SWEET RECIPE OF SUCCESS

Food, home essentials and toys for Ukranian refugees at the border with Poland BY DAVID SAFFER

World Jewish Relief (WJR) has raised £3m for its Ukraine Crisis Appeal. To meet Ukrainians’ urgent needs over the next six to 12 months WJR needs a minimum of £5m. In Ukraine, WJR is responding across the country by providing cash transfers, food and medical equipment. They are also continuing homecare and providing psychological support and assisting partners to evacuate vulnerable people. Working with the Ukrainian Embassy in the UK, WJR is providing over 40,000 emergency food packages. In Poland and Moldova, the organisation is helping partners scale up capacity to welcome refugees.

Services include providing cash transfers, legal advice, food and shelter for displaced Ukrainians. WJR has also sent specialists from humanitarian and refugee teams to support partners in expanding capacity to assist refugees fleeing Ukraine. In the UK, WJR has offered the government support and expertise in refugee employment, and have urged the Home Office to extend humanitarian visas to Ukrainians. “This has been a week of despair for World Jewish Relief’s partners and clients in Ukraine,” commented WJR Stacey Swimer. “I have had tears down the phone line as partners take desperate measures to evacuate as many civilians from major cities as possible.” Stacey thanked the Jewish

community for its generosity and urged people to continue donating and sharing the appeal. “We stand with the people of Ukraine, and will be there in the weeks, months and years to come with support,” she said. WJR has helped facilitate evacuations from conflict hotspots Kharkiv, Kyiv, Zaporizhia and Mariupol and linked with partners in western Ukraine, Poland and Germany. WJR has supported JCC Krakow, Kyiv-based JUSI and Dreamland and 2U, and in a display of network cooperation, sent funds to Hesed Nefesh in Poltava for food and medicines for Hesed Shaare Tikva in Kharkiv. WJR has also supported American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in evacuations

and Turbota Pro Litneh to benefit older people. WJR are ready to welcome refugees. In preparation, WJR is adapting its STEP programme. Manchester-based Orach Chaim Foundation (British Friends of Kyiv), meantime, has evacuated around 2,000 people from Kyiv and other cities and towns in Ukraine. Working with the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Rabbi Yaakov D Bleich, 40 bus loads have transported people to refugee camps and safe havens. More funds are required due to huge resettlement costs. The foundation runs refugee camps in Peremyshlyany, Yampil and Belz in western Ukraine. And they are providing armed security for an assisted living home in Kyiv where there are 100 elderly residents. Costs have escalated. Each bus from Kyiv to the west of Ukraine before the war cost $500. Today, it is $28,000. The cost for the 2-hour journey, includes security and a military escort to leave Kyiv. Orach Chaim are partners with the American Friends of Kyiv along with others globally to save lives. The group has raised over $2.1m with the UK foundation, under the auspices of Rabbi Yechiel Emanuel and trustee Nathan Feldman, raising the second highest amount of $177,000.

Zelensky vows to fight Putin “whatever the costs” BY DAVID SAFFER

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the House of Commons in a landmark videolink address and vowed to fight President Vladimar Putin’s Russian forces “whatever the costs” on Tuesday. Echoing Winston Churchill’s famous World War Two speech, Zelensky pledged to fight Putin’s troops “in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets”. And in a spellbinding address, he added, “We will not give up, and we will not lose. We will fight to the end in the sea, in the air. We will fight for our land, whatever the costs. We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets.” Zelensky appealed to the British Government to keep the Ukrainian skies safe, thanked MPs for their support and called for more sanctions against Putin. Prime Minister Boris Johnson undertook to employ “diplomatic, humanitarian and economic” methods until Putin fails and Ukraine is “free once more”. Zelensky also addressed the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations and described the Russian invasion as “pure Nazism” during the week, recalling strikes near Babyn Yar and Uman, a holy place for Charedi Orthodox Jews. Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, recalled former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir, who was born in Kyiv. “It would be great to have her now with

