K-9 team earns certification

Lance Cpl. Oubigee Jones listens to Al ‘Hollywood’ Megget explain his shadow boxing drills for the day at the Charleston Boxing Club, Sept. 18. Sweat runs down the young boxer’s face as he wraps his hands. Two older men critique his technique. As the boxer finishes wrapping his hands, the older of the two men takes his hands and looks closely at the wrapping, saying, “No other boxers wrap their hands this way, only ‘Hollywood’ boxers.” At the moment the ringside bell sounds loudly in the comfortable silence of the small gym. The boxer stands and bobs under the ropes, stepping into the ring to begin his shadow boxing. Though this was the start of his time in the ring, this boxer’s practice session had begun much earlier before that, in his car as he began his hour-long drive to the Charleston Boxing Club. “I use this long drive as a way to get into the right headspace,” said Lance Cpl. Oubigee Jones as he adjusted the volume on the radio. “I turn on this playlist as soon as I hit the highway. It starts off with songs that make me think deeply; songs that remind me of how things used to be in my life. For me this is where my training session starts. It’s all about the headspace you are in with boxing.” As he concentrated on the road Sam Cooke crooned in the background “A Change is Gonna Come.” The administrative specialist grew up in Dallas,

Lance Cpl. Oubigee Jones jump ropes to warm up before his boxing training session at the Charleston Boxing Club, Sept. 18. Jones has been boxing since he was eight-years-old and uses it to bring balance to his life. Jones is an administrative specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.

A Marine and his Military Working Dog became a certified K-9 team aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Sep. 20. The provost marshal and the kennel master with the MCAS Beaufort Provost Marshal’s Office oversaw the certification of Cpl. Erik Powell and his military working dog, Joy. The certification scenarios were run in one of the storage warehouses on the air station and tested both the handler and the dog on their ability to work together. “It takes a certain type of person to be a military working dog handler,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Peirce, the kennel master of MCAS Beau-

fort PMO. “They have to be the type of person who is always trying to take it to another level, willing to work harder than ever before, and most importantly, mature. They aren’t just a patrolman anymore, they are charged with caring for a living animal.” A typical day starts off early for a dog handler. Each day the dogs are inspected, their kennels are scrupulously cleaned and then the handlers will ensure the dogs are physically trained a couple times a week. To build the bond between the handler and the dog, the handler must be fun and childish with the dog. “You need to be confident enough to be silly in front of your dog,

whether that’s using a high pitched voice or being loud and excited for them,” said Pierce. “It’s all about building rapport with your dog and getting him to work for you.” Training drills are constant for both the handler and the dog. Each team will come to a duty station after being trained and begin to work and train together. The trust and rapport that is built between the handler and dog is crucial when it comes to a real life scenario. “When both the handlers and the dogs get here I am confident in the schooling they’ve had, but training is a continuous process,” said Lt. Col. William Butters, the Provost see

Marine Fighter Squadron (VMF) 224 was commissioned May 1, 1942, at Barbers Point, Hawaii. Flying Grumman F-4F Wildcats, the Bengals entered World War II as part of the vaunted Cactus Air Force stationed on Henderson Field, Guadalcanal .Led by Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Robert Galer, in less of than two months the squadron accounted for more than 60 downed Japanese aircraft and conductedinfantry support missions while under constant attack from constant attack from Japanese naval, air and ground forces. The American victory at Guadalcanal helped stem the tide of the Japanese advance across the Southern Pacific and secured a crucial foothold in the long island-hopping campaign to Japan. After Japan’s surrender, the squadron served in various capacities in the States and overseas. The squadron entered the jet era in 1951 with the acceptance of the F2H-2 Banshee. In 1952, after completing a Mediterranean cruise aboard the USS Roosevelt, the squadron accepted the Grumman F9F-5 Panther, and was redesignated Marine Attack Squadron (VMA)224. In July 1956, the squadron became the first Marine unit to field the A4D-1 Skyhawk aircraft. On Nov. 1, 1966, the squadron acquired the Grumman F9F-5 Panther, and was redesignated as Marine All-Weather Attack Squadron

