IDF ready for ground invasion
BY DAVID SAFFER
Israel is intensifying precision strikes at Hezbollah military sites in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa area to dismantle terrorist infrastructure but is not at war with the Lebanese people.
The Northern Arrows operation has seen the IDF target hundreds of weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers aimed at Israeli territory.
Two reserve brigades have been mobilised for a possible ground operation yesterday afternoon as hostilities escalate.
Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi told troops: “You hear the jets overhead, we have been
striking all day. This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah.”
Halevi warned Hezbollah that
Israel will continue to hit them everywhere.
“The goal is very clear, to safely return the residents of the north.”
Israeli defence systems intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Hezbollah towards Tel Aviv yesterday. The terror group claimed it had targeted Mossad’s headquarters.
Israeli authorities confirmed “significant property damage” from missile attacks around Safed. There are no reported injuries. Bomb disposal units and firefighters have been securing sites.

Air-raid sirens have sounded across northern and central Israel including in Haifa, Tel Aviv and Netanya. The Home Front command issued safety measures about being close to shelters and limited gatherings.
The escalation follows Hezbollah firing rockets toward Israeli civilians since the war with Hamas began almost a year ago.
World leaders, including US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the UN General Assembly in New York this week, have called for restraint and a de-escalation at the Lebanon-Israel border to avoid a wider war in the region.
Israeli leaders, however, have set their position to bring calm to northern Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address the Assembly in New York today.
He will then hold consultations to discuss the continuation of attacks in Lebanon.
Netanyahu, speaking at an intelligence base where he received a military briefing on Tuesday, gave his clearest warning about Israel’s stance towards the terror group.
“We will continue to strike Hezbollah,” Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu had a message for the Lebanese people, thousands are fleeing targeted areas.
“Our fight is not with you, it is with Hezbollah,” he said. “Nasrallah is leading you to the brink of disaster. I told you yesterday
to leave homes where he has placed missiles in your living rooms and rockets in your garages. Anyone with a missile in their living room won’t have a home. He is putting your country at risk. Free yourselves from Hezbollah’s grip, for your own sake.”
Halevi said Israel would accelerate offensive actions and reinforce military units in response to the security situation. Hezbollah should not be given any respite, he added.
GRAND ROSH HASHANAH EDITION OUT NEXT
Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said the IDF would continue attacks at Hezbollah targets to ensure the “safe return” of Israel’s northern residents to their homes.
“Hezbollah today is not what it was a week ago,” he told 7th Armored Brigade and 202nd Paratroopers Battalion troops during a visit to a military exercise. “It has suffered severe blows to its command, personnel and weaponry. We have more strikes ready. We know what to do and how to execute it.”
Gallant added: “We must be fully prepared to give the order to move forward when necessary. It’s extremely important.”
Israel is prepared for a long or short operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told a press briefing: “We strive that the operation is as short as possible, that is why we are striking with huge power, thus we have to be prepared for it to take time. Our mission in the end is to achieve the war goals and bring the residents of the north back to their homes, and we have to stand by our mission.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told world leaders that Lebanon was “on the brink” and warned that the world was approaching a “powder keg” situation with catastrophic consequences.
Foreign Minister Eli Cohen responded that if Hezbollah continued its aggression, Lebanon could face destruction similar to Gaza. Cohen criticised ongoing international support for terrorist organisations.
The IDF confirmed it had eliminated Hezbollah commander Muhammad Qubaisi, who headed missile and rocket systems in an airstrike in Beirut.
The IDF released data on operations at the Lebanese border earlier this week.
A spokesman said. “Fighter squadrons and drones have conducted nearly 3,000 flight hours over Lebanon. More than 1,500 Hezbollah targets, including over 1,000 types of weaponry, have been struck in 200 different areas.”
Biden told the Assembly that since the 10/7 terror attack “too many” people at the Israeli-Lebanon border remain displaced. “A full-scale war is not in anyone’s interest,” he said.
Starmer, who has told British nationals to leave Lebanon immediately, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a return of the Israeli hostages and a recommitment to the two-state solution at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool on Tuesday. He then travelled to the General Assembly to meet world leaders.
Numerous airlines including British Airways, Wizz Air, Iberia and Lufthansa Airlines cancelled flights to and from Israel and Lebanon due to escalating tensions, but according to Israel Airports Authority, over 51,000 passengers on 310 international flights departed Ben Gurion on Tuesday. Delta have extended cancellations until December 25. United Airlines and Air Canada has no timeline for flights. American Airlines returns March 2025, EasyJet a month later.
Herzog vows to return hostages
BY HARRY SIMONS
President Isaac Herzog visited Neve Shmuel Yeshiva in Efrat on Tuesday.
During the visit to offer support he met with Ohr Torah Stone network president Rabbi Dr Kenneth Brander and Yeshiva head Rabbi Avishai Milner.
In discussions with yeshiva students Herzog spoke about the plight of 101 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
“Let us not forget for a moment that a bitter and cruel enemy abducted the hostages from their homes,” he said. “This enemy doesn’t listen to what you and I are saying. They are waging a fierce war against us, and we, of course, must act with all our
strength, both to bring the hostages back and to restore calm and security.”
Herzog added: “We need to understand that if we know there are people alive, our brothers’ blood cries out to us from the ground. Whoever saves one life, it is as if they saved an entire world. There is no greater mitzvah than the redeeming captives. At the same time, we also understand that the discussion revolves around the costs and what can be done. We must do everything possible on our side, in the circumstances, to conduct serious and responsible negotiations to bring about a hostage deal and bring them home.”
He concluded, “We are in a very challenging period as a nation, as President, I find myself in an unprecedented period. A time of much pain, much grief, much worry, much anxiety. But on the other hand, also a time when we see the hidden lights of our people, the strength, inner resilience, supreme heroism. This gives strength and comfort. I am convinced we will get through this period as a people. It is another stage in the development of our nation in the land of Israel and region. Know and believe that together we will overcome.”

Herzog defiantly defends Israel on Sky News
BY DAVID SAFFER
President Isaac Herzog continues to defend Israel’s military actions as tensions mount on Israel’s northern border with Hezbollah.