us,” she said. “I think she would help a lot in this great fight.” William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents, welcomed Zelensky’s appeal. “We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters praying for peace and continued US leadership to end the conflict,” he said. Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked announced that Israel will host 25,000 citizens of Ukraine and confirmed that Israel would absorb 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing the fighting within the Law of Return. outrage yesterday when a maternity and children’s ward was destroyed in an air strike on a hospital in Mariupol. There are reports of many dead and injured, with children buried in rubble. “The destruction is colossal,” the city council stated. The Vatican has offered to be an intermediary in the midst of the escalation of attacks. And it attacked Putin’s forces for the hospital attack. Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, told reporters: “Bombing a hospital is unacceptable. There are no reasons, there are no motivations, to do this.” Over recent days Russia has backtracked on various humanitarian ceasefire agreements while the EU and global leaders continue to ramp up sanctions in a bid to halt Putin’s actions. Chabad shlichim in Kharkiv, meantime, are counting their blessings after a mix up saved the lives of 18 Jews escaping war-torn Ukraine. Chabad’s stroke of luck made headline news and was a rare moment of hope in the escalating crisis. Two groups of Jews were due to flee Kharkiv on Monday and Tuesday, the second group of 18 living in the same building in the city. Fortuitously the group departed 24 hours earlier by mistake. Russian forces destroyed the building when they would have been inside on Tuesday. Chabad is central to Jewish life in Ukraine providing food shelter and medical supplies to Jews remaining. They are transporting and caring for thousands who have left the country. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett heard first

hand from Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis leading the rescue of the Jews of Ukraine as the humanitarian crisis in the country grows. Bennett met virtually with leaders as Israel prepares for a surge of Ukrainian Jewish refugees. Ukraine is home to an estimated 350,000 Jews across the country. Chabad leaders participating in the virtual meeting included Rabbis Sholom Gopin and Pinchas Vishedski working with Jewish refugees in Romania, Chief Rabbi of Dnipro, Rabbi Shmuel Kamineski, whose Menorah Centre is based in Ukraine, Rabbi Yosef Wolff, of Kherson and Chabad-affiliated Federation of Jewish Communities coordinating rescue efforts. Chabad command centres are established in Ukraine, Israel and New York. Two weeks ago, 200 Chabad emissary families were leading Chabad centres in 35 cities. Most centres have now been converted to shelters, crisis centres and terminals where 30,000 refugees have travelled to Moldova, Slovakia, Romania and Poland. Most refugees are from cities including Kharkov, Sumy, Chernigev and Kiev. Chabad leaders anticipate that it will take decades for life in Ukraine to return to normal with homes and communities destroyed. Relief organisers are exploring investing $500,000 for buses to transport Jews over the border. Transportation and food costs for refugees is currently estimated to be around $3 million. Once over the border, refugees are met by Chabad emissaries and aid organisations to assist in accommodation, kosher food and resettlement. Chabad emissaries have rented two hotels in Romania to assist communities. Last Shabbat, Chabad Budapest hosted refugees, thousands were hosted in Moldova and Romania. And Rabbi Kamineski attended a barmitzvah at the Golden Rose Synagogue in Dnipro on Monday in a celebratory moment of normality. Dnipro, formerly Dnepropetrovsk, is an historic place in Jewish history. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, was chief rabbi between 1908-1939. The Rebbe grew up in the city, then called Yekaterinoslav. Donations: www.chabad.org/special/ campaigns/ukraine/donate.htm WHAT’S INSIDE THIS WEEK 02 News 18 Opinion 20 Games 22 Community 34 Cookery

Kibbutz movement mourns death of Hayanka BY ADAM MOSES

Pioneering Kibbutznik Hayanka Gilad passed away this week at the age of 110. Hayanka immigrated to Israel from Lithuania in 1937 and was the oldest member of Israel’s Kibbutz Movement. Two years later her family moved to the Upper Galilee to help establish Kibbutz Dafna, one of Israel’s longest established communal communities. In 2019 it neared a population of 1,000. The national organisation in a statement said the entire movement was mourning Hayanka’s loss. “(She) was a symbol for all of us when she immigrated alone from Lithuania,” they noted. “Hayanka devoted most of her life in the kibbutz to education and retired only at the age of 97 after joining the kibbutz shoe factory at the age of 63.” Hayanka’s son Erik recalled that his mother worked at the Kibbutz in variety of roles all her life. “She worked at the chicken coops, in the kitchen and for almost 60 years was a caregiver and worked in education,” he

