Israel heads towards snap election as coalition collapses State of Israel would come to a standstill,” he said. “Unfortunately, our efforts did not bear fruit, so my friend Yair Lapid and I decided to hold elections at an orderly time.” He added, “I could not agree to harm Israel’s security. Israel’s coalition government has begun the process of dissolving the Knesset. A preliminary vote went through yesterday. The Constitution, Law and Justice Committee will prepare a second and third reading of the bill. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s coalition aims to complete the process next week. power-sharing agreement will be sworn in as Interim Prime Minister until a new government is formed. A date for Israel’s fifth election in three years has to be finalised. However, Opposition Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu has stated he wants to form an alternative government. And Likud’s leader needs to delay the legislative procedure, reportedly till the end of the month, to garner support for a working coalition. Early polls suggest that Netanyahu’s Likud Party will not gain

Continued from page 1 “Even if we go to the polls in a few months our challenges as a country cannot wait,” he explained. “We need to tackle the cost of living, wage the campaign against Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah, and stand against the forces threatening to turn Israel into a non-democratic country.” Lapid added, “What has happened in recent days, what is happening here tonight, is further proof that the Israeli system needs a profound change and a major course correction. A year ago, we started this change, we are continuing it now, and we are continuing together.” A war of words has started between political heavyweights. Netanyahu was adamant about his intentions to avoid a snap vote after Bennett’s statement. He told reporters. “People are smiling tonight because they feel we are getting rid of the worst government in the history of Israel. This is a government that succumbed to terrorism, to blackmail, lost the ability to control the cities of Israel. There is a sense of loss of personal security, something that bothers everyone. The cost of living is setting new heights, there is loss of national pride and people who are afraid to wave Israeli flags.” Netanyahu, who led Israel for 12 years, accused Bennett’s government of not caring for the “citizens of Israel, the West Bank or anyone but themselves”. The State of Israel, he said, needed a “rehabilitation” and “fundamental correction”. Lapid is working hard to dissolve the Knesset and end Netanyahu’s alternative

coalition hopes. Yesterday he warned against a Netanyahu bloc due to his allies, focusing on MK Itamar Ben Gvir of the Religious Zionist Party. “The most powerful person, the biggest threat in the opposition, is Ben Gvir, not (Netanyahu),” Lapid told delegates at the Eli Hurvitz Conference in Jerusalem. “His message is violence, pure racist nationalism. Netanyahu knows he can’t evade his (corruption) trial so he depends on Ben Gvir entirely. The extremists campaign on steamrolling everybody, tearing down the Knesset and getting rid of all rights. “Israelis have chosen the common good, which isn’t an easy choice, it should be difficult. You must have much grit to balance the different concerns. Our government is anything but an experiment. The extremists believe yelling louder would get them to victory, they’re wrong.” Lapid added, “Macron won again in France. Before Biden beat Trump, he was accused of being too moderate. The moderates win, the extremists don’t know how to run a country. They failed because hatred is a lousy work plan. Our government is a decision on a new Israeli agenda. Our mission is to make those who think differently cooperate. Running a country is a serious matter, this is statecraft, taking responsibility, understanding that nothing is handed to you.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz has ruled out forming a government with Netanyahu. Gantz told a Blue and White faction meeting, “Netanyahu has exhausted the political trust that he can be given. We’ll

Department spokesman Ned Price in a statement. Price added, “The strength of our relationship does not depend on who sits in the Oval Office. It doesn’t depend on who sits in the Prime Minister’s chair in Israel.” Biden will hold talks with Israeli leaders, visit Yad Vashem and meet athletes at the Maccabiah Games. He will also hold talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Gulf Cooperation Council leaders.

form as broad a government as possible.” Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman is also against Netanyahu returning. “During (Netanyahu’s) tenure, the Mount Meron disaster happened, a year ago he surrendered to the ultimatum of Islamic Jihad during the Jerusalem flag march, everything is registered in his name,” Liberman told the Eli Horowitz Conference. “If Netanyahu had really cared about the State of Israel, his camp and his party, he would have given up the leadership of the Likud party and the government, taking a time-out until the end of the legal proceedings against him.” Lieberman added, “As soon as possible we will form a government that can act on behalf of the citizens of Israel.” Justice Committee chairman MK Gilad Kariv intends advancing a bill to prohibit anyone charged with criminal offences forming a government. Netanyahu’s much publicised corruption case is still ongoing. He denies charges and has consistently said he has been part of a “witch hunt” against him. Bennett will not support a bill to block Netanyahu running in the elections. “I don’t believe that now, on the eve of a new election, is the time to change the rules of the game,” he said this week. The election news will not stop US President Joe Biden visiting Israel next month (July 13-15). Bennett reassured US Secretary of State Antony Blinken he will back Lapid, his Office said in a statement on Wednesday. Blinken thanked Bennett for helping strengthen US-Israel relations whilst in office. “Blinken underscored our respect for the democratic processes and reiterated our unwavering commitment to the strong U.S.-Israel strategic relationship,” said State

EJA Jewish life study revealed in Budapest BY DAVID SAFFER
The European Jewish Association has released a revealing study about Jewish life in Europe at the annual conference of Jewish communities in Budapest. Research of 12 countries where most European Jews live included the fight against anti-Semitism, security of the Jewish community, promoting Jewish culture and how a state votes regarding Israel at the UN. Italy and Hungary topped a ‘quality of life’ listing, United Kingdom came fourth. Poland and Belgium ranked bottom. Jews in Denmark and Hungary felt ‘most secure’, Hungary had the lowest number of Jews experiencing ‘antisemitic attacks’. Security of French Jews was the most challenging though France has taken the most steps to ensure existence of a Jewish community. Germany and Austria topped European governments benefiting Jewish communities, the UK listed eighth. Spain and Belgium were last. The survey came 24 hours after elections in France saw a rise of populism from the extreme left and right. Joel Mergui, Chairman of the Consistoire of Paris, the largest Jewish community in Europe said, “Despite the positive measures taken by the government, French Jews do not feel secure. We need to fight antisemitism and antizionism not only on the level of govt but more on the level of the population. We need to appoint a national coordinator specifically on antisemitism and not only on racism and xenophobia.” Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs Nachman Shai addressed delegates from Jerusalem. "Israel is open to dialogue and fair criticism,” he said. “This is part of the normal interactions in the global arena. But antisemitic expressions or physical attacks that use anti-Israel rhetoric to mask themselves are unacceptable and intolerable. We must not forget that Israel was created by the Diaspora. We are one family and we take care of every Jewish community, large or small. We must work together to make sure that Jews, wherever they live, will feel part of the global Jewish family. This has always been a big pillar of the survival of the Jewish people throughout history.” Rabbi Menachem Margolin, EJA chairman, said the aim of the study was not to clash, embarrass or campaign against a government but create a comparative scientific infrastructure of Jewish life for community leaders and government heads to establish practical steps to overcome challenges. Rabbi Margolin explained issues where a government appears to listen to Jewish community needs but does not ensure its development. “Belgium is a country where the inhabitants are generally satisfied, but when you go into details, you see that the country does the least for the continuation of Jewish life in Europe compared to all other European countries,” he noted. “The Belgian government, which holds the last place in the study, significantly reduced security around the Jewish communities without even
consulting them, banned kosher slaughter and threatened the issue of circumcision, did not appoint a coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism and more.” There was hope though, Rabbi Margolin observed, “The positive point is that of all 12 countries surveyed, they all score above 60. There is not a single country in the ‘red zone’ indicating a tangible danger to the life of the Jewish community in the near term. It is certainly a good worthy infrastructure for improvement and upgrade despite the political and social challenges.” Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjeen congratulated Jewish leaders and European politicians who attended the conference. “Hungary has zero tolerance toward antisemitism,” he explained. “The lessons of the Holocaust are part of the curriculum in our schools and Holocaust denial in the country is unacceptable.” Regarding Israel, Semjen, said, “We don’t like double standards and quite often some EU members adopt a double standards policy when it comes to Israel.” Semjen condemned Belgium for banning ritual slaughter. “Animal rights should not be put above the right of religious minorities to freely practice their religion,” he noted. Rabbi Shomo Koves, Chief Rabbi of the Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities, commenting on the study, said, “Over the past few years Hungarian Jews have felt the situation improve and we are glad to see that the EJA study supports our feelings. Rigorous cooperation between the Jewish community and Hungarian government in recent times has yielded immediate and direct improvements in security, including constitutional and legislative changes and a police focus on handling antisemitic incidents, among other measures. “At the same time the Jewish community and government are working hand in hand to improve the negative attitudes and opinions in the Hungarian society at large towards Jews. This effort includes continual review of educational content, done in collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Hungary’s Jewish communities and the Action and Protection League, the leading NGO responsible for fighting antisemitism.” Koves added, “The fact that responsibility for constructing the permanent exhibit of the new Holocaust Museum was fully handed over to the Jewish community proves a commitment to act and bring change for the long term through government and community partnerships.” Deputy Minister of Interior of Greece, Stavros Kalafatis, said Greeks share with Israeli brother’s painful moments that “shook humanity in the darkest pages of world history”. “One in 20 Europeans have never heard of the Holocaust and those who survived are now too old or no longer among us to describe the horrors they experienced,” he lamented. “It is a duty to keep the memory alive and to send a lasting message of teaching against intolerance and fanaticism.” On the gala eve, the Minister of the

