With the warmest February days on record…just what can we expect from the weather this spring month of March? The birds have already been busy building nests in my garden and just yesterday, the most ginormous bumble bee flew passed my ear as I sat drinking tea in my arbour. Everything is waking up… Talking of which, seagull season will soon be upon us…’Absolute Pest’ ask if you are prepared, in our classified ads at the back of the magazine and you may find some other useful businesses listed. March as always is our spring Weddinglife edition and this one does not disappoint. A plethora of gorgeous articles and images to delight the bride to be is spread across the centre pages. Caroline from the ‘Bridal Boutique’ writes a personal note to brides and ‘Up and Above’ offer some very useful tips for wedding guests. I had the great honour of speaking with Dr Tim Wright, Training Manager at Durrell about this year’s amazing students from all over the globe, staying here in Jersey whilst they participate in the prestigious DESMAN course, all will become clear when reading page 14 onwards. Our gardening section continues the ‘all creatures great and small’ theme, where we talk about the things we can all do to encourage beasties in our garden…good for the garden… good for the environment... good for us.
February edition’s crossword solutions: Across: 3 Mendacity; 8 Bait; 9 Perimeter; 10 Encore; 11 Bears; 14 Times; 15 Seem; 16 Exile; 18 Veal; 20 Visor; 21 Lasts; 24 Flouts; 25 Varieties; 26 Free; 27 Pestilent. Fashion looks at trends for spring and summer; ‘Beige to Bike Shorts’ and look out for our delicious Mother’s Day recipes. In our home section we look at ways to create a home office that inspires and Mark Shields talks about stress in the workplace (making that home office even more attractive!) Road Test this month features the BMW I8 Roadster…a perfect vehicle for getting out and about as the weather warms. Until April…when Easter will be upon us yet again…

ART AND CULTURE
THE VERDICT By Barry Reed As an actor what is the biggest challenge when you are discovering a new character? Apart from learning the words and getting them all in the right order, it’s about getting under the skin of that character and finding out what makes him tick and what makes him sound right as well. Is it difficult for you to do an American accent?
Ian Kelsey (Frank Galvin) with Denis Lill (Moe Katz)
No, it’s never been a problem for me. I was born and brought up in New Zealand and during the war, when I was a baby, we used to have American soldiers billeted in our house from the Pacific Theatre and I think possibly subconsciously when I was one or two I got used to the sounds of these American voices, plus the fact that I was brought up on American movies and I love Westerns.
Following the phenomenal success of its world premiere tour Middle Ground Theatre Company will be bringing this critically acclaimed courtroom sensation to the Jersey Opera House from Wednesday 27 – Saturday 30 March. Frank Galvin, played by Ian Kelsey (Emmerdale, Where The Heart Is, Doctors) is a washed up veteran lawyer and an alcoholic who is dealing with grief, rejection and not fitting into the world he has chosen to be in. He is presented with one last chance to redeem himself when he is given an open-and-shut medical malpractice case that no one thinks he can win. Up against the unforgiving medical establishment and the all-powerful Catholic Church, he courageously refuses an out of court settlement, believing it is negligence that has condemned a young mother. Smelling a cover up, he takes the case and the entire legal system to court. A stunning courtroom thriller made famous by the five times OSCAR nominated Sidney Lumet film with Paul Newman and James Mason, played out on stage by a full cast of fifteen. Veteran star Denis Lill (Only Fools and Horses, The Royal, The Eagle Has Landed) plays Frank’s best friend and mentor, Moe Katz. Here, the actor answers a few questions about his role.
Do you share any of the same personality traits as Moe Katz? Not a single one. I don’t think Moe Katz drinks Earl Grey Tea, which is something I do from time to time not a lot else in common though which actually means I can reinvent myself as the character, right from scratch, and it works, which is a nice part of being an actor. You need to have that chameleon charisma about yourself so you can adapt, adopt and steal outrageously from people.
Describe the character that you are playing in the Verdict? What do you like about the play The Verdict? He’s 75 years old, rather tired and a rather clapped out Jewish lawyer in Boston and he’s the man who plucked our main character of the play, Frank Galvin, off the boat, straight from the war in his U.S Royal Marines uniform.

Durrell Endangered Species Management Graduate Certificate (DESMAN) Participants, 4th February – 26th April 2019 Now the grand old age of 11, my son has left his Cub pack, so it was a few years ago now, that one of the group leaders, Lemur, aka Dr Tim Wright, introduced the Cubs to two gentlemen, from remote parts of the globe, in his capacity as Durrell Conservation Training Manager. The gentlemen enthralled the children with tales of orangutans and poisonous snakes, animal trafficking and what they as conservationists deal with on a daily basis and talked about being thrilled to be in Jersey and participating in the prestigious DESMAN course. Being enthralled myself, as were other parents present, I asked Tim if he would like to share more details with the Jerseylife readership and to my delight, he did…by Juanita Shield-Laignel
Tim introduced the course thus, “The 12-week DESMAN (Durrell Endangered Species Management) course, run in Jersey annually since the 1990’s, is Durrell’s flagship training programme for conservationists from around the world. Each year, around fifteen conservation workers come to Jersey to gain knowledge and the latest skills to enable them to manage and lead conservation projects in their own countries. The course is formally validated by the University of Kent, and participants receive a Graduate Certificate qualification. The training provides a broad range of current conservation theory, practical specific skills in endangered species management, and a range of transferable skills in conservation management, leadership, communication and fundraising. While in Jersey, the participants are also introduced to the history, scenery and culture of our Island.” Following are comments and details of this year’s student line-up; with impressive credentials, they are likely to leave as much of a positive impact on Durrell as Durrell will on them…

Amélie Roberto-Charron Canada’s New Noah (Wildlife Preservation Canada), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Amélie graduated with a BSc in Ecology in 2012 from the University of Alberta. Following graduation she was employed by ‘Beaverhill Bird Observatory’ where she worked for 6 months as Assistant Bander. Then 5 months with environmental consulting company, ‘Fiera Biological Consulting Ltd’ was followed by a further two years, but this time as the Executive Director, back at ‘Beaverhill’. After that Amélie pursued an MSc at the University of Manitoba and says, “I graduated with my MSc in 2018 and then was selected as Canada's ‘New Noah’. For the past 5 months I have been volunteering with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. With DESMAN, I hope to develop and diversify my knowledge of conservation techniques, to learn components of conservation theory and gain hands on skills in endangered species recovery.” The ‘New Noah’ scheme provides training to one promising Canadian conservationist annually, run by Wildlife Preservation Canada, Durrell’s Canadian ‘sister trust’ established by Gerald Durrell in 1985.

Erwin Amavassee Project Coordinator, Friends of the Environment, Tamarin, Mauritius Erwin is a biologist and project coordinator of a challenging urban reforestation programme; The Citadelle Native Re-vegetation Project – implemented by the NGO Friends of the Environment. This involves many aspects of restoration fieldwork including supervision and coordination of weeding and planting activities, monitoring restoration indicators and organising collected data. Erwin said of his work with Durrell “From Durrell’s CEPF regional building capacity training, I have developed a multitude of skills and strong networking that DESMAN will underpin to be a proactive conservation leader in the Indian Ocean region. The maturity, interdisciplinary knowledge, experiences and research skills gained from this course will also help to address the challenges my project is facing; by among other things, training fresh graduates and developing a programme that will inform, inspire, and empower people to support and help popularise conservation sciences in the region.”
Lilly Rakotomalala Part-time teacher assistant, Department of Entomology, University of Antananarivo, Antananarivo, Madagascar As a current leader of the Association Regrouping Entomologists of Madagascar (ARGEMA), Lilly has written a project with the Department of Biology- Ecology Vegetal of the Faculty of Sciences to help local people in the new protected area of Ambohidray in Madagascar to get more involved in the protection of this area and to reduce pressure on it. As a part-time research assistant, she assisted researchers and conservationists during their field work (research, raising awareness and social project related to conservation project). Lilly tells us, “I hope this course will provide me with a complete toolbox that will help me to design and to run conservation projects in the new protected area where the association I am leading is working. I also hope that the experiences I will get from this course will give me the capacity to get involved in diverse conservation projects in my country.”