reportedly said. “She would get up every morning at 6 am and stay active until 11 pm or even midnight. She continued to work at the kibbutz’s shoe factory, until one night she fell and then decided to retire.” Hayanka moved to the kibbutz’s sheltered housing and remained an active member of the kibbutz’s community. “She was constantly involved in activities,” said Erik. “She knew everything, remembered everything and continued to be the life of the party everywhere.” “She never quarrelled with anyone. To her, everyone was a good person,” he added. Hayanka is survived by three children, nine grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Herzog and Erdogan meet in Turkey President Isaac Herzog departed on a state visit to Turkey this week. The first Israeli leader to visit Turkey since 2008, Herzog was scheduled to visit Ankara and Istanbul. He met President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the presidential complex. Both leaders were set to discuss bilateral issues including Israel-Turkey relations and collaboration between the states in various fields. In a packed itinerary Herzog would lay a wreath at the tomb of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Ankara before a tour of the Anitkabir Ataturk Museum and meet representatives of the Jewish community at the Neve Shalom Synagogue in Istanbul. “Israel-Turkey relations are important for Israel, important for Turkey, and important for the whole region,” Herzog said on departure. “At a time when the international order is being shaken it is good and proper that stability and partnership be maintained in our region. “We will not agree on everything, and the relationship between Israel and Turkey has certainly known ups and downs and not-so-simple moments in recent years, but we shall try to restart our relations and build them in a measured and cautious manner, and with mutual respect between our states.” Herzog’s election brought a resumption of dialogue between the nations.

Israel German resident poll revealed BY ADAM MOSES

A new survey conducted by The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has revealed an informative set of perceptions of residents from Israel and Germany. The poll was organised in relation to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett welcoming Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz on an official state visit last week. Areas analysed included support for the State of Israel, religiousness, antisemitism, Middle East dialogue and visiting Israel. Both countries expect the new German government to continue Chancellor Angela Merkel’s positive approach towards Israel including its security. Within the Israeli population, the perception of Germany was dependent on a respondent’s level of orthodoxy. As religiousness increases attitudes towards Germany were more negative. In Germany, age-groups of respondents from former East and West Germany, and a history of migration appeared important. In Israel, affinity for Germany relates to Jewish or Arab ethnicity. Regarding antisemitism, almost 60% of Germans agreed that antisemitism was a problem in their country with 72% coming from the far right. Around 66% of German respondents thought Israel could be criticised without a connection to antisemitic attitudes.

In Israel, a majority did not see criticism of Israel as antisemitism, but sometimes there was a link. Asked whether Germany should be a mediator between Israel and Middle East countries around half of Israeli respondents backed the notion. A similar percentage of German respondents liked the role. Younger German respondents were keen for their country to be diplomatically involved with Israel. Under a third of Israeli respondents and

just 13% of German had visited each other’s country. Many were repeat visitors. Those from West Germany had visited and were 63 years old. Knowledge of each other’s country and culture was limited. German respondents struggled to distinguish between Israeli and Jewish culture. Professor Gisela Dachs of HU’s European Forum and principal author of the survey, believes Israel and Germany are at a critical stage in their bilateral relationship. “We need to look to the future,” she explained. “History is a strong pillar but it fades away. The challenge is to build a shared future between Israel and Germany that is not only founded on a shared past.” Dachs will conduct surveys every two years so changes in attitude and experience are tracked. “The importance of this survey lies in the fact that we collected concrete data not only about what the respondents think but also what they actually do,” she said. Dachs felt that the survey had implications for education and public policy for both governments. The European Forum at HU includes research centres, graduate study programs and research funds. The forum focuses on teaching and research of important long-term processes in Europe, European integration and its link with Israel and the Middle East.

World leaders must “act against Iranian aggression” says Gantz BY DAVID SAFFER

Defence Minister Benny Gantz has called on world leaders “to act against Iranian aggression”. Israel’s defence minister warned that hostility from Iran and its proxies was a threat to global peace, regional stability and the State of Israel. Gantz’ comments came with the White House reportedly days from signing a new nuclear deal with Iran. And it occurred as Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met in Riga on Monday to discuss Israel’s diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war with Ukraine. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met with former US Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday in Jerusalem. They discussed the nuclear agreement and situation in Ukraine. Israel has continually noted dissatisfaction regarding an agreement being reached after the 2015 deal. “It’s not a secret we have our differences on this, but it is a conversation between allies that have a common goal which is to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear threshold country,” Lapid said. Israel’s defence leader said while a nuclear agreement was being negotiated in Vienna the world must remember Iranian aggression was being conducted without holding nuclear weapons. “If Iran reaches a nuclear threshold, it will become even more dangerous to world

