Naval Academy Midshipmen get a glimpse of the Marine Corps
Midshipmen are taught Marine Corps Martial Arts Program techniques aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Aug. 8. The Midshipmen visited the air station as part of their summer cruise, to experience the aviation side of the Marine Corps. While aboard MCAS Beaufort, they visited Marine Aircraft Group 31, visited F/A-18 Hornet squadrons, Marine Fighter Attack Trainging Squadron 501, and took a MCMAP class.

Marine Aircraft Group 31 gave Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy a glimpse of the Marine Corps during their summer training block. A Midshipman is a student at the USNA who, after graduation, receive a commision in the Marine Corps or Navy. The Midshipmen were given the opportunity to learn about how MAG-31 operates and the Marines that make up the units aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.
“Showing these Midshipmen what the Marine Corps is all about is crucial so they can make an educated decision when they graduate,” said Lt. Col. Adam Levine, the commanding officer of Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501. “These candidates are exposed to the different components of the Navy and Marine Corps, it is only right they see what the MAG has to offer.” After Midshipmen finish the academic year, they go through a summer cruise. Marines and Sailors give back at the Back to School Brigade Story and photos by: Cpl. Ashley Phillips Staff Writer
Marines and sailors volunteered with the Back to School Brigade at Bolden Elementary school aboard Laurel Bay, August 7 and 8. The Marines and sailors of the Tri-command organized, packed and handed out back packs of school supplies for military families. Eligible families were able to sign up to receive school supplies
from Operation Homefront for their annual Back to School Brigade. “I think this is such a great program,” said Tina Durrah, a military spouse. “I have four kids and it can be stressful sometimes when it comes time to go back to school. There are extra expenses and this is something small, but every little bit counts.”

The story behind MCAS Beaufort’s lone helicopter
Story by: Cpl. Samantha Foster Former Staff Writer
Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is known for hosting the Marine Corps’ East coast jet squadrons. However, once inside the gates of the air station, one cannot help but notice a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter on display outside the MCAS Headquarters building. If you look closer at the helicopter, you will notice that it is dedicated to Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Kevin Frank. Semper Fit keeps Marines active all summer Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes III Staff Writer
Marines of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island competed in a dodge ball tournament aboard MCRD Parris Island, August 8. The tournament was a part of the Semper Fit Summer Challenge that is held each year to promote health, fitness, and unit cohesion. Throughout the summer months both individual Marines and entire units participate in fitness activities to earn points in the challenge. At the end of the summer challenge, the top units or squadrons will win money which goes towards funding their Marine Corps Birthday Ball. “We tried to come up with fun and creative activities that shops could participate in,” said Kathy Williams, the Health Promotion Coordinator for the Semper Fit program. “Events like this dodge ball tournament help to promote a competitive fitness activity that can foster team work among the Marines. During the summer challenge we are also able to educate the Marines and unit leaders about resources and programs to help them.” To showcase the various resources and programs available, points were awarded for each activity Marines participated in. Marines could earn points by attending tobacco cessation classes, movie theater showings, physical training classes or participating in any number of individual activities such as climbing the rock wall at the air station gym. “At the end of the challenge we will be recognizing a first and second place winner from both MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island,” said Williams. “First place will be awarded $1000 and second will receive $750. Points are based on the percentage of unit participation.” The challenge started May 3 and consists of 21 events spread between May
and August. More than 20 units have participated since the start of the start of the challenge. “Our entire unit has been very active in all parts of the summer challenge,” Cpl. Derek Bolden, a postal worker aboard MCRD Parris Island. “Participating in the competition has helped us come together as well as get the added bonus of extra PT.” One of the last large events scheduled is a college mascot 5k set for August 18. The final unit points will be tallied August 31. To close out the Semper Fit Summer Challenge there will be a Summer Luau held September 5 at the MCRD Parris Island pool to recognize the winners. “The goal of the program is to give personnel opportunities to promote healthy lifestyle choices, team work, and camaraderie,” said Paul Smith, the Semper Fit Director. “It is our hope that Marines will consider this program as a resource to assist Marines and sailors in making lifestyle decisions that will enable them to be both mentally and physically prepared.” In the Message to the Force 2017: Seize the Initiative, General Robert Neller, 37th Commandant of the Marine Corps, makes statements that relate to the summer challenge. He states that as Marines, we need to take better care of ourselves because combat is the most extreme and demanding test and, also, that we need to have more fun as Marines, because it is a privilege to be a part of this elite warfighting organization. The Semper Fit Summer Challenge is a program that offers the resources and opportunities for Marines to begin executing these two statements given by Neller. For more information about the Semper Fit Summer Challenge and calendar events visit http://www.mccs-sc. com/news/calendar.asp.

portunity to experience different parts of the Navy and Marine Corps to help them gain perspective on life in the two Branches. “This summer I was able to go on a submarine cruise and then experience Marine Corps aviation at MAG-31,” said Midshipman Theo Freidenrich, a first year Midshipman at the USNA. “It was cool just to see a glimpse of what the Navy and Marine Corps have to offer. I can’t wait for my next summer cruise and learn a little more about the two branches and one day commission in either of the two.” The Midshipmen spent a
month aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort learning everything about MAG31. They were able to visit an F/A-18C Hornet aircraft squadron to learn about being a hornet pilot and visited Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 to learn about the maintenance that goes into keeping the hornets in flight. The Midshipmen were also able to visit VMFAT-501 and see the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter and witness the short take-of and vertical landing capabilities of the aircraft. I was proud to showcase the cutting edge of Marine Corps aviation to possible future Marine Corps officers,” said Levine. “These summer cruises help determine the path the Midshipmen take
when they are commissioned. Watching an F-35B display its STOVL capabilities could possibly be the decision making factor for a Midshipman to request a commission in the Marine Corps and even maybe apply for a flight contract. I hope we get more Midshipmen next year so we can show what the aviation side of the Marine Corps is all about and help them decide what they want to do after graduation.”

The Back to School Brigade was a two day event for the Marines and sailors who volunteered. On the first day they organized all of the school supplies and back packs by grade and packed them into the back packs. On the second day families had a specific time they could come and pick up a backpack for their children. There were also ten informational booths set up to
showcase the resources available to families. “I have received help from Operation Homefront in the past,” said Diane White, the volunteer liaison for Operation Homefront. “And now I am able to help give back through the same organization that helped me. It brings me so much joy to be able to help out other families. I understand that it can be expensive as school begins and there are so many expenses. Something like this can really make a difference. It took twenty Marines and sailors to pack and organize all 105
back packs with the school supplies according to each grade. Each volunteer was provided with an LOA at the end of the event. “It’s exciting for all the kids to be able to come here and get a new back pack with supplies,” said Hospital Corpsman Nikira Simmons, an admin specialist at the Beaufort Naval Hospital. “Having our Marines and sailors here volunteering is so important. We are here to give back, support our local community and help take care of each other.