In the last two years he has carried out research and applied conservation in the Black Lion Tamarin Conservation Program in Brazil’s threatened Atlantic Forest, in addition to being involved in the elaboration of one of the largest biodiversity databases of the Neotropics and Atlantic Forest of South America, the ATLANTIC SERIES and NEOTROPICAL SERIES. Leo had this to say, “I hope that DESMAN 2019 will be a complementary course in my academic and professional training on biodiversity research, conservation biology and applied conservation and that the course can provide me with tools to apply to the projects I am involved in, such as Metapopulation Management of the Black Lion Tamarins and Insular Management of the Black-faced Lion Tamarin.”
Loveline Ebammi Ehawe Legal Adviser, LAGA (The Last Great Ape Organisation Cameroon), Yaounde, Cameroon As legal adviser in LAGA (an organization specialized in the application of wildlife laws in Africa and especially in Cameroon), Loveline’s job is to enforce the laws in the fight against illegal poaching and wildlife trafficking of endangered species. Loveline has come to Jersey to increase her knowledge of species conservation, to complement her existing legal expertise. Mukhlisin Abdullah Sumatran Orangutan Reintroduction Jantho Station Manager, Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL) - Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), Indonesia With a degree in teaching biology, Mukhlisin engaged in surveys of wild elephant densities for Sumatran Elephant Foundation (Yagasu) and WWF. Between 2008- 2010 he worked for Flora and Fauna International as a field officer, focusing on surveys and monitoring the Ulu Masen Ecosystem, and later as deputy head of one of FFI's Conservation Response Units. Since 2011, he has been Manager of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme's (SOCP) Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Centre where to date they have reintroduced 108 orangutans to the wild. Mukhlisin says, “I grew up in an area with incredible wildlife, species such as elephant, rhino, tiger and orangutan. Needless to say it is also an area with many wildlife problems too, especially revolving around conflict with humans, habitat loss and the wildlife trade. Given my experiences, however, I will continue to learn and do whatever I can to help conserve my region's incredible forests and biodiversity.” Durrell has trained a number of staff from SOCP, an organisation co-founded by a former member of Durrell’s staff.
Pedro Lima Biologist, Reserva do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil During his undergraduate degree, Pedro had experience working in a lab environment studying genetics of flowering plants and insect taxonomy, as well as, some experience working in the field of plant ecology and carbon storage estimation. He currently works at a natural reserve in the southeast of Brazil in the Atlantic forest, in which different projects with local endangered species are being developed. He feels this course is a great opportunity for him to gather the knowledge and experience necessary to better execute these projects, training people, improving captivity skills and knowledge. He says “This is a great chance to help us to save the two remaining Muriqui monkeys (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) living in an area inside the reserve (Reserva do Ibitipoca). After Dominic’s visit we thought this would be suitable for enhancing the relationship between Durrell and Reserva do Ibitipoca.”
Ricardo Rodríguez Veterinarian and Co-Director, Department of Invasive Species, Ciencia y Comunidad por la Conservación, Mexico City, Mexico Ricardo has worked as a consultant in the Alien Invasive Species (AIE) issue, taking part in projects which involve prevention, monitoring and control; this experience gave him a chance to work at different levels of the problem, working with users of AIE (communities, producers and society) and governmental organisations. Through his NGO he works on a number of conservation projects, particularly focusing on some of Mexico’s offshore islands which are home to several highly threatened species. Ricardo shares with us, “Nowadays I’m co-director of an NGO which
looks for the protection and preservation of the environment by promoting the participation of communities on the conservation of their natural resources, working in all Mexico.”
Roberto Cesar Forest Restoration Assistant (Grande Montagne Nature Reserve, Rodrigues), Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, Mauritius In 2008 Roberto began helping the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) as a volunteer. Since then he has worked in the Grande Montagne Nature Reserve as a Restoration Labourer; progressing to Round Island Warden Assistant in 2012. He became Forest Restoration Assistant in 2013 which involved nursery work and also included Field work including bat counts, as well as delivering talks on conservation and being an Education tour guide. During 2016 and 2017, Roberto was a Conservation Biologist on the Island Restoration Program Team, assisting in bird and tortoise surveys and translocation. Since 2018 he has been a Forest Restoration Assistant: responsible, amongst many other things, for tortoise care and monitoring in Grande Montagne Nature Reserve. He says, “I hope the DESMAN course will reinforce my capacity in conservation; data/database management; and modern conservation techniques, while sharing my own experience with other participants.” Durrell works closely with MWF in Mauritius, and has trained many MWF staff over the years since Gerald Durrell established MWF in 1984.
Said Harryba Conservation Ranger, Island Conservation Society, Seychelles Since Said finished Seychelles Maritime Academy, he has been working for the Island Conservation Society on Desroches Island and Silhouette Island as a Conservation Ranger. “I have extensive experience conducting research on coral reef, giant tortoises and sea-turtles,” shared Said. He continued “I am confident I can successfully complete this training as a way for me to develop my knowledge in conservation and boost my career. The course offered by Durrell Conservation Academy will allow me to gain in depth understanding of research techniques and provide me necessary new skills such as networking and conservation planning. The Island Conservation Society encourages staff personal development and wishes to help me achieve my aspiration in the field of conservation.”
Saphira Hunt Programme Assistant, Conservation Department, Saint Lucia National Trust, Saint Lucia “Over the 5 years I've been employed with the Saint Lucia National Trust (SLNT) in the Conservation Department I've been tasked with the conservation of the offshore islands (among other things) as a natural habitat for our endemic reptiles; mainly the Saint Lucia Racer and the Saint Lucia Whiptail Lizard,” Saphira said; she has been working out in the field conducting Biosecurity protocols which were developed for offshore islands to ensure these islands remain invasive free. Sedera Ramaromanana Park Manager (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew), Itremo Massif Protected Area, Madagascar Sedera manages the 250km2 Itremo Massif Protected Area in Madagascar on behalf of Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and in collaboration with local communities. The focus in managing the site has been on building the trust and capacity of the local communities and on managing fire at a landscape level to maintain grassland diversity and reduce forest degradation. They now aim to build into the programme, monitoring and conservation management of ecosystems, so animals as well as plants, and other natural capital metrics (Itremo is a huge watershed for the dry regions to the west). Sedera received his Masters in Plant Biology and Ecology from the University of Antananarivo before eventually becoming an intern and consultant with many NGOs in Madagascar in 2013. After this he was accepted as Manager of Itremo Protected Area. “I'm currently searching many ways to effectively monitor and manage the biodiversity of the site with the staff and local communities,” Sedera continued, “As well as the plants, this includes threatened animals, such as the 3 species of lemur, 8 species of chameleon and at least one threatened frog (more animal surveys and IUCN assessments are needed). I have already trained with Durrell through the CEPF Indian Ocean course, and DESMAN will further improve my skills.”

Tahina Rajaobelison Volunteer Conservationist, Antananarivo, Madagascar After achieving his Masters Degree in Geography at the University of Antananarivo, with a research paper related to carbon footprint assessment, Tahina volunteered for WWF International within the program EXPLORE. He worked in the NMC Landscape, located in the north-western part of Madagascar, where he took part in conservation projects such as ecological health monitoring, training and capacity building of local community, tree nursery and other conservation projects, both marine and terrestrial. Tahina has also been the Landscape Manager of Loky-Manambato with a local NGO named ‘Fanamby’. Loky Manambato is both a marine and terrestrial area that covers over 250000 ha. It is a protected area located in the north-eastern part of Madagascar. Tahina said “From these experiences, I have learned a lot and have now decided to develop an ecological network named “GreeNetwork” which will be operating in capacity building, raising awareness, and environmental education among the least administrative subset of Madagascar, the Fokontany. This network has the goal to promote biodiversity conservation through the empowerment of the local community, in order to reduce anthropogenic pressure.” Thank you to Dr Tim Wright, Durrell and the students of DESMAN 2019…we at the Jerseylife wish you well in your studies and continued efforts in the preservation and conservation of this amazing world.

WEDDING LIFE
OCCASION The Spring and Summer Wedding Season will soon be upon us and many of you have your ‘save the date’ or invitations already. It is never too early to start thinking about what you will wear even if the occasion is several months away. Right now the shops are receiving their new collections and a good tip is to start browsing the rails to get a feel for colours and styles that catch your eye. Too often we think we have so much time and then suddenly the wedding is a week away we haven’t got an outfit, we then start to panic and end up buying something that we are not really happy with but has ‘to do’. So, what to wear? Generally there are no hard and fast rules for guests at a wedding, however as a compliment to the Bride and Groom it should be the one special occasion where you really dress up and look the very best you can. Yes we know it can be an expense but all the more reason to choose something that you can wear again and again and becomes a firm favourite in your wardrobe, there is nothing more expensive than a mistake, so give yourself time. Spring 2019 is a season for dresses, they could be straight and elegant, or calf length with pleats or soft and floating gently to the ankle. Prints are popular, florals or geometrics in every colour from pastel blush pinks, soft blues and neutrals to
stronger tones of royal, fuchsia, emerald and gold. We have seen dresses in moss crepe in stunning jewel colours with touches of detail that are both chic and timeless and these can be worn with a stunning headpiece to create a fabulous look. Trousers are quite acceptable however the overall look should still be ‘special occasion’. Which brings us to another point, something on your head or not? Certainly unless the wedding is very informal the Mother of the Bride and Groom will look more ‘complete’ if they finish their outfit off with a headpiece. And for the guests, why not? Look fabulous and feel wonderful! “So many ladies think they don’t suit a hat, however, the choice in millinery is now the best it has been for many years and there really is something for everyone,” was the reply from Vivien at Up and Above when we asked her. “With the invention of the ‘hat on a band’, styles are now so varied in both size and style that everyone can find something they are truly happy with. It could be wide and sweeping, small and chic, upright and cheeky, or subtle and elegant. This is the one time to dress up and celebrate looking your very best and absolutely enjoying what is the most special day in anyone’s life”.