peace,” he noted. Gantz added, “Now is the time for the world to mobilise to stop it. As I have said in the past, the State of Israel will take all the measures necessary to prevent Iran from becoming an existential threat.” Gantz cited Israeli military action intercepting Iranian UAV’s carrying weapons from Iran to Gaza in a detailed overview. “The IDF and Israeli defence establishment will continue to act decisively in the face of Iranian aggression and terrorism,” he warned. “We will thwart any attempted attack and charge a painful price from Iran. The IDF released footage this week of a mission a year ago to intercept the UAVs. The UAVs were intercepted by the IAFs F-35i ‘Adir’ aircraft, an IDF spokesperson said in a statement.

PHOTO: KOBY GIDEON (GPO)

“The interception of the UAVs was carried out prior to them entering Israeli airspace, in coordination with neighbouring countries,” they noted. “The UAVs were detected and tracked throughout their flight by ground control units.” The IDF hold the viewpoint that Iranian operations will increase over the coming years. Israel have intercepted UAVs from Gaza, Lebanon and Syria in recent years. The IDF intercepts 90% of UAVs close to Israel’s border despite challenges. Gantz has previously revealed the base where Iran trains its proxies in ‘Kashan’ and exposed missiles being launched from bases in the Chabahar and Qeshem regions of Iran. Gantz said a nuclear deal may be signed “in the coming days” last week.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

“Whether or not an agreement will be signed, it will not be the end of the road for us, nor should it be for the countries of the region and the world, which must continue to act against Iranian aggression,” he explained. “The State of Israel and its defence establishment will take all the measures necessary, political, economic and if needed, also military, in order to defend our sovereignty and ensure the security of the citizens of Israel.” During a recent trip to Washington, Gantz presented where attacks could be conducted on Israel. Only last month at a meeting of the ‘Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organisations’ in Jerusalem, Gantz said that Iran exports advanced UAVs and weapons to Middle East proxies along with Central America countries. Bennett commented on the Vienna talks and Iranian nuclear threat last week. Mapping out a ‘sense of direction’ he noted, “The sun will not set on Israel’s security and the well-being of its citizens. The (JCPOA) agreement does not bind us, and the date, two and a half years from now, which allows Iran to assemble countless centrifuges, certainly does not bind us. “One day, we will have to ask ourselves how it came to be, that the State of Israel, with all the talk and tremendous resources allocated to the issue in the last decade, finds itself in a situation where Iran’s nuclear capabilities are so advanced.”

Women speak out about domestic abuse BY DAVID SAFFER

Four Jewish women who experienced domestic abuse and sexual violence have told harrowing stories on camera as part of a matched funding campaign March 13-14. Extracts of ‘We must act now before her time runs out’ released this week reveal shocking examples of abuse in the London and Manchester Jewish community. Whilst stories are unique, they highlight common ways Jewish women are harmed and the stigma that exists for support. Funds raised in the campaign will help secure the future of Jewish Women’s Aid, which supported 546 women and over 300 children in 2021. In some of the films a client’s face is obscured and a voice actor speaks their words. Client A, ‘Sara’, is an orthodox woman whose husband abused her. She said, “Without Jewish Women’s Aid my time would have run out.” The husband of Client B, ‘Lia’, was physically and emotionally abused, as well as their son. Eventually ‘Lia’ called the police due to escalating violence. “Nobody really wants to admit that they’re in an abusive relationship and that things were happening to their children but I realised that there was not going to be any way out of this,” she said. Jewish Women’s Aid gave her practical support.

“My children were offered play therapy because for a long time, my son didn’t really want to speak and he didn’t have the confidence to say anything but over time he found his voice,” she said. Client C suffered physical abuse including during pregnancy, as well as emotional abuse.