Turkey terror attack warning still in place BY DAVID SAFFER
A terror attack warning against Israelis in Istanbul remains in place a week on from initial government concerns. Some 2,000 Israelis are believed to be in Turkey. There were 5,000 last week. Disturbing reports emerged over the weekend of a terror cell aiming to murder or kidnap Israeli tourists. Israeli media gave accounts of Israelis being taken to the airport without belongings with Iranian operatives waiting in hotel rooms. Government officials have advised cancellation of travel plans. The National Security Council has told Israelis to immediately leave Istanbul but if tourists are in hotels they must not open doors to room service, hotel maintenance or deliveries and be aware of suspicious persons in public areas. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid is due to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu today.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Monday that joint Israeli-Turkish efforts had stopped attacks on Israelis but a threat was still present. “There’s an ongoing campaign in Turkey and a threat looming over Israelis in Turkey,” he told a press conference. “We are working there on many different angles to keep our citizens safe. Along with calling on Israeli nationals to avoid flying to Turkey, especially Istanbul, we are also working closely with Turkish authorities to thwart attempts to harm Israelis and Jews. “The operational efforts together with the Turkish security apparatus bore fruit. In recent days we have foiled a number of attempted attacks and arrested several terrorists on Turkish soil.” Bennett said at his weekly cabinet meeting, “We are currently witnessing Iranian attempts to attack Israelis in various overseas locations. We will continue to strike those who send the terrorists and those who send those who send them. Our new

rule is: Whoever sends pays.” He added, “We have warned Israeli citizens to avoid flying to Turkey, especially Istanbul, at this time if it is not necessary. The danger is still great. I call on the citizens of Israel to show personal responsibility and safeguard their security.” Bennett thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for cooperating with

Jerusalem “on all levels”. “We will keep working together with the aim of bringing the situation back to normal and bringing Israeli tourists back to Turkey as soon as possible,” he said. President Isaac Herzog said counterterror efforts should continue with Turkey. And he thanked Erdogan for his efforts to prevent an attack.

23 JUNE 2022 “The two leaders highlighted the great contribution of this cooperation to the trust being built between the governments and nations,” noted a statement from Herzog’s office. Defence Minister Benny Gantz briefed the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee outlining different responses including potential targets to attack. “The State of Israel faces significant strategic challenges,” he explained. “From an operational standpoint and in terms of urgency, the biggest challenge that we face, is the Iranian threat. “In recent months, we have seen two significant achievements bringing the international community together to face the Iranian threat. The first is in keeping the IRGC on the ‘FTO’ list of terror organisations. The second is the IAEA’s condemnation of Iran regarding its noncompliance with investigations and inspections. “These issues demonstrate once again that Iran is not a partner. In order to achieve a nuclear agreement that will push Iran back from its ambitions, the entire world, led by the United States, must employ political, economic and military pressure.” Biden noted an extensive programme with the Pentagon to strengthen cooperation between Israel and countries in the region. Gantz will advance options during President Joe Biden’s forthcoming visit to Israel next month. Israel is building the ‘Middle East Air Defense Alliance’ (MEAD) to counter Iran. “This programme is already operative and has already enabled the successful interception of Iranian attempts to attack Israel and

I call on Israeli citizens to follow the defence establishment’s instructions.” Gantz added, “We have a variety of options at our disposal, any harm to Israeli citizens will lead us to employ these means.” Bicom noted that Turkey is a popular destination with Israeli tourists. “This latest threat has seen strong cooperation between Israel and Turkish intelligence and security services,” noted a spokesman. “For Turkey, tourism is a crucial sector of their economy, and it has a vested interest to prevent any attack.” They added, “The warning is expected to remain in place until the terror cell has been arrested or intelligence confirms they have left Turkey.” Israel issued its highest travel warning of a “real threat” to Israelis in Turkey last week. Bennett said Israel would unleash its full power to protect its citizens abroad. And Lapid told Israelis to leave the country “as soon as possible” following Iranian threats to Israeli interests. Istanbul had an alert rating of four with Iran, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso. The NSC called on Israelis to avoid traveling to Turkey and destinations bordering Iran following high-profile deaths that Tehran blames on Israel. They also increased issued guidelines including contact with strangers, drawing attention to nationality, providing personal details particularly army service and Israeli diplomat phone numbers.

A specially charted plane has flown 160 Ethiopian Jews to Israel this week. Operation Tzur Yisrael (Rock of Israel) landed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Tuesday. Two flights brought 340 olim to Israel in recent weeks. Phase one of the operation included 2,000 Jews last December. The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem sponsored the flight. ICEJ has enabled 2,750 Ethiopia Jews to immigrate to Israel since 2015. “The Christian Embassy is privileged to help with the historic gathering of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel in our day, we are especially committed to standing in support of the Ethiopian Aliyah,” said ICEJ President Dr. Jurgen Buhler. “The Jews of

Around 95,000 Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel since the 1980s when 8,000 were part of Operation Moses through the Sudan. In 1991, 14,000 immigrants arrived in Operation Solomon, then in 2013, The Jewish Agency set up Operation Dove’s Wings for 7,000 Ethiopian Jews. Operation Tzur Yisrael is set to bring 5,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel this year.

CER backs Shechita vote in Belgium BY LILLY JOSEPH
Conference of European Rabbis has welcomed Brussels Regional Parliament voting to maintain Shechita in the region last Friday. Parliament’s general assembly voted 42 to 38 with eight abstentions after a parliamentary committee overruled a ban on ritual slaughter proposed by Minister for Animal Welfare, Bernard Clerfayt earlier this month. CER is in full agreement with the ruling to declare Shechita and Halal legal. The Jewish and Muslim community of Wallonia and Flanders imports meat as nonstunned slaughter was ruled illegal in 2020. CER President Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt paid tribute to Chief Rabbi Guigui and Rabbi Bruno Fiszon for their efforts. “Bans in Flanders and Wallonia blatantly trample on religious freedoms of the Jewish and Muslim communities affecting hundreds of thousands of Belgium citizens,” he
said. “These unsolicited bans have a dark historical precedent. Rather than ushering in a future of increased animal welfare, these alarmingly legislative prohibitions are instead a harsh, destructive step backwards. The law should never be used as an unsolicited weapon against religious communities. The vote of the Brussels regional Parliament, declaring that these religious methods of slaughter are not illegal restores such religious rights in the country.” Shimon Cohen, Shechita UK Campaign Director added, "Previous bans in Wallonia and Flanders greatly inhibited the religious Jewish communities in those areas, blatantly and worryingly disregarding their religious freedoms.” He added, “In order for a country to be said to value and adhere to human rights, they must, by definition, allow Jewish religious communities to maintain their religious lifestyle.” Cohen said that the ruling was a signal to
the Wallonia and Flanders regions to “repeal their bans” and restore religious rights in Belgium. Legislative powers in Belgium are split into national, regional and community areas. Jewish leaders blasted the European Court of Justice's 2020 verdict on Shechita in Wallonia and Flanders. Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt said the impact on Belgium Jews on the judgement and said it brought Belgium into line with a few countries whose bans on Shechita date from the Nazi era. He noted, "The impact is immense and the effect detrimental to Belgian Jews." Cohen said the ruling was a “missed opportunity” to right a wrong and sent a disturbing signal to Belgian Jews. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder added that the ruling placed a “potentially terminal obstacle” to continued Jewish communal life in Europe.