WEDDING LIFE
BUDGET for the
Let’s look at the all important topic of your wedding budget... Lots of couples have concerns in this area and it’s understandable: weddings cost a lot, whatever we consider ‘a lot’ to be. I’m a great believer that your wedding is the beginning of something, not the end of a project which leaves you exhausted and penniless. For this reason, setting your budget is key. Truly aiming to stick within it can be fun and a challenge, especially if you get a team together. When setting your budget, ensure you include any contributions from family members, Godparents, friends etc. Regardless of how much you’re spending on your wedding, albeit I have planned some high budget affairs, I have yet to manage a wedding where there hasn’t been an element of DIY or employment of guests’ talents. This is particularly useful when counting the pennies. If your friend is a make up artist or hair designer and offers to ‘do the bridal party’ as your wedding gift, if you like their work, why not? If your cousin has a fabulous car, would he spruce it up and put ribbon on it to drive you to your ceremony?
• Remove 5% of the total and treat that amount as your overall budget The first point keeps you focused on what is truly important to the two of you – not the world at large. The second is your contingency. I have never, not once, seen a client’s budget come down. Stay the same, yes. Go up, many times. Recent research by Bridebook.co.uk shows 40% of wedding budgets went up last year, whereas only 4% came down. Use a spreadsheet to list each part of your budget. I like to have three columns which I call Estimated, Actual and Difference. I still get excited when the percentage difference between the first two is tiny. Yes, perhaps I need to get out more! Having a budget spreadsheet keeps you on track and acts as a reminder of the amount you originally allocated to each item. It’ll change, but you can quickly see overspends and re-allocate or decide against certain elements as you move forward. A word about working with contributors…
People love to be asked and want to be involved in their loved ones’ weddings.
For some, if they have contributed, they feel they want a say in everything – guest list, food, transport, cake and the list goes on.
Practical contributions like this allow you to hang onto your hard earned cash and might allow you to book the entertainment you really want, or invite a few more guests.
My advice, for both your sake and your contributors’, is to allocate each contribution to something specific: band, stationery, transport, for example.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER ON A BUDGET ARE: • Guest list rules - think children, plus ones, ‘long lost cousins’, etc. Make sensible rules around who you will and won’t invite and stick to them. • What you really don’t need or want – you don’t have to have everything you’ve seen in the blogs and the magazines, or the same as your sister had, unless that’s your wish • Marry mid week can sometimes bring the price down • Don’t feed people twice - marry later and eat at a normal dinner time • Have simple, tasty, fun food if you cannot afford a 3 course, sit down affair • Use your cake as part of dessert
If the person wishes to be involved, they can pay, for example, for the band. Ask them to research bands to your taste and budget. This works well: they are involved and helping out but you don’t need every contributor around for the tiniest planning decision.
ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR TOTAL BUDGET: • List the three most important things for you as a couple for your day – food/ wines/ great music/ designer shoes – whatever it may be
26 | www.life-mags.com
Enjoy managing your budget – it’s a great way of learning to work together on financials and sticking to it is a huge achievement. Finally, don’t keep comparing your wedding with those of others. Have the day you two truly want and spend your money wisely. Happy Planning! Want ongoing free planning advice? Join my Facebook Group ‘The Emboldened Bride’. www.ternevents.com sandy@ternevents.com

Beautiful Brides, wearing Beautiful Rings
...
by Juanita Shield-Laignel
From the very moment a couple decide to make the commitment of marriage, there is an absolute endless list of things to do. Often it starts with the buying of rings. Luckily we have some amazing local jewellers interlaced into the fabric of our town, most with many years of experience and who will be more than willing to help. Don’t forget they can also help with gifts for the wedding party. Bridesmaids always love little packages tied neatly with a satin ribbon and containing little diamond delights and what about a gorgeous high-end watch for the best man! Then it’s time to send out those invitations and somewhere along the line, table placements, napkins and all sorts of other emblazoned paraphernalia are required. It’s important to purchase the right printed or embroidered material, to set the tone for your big day. Long gone are the days when a venue choice was limited to the Parish Church or the Registry office. With its award winning

golden beaches, an abundance of well-appointed hotels, Jersey is such a bountiful and beautiful place to get married. Weddings can be held almost anywhere the happy couple desire, including their own garden. Erecting a Marquee for the reception is a very popular choice. Marrying during the summer months is extremely popular for obvious reasons but one still has to take into consideration the possibility of inclement weather, even in the height of summer. Dancing through muddy fields, clad in wellingtons and wedding garb is not a particularly good look, so a Marquee helps cater for every eventuality ensuring your special day runs smoothly. And then there’s the question of transport. Should it be horse and cart or classic car or vintage coach? There are many options and hiring a beautiful wedding car is one of them. And not forgetting taking care of your guest’s needs there is always well-established local coach service companies that have a reputation for reliability.

Then there are the flowers. Button holes for the gentlemen, big blousy bouquets or modest bunches of wild flowers for the Bride and her Maids and also importantly, table and room decorations; it’s an absolute horticultural minefield! Again life is made so much easier with the expertise of our local florists. Mother-in–laws, Champagne, discos, photographs, canapés, menus, nut allergies, vegetarians and on it goes. And then there are the superstitions to think of such as not seeing the bride the night before, something new, borrowed and blue, to name a few. No wonder some people just slip away quietly and get married elsewhere or elope and return having done the deed. Others prefer to fly to sunnier climes or participate in extreme sports and troth themselves whilst dangling over a cliff on a rope or some such dare devil escapade. If living on the wild side is your thing but closer to home is preferred, there are plenty of options for the extraordinary dotted around our nature imbued Island. With all this frenetic activity it’s not unusual for brides to be, to drop a dress size or two. As a result, off the peg or handmade, that perfect dress is bound to require alterations. The bride has to stand still as a statue waiting for the seamstress to finish pinning the hem or adjusting the bodice. Thousands of pounds later the blushing bride emerges in the dress of her dreams; not that everybody gets married in the traditional long white

dress anymore but whatever your dream dress, local boutiques and seamstresses are bound to be able to look after you. Of course the bride will want to look her personal best for the day and for the Honeymoon so seemingly endless sessions of waxing, plucking, self-tanning, hair-straightening and nail polishing are all required and if something a little more permanent is need there is always Botox! Luckily, we here on the island of Jersey, not only have the most beautiful venues imaginable to choose from, but also have a whole host of help on hand. Florists, Caterers, Coach Drivers, Dress Makers and if you would rather not have to worry about anything at all; there are a good selection of local Wedding Planners, all keen to make your day run smoothly. A definition of marriage is ‘it’s a method for two people who love each other, to make their relationship official, public and permanent, a joining in a bond.’ On your wedding day, months, maybe even years, of organising, culminate in a very special occasion that you have chosen to share with your friends and family. Your wedding day signifies the beginning of the rest of your lives together as a couple and as such needs to be treated with great deference, so make the most of the wonderful expertise at your fingertips and then sit back, relax and enjoy! Good Luck!

make your
In our day-dreams, the romantic proposal of marriage is effortlessly followed by a Cinderella-style wedding day, and the planning process is carefully edited out as Sarah O’Meara discovers
As lovely as these fantasies are, they’re hardly a blueprint for organising the big day. Whether you’re planning a modest yet elegant affair or a week’s worth of wild hedonism, every dream wedding needs a strong plan to transform it from an idea into reality. Don’t panic, just make sure you’re asking the right questions at the right time. There’s no point in worrying about the details of the day until you’ve made five key decisions. Your big five are... how, where, when, who and budget. Do you want a religious or civil ceremony, in which geographic location, at what time of year, who will you invite and how much can you spend? The Big Five are your road map and until they’ve been agreed upon you can’t get down to the details. Follow these tips to make sure your wedding day is a success...
JUST GOT ENGAGED At this stage you could be three years or three months away and should be fizzing with excitement about the big day. Announcing your engagement is an incredibly special moment for a newly-engaged couple, so it’s important to enjoy the moment, while treating the occasion with care.
Think carefully about who needs to know. If you’ve got children from a past relationship, or relatives you rarely see, you don’t want them to find out in the wrong way. The etiquette is, ‘They should hear it from you’. Then work on your Big Five. When do you want your ideal wedding to be? Bear in mind that off-season weddings in January and February can be more affordable. The ‘Just Got Engaged’ period is also for thinking about the tone and style of your wedding and you may want to start a mood board. This will get you on the right road and mean everything starts to fall into place. Cut out pictures from magazines, from the internet and stick them on a piece of card. As you stick pictures in, you’ll see themes appear. It’s very helpful for key suppliers. Take it with you, and that’ll inspire the people you’re hiring. It’s like furniture shopping. This is definitely the time to go and look at a variety of wedding venues for inspiration, to try on dresses on a whim and have fun looking at different ideas. But also remember that if you’ve decided to have a religious ceremony, your church ideally shouldn’t be more than 30 minutes from the venue. continues overleaf...