“If it wasn’t for Jewish Women’s Aid,” Client C said, “I don’t know where I’d be today, it was like a lifeline for me.” Client D was 23 when she contacted Jewish Women’s Aid after suffering coercive control at the hands of her boyfriend. “I went to see a caseworker who really helped me to understand my situation but also what a healthy relationship should look like,” she said. Naomi Dickson JWA CEO, said, “We are in awe of the women who offered to tell their story as part of our campaign. They are making a huge contribution to opening up the conversation about domestic abuse and sexual violence in our community and we are all hugely grateful. What their stories show is how abuse affects all parts of our community, how varied it is and of course, how hidden. “We need to make sure that we are challenging abusive behaviour and also that we have the professional services in place to support affected women. But we have never faced a less stable fundraising climate. With Covid-19 still affecting dinners and events, and a number of grants coming to an end, this campaign aims to raise enough for us to continue to offer our free services for at least an additional year. We call on the community to support Jewish Women’s Aid to make sure we can continue to be here to support the women who need us.” Donations: www.charityextra.com/jwa

Bibi tests positive Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has tested positive for COVID-19. The former Prime Minister was “feeling well” and following coronavirus guidelines according to a statement from his spokesperson Benjamin Netanyahu PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK yesterday. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid wished Netanyahu a speedy recovery. Netanyahu was in the Knesset on Wednesday before his PCR result. Knesset Sergeant-at-Arms Yuval Chen called on parliamentary staff to follow Health Ministry’s measures. Netanyahu is not the only MK to test positive. Yamina Party MK Shirly Pinto announced her result earlier in the day. “I’m the 61st MK to have caught it, I’m feeling fine, thanks to everyone for your concern,” she tweeted. Unvaccinated Israelis no longer have to self-isolate after contact with a coronavirus patient unless in the same household, the Knesset Health Committee approved last Friday. Covid-19 testing for school students has ended as measures relent. Vaccinated Israelis, or those recently recovered, do not need to quarantine even if in the same household as a patient.

PUTIN AND ZELENSKY Dear Editor It is a great pity that Putin has neither read nor digested the singularly wise advice widely given by HaRav Jonathan Sacks, heeded by many Heads of State and those in position of leadership, to their own advantage. Putin seemingly wants to conquer the world. Notwithstanding his power and wealth, Putin is so frightened that if Ukraine has independence it will diminish his own strength. In his book “Judaism’s Life-Changing Ideas” on last week’s Sidrah, Pekudei, Rabbi Sacks discusses the Mishcan (sanctuary) that G-d allowed us to build for Him, compared to the World He built for us! Hashem created the world by limiting Himself (Tzimtzum). HaRav

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Sacks makes the point that “the highest achievement is self limitation: making space for something other and different from us.” Rav Sacks continues that “’Great”’ people are there when needed, but they don’t crush or inhibit or try to dominate. They practice Tzimtzum, self-limitation, so that others have the space to grow. That is how G-d created the universe, and it is how we allow others to fill our lives with their glory”. Ukraine simply wishes to live peaceably in secure borders, which is being denied it. Obviously Putin is not a “Great” Leader whilst Volodymyr Zelensky has proved himself! Yours sincerely Mrs Flora Frank

Why are we surprised? OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

In 2014 Russia annexed the Crimea and for some years now has been backing fighters in the Eastern part of the Ukraine who claim autonomy over an area with a significant number of ethnic Russian residents. When Russia, after some period of sabre-rattling invaded Ukraine there were cries of shock and surprise. Why? Putin had made his position clear about Ukraine and many commentators have said that the invasion was on the cards for some time. What has made matters worse is the revelation that Russia is not only a substantial trading partner for many European countries, but that much of Europe’s oil and gas comes from there. The UK Government have said it will take until the end of this year to find replacement oil supplies in place of that coming from Russia. In other words, the UK is and will be for some time to come, be funding the war against Ukraine. All this could have been avoided. The politics of personality have been much

in evidence over the last decade. Donald Trump in the USA, Angela Merkel in Germany and Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel. All of these have stamped their personality on history. The longevity of some leaders has in some countries had a significant impact. Germany under Angela Merkel cheerfully agreed to buy substantial amounts of gas from Russia, despite the knowledge that Putin has been running Russia as his own club since 2012. He is not alone. Victor Orban, the right-wing leader of Hungary who has been criticised heavily for re-writing history about the conduct of his country in the Second World War has been in power since 2010. Recep Erdogan has been increasing his authority as President since 2014. All this time, other than a few well-informed observers, little comment has been made on this worrying trend of personality

politics in Europe. Sadly, the warnings from the Baltic States concerning Putin have it seems, largely fallen on deaf ears. What then is the message to take away from this appalling lack of vision and insight? For us, there are two messages – one here and one in Israel. In the UK, as this column has observed previously, the communal leadership’s refusal to acknowledge the danger facing Jews of Muslim antisemitism is putting us all at risk. There is a view that the Board of Deputies have done a fine job calling out the BBC over their reporting of the attack on the ’Chanukah Bus’ last December. Maybe, but it is only half a job. None of this would have happened but for the attack itself, and because this appears to have been perpetrated by at least one Muslim man the BoD and other organisations