CPS chief meets BoD Chief Crown Prosecutor for London South, Lionel Idan, has apologised to the Board of Deputies for incidents falling short in prosecuting antisemitic hate crimes. Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl, Michael Wegier and Daniel Sugarman met Idan last week. They discussed a number of cases where the Jewish community viewed the CPS had failed. The latest was a religiously aggravated assault against a man alleged to have carried out a string of assaults against Jewish people in August 2021. Following complaints, charges were reinstated. After the meeting, Ms van de Zyl said, "Mr Idan wholeheartedly apologised for the incidents in question”. She added that the CPS would facilitate introductions for the Board to organise meetings between local CPS hate crime leads and local Jewish representatives around the country. Idan welcomed participating in a Q&A event with the Board to the wider Jewish community.

NJA condemn Human Rights Council The Human Rights Council has ignored calls from western nations including Britain to cease its objective of singling out Israel says The National Jewish Assembly. The Council met in Geneva earlier this month for a Committee of Inquiry on Israel. The result was the demonisation of the Jewish State according to NJA. Human rights lawyer for NGO Monitor in Jerusalem, Anne Herzberg, flew to London from Geneva to address a joint meeting of Report (UK), the UK charitable arm of NGO Monitor, and the NJA. Herzberg described to the gathering how
UNHRC operates. Of 80 NGOs with UN status in Geneva, five are pro-Israel. She also told them that commissioners are elected based on criticism of Israel. At one meeting, Herzberg was refused re-entry unless she called Israel an “apartheid state”. The bodies collect “evidence”, so courts, including the international court in the Hague prosecute leading Israeli figures using UN reports, explained NJA, who recognise a coordinated attack from the UNHRC, Amnesty International and other human rights groups including some based
in Israel. NJA noted the purpose was to isolate Israel and reshape the agenda by influencing the media, politicians and general public, especially university students, that the Jewish State is a ‘wicked’ nation. “As usual there are no words about Palestinian Hamas rockets, no condemnation of Palestinian terror attacks and no comment on Palestinian incitement and indoctrination,” an NJA spokesperson said. Steve Winston, NJA vice chairman, described UNHRC as having been “hijacked by member states, many of whom are serial violators of human rights themselves”. He added, “They are obsessed with the demonisation of Israel and this latest warped attempt to promote more false and malicious narratives will not bring any positive change for the Palestinian people”. NJA continued, “Many of the western nations including Britain, USA, Canada, Germany and most of Europe refused to be part of this UNHRC sham. Sadly, Ireland felt it necessary to support the anti-Israel agenda.”

Steinmeier defends Israel Germany President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called on Documenta 15 art show organisers to fight antisemitism allegations surrounding the event. The international show in Kassel takes place every five years and is curated this time by the Indonesian group Ruangrupa. The group are accused of inviting organisations that back a boycott of Israel. Steinmeier said at the official opening that “there are limits” to what artists can do in addressing political issues. “As justified as some criticism of Israeli policies, such as the building of settlements is, recognising Israeli statehood means recognising the dignity and security of the modern Jewish community,” he noted. “As Germany’s President I say, recognising Israel is the basis and condition for debate here.”

The Jewish Agency has appointed Maj. Gen. (Res.) Doron Almog chairman for the next four years. Almog succeeds President Issac Herzog in the prestigious post and is expected to take up his role in September. He served as Commander of the Southern Command and has been a torchbearer for Israel’s Independence Day for his contribution to the development of the Negev. Almog said, “I am proud and excited about the trust and election. I am grateful to the people of the Agency and its leaders who work day and night to strengthen the Jewish people and the State of Israel. By working together, we will ignite flame and pride in our work for a future of hope for future generations.” “This is a very important position in the
Jewish world, which works to connect the State of Israel to Jewish communities around the world," noted Herzog. “It has great impact on Israeli society, and on processes of immigration and absorption of Jews into Israel. I am certain that Almog’s abilities, experience and skillset will lead this important organization forward.” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett congratulated Almog. “He exemplifies military and civilian heroism, a deep love for the Jewish people, the land and every person as he or she is,” said Bennett. “This is also the reason why I was pleased to be the one who awarded him the Israel Prize for his life's work. I wish Doron great success in connecting the Jewish people to the State of Israel, and in raising Israel's stature in the world." Yaakov Hagoel, who chairs the Nominating Committee, added, “I am confident
that he will lead The Jewish Agency with the same dedication and determination with which his predecessors in this position acted.” Board of Governors chairman, Michael Siegal, commented, “I am sure he will promote the important mission before us to keep the Jewish people connected to each other and to Israel.” The Board of Governors are expected to approve the appointment at a vote of the Opening Plenary on July 10 in Jerusalem. The Nominating Committee consists of senior leadership of the Zionist movement. Chairman of the Adi Negev-Nahalat Eran Rehabilitation Village, named after his son Eran, who died from Castleman’s disease, Almog was awarded the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement to Society and the State in 2016. He is currently chairman of the Israel Security Award Committee.

CAA criticise Corbyn over antisemitism BY ADAM MOSES
Campaign Against Antisemitism have criticised Jeremy Corbyn’s defiant attitude over institutional antisemitism in Labour in an interview with Declassified UK. In a candid article the former Labour leader described allegations that he is antisemitic as “foul, dishonest, utterly disgusting and appalling”. Defending his stance, Corbyn said he had spent his life fighting racism as his parents fought the rise of Nazism in Britain. “Somehow or other I was accused of being anti-Semitic,” he told the magazine. “People that have known me for 40 years, never once complained about anything I’d ever said or done in terms of anti-racism, until I became leader of the Labour Party.” He added, “I’ll be forever grateful for the support given by Jewish socialists, the many Jewish members
of the Labour Party all over the country, and of course the local Jewish community in my constituency.” Regarding antisemitism allegations, Corbyn added, “It was personal, it was vile, it was disgusting, and it remains so.” CAA Head of Political Investigations Joe Glasman however, dismissed Corbyn’s comments. “He remains defiant and unrepentant when it comes to the institutional antisemitism of the Labour Party under his watch and his own antisemitism. Despite the findings of the EHRC, and despite the complaints made by us against him, and despite his brief suspension from the Party and ongoing suspension from the Parliamentary Labour Party, he continues to refuse to accept the scale of the problem or his responsibility for it. Mr Corbyn has not learned a thing. “Given that Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that
Jeremy Corbyn
anyone who holds views such as these ‘should be nowhere near the Labour Party’, it is time for Mr Corbyn to go. We have previously called for Mr Corbyn to be expelled by the Labour Party. We reiterate that call today.” CAA reported that Declassified UK characterised antisemitism assertions against Corbyn as a “tried-and-tested tactic used by pro-Israel groups across the world”, a “slur” and a tactic “instrumentalised to destroy critics of the Israeli state”. Corbyn reportedly said, “The tactic is you say that somebody is intrinsically antisemitic and it sticks and then the media parrot it and repeat it the whole time. Then the abuse appears on social media, the abusive letters appear, the abusive phone calls appear, and all of that.” Aspects in the interview, CAA added, were close to tropes regarding Israeli influence,