WEDDING LIFE
TWELVE TO NINE MONTHS TO GO Having enjoyed the luxury of travelling to venues, perhaps trying on a few gowns and looking at pretty pictures in magazines, now’s the time to firm up those plans. Imagine that this phase is called ‘Ideas and Decisions’ and that now you’ve got a sense of the key elements which will define the look and style of day, it’s important to hire suppliers who can make sure those are all in place. You don’t yet know exactly what they have to do but decide what florist you want to use.
DON’T FORGET: • Set the date, book the ceremony and venue(s) • Book key suppliers (catering, florist, photography, transport, stationer) • Compile guest list • Book entertainment (band, DJ etc.) • Reserve suits, purchase bridesmaids’ outfits and select wedding gown • Send out ‘Save the Date’ cards/email
NINE TO THREE MONTHS Having sketched the outline of your wedding and hired the key players, it’s now the fun part - filling in the details of the day and designing your perfect wedding! Think about what it’s going to look like -and if you’re not sure, get help. It’s important for all the elements to be co-ordinated, otherwise you’ll end up with something random, like a cake that doesn’t work with the venue. You need a design overview. Imagine that you’ve renovated your house and now you’re dressing it with delightful ornaments, curtains and pictures which reflect your own fabulous taste.
DON’T FORGET: • Menu tasting • Choose cake, flowers, readings and music • Purchase wedding ring(s) • Register for gift list • Choose stationer and agree invitations • Book honeymoon
THREE TO ONE MONTHS TO GO At this point, you’ll hopefully be tying everything together, confirming all your plans and adding those final details. For those who feel that there’s simply too much left to do, or are worried about being stressed on the day, you might consider bringing someone in to bring it all together. Planning a wedding isn’t hard - but there is a lot to do. Our wedding day schedules are 30 pages long and every 15 minutes is accounted for.
34 | www.life-mags.com
DON’T FORGET: • Confirm menu • Mail invitations 12 to 8 weeks before wedding • Confirm order of service with officiant • One month to go, chase outstanding RSVPs
TEN DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING If you’ve done it right, there shouldn’t be much left to do - apart from keep staying rested, and going on that last minute diet. A key point to remember is that if everyone involved has the same expectations of the day, then the day should run smoothly. If you’ve talked through the Big Five at the beginning, then any last minute controversies should be avoided. Listen to suggestions from friends and family throughout the process. Some people just want to be heard and by hearing them out, you know they’ll be supportive on the day - even if you’ve ignored what they said!.
DON’T FORGET: • Confirm final guest numbers with venue and caterer • Collect Orders of Service, menu and place cards if necessary • Prepare ‘Wedding Day Schedule’ and distribute as required • Confirm shot list with photographer

But you still might have to kiss a whole bunch of frogs first and wriggle your way into gown after gown until you find your perfect match. Sometimes even hardened anti-meringue brides may be swayed once they first step into a flowing voluminous dress, and similarly those seeking gigantic trains can fall head-over-heels with a sleek fishtail frock. The big day might be all about you and your husband-to-be but the stylish search for your dress is a love affair you’ll never forget. Traditionalist, modernist or bling-fiend bride, your gorgeous gown awaits...
MRS TRADITIONALIST If you’ve always dreamed of the big white princess wedding, now is your chance to wow your very own Prince Charming with a modern-day fairytale gown. Think tumbling cascades of tulle, beaded bodice and never-ending train. Styling tip: Floral corsages, oversized bows or crystal sparkle, make sure any extravagant detailing is focused on your best feature.
MRS MODERN Those seeking something different to avoid being a cookie-cutter bride don’t have to opt for a daring black gown a la Sarah Jessica Parker to stand out. Opt for clean lines, simple shapes, and futuristic detailing for a cutting-edge look to echo the catwalks. Quirky detailing and embroidery can also make you stand out from the traditional bridal brigade. continues overleaf...

WEDDING LIFE
In the sea of white dresses there is definitely a yearning for individuality. Embroidery lends itself to this perfectly, from personal embellishments, the name of your betrothed embroidered on the dress, through to an alternative to a veil, it’s all about the detail. Styling tip: Body-hugging sleek dress? Invest in comfortable but silhouette-enhancing underwear to flaunt your figure to the max.
MRS MAGPIE Your big day focus doesn’t have to be all about the dress. If you’re a self-confessed accessories addict, keep your gown pared-down and sparkle with jewels, pearls and diamonds. Splash out on statement shoes, jewellery or a head piece to make a decadent impact. If the dress is very ornate, you need a simple style of accessory, but if you’re wearing a sleeker style, go to town with more elaborate jewellery. It’s important not to over-complicate the look. Either wear earrings and a bracelet, or a necklace - if you have too much going on you lose the effect. Styling tip: Long chandelier earrings will really set off an asymmetric neckline. 38 | www.life-mags.com
Bridal Beauty By Penny Downes Pennyfeathers, St Clements Being a bride in 2019 means there are no rules anymore. Make up has been liberated and the old fashion rule book ripped up and thrown out of the wedding car window. So are you a blushing bride or a bronzed beauty? Will your Gorgeous luminous complexions will be blinding us this year? By luminous I don’t mean the “ye cheekbone highlight of olde”, but a gorgeous, all-over glow. Go shimmery all the way from the moisturiser and primer to the choice of translucent powder. Skin should sparkle just as much as the engagement ring. Exchange your matte foundation for one with a dewy, caught in the rain finish and you’re well on your way to nailing the trend. Consider Strobing, it’s not a new technique, but choosing an ethereal silver highlighter will enhance the skin’s natural glow. For those who love no-make-up make-up, this moisture laden, light-reflecting look brings a gorgeous sheen to the skin and effortless glam. Choose an intense rose flushed cheek to create a romantic, soft and timeless look. A cream blush suits bridal make up better, it’s even gives you chance to match your blush to your lips or eyes. The Brow has become the single most important step in our make-up routine. This years brow wedding trend is all about bold, full, brushed and flattering yet statement brow, one that can be seen but is actually subtle. So I know that sounds a a contrary statement but it’s the trend. Buzz word of the brow: microblading. Consider leaving eyebrows to the professionals to ensure that your brows will be on-fleek for the nuptials (and straight through the honeymoon) without even lifting a finger. Wedding day brows should be a slightly darker shade than you’d wear in day to day life, so that they look polished in photos. Ditch a brow that’s harsh and square shaped at the beginning, go for a softened rounded look that’s smooth and flowing. I’d always recommend you fine your personal eyebrow nirvana. Start testing out products a few months before to avoid a horrid mistake. For eye make up think depth of colour, whether as a sheer layer for the natural bride or a double dose for the slightly more adventurous. We now see Bronze as the new black if you still want sultry shadow. Choose subtle copper and bronzes as they are easy, forgiving and wearable for all. An eyelid wants to be indulged in glitz and pure decadence. So choosing Iridescence hues and glimmer shades are having their moment in bridal beauty. An up and coming trend this season across all social media is one that dons soft, delicate pinks with a hint of shimmer. This trendy option is perfect for those who want to look natural, but with a little bit of “jush”. One thing’s for sure: eyelashes are a must. Whether you choose a full set of strip false lashes, individual clusters or eyelash extensions these are now a necessity to help open and lift the eyes. Team it with a Brigitte Bardot-esque flirty winged liner for the ultimate eye. A bridal perfect pout is no longer limited to just the nudes. A lip colour you choose to wear on your special day should reflect your personality, as well as compliment your style and day. Go bold or go nude it’s up to you. Finishing with a glossy finish over satin and matte lip colour will be high up on 2019’s most-wanted list. Make sure you pack all your lip colours to ensure your lips are picture perfect throughout the day. www.penny-feathers.co.uk
WEDDING LIFE
The Man Well, it’s finally happened - you’ve been asked to be a best man! So, what does being a best man involve? What are your responsibilities and what about the speech? This article will answer these and other questions about being a best man. Historically, a bridegroom’s best man was chosen for being strong and a good fighter who assisted his friend when he captured his bride. A best man’s support was also needed on the wedding day to protect the bride from any rival who might try to carry her away for his own. When the practice of capturing brides ceased, the best man’s role of supporting the groom and protecting the bride altered to the best man becoming exclusively the groom’s escort while the bride was supported by her bridesmaids. Today, the role of best man (or best woman) is offered to the groom’s closest adult relative or friend but is not one that should be accepted lightly. You will be a main player not only on the day itself, but your advice and practical help will be sought in the preparations beforehand. Your tasks are many and varied but essentially during the run up to the wedding you will be relied upon as a supporter and organiser.
THE BEST MAN’S DUTIES Before The Wedding It is important at the outset of being asked to be a best man to establish from the groom the level of input he would like you to have. Some grooms require as much help as you are able to offer, while others are happy for you to have a minimum amount of input during the pre wedding period but require your help and support on the wedding day alone. Listed below are the traditional responsibilities of a best man: Become involved in discussions and decisions in the planning stage with the groom, acting as a sounding board for his ideas. Help the groom choose the ushers, who are usually picked from both the bride and groom’s families and friends. You need to make sure the ushers are aware of their responsibilities (see over), attend fittings of outfits and ensure they are available to attend the rehearsal (if required).

