Fun Facts About Etobicoke • Sits on the western edge of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), only 90 minutes from the U.S. border • The name “Etobicoke” is believed to mean “place where the black/wild alders grow,” which described the area between the Etobicoke Creek and the Humber River (the original boundary of Toronto) • Formed in 1967, when Etobicoke was merged with Long Branch, New Toronto and Mimico, to become a borough in Metropolitan Toronto • Incorporated as a city in 1984