control of British politics and the Labour Party. Corbyn questioned Labour Friends of Israel funding, why Labour didn’t act against LFI and claims that former Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he should not become Prime Minister. Regarding the latter, CAA stated that there is no evidence Netanyahu made the comment though Declassified UK may have assumed Corbyn referred to a 2019 British newspaper report where Netanyahu reportedly said that Israel “may halt its intelligence co-operation with the UK if Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister”. CAA noted, “What Mr Netanyahu actually said is therefore entirely different from the impression of attempted Israeli domination of British democracy that Mr Corbyn tried to give.”
Am Yisrael Chai join search for teenager Moishe BY ADAM MOSES
Am Yisrael Chai Fund is offering NIS 50k for ‘concrete’ information to find missing teenager Avraham Moshe (Moishe) Kleinerman of Modi’in Illit. Ami Magazine have pledged $10k along with two private $27.5k donations to aid the search. Public pressure and media interviews with 16-year-old Moishe’s parents have resulted in Israel Police increasing the search for the missing Chareidi teen. A special investigative team has been formed at the Crime Investigation Unit. Police have said Moishe’s disappearance was reported on April 2nd. Large-scale searches of the Meron area have so far been unsuccessful. To complicate matters there have been unsubstantiated reports that Moishe was seen at Kerestir, Hungary last month. Moishe’s mother Gitty has reportedly said he always told his family where he was going. She has criticised police efforts and pleaded with authorities to “bring Moishy home”. “He went for Shabbos Mevorchim Nissan to Meron and said he was travelling with friends and because he didn’t have a phone he gave the number of a friend and said he would be in touch,” she said. “His friends were in shock, they don’t know what happened. They said that on Motzaei Shabbos
Avraham Moshe (Moishe) Kleinerman
he went out with someone but we don’t really know what happened.” Kleinerman’s father thanked everyone try to find his son. “It is impossible to describe the difficulty and worry, we can’t breathe or sleep, every phone call makes us jump, it is terrible,” he reportedly said. Am Yisrael founder Shmuel Sackett visited Kleinerman’s parents and promised to help.
“I saw the video of the parents and I cried,” he said. “But I didn’t want to just cry and daven, as important as that is, I wanted to do something else. My foundation will give NIS 50,000 to anyone who provides concrete information leading to finding Avraham Moshe alive and well.” Police have struggled to establish a breakthrough in the case. “So far there hasn’t been any leads that
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
can focus the search teams in a certain area, which renders the searches much more difficult and spread over many areas in Israel,” a police statement said. “Israel Police will continue to act to bring Moishe back to his family as soon as possible.” Modiin Illit commander, Deputy Superintendent Alon Kalfon, confirmed widespread searches to date including with military units in springs, mikvaos, shuls and kivrei tzaddikim. “We’re collecting evidence, locating cameras, cell phones, tracing back to the moment he went missing and prior to that,” noted Kalfon. “We’re contacting people he’s met over the years in order to find any connection that can lead to a place we can search and find him.” He added, “We’re in constant touch with the family and we’ve formed a close bond with them. We’re continuing to search for him and we’ll continue to search until we find him.” Moishe’s uncle Chaim Hanelfling has met with MKs including Uriel Busso (Shas) and Itamar Ben-Gvir (Religious Zionist) at the Knesset to appeal for help in the case. The public has been asked to daven for Avraham Moshe ben Gittel. Since its inception in 2001, AYC Fund has supported agriculture, infrastructure and citizens of Israel. Projects include Israel’s K-9 Dog unit, a Widow and Orphan fund, Build Up Israel Project, Teens at-risk, Pesach fund and Global Aliyah Revolution.

North’s cue bid of two spades promised a limit raise or better in hearts, since an immediate 3h bid would have been pre-emptive. West began with the ace of spades and followed with the king of spades, which declarer ruffed. After drawing the trumps in two rounds ending in dummy, declarer ruffed dummy’s remaining spade to eliminate that suit from his combined hands. Declarer saw that crossing back to dummy leading towards the king of clubs would be a weak move, relying entirely on the ace of clubs being onside. Instead, declarer decided to combine his chances in the minors. His first move was to cash the king and ace of diamonds in that order. When he led a third round of diamonds towards his hand East followed with a low card and the decision point of the deal was reached. After a little thought, declarer decided to finesse the ten of diamonds. When this won declarer discarded a club on the queen on the ace of diamonds, crossed to dummy with a trump and led a club to the king. West cashed two club tricks but the contract was safe. “That was a lucky guess in diamonds,” West commented. “Not at all,” said South. “If the ten of diamonds had lost to your jack, you would have been endplayed. You would have been forced to lead a club or give a ruff and- discard and either way I would have made the contract. So, it wasn’t a guess; it was a finesse that was certain to win, even if it lost.

Milly Days welcome GIFT families for a magical day Last week the charity Milly Days welcomed over a hundred GIFT recipient families to an exquisite day out at a stunning riverside property on the banks of the Thames in Buckinghamshire. Gina Edwards, Head of Milly Days explained “Our organisation has been going for 10 years and we do roughly 10 parties a season. We invite charities to join a garden party day on the grounds of a private home on the river. We choose our charities and we spoil them for the day. We offer boat rides, swimming, and depending on the group, we cater for them. We might get farm animals or entertainers in. Our theory is that people who have a tough time, from all sorts of walks of life, whether it’s abuse or cancer, need a boost. We bring them down to a place that they can call their own for a day and use our facilities. They get coffee, lunch strawberries, ice cream and going home bags because no party is ever complete without a going home bag! We just want them to have great memories so when they are sitting there in tough times they have memories that will make them smile. We had GIFT here for the first time and it was a totally memorable day, to see the smiles on these kids’ faces and to see the appreciation from the people. We got some beautiful texts afterwards and it makes Milly Days’ work worth it. We loved having GIFT down, they were a fantastic match, the people, the gratitude, they had tears of happiness and you can’t ask for more than that.”

Everything was so effortlessly well-organised, comfortable and safe, the food was delicious and generosity of the individual gifts for each child as well as the Milly Day goodie bags unbelievable. Every single one of the team were so warm and caring towards our families. The feedback from the parents has been moving beyond words. It felt so good that the kids could just be kids with smiles on their faces. From my eldest to the youngest they said it was the best day ever. They are drinking hot chocolate in their Milly mugs and are all carrying around their toys with the biggest smile. I have never seen them have so much joy!! The kids already asking to go back. A British Emunah supporter has raised over £5,000 by running 70 miles for her 70th birthday. Jean Shindler of Finchley is a member of New North London Synagogue and undertook the Jean (centre) with her family fundraiser in memory of her sister, Anna Finchas, who was 60. She said: “Anna was a great supporter of Emunah and participated in all the sponsored treks that were arranged around the UK. Our father wanted to create a project in her memory.” The Anna Finchas Art Therapy Centre was opened at Emunah children’s home in Afula, Israel following her passing.
“This was particularly appropriate as Anna herself had been an artist,” said Jean. “Visiting the home on a number of occasions, and meeting many of the students, I saw for myself the wonderful work that Emunah does in supporting at-risk and vulnerable children and families in Israel.” Jean used her ‘Couch to 5k’ app to run 70 miles and raise money for the art therapy centre. She said, “I am supporting a remarkable charity but also feel my darling sister is with me in celebrating a landmark birthday.” Donations: www.emunah.org.uk/donate/ jean-shindler-70-miles-for-70-years