Together with the groom, decide on the outfits for both yourselves, and the ushers (if the outfits are hired the cost is usually the responsibility of the groom if his finances permit). Arrange the stag night - at least a few days before the wedding to give everyone a chance to recover. Attend the wedding rehearsal and check car-parking facilities and access, particularly if there will be disabled guests. On the day
groom’s father and the bride’s mother. You will escort the chief bridesmaid on your left arm.
A best man’s role on the wedding day is of the utmost importance. The groom will no doubt be very nervous and the calming support of his escort is vital.
Upon arrival at the reception venue, your duties are as follows but some will depend upon whether you have agreed to take on the role of toastmaster.
Here are your other duties:
Collect any greetings messages from the bride’s father and check to see if any messages have been delivered direct to the reception venue.
Meet the groom at least a couple of hours before you need to leave for the ceremony venue. Help the groom dress and ensure he looks his best.
When everyone is seated and before the meal/buffet is served, call for silence and either invite the minister to say grace or, if one is not present, say it yourself.
Make sure you have the ring(s) and take possession of the money for the church fees.
When the meal is finished, introduce the speeches inviting the bride’s father to speak first.
Transport the groom to the ceremony venue making sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before the ceremony is due to begin. A telephone call to the bride’s father telling him that you are leaving will provide welcomed comfort!
After the bride’s father has delivered his speech and toasted the bride and groom, introduce the groom for his much awaited words!
Pay the church fees, on behalf of the groom. Take your seat with the groom on the front right-hand pew while waiting for the bride. Shortly before the bride arrives, you will be prompted to stand in position at the head of the aisle (standing to the groom’s right). Hand over the ring(s) at the required moment. Accompany the chief bridesmaid (or matron of honour) to the vestry for the signing of the register. You may also be asked by the groom to sign the register as a witness. Join the recessional down the aisle following in line after the bride and groom, the bride’s father and groom’s mother and the
The groom’s speech ends with a toast to the bridesmaids. You will reply to this toast on behalf of the bridesmaids and deliver your speech, read the congratulatory messages from absent family and friends, and close by toasting the bride and groom. Once the speeches have concluded, you will announce the traditional cutting of the cake ceremony.

7 SIMPLE STEPS FOR CREATING A STYLISH - AND PRODUCTIVE -
Work Space at Home A work station that suits your taste and needs will surely help bolster motivation and focus. Time to show who's boss, says Gabrielle Fagan... Working from home can be the ultimate dream ticket - no more commuting or having to dress formally, or worry about office politics - and even better, you get to escape all that dreary corporate decor. "Cutting down on wasteful travelling time, enabling you to spend more time with the family, is just some of the many benefits to home-working, and it can be particularly beneficial from a health and wellbeing perspective," enthuses Susan White, marketing director at blinds and curtains specialists, Hillarys. If you're set to join the millions who work from home, look on it as the perfect chance to tailor a space to suit your taste and needs. We've done the homework for you and devised seven simple but stylish steps, so you can make light work of creating the perfect home office... 44 | www.life-mags.com
1. MAKE IT PERSONAL At home, you're the boss, and you can truly indulge your taste and have the freedom to express your personality in the decoration of your 'office'. In an open-plan space, zone an area with a stunning wall mural, or cork tile an expanse of wall so you can pin up inspiring photos or to-do lists.
Alternatively, paint a wall with black chalkboard paint, to transform it into a wipeable surface for scribbling ideas, plans, or simply expressing yourself. TIP: If you fancy it, don't be afraid to incorporate pattern and colour into your office scheme. Research has found that both can actually help keep you creative and stimulated at work. For a perfect balance, keep energetic colours in your periphery, while sticking to a more subdued look for the desk.
2. PRETTY UP WITH PINK If you're after a softer scheme, reduce the risk of workplace stress by choosing a calming colour for a work area. Pink is reputedly a positive colour, inspiring warm, comforting feelings and imparting a sense that everything will be all right - and who doesn't like the sound of that?
3: KILL THE CLUTTER Keeping a tidy office is crucial to staying on top of things. Organising and filing loose papers means you'll spend less time searching for them - coping with clutter is a big time-waster. Filing cabinets, desks with compartments, and accessible floating shelves for file boxes are a good investment. Don't let a notice board be all to-do lists and bills though, or you won't ever want to look at it. continues overleaf...

TIP: Keep everyday essentials close to hand, so there'll be less temptation to get up and wander. If you know you'll need frequent caffeine top-ups, you could even keep a little coffee-maker or kettle near the desk, and a mini-fridge stocked with cold drinks.
and colourful storage pots, so you can enjoy the comforts of home all through the working hours. TIP: Setting priorities is important in an office, and even more so when working from home, as doing so will help you stay on track and not get overwhelmed. Without a boss hovering or work-mates to bounce ideas off, it's up to you to put your to-do list in order. Use technology to help, with mobile reminders and alerts.
4. CARVE OUT A CREATIVE CORNER "Not everyone has an entire room, or even an entire wall, to dedicate to an office. But that doesn't mean you can't carve out a space somewhere in your home, be it a landing, bedroom or corner of a living room, to let your creative juices flow," says White. "Whatever you use your home office for - computer work, home and life admin, or crafts and projects - an effective work area demands plenty of light. Equally, you don't want glare on your screen, so choose your window dressings wisely.
6. SHOW WHO'S BOSS A shade of dark green, paired with black furniture and office accessories, gives decor a strong visual impact and, crucially, creates a business-like look for an office. This is especially important if clients are going to visit and you want to convey a professional image. TIP: Never skimp on expense when buying an office chair. After all, you may spend hours sitting on it, and it's vital that it's comfortable and fully adjustable so you avoid muscle strain and back pain. 7. BLACK IS BACK Sleek, black furniture spells executive style, never dates, and you'll win compliments for your chic taste.
"Shutters and Venetian blinds have adjustable louvres and slats, so you can control the amount of light and are also great for privacy and security," adds White. Pop into The Shutter Hut showroom at Unit 1, Doue House, Longueville Road, St Saviour JE2 7SA for an extensive choice or visit www.shutterhut.co.uk. "If you're easily distracted, opt for a sheer roller blind. It'll still let in plenty of light, but you can pull it down to block out distractions from the outside world when you need to focus."
TIP: A properly lit space is crucial to maintaining your mood, productivity and health. Bad lighting can strain eyes, especially if you're staring at a bright screen in the dark. Layer light, so you can have clear
TIP: Set clear ground rules for your work space, such as asking family to knock before coming into your office, or respecting quiet time between certain hours. Make this easy, and visual, for young children by using a traffic light system (a green circle on the door means 'come in'; yellow means 'ask first', and red means 'do not disturb'). 5. DRESS THE DESK One of the best things about working from home is not being in a stuffy, boring office. So why re-create that at home? Instead, include pleasing decorative elements, such as a vase full of flowers

overhead light if necessary, a decorative table lamp with a warm glow when you're thinking rather than focusing, and always have an adjustable desk lamp so that paperwork is properly illuminated.

POPULAR F looring Options The unsung heroes of every room, Luke Rix-Standing runs through the key pros and cons of some of the most popular flooring materials. They may not be the latest 3D-printed armchair or voice-activated speaker system, but your floors are, quite literally, the foundation of your home...
A classic blend of fashion and function, a floor must tie a room together while fulfilling a range of - very important - practical requirements too. While aesthetics are a key consideration, in general, flooring should be relatively unobtrusive. It's the defensive midfielder of home decor: If you don't notice it, it's probably doing a good job.
2. TILE For such a popular flooring choice, tile has a long list of drawbacks: It's relatively difficult to repair if it cracks or gets damaged; the grouting easily accumulates dirt; sock wearers risk slipping; it gets extremely cold in wintertime - and it's not even that cheap.
Different flooring options will suit different parts of the home, so it's vital to think carefully before coming to a decision. You don't want your bathroom floor going soggy from shower spray, or a cold playroom surface punishing your children's knees, for instance.
But a tough, durable surface makes tile pet-friendly, and most flooring shops offer a near-infinite array of colours and patterns from Victorian florals to abstract collage - so in terms of aesthetic appeal and style, the possibilities really are endless and tiles can look truly striking. The bathroom surface of choice for generations of homeowners, being easy to clean, tiling also brushes up nicely in the kitchen and pantry.
Here's a look at 10 of the most common options - what they're good at, and what they're not... 1. WOOD Summarising wood flooring is like summarising a clothing fabric there's a lot of different forms it could take. Oft-neglected softwood floors can work wonders in low-footfall areas, but as the name suggests, they can struggle with the rough and tumble of a busy family home. Most modern wood floors are hardwood highly coveted surfaces that can also add serious value to a property. Relatively pricey, prone to scratching and potentially sensitive to moisture, hardwood flooring is nevertheless popular in living areas for its elegant appearance and underfoot warmth. For a tougher, cheaper alternative, try laminate - fibreboard printed with a high-res image of a wooden finish, which these days can look practically as good as the real thing.