Interviewed by Sky News presenter Sir Trevor Phillips on Sunday, Herzog was adamant that Israel does not want a war with Lebanon and called on allies to stand firm against terrorism.
“These leaders who were eradicated on Friday by the Israeli attack were meeting together in order to launch the same horrific, horrendous attack, that we had on October 7,” he said. “We expect all our allies will be side by side with us in combating this terrible situation and fighting like we are to bring back our hostages home.”
Herzog made it clear that Hezbollah started the war on the Lebanese front.
“It started following the horrendous attack of Hamas on October 7” he said. “Hezbollah since then has been bombarding us endlessly. Almost 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated from their homes. The entire north has been shattered. We kept on being restrained and restrained and restrained, but something has to end. We have to bring our citizens back to their homes. That’s the most natural obligation of any nation to its citizens.”
Herzog added: “We do not want to get
into a war with Lebanon, but Lebanon has been hijacked by a terror organisation which is also a political party in Lebanon called Hezbollah. It’s been armed to its teeth by the Iranian empire of evil, and all of these leaders who were eradicated on Friday by the Israeli attack were meeting together in order to launch the same horrendous attack that we had on October 7, by burning Israelis, butchering them, abducting and taking hostage old people and young, and little babies. This is exactly the same plan they’ve been planning for years under the empire of evil of Iran. So, we are fighting, actually the war for the free world.”
Herzog said Israel is looking to change the equation, bring home the hostages from Gaza and ensure an attack does not recur from Gaza and Lebanon.
“It’s very simple, life can go on in a peaceful manner on an internationally recognised boundary between Israel and Lebanon,” he observed.
Herzog added: “Our friends should understand that we are fighting their war too. There is an empire of evil which really believes in the jihadist ideology, in conquering the Middle East and moving on into Europe and the rest of the world. They want to plant bombs in your cities all over the world. Hezbollah has terror cells in countries all over the world so and you ask yourself, why? How come Iran armed a tribe in Yemen called the

Houthis on the shore of the Red Sea, they’re affecting the cost of living of each and every British family or European or American family. This cannot go on. We expect all our allies will be side by side with us in combating this terrible situation.”
Herzog also pointed out that 101 Israeli hostages had been 352 days in the dungeons of Gaza and the IDF would continue to strive to bring them home.
Herzog also addressed an inauguration ceremony for a memorial for residents of Jerusalem who fell during ‘Swords of Iron’ conflict with Hamas.
The ceremony took place in the midst of sustained Hezbollah strikes across the border.
“These are difficult, painful days, in which our enemies are doing everything they can to prevent Israeli citizens from living normal lives,” he said. “They are trying to harm Israeli citizens and the State of Israel, across the country.
“Tens of thousands of Israeli citizens were awakened last night to a heinous terrorist attack, directly targeting the Israeli home front, residents wishing to live in peace and security. We have never desired war, we do not want war, but let it be clear, we will not rest or be silent until all Israeli citizens return to their homes, safe and secure. It is the right and duty of
the State of Israel to protect its citizens. The defensive and offensive capabilities of Israel are proving themselves. We will continue until full security is achieved.”
Herzog praised the IDF and Israel’s security forces.
“Our heroes, in active service and reserves, have been working around the clock for a year,” he said. “They fight for all of us. They have no night and no day. They are paying enormous prices for us, for our security and future. May G-d guard them always.”
Herzog highlighted the courage of Israeli citizens for showing strength and responsibility.
“These are testing moments for us as a society,” he said. “We all stand with you, we are committed to getting through this time together and emerging from it to rebuild and restore, in the north, in the south, and throughout the land.”

MedEx aliyah drive for doctors
BY ADAM MOSES
The inaugural British MedEx conference attracted 100 Jewish doctors from across the UK to help address the growing crisis in Israel’s healthcare system.
The Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, Ministry of Health and Nefesh B’Nefesh launched the International Medical Aliyah Programme (IMAP) to streamline the immigration process.
IMAP is aiming to bring 2,000 Jewish doctors to Israel over a five-year span.
Doctors met representatives from the Israeli Ministry of Health and Medical Directorate to discuss licensing requirements, employment options and grants. Representatives from health insurance funds and hospitals conducted job interviews, enabling a smoother integration
upon arrival.
A special emphasis was placed on employment opportunities grant programmes from the Ministry of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, and T’kuma government administration.
Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer, who cancelled his trip due to the escalation of war in northern Israel, said: “Even in times of war and challenging times for the State of Israel we are witnessing the interest of dozens of doctors to make Aliyah and join the medical system. The programme will lead to the Aliyah of many doctors, with an emphasis on strengthening healthcare services in the Negev and the Galil.”
There has been a growing increase in Aliyah from the UK.
Tony Gelbart, Nefesh B’Nefesh, noted: “Their move will not only transform their lives, but also have a profound impact on the State of Israel and its healthcare system for generations to come.”
Minister of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, Yitzhak Wasserlauf, added: “Strengthening our medical

system, hospitals and response capabilities, particularly in the Negev and Galilee, is of paramount national importance. Attracting skilled medical professionals during the war enhances the quality of healthcare but also fosters community resilience. This initiative aligns with our mission to improve quality of life and bolster national resilience, providing Olim to thrive in communities with opportunities for professional growth while ensuring access to high-quality medical care for all.”
UK Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely said: “For years, Jewish mothers dreamed of their children becoming doctors. At some stage, that shifted to their children launching start-up companies. Now, we need to go back to the old-fashioned Jewish dream, Israel needs more doctors.” She added: “We need paediatricians, psychiatrists, gynaecologists and emergency doctors. We need the best people to bring their knowledge to the Israeli medical system.”
Jewish Agency Chairman Maj, Gen. (res.) Doron Almog commented: “The deep partnership with world Jewry proves itself integral to the strengthening of the State of Israel. The doctors who
make Aliyah are a symbol of the strength of this existential bond. These doctors are a tremendous contribution to Israeli society and their Aliyah is a source of enormous pride.”
The MedEx programme is spearheaded by the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, Ministry of Health and Nefesh B’Nefesh supported by key partners including the Jewish Agency for Israel, Ministry of the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience, Marcus Foundation, Gottesman Foundation and Jewish Federation of North America.