Siddur Lakol - ‘A Siddur for Everyone’ - features clear print with simplified translations and transliteration of core prayers. A focus is on the Kabbalat Shabbat Service. The siddur features Friday prayers of many Jewish schools and will be produced in A4 and A5 format to support people with a range of disabilities. Large font sizes help people with visual challenges, a larger edition may help people finding it difficult to hold or read smaller siddurim. The Picture Exchange Communication System are graphic icons to help those with autism spectrum conditions. All tefillot and songs appear with matching PECS (icons). The United Synagogue is making available explanatory videos so Rabbinic, service and school leaders can be familiar with techniques for best practice and provision of inclusivity services. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis hopes the publication will prompt a community-wide conversation to ensure every aspect of Jewish life is accessible to all. Introducing the new siddur, he said, “All our children are exceptionally precious in our eyes, we have a responsibility to ensure that our Judaism is accessible to all, so that

each one will attain their own full personal potential. School, said that the siddur gave all children access to Jewish faith through prayer. Hadassa Kessler, Kisharon’s Director of operations and development noted, “People with learning disabilities will be able to follow the service, connecting with Shabbat prayers and melodies sung every week making synagogue attendance, or even prayer at home, more engaging and meaningful.” She added, “Siddur Lakol is a big leap into making shuls and communities more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities, who so often have been sidelined and their needs not understood or
accommodated. One of the highest risks for people with learning disabilities is loneliness, and to try to prevent this we want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to be part of their community, to make friends and build relationships, and to celebrate occasions together.” “Siddur Lakol is nice, printed well and something new for Kisharon,” said Eli Cohen, a tenant at Kisharon. “It’s good for people who don’t understand or can’t read, because you can understand with the pictures. My friend, who lives in my house, can use it to say Shema before he goes to sleep, if he wants to.” The siddur introduces accessible language to the wider community, and it is hoped more organisations will start to use Easy Read or PECS in their newsletters, leaflets and job applications, to make accessible to neurodivergent people. Deborah Gundle, a JWeb founder, is a mother of a special need child. She is hopeful the siddur will be used to enjoy prayers at home, online and in synagogues. Jacqui Zinkin, US Trustee, said the siddur took its place amongst a suite of US publications. “It serves as a way to educate the wider community, to learn about those with individual differences, thereby promoting respect, understanding and inclusion amongst members and congregants,” she noted. The siddur is supported by the Daniels family from Pinner United Synagogue to honour the life of Sonya Daniels who was passionate about Judaism and education including working with children with diverse educational needs in school.

18 COMMUNITY
After Covid – The Future of Jewish Education in the UK In the summer of 2021 LSJS partnered with UJIA to set up working groups across the Jewish Education sector looking at how the community could ensure Jewish education could build back better after Covid. After the initial meeting, which bought together educational leaders across the community spectrum, five working groups were set up to explore different areas. Last Tuesday over 60 participants and other stakeholders arrived at LSJS to hear about the draft report which has pulled together the findings, and critically, outlined recommendations for what needs to happen next. Joanne Greenaway, Chief Executive LSJS says “It was so exciting to come together to launch this report to which so many experts have contributed. We are grateful for the engagement right across the community in this important project and look forward to the impact it will have. Our sector is under-resourced yet so critical and we hope this paves the way for greater collaboration, more experimentation in the sector, more focus on the family context, more emphasis on placing the learner at the centre of their own education, more value placed on the teachers and educators who we entrust with our children and greater investment in them.” Mandie Winston, Chief Executive at UJIA says “This has been an important community conversation that has brilliantly captured the challenges and opportunities

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com IS FAITH FOR FOOLS? Dear Rabbi I was having a conversation with someone about faith. I know it is the underlying theme of every religion, but don’t you think it is a little outdated? How would you describe faith and in what way do you believe faith is still relevant in the 21st century? Sebastian Dear Sebastian For me, faith consists of believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. You don’t know how it will happen, but you just know that it will. In fact you might say faith is like WiFi: It’s invisible but it has the power to connect you to what you need. The problem is that many people think that faith is silly. They think that their habitual and knee jerk doubt and scepticism are more realistic. They don’t realise that optimistic faith is often the only normal way for people to move forward and achieve great things. We don’t live by the things that we doubt, but through the things that we believe. Christopher Columbus doubted many of the old assumptions about geography, but these doubts did not make him great. His greatness came from the positive beliefs which he confidently held and on which he launched his spectacular adventure. In the mid-1960s Fred Smith was a business student at Yale. He doubted that the delivery service in America would suffice in the coming computerised information age. Smith wrote an economics term paper about his doubts, and on the need
for a new, reliable overnight delivery in a computerized age. His professor sympathized with his doubts but was less than impressed with Smith’s idea for a business and responded: “The concept is interesting and wellformed, but in order to earn better than a ‘C’, the idea must be feasible.” With a combination of innovative thinking, unbridled faith and sheer determination, Smith went ahead and started his unfeasible business, FedEx, the world’s first overnight delivery company and changed the transportation industry forever. The last I heard, FedEx, was a very feasible business - with more than $83.95 billion in revenue in 2021. To be sure, doubt has real value in life. It clears away the rubbish and stimulates the search for truth. It’s the starting point, to feed into the ensuing faith in order to cultivate growth. But it has no value unless it is finally complemented and consumed by optimistic faith. Both the Yale professor and Smith had doubts about the old delivery service. But only Smith had faith. And it is ultimately that faith which enriches life. If Columbus was just left doubting geography, there may have never been a New York or a Nevada. And if Smith remained entrenched in his doubts about the delivery service in America, we might still be using delivery pigeons or banana boats.

On an initial first visit they inquired of a particularly rich man whether they could stay there. The man refused and so they stayed by someone else – Reb Aharon, whom as it happens was a very holy and pious Jew. It was some time later when these two great brothers were discovered – when the eminence of these two luminaries and giants in Israel became known. They happened to be travelling to this same town again and the aforementioned rich man sent for them to come stay by him. The new horses and fancy buggies that were arranged by the community – they sent those onto him. But they went on foot back to Reb Aharon’s house. The Spies and How to Act BY SIVAN RAHAV-MEIR
Parashat Shelach Lecha is one of the most fascinating parashot. Moshe sends twelve spies to scout the Land of Israel before the Jewish people enter it, a representative from each tribe, the elite leaders of the entire nation. Unfortunately, upon their return there was tremendous disappointment. Two spies were for entering the land and ten against! We know that in a democracy the majority decides, but in this case, regarding a religious and cultural ruling, the majority was wrong. Because of Am Yisrael’s crying and moaning that night, our Sages tell us that the spies’ sin continued to accompany Am Yisrael for forty years in the wilderness and even accompanies us until today. This is because this occurrence wasn’t a one-off mistake but a sin that has a past, present and future. What does all this mean? What really
happened with the spies? How did they fall so low and what does it mean that their sin exists until today? This parasha provides us with a revolutionary definition of a rasha, a wicked person. Outwardly, it’s hard to differentiate a rasha from a tzaddik, a righteous person, since they can appear similar to each other. So, can we tell a rasha just from his actions? Rashi asks, “Why is the section dealing with the spies put in juxtaposition with the section dealing with Miriam’s punishment? To show the grievousness of the spies’ sin: because she (Miriam) was punished on account of the slander which she uttered against her brother, and these sinners witnessed it and yet they did not take a lesson from her.” When Miriam was punished for speaking lashon hara (slander) against her brother Moshe and his wife Tzipporah, she was punished with leprosy. The entire camp knew about Miriam’s sin, prayed for her
recovery and waited for her to heal before they moved on. It was big news at the time! This episode had barely passed, and certainly was not yet forgotten when the spies sinned with their report from Eretz Yisrael, once again with the sin of lashon hara. What’s going on here? How is it possible that the spies sinned with lashon hara, exactly the same sin for which Miriam was severely punished, when they knew and saw all she experienced? So, who is a wicked person? To quote Rashi above, it’s someone who “witnessed it and yet they did not take a lesson from her.” When things occur around us, we need to look deeper and ask ourselves how it affects us? Not from the egotistical point of view of “what do I feel?” but rather “how can I improve myself and my surroundings after seeing this?” If one sees wicked actions one must make sure not to fall into the same pit. Conversely, if one sees good actions one has to ask oneself, “how can I
relate to this and play my part?” We cannot allow events to pass us by and remain apathetic without internalizing what’s happening. The two tzaddikim (righteous people) in this parasha, Yehoshua and Calev, were successful in their mission as spies since they acted in the exact opposite way to the wicked. They saw what was going on around them but chose to stand up against the majority, against the crowd. They wanted to do what was right, not what the majority wanted to hear. With their words טוֹ ָבה ָה ָא ֶרץ ְמאֹד ְמאֹד, “the Land is an exceedingly good Land”, they actually saved the Jewish nation. Instead of returning to Egypt or dying off in the wilderness, they saved our legacy. In their merit, the Jewish nation entered the Land of Israel, the exceedingly good land, where, with G-d’s help and grace, we live and prosper to this day. Sivan Rahav-Meir is the World Mizrachi Scholar-in-Residence and an Israeli journalist and lecturer.
Parshat Shelach Lecha:
Wearing Strings and Tassels BY GAVRIEL COHN
Tzitzit seems like a strange mitzvah. The Torah commands us to tie strings onto the corners of our clothes and dangle a thread of blue wool, techelet, amongst these cords “in order to remember all of the commandments and perform them.” Some of the commentators propose that the number of knots and cords hint in one way or another to the 613 mitzvot (Rashi; Ramban; Baal haTurim). Others explain that in times gone by, people would tie knots in pieces of string in order to remember something; so tzitzit were simply Biblical post-it notes or todo lists, reminding us to keep the mitzvot (Riva). Another school of thought understands tzitzit to be a uniform of sorts, these distinctive tasselled garments mark us out as servants of G-d (Tosfot; Bechor Shor). Yet, very tentatively, from the story of Sefer Bamidbar, there might be another
way of understanding what tzitzit are about. In the desert, the Jewish People lived with such impressive, regal order, following the cloud of G-d and the call of the trumpets in an almost military formation. As a collective, they were structured and disciplined and their lives revolved, quite literally, around G-d. The tribes surrounded the Mishkan, “the house where G-d’s glory dwelt.” Throughout the Torah we find that great peril is associated with G-d’s Sanctuary and Temple. Whenever someone recklessly rushes too close to Transcendence or encounters the Divine Presence without the required preparations or mindset, his life is in danger. With great holiness comes sheer power and presence that can overwhelm a mortal human being. Only the Kohanim, priestly families trained in the correct procedures, could perform the sacred duties in G-d’s House. When the People wanted to move stations in the desert, the Kohanim would first cover the Mishkan and its vessels in covers and skins before the Levi’im could carry them, so
that “the Levi’im not touch the Sanctuary and die.” Many of these holy vessels were covered in “cloths of techelet.” A striking similarity to tzitzit. Whilst the Jewish People, as a nation, seemed ordered and composed, journeying in formation and encamping around the Mishkan, as we said, as individuals they were the very opposite, fractured and in crisis. They complained about the manna; and craved for the luxuries they had been fed in Egypt. They gorged themselves on meat with no shame. Finally, in our sedra, they were stricken with fear and lost hope in conquering the Land. They rallied against G-d and despaired for themselves, crying and wailing. Then, straight after these episodes, the Torah’s narrative turns to the mitzvah of tzitzit. “They shall make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments… and place a thread of techelet on each corner… in order that you should remember the commandments and be holy.” Perhaps (this is only a suggestion), the mitzvah of tzitzit is meant to be a cover for us as individual human beings just
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
like the techelet cloth covers of the Mishkan vessels. G-d is instructing us that we too are holy, elevated, and transcendent, just like the Sanctuary and its holy objects. That means, however, that, like all things divine, we are fraught with danger and risk. We, as human beings, a mixture of physical and spiritual, have the potential for destruction or harm (as was displayed in our “tests against G-d” throughout Sefer Bamidbar), and must act with consideration and procedure, just like in the Temple and Tabernacle. We need the structure of the mitzvot and the techelet and string covers of tzitzit in order to restrain us and keep us ordered, structured, and regal. Wearing covers of the tzitzit, like the wrappings of the Temple vessels, should enable us to successfully travel onwards and upwards in life.