3. CARPET A go-to for rooms with soft furnishings, carpet can be both chic and cosy has refreshingly clear pros and cons. The good: It's warm, insulating, generally cheaper than wood or tile, and can be fashioned into almost any design. The bad: Stains easily, struggles with moisture, traps dust and pet hair, and needs to be replaced when worn down. And while we're at it, the 'ugly': The infamously tasteless carpets at Las Vegas casinos. Do - bedroom and sitting room. Don't - bathroom and kitchen.
5. VINYL The IKEA wardrobe of home flooring, this low-cost option is all the rage among practical homeowners with middling budgets. Approachable prices partner with a performance level that reliably returns more than you paid for. Vinyl looks pretty good (there are lots more design options available now), insulates well, repels water and soaks up high footfall nicely - but it can be prone to fading in sunlight and is easily dented by sharp objects. Vinyl lacks the elegance of hardwood and the comfort of cork or carpet, but it's a functional surface that will serve you well with some tender loving care. 6. CONCRETE Strange though it may seem, this staple of the multi-storey car park is also a creditable option for your front room or kitchen floor. Virtually indestructible, concrete adds a modern, almost postindustrial vibe to the home, and partners well with underfloor heating. But the sturdiness comes at the expense of comfort it's really hard - and even well-finished surfaces can look a little bleak. At least you'll have plenty of excuses to go rug shopping.
4. CORK Cork floors aren't as common a sight as they perhaps once were - but, honestly, we're not sure why. Soft to the touch, naturally insulating against sound and temperature, relatively cheap and eco-friendly, the reddish-brown patterns tally particularly well with hardwood furniture. The drawbacks? Fades in direct sunlight, prone to water damage, and may distort under table legs and other pressure points.
7. RUBBER A little left turn, we'll admit - but this unconventional pick is sure to raise eyebrows, if just from the slight bounce it elicits when stepped on. A highly durable choice, with superb sound insulation. However, rubber can also be more on the expensive side, and difficult to clean. It's commonly used for it's shock-absorbing qualities - think spaces with a high risk of heavy objects being dropped, such as gyms. Rubber is a horse for a course: Perfect for a music room or home gym, and possibly a bold choice for style junkies elsewhere in the house. continues overleaf...

8. STONE Given that most of the world's rocks have looked after themselves just fine for centuries, it should come as no surprise that a stone floor is supremely hard-wearing and low-maintenance. Literally hewn from the ground, stone tiles are eco-friendly and ideal for high footfall areas like hallways.
9. MARBLE If your domestic vision involves grand banisters, neo-classical columns and high-end toga parties, then marble is a go-to (we jest - it's an all-round stunning material). But there are cons too... It can chip, costs the earth, and can be dangerously slippy under slippers or socks.
On the flip-side, imperfections may result in a surface that's uneven - literally and stylistically - while a high-ish price tag puts off some buyers. Stone tiles can also be foot-freezingly cold in winter, and for God's sake don't drop any plates.
Long a linchpin of luxury, a marble floor could well add serious value to a home, but comes with severe cold feet syndrome, and weeks of bruising every time you bump your knee. 10. BAMBOO A relative newcomer to the flooring scene, bamboo has found a growing niche with eco-conscious householders looking to go au naturel. The world's fastest growing plant (technically a species of oversized grass), bamboo is attractively textured, goes well with modern interiors, and is highly sustainable. Bamboo can be fairly expensive though and will need a little more TLC than some of the hardier materials. Lots of appeal, but be sure to do your research before you buy.

GARDENING
8 things gardeners can do to help alleviate the insect crisis As research suggests insects are in dramatic decline, Buglife offers some simple ways we can all do our bit. By Hannah Stephenson... The alarming reports that 40% of insect species could become extinct in a few decades should prompt gardeners to do their bit to help alleviate the ensuing crisis.
"If you get on with your neighbours, try to get them to follow suit and then you'll create a much bigger corridor, which will enable different invertebrates to cross over your area and give them their mobility back."
Without insects, scientists are predicting a "catastrophic collapse of nature's ecosystems". "Gardeners can definitely make a difference," says Paul Hetherington, of invertebrate conservation charity, Buglife. "Even on a balcony, you can provide a service station for bees and other insects to stop by if you plant the right plants. You can provide a little oasis." "Most butterflies and bees are showing a sharp decline," he continues, "so anything you can do for pollinators is going to be useful." Keen to do your bit? Here's a look at what can gardeners do to help insects survive... 1. STOP USING PESTICIDES "Ditch the chemicals," says Hetherington. "Don't spray any chemicals in your gardens. Very few people are dependent on what they grow in their garden to live. It doesn't take long to get an ecological balance in your garden with enough predators to keep the pests under control.

2. USE PLANTS WHICH ARE INSECT MAGNETS Try to stick to native plants or hybrids of them. Buy home-grown plants to help prevent invasive species reaching your garden and our countryside. Wild flowers, such as cow parsley, are a magnet for flying insects, while tall umbels such as Angelica gigas are attractive to hoverflies and wasps, and herbs also have accessible flowers.

Go for single flowers rather than double-flowered varieties, because single flowers are more accessible to pollinating insects. 3. MAKE YOUR GARDEN FLOWER ALL YEAR Nowadays, thanks to milder winters, you often see bees on flowers during the cooler months, so make sure you have a planting scheme which offers flowers all year. Aconites, crocus and snowdrops can start the year off.

Containers and hanging baskets can also be replenished with seasonal flowering plants at different times of the year. Fruit bushes, such as apple trees, will provide spring blossom, single-flowering cherry trees and strawberries all provide much-needed nectar for pollinating insects. 4. GO PEAT-FREE Peatland is an ancient habitat, formed over thousands of years. It forms one of the most important global stores of carbon, but exploitation of this peat to burn for energy and as a growing medium in horticulture damages these peatlands, and releases harmful carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere.

GARDENING
By using peat alternatives in your garden, you can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and slow the impact of climate change on our environment. 5. MAKE DEADWOOD PILES Beetles and other beneficial insects live in deadwood, so make deadwood piles at the bottom of your garden, where they can breed. Stag beetles will nest in log piles. Beetles are beneficial because they eat slugs, so are good pest controllers, particularly rove beetles.
7. DON'T BE TOO TIDY In winter, there's a tendency to cut things down and rake up dead leaves, where overwintering insects may be sheltering. Try to leave an area untidy, where nettles can grow and old wood can be left. If you have the space, make a compost heap. They provide great shelter for insects and you'll often find bumblebees nests there. 8. SHADE YOUR WATER If you have a stream running through your garden, plant trees around it to create some shade. This will help keep the water temperature down. Stoneflies and mayflies are progressively migrating further upstream to colder water for breeding, says Hetherington. In time, this will mean that they only exist in high altitude locations. Gardeners can help to keep the water temperature down by planting shading shrubs and trees. For more information, visit Buglife.org.uk/activities-for-you/wildlife-gardening
6. GIVE INSECTS WATER Install a birdbath, which will provide the right depth of water for invertebrates as well as birds.

RECIPE
Spoil your mum with our recipes for Mother's Day. Whether you're treating mum to breakfast in bed, baking up a sweet treat or cooking a full three-course extravaganza, we've got the recipes you need. BERRYWORLD RASPBERRY AND PISTACHIO TARTS Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes Makes 6 tarts You’ll need: Filling and Topping 225ml whole milk 1 large egg 2 large egg yolks 100g caster sugar 25g cornflour 50g pistachio paste 600g BerryWorld raspberries 25g chopped pistachios Sweet Pastry 200g plain flour 20g ground almonds 40g icing sugar pinch of salt 125g unsalted butter 1 large egg yolk 1 tbsp ice cold water What to do: To make the pistachio filling place the milk into a medium sized saucepan and bring to the boil. Meanwhile place the egg, yolks, sugar, cornflour and pistachio paste into a large bowl and whisk together to combine. When the milk is at temperature pour over the egg yolk mixture and immediately whisk together, to prevent the eggs from curdling. Pour the mixture back into the pan and over medium heat cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture is very thick. Scrape back into the bowl and press a sheet of Clingfilm onto the surface and refrigerate until needed. To make the pastry place the flour, almonds, icing sugar and salt into a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles bread crumbs. Add the egg yolk and the water and pulse until the mixture starts to form a ball (if the mixture is too dry add more water a tsp at a time). Tip the mixture out onto the work surface and use your hands to gently knead together into a uniform dough. Wrap in Clingfilm and refrigerate for an hour before using. (I like to form the pastry into a sausage shape before chilling and cutting into six slices to roll out individually, it’s easier to handle small pieces of pastry and it’s less likely to get warm and sticky) Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured work surface until about 2-3mm thick and cut out 6 rounds of pastry big enough to line 10cm wide tart tins. Use the pastry to line six 10cm loose bottomed tart tins, trimming off any excess. Place the tarts onto a baking tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until the pastry is chilled. Line each tart case with a piece of crumpled baking parchment and fill with baking beans or rice. Bake in an oven preheated to 180C (160C fan) for about 20 minutes then remove the parchment and the beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. To assemble the tarts, fill each tart shell with a layer of the pistachio mixture, top with fresh raspberries and chopped pistachios, dusting with a little icing sugar if you fancy. The tarts are best served on the day they are assembled but the pastry can be made up to a week in advance and the custard up to three days in advance. www.berryworld.com

