Police officers have made two arrests in connection with the disappearance of teenager Moishe Kleinerman four months ago. Both suspects questioned overnight Monday were in the area of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s resting place in Meron where the 17-year-old of Modi’in Illit was last seen on April 2nd.

Police applied for an extension of the latest arrest at Jerusalem Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. A gag order into the disappearance of Kleinerman remains in place. It was extended by the Jerusalem Court earlier Monday. Police requested the extension as it could harm its ongoing investigation into the teen’s disappearance. “The gag order prohibits the
publication of any detail of the investigation and any detail that may identify the suspects,” a police spokesman stated Monday. Kleinerman’s family reportedly said in a statement that the investigating unit was in continuous contact about the progress of the investigation. “We see a deep commitment on the part of all those involved in the case, starting from the level of the commissioner, the district commander, the head of the District Attorney’s Office, to the last police officer of the investigating unit,” they wrote. “We trust the police to take whatever action is necessary to locate Moishe, who has been missing for 122 days, and bring him home. Accordingly, we demand that the issue not be dropped from the agenda.” It has been reported police are following up leads on Kleinerman’s whereabouts. But they are struggling to discover what happened despite large scale searches by Israel’s Dog Unit. Moishe’s parents travelled last week to Jerusalem for a meeting with Chief Rabbanim HaRav Yosef Yitzchak and HaRav Dovid Lau who told them that the whole of Israel was “united around Moishe”. HaRav Lau encouraged the Kleinermans to keep praying and gave them a blessing. A Jewish man in his 30s was reportedly arrested and released at Jerusalem’s Magistrates’ Court last month. Police became aware
information leading to the arrest was based on false information. No further details were allowed due to a gag order requested by the police. It has been reported police are fearful for Moishe though not from terror activity. It is believed he did not cross Israel’s border. Am Yisrael Chai Fund pledged NIS 50k for “concrete’ information to find Moishe. Ami Magazine also pledged $10k along with two private $27.5k donations to aid the search. A special investigative team has been formed at the Crime Investigation Unit. Police are investigating the possibility that Moishe’s disappearance could be connected to an unsolved disappearance three years ago. Moshe Ilowitz, 40, of Mevo Modi’im and a father of five, disappeared in 2019. His disappearance was similar to Moishe as he was last seen entering Meron. The case is ongoing. The parents of Moishe and relatives of Moshe visited the home of the Mekubal HaGaon HaRav Dovid Batzri, Rosh Yeshivas HaShalom, on Monday. HaRav Batzri led a special tikkun with his son, the HaMekubal HaRav Yitzchak Batzri. Afterward, he gave relatives a special amulet and offered more prayers. The public is asked to daven for Avraham Moshe ben Gittel.

GMP branded “incompetent” BY ADAM MOSES
Campaign Against Antisemitism has branded Greater Manchester Police “incompetent” for losing track of antisemitic crime data due to a new IT system. CAA discovered the police force has yet to provide explanations for the scandal after corresponding with the office of Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who is in charge of police governance for the city. “We are grateful to the Mayor for his help,” said a CAA spokesman. CAA has reported GMP to the Information Commissioner’s Office and appointed lawyers. “It is scandalous that one of the nation’s largest police forces has effectively lost its hate crime data,” said CAA. “Through its incompetence, Greater Manchester Police has deprived the Government, us and the public of critical information. Most pertinent to us, the force’s ineptitude prevents the Jewish community from understanding the nature of antisemitic crime and holding police accountable for their performance.” CAA added, “Manchester is home to the second largest Jewish community in the country, if its local police cannot even retain data that is so crucial to keeping that community safe, it raises serious questions about whether and how it carries out its actual police work.” GMP serves Britain’s third largest city. “Its data on antisemitic hate crimes is
essential to understanding the nature of antisemitic crime and holding police forces accountable for their performance,” explained CAA. CAA has requested data back to April 2021 regarding antisemitic crimes and non-criminal antisemitic incidents recorded by GMP throughout 2018, 2019 and 2020. All other police forces have provided relevant data to CAA and the Home Office. “The force has consistently failed to provide data, apparently because it would take days to extract it from its computers,” CAA observed. “It appears to have lost track of this data. Paradoxically, while insisting that the data requested was not easily retrievable, subsequent to our request, the force did publish part of the data on its website. However, a substantial amount of data remains missing. “The problem remains so severe that it is the only police force in the UK to have been unable to meet minimum data requirements set by the Home Office.” “This problem does not affect antisemitic hate crime alone,” CAA added. “Even the Home Office’s national crime statistics have, for several years until this year, omitted data from one of the country’s largest police forces. “With the assistance of the Mayor, we are continuing to press the force to explain itself, compile the necessary data and provide it.”

Tory MPs view Hezbollah terror tunnel
BY LILLY JOSEPH
Ten Conservative parliamentarians on a CFI delegation viewed a Hezbollah terror tunnel leading into Israel from Lebanon this week. During a visit to Israel's northern border with Lebanon, delegates received a strategic briefing from the IDF inside the tunnel . The tunnel extends 2km from Lebanese town Ramya into Israel and 80 metres underground. The IDF conducted Operation Northern Shield destroying Hezbollah tunnels into northern Israel from southern Lebanon. The Ramya tunnel was the longest and deepest tunnel found and sealed by the IDF. CFI Parliamentary Chairmen Stephen Crabb, The Lord Pickles and Lord Polak released a statement. "The size, scale and sophistication of the Hezbollah tunnel was shocking. It is deeply disturbing that during an escalating humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group has invested in terror infrastructure with the intention of conducting attacks against Israelis. They added, “Iran's malign influence in the region and support for proxy terror groups is a direct threat to Israel's security

and our visit to the tunnel was an important reminder why the UK Government made the right decision in proscribing the Hezbollah terror group.” Seven MPs elected in 2019 are in the delegation, many visiting Israel for the first time. The group includes Louie French, Paul Holmes, David Johnston, Tom Randall, Nicola Richards, Gary Sambrook and Jacob Young. The itinerary featured meetings with senior Israeli and Palestinian politicians, journalists and analysts, high-tech innovators and charities. Conservative MPs and Lords met with Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Idan Roll and visited the Israeli NGO Save a Child's Heart on Tuesday as part of the delegation.

Chabad launch proceedings for return of Schneerson Collection BY DAVID SAFFER
The Chabad movement has launched legal proceedings against the Russian government to recover the world famous Schneerson Collection in Moscow. The organisation has called on Israel not to return ownership of Alexander’s Courtyard in Jerusalem to Russia until the collection is released. An appeal has been sent to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on the matter. Threats by Russia’s Justice Ministry to shut down the country’s Jewish Agency for Israel office in Moscow has complicated matters although an Israeli delegation is set to travel tonight for meetings with relevant officials. The Schneerson Collection includes over 12,000 books and historic writings preserved by Chabad from the 18th century. “The Rebbe assigned us the task of returning the books from Russia,” said Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, a member of the team appointed by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to return the books to the US. “We have no doubt that the task will be completed as he (the Rebbe) wished, and the books will be returned

to the Rebbe’s library whether the Russians like it or not.” “The collection is a heritage asset for the entire Jewish people, in a way that goes beyond the boundaries of Chabad Hasidism,” Lawyer Uri Kedar reportedly said. “For historical reasons, since the end of World War I, the Schneerson Collection has

worldwide efforts to return the Schneerson Collection to the Chabad Chasidic Centre in the US. Kedar stressed, “Freeze all activity for the transfer of ownership of properties in Israel to the Russian government, and in particular the Alexander Nevsky Court, until the move that my client is promoting to return the Schneerson Collection as a whole to its possession will be successfully completed.” Chabad has taken legal action in the US for a number of years. Courts have ordered the Russian government to return the collection and issued sanctions totalling $170 million. In 1915, Lubavitcher Chassidim fleeing German troops moved the private library to safe storage in Moscow. After the 1917 Russian revolution, the Bolshevik regime nationalised the library. It was deposited to the Lenin State Library, now the Russian State Library. In 2013, the collection was moved to the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre in Moscow. Most books from the collection are digitised and available through the RSL Digital Library. Materials are utilised by research projects.