Putin had made his position clear about Ukraine and many commentators have said that the invasion was on the cards for some time.

have been as silent as the grave on the subject. Similarly with the progressive and left-wing attitudes to Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. The reason there is violence in Israel, Gaza and Judea & Samaria is all down to Israel, no-one else. And there lies the connection – wilful blindness. The West has largely ignored the warnings from Putin, Orban and Erdogan. Russia has invaded Ukraine, Hungary is absolving itself from any responsibility in the murders of their Jewish citizens and Turkey is becoming closer and closer to Iran month by month. And the Jewish leaders are ignoring the facts before their eyes and hoping, like the West did with Russian expansion, that if they excuse the Jew haters because they don’t know any better, all will be well. We know now there is a problem with Russia. Now, more than ever, the Jewish community needs to open its eyes to realities of appeasing our enemies. West began with ace-king and another heart. This alerted declarer to the very real prospect that trumps were 4-1. As it was certain that West had the ace of trumps, the problem was overcoming the case where West began with four trumps. (If East has four trumps then West’s ace will be singleton and declarer would be able to ruff a fourth heart in the same hand as the original ruff was taken.) As he saw that he would need a trump substitute to run through West when he began with four trumps, declarer discarded the eight of clubs from dummy and ruffed the third round of hearts in his hand. Next declarer played the king and queen of trumps, both of which West allowed to hold. East’s discard on the second round was expected and declarer went to his fall-back plan. All he needed was for West to have begun with a 4:5:2:2 distribution; he took the ace and queen of clubs followed by the ace and queen of diamonds. Next came the king of clubs and West had no winning option. If he ruffed high, declarer would draw trumps after winning the next trick. As ruffing low was a hopeless defence, West discarded a heart and declarer threw a diamond from dummy. Then came the card West was hoping not to see, jack of clubs, much to his chagrin. As ruffing would do no good and discarding would see dummy’s remaining diamond disappear, West folded his cards and sportingly remarked, “Well played”.

Youth project for Ukraine at St. John’s Wood Youth Project for Ukraine, receives an unprecedented response from St John’s Wood community. Over 200 people visited St. John’s Wood Synagogue on Sunday to donate supplies – including food, toiletries, and clothes to Ukrainian refugees. Responding to an urgent call from the charity GIFT, who were sending supplies via Poland to Lviv. The community donated thousands of items with incredible generosity. These supplies went straight to the front-line of the Polish-Ukrainian border to provide much needed support to those who need it. The collection was boosted by the enthusiastic volunteer support of the Synagogue’s youth, and many others who volunteered to organise, sort, and package the donations as people turned up with entire car boots filled with items. In the words of Georgia Aaron, 11, who is going to be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah in May, “I really enjoyed helping and it made me feel great seeing how generous people can be and how a community can join together to do something to make an impact!” Allegra Crystal, 13, added It was such a pleasure to be able to help the organisers of SJW sort out the donations for the food and clothes drive to send to the Ukraine. It was incredible to see the huge outpour of donations from the extended

community, from canned foods, cereal bars, baby essentials and even sleeping bags and pillows. It made me realise how important it is to be in a position to help to those who have had to leave their whole world behind and only pack a backpack or if lucky a suitcase and flee to safety. It made me wonder… if I had to fit all my essentials in one bag… what would I pack with me?” Toby and Bracha Weiniger, St. John’s Wood Synagogue’s Youth directors organised this outstanding project.