FASHION
Katie Wright looks to the catwalks for all the fashion leads you need to know about this season It's still way too chilly to cast off our coats and slip into strappy dresses, but it's never too soon to start getting excited about what spring has in store for us fashion-wise. Back in September, the catwalks revealed what high-end designers had in mind for warmer weather - and now the SS19 collections are landing on the high street, so it's time get those wardrobe wish-lists ready. You just know the 'It' shoes and skirts and bags are going to sell out in no time, so if you want to get your hands on the most desirable duds, you're going to have to act fast. Plus you'll need to be in the know about the latest looks from the designer collections - which is where we can help. We've selected the most influential colours, fabrics and styles from the catwalks to help guide your buying decisions, with suggestions on how and where to shop the looks on the high street. Ready to swing into spring? Here are the seven top trends of SS19... 1. BEIGE Think beige equals boring? You won't when you see how Riccardo Tisci used the classic Burberry trench colour for head-to-toe looks at his first show for the iconic brand. He wasn't the only one, either. There were about 50 shades of beige seen at the shows, from Tom Ford and Max Mara's trench-inspired offerings, to Balmain's seductive suede and Dior's dramatic full skirts. 2. MODERN LACE Lace gets a modern makeover this season, thanks to a profusion of the black floral fabric at Erdem, alongside the bold and bright hues at Christopher Kane. Even brands known for their tough, street sensibilities, like Off-White and Alexander Wang, were getting in on the act - there's nothing old-fashioned about these sporty shift dresses and mannish shirts. 3. CRAFT WORK Traditional techniques also got an update for SS19, with crochet, patchwork and macrame coming to the fore at Chloe, Jacquemus and JW Anderson. There was still a natural feel to these loose knits and slinky dresses in creamy hues - we predict they'll be a big hit when summer finally arrives. 4. FRINGING While many of those beautifully crafted catwalk creations came with long, loose tassels, there's also a whole other trend for flippy fringing in hyper bright colours, as seen at Gucci, MGSM and Marc Jacobs.
5. BRIGHT SUITS Suits are sticking around for spring, which will be welcome news for anyone who's worn their grey check blazer to death over winter. Now, however, it's all about zesty brights and saturated shades. Take your cues from the tailored suits and dresses at Balenciaga (scarlet), Peter Pilotto (tangerine) or David Koma (lime green). 6. ACID WASH DENIM Designers doubled down on the Eighties denim trend for spring, with baggy bleached blue jeans on the catwalks at Christian Dior and Alberta Ferretti. It's not all about jeans, however. Acid wash denim skirts and dresses were well received at Balenciaga, Balmain and Isabel Marant. 7. BIKE SHORTS Nope, they're not cycling shorts - you're not actually going to do any pedalling in them - bike shorts are what the fashion world has termed the controversial trend which started on the street and has boomed on the runways for spring. Not just with sporty brands, either. Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Miu Miu - they all sent out models in the clingy, unforgiving shorts. Will this be the season you give in and buy a pair?
While epic flapper-style evening gowns aren't the sort of thing you can wear on the regular in real life, a bright fringed bag is the ideal addition to summer ensembles.

Happy ‘110th’ Birthday Pearce Jewellers At the start of the year our windows are heavily depleted from the Christmas rush. December is such a fun and busy time for us and we sell so many beautiful gifts to so many beautiful people that the shop feels quite bare when we return after our break. January is the time for our annual stock take. It's a task we're pleased to only have to do once a year, though it doesn’t take as long as you might imagine. We’re so practised at it now that we zip around the shop scanning barcodes, which is a great change for us. Long gone are the days of a hand written stock book, but not so long that we aren’t thankful for modern technology! As we ease out of winter the shop feels like it’s coming back to life - spring is in the air and we can tell by the sense of optimism shown by our customers for the coming year. Our buying traditionally starts in February with a major trade fair in the UK, where we have a chance to meet our colleagues in the trade, compare notes about current trends and pick up exciting new products. This is also where we have the chance to hand pick stones. As we are known for selling all types of precious and semi-precious gems, we will buy everything from beautifully cut diamonds to naturally shaped amethyst geodes. We particularly enjoy having the time to discuss product specifications and manufacturing techniques with suppliers as we will always want to be as informed as possible about any product we sell We start filling up our windows again during March and April. Just as buds open and leaves begin to unfurl, our windows stretch and start to come to life with each new piece. Our displays constantly evolve to accommodate the unique pieces which are individually chosen to inspire our customers. Summer starts with a rush of ear piercing as children break up for their school holidays. Last year we broke our record of twenty three pairs of ears pierced in one day and we hope to break it again this year. The season has hit and St Helier is filled with visitors. Our door is always open and the shop is often filled to bursting with tourists looking for an original piece to remind them of their holiday and our local gifts fly out of the shop. Anklets and toe rings are very pretty additions to any beach wear and turquoise and silver pieces look great against sun kissed skin. The nights draw in and our windows start to look like jewels, softly glowing with different coloured glass lamps. Halloween arrives and we hang bats from the shelves and sell pewter covered whisky tumblers for cosy evenings by the fire. Then, before we know it, it’s Christmas again and we’re so wrapped up in helping our customers choose gifts that we don’t notice how busy we are. Another season, another year in a business that is constantly evolving, growing and shaping itself to the needs of our customers old and new.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Mindfulness. The New Method Combating Stress In The Workplace. What is this new concept and how could it help Channel Island Business? Mark Shields explains... These days you cant go very far without hearing the word mindfulness being banded about, its all over the place, In the media, on TV its on every ones lips. Paul Dolan, Professor of Behaviour Sciences, at the London School of Economics believes that to achieve happiness at work we should all focus on having the right balance of focus and purpose in our every working lives. He talks of this in some depth in his best belling book happiness by design. Mindfulness is mentioned a lot. As the Channel Islands is renowned as one of Europe’s leading financial centres, employee stress is likely to be high. 2014 saw employee wellbeing cost the economy 6.5 million GBP It is not hard to miss the headlines that the mental health wellbeing of employees is having a detrimental effect on the productivity, profitability and success of many companies and businesses. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) estimated that the cost to the economy in 2014 was £6.5 Billion. This is based on sickness days lost, estimated at 10.4million days and presenteesism; where employees are at work but are disengaged, tired, unmotivated, unproductive and too stressed to work. WHAT IS CORPORATE WELLNESS? Corporate Wellness, defined as any workplace health promotion activity or organizational policy designed to support healthy
behaviour in the workplace and to improve health outcomes is now becoming entrenched in the minds of many CEO’s, Managing Directors and those responsible for implementing policies and procedures. In fact those guys at Apple, Google, IBM, Virgin, The NHS and Transport for London to name but a few are well along the way with initiatives aimed at improving their employee’s mental wellness at work. CORPORATE WELLNESS INITIATIVES Corporate Wellness initiatives used can include; access to fitness and exercise classes, education seminars aimed at skill improvement, employee incentive programs, nutritional support for instance providing healthy option for drinks and snacks and removing the unhealthier options and most importantly focus on mental health, which I will go into more in a moment. But, I can hear you ask, what is the benefit to me or my company in spending time and money investing in various programs and initiatives to make it ‘nice, fluffy, eating organically’ at work? It is after all a place of employment, a business venture, a corporation, not a holiday camp. Well, consider the impact on your business of staff absenteeism, of conflict and aggression amongst staff, of increased and prolonged pressure on work staff and how this affects productivity and performance. continues overleaf...

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
How this in turn may have a detrimental effect on external customer relationships and service. The mental health aspect of corporate wellness has in recent years been of much interest. With the likes of Apple, Google, IBM and Virgin publicly turning to this new concept called Mindfulness to support their Businesses, will Channel Island Companies do the same? The presence of employee assistance programs, of ‘buddy’ partnerships and manager awareness courses are in increasing in numbers. Banks and Financial Institutions Implement Wellness Programs More recently and in more and more instances the corporate world is embracing the practice of Mindfulness and bringing this practice in to the workplace. Google have mindfulness stations situated around their HQ so that their employees can take time out whenever they feel the need to do so. Yahoo, Deutsche Bank, Procter & Gamble, Apple, Astra Zeneca GlaxoSmithKline, General Mills, the Home Office, the Cabinet Office, KPMG, and PricewaterhouseCoopers have also successfully incorporated Mindfulness practice in to their workplaces. WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? Mindfulness is a focused level of attention and awareness with an emphasis on acceptance; being non-judgemental, non- reactive and noncritical of the thoughts, feelings and sensations we all experience during our day. Mindfulness is about being in the present moment and not allowing the past or the future to affect or influence us. Mindfulness encourages qualities of compassion, kindness and warmth to our experiences. HOW CAN MINDFULNESS HELP? It has been scientifically shown that Mindfulness if practiced on a regular basis will improve mood and quality of life. It can improve memory, increase creativity and reaction times as well as increase and improve mental and physical stamina. Mindfulness has been evidenced in reducing stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, exhaustion and irritability. It has also been shown to have a beneficial effect on coronary, circulatory and immune system health. In the workplace, MINDFULNESS CAN LEAD TO: • Greater well being • Clearer thinking • More effective communication • More creativity and stronger leadership skills • Greater teamwork • Improved ability to address conflict • More awareness of personal stress and how to prevent it • Increased stability during periods of change • The ability to respond rather than react by breaking habitual patterns of behaviour • Fewer somatic illnesses