Israel security forces have demolished the West Bank homes of two terrorists behind the murder of security guard Vyacheslav Golev at a checkpoint in Ariel last April. Golev, 29, from Beit Shemesh, was shot at point-blank range while shielding his fiancée Victoria Fligelman, who was also on patrol. Fligelman from Ashkelon was not harmed. Yusef Aatsi and Yahi Merai of Qarawat Bani Hassan were arrested after a 20-hour manhunt following the terror attack. During the operation, riots broke out. IDF soldiers used riot control methods. Security forces arrested 10 Palestinians in other villages during the operation. "Hundreds of Palestinians instigated a number of violent riots, hurling rocks, Molotov cocktails and burning tyres in the direction of the IDF and Border Police troops," said the IDF in a statement. “The forces responded with riot dispersal means.” Aatsi and Merai carried out the attack following clashes between Palestinians and the IDF. A getaway vehicle with Israeli license plates was set on fire and abandoned. Prosecutors have filed an indictment

against a brother of an attacker who sheltered the terrorists. Israeli leaders praised Golev for saving Fligleman. The couple were due to marry next year. Hundreds of mourners attended Golev’s funeral at Beit Shemesh. Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov and MK Keti Shitrit attended the ceremony. Golev was the 15th victim of a spate of terror attacks in Be'er Sheva, Hadera, Bnei Brak and Tel Aviv during a few weeks of terror. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described the war against terrorism as a “lengthy” one but Israel would win. Defence Minister Benny Gantz added, "The State of Israel has always defeated terror and we will do whatever it takes, on all fronts, any time and by any means.” Victoria’s father, Yevgeny Fligelman, said, "Vyacheslav is an angel, he saved my daughter.” Beit Shemesh Mayor Dr. Aliza Bloch described Golev as a “hero”. Golev studied at Ariel University and served in a unit for ultra-Orthodox soldiers during his military service. He moved to Ariel with his fiancée. The Ariel municipality said that social services will support the Fligelman family.

its courts. A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson said, “It is beyond belief that sufficient evidence cannot be amassed to establish jurisdiction and that potential culprits are free to go without sanction. We are exploring legal options to ensure that justice is done.” A CPS spokesperson said, "The CPS takes racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism in sport extremely seriously because of the devastating impact it has on victims and wider society. Where there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest, we will prosecute these cases.” West Ham FC confirmed last year it had banned two supporters for life. It is not known if they are the defendants in this case. This is the third time CPS has dropped or reduced charges against suspects in antisemitic hate crime incidents in recent months. Metliss, meantime, has welcomed Newcastle fan Shay Asher being banned from attending matches for three years after performing a Nazi salute at Tottenham Hotspur supporters at St James’ Park, in October 2021. Action Against Discrimination has expressed “amazement” at the Crown Prosecution Service dropping charges against two West Ham fans in relation to an antisemitic abuse charge against an orthodox man on a Ryanair flight last year. But in a tale of two hate incidents in 2021, AAD has welcomed news that a Newcastle United fan is banned from attending matches for three years after performing a Nazi salute at Tottenham Hotspur supporters. Jonathan Metliss, Chairman of AAD, was dismayed to hear CPS’ decision regarding the Hammers supporters’ actions against a Jewish passenger on the London Stansted to Eindhoven flight in November 2021. There is “clearly sufficient evidence” to prosecute this behaviour, he noted. “This decision is both unacceptable and extremely disappointing,” Metliss explained. “It should be noted that two West Ham supporters had already been banned for life by West Ham following the same incident.” Metliss added, “The CPS says that it takes racism, homophobia and antisemitism in sport extremely seriously, but this is clearly not so. AAD calls on the case to be revisited and reviewed as a matter of urgency to ensure that justice is done.” CPS dropped racially aggravated harassment charges against Lee Carey, 55, and Jak Bruce, 31, earlier last week. Both were arrested in connection with an incident on a flight to Eindhoven in November 2021. Hammers supporters were videoed chanting an antisemitic song apparently at a Chasidic passenger. There were witnesses on board including Ryanair cabin crew.

Fans were travelling to a match versus KRC Genk. Footage went viral. In May, the defendants attempted to get the case dismissed, arguing the court lacked jurisdiction under the Civil Aviation Act. Judge Walker, sitting at Chelmsford Crown Court, rejected an application last month. However, the case collapsed as CPS have “insufficient evidence” to establish the alleged offences took place in British airspace to be within remit of
NEWS 5 Newcastle Magistrates Court. “This is the correct punishment for this behaviour and the treatment of the two incidents are wholly inconsistent,” observed Metliss. “It is about time that the CPS, football authorities and clubs took this antisemitic behaviour as seriously as any other form of racist activity and punish the offenders appropriately. “The fight and campaign to deal with this behaviour will continue unabated.” Asher, 24, admitted the charge of racially aggravated harassment during the Newcastle vs Tottenham match. He had initially denied the offence, claiming he was waving to someone. Newcastle Magistrates’ Court heard that Asher performed the Nazi salute and was overheard saying he wanted to fight Tottenham fans. The court was told that Asher’s “face dropped” when confronted by a stadium’s steward about the incident. He “quickly ran off” towards the exit of the stadium. Prosecutor, Brian Payne, said, “This defendant took it upon himself to produce a Nazi salute. He knew or must have known that there was a likelihood of there being a strong Jewish presence among the away supporters. It was a pretty deliberate and cynical action.” The court said the ban was being imposed to help “prevent disorder” at football matches in the future. Asher challenged a Football Banning Order. But it has been imposed and means he cannot enter football grounds and must keep away from England matches. בס’’ד

International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Israel Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely launched negotiations between the UK and Israel for a new Free Trade Agreement last week. The upgraded deal will expand a trading relationship worth £5 billion a year. It could benefit 6,600 UK businesses, including 5,600 small and medium-sized enterprises. Ambassador Hotovely said, “UK and Israeli economies complement each other in many fields. A modern free trade agreement will open new channels for collaboration in R&D, innovation and investment between our two countries whilst simultaneously strengthening both economies. I look forward to getting an FTA in place in the near future.” Trevelyan noted, “We want a deal that will play to British strengths while stimulating innovation and increasing opportunities

