Command Information
Commanding General’s Intent By: J. D. Alford Brigadier General, USMC I am honored to assume command of Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and look forward to continuing the Command’s proud legacy of excellence. To that end, I want to share with you my intent and guidance to ensure MCI EAST-MCB CAMLEJ remains focused on our core mission - taking care of our Marines, Sailors and their families and ensuring the combat readiness of our Operating Forces. Take care of our people. People are the corps - our Marines, sailors, and civilian work force - are our greatest asset and deserve solid leadership. Provide our people the best guidance and resources available to accomplish the mission. Treat everyone with the mutual respect, courtesy, and dignity befitting a Marine and take care of our families. Support the Operating Forces. This is central to everything we do. Our
installations serve as the key force projection platforms for our Operating Forces where we will provide the best training for our Marines and support for their families. Recognize that maintaining the support of our local citizens and communities enables our installations to meet this objective. Prepare for the future. Our bases and stations are enduring platforms that must not only support today’s requirements, but also tomorrow’s. We must posture ourselves to meet future requirements by preserving our training areas and natural resources, and ensuring our installations evolve in concert with our Corps’ future operating concepts. To accomplish this, we must stay attuned to evolving technologies as well as be responsible stewards of all resources - particularly in today’s austere fiscal environment where every dollar counts. Keep our honor clean. We share a rich heritage born from the service and sacrifice of countless Marines, Sailors, and civilians who have served
our nation for over 240 years. By living our core values of honor, courage and commitment, we will uphold the legacy passed down to us, preserve the institution of our Corps, and ensure our Corps is ready when the nation calls. Never forget that every Marine, Sailor and civilian is an ambassador to the American people. Our individual actions matter. I look forward to serving with all of our Marines, Sailors, civilians and families at MCI EAST-MCB CAMLEJ. Together, we will meet the challenges ahead and ensure our Marines and families are cared for, our Operating Forces are ready, our installations are postured to support current and future requirements, and our heritage is preserved for the next generation of Marines.

Block Party brings Marines together Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes Staff Writer Marines attended an end of summer block party at the Brig and Brew aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Aug. 23. The block party was held to thank the Marines and sailors of MCRD Parris Island and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort for their participation in the Semper Fit Summer Program. “We really wanted to go out with a bang and show our appreciation for the Marines,” said Brent Westerfield a Single Marine Program Coordinator for the Tri-command. “We were able to get a 300-foot zip line and a stationary bungee as well as free food and beverages.” The block party was held to mark the end of the Semper Fit Summer challenge. Throughout the summer months, both individual Marines and entire units participated in fitness activities to earn points in the challenge.
“We had nearly 5,000 Marines participate in different events throughout the summer,” said Kathy Williams, the Health Promotion Coordinator for the Semper Fit program. “We were following the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ directive while also helping Marines have fun.” Halfway through the block party, awards were given to the winners of the Semper Fit Summer Challenge from both Parris Island as well as MCAS Beaufort. The top units or squadrons won money for their Marine Corps Birthday Ball. Marine Wing Support Detachment 31 won the top prize for MCAS Beaufort, while the 6th Marine Corps Recruiting District took home the gold for MCRD Parris Island. “This was the first time the 6th Marine Corps Recruiting District has participated in any part of the summer challenge,” said Williams. “They registered midway into the summer challenge and still came in first.”
The end of summer block party served as a catalyst for Marines and their peers to bond after working hard throughout the summer, while fostering unit cohesion and bringing them closer as an entire unit. “Our unit has been very active in all parts of the summer challenge,” said Lance Cpl. Brett Merrall, a cryogenic technician with Marine Air Logistics Squadron 31. “I think all of the events we took part in during the summer has really brought us together as a whole.” To close out the Semper Fit Summer Challenge, a Summer Luau is scheduled to be held September 5 at the MCRD Parris Island pool to recognize the winners. “This program has come a long way from its roots,” said Westerfield. “None of this would have been possible without the support of our Marines and sailors as well as the long hours our volunteers have put in.”

