Fightertown honors Beaufort residents during Senior Tea 2017
Story and photos by Cpl. Ashley Phillips Press Chief
Marines and local senior citizens attended a Senior Citizen’s Tea aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Dec. 11. The event was held to honor and give back to the Beaufort area senior citizen community. The MCAS Beaufort Officers’ Spouses’ Club organized the event with the help of Marine volunteers from the air station. This year marked the 48th year of the time-honored celebration. “This is something that many of us look forward to all year,” said Jennie Green, a local Beaufort resident. “As soon as the event is over some of us will mark it on our calendar for next year!” The event has evolved
over the 48 years it has been held, taking on a spirit and tradition of its own. From the moment the guests arrive, they are completely taken care of. The OSC meticulously plans and fundraises for the event, ensuring that the event is well thought out and enjoyable. “As soon as we show up a Marine comes out, wearing their dress blues, and escorts us inside,” said Green. “They really do roll out the red carpet for us and make us feel special. Everything is planned out, down to the last detail. There is entertainment, refreshments, and gifts.” The event began with refreshments and tea. As the guests settled in both the Marine Aircraft Group

Marines and Sailors of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron and their families took part in
a Christmas party aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Dec. 9. The party was held to foster unit cohesion and to celebrate the upcoming holiday season. “This is one of the best parties I’ve attended since
I’ve been at the air station,” said Sgt. Anthony Stevens, an administrative clerk with H&HS. “It’s so great seeing everyone together, eating and socializing in their goofy Christmas sweaters. I think it really goes to show that this
squadron really gets along together well and this party isn’t just another work function.” Marines arrived at the All Weather Training Facility early in the morning to help set up for the party. Marines set up chairs and
tables for the dinner as well as garnished the building with Christmas decorations. “I know Marines got here extra early this morning to help make this event so special,” said Sgt. Maj. Edward Hebron, the sergeant
major of H&HS. “Without their hard work and dedication pulling off a party of this magnitude would have been impossible.” On top of serving food

Students from Bolden Elementary School graduated the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program on Laurel Bay Dec. 8. The fifth-grade class completed the 10-week class based on potential situations and the negative effects of illegal drugs. At the end of the course students wrote an essay on what they learned from the curriculum. “I taught the course over a 10-week period so I wanted to try to make it as interactive as possible,” said Cpl. Chris Stephens, the
school resource officer for Laurel Bay schools. “The D.A.R.E program can help create good habits that the students can use the rest of their lives with everything from bullying and peer pressure to substance abuse.” According to their website, the overall goal of D.A.R.E is to teach students the benefits of good decision-making skills that can help create a world where students are free to live their lives free from violence and drug abuse. “The only person in charge making your decisions is you and now you have the resources and
guidance to help you make them,” said Jason Clark, a former Marine and the guest speaker for the graduation. “The choices you make today will affect your tomorrow.” D.A.R.E was founded in 1983, and is now taught in more than 50 countries around the world, according to the D.A.R.E website. “Saying no to peer pressure can be hard to do when you’re at such a young age,” said Dr. Angela Stephens, the principal of Bolden. “I can already see good habits the D.A.R.E. program has instilled in our students and I can absolutely tell they’re going to benefit from this program.”