Trimble backed Israel and opposed terror BY DAVID SAFFER
David Trimble was a giant of international politics, defended the State of Israel to world leaders and denounced terror organisations. The former First Minister of Northern Ireland and Ulster Unionist Party leader passed away on Monday, aged 77. Lord Trimble was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (with SDLP party leader John Hume) for his role in the Northern Ireland peace accords, known as the Good Friday Agreement. President Bill Clinton led global tributes and recalled that a "lifetime of service” brought peace to Northern Ireland. "Time after time during the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement, he made the hard choices over the politically expedient ones because he believed future generations deserved to grow up free from violence and hatred,” he recalled. “His faith in the democratic process allowed him to stand up to strong opposition in his own community, persuade them of the merits of compromise, and share power with his former adversaries. His legacy
will endure in all who are living better lives because of him today." Former Prime Minister Sir John Major, said, "He shed his former opposition to the process, and became an innovative advocate for a peaceful settlement. He thoroughly merits an honourable place amongst peacemakers." Prime Minister Boris Johnson described Trimble as a “giant of British and international politics”. “He will be long remembered for his intellect, personal bravery and fierce determination to change politics for the better,” said Johnson. “He championed democracy over violence and played a huge role in setting Northern Ireland on the path to peace.” Former Prime Minister Tony Blair noted, "When some within his own ranks were opposed to the Belfast/Good Friday agreement, he supported it. When we needed his willingness to go the extra mile for peace, he travelled that mile. When there was the prospect of collapse of the process without strong leadership, he provided that leadership. His contribution to Northern Ireland and to the United Kingdom was immense,

unforgettable and frankly irreplaceable.” A trained barrister, Trimble joined the UUP in the late 1970s and eventually led his party into talks culminating in the Good Friday Agreement. Irish President Michael D Higgins said, “His work leaves a true legacy on the necessity and value of peace on our shared island for future generations.” Taoiseach (Irish PM) Micheál Martin added, “In his speech accepting the Nobel Prize, Trimble spoke about the “politics of the possible”. It is fitting that we pay tribute to Lord Trimble for his central contribution in setting us on the path to peace and reconciliation.” UUP leader Doug Beattie commented, “He chose to grasp the opportunity for peace when it presented itself and sought to end the decades of violence that blighted his beloved Northern Ireland. He will also be remembered as a great unionist.” DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson noted, “Throughout the Troubles, David was a committed and passionate advocate for the Union. He can undoubtedly be said to have shaped history in our country.” Former Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams recalled, “While we held fundamentally different political opinions on the way forward nonetheless I believe he was committed to making the peace process work. David's contribution to the Good Friday Agreement and to the quarter century of relative peace that followed cannot be underestimated.” Trimble was a parliamentary officer of Conservative Friends of Israel who led communal tributes. He first visited Israel in 2000 and regularly defended the country to world leaders. Trimble authored CFI’s pamphlet ‘Misunderstanding Ulster’, which challenged comparisons of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the Northern Ireland Troubles. “His contribution to trying to secure

James, Marlow, NJA, said in a statement, “Lord Trimble was a strong friend of the State of Israel and a huge opponent of terror organisations, such as the PLO, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. He was a man of conviction, huge charm, a giant of unionism and great sense of humour. David’s warmth and smile touched many and he was perhaps one of the most consequential political leaders of the last century, whose life left an indelible mark. David did not receive enough credit for his political bravery, but without the risks he took, there would not have been an agreement.” First Minister of Northern Ireland (19982002) and UUP leader (1995-2005), Trimble accepted a life peerage in 2006. He helped found the Friends of Israel Initiative under the leadership of former Spanish Prime Minister with Jose Maria Aznar, Italian philosopher Marcello Pera, former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton and British historian Andrew Roberts. The key aim was to counter delegitimisation against Israel and its right to live in peace within safe and defensible borders. “Israel is an inextricable part of the West. We stand or fall together,” the organisation notes on its website. The philosophy demonstrates Trimble’s standing to the Jewish world.

The Safra Foundation was the first major partner in a new wing, inaugurated in 2012, of Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies. In 2009, Lily sponsored a concert of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Taking place at Yad Vashem, the orchestra played Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Kaddish Symphony No. 3’ with the libretto ‘A Dialogue with G-d’, written and narrated by Holocaust survivor Dr. Samuel Pisar. Then President of Israel, Shimon Peres, attended. In 2013, the Lily Safra Chair of Holocaust Education at the International School for Holocaust Studies was established. Lily stated, "Yad Vashem stands as an eternal memorial to those who perished, it is also a beacon of hope.” She is survived by her children, Eduardo, Adriana and Carlos, and families.
AT THE VILLAGE OPTICIAN WE BELIEVE THAT LOOKING AFTER THE VISION OF YOUR CHILDREN FROM A YOUNG AGE HELPS WITH THEIR DEVELOPMENT AND GIVES THEM A BRIGHTER FUTURE We are specialists in children’s eye care, committing the time needed to assess your child’s vision fully and recommend the best solutions possible if they need corrective eyewear. One of the most common childhood vision problems is called myopia, also known as short-sightedness.
the risk of becoming highly myopic and developing complications increases. High myopia is a major concern nowadays, with almost 1 billion people worldwide expected to be affected by it by 2050¹. This is important because high myopia can increase the risks of vision impairment later in life.
Myopia occurs when children’s eyes grow more than they should. When this process doesn’t stop, we call it myopia progression.
But did you know help is at hand? Stellest™ lenses are Essilor’s best solution to fight children’s myopia and are clinically proven to slow down myopia progression by 67% on average.²
Today most myopic children wear glasses with standard ophthalmic lenses. These lenses correct myopia and allow children to see clearly. However, their myopia might still be worsening. This means that as children grow, their myopia may progress, requiring stronger prescriptions. The more the correction grows the more they are dependent on their glasses. This also means
If your child needs an eye examination or already wears standard spectacles for myopia , contact us today to book an appointment. We will carry out a thorough eye examination and if your child is myopic, we can start them on the Stellest™ journey, giving them the vision they need both now and for the future.

Russia threat to Jewish Agency 12 NEWS
BY DAVID SAFFER
Prime Minister Yair Lapid is evaluating Israel’s diplomatic options following news that Russia’s Justice Ministry is threatening to shut down the country’s Jewish Agency for Israel office in Moscow. Matters escalated a week ago when the Justice Ministry accused the Agency of “violating” unspecified Russian privacy laws by collecting information on Russian citizens interested in immigrating to Israel. There is concern Russia may ban emigration to Israel. It has been reported in Israeli media that a number of large Jewish organisations have received threatening letters from the Justice Ministry as they receive “foreign funding”. Smaller Jewish organisations

have not received such letters. The furore over Jewish Agency has reached the Kremlin who said on Tuesday the matter should not be "politicised" as it is a “legal” issue. "The situation should not be politicised or projected onto the entirety of Russian-Israeli relations," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "There are issues from the point of view of complying with Russian law. This situation should be treated very carefully." Lapid's spokesperson made an official response shortly afterwards, noting, “Relations between Israel and Russia are based on a long history, regular communication and mutual interests. The Jewish community is at the heart of these relations. If there are legal issues that arise in relation to the

important activity of the Jewish Agency in Russia, Israel is, as always, ready and prepared to engage in dialogue while maintaining the important relations between the countries.” Russia's Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, took a similar stance to Peslov earlier in the day that Israel had taken an "unhelpful" position towards Moscow over Ukraine and Jewish Agency. "It's a question for the Justice Ministry, that's the information I have, it is a legal matter," she noted in a TV interview Tuesday. Zakharova added, "Statements coming out of Israel are biased and completely unconstructive. When anti-Russian assessments are given by the Israeli leadership