The number of doctors in Israel has increased over the past 15 years, but is 10 per cent below the OECD average.
Nefesh B’Nefesh has supported over 80,000 people from North America move to Israel, 90% have permanently made Israel home. Olim who moved to Israel with Nefesh B’Nefesh’s support include 3,120 medical professionals, including 960 doctors.
US shuls inclusive Yom Tov
The United Synagogue hopes to attract people who don’t normally feel comfortable attending shul over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
With thousands of congregants expected over Yom Tov the US has launched a disability inclusion focus with Gesher School over the High Holy Days. Rabbis, Rebbetzens and lay leaders are finding ways to support children and adults with additional needs.
US communities, including Borehamwood, Bushey, Golders Green, Mill Hill East and Radlett are in a pilot scheme with the US’s Lead Advocate for Additional Needs, Rivka Steinberg, to create an inclusive environment.
A suite of posters raises awareness about disabilities, some visible, others not. Members are being reminded that everyone is part of the community and to challenge stereotypes.
an Accessibility and Sensory Toolbox with simple and affordable suggestions of four sensory items for members to use in shul. The initiative follows the US’s accessibility symbols guide, which breaks down barriers for people with physical disabilities and neurodivergence. Included are new symbols to represent accessibility features in US communities.
The charity has re-coded its website with accessibility features of each US shul.
Steinberg said: “When families and individuals feel isolated they often disengage from religious and social life causing a loss of connection with Judaism and the community. Learning about inclusion happens in parallel to becoming more inclusive. It’s a process managed in small steps.”
Pharmaceuticals discovered in Eilat corals
BY ADAM MOSES
A new study from Tel Aviv University and the Steinhardt Museum of Natural History has detected traces of 10 common medications in coral samples collected from shallow and deep sites in Eilat. Sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic used for respiratory and urinary tract infections, was found in 93% of sampled corals.
The study was led by Professor Noah Shenkar of TAU’s School of Zoology and PhD student Gal Navon with Prof. Dror Avisar at TAU’s Porter School of Environment and Earth Sciences.
The results were published in the Environmental Pollution journal.
Shekar said: “These medications are taken by humans to affect a certain receptor or biological pathway, they can impact other organisms. If our pharmaceuticals should disrupt the spawning synchrony of coral populations, it would take us a long time to notice the problem, and when we do, it might be too late.”
The US and Gesher have produced a guide for making prayer services inclusive and to facilitate neurodivergent members and their families. There are ideas for welcoming people, creating a suitable space, designing services and communicating with attendees. Gesher has family-friendly resource booklets promoting accessibility and engagement during festivals.
The US and Gesher have also launched
Rebbetzen Abi Kurzer, Senior Rebbetzen of Golders Green Shul, is part of the pilot scheme.
She said: “What better time to be part of this programme when we focus on all the different people who make up our community. This year our shul will have a quiet room available from the hubbub of the service. There will be fidget toys, a booklet for families and we’ve put a ‘social story’ on our website to alleviate anxiety for people who might be nervous about coming to shul.”
Shenkar said: “We sampled 96 reef-building stony corals in shallow sites beyond the limits of recreational diving. We were surprised to find an extensive presence of medications even in the deep-water corals which usually escape contaminations affecting corals in shallower areas.”
Researchers obtained the most commonly used pharmaceuticals in Israel from Clalit Health Services. Testing for 18 compounds, they detected 10 in the coral samples. No sample was drug-free.
The 10 pharmaceuticals belonged to categories for antibiotics, blood pressure, antiplatelet agents, calcium channel blockers, laxatives, proton pump inhibitors, statins and antidepressants.
“Stony corals build coral reefs, the types we studied are very common in the Gulf of Eilat,” added Navon. “Coral reefs are a cornerstone of marine biodiversity. They provide food, shelter and spawning sites to numerous species, and support the human fishing and tourism industries. This delicate ecosystem is under pressure as a result of climate change, pollution and overfishing. The presence of pharmaceuticals in coral tissues adds another layer of concern, indicating that human activities even contaminate faraway marine environments.”
“Clearly these medications save lives, we have no intention of requesting people to reduce their use,” noted Shenkar. “However, we must develop new sewage treatment methods that can effectively handle pharmaceutical compounds. Each of us must dispose of old medications in ways that do not harm the environment. I know people who avoid medications, but when they eat a fish, they might unknowingly consume a ‘cocktail’ of drug residues absorbed by the fish from the marine environment.”

Resilience Amid Adversity: University Jewish Chaplaincy Reveals Increased Jewish Engagement Despite Rising Antisemitism on Campus
With the new academic year now in full swing, University Jewish Chaplaincy is presenting key findings from a survey conducted just before the summer break. This is the only survey of its kind that includes reflections from after October 7. Students from all UK regions where UJC chaplains operate were invited to participate, with over 400 responses received.
The vast majority of respondents (84%) were undergraduates, and 92% indicated that they belong to a JSoc in addition to engaging with Chaplaincy. The survey results highlight the significant impact of the events of October 7 on Jewish student life. Before the 2023-2024 academic year began, just under 53% of students had concerns about antisemitism on campus, while 32.5% were worried about their visibility as Jews. Forty-three percent expressed concerns about anti-Zionism on campus. By the end of this difficult year, these figures had risen to 67%, 40%, and 57%, respectively, with a startling 41% of students stating they were somewhat or very concerned about returning to campus this academic year.
These fears are reflected in the fact that
since October 7, over 50% of respondents to the survey stated that they had experienced antisemitism on campus at least once a month, and only 17.5% reported no antisemitic incidents.
Despite this, and the fact that only 43% of students felt their university had supported them since October 7, 53% indicated that their engagement with Jewish life and practice had increased as a direct result of the events in Israel. Students have demonstrated remarkable resilience, with 59% maintaining or increasing their involvement in wider university life, and over 68% continuing to recommend their university to other Jewish students.
One student remarked, “My university has an antisemitism problem, but the more Jewish voices, the better. Jews shouldn’t give up opportunities at prestigious universities out of fear.”
