creator and executive producer Alan Ball) has a lot to say, and I think he has a particular passion for learning. He loves to throw himself into new situations and new arenas, and new imaginative situations as well. This is just from working with him, and one of the great aspects of the show is how many different directions it can go in. One of the truly great things about his writing – and that of the group of writers he attracts, and who choose to work with him – is that every time a character is on the screen, you feel they are the lead. You’re not watching supporting characters.

They’ve been around since the days of slavery and have educated leaders, intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries. But the story of historically black colleges or universities – or HBCUs, as they’re commonly referred to – is relatively unknown. And that’s something the makers of PBS’ “Independent Lens” intend to change. The 90-minute documentary “Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities,” premiering Monday, Feb. 19 (check local listings), offers up a rich history of HBCUs, which include Atlanta’s Spelman College, Howard University in Washington, D.C., Hampton University in Virginia, Tennessee’s Fisk University and Tuskegee University in Alabama. Together, the 100-plus schools of higher learning have turned out the likes of civil rights leaders Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. and W.E.B. Du Bois; novelists Toni Morrison, Alice Walker and Ralph Ellison; TV personality Oprah Winfrey, filmmaker Spike Lee and recording artist/actor Common. “The film is really largely an historical film,” Stanley Nelson, the documentary’s director, told a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif., “and one of the big through lines in the film is how black colleges and black college students have changed America. So

it’s almost like you are looking at American history through the lens of black colleges and through the social movements that have been launched (in) black colleges.” Created at a time when it was illegal in many states to teach African-Americans to read, HBCUs first came to be following the end of the Civil War, mostly in the rural South. On these campuses, intellectual battles were fought that would help determine the future of African-American society, starting with the ideological difference between Washington’s emphasis on technical trades and Du Bois’ more progressive view that HBCUs not be institutes for training labor for white businesses, but places of intellectual rigor and societal transformation.

Hannah Hart wants to do ‘more and better’ In the span of about seven years, Hannah Hart has built herself into something of a cottage industry. She’s created the popular foodie series “My Drunk Kitchen” and her channel MyHarto on YouTube, written two books, produced a movie and several TV shows, racked up about a dozen acting credits and launched her Food Network series “I Hart Food,” in which she explores the signature foods and flavors of various U.S. cities. But ask her what stands out from Season 1 of that show and she’ll tell you every moment does – with one perhaps ranking higher than others. “A memorable moment includes running into George R.R. Martin, the author of ‘Game of Thrones,’ inside a Tecolote (Café), which was crazy,” she says. “We were shooting breakfast and then George R.R. Martin’s in there and he was kind enough to jump in the show with us because he wanted to talk about how much he loves Santa Fe. So that was just wild.” In that episode, which airs as an encore telecast Wednesday, Feb. 21, on Cooking Channel, she takes viewers to the New Mexico capital to check out its culinary scene, which is dominated by the chili pepper. Red or green, it seems everyone there has a strong opinion on these spicy hot delicacies, a topic Hart dove into with enthusiasm. “I’m all about the Scoville scale. I’m a pepper person. ... I’ve been known to dabble,” she says. “There is a huge debate in Santa Fe about red versus green. Some people prefer red sauce, some prefer green sauce, some people love the chili pepper in all of its forms. ... . And the chef we had that day was just so knowledgeable and so passionate about the cuisine that he was just a sheer delight to talk to.”

What book are you currently reading? “ ‘Steppenwolf’ by Hermann Hesse. I’ve never read it and I’m reading it.” What did you have for dinner last night? “We had pesto pasta with really good veggie sausage that my partner’s really into. And we’re not vegetarians or anything, but I do like to try out all the different styles of meat and nonmeat, just because I’m curious about foods in general.” What is your next project? “You know how people always say you’ve got to strike while the iron’s hot? Well for me, I want to make the iron hot by continually striking and so when I think about my next project I just think about continually striking. I feel really great about everything I’ve made so far and I just want to do more and better.”

Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine history and the reigning World Cup and World Ski Champion in the slalom. Vonn, meanwhile, has become a household name. Jumping to the conclusion that Big Bird’s friend is a bird, too, Grover, Elmo, Rosita and Cookie Monster build a large bird feeder so the newcomer will feel welcome. The visitor, Chamki, isn’t a bird at all, so Big Bird explains that friends don’t have to look alike to be close in the new “Chamki Visits Sesame Street.” 8 p.m. on HBO Movie: Notes From the Field Actress and storyteller Anna Deavere Smith brings her critically acclaimed Off-Broadway one-woman show about America’s failed justice system to a much wider audience in this new TV adaptation, which finds Smith portraying an entire gallery of diverse characters. Among them: deli worker Kevin Moore, who caught the Freddie Gray beating on video, and Bree Newsome, the activist who climbed a South Carolina flagpole to remove a Confederate flag from statehouse grounds. Jazz bassist Marcus Shelby provides musical accompaniment. 9 p.m. on BBCA Planet Earth: Blue Planet II One of the best episodes in this series, the new “Coasts” explores how different species of wildlife survive in an environment where two worlds collide. Sea lions may lack the speed to catch the 130-pound tuna that are among their favorite quarries, but by working as a team and literally herding their fishy prey, the sea lions force the tuna into the shallows, where they become easy pickings.