at different levels, and when the policy is pro-Ukrainian and in favour of the regime in Kyiv, it raises questions." Analysts view the comments as a warning to Lapid who advised Moscow over the weekend of “serious” consequences. Lapid may recall Israel’s Ambassador to Russia, Alexander Ben Zvi. Measures could also include a continued delay at the Jerusalem District Court in transferring ownership of Alexander’s Courtyard in Jerusalem to Russia. The Jewish Agency issue has escalated since Lapid became PM. When Foreign Minister, he accused Russia of “war crimes”, since becoming PM, Lapid has been critical of Putin’s actions. Lapid has had no direct contact with
28 JULY 2022 Putin. Former PM, Naftali Bennett did, he was more cautious over his comments with Moscow and attempted to be a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow. Putin also had dialogue with Opposition leader, Bibi Netanyahu, during his record term as Israel’s PM. Following the Justice Ministry’s ruling, Lapid ordered an Israeli delegation to fly to Russia to address the legislation issues and ensure the “continuation of the Jewish Agency's activity in Russia”. Representatives would be from Lapid’s office foreign, justice and absorption ministries. "The Jewish community in Russia is deeply connected with Israel," Lapid said. “Its importance arises in every diplomatic discussion with the Russian leadership. We will continue to act through diplomatic channels so that the Jewish Agency's important activity will not cease." The delegation is set to travel tonight for meetings with relevant officials. An initial hearing at Moscow District Court is due today. Should the case be ratified Russian Jews will find it harder to emigrate to Israel. “Closing the Jewish Agency offices would be a serious event that would affect relations,” Lapid said this week. Lapid stressed the “importance of Russia to Israel” and led an inter-ministerial committee to consider Israel’s diplomatic strategy. Minister of Construction Zeev Elkin and Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman took a tough approach against Russia in the meeting. Other Ministers offered a measured view to placate Russia.

“Russia is isolated because of its invasion of Ukraine, and though Israel’s criticism of it is in on a small scale, it still tries to push us too.” There were calls for President Isaac Herzog to mediate as he recently did with Poland and Turkey. Herzog served as Jewish Agency head from 2018 to 2021. "I am working in full cooperation with Prime Minister Lapid,” he said. “We work for the State of Israel and for the Jewish people. We cooperate, and where I can help, I will." Participants in the meeting included Elkin, Liberman, Minister of Aliyah Pnina Tamano Shata, Jewish Agency CEO Amira Ahronoviz and World Zionist Organisation Chairman Yaakov Hagoel. Israel Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi has met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to discuss the issues regarding the Jewish Agency. Bogdanov denied the Ministry’s actions were ‘politically based’. Immigration and Absorptions Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata said diplomatic efforts would “clarify the situation”. Reports have emerged that a number of
He reportedly said, “Israel can join the Western sanctions on Russia, which it is not part of at the moment. The sanctions imposed on Moscow are not the result of a decision by the Security Council, but independent initiatives of the United States, the European Union, and other countries, and as such, are not binding for Israel.” Tensions have risen between Israel and Russia since the onset of the war in Ukraine. Israel opened the first field hospital in Ukraine but have not sent weapons. The government is aware the current situation cannot be underestimated as Russia’s influence extends close to its borders. IDF strikes against Iranian military targets in Syria are known. Over one million of Israel's 9.4 million population have roots in the former Soviet Union. Thousands of Russians have left the country since Putin initiated hostilities with Ukraine including Chief Rabbi of Moscow, Pinchas Goldschmidt, who refused to publicly support Moscow's invasion. The Jewish Agency was founded in 1929, it oversees educational and welfare activities in Jewish communities across Russia, and helps Jews emigrate to Israel. During the Cold War era Jews were barred from emigrating. One million Russians have emigrated to Israel since the fall of the former Soviet Union. There are an estimated 650,000 Jews in Russia. Last year, over 7,500 Jews emigrated from Russia. Since Ukrainian hostilities, 17,000 Jews have made Aliyah, another 40,000 are anticipated to apply.
Israeli officials, including Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai, view the Russian move coming as a result of Israel’s actions regarding Ukraine. “Russian Jews will not be held hostage by the war in Ukraine,” Shai said last week. “The attempt to punish the Jewish Agency for Israel’s stance on the war is deplorable and offensive. Russian Jews cannot be severed from their historical and emotional connection to the State of Israel.” Former Jewish Agency chief Natan Sharansky noted this week that Russia attempts to pressure whoever it can to undermine Western sanctions. “Russia is isolated because of its invasion of Ukraine, and though Israel’s criticism of it is in on a small scale, it still tries to push us too,” he said. Former Ambassador to Russia and Ukraine, Tzvi Magen, holds the view that Israel can pressure Russia without impacting on IDF actions in Syria though the Russian Defence Ministry has criticised operations.

No memorial – now what? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN
The issue of the Holocaust Memorial has finally come to an end. For now. In order for the project to go ahead, planning permission was needed to build the memorial at Victoria Tower Gardens. Westminster Council refused permission. This was appealed to the High Court who turned it down. Last week the Court of Appeal refused permission to appeal. In other words, no memorial, at least at the venue chosen by those in charge of the project. So now what? A pause for quiet reflection certainly. That includes me. In an earlier piece in another publication I had advocated for a programme of education, concentrating on young people visiting Auschwitz and seeing the horror first hand. Since then I have seen a number of articles on the subject and in particular those from Baroness Ruth Deech. The Baroness makes a number of points, one of which is that a memorial solely to the Holocaust is a two edged sword. We have all seen notorious anti-Semites declaring solidarity with the Jewish Community when it comes to Holocaust Remembrance Day and hours
later condemning Israel and calling for its destruction. In a speech to Limmud last year Baroness Deech said the following: “There must be no disguising of the menace of antisemitism behind a cloak of generalised hatred or distortion of history. The finger points at Church hostility, at the extreme right and the extreme left and at Islam. Generalised and expensive waffle about democracy and “Never Again” will not do it. Just as pulling down statues will not in reality improve the existence of black lives, so putting up a memorial will not promote safety and tolerance of the Jewish – and other – minorities. Building it without attention to what is needed by way of education could set back the cause of combating antisemitism for decades.” The vital word here is education. We need to make it clear that the Shoah was not a one-off which came from nowhere. Antisemitism has been alive and well for centuries. Jews were blamed for the death of Christ and suffered as a consequence.
The accusation that the Jews were Christ-killers encouraged Christian anti-Semitism and spurred on acts of violence including pogroms, massacres of Jews during the Crusades, expulsions of the Jews from England, France, Spain, Portugal and other places, and torture during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. Islam has always viewed Christianity and Judaism as second class religions and discriminated against believers accordingly. Across the Middle East and North Africa, Jews were subject to additional taxes and were granted lower status simply because they were Jews. The pro-Hitler approach of the Mufti of Jerusalem during the Second World War has been well documented. Whilst the Shoah was the worst by far of antisemitic campaigns, it needs to be seen in a historical context, both before and after and particularly when it comes to Israel. The language used by Israel haters is no different to that used from centuries gone
Any project concerned with the Holocaust must include the before and all of the after, otherwise it must surely fail.