“It shall be tzitzit for you, that you may see it and remember all of G-d’s mitzvot and perform them” (Bemidbar 15:39)
Sidra Summary
1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 13:1-20
G-d tells Moshe to send spies into Cana’an (later the Land of Israel), one from each tribe. The names of the spies are listed. One of them is Hoshea, whose name is changed by Moshe to Yehoshua (Joshua). Moshe instructs the spies to enter the Land from the south, look at its landscape and assess the strength of its inhabitants. Point to Consider: Why did Moshe specifically instruct them to enter from the south? (see Rashi to 13:17)
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 13:21-14:7
The spies enter the Land. They travel to the valley of Eshkol, where they cut a vine with a cluster of grapes which they carry on poles, as well as figs and pomegranates. After 40 days in the Land, the spies return to share their report and show the people the fruit. Their report begins positively, but then warns of the powerful nations living in the Land and the strength of their fortified cities. Calev, one of the spies, tries to reassure the people

that they will nevertheless conquer the Land. The other spies, except Yehoshua, contradict him, claiming that it is a land “that devours its inhabitants and that all the people are giants”. The people cry all night in response to this report and announce that they would seek a new leader who would take them back to Egypt. Moshe and Aharon despair at the people’s reaction to the spies’ report. Yehoshua and Calev tear their clothes in a sign of mourning, and declare the Land to be “very, very good”.
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 14:8-25
Yehoshua and Calev declare that G-d will ensure the Israelites’ conquest of the Land as long as they do not rebel against Him, but the people threaten to stone them to death. G-d laments the nation’s lack of faith and threatens to destroy them in a plague. Moshe pleads for forgiveness on their behalf, stressing that other nations may claim that it was beyond G-d’s power to bring Israel into the Land. G-d relents, but with a qualification – all those who angered Him will not enter the Land (see next aliya).
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 14:26-15:7
G-d decrees that men currently over the age of 20 will die in the desert over the next 40 years. The spies die in a plague, except Yehoshua and Calev. Moshe tells the nation about the 40-year decree and they mourn. A group of people then try to enter the Land, despite Moshe’s attempts to dissuade them. They are brutally massacred by the Amalekites and
Cana’anites. G-d tells Moshe to instruct the nation that when they bring animal offerings, these should be accompanied by a meal offering (mincha) and a wine libation (nesech).
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 15:8-16
The mitzvah to bring a meal offering and a wine libation extends to all offerings and to all members of the nation.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 15:17-26
When making bread from grain grown in the Land of Israel, one has to take a tithe from the dough (challah). The Torah specifies the offerings that need to be brought if the whole nation accidentally worships idols (Rashi).
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 15:27-31

when people told me that their wedding would start late because that was “Jewish time”, I used to say, “There’s no such thing. I abolished it!” BY RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
JEWISH TIME Q. Why do Jewish events often begin late?
A. We have a word for it – “Jewish time”. When I mentioned this to a Roman Catholic friend, he said, “What are you talking about? It’s called ‘Catholic time’!” I didn’t bother to ask people from other religious faiths because they’d probably tell me there is also “Methodist time” and “Anglican time”. The truth seems to be that some people have a habit of being unpunctual and they blame it on their religion, their political party, etc. Amongst Jews there is even something called “Sephardi time”. Apparently the
Iranian Jewish community used to have a habit of advertising an event for a certain time but starting an hour later, ostensibly to confuse the Adversary – otherwise known as Satan – and to prevent him from affecting the event and the audience with the evil eye. I don’t know how true it is that the Iranians are at fault, but I do know that weddings in Israel almost always start an hour late (strangely, funerals seem to start on time). As a general rule, Judaism insists on promptness and punctuality. Is there is a mitzvah to be done? “Do not let it become stale”, say the sages. “Those who are eager fulfil mitzvot early”, they add. When it is time for prayer, we are told not to keep G-d waiting while we attend to mundane concerns. When we should say an Amen, it should not be left to become an “orphan Amen”. If support is needed by a person or cause, now is the hour. Someone needs to start teaching the virtues of correct timekeeping. Years ago

G-d tells Moshe to teach the nation about the mitzvah of tzitzit (this passage is the third paragraph of the Shema – see green siddur, p.70).
HAFTARAH
The haftarah relates that just before the Israelites enter the Land, Yehoshua sends two spies. They go to Jericho and are hidden by a lady called Rachav, but their hiding place is revealed and she helps them escape. Rachav asks them to promise that when the Land is conquered, she and her family will be spared; the spies agree. The spies bring a favourable report back to Yehoshua.
sages, by three things – they are rachmanim (compassionate), bay’shanim (modest) and gom’lei chassadim (kind). Compassion means feeling for others. Modesty means not being blatant. Kindness means being helpful and supportive. Two of the sages (Avot D’Rabbi Natan chapter 4) were talking about life without a Temple. Rabbi Joshua said that without sacrifices there was no means of atonement. Rabbi Yochanan said that the way to atonement was g’millut chassadim, doing kindly deeds.