Many respondents praised the support they received from UJC, with one student stating, “They have been really supportive to the Jewish student community on campus, which is even more incredible considering they themselves were dealing with a lot after October 7.”
In fact, of the students who experienced antisemitism post-October 7, an overwhelming 94% felt supported by their Chaplain after making them aware of the incidents.
In 2023-2024, Chaplaincy recorded over 33,000 student engagements, ranging from home hospitality and events to support with antisemitism and religious freedom issues—an increase of nearly 6,000 from 2022-2023.
Sophie Dunoff, CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy, commented, “These figures don’t particularly surprise me. I could see early in the academic year that while our students were expressing real concerns for their safety and well-being, they were also determined to maintain their Jewish life on campus. Our Chaplains worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances, offering more meals, more opportunities for engagement, and events—and the students responded in kind.
It has been a year of challenge and intimidation for our students, but we can also tell a story of resilience, growth, and togetherness. The answer to hate on campus has to be more Jewish students doing more Jewish things, and we will continue to ensure those opportunities are available in the new academic year.’’

Chai Hosts Inspiring L’Chaim at The Wallace Collection
Last Thursday evening, Chai hosted an inspiring and memorable L’Chaim at The Wallace Collection, bringing together more than 170 of our closest supporters, including Trustees, members of our Medical Advisory Panel and Advisory Board, to thank them in person for their loyal support.
This perfect settling provided the ideal opportunity to share Chai’s exciting plans for the future and to update guests on the groundbreaking strides Chai has made, most notably the remarkable success of the NHS England Jewish BRCA programme. Since its launch in January, over 23,000 tests have been distributed,
marking a significant step forward in addressing genetic risks within the community. This initiative, in collaboration with Jnetics, aims to test 10% of the UK Jewish population within the next 18 months, demonstrating Chai’s commitment to advancing this vital campaign.
Chai’s Chairman, Louise Hager welcomed everyone and emphasised that cancer can touch anyone, regardless of age or status. She said: “What is not often recognised is the challenge of survivorship which just last week was brought to the fore through the very brave message beautifully articulated by the Princess of Wales in the video she shared with us all. The Princess epitomises the randomness of cancer. It doesn’t discriminate by age or social-economic standing. A young, fit,
health-conscious person can still be affected. But this isn’t news to us at Chai. Over the past few years there has been a marked change in the demographic of our clients with 1 in 3 now being under 50. The impact of a single diagnosis, especially at such a young age, can often affect 4 generations within a single family and we have developed a range of services to meet their individual and specific needs.”
Chai’s Chief Executive, Lisa Steele, spoke of her difficult decision to step down from her role in January and thanked guests, she said: “To so many Chai is a home, a refuge – it’s family. I feel incredibly proud and privileged to have played a part in Chai’s journey. A huge thank you must be given to all our trustees, advisory board members, medical panel, staff, counsellors, therapists and volunteers for everything that you do. Thank you also to our wonderful donors and supporters, without whom Chai would not be able to provide our specialised services and help those in the most trying of times.”
Guests enjoyed the opportunity to explore the magnificent treasures of the Wallace Collection, guided by expert curators. Attendees were also treated to a special viewing of the spectacular Flora Yukhnovich exhibition, a limited-time showcase that added an extra layer of beauty and inspiration to the evening.

GIFT Raises £1.2 Million in “Be a Giving Hero” Fundraising Campaign
GIFT is thrilled to announce the extraordinary success of its “Be a Giving Hero” fundraising campaign, which raised an incredible £1.1 million over 36 hours, and a further £100,000 reaching its target by the following morning, thanks to the generosity of over 6,000 individual donors and more than 400 fundraising teams. The overwhelming community support has reaffirmed GIFT’s mission to inspire and enable lifelong giving, ensuring that we can continue to make a life-changing impact on givers and receivers alike.
The campaign, which launched in the lead-up to Rosh Hashanah, saw a wide range of individuals and groups come together to raise funds in innovative and meaningful ways. One standout effort came from a group of teenagers who took on the largest zip wire in London, raising an impressive £28,000. Meanwhile, a team of women walking the South Coast raised over £25,000—demonstrating the incredible lengths to which the community went to support this cause.
“Now, more than ever, we need to counterbalance a culture of self-interest by teaching people—young and old—the power of giving,” said Michelle Barnett MBE, Director of GIFT.
“The overwhelming response to this campaign is a testament to the generosity and spirit of our community. Together, we are not just raising money; we are cultivating a movement of compassion and kindness.”
Barnett continued, “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who created fundraising teams, and to every single person who gave—not just financially, but also of their time and energy—to the Giving Heroes campaign. The community’s support has been remarkable, and without them, GIFT wouldn’t be able to have the impact it does. I would also like to thank those who generously match-funded our campaign— we are incredibly grateful for their commitment.”
The funds raised will directly support GIFT’s critical educational programmes, food distribution, and volunteer initiatives. From January to July 2024 alone, GIFT mobilized 4,080 volunteers, delivered 935 educational sessions in schools, prepared 9,200 hot meals, and distributed 44,000 food parcels to families in need. The money raised through this campaign will allow GIFT to continue meeting the growing demand for its services and expand its new volunteer hub and food bank in Hendon.
The “Giving Hero Missions” programme, which encourages
children to engage in small acts of kindness, also played a central role in this campaign, reinforcing GIFT’s belief that giving is not limited to financial contributions but can be found in everyday
gestures of kindness.

The Israel Guide Dog Centre
For many individuals living with blindness or severely impaired vision, PTSD, or autism, the world can often feel overwhelming and isolating. However, the Israel Guide Dog Centre (IGDC) has been providing a beacon of hope for over three decades, transforming the lives of hundreds of Israelis who would otherwise be leading severely limited lives.
Initially, the Centre only provided guide dogs, but they expanded their training programme a few years ago so that they are now also able to provide service dogs for people suffering the devastating effects of PTSD. And if a dog is not able to become either a guide or service dog, then they can become an emotional support dog for children with autism. In this way, they ensure that virtually all their puppies are able to play a role in bringing light and joy into someone’s life.