224. The squadron received the upgraded A-6E TRAM (Target Recognition and Mult-Sensor) aircraft in 1974. In 1990, the Bengals deployed to the Middle East, arriving on Aug, 28. Operating from Shaikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain, the squadron conducted deterrent and training sorties as part of Operation Desert Shield. From Jan. 16 to Feb. 28, 1991, the Bengals led the way in night combat operations in support of Operation Desert Storm, expending more than 2.3 million pounds of ordnance during 422 combat sorties. On March 6, 1993, the squadron was redesignated VMFA (AW)-224 and moved to MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, where the Bengals received the multimission F/A-18D Hornet. In September 1994, September 1995, and February 1997, the Bengals deployed to Aviano, Italy, as part of the United Nations force for operations Deny Flight, Provide Promise, Deliberate Force, Joint Endeavor, Deliberate Guard and Silver Wake. VMFA (AW)-224 deployed for UDP in the Far East in July 2001. For a majority of the deployment the squadron was split into two detachments. The detachments flew in support of both 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and 15th MEU, and conducted ATARS reconnaissance missions, normal squadron training and other such operations as deemed necessary by

1st MAW and MAG-12. During the course of the UDP, the Bengals operated out of Guam, Okinawa, Australia, Truk Island, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Korea, and mainland Japan. In July 2003, VMFA (AW)224 deployed again for UDP in the Far East. The unit operated out of Darwin, Australia; Okinawa; Guam, in support of Exercise Cope North; and Iwakuni, Japan. In February 2005, the unit was the first MAG-31 squadron to deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit returned in August 2005 after completeing a successful combat deployment at Camp Al Asad, Iraq. The squadron boasts an impressive record of sorties flown and delivery of ordnance in support of ground operations. In 2007, the Bengals were deployed tp Iwakuni as part of the Unit Deployment Program. In 2012, the squadron participated in another UDP rotation from September to March 2013. From 2009 to the present, the Fighting Bengals have deployed five times as part of the UDP, participating in multinational exercises and international joint training operations to strengthen alliances with countries throughout the region. The most recent UDP rotation by the Bengals was October 2015 to February 2016. VMFA(AW)-224 is currently deployed in support of combat operations overseas.

Lance Cpl. Oubigee Jones listens to Al ‘Hollywood’ Megget explain his shadow boxing drills for the day at the Charleston Boxing Club, Sept. 18. Jones has been boxing since he was eight-years-old and uses it to bring balance to his life. Jones is an administrative specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.

BOXING continued from page 1

Tex. For Jones, sports have always been a part of his life. He started playing soccer when he was four. He also ran track. At age eight he was talented at both sports already and had it not been for what happened on his way home from school one day, he probably would have focused solely on those sports.

“I came home with a black eye one day,” said Jones. “I was always smaller than the other kids and one of the bigger kids had been picking on me. When my mom saw it I told her the bruise was from soccer. She said, ‘ok’, but the next week she brought me some pamphlets and told me I was going to pick a new hobby. They

were all about martial arts or boxing.” As Jones worked his way around the ring shadow boxing, the younger of the two men stood in the ring with him, coaching. The older man who had been examining his hand wrapping, sat on the bench giving advice every now and then. Al ‘Hollywood’ Megget didn’t always sit on the sidelines though. “Mr. ‘Hollywood’ has coached some of the great boxers,” said Jones. “If it weren’t for him and his reputation, I wouldn’t have even bothered to drive this far away for training. He told me he could make me a champion; that’s part of why I’m here.” According to Jones the other reason he is boxing is because it helped him to find balance in life. When he started boxing all those years ago it gave him the confidence to stand up to bullies. “My mom didn’t con-

done fighting out of the ring and neither did my boxing teachers,” said Jones. “But after I got that black eye my mom wanted me to know how to stand up for myself because I was smaller and we lived in a rough area. She always taught me the ‘three strike rule’.” According to Jones that rule meant whoever was picking on him had three warning strikes and then he needed to do whatever it took to be safe and get away. After being confronted again by the bully who had given him that black eye and pushed him to learn boxing, no one bullied him again. “I chose boxing because it looked the coolest,” said Jones. “Back then it was just a fun hobby. Now that I’m older and joined the Marine Corps, it is something that helps me to find my balance in life.” As ‘Hollywood’ watched Jones contin-