Shelach Lecha: Shabbat in the “Fields” or in “Shul”
BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Things were dire. A death sentence was handed down to an entire population. For the next thirty-eight years, they would aimlessly wander through hot desert sands without hope and without future. An unimaginable horror of inescapable death, life slowly ticking away amidst endless dunes. All horizons of hope and of opportunity were shuttered. Overnight, their entire world changed. They woke up to a dark and gloomy world, beyond promise and beyond dreams. That “lost generation” squandered more than just their future. They lost their common narrative. Previously, they shared a common story: selected by Hashem, liberated from two centuries of slavery, they were in transit “on eagles’ wings” to a land of destiny. Whatever their differences, they all shared one common “story”. That common story went up in flames. The desert, once a bridge to a future homeland, now mocked these solitary travelers, missing in time and adrift in history. Everything had to be rebuilt from the ground up. The past had vanished, and the future had to be remodeled.
THE FIRST “SHABBAT MOMENT”
How would they establish new traditions and new meaning? The first test came quickly enough, and it surrounded a flagrant Shabbat violation. Shabbat observance had been a pre-mitzvah, delivered weeks before Sinai, even before mitzvoth became obligatory. It was a “trial” mitzvah selected because of its prehistoric resonance. Ideally, Shabbat observance
would allow the young nation to slowly fashion traditions and religious culture. Observing Shabbat would build durable Jewish identity, capable of outlasting religious infidelity and indiscretion. Sadly, the record of Shabbat observance in the desert wasn’t outstanding. The twentieth chapter of Yechezkel documents widespread and ongoing Shabbat violation. It was so dire that they formed “Shabbat patrols” to police Shabbat in the desert. In the immediate aftermath of the meraglim debacle, these patrols discovered a man violating Shabbat “in the fields”. When most were sitting around the Shabbat table, he was busy in the fields. When most were praying and studying in the mishkan, he was roaming the desert. How would this emergent and rebuilding society respond to this terrible Shabbat desecration? This was a “moment”, and their response would set the tone of their new society. The decisions they took would ripple far beyond this weekend. It would shape their future. Shabbat is that formative.
THE SECOND “SHABBAT MOMENT”
A similar crisis developed a little more than a thousand years later. Once again, we were in rebuild mode. Exiled from Israel for seventy years, we lost many of our national traditions. Returning to Israel and rebuilding the mikdash, we were also in the process of reconstituting national identity. Once again, Shabbat was the cultural and religious pivot, and once again it was being was grossly violated. Apparently, newly emergent societies struggle with Shabbat observance. Without our prior “traditions” and without memories of the
past, Shabbat observance isn’t natural or instinctive. Nechemiah, the prophet was horrified at the scene: Shabbat in Yerushalayim was a bazaar of commerce and tradesmen. Frustrated and terribly worried about the longterm ramifications, he locked the doors of the city, banning merchants from entering, and forcing them to camp outside the city walls until the end of Shabbat. When our traditions become misplaced, Shabbat observance declines. When we lose the continuity of tradition Shabbat suffers. So it was in the lost desert and so it was when we returned from the rivers of Babylon. So it always is, whenever we reboot community, family or identity. Shabbat isn’t a given. But it is formative. It is a social tone-setter. As communities achieve greater Shabbat observance they religiously flourish. Shabbat observance becomes a “mile marker” on the road to communal and religious success. My grandfather left white Russia as a teenager in the 1920’s. He emigrated to Baltimore, which was known as the “Torah town” of the United States. It attracted immigrants serious about Torah and religious life. He attended what was generally regarded as the most religious Synagogue in town. In his Synagogue he launched a club which only attracted a few members. It was known as the “Shomer Shabbat” club! Given the six-day work week in the USA, Shabbat observance was rare. Shabbat is never easy during reboot mode.
OUR “MOMENT”
We are currently in a mini-rebuild. The pandemic radically transformed every aspect of our lives. One of the areas most affected was the Synagogue or shul. Facing a health crisis, we all splintered into smaller minyan -groups conducted in safer outdoor settings. To the surprise of many, we discovered many unforeseen benefits of smaller and more intimate minyanim. We learned a lot about our own prayer habits and desires. The plague appears to have subsided, synagogues have reopened, but not everyone has returned. We are all reconsidering the role of a Synagogue within religious and communal life. These issues are complex and touch at the heart of Jewish identity. This recalibration must be navigated with sensitivity, complexity and nuance. Much of the “conversation” surrounds the role of a synagogue as a site of prayer. Additionally, we are weighing the role of a synagogue in forming community. Are we sufficiently considering the role of a synagogue in creating Shabbat? This is our “moment” and if we don’t get Shabbat right, the consequences will be severe and
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
long-lasting. Shabbat allows us to disconnect from a booming and buzzing world of non-stop “busyness”. Shabbat allows us to reconnect with family, in an era of stressed family relationships. But Shabbat also calls us to higher spiritual ground and to expanded religious consciousness. To get to that higher “place” we must travel “somewhere else”, beyond our homes and beyond our backyards. Shabbat outside of the Synagogue may be relaxing and replenishing, but will it be transcendent? Will it be sacred ground and sacred space? Without a pilgrimage to a different place, will Shabbat become flat? This is a crucial question, and we dare not belittle it or ignore it.
HERITAGE BECOMING LEGACY
Shabbat is a both heritage and legacy. We recall the legends of past Shabbatot and our grandparents’ struggle to observe Shabbat. In our minds we revisit past Shabbatot, which we observed alongside people who no longer walk this Earth. It is a day of common memory and of charming nostalgia. It is a day of stories from our past and traditions from earlier generations. A day of heritage. Can we also sculpt it into a day of legacy? Can we create our own traditions and write new stories that will be retold to later generations? The work week is too busy for story-telling. Shabbat is the day we author our stories and entrench our traditions. Without those stories and without those traditions. religious identity will be brittle. Shabbat is that vital to Jewish identity. It always was, and always will be. So ask yourself this question: prayer can be conducted in backyards and tents. Torah can be studied around private dining rooms. Family time can be enjoyed in upholstered living rooms. Can stories be told, can traditions be forged, can communities be assembled, and can joint narratives be written without a Synagogue? This is our moment, let’s get it right. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. BBQ Pineapple with Coconut Sorbet The flavour of pineapple miraculously changes to become much sweeter when it has either been barbecued or grilled. It goes particularly well with coconut sorbet. Both are quick recipes to make. The sorbet can be made 2 days ahead.
Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
Preparation Time: 15 minutes plus 3 hours freezing Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients For the sorbet 1 tin 400g coconut milk 200g block of creamed coconut 2 egg whites 100g icing sugar 1 tablespoon rum – white rum/ coconut liqueur For the Pineapple 1 large or 2 small pineapples – skin removed and cut into rings For the Garnish 6 strawberries – hulled and sliced Icing sugar 6 sprigs of mint Method 1) Process the coconut milk and creamed coconut together in a food processor. 2) In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff, add the icing sugar a tablespoon at a time and continue to whisk for 1 minute. Add the rum. 3) Combine the two mixtures together by carefully adding 1 tablespoon of egg white followed by the rest. 4) Transfer to a freezer friendly shallow dish.
5) Freeze until frozen (approximately 1 hour), remove and place in the food processor. Whizz together until smooth. Repeat the same process one more time in about 45 minutes or alternatively place in an ice-cream maker. 6) Place the sliced pineapple rings on the hot barbecue, turn after 3 minutes and cook for a further 3 minutes or until golden but not burnt! To serve the stylish Way Remove the sorbet from the freezer 15 minutes before serving. Place 2 cooked pineapple rings onto each individual plate. Spoon the sorbet on top of the pineapple. Garnish with some strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar and a sprig of mint.
BBQ Desserts
Something ‘sweet in the heat’
BY DENISE PHILLIPS
Cook for a final 10 minutes. Delicious.
For those of you cleaning off your BBQs for a weekend grill, do not forget that you can also use your BBQ for desserts. But do not worry, even if the British weather does its usual quick-change act, whatever you decide to make it can always be cooked under the grill in your kitchen.
• Place some sliced chocolate brownies onto a disposable foil tray and heat gently for a few minutes - serve with ice cream and fruit.
Some Tasty BBQ Dessert Ideas • Cut some readymade/ bought lemon or vanilla plain cake into thick wedges. Grill on both sides. The grill marks against the cake are so visually appealing and the warm sightly charred crumb tastes delicious.
• Create summer fruit kebabs using, pineapple, peaches, nectarines, and strawberries. Thread fruits onto BBQ skewers and grill for a few minutes. If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water first to prevent them from burning.
• Sweet Pizza – using a pizza stone or a thick baking tray, add standard pizza dough. (This can be homemade, or shop bought). Grill the base of the pizza on both sides. Remove and spread some Nutella or other chocolate paste, or nut butter, followed by chopped marshmallows and roasted nuts.
And always remember to keep an eye on your BBQ food, the heat is not regulated like an oven, nor can it be turned down quickly! Use thick foil containers, use tongs and oven gloves to prevent burning yourself. Recipe: Grilled Pineapple With Coconut Sorbet
• Grill pineapple rings with a little brown sugar. Top with ice cream or yoghurt and complete with a drizzle of maple syrup or rum.