The heart of IGDC’s work is the powerful bond between clients and their guide or service dogs. This partnership is more than just functional—it’s life-changing. For those who are blind, a guide dog isn’t just a companion; it’s a doorway to independence, enabling them to attend university, secure employment, and fully engage in their community. For individuals with PTSD, these dogs provide emotional support, a renewed sense of purpose, and critical assistance in managing symptoms. They perform tasks such as waking their owners from
nightmares and calming them during intense stress. For children with autism, the presence of a dog can foster new ways of relating and communicating with the world around them.
Becoming a guide dog is no small feat; each dog undergoes rigorous assessments to ensure it possesses the necessary fitness, stamina, and temperament for this demanding role. However, even dogs that do not meet the criteria to become a guide dog find a significant role in assisting people with PTSD or families with children with autism, where their presence is equally transformative.
In the aftermath of the tragic events of October 7th, the need for guide and service dogs in Israel has surged. Combat-related blindness and PTSD are increasingly common, affecting both soldiers and civilians and leaving families to cope with the aftermath. Approximately 15% of combat injuries involve vision loss and in response, the IGDC is expanding its efforts—breeding more puppies, training additional trainers, and offering psychological support to those adjusting to these life-altering changes.
The work of the Israel Guide Dog Centre is a testament to the incredible
difference that a dedicated service animal can make in the lives of those facing overwhelming challenges.
The Israel Guide Dog Centre’s life-changing work depends heavily on the generosity of donors from the UK, US, Canada, and Israel. Supporting the IGDC is about extending our hands in compassion and solidarity, ensuring those who need it most know they are not alone, especially in these exceptionally difficult times.
ASK THE RABBI
IS G-D HE OR A SHE?
Dear Rabbi,
I hear people making statements about G-d saying that “G-d is non-binary.” What is the Jewish view? Is G-d male or female?
Gina
Dear Gina
When we refer to G d’s presence within our world, giving life to all things, then “She is the Shechinah.” When we refer to G d’s transcendence beyond this world, we call Him “The Holy One, blessed be He.”
In our prayers, collectively our souls take the role of the Shechinah, petitioning the Holy One, blessed be He. Our mitzvot, our Torah study and our prayer unite these two aspects of G d into a perfect whole. Through them, we reveal the essential G d who is beyond both the immanent and the transcendent - beyond all description and bounds. That is what we mean when we say, “On that day, G d will be One and His name will be One.”
EVOLUTION REALITY CHECK
Dear Rabbi,
Do you believe that G-d individually created all species or do you think that
by saying “let the waters...let the land bring forth” etc. that G-d merely allowed everything to evolve into what they are today?
Michael
Dear Michael
I believe that G-d created every species individually, as described in the Torah’s creation narrative. When G-d said, “Let the waters bring forth” or “Let the land bring forth,” this doesn’t imply a process of evolution in the modern sense, but rather an act of Divine will, where G-d directly caused these life forms to come into existence. Each species was created with its unique design and purpose from the outset.
The words of the Torah, particularly in the creation story, are understood by the ancient Sages and Kabbalists to be more than simple statements. They are seen as Divine “utterances” that contain the creative power of G-d, continuously sustaining the world. Kabbalah teaches that the world is a continuous act of creatio ex nihilo (creation from nothing), meaning everything in the physical world has a spiritual source, and this is what allows for the ongoing existence of the material world.
As for humans, the Torah emphasises the unique partnership between G-d and
parents in the creation of each individual. While human beings have a biological process, G-d remains a direct partner in every human life, infusing each soul with its spiritual vitality. This highlights G-d’s continuous, active role in both the initial creation and the ongoing sustenance of life.
DRIVING TO SYNAGOGUE (YET AGAIN)
Dear Rabbi,
I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am. Somewhere in the Torah, that I cannot quite recall where, but I am sure that you will know backwards, is a call to congregate for prayer and worship. There is no caveat if someone cannot make the journey by foot. Therefore, doesn’t the call to congregate for prayer surely take preference to davening alone at home? And your reference authority in Genesis does not really contradict and certainly doesn’t supersede the above. Your serve?
Melvyn
Dear Melvyn
The reason you cannot recall is because, while there is a directive to pray (per the words of the Shema, “and you shall serve Him,” – say our Rabbis, “this refers to the service of the heart,” namely prayer), there is no directive in the Torah to gather in Synagogue (or anywhere else for that matter) for prayer. There is, however, a Biblical directive to keep Shabbat. Hence that always overrides. Checkmate.
As this will be the final correspondence on this particular matter, let me end by thanking you for engaging in this matter and referring you to the letter which follows, that I received over the weekend. It really makes my point. G-d bless!
DRIVING TO SYNAGOGUE (FINALE)
Dear Rabbi,
May I add to your comment regarding travel to synagogue on Shabbat. I live in Golders Green and on rare occasions I walk to do the Torah reading in a West End synagogue on Shabbat. Pre Covid, I also prayed there there during the week. One day a young member of the synagogue turned up to say kaddish for his father. He lived two or three miles away, and from what he said it was clear that he drove to the synagogue on
Shabbat, he was not embarrassed to say so. I said nothing, as it was not my place to. He carried on coming after his year of mourning had ended as he enjoyed it. A few years later one of the members said to me that this young man no longer drove on Shabbat, he walked every week. When I next saw him, I asked what had made him change; he said that he saw that I had on several occasions walked all the way from Golders Green and would walk all the way back; if I could walk 12 miles on a Shabbat morning, he couldn’t see why he himself couldn’t do so with a shorter distance. This person is now Shomer Shabbat, has married and lives in NW London. It just goes to show that sometimes you don’t need to say anything, just lead by example. Can I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and sweet new year with my heartfelt wishes for your column to continue for many more years.
Michael
Dear Michael
Thank you for writing and for sharing that. Just to put this whole exchange in context, the bigger message here is that we enter into the New Year we should never judge one another other than favourably, just as we want G-d to judge us favourably. We should also appreciate that as we want G-d to give us, we need to give Him too. We do that by ensuring not to maintain the status quo but by upping our standards a little bit, year on year, each of us in our individual ways. Thank you for your kind wishes which I reciprocate to you and all readers.