by. Stories of organs being stolen from Palestinians mirror claims of Christian blood being used to make matzah. Claims that Zionists are responsible for world finance are just an updated version that Jews are only interested in cash and control the world by way of monetary conspiracy. As set out above, it is often these people who claim to oppose anti-Semitism yet in reality hate Jews just as much as those responsible for excluding Jews from the professions or carrying out pogroms. It is this context which is vital to highlight when educating the non-Jewish and indeed the Jewish community about the Holocaust. Anti-Semitism didn’t end with the Shoah, it is alive and well; thriving in the political left and right and in certain Christian and Islamist groups, despite many in our community determined to ignore one or more of these factions. Any project concerned with the Holocaust must include the before and all of the after, otherwise it must surely fail. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Bereavement is never easy; let’s discuss… OPINION PIECE BY JOEL BRAHAM
Four months ago, I was having a lovely Shabbat on a quiet day in March, blissfully unaware of what was in store for me when Shabbat ended. I found out my oldest brother had taken his life, leaving behind his loving wife and five beautiful children, ages 11 down to 4 months old. I was suddenly thrust into a world I never wanted to be in. It started with being up all night to catch an early morning flight to Tel Aviv and finished with taking the pulpit to be the lead family member to eulogise my brother. Have you ever had a car accident where the air bags were deployed, or were you a sudden victim of a crime? That jolt you feel, that shock, surprise, pain, anger, and hurt are all symptoms I experienced initially and continue to experience today. Having been in bereavement counselling for over 3 months, I have gone through many ups and downs. Questions, coming to terms with everything,
exploring feelings and the inevitable grandiose assessment, could I have done anything? The truth is that people generally do not know how to deal with someone who has been bereaved. I didn’t, before I was. I would make excuses not to go to shiva houses, thinking that I didn’t want to envelop myself in such sadness or that I would be a burden on people who just wanted to be left alone with some peace
and quiet to grieve on their own. How naive I was. I will say proudly that the people who flocked in and out of my late brother’s home in Ramat Beit Shemesh to tell us stories about him or just to share their own experience with a death that was so sudden were some of the most important experiences I took from that harrowing week. These were some of the building blocks I needed to get on with my life.
Don’t underestimate the power of making yourself uncomfortable by going to a shiva house or speaking to someone who is grieving. Companionship is ever-so important in the process.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Don’t underestimate the power of making yourself uncomfortable by going to a shiva house or speaking to someone who is grieving. Companionship is ever-so important in the process. I still suffer. I love my brother so much and I miss him every day. I think I will always be in some form, not 100% whole if that makes sense, but this is what happens to everyone. Eventually, we will all experience bereavement and will feel lost and alone. Some may be lucky and experience this in their old age. Others may not be so lucky like myself and experience this as a young person. I am writing this to hopefully break the stigma, and if I can help one person feel that they are not alone, then this has served its purpose. There are times when I burst out crying, thinking about my loss. That is normal. Everything we go through in grief is normal. The key is knowing that we will be OK. We won’t be the same, but we will be OK. If you have been bereaved and would like to get in touch or if you have anything to share, send me an email – robertlangdonad@gmail.com

Lead 3s Both North players in a team game made the same aggressive drive to what turned out to be quite a dodgy game. The lead was the same at both tables, a fourth-highest three of spades. Both declarers played dummy’s ten of spades at trick one. Both Easts took the trick with the king of spades and returned the jack of spades to dummy’s ace, suggesting that the spade suit was originally 5-3. At the first table, declarer decided that his best chance for nine tricks lay in clubs rather than diamonds. At trick three he cashed the ace of clubs and then led a club to the jack. West took this with the queen and then cashed three spade tricks to defeat the contract. The declarer at the other table was more experienced. He knew that in this type of situation it was best to have two options available and normal to cash the ace-king of one of the minors and, if the relevant queen did not appear, using the fallback position of working on the other minor for five tricks. As a doubleton queen would only yield one extra trick in diamonds compared to three in clubs, declarer cashed the ace and king of clubs first. When the queen of clubs fell he had nine tricks - the major suit aces, the two top diamonds and five clubs. What are the odds of the plays chosen by the declarers? On the assumption that the spades are indeed 5-3, the first line has a little less than 25% chance of success. The second declarer’s combination play raised his chance of making nine tricks to nearly 33%.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com CAN I TEACH A PIG TO BE KOSHER?
Dear Rabbi In the Torah it says that in order for animal to be kosher it must have split hooves and it must chew its cud. So as a pig has split hooves, if you could teach it to chew its cud, would it be kosher? Dayna Dear Dayna If I taught you to ‘oink’ would that make you a pig? The signs are not what make the animal kosher. They are Divinely pre-established identifiable markings
in order that we know which animals are OK for consumption for the Jew. In other words, G-d already determined, for reasons known only to Him, which animals I can eat and which are forbidden to me. He then enabled the various animals to be born with the two signs, one, or none in order to indicate to me what I can and cannot eat. Indeed the Talmud says in the Messianic era the pig will become kosher! Does that mean it’ll start chewing its cud then? I don’t know. Here’s hoping we find out soon enough.
CAN I CONVERT TO BIKE RIDING?
Dear Rabbi I recently converted in Israel to Orthodox Judaism after many years as a Liberal Jew .I was in conversation with my Rabbi there and he said I could no longer ride a bicycle even when dressed appropriately. I am curious where is this stated? Ruthy Dear Ruthy It’s in the Talmud Moed Katan 30b also quoted in Maimonides Laws of Repentance Chapter 11. Both state explicitly that as you embrace an Orthodox lifestyle, you become much holier and therefore you must accept upon yourself all forms of rigid undertakings, however absurd you might consider them to me. This would include things like no bicycle riding for women, no football for men and no music of any kind for either. To be sure, there is no Moed Katan 30b and Maimonides Laws of Repentance finishes at Chapter 10. So the above is made up. There is however a fifth volume of Code of Jewish Law, never actually printed: It’s called, ‘Common Sense.’ Every rabbi needs to know how to apply this when passing rulings that are not cited anywhere. Sure, there is a concept of modesty, and in some environments, a woman riding a bike might not go down well. But to issue an official ruling on the matter, as your rabbi did – Sorry! No way – no how.
I’D LIKE TO SHARE MY WEDDING
Dear Rabbi I bought a very expensive wedding dress which I would now like to donate to people who can’t afford to buy one. Do you know anyone I can contact? Alison Dear Alison What a wonderful gesture! It’s nice when someone looks to turn some of the material excess of a modern-day wedding into something meaningful for the sake of the needy. There are a few free loan funds which provide wedding accessories etc. to people who may require. You can look them up online.

KOSHER CULINARY DELIGHTS
Dear Rabbi I am doing a culinary course which involves learning about the eating habits of other cultures. Part of my research involves me planning a menu for a Jewish family and I wondered if you could give me a few ideas. Shen Dear Shen Gefiltta fish, chopped liver, chicken soup, matzah balls, roast beef, tzimes (carrots), potato kugel, lokshen kugel, Yerushalmi kugel and chollent. That’s for the starter. If there’s more room next week, I’ll discuss the main course.
SET IN STONE
Dear Rabbi I’ve been invited to a stone-setting. Is that like an unveiling and what is its significance? Alan Dear Alan Over the other side of the pond, they indeed call, what we call here a stone setting, an unveiling. The significance of a stone setting takes us back to the first ever consecration of a stone when our patriarch Jacob placed a rock over the very spot where he laid his wife Rachel to rest.
The significance of the act wasn’t merely a means of marking a burial plot. Rather many years later, exactly this time of year, as the Jewish people wandered into exile on route to Babylonia, they passed through Bethlehem. There, lo and behold on the horizon was the stone. It summoned them forth and provided them an opportunity to pause there and to pray. More precisely it gave them the chance to reflect on the uniqueness of character contained therein and then to look upon themselves and determine where they could learn from her life’s example. That is the essential purpose of every stone setting. To pause and reflect on the life of the individual loved one – on their unique life model and seek within oneself how one can emulate those examples set before them. This indeed is the greatest tribute one can pay.
CIRCUMVENTING CIRCUMCISION
Dear Rabbi Can a man be a Jew if he has never been circumcised? Stuart Dear Stuart If he’s born in – yes! If he’s ‘buying in’ – no!