Due to the demands on us in both our work and private lives, we are all increasingly working on autopilot, that state of mind where we zone out, where our minds are racing from one thought to another, one idea to another, thinking we’re being productive when in fact all we are doing is making ourselves exhausted, and the antithesis of our aim, being unproductive. COMMON EXAMPLES OF WORKING ON AUTOPILOT INCLUDE: • Being Unable to remember what others have said during conversations? • Having no recollection of the daily commute? • Eating at the desk without tasting your food? • Paying more attention to the iPhone / iPad than to the family? • Dwelling on past events or dreading what the future holds? By being aware, by being present and by being focused, it is possible to avoid acting on auto pilot providing all the benefits already outlined. THE IMPACT OF MINDFULNESS IN THE WORKPLACE Results. There has not been a large amount of empirical data about the benefits of Mindfulness in the workplace as it is relatively new practice but on researching this article I did find the following information established by General Mills which shows the effect this practice has had on their business: After a seven-week courses, 83 per cent of participants said they were “taking time each day to optimise their personal productivity” – up from 23 per cent before the course. Eighty-two per cent said they now make time to eliminate tasks with limited productivity value – up from 32 per cent before the course. And among senior executives who took the course, 80 per cent reported a positive change in their ability to make better decisions, while 89 per cent said they became better listeners. Practicing Mindfulness is like exercising, with a use or lose it approach required. The more you use it the better the effect will be. WHAT CAN EMPLOYERS DO? So how can your business stop becoming a statistic? Start incorporating Corporate Wellness in to the workplace. Hire a Mindfulness/Business Coach to teach your managers and staff the benefits of Mindfulness, reduce the stresses of work life and join the Mindfulness revolution. BMW'S I8 ROADSTER By Jack Evans The drop-top version of BMW's instantly recognisable hybrid sports car is now on sale. Jack Evans heads out to Valencia to see what it's like. WHAT IS IT? That's right, it's finally here. After years of teasers, reveals and promises, we're finally behind the wheel of the BMW i8 Roadster. A soft-top version of the iconic hybrid sports car, the Roadster is aimed at those who want the wind in their hair when piloting one of the most futuristic looking vehicles available. It's also able to offer genuinely low running costs and emits next to nothing, but can that help the i8 Roadster to top the bill when it comes to performance drop-tops? Let's find out. WHAT'S NEW? The biggest change here is, of course, the lack of a roof. BMW has whipped off the i8's top and, because of its predominantly carbon-fibre underbody, it hasn't had to laden the car down with additional strengthening.
70 | www.life-mags.com
Facts at a glance Model as tested: BMW i8 Roadster Engine: 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol linked to electric motor Power: 369bhp Torque (Nm): 570Nm Max speed (mph): 155 0-60mph: 4.4 MPG: 141.9 Emissions (g/km): 46
MOTORING
That means the Roadster's weight stays down, and as a result it's just 60kg heavier than its hard-top brethren. The roof mechanism itself is clever too, taking just 15 seconds to raise or lower at speeds of up to 31mph. The exterior of the car has also been lightly breathed upon to freshen its looks, though we'll come to those in more depth later. WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? The i8 Roadster makes use of exactly the same powertrain as the regular i8, so you'll find a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine linked to an electric motor. The combustion engine powers the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor powers the front wheels through a twospeed automatic 'box. BMW has also increased the car's battery cell capacity, so while you still get 369bhp and 570Nm of torque, the Roadster can still travel up to 33 miles on electric power alone. Both units combine to offer the best performance possible, with the electric motor filling in the gaps of the petrol's power delivery. Thanks to this, 0-60mph takes just 4.4 seconds, and it can a top speed of 155mph too. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? Usually when converting a regular hardtop into a convertible, you'd expect a significant penalty to the way the car drives. Lopping the roof off usually requires additional bracing to stop the car from flexing too much, and this adds weight, therefore blunting the vehicle's performance. However, as we mentioned, the i8 Roadster hasn't suffered too much with the conversion, with a negligible amount of weight added.
HOW DOES IT LOOK? The regular i8 still looks like nothing else on the road, despite having been around for some time now. The Roadster, in our eyes at least, looks even better - particularly in the 'E-Copper' colour our test car was finished in. The bubbles behind driver and passenger have been accentuated, giving it the look of a 1950's racer, while the two-tone alloy wheels fitted to our test car stood out too.
This means that it steers just as keenly as the Coupe, and manages the weight it does have impressively well through the corners.
The front of the car has benefited from some additional design touches too. There are revised air ducts finished in gloss black, while the headlight's look has been updated as well. It's still the i8 motoring fans know and love, just turned up a little bit more.
Push the i8 Roadster a little harder and it does fall into understeer, the front tyres scrubbing wide with little effort. We'd also like the brakes to be sharper; currently they feel underpowered and vague, leaving you guessing as to how much pedal force you need apply at any given moment.
WHAT'S IT LIKE INSIDE? The i8 Roadster's interior remains largely unchanged over the Coupes, though it does benefit from the addition of a few new colour and material combinations. It's still a well-made place to be, albeit one that is starting to feel its age a touch now; the screen, though clear, isn't quite as pin-sharp as rival systems while the multifunction steering wheel hasn't got the features you'll find on other current BMWs. The Roadster, does however, have practicality on its side. Though soft-tops are usually the less spacious option, this i8 packs more luggage space than its hard-top stablemate. In fact, you'll find 188 litres of storage space in the Roadster - close to 35 litres more than the Coupe. VERDICT BMW already claims that the Roadster will outsell the Coupe three to one - and we'd we can already see that being the case. There's little reason why you wouldn't go for the soft top; it's quick, great to look at and its roof mechanism is simple and easy to use. The hybrid powertrain keeps running costs to a minimum, yet despite there's a whole lot of performance accessible under your right foot. It's an impressive car alright, and one you'd likely never tire of driving.

WINE
A Holiday Home in Sicily for Just One Euro by Martin Flageul DipWSET, Wine Consultant If you fancy owning a property in Italy’s beautiful island of Sicily – you might still be in luck and pick up a bargain house for just one Euro!
SAMBUCA Sambuca is not just an aniseed flavoured Italian liqueur but also a hilltop town in Sicily. As recently as last December the town’s deputy mayor and tourist office councillor, Giuseppe Cacioppo, announced that dozens of properties in the town were to go on the market for just one Euro. The deal is aimed at reviving the community because in recent years many residents have left Sambuca and moved to larger cities. REFURBISHMENT The properties, as one would imagine, need to be refurbished and the new owners must commit to spending at least €15,000 within three years from the date of purchase and will have to fork out a security deposit of €5,000 straight away which will be returned once the renovation is completed. The houses are two-storey Moorish dwellings and range in size from 40 to 150 square metres. There will need to be a lot of work done as the properties are filled with piles of broken stones and even old furniture. Once refurbished the houses should once again resemble the pink-reddish properties that glow at sunset. They should feature typical Sicilian tiled roofs with terraces overlooking the stunning scenery. VINEYARDS Sambuca was nominated in the “Italy’s Most Beautiful Towns” contest two years ago and that is not surprising. The countryside is dotted with Arab lookout towers and ruins of pagan temples. There is lots to do in the area if you like the outdoor life, trekking routes lead up to the rocky crest of Mount Genuardo and its ancient Greek burial ground of Adranon where mushroom foraging is popular. Sambuca has been making wine since the time of the ancient Greeks and its vineyards stretch all the way to the sea. Sicily’s wine revival started right here and the red wine produced is an excellent example of the Nero d’Avola grape variety. The wine is generally medium to full bodied with rich red and black fruit flavours of cherry, plum and raspberry. Earthy, mineral flavours give Nero d’Avola complexity and often spicy notes complement the fruitiness. TRADITIONAL FOOD What better to serve the local wine with than the many of Sicily’s culinary delights. The local food is really something to look forward to with many typical Sicilian dishes such as busiate, a pasta made from grain grown in Sambuca. Macco di fave is a dried bean soup cooked with garlic, onions, celery and carrots and sometimes served with fennel. Whilst the local grape variety of Nero d’Avola is very abundant, Sicily also grows non-local varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Chardonnay so the local food dishes can be accompanied by a variety of different styles of Sicilian wines. So, what better way to spend a Euro … well several thousand Euros really! With the beach just a few kilometres away and vineyards on your doorstep, an abundance of excellent food and even a view of Mount Etna volcano on a clear day. Already many people have made their purchase in Sambuca so could you be next?

THE JONQUIL BY MARILYN PARKES-SEDDON Hoping to find a way to move on from the sadness that threatens to overwhelm her life, young widow, Betsy Abbot, moves to Alderney to manage a small bistro. There she meets and falls in love with a Guernsey yachtsman, Allain Laubert. The Jonquil of the title is Allain’s yacht, and the story centres on the St Anne Challenge, a biennial yacht race around the island of Alderney. Allain gives Betsy new hope. Her life once again is brightened by love. But for a second time Betsy’s life is devastated by sudden tragedy, followed by complications and misunderstandings. And Allain’s former girlfriend, Francesca, is determined to keep them apart. Available from any good bookshop, your usual book supplier, online, or direct from the publishers.