The Sound of Silence – Seeking Hashem’s Unspoken Will Weekly Dvar Torah FROM
BY RAV REUVEN TARAGIN
Avraham’s willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Yitzchak was the climax of the 10 divine tests he passed and the seminal expression of religious commitment. Surprisingly, only one mitzvah commemorates this Akeida – shofar blowing on Rosh Hashanah. Chazal explains that the blowing of the shofar aims to remind G-d of Avraham’s commitment and our identification with it.
Although the Akeida may not have taken place on Rosh Hashanah itself, it is the day we commemorate it because it is the day G-d and we reflect on our religious identity and commitment. The essence and goal of Rosh Hashanah is zikaron, but the focus is malchuyot. The way we
challenging sacrifice of the ram initiated by Avraham’s own volition as opposed to his heart-wrenching willingness to sacrifice Yitzchak, which was commanded by Hashem Himself. In addition, two important postscripts of the Akeida narrative, Avraham’s naming of the place and his receiving of the divine blessings as a reward for his commitment, occur only after he sacrifices the ram. Why wasn’t Avraham’s willingness to sacrifice Yitzchak enough to merit G-d’s blessings?
I believe the answer lies in the difference in how Avraham arrives at the decision to sacrifice the ram versus how he comes to the decision to sacrifice Yitzchak. The latter is, of course, a result of G-d’s express request that he do so. For the former, though, there is no command or request.
looking for opportunities to serve. Like in the beginning of the parsha, where despite the intense heat, Avraham searched for guests to offer chesed to. Furthermore, why does the Torah tell us that the ram was caught in the thicket?
Chazal understood this as an indication that the ram was placed there by G-d for Avraham to find, even including the ram as one of the objects created during the six days of creation for this purpose. Though unspoken, it was G-d’s Will that Avraham followed up his willingness to sacrifice Yitzchak with the actual sacrifice of the ram in Yitzchak’s place. In fact, it seems that Avraham saw the ram as something G-d had shown him by naming the place ‘Hashem Yir’eh’ to commemorate G-d’s having shown him
G-d directs us not only through His spoken word but also through events and circumstances His Providence arranges. Man is expected to serve G-d not only by heeding His stated word but by searching for the additional opportunities He sends
It is this latter Akeida aspect that the mitzvah of shofar commemorates and focuses our attention on each Rosh Hashanah. Complete kabbalat ol malchut Shamayim means seeing ourselves as G-d’s creations charged with the mission of fulfilling His will. If we see ourselves this way, we would strive not only to fulfill G-d’s stated commandments but to determine and realize His unspoken directives as well.
May we learn from how we commemorate the Akeida to ‘remember’ how to live our lives as complete ovdei Hashem (servants of G-d) and merit through this G-d’s ‘remembering’ us and granting us life, welfare, and success in the coming year.

Rosh Hashanah: The Three Stages of Teshuvah
BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN
The second Daniel woke up, he knew something was wrong. He felt perfectly fine, but he had no memory of who he was. After searching his house, the only useful thing he could find was a book that he seemed to have written. It contained a list of instructions, explaining his life’s story and how he suffers from a form of amnesia, sometimes forgetting who he is. He had written this book as a guide for him in these situations.
As he continues reading through the book, he realizes that it also includes a detailed philosophy of life, a deep spiritual perspective of the world, and an emphasis on living with a mission-centered focus. The book instructs him to seek out a specific mentor, and when he does so, the mentor takes Daniel under his wing and agrees to teach him the true path to greatness. Daniel has an incredible desire to grow and improve, and although he finds the learning difficult, he enjoys the challenge.
As Daniel goes through life, he faces a number of challenges: financial difficulties, relationship struggles, and some health battles. However, the principles in the book and his mentor’s guidance help prepare Daniel for these challenges. He faces each one head-on, always battling through and never giving up. Most of all, they help Daniel deal with his arch-nemesis, Aaron. It appeared as though Aaron’s mission in life was to crush Daniel’s dreams and thwart his every goal. For every step forward Daniel takes, Aaron is always there to challenge him, attempting to push him two steps back. But Daniel never gives up, always managing to push past his challenges. Even when Daniel has a minor setback, he always manages to pick himself back up, re-harness his willpower, and keep pushing forward.
After a lifetime of growing, learning, and contributing to the world, Daniel is now a nearly perfect being. One day, just after waking up, the entire world disappears from under him and Daniel finds himself in another dimension, standing face to face with… himself.
“I’m sure you are confused” the other Daniel says, “but I will explain everything. I am the real Daniel, or at the very least, the original Daniel. I was created perfect. Everything in my life was easy, clear, and perfect. But at the end of my life, I felt that something was missing. I suddenly realized that I didn’t want to be perfect, I wanted to become perfect. I therefore devised a plan.
“I created a younger version of myself without any memory of who he was. I then created a perfect arch-nemesis who would challenge him, thereby pushing him to grow. This arch-nemesis would develop along with him, continuing to counter and challenge him as he evolved and grew. But I did not leave Daniel to fend for himself; I created a book of instructions that would guide Daniel back to perfection.
“You, Daniel, are a part of me. Therefore, through your journey, a part of me gets to experience the process of becoming perfect.
“You have just finished your journey; you
have reached a perfect state. Now, you get to enjoy the perfection you’ve built.”
A NEW YEAR
The birth of a new year is a time of reflection and resolution; a time when hope and inspiration fill the air. We dream about what this upcoming year holds in store; how we can make the rest of our life the best of our life. We all have ideas, ambitions, and aspirations that we yearn to bring to fruition, and the new year gives us “permission” to revisit these goals and breathe new life into them. For a brief moment, everything is crystal clear; we see our purpose and our path with vivid clarity. However, there is an underlying frustration that accompanies this time period as well. If we reflect honestly, we often realize that our new year’s resolutions are awfully similar to those of last year, and the year before, and the year before…
We have brief moments of inspiration, but they soon fade into oblivion, only to be resuscitated for a few more days the next year in the hopes that somehow this year might be different. However, there is another option — a way to actually make this year different. By truly understanding this time of year and fully tapping into its powerful themes, we can turn what was previously fleeting inspiration into lasting, eternal change.