Violent Speech and Violent Deeds BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Homo Sapiens are unlike any other creature. Brushed by the hand of G-d, we are formed in His image. We, alone, possess intelligence, consciousness, freewill, freedom of conscience, and creativity. With these remarkable tools we are expected to perfect a world which G-d intentionally left imperfect. Gifted with divine tools, we partner with Him in relandscaping our world. Chief among our gifts is the power of speech. Most living creatures communicate with one another, however, in most instances, their communication is extremely rudimentary. They communicate basic needs such as the location of food, migratory paths, or reproductive opportunities. Human beings, on the other hand, possess cognitive, creative, and abstract speech. Collaborative speech allows us to share mutual interests and better organize our common resources. Abstract communication allows us to convey theories about religion, science and self-consciousness. Through interpersonal communication we construct deep relationships, which adorn our lives and redeem us from the confinement of solitude.
SPEECH IN JEWISH LAW
In Jewish law, the power of speech is best exemplified by the laws of oaths or nedarim, enumerated in parshat Matot. By verbalizing an oath, we can impose human prohibitions upon otherwise neutral items, thereby redefining the halachik map. By example, articulating an oath or a neder not to consume an apple, converts that fruit into a forbidden item. G-d may not have banned the item, but human speech can. Such is the power of a human tongue, gifted with divinely empowered speech. For this reason, the laws governing oaths and the management of oaths were delivered to the heads of tribes, and not directly to the general population. Speech is too powerful to be handled by those who don’t fully appreciate its potency. Wise people, who appreciate the gift of speech, are expected to regulate it in themselves and properly calibrate it in others.
ANGRY TONGUES
Just the same, human speech can turn ugly. Our speech is never more foul, than when it turns aggressive and violent. At its best, communication unifies us. At its worst, it becomes weaponized, contentious, and divisive. We inhabit a world which is drenched in acrimony and angry communication. Rage encircles us, whether in the form of road rage, workplace rage, domestic rage, or sports rage- just to name a few of the most popular arenas in which our rage is brandished.. Why has
speech become so toxic and our discourse so antagonistic?
ANONYMITY AND INVISIBILITY
Ideally the internet should act as a “communication bridge”, enabling the seamless and rapid exchange of information and ideas. However, as with every technology, it can also expose the dark side of human nature. In the real world, there are natural “curbs” against verbal vitriol and hostile communication. In the real world we are sensitive to public perception and how our communication is viewed by others. Additionally, in the real world we encounter the “subjects” of our comments and are more likely to be courteous. The internet cloaks us with a veil of anonymity, while it also renders the subjects of our speech, invisible. Without these natural checks and balances which are built into normal communication, we are free to say whatever we want and however we want to say it. The internet has removed “social accountability” which, ideally, should serve as a “brake” against runaway verbal aggression.
ECHO CHAMBERS, AND RADICALISATION
Encountering different viewpoints also softens our language. Acknowledging and validating different views makes us less likely to aggressively vilify people who hold opposing views. Unfortunately, and again ironically, the internet shrinks our exposure and limits our encounters. The internet, with its information algorithms has confined us to echo chambers in which our news is filtered to reflect our own positions and interests. Constant exposure to our own opinions and to those who agree with us, radicalises our views rather than balancing them. Unconditional belief in our own absolute truth invites hostility to those who question those truths and are thereby our enemies who possess dangerous views. Verbal aggression is addictive. It debases the public discourse, creates a society of incivility, and soon starts to infect our communities and even our personal relationships. And it quickly leads to physical violence…
VIOLENT SPEECH AND VIOLENT ACTIONS In parshat Emor, the Torah portrays the crime of a Jewish man who blasphemed. Immediately, the Torah restates the laws forbidding physical violence- both against animal and man. These laws had been listed elsewhere, yet they are restated after this affair. Blasphemy is a form of violent speech- in this instance directed against G-d. Concerned that aggressive language will lead to violent behavior, the Torah cautions against any physical
violence. Violent speech always causes violent behaviour. Our world isn’t just tainted by angry speech, it has also become very violent. In the early 2000’s we faced the blight of ideological violence driven by militant fundamentalism. Unfortunately, we currently inhabit a world of non-ideological violence, in which violent acts are committed purely to vent anger and frustration. The United States continues to suffer spates of mass shootings and has witnessed a significant increase in the rate of violent crime. In Israel we have witnessed previously unheard-of outbursts of physical violence against policemen, teachers, and medical staff. Violence always escalates, and minor acts of aggression soon morph into large-scale acts of violence.
CIVIL COMMUNICATION
Israel is about to begin its fifth round of elections. Elections are polarizing experiences, as politicians exaggerate their positions, attempting to distance themselves from their opponents and gain votes. Often, politicians disparage or even demonize their political adversaries. Sometimes this leads to actual physical confrontations. Who should you vote for? That is obviously a very personal question. Perhaps, though, when deciding who to vote for, we should factor in the level of respect and dignity a candidate displays.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Typically, we vote for politicians who reflect our ideologies or who endorse our preferred policies. Perhaps we should also consider the tone and character of their rhetoric. Politicians who regularly insult their opponents and who employ crude and dehumanizing language are critically harmful to our social fabric. Long-term, politicians who conduct themselves with civility and respect for others, may be more beneficial, even if their policies aren’t exactly identical to our own. In a world of rage, insult and verbal aggression, role models who restore civility and grace are absolutely vital to the overall health of society. Violence guts any society and must be eradicated at all levels. Civility must start in our social discourse. If that discourse becomes toxic and antagonistic, we will find ourselves living very angry lives and suffering contentious relationships. Beware the long-term damage that violent behavior inflicts. In almost all instances, it just isn’t worth it. Originally printed in The Jerusalem Post Magazine, July 22, 2022 The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Honest Speech BY RABBI BEREL WEIN
The introductory subject of this week’s Torah reading concerns itself with vows and commitments that a person takes upon himself or herself willingly, by simply stating his or her intention. The Torah places great emphasis upon the spoken word. Everything that is uttered from our mouths obligates us to the commitment attached to it. Words are holy, and, therefore, they are also binding. The Talmud records for us that a person who did not stand by his word regarding a commercial commitment is allowed to be publicly rebuked in the synagogue, by the recitation of the statement that the L-rd who repaid the generation of the flood for their evil will also undoubtedly repay this person who has breached his word and trust in this particular local incident. Judaism recognizes that the basic physical difference between the human kingdom and the animal kingdom is one
of speech and communication. The ability to speak and converse is seen as being a Divine attribute somehow granted to human beings as well. Because of this, speech is to be treasured and not squandered. Evil speech, slander, lies, and libel are all viewed as being a violation of the relationship between G-d and man. Therefore, a person must always be careful with the words that one utters from one’s mouth. They are more powerful and influential than we might imagine. This is especially true in our time in a generation of nonstop communication and constant speech, text, and statements through