ue his shadow boxing drills he sat back and explained that when you throw a punch your body moves from balance, to off-balance, to balance. Understanding the science behind boxing is critical to boxing the ‘Hollywood’ way. “I feel like after I joined the Marine Corps in Nov. of 2015 I lost balance in my life,” explained Jones. “I missed being on a team and playing soccer. I was really good at it and I grew up with those guys I played with. I tried playing on teams for fun once I joined the Marine Corps, but it wasn’t the same as high school. So I looked for a boxing coach.” Jones went to one other boxing trainer before he found Hollywood. According to Jones that is when he found his balance again. “With boxing it’s an art,” said Hollywood. “There are only two ways to take down your

opponent, with your right and your left. It’s an art form. Just like a painter paints a piece... an artist’s work is never done.” As Jones packed up his hand wrappings and gloves, he lingered in the door way talking to Hollywood. They talked about what he needed to work on before coming back at the end of the week to train again. “If Mr. Hollywood chooses to train you, that means he sees something in you,” said Jones as he put his boxing gear into his car, preparing to make the long drive back to base. “If you put in the time and effort he can turn you into something great. I have seen in my life that in order to find balance I have to reach forward, off-balance, just like boxing, and push myself beyond what I could do. Every Marine should do that, pick something that will challenge them. It doesn’t have to be boxing, but that is what Marines do, we constantly push ourselves.” Jones will be competing in Charleston’s 13th Annual Moja Cup Oct. 7. This will be his debut fight. Jones plans on continuing with boxing, hoping one day to become a professional boxer.

MCAS Beaufort observes Hispanic Heritage Month Story by: Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes III Staff Writer

Sept. 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed nationwide from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. This period recognizes the diversity in the United States and the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to the nation. The anniversary of independence for seven Latin American countries falls within the time period. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence day on the Sep. 15. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days within the month of observance. Hispanic Heritage month began in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and lasted only a week, but was expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. During this time period Americans celebrate the history, culture and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors come from Spain and Latin America.

Pedro Del Valle was an officer in the Marine Corps who became the first Latino to reach the rank of Lieutenant General. His career included service in World War I and World War II, Serving as the Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Okinawa. Del Valle served over 33 years in the Marine Corps and exemplified superior service and sacrifice as a General grade officer.

“This month is very significant for our country,” said Sgt. Olivia Ortiz, the Operations Chief for Combat Camera. “This time gives us all a chance to recognize the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to this great nation and celebrate their achievements.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic and Latino community is the largest and fastest growing minority in the United States. The term Hispanic refers

to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. Hispanics and Latinos make up about 17 percent of the total U.S. population and 17 percent of the military as well. “My parents are immigrants and the biggest patriots I know,” said Lance Cpl. Matt Reyes, an Ordnance Technician with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312. “They sacrificed so much for me growing up and I’m just glad to give back to the country that took them in.” Forty-three men of Hispanic origin have claimed our nation’s highest military honor. Thirteen of these Medal of Honor recipients were Marines, according to the United States Marine Corps’ History Division. Their sacrifice and dedication to selfless service embodies the Marine Corps’ mission to fight in any clime or place. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the men who paved the way before me,” said Reyes. “Serving as a Hispanic in the Marine Corps has helped shaped me into the man I am today and I’ll be forever thankful.”

During the conference Marines interacted with collegiate-level students from across the country, all of which have a Hispanic heritage, and have shown outstanding qualities in education and leadership.

Marshal of MCAS Beaufort. “They both come here from their school houses and our team of policeman and Marines works with them to make sure they are trained. Once they are ready, I oversee and certify each handler and dog team.” The certification ensures the team is proficient in obedience, biting and attack drills, and detection. For basic obe-

dience, Powell performed marching movements with Joy. For detection validation, the dog and handler both were tested. “To become a military working dog handler I did on the job training before I was able to go to school,” said Powell. “I spent 11 weeks in Lackland Air Force Base, Tex. for school, and immediately came back to the air station and began training with Joy.” Powell and Joy were able to complete accom-

plish their objectives and are now a certified military working dog team, ready to assist their unit with security and protection of the base. “I am extremely confident in every one of our dog teams,” said Butters. “We have a really experienced police officers and Marines who come together and make a great mix of knowledge and experience. I think that these two will make a great team and be an asset to our unit.”

Maj. Jose R. Hernandez poses for a photograph in an observance and control room of the air traffic control tower at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Oct. 7, 2015. The Marine Corps is made up of people from various backgrounds and locations who have found the honor, courage and commitment to uphold the traditions of a 241-year-old community. The Corps’ diverseness holds no prejudice for the men and women who are willing to pay the ultimate price to defend their nation.
