Home for Thanksgiving: VMFA(AW)-224 Fighting Bengals return from deployment Story and photos by Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes III Staff Writer

Marines with Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224 returned to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Nov. 21. The squadron was deployed to support combat operations overseas in the Central Command area of operations. The seven-month deployment served as an opportunity for the Marines of the squadron to gain experience from supporting Coalition operations abroad to provide opportunities to become tactically proficient in their job in a forward deployed environment. “I had a really great time on deployment, it’s the first time I got to go somewhere

outside of the United States and experience a different part of the world,” said Cpl. Byron Miranda, a welder with VMFA (AW)-224. “It’s really nice knowing that my work is a part of this great mission but it’s also really nice being able to be home for the holidays and see my family.” Marines of Marine Aircraft Group 31, the families of the deployed Marines and an honor guard comprised of local former veterans bordered the flight line and greeted the Marines as they made their way to the squadron’s hangar. “We wanted to show these Marines that they haven’t been forgotten Photo by Lance Cpl. MWSD-31 supports ITX 1-18 in Twentynine Palms MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif.,--Marine Wing Support Detachment 31, which is based out of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., supported Integrated Training Exercise 1-18 through the reconstruction of three helicopter landing zones at training area Lead Mountain, Nov. 1- 13.

The reconstruction of the landing zones allows for sufficient support of rotary operating wings aboard the Combat Center which, in turn, allows the wing to conduct the training necessary to remain an effective fighting force. MWSD-31 was assigned to rebuild the landing zones in place of a Marine Wing Support Squadron.

This means that the detachment was expected to provide the same level of quality and proficiency with a lack of personnel. This manpower deficiency provided the detachment with a unique set of challenges during the rebuilding. “We successfully prepared for this exercise with the amount of heavy equipment operators and

The process consists of surveying the land to determine its natural layout and slope, a route reconnaissance and an engineer reconnaissance.