Shelach Lecha Shelach Lecha Word Search We’re on the edge of Israel, ready to go and finish the job we started in Egypt, be Hashem’s chosen people in our land. But the people are a bit scared. So they tell Moshe they want to send spies? But we have Hashem who not so long ago took us out of Mitzrayim, ten plagues, splitting seas, send us manna every day. We travel with a glowing pillar of heavenly fire and clouds of Glory, how many nisim, miracles does it take to get us to trust Hashem. But Moshe thinks it’ll calm the people, they’ll tell everyone how wonderful it is, they’re the leaders so it’s like when your favourite football player or superhero tells you something is amazing – you buy it.. Hashem tells him to pick one man from each shevet. He chooses, twelve very holy men (no one from Levi). Moshe’s star student Hoshea is going too, Moshe adds a yud – Yehoshua to make up G-d’s name in His for protection. Kalev, the rep from Yehudah/Judah goes to Mearas Hamachpelah for his own prayer for protection by the avot. The problem is that these spies are leaders but they won’t be once they get to Eretz Yisrael. So they’re biased. They don’t realise but they are looking for negative. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a green and beautiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the citizens of the land are giants and warriors “more powerful than we are”; only Kaleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G‑d has commanded.
The people go wild! Moshe tries to remind them that Hashem will do the real fighting but they don’t want to hear it! Then Kalev tries, he yells out, “And that’s not all Moshe did to us!” The crowd listens because they think he’s on their side and will also say lashon harah. But Kalev is good and brave. Moshe split the sea and got the Mann and he will lead us to conquering the land of Israel with Hashem’s help!”Moshe and Yehoshua chime in but it’s too late. The people don’t want to go, they cry all night. Moshe and Aharon daven to Hashem for mercy but it’s far too late. The cloud of glory rises in full view of the whole Klal Yisrael. Hashem says to Moshe, “What does it take for Bnei Yisroel to trust me?.I am ready to wipe them all out and start over with you, Moshe!” But Moshe is selfless, he stands up for his people. Hashem accepts his prayer and won’t kill them… however He decrees that Klal Yisrael’s entry into the Israel shall be delayed forty years plus that entire generation will die out in the desert. A group of remorseful Jews storm the mountain on the border of the Land, and are killed by the Amalekites because they no longer have Hashem’s protection. As part of the deal, the spies who spoke Lashon Hora die a horrible death. Their tongues grow long, worms climb into their tummies and kill them. Hashem wants the children to know that He will take them in so He gives us a few mitzvot that can only be done in Israel like one about Korbonot, taking challah and tzitzit.

The Messy Eater
C
haim sat down happily, ready for his lunch. Sounds of clattering cutlery and banging lunch boxes filled the school hall as boys piled in for their lunch break. He was on his second bite of sandwich when there was a huge bang in front of him. He looked up and his insides sank. Bini had decided to sit opposite him. It wasn’t Bini’s personality that was the problem. He was kind to others and fun to play with, but he has one big flaw. He was a really messy eater. Bini didn’t just make a mess on himself, he made a mess everywhere! Chaim quickly said “Hi” and looked down so he didn’t have to see the mess Bini was making while he ate his sandwich. Bini tried to engage Chaim in conversation, but Chaim just pretended he was too busy eating to talk. He finished his sandwich as quickly as he could so that he wouldn’t have to sit with Bini any longer than was necessary. Try as he might, he couldn’t help staring at Bini, taking note of the large orange juice stain decorating his shirt and the peanut butter in his hair. There were crumbs all over the table and smears of
yogurt on his face. Unable to take the sight any longer and desperately trying not to let his disgust show on his face, he closed his lunch box and said “Goodbye” to Bini. Chaim hadn’t even finished his own lunch, but he just couldn’t stay any longer. As he turned to go, he saw Bini’s slumped shoulders out of the corner of his eye and felt a bit guilty about leaving so soon. When Chaim returned home from school, Ima had supper ready at the

table and he sat down looking at the food hungrily. “Did you not eat your lunch today?” Ima asked him. “No” said Chaim between large mouthfuls of spaghetti and meatballs. “I did eat it,’’ he swallowed. “But I didn’t finish it.” “Why not?” “Because of Bini. It’s just unbearable eating with him! He is so messy!” His hair, his shirt, his face! I can’t eat while looking at him, it put me off my lunch!”
“Hmm,’’ said Ima “Is this Bini Shechter?’ “Yes,’’ replied Chaim. “Why?’ “Well, I am only telling you this l’toeles (for a good purpose), but Bini’s mummy is very unwell. Is it possible he doesn’t realise he is eating so untidily because his mother is not always around to teach him how to eat nicely?” ‘Oh my goodness” exclaimed Chaim “I can’t believe it! That’s so sad.” “Yes” Ima said. “Do you think that you could do a big mitzvah and help him?” Chaim was very quiet and thoughtful throughout the rest of the evening. The next morning Chaim told his mother “I have an idea of how to help Bini.” As soon as he arrived at school he pulled Bini to one side. “Bini! How are you? Would you like to join us for supper tonight at my house?” Bini looked bemused. “But you don’t like eating with me”, he said in surprise. Chaim took Bini by the arm as the bell rang. “Sometimes I find it hard to eat nicely at home and my Ima said she would teach me how to keep clean and I thought you could come with me and help me learn.” Bini grinned “I’d love to!” and they walked off happily together to their first class of the day.

Dear Jana How do YOU BBQ? Dear reader The sun is shining, the drinks are cooling. What better time to fire up the BBQ? When we BBQ, we like to go either super simple or all out. The super simple version is hot dogs (try out our new chicken hot dogs in store), burgers and chicken wings (plain or marinated). The burgers and wings as well as fresh sausages and shishliks are always on special at Kosher Deli so make for a good budget BBQ. When we want to go all out, we have all of the above plus some marinated chicken thighs or drumsticks (there are a number of flavours available in store) and for the pièce de resistance, we take a rib joint and separate it out into flat pieces. To do this, lay the joint on a board and remove the strings. Slide your fingers under the flap and separate it gently from the eye, use a sharp knife to loosen it if needed. Then butterfly the eye by slicing not quite all the way through the middle and open it up to make a flat piece. Always use a very sharp knife when cutting meat and keep away from ready to eat items to avoid cross contamination. To cook it, sprinkle with salt and pepper and lay it on the grill when it has cooled off a bit. Any leftovers of that rib (ha ha!) can be sliced cold for sandwiches, Shabbat platters or even just snacking. We tend to eat mostly straight off the BBQ but if you do want to sit and make a meal of it, make sure you have ketchup, mustard and a good garlic mayo to add to buns or for dipping. Find us on Instagram @kosherdeli_uk and tell us how YOU BBQ! Jana Klein
