Sailors, Marines, and family members celebrated the U. S. Navy’s 243rd birthday with lunch at the mess hall aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Oct. 17. The event served as an opportunity for the installation to honor the history of the Navy and for service members as well as civilians and veterans to share a meal together. Guests were treated to a varied menu of everything from grilled steak and lobster tail to a homemade Navy themed birthday cake. “I’ve enjoyed my time in the Navy so far,” said Seaman Apprentice Sunny Li, a religious program specialist with Marine Aircraft Group 31. “This meal is not only a great way to celebrate the history and traditions of the Navy, but is also great for strengthening the bond between us and the Marines on base.” According to history.navy.mil, On Friday, Oct. 13, 1775, The theme for the Navy’s 243rd birthday is “Forged by the Sea.” The motto represents the aspirational outcome of every Sailor’s journey in uniform and that every Sailor is shaped and strengthened into a more capable version of the Continental Congress voted to themselves through naval service. fit out two sailing vessels, armed see navy page 6

VMFA-251 returns to Fighter town

Story and photos by Cpl. Ashley Phillips

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 returned to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Oct. 15-16, after participating in and supporting Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course. WTI took place at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California, Sept. 5 - Oct. 15. “We were there in support of WTI Course 1-19, providing F/A-18 Hornet support,” said Capt. Charles Kirchner, a pilot and the officer in charge of S-1 for VMFA-251. “We provide support based on the Marine Air-Ground Task Force employment. We executed a full range of mission sets for the F/A-18, including air-to-ground and air-to-air tactics.” WTI is the premier flight school for Marine Corps Aviators. Upon completion of WTI, aviators are the subject matter experts of their flight platforms. It also serves as a full MAGTAF training set. While the aviators of MCAS Beaufort did not participate in the course, they provided F/A-18 support. The other sections of VMFA-251 who support flight operations such as maintenance, ordnance and intelligence were able to participate in the course. The experience of working at an operation tempo similar to a deployment was vital to the Marines, some of which were new to the squadron. “My section was working directly with the whole MAGTAF element, with the ground and air elements making sure see vmfa-251, page 4

each had the intelligence to complete the missions,” said Cpl. Destynee Martinez, an intelligence analyst with VMFA-251. “I think it taught a lot of our new Marines, who maybe this was their first exercise, an idea of the mission tempo we operate at while deployed.” This exercise is the best training for deployments the Marines will get, said Kirchner. The long hours and rigorous tempo gave the Marines a small taste for what the future may hold. The month and a half long exercise also served as a way to open their eyes to the importance of their day-to-day activities aboard MCAS Beaufort. “This really gives you context as to why your job matters — why the little details matter,” Martinez said. “You get the experience of how it feels to drop real bombs, to

complete real missions. It’s hard to describe, but through all the long hours, you begin to see the big picture of how you get to contribute to the mission.” Upon landing aboard the air station, families and friends were waiting for the Marines on the flight line with signs and open arms. “I love being back,” Martinez said. “There is no better feeling than coming home and seeing everyone waiting for us. Returning home to friends and family is all I need.” In the upcoming months, VMFA-251 will continue to train and maintain mission readiness. The experience of both pilots and the ground support will lead to the future success of whatever deployment or exercise comes next, said Kirchner.

“Overall, it’s things like this that will leave the strongest memories in my mind,” Martinez said. “This builds unit cohesion—you work non-stop and you do it with your Marines. You all embrace the experience together. We also know that this is what will prepare us for our upcoming deployments. I am looking forward to what comes next, because I know that what we do has a purpose. I love traveling and deploying. That’s what we do as Marines.”

This was the original framework of which the Continental Navy grew and as such constitutes the birth of the Navy. “I’ve never once been disappointed by a birthday meal in my 11 years in the Navy,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Brendan Henthorne, a corpsman with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251. “I am very thankful and humbled every day for the opportunity to serve in this great organization and to serve our country. This day helps to put in perspective of what those who came before me to preserve our traditions and allowed me to serve as well.” According to Navy.mil, the theme for the Navy’s 243rd birthday is “Forged by the Sea.” The motto represents the aspirational outcome of every Sailor’s journey in uniform and that every Sailor is shaped and strengthened into a more capable version of themselves through naval service. “The theme this year means a lot to me personally,” said Henthorne. “There is no telling where I would be if I hadn’t joined the Navy. It has given me everything that I could ever ask for and more. I hope I am lucky enough to enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship of this organization for many more years to come.”