THE DEEPER THEMES OF TESHUVAH
Elul and Rosh Hashanah center around the concept of teshuvah, and Parashas Nitzavim is clearly linked to this theme as well. The pesukim in Nitzavim discuss the theme of teshuvah, the importance of choosing life — choosing what is right and connecting ourselves back to Hashem (see the first pesukim of perek 30 in Sefer Devarim). As Parashas Nitzavim is connected to the transition from Elul into Rosh Hashanah, let us delve deeper into the concept of teshuvah.
Teshuvah literally means “return,” but whom, or perhaps what, are we returning to?
The Gemara (Kiddushin 39b) explains that Hashem created teshuvah before creating the world itself. What is the meaning of this enigmatic statement, and what lessons and implications does it have for us as we proceed through the teshuvah process?
THE PRACTICAL FORM OF TESHUVAH
The Rambam (Rambam, Mishneh Torah, Teshuvah 1:1) discusses the three-step process of teshuvah:
• First, one must reflect on their past and acknowledge that a problem exists.
• One must then transition into the present and strongly feel the pain of their mistake, regretting it wholeheartedly. Finally, one must look toward the future and resolve to never again commit this same mistake.
This three-step guide is the practical process of teshuvah. However, there is a deeper essence of teshuvah that is the foundation for these three steps, and understanding this deeper essence is the key to truly transforming ourselves through these three steps.
YOUR HIGHER SELF
Genuine teshuvah is not just about self-transformation; it’s about self-expression, returning to your true and higher self. As we previously stated, the Gemara (Niddah 30b) explains that while we were in the womb, we were in a perfect and transcendent state of being, and a malach taught us kol haTorah kulah. As the Vilna Gaon explains, this refers to the deepest realms of Torah, a transcendent Torah that lies far beyond this world, beyond the confines of space and time. (Quoted in Maalos HaTorah by Rabbeinu Avraham, brother of the Vilna Gaon. See also Even Sheleimah 8:24.) This Torah is the very root of reality, and you were granted complete understanding of its every detail. Not only were you shown this level of Torah, but you also learned your specific share of Torah; you were shown your unique purpose in the world and how your unique role fits into the larger scheme of the human story as a whole. You were given a taste of your own perfection, of what you could, should, and hopefully will become. And from this transcendent realm, you were birthed into the physical world with the mission to actualize everything you were shown in the womb while in your primordial, perfect state.
In essence, your job in this world is not to create yourself, but rather to recreate yourself — to re-attain your original state of perfection, as you were shown by the malach. This time, however, it must be done through free will — by choosing to become great. Only by overcoming challenge and difficulty and only by asserting your willpower can you fulfill your true potential. In essence, our entire life is a story of teshuvah — returning to our original, higher, and true self.
The shofar is a wake-up blast, meant to shake us from our stupor and return us to our true self. When we hear the shofar’s piercing cry, we yearn to return to our source, to our higher selves. The word “shofar” shares a root with “le’shaper,” to perfect and beautify. Strikingly, it also shares a root with “mei shafir,” the amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus while in the womb. When we blow the shofar, we are reminded to improve and perfect ourselves, to return to the fetal state of perfection we once knew, and to return to our true selves.
THE THREE STAGES OF TESHUVAH
There are three stages of genuine teshuvah:
• The first is individual teshuvah, where we return to our higher selves, our fetal selves, our true selves.
• The second stage of teshuvah goes beyond the limited self, turning the focus from individual to community.
• The third stage of teshuvah is returning to our absolute root and source, to the Source of all sources, to Hashem Himself.
COMMUNAL TESHUVAH
The Rambam, in discussing the laws of teshuvah, states that someone who removes himself from the Jewish community has no share in Olam Haba (Rambam, Mishneh
Torah, Teshuvah 3:11). In other words, even if this person keeps all of Torah and mitzvos and is an upstanding Jew, if he disconnects himself from the community, he loses his eternal existence. This requires explanation. After all, this person didn’t commit a heinous or evil act; he merely chose a life of isolation. Why should this warrant such extreme punishment?
The answer is profound. As human beings, we begin our lives as completely self-centered creatures, perceiving ourselves as isolated, separate, and disconnected from everyone else. As we progress through life, we learn to break down those walls and psychological barriers, recognizing that we are part of a bigger self, a collective self, and a higher consciousness. At root, all of Klal Yisrael is one, an interconnected self. Each of our individual neshamos are part of a greater whole, like individual cells that make up a single human body. A central aspect of Olam Haba is experiencing yourself as part of Klal Yisrael, as part of a greater collective reality. If, however, one disconnects themselves from Klal Yisrael, they have uprooted themselves from reality. Just as unplugging a light bulb from its electrical circuit extinguishes its light, a soul simply cannot exist when disconnected from its root. This is not a punishment, but merely a consequence.
This is the second stage of teshuvah: returning to our collective self, to the single soul of Klal Yisrael.
THE THIRD STAGE OF TESHUVAH
The third stage of teshuvah is returning to our absolute root and source, to the Source of all sources, to Hashem Himself. The Nefesh Hachaim refers to Hashem as the “neshamah shel neshamos” (the Soul of all souls). Hashem is the root of existence, the absolute root of all our souls. Our journey through life is about sourcing our existence back to Hashem; this is the ultimate teshuvah. We can now explain the Gemara that states that teshuvah preceded creation (Kiddushin 39b.). This is not merely a chronological description; it is a fundamental principle: Teshuvah is the root of this world. All of existence is created with the purpose of returning to its source, to fully reflect its absolute root — Hashem. May we be inspired to fully actualize all three stages of teshuvah this Rosh Hashanah and seal ourselves in the book of life, the book of true existence.

Are you a Jew?
“Are you a Jew?”. It’s a question my late father, Rabbi Stanley Michaels was asked before being beaten mercilessly and repeatedly on a sunny shabbat afternoon as he was walking back from teaching a barmitzvah lesson.
It was May 1999. He didn’t live in Birmingham but stayed regularly with my mother to take services in both Central and Singers Hill shuls. On this occasion he was taking a short cut back through the park.