Matot Masei
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 31:13-54.
Moshe speaks to the heads of the tribes, telling them to relate the laws of vows and oaths to the Children of Israel. Contravening an oath or vow constitutes a Biblical prohibition. The sidra details who may revoke a vow on behalf of others in his care, but only on the day that he first hears about the vow. A husband may also revoke his wife’s vow in similar circumstances. G-d tells Moshe to wage war against the Midianites before his death. Moshe conscripts 1000 men from each tribe. They go into battle and kill all the Midianite males, as well as Bilam. They take captive the women, the young children, their cattle and material possessions.
leaders, that all our society is crumbling and dissipating. One of the drawbacks of our system of democracy and of elections is that our politicians are constantly engaged in electioneering and running for office, and, thus, make grandiose promises and statements as to their policies and behaviour after election. In almost all cases, these statements are, at best, an exaggeration, and, at worst, a total sham full of falsehood. Of course, because of our lifelong experience with political commitments, we expect that our elected officials, once in office, may not live up to the promises that they made in order to be able to enter those offices. In order to mitigate this almost errant weakness in an otherwise healthy society, leaders should fulfil what they promise, and commitments should be upheld. I realize that this is a very high bar set for leadership in the Jewish people. But even if we cannot reach it, we should at least know that it is there. Rabbi Berel Wein is Senior Rabbi of Beit Knesset HaNassi in Jerusalem and Director of the Destiny Foundation.

many devices, in addition to one’s mouth. The statements of the rabbis how people should be very cautious with the words that they use, certainly is even more relevant to our generation. It is interesting to note that this basic idea, upholding speech, and truth in words, was communicated personally to the heads and leaders of the tribes of Israel. It is in their presence where Moshe explains these laws that gives our reading its title of Matot. I think it is intentional that this concept was originally explained first to the leaders of the tribes, with all its laws pertaining to true speech and binding commitment. They were meant to set the example for society, generally, that speech should be honest. It should be fairly obvious to all if we are unable to trust the words and commitments of our
Moshe rebukes the officers for not killing the women, who had been the instigators of the immorality and idol worship that had led to the national catastrophe (see 25:1-9); he instructs them to now kill many of the women. Moshe tells those who have killed how to purify themselves from their state of tumah (ritual impurity). Upon G-d’s instruction, Moshe and Elazar count up the spoils and divide them in half, between those who fought in the war and the rest of the nation. A small percentage of each of these spoils is given as a tribute, one to Elazar and another to the Levi’im. The military leaders approach Moshe to donate the jewellery that they had plundered, as an offering to G-d.
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 32:1-19.
The tribes of Gad and Reuven ask to be given land on the east bank of the Jordan River, instead of crossing into the Land of Cana’an. Moshe rebukes them for their apparent cowardice, which seems to repeat the error of the spies 39 years previously. The two tribes clarify that whilst the women and children would settle on the east bank, the men would fight with the rest of the nation to conquer the Land and would not return to their families until the end of the war.
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 32:20-33:49.
Moshe accepts their request and instructs Elazar and the tribal heads to allow them to keep the land they requested if they do battle as promised. Some of the tribe of Menashe are also apportioned land east of the Jordan. Point to Consider: why is some of the tribe of Menashe now mentioned, having not been cited in the negotiations with Moshe? (32:33) Parashat Masei begins by recalling the 42 journeys that the Israelites made from leaving Egypt until the present time, when they are about to cross into the Land of Cana’an.
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 33:50-34:15.
G-d speaks to Moshe in the plains of Moab, telling him to relate to the nation that after entering the Land, they must destroy the idols of the Canaanites and make sure to drive them out the Land. G-d tells Moshe the boundaries of the Land that the tribes will inherit.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 34:16-35:8.
G-d announces the names of the leaders of each tribe, who will take charge of apportioning land to his tribe’s members. 42 cities are designated specifically for Levi’im to live in, surrounded by a designated amount of open space. These cities are

also to provide refuge for a person who has killed accidentally and is fleeing from the relatives of the deceased.
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 35:9-36:13.
In addition, six cities are designated as special ‘cities of refuge’, to which the accidental killer can flee. Instructions are given about what constitutes ‘accidental’ and how the community must endeavour to protect the accidental killer from those who are pursuing him. Men from the tribe of Menashe approach Moshe, concerned that the land given to the five daughters of Tzelofchad, a descendant of Menashe (see parashat Pinchas 27:1-8) would be lost from the tribe if they marry men from other tribes. Moshe responds that they should only marry men from the tribe of Menashe; this they do. This is the closing part of the book of Bemidbar. We stand for the final verse and then recite: “chazak, chazak ve’nitchazek”, a phrase asking for continued strength to study the Torah.
HAFTARAH
This haftarah, taken from Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) is the second of the three ‘haftarot of affliction’ read in the build up to Tisha B’Av. G-d rebukes Israel for turning away from Him and towards idols, forsaking the opportunity He gave them when He bought them into the fruitful Land.

Two Stages of History: Seeing vs. Hearing BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN
There was a man who visited his friend in a far-off town once a year. When he arrived one year, he was shocked to find a towering tree in his friend’s backyard, standing well over sixty feet tall. Most puzzling, though, was the fact that just last year there had been no trace of such a tree, not as much as a small sapling. Perplexed, he asked his friend, “I was here just a year ago, and this tree wasn’t here. What happened? Did you plant a fully-grown tree in your yard?” His friend smiled and explained, “This is the Chinese bamboo tree, a very rare and unique tree. Once you plant it, you must water it every day and make sure it has adequate sunlight. If you miss even a single day, the seed will die. For five whole years, you must tend to the plant diligently, without seeing a single inch of growth for your efforts. But once you’ve cared for the seed for five years, the tree grows at an accelerated rate, expanding exponentially over the course of just a few months to a staggering height of over sixty feet.” The man was shocked to hear this, and as he and his friend walked
away, he began to ponder the meaning of this strange tree. He eventually asked out loud, “Does the tree take five months to grow? Or five years?”
TWO STAGES OF HISTORY
As we explained in the previous article, the spiritual concept of seeing is the idea of observing something as it is, i.e., in a completely static state, lacking any movement. When you see a picture, you grasp the entire image instantaneously. There’s no process of constructing or building the picture in your mind; everything is just there, at once, without any effort. The spiritual concept of hearing, in comparison, reflects a process; a movement through time; an evolutionary progression; one of effort, concentration, and organization of parts. The relationship between hearing and seeing also explains the difference between the two stages of Jewish history. The first stage lasted until the time of Chanukah, the second stage spans from Chanukah until today. The first stage was a time of nevuah and miracles, a time of “seeing.” Hashem openly revealed Himself to the world and was clearly known to all. This is why a Navi was called a “chozeh,” a seer; it was a time where all people, not only the Neviim, saw Hashem with absolute clarity. But right around the time
of Purim and Chanukah, nevuah ended and the world fell into darkness. What was the meaning behind this transition? The first stage was a stage of seeing, where everything was clear and easy. Now, however, we live in a world of darkness, a world of hearing, where we need to choose to see past the surface, connect the pieces together and create that clarity ourselves. There were no open miracles on Purim; we had to connect the pieces together ourselves and see the miraculous within the natural to see Hashem within the world we live in. In the light, you can see; in the dark, all you can do is hear. You must pick up on every hint of clarity you receive, put the pieces together, and form the image in your mind while still walking in darkness. When you see something, you experience it all at once; there’s no process, no surprises. When hearing, when taking a journey, there can be a long-winding path, twisting and turning in all directions, leading you on a seemingly endless quest. Then, at the very last moment, there can be a sudden revelation that retroactively changes your perspective on the entire journey! Like a twist ending in a great story, the last turn can change the way you perceive the entire quest. This is the nature of the final ge’ulah (redemption). When Mashiach comes, we will suddenly see how all of history was leading us toward our ultimate destination. This is why the end of days is compared to laughter: one laughs when there is a sudden change, and the destination one thought they were heading toward suddenly shifts into something completely unexpected.
PERSONAL MEGILLAH: “HEARING” IN OUR OWN LIVES
The same is true in our own lives. Sometimes, only by looking back and putting all the disparate pieces together can we finally see the beauty and hashgachah in events that occurred throughout our lives. Any individual moment of your life might seem meaningless, but held in context of your entire life, this moment suddenly shines with infinite brilliance, as it’s seen as integral and deeply meaningful; its true purpose and meaning becoming clearer. As we have mentioned before, this why the baalei machshavah suggest writing your own personal “megillah,” keeping an account of events, experiences, and choices that occur throughout your life. Megillas Esther contains no open miracle, but when you put all the pieces of the puzzle together and read them in order, you clearly see the yad Hashem, how all the seemingly random events fit together so perfectly to create the hidden miracle of Purim. “Megillah” shares the same root as the words le’galgel (to roll) and me’galeh (to reveal). When we roll through the scroll of the Megillah, we reveal the presence and hashgachah of Hashem. The same is true for our own personal story. Each individual event or
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
experience may seem insignificant and happenstance, but if we put all the pieces together, connecting the dots between the seemingly random events, we begin to see the beauty manifest in our own personal megillah. We can suddenly see the turning points in our lives; we retroactively perceive the life-changing decisions and events that until now seemed meaningless and random. Whether it was choosing a specific school, meeting a friend or spouse at a specific time, or visiting a certain place when we did, our past becomes a masterpiece, ready for us to admire and appreciate.
THE JEWISH BAMBOO HISTOREE
Our history is like the Chinese Bamboo Tree. This unique tree spends years in darkness, accomplishing what seems to be very little, lost in the void. Years go by, and all investment toward its growth appears to be in vain. Only with belief and undying trust can one get through this phase of darkness. Then, when all hope seems lost, it suddenly skyrockets toward its true, towering height — out in the light, for all to see. Only then, once it arrives at its full figure, does everything become clear. At that moment, one realizes that it didn’t take five months for the tree to grow; it took over five years. The same is true with Klal Yisrael; one day, we will see how centuries of tragedy were actually bringing us closer and closer to our ultimate destination. The same is true for each of us; we must be willing to listen in the dark, to see past the surface. We must ride the waves of hardship and challenge, recognizing them as opportunities to grow and not only as burdens. One day, we will see clearly, we will recognize the why behind every what. Until then, we must learn to listen, to believe, to have faith. For only one who listens will one day truly see.