Cross-Fit competitions before but haven’t competed in anything of this magnitude. It should be a fun and challenging experience.” The four-day competition is made up of seven events that will range from a maneuver under fire to an amphibious tactical event. Nearly every installation around the Marine Corps will be repre-
sented at the competition. HITT competitions were held aboard Marine Corps installations and the top performing males and females were selected to go to the championship and represent their respective commands. “Sergeant Ortiz and I have been training vigorously for this competition,” said Stephens, the adjutant for MCAS Beaufort. “We don’t recieve the details of the challenges until closer to the competition, so we have been training for a
broad spectrum of challenges. I have cut out certain types of food and beverages and have been working out twice a day to prepare and make sure I am in shape.” Each challenge in the championship is scored separately. The maximum amount of points a challenger can accrue is 20 points per challenge. The male and female with the most amount of points at the end of the competition will be crowned the Ultimate Tactical Athlete. “We are going into this competition
with a confident attitude while maintaining a professional demeanor,” said Ortiz. “I think the competition is going to be a lot of fun but still challenging. It would be an honor to come back to the air station as the Ultimate Tactical Athlete. Nevertheless, I am going to give 100% and show everyone what the Marines of MCAS Beaufort are all about and what we are capable of.”

FAT-501 by being their simulated adversaries.” The training syllabus for VMFAT-501 consists of classroom work and practical application with the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter. By adding simulated but physical enemies to maneuver against, the pilots of VMFAT-501 can gain experience that goes beyond what a simulator can provide. “Simulators can only get you so far when you are learning a new aviation platform,” said Maj. Ross Fearon, the executive officer of VMFAT-501. “We invite VMFT-401 to train with us at least quarterly. By having the VMFT-401 ‘Snipers’ stand in as simulated enemies, our pilots have a person to think and maneuver against in real
life, and pressure on the other fleet squadrons here to train with us is alleviated. Training with the F/A-18 squadrons is beneficial but not always to them. With the ‘Snipers’ here, the F-18 squadrons can conduct their training and we can conduct ours. Everyone’s training needs are met.” VMFT-401 has a maximum amount of flights they can conduct annually. When scheduling their training, the squadron has to decide what training takes precedence around the Marine Corps. While aboard MCAS Beaufort, VMFAT-501 makes sure all their pilots have an opportunity to fly with the “Snipers.” “While VMFT-401 is in town, we mold our flight operations around them,”

said Fearon. “We make sure all of the pilots have the opportunity to fly with them and get experience with a real pilot simulating an enemy. The ‘Snipers’ are absolutely crucial when it comes to the training of our pilots. They give invaluable experience to the ‘Warlords.’ If it was up to me, I would have them permanently stationed here so we can train with them more often.”

Heavy Haulers, Helicopter Support Team flex their muscles during Northern Viper Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Andy Martinez Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 “Heavy Haulers” and Combat Logistics Battalion 4 utilized a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter for external-lift training at Draughon Range near Misawa Air Base, Japan, August 21, 2017, during exercise Northern Viper 2017. During the training, a helicopter support team with CLB-4, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistic Group, would rush under one of the Marine Corps’ primary heavy-lift aircraft, a CH-53E Super Stallion, to attach a 6,500 pound CONEX box to the helicopter while the aircraft hovers above them. The aircraft would then lift the container and briefly flies around the landing zone, returns and lowers the weight to the ground, permitting the HST to disconnect the weight. The pilots and HST repeated the process numerous times for accuracy and proficiency. “External lifts are important because it allows the Marine Air Ground Task Force commander to shape the battle space,” said Capt. Patrick X. Kelly, a CH-53E pilot assigned to HMH-462, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, currently forward deployed under the Unit Deployment Program with MAG-36, 1st MAW, based out of Okinawa, Japan. “Letting the MAGTF commander move his assets where he wants them, when he wants them there.” Unlike other aircraft used for external lifts, such as the MV-22 Osprey which can lift external loads of up to 12,500 pounds, the CH-53E has the capability to lift approxi-
mately 36,000 pounds. This allows the Super Stallion to transport vehicles, cargo, food and other vital equipment needed to accomplish the Marine Corps mission. “In a real-life situation, if [HMH462] was trying to emplace artillery, such as the M777 Howitzer to the battlefield, we could sling up the artillery and take it from where it was to where they need it to be to support to the Marines on the ground.” Kelly said external lift training couldn’t be accomplished without the support from the HST. “The Marines with the HST are very important, and they are all professionals,” said Kelly. “Having the Marines load the rig quickly and properly on the first try is crucial for the lift and these Marines typically get it every time.” Both units ensured they were taking the proper safety provisions to conduct the training. The crew chiefs observed the HST Marines from the aircraft while a safety observer Marine watched the Marines from the ground. The pilots cannot see beneath or behind the aircraft, which create hazards that require the safety observer, crew chiefs and pilots to communicate with one another to help prevent accidents. “HMH’s role in the aviation community is to support the MAGTF commander and provide assault support transport of heavy equipment, combat troops and supplies, day or night, under all weather conditions during expeditionary, joint or combined operations,” said Kelly.