“Are you a Jew?” asked his attacker. The words rang in his ears as his face was smashed and his nose broken. “Are you a Jew?” Yes, he thought, as he lay on the ground bleeding, reciting the Shema, convinced he was going to die.
He recovered physically from this vicious antisemitic attack, but the psychological trauma remained until the day he passed away from covid many years later in April 2020. Whilst already observant, the attack raised deep questions within him.
“I am a Jew, but what kind of a Jew am I? Am I the best Jew I can be? Am I connected enough to my fellow Jews? Am I doing enough to pass on the beauty, heritage and values of Judaism to the next generation?”.
It spurred him on to learn more Torah, teach Yiddishkeit (as hundreds of
barmitzvah boys will attest), and to live as the best Jew he could be.
The events of October 7th have pushed so many of us to ask ourselves similar questions, no matter our background or religiosity.
What does being Jewish mean today? How do we feel about proudly and openly saying and showing that we’re Jews? Are we connecting enough with our fellow Jews, both here and in Israel? And what are the consequences if we’re not asking ourselves any of these questions?
For over three years, I’ve been a proud Trustee of Jewish Futures - a dynamic charity with a mission to ensure vibrant Jewish Futures. That’s why Jewish Futures is a family of organisations.
GIFT transforms the lives of both givers and receivers through education, volunteering and incredible community support. AISH engages with university students and young professionals, providing immersive experiences and environments where they can explore and enjoy what being Jewish means. JRoots
inspires connection with significant places and events of the past with its trips of historical Jewish significance, including Poland. Forum for Jewish Leadership (FJL) with its professional development and educational programmes, nurtures the next generation of Jewish leaders globally, immersing them in politics, business and Israel advocacy.
It is only through such a rich diversity of offering that we can profoundly connect people with Judaism, encouraging and responding to those critical questions of modern Jewish identity, Jewish life, values and legacy. And its needed more than ever in today’s crazy world.
Antisemitic incidents have surged in the UK - in the first 6 months of 2024, the Community Security Trust (CST) recorded reports of 1,978 anti-Jewish hate incidents, up from 964 in the first half of 2023. In the last 12 months, more Jews have been questioning their identities, their Jewishness and contribution to their community.
At a time when the Jewish population remains vulnerable, terrifying events continue to unfold in Israel and as we
approach Rosh Hashonah, it’s never been more important to keep asking ourselves these questions: Are you a Jew? What kind of a Jew are you? Are you connecting with your Judaism, heritage, culture, values and people?

Moshe was keenly aware of the drama and dread that was a key factor in last week’s long Sidra. He therefore opens this Sidra with calming words - “You are all standing here”. He had another reason to reassemble them; this was his last day on earth, and he wanted to establish a firm agreement between Hashem and the Jewish People. “You are all here today- the heads of your tribes, your elders, your policemen, children and women, converts, some acting as wood choppers and water drawers.” Why are you here today - to establish this covenant between you and Hashem. Do not think, however, continues Moshe, that this is only for you who are physically standing here. All the Jewish people, forever, are to be bound by it. You, though, saw the land of Egypt and saw the “glamorous” despicable idols and maybe there is someone among
you who has seeds of rebellion and wishes to have an idol themselves! He or she or they may think, “Peace will be with me for I will follow my heart”. No! Hashem’s anger will flare, and the person will be subject to all the earlier-mentioned curses.
To the extent that when the nonJews see the desolation (as some did during the almost-2000 years we were almost banished from the Holy Land) they will be astounded - “Why is this place in such ruins? What is this anger all about? And they will understand that it was due to the Jewish people forgetting the agreement made between Hashem and their ancestors.
Moshe then continues with a prophecy - You will return to G-dyes, after a long exile, the Jewish people will do Teshuva and G-d will return with you (for He too is in Galut in some way) and gather in all your people who have been scattered from Yugoslavia to

At Menorah Foundation School our children are at the heart of everything we do. Recognising each child’s unique contribution and building on their self-esteem, we learn, grow and succeed together in a community rich in the values of Torah and Mitzvos, where every child is not only encouraged but inspired to reach their potential. By achieving together as a whole school community we encourage everyone to become life-long learners and ‘reach for their star’.
Applications for entry to the Nursery Class 2025 are for children born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022. You will need to submit an Application Form, a Supplementary Information Form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate. The closing date for applications is Thursday 5 December 2024
Applications for entry to the Reception Class 2025 are for children born between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021. EXPERT ADVICE
Hi Jacob,
I am considering becoming an appointed representative for mortgage and insurance broking, but I heard from a friend in the industry that the FCA has just become much stricter on how Principal Firms oversee their appointed representatives. Can you explain the practical consequences for me of this stricter approach?
Leo
Hi Leo,
After discovering that firms within the appointed representative (AR) regime are the source of between 50% to 400% more complaints and supervisory cases than directly authorised firms, (among other harms to the public), the FCA committed to tightening and improving the regime.
Under this new approach, the FCA is focusing on collecting additional information on ARs than previously and strengthening the responsibilities and expectations of Principal Firms. In practice, the FCA is requiring Principal Firms to comply with the new rules outlined below (among others), each of which will influence and impact on the closeness of the working relationship, oversight of, and information sharing, between the AR and Principal:
• AR appointment: The AR appointment must now be notified to the FCA at least 30 calendar days before it takes effect, and the application process is more intensive than previously. You should expect this to take longer and require additional information, to that which you may have heard about previously.
• Enhanced oversight requirements: ARs will be subject to enhanced oversight by their Principal Firm, which means you should expect the imposition of various systems, controls, and resources for detailed and effective oversight.
• Review of ARs’ activities and business: ARs’ activities and business will be regularly reviewed (at least annually), including the fitness and propriety of senior management, the ARs’ financial position, any changes to the size or volume of your business or structure, and the adequacy of the Principal’s controls and resources to effectively oversee the AR. You should expect to be required to provide requested information and timely support to these reviews.
• Annual reporting: ARs must provide full complaints and revenue information and confirm their details are correct as part of an annual attestation to be submitted by the Principal Firm. You will need to ensure your record keeping is detailed and sufficient to support this.