Matot Masei Matot Masei Word Search This week we have not one but two parshiot! Double the fun and we’re done with Bamidbar and gearing up for Devarim next week. Y’know how we were going to leave Midyan alone? And then they sent Balak, the evil sorcerer/prophet and then sent some naughty girls to cause a plague that killed 24,000? Well, Hashem wants 1,000 men from each shevet, tzadikim, to go to war with Midyan. But when they are finished, Moshe will die. Klal Yisrael love their leader and can’t bear the thought of loosing him. Not one person steps forward and Moshe has to pick lots. Moshe puts Pinchas in charge and off they set. Old, righteous, bookworm types, 12,000 versus the entire, trained army of Midyan and Billam. No contest, who’s in charge? Hashem. What are you stressing for. We win big time. We take down all the Midyanii men and the the five Kings of Midian as well as Bilam. Not a single Jewish soldier dies!! There is a lot of spoils and Hashem commands that the animals are shared equally with the people who stayed behind. All the gold and silver and jewels go to the fighters who give it all away to the Mishkan. Holy people, remember? Then we got the kitchen stuff. The pots and pans need toveling. Whenever you buy something from a goy, if it’s for food you need to dip it in a mikvah and make a blessing to sanctify it so it’s kosher. Since we conquered Sichon and Og, we get to divide up the land. The shevetim of Reuvain, Gad and half of Menashe want to stay there for the grazing and not go into Eretz Yisrael proper. Moshe tells them off for this, they value their money more than eretz Yisrael, and from what they said to him, more than their children. In a small way because
these people were really righteous, but Moshe was a great man and called them out on it. Will you sit back and let your brothers do all the fighting? They promise to help fight the wars before coming back home. That ends Matos, now for Massei. Hashem lists out all the places we stopped and tells us the borders for Eretz Yisrael and where each shevet will live. A city of refuge was a Levite city that someone who killed another person by accident could run to. The closest relative of the victim had the right to kill him if he didn’t go or if he left. Hashem only makes bad things happen through bad people, so if Bill was involved in an accident that killed Bob, Bill wasn’t a good person anyway. Moshe sets up three of these cities across the Yarden for the two and a half tribes and Yehoshua later set up three more in Israel. Do you remember the daughters of Tzelaphchad? The 5 women who got a portion of the land because their father was dead and they had no brothers? Well this week, their tribesmen are worried that they’ll marry men from other tribes and the land go to their husbands and sons and won’t belong to their shevet anymore! Hashem advises them to marry in their own tribes, they all marry righteous men and Hashem makes a miracle and these amazing women who were all over 40 have children who inherit their land! Finally, Moshe knew what actually happened in each campsite and we have officially learnt the whole of Bamidbar. Chazak, chazak v’nischazek!

Paperweight Perspective
Don’t add to your stress levels BY ALAN PERRIN, TRUSTEE
Psychologists have enumerated the greatest sources of stress and triggers for mental ill health in people’s lives. Many permutations exist depending on the publication – psychological, sociological, medical.
THE TOP THREE HOWEVER, ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY ARE: • Death of a spouse or loved one • Divorce • Marriage & separation
But what is missed in many of the “searchable” lists is very key to their resolution. One potent solution eloquently expressed the stressfulness of an event as the amount of adaptation or change it requires of an average individual. The initial impact of the crisis is by every account “bad enough”, but the consequences can endure for a very long time indeed, to make progress at a personal or family
level, many adaptions and changes have to be made. And making those adaptions is, in some views, the hardest transition. What Paperweight has resolved to do is attempt to reduce the adaptions and changes necessary by forward planning. Crisis management in all these scenarios is our forté but we would very much rather minimise our clients’ stress and mental ill health by forward preparation. As summer is around the corner, and the forthcoming calendar days’ boxes have been ticked and crossed and scribbled, we see that, in a blink of an eye we will be in the footsteps of the High Holydays in September. Our shuls will resonate with
a timeless and well-loved prayer, recited with awe and respect across the entire Jewish spectrum – “Unetanneh Tokef”. It deals with deep questions of the future being unknown and emphasises that no-one can be sure what is in store in the coming year: “who will live and who will die?” it asks, without pulling punches. This theme is an appropriate springboard and caption for drawing attention to the need to prepare – however uncomfortable “the conversation” is. To this end, Paperweight has created a booklet that addresses many changes that come about when faced with the No1 source of stress and mental ill health: death of a spouse,

partner or loved one. We have collated many years’ interactions with newly bereaved clients and entitled the guide “It’s time to have the conversation”. The focus is on getting one’s affairs in as much order as possible when wits and mobility permit. It is a gentle but very comprehensive guide. “It’s time to have the conversation” is designed as a starting point and progresses through many stages. If you find yourself “on your own” meaning that there is no-one with whom you feel you can have “the conversation” then contact Paperweight and a dedicated caseworker will help you work your way through those elements of the guide that are relevant to your situation. We promise to be methodical but sensitive, understanding and reliable. Above all we wish to relieve you of additional sources of stress at this difficult time. For a free copy of the guide, please email chaniecooper@paperweight.org.uk or call in to our office at 89 Bell Lane, Hendon NW4 2AS.
