The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, directed by the Department of Defense, is committed to the prevention and ultimate elimination of sexual assault throught the DoD while providing needed care to victims of the crime. According to the Department of Justice, sexual assault is defined as any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities such as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape. Sexual harassment is defined as harassment in a workplace, or other professional or social situation, involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks. SAPR is supported by several agencies across the Marine Corps, including Headquarters Marine Corps SAPR, U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Chaplains, Clinical Counseling Program, Victims’ Legal Counsel Organization, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and Judge Advocate Division. The program provides services and extensive training. The training emphasizes how to prevent sexual assault through bystander intervention and other methods. The program also provides confidential 24/7 access to Uniformed Victim Advocates who provide crisis intervention and referrals to supportive resources, including medical care and dedicated legal representation. “SAPR is one of the most important programs in the Marine Corps,” said Tangela Calhoun a Victim Advocate for Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. “Marines and sailors

need to know about the recourses available to them if they are sexually assaulted. They need to know that they are not alone and that people like me are here for them to help them with anything they need whether it is counseling, medical aid, or to talk to a law enforcement representative.” There are two types of reporting when talking to a UVA, restricted reporting and unrestricted reporting. Restricted reporting allows a Marine who was sexually assaulted to confidentially report the assault and receive support, medical treatment, and counseling without a law enforcement investigation or command involvement. Unrestricted reporting allows a Marine who is sexually assaulted to report the assault and receive support, medical treatment, and counseling with the involvement of the command and law enforcement. Marines can switch from a restricted report to an unrestricted but cannot switch from unrestricted to restricted. The MCAS Beaufort Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office will be hosting different events throughout the month of April to raise awareness about the program. Some of the events include the SAPR Volleyball Tournament and the SAPR Run-A-Lap/Walk-A-Lap. To report a sexual assault at any time or to access the recourses available to sexual assault victims call the Department of Defense 24/7 Safe Helpline at 1 (877) 995-5247 or the MCAS Beaufort 24/7 sexual assault support line at 1 (843)228-6009.

Career Development Information Forum prepares Beaufort to face challenges of tomorrow Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Ashley Phillips Staff Writer

Civilian Marines attended the Career Development Information Forum at the Lasseter Theater aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, March 6. The MCAS Beaufort employees attended the forum to learn about programs and resources they have at their disposal to develop their skills and expand their careers. “As I stand here in front of you today I can say we don’t invest in you as much as we should,” said Jeff Bearon, the assistant deputy commandant of Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “We are going to invest more and train more to ensure you are successful as a civilian Marine.” The forum began with a speech from Col. Peter Buck, the commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort. Buck then

introduced Bearon who went over the current work environment and how his department is working to ensure Civilian Marines receive the training and support they need despite budget cuts. “It’s something you hear a lot, but it’s very true,” said Bearon. “We are being asked to do more with less; and that’s exactly what we are doing. We have been using the resources we have to make sure you have resources to expand your job skills and training. Just like the Marines have non-commissioned officer schools, we are making sure you have schools and classes to train you as well.” The rest of the forum walked the Civilian Marines through how to use a program to track their training, how to use their free online classes and utilize their Community of Interest Program. The COI program breaks down their jobs into 19 groups with a senior

executive in charge of each group. The Civilian Marines can use their communities to find mentors and learn about their job path. “Team Beaufort is facing the complex challenges of today,” said Buck. “In order for us to continue to lead and be prepared to face those challenges we need to invest in our most valuable resource, our people. Today I want you to ask questions, engage with mentors, get outside of your comfort zone and participate in the complex mission we have ahead of us.” For the last part of the forum the Civilian Marines went to a booth for their COI, engaged with one another and signed up to be in contact with their manager. The managers are in charge of making sure each community has the proper training and resources to ensure they can accomplish their mission, continue to train and get better.

Col. Peter Buck speaks at the Career Development Information Forum at the Lasseter Theater aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, March 6. The forum was held to educate Civilian Marines about the programs available to them to ensure they are fully trained to expand their careers and complete their mission. Buck invited them to engage, participate and take advantage of the forum. Buck is the commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort.

“For at least one hour a day for the month the corporals at in the course they are practicing the sword and guide on drill manual,” said Sgt. Jay Johnson, an instructor at Corporals School. “Drill involves strict attention to detail and discipline. There is no gray area for drill there is either a right way or a wrong way and what we teach and focus on is the perfection of sword and guidon drill.” One of the biggest lessons taught at Corporals School is that all NCO’s are the keepers of tradition, but corporals most of all. One of the oldest traditions is the NCO sword and being taught how to execute the drill of it. At the beginning of the sword evaluation the corporals recite the NCO Creed. The creed starts off with “I am the backbone of the United States Marine Corps, I am a Marine Non-commissioned officer.” The NCO Creed is memorized by the students to remind them of the core values they learned at boot camp. “One of the biggest traditions corporals and all NCO’s keep is the influencing of the NCO sword,” said Johnson. “Nothing is more perfect than the drilling of the NCO sword. The NCO sword is the oldest weapon in the armed forces and there is nothing more squared away than perfectly executing it. When we inspect the drill movements what we look for are the details in the little things. Is the sword three inches off the deck or is your thumb along your trouser seam. It isn’t perfection if you don’t pay attention to the little things.” Not all Marine Corps installations have corporals schools on them. MCAS Beaufort is the only one in its area to have a command sponsored corporals course for the junior NCOs to attend. “We receive Marines from the Tri-command, Florida, Philadelphia and all over the east coast,” said Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Garbutt the Chief Instructor at Corporals School. “I personally believe we have one of the best schools on the east coast. When I watch corporals come into the course they seem a little timid and unsure of themselves. But by the end of it you can really see the confidence they have in their leadership abilities and physical abilities. Drilling builds confidence in anything a Marine

does. After this course if the corporals want to go out and drill a platoon or do anything that involves leading Marines they will have the confidence to do so.”