More than a hundred Project ImpACT teenage volunteers took a break from their usual weekly volunteering sessions cooking for the homeless to join together and bring Purim joy to charities. They rolled up their sleeves to make and bake Hamantaschen in partnership with US Chessed for Jewish charities including Jami, Langdon, Norwood and Chai Cancer Care. An excited buzz and a delicious aroma filled the air while the teenagers worked together making pastry, adding tasty fillings and baking. Once cooked, the Hamantaschen were individually packaged by the volunteers and wrapped with special messages of support for their recipients. Louise Hager, Chair of Chai Cancer Care

Celebrate

praised the volunteers for working together to make a difference for various charities every week. In light of the war in Ukraine she talked to the volunteers about the importance of unity in the face of challenging times. She said: “There is complete unity in Ukraine now and that’s a lesson you can all take together. Am Yisroel Chai.” Joe Green, 15 said: “I have been doing Project ImpACT as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Silver award and let me tell you, it’s amazing. Every session is inspiring. We hear from a speaker briefing us about who we are volunteering for, which helps us connect more with the people we are trying to help. We then get busy, cooking, baking and packing.” Email elainecarlton@sky.com

JNF UK Green Sunday a success

The JNF team celebrating their success

Imagine eating a sandwich through a straw. For those with severe dental problems who are dependent on welfare in Akko, a mixed city in the north of Israel, this is the reality. It was therefore with much delight that we were able to resume JNF UK’s Green Sunday Telethon on the 27th February from our offices, following last year’s disruption due to Covid-19 restrictions. This year’s appeal focussed on raising funds to support the Akko Community

Dental Clinic that provides those on welfare and in dire need with funded dental treatment. This Clinic offers a vital and crucial service helping patients who cannot afford dental care to receive subsidised treatment that will massively improve their lives. Our staff and representative Trustees along with volunteers were on hand to assist with making hundreds of phone calls to raise the monies needed for this project. The team also received support from actors participating in

JNF UK’s sponsored 2022 Festival of Ivrit. This Festival is part of our broader programme to support UK schools to enhance their Israel education syllabus and strengthen children’s connection to Israel. Or Meir, who plays the role of The King in the Emperor’s New Clothes (one of this year’s plays) said, “Ha’Shaah Theatre is delighted to participate in JNF UK’s Green Sunday Appeal to help raise funds for those in need in Israel’s peripheries.” No teeth. No eating. No health. No confidence. No job. Dental issues affect entire societies, and severe dental problems destroy lives. The damage caused by poor dental health is not widely acknowledged. Severe dental problems ruin lives. The damage caused due to poor dental health is not sufficiently known but also seems to be related to heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and mental illness. Dr Shai Bezalely, CEO of JNF UK said, “We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support from our donors, and we wish to thank all those whose donations this Green Sunday continue to help those in need the peripheries. Thanks to the generosity of the UK Jewish community, we can raise the funds to support this vital Akko project that will make a difference and change lives.” If you would like to donate to this important Green Sunday 2002 Appeal, please visit www.jnf.co.uk/gs2022 or call us on 020 8732 6100.

War in Ukraine? What can a little puzzle company possibly do to help?

David Arden and Lee Rowley MP at WE Hub

Industry Minister Lee Rowley has praised the “passion and creativity” of Jewish small businesses after visiting WE Hub. The community’s shared workspace in Finchley is run by Work Avenue which offers start-ups and small businesses a chance to hot-desk daily or rent a desk or office space. Rowley was given a chance to meet entrepreneurs. Work Avenue CEO David Arden said, “WE Hub is bustling with ideas, inspiration and ingenuity so it was wonderful to be able to show the Minister what it is all about.” As part of the tour, Laura Jackson,

founder of Popcorn Shed explained how she has used the facility and described the journey working from home to accommodating a growing team. Arden noted that Rowley was impressed with how passionate and creative members were especially in sharing ideas and experiences. “Our hope is that WE Hub can be used as an exemplar to other communities of what can be achieved,” he said. TorahWay Golders Green

Harav Yissocher Frand Shlita BY REB DOODY ROSENBERG

An impressive attendance congregated at TorahWay Golders Green Tuesday morning to be enthralled by words of inspiration presented by Harav Yissocher Frand Shlita, the Rosh Yeshiva of Ner Yisrael Baltimore. The very title of his speech was a prodding and concerning question, Are We Feeling the Pain of our Brothers and Sisters in Ukraine? clearly pointed to a possibility that we don’t. And of course, every one of us is confronted by the nagging question why we don’t.

However, in sourcing examples and proofs ranging from Tanach to contemporary giants of Jewry, there existed a common thread: caring for and sharing the pain of others is a dominant and supreme characteristic of the Ribono Shel Olam. As we are obligated to emulate His ways this is our Chiyuv D’Oraysa of being Nosai B’ol Chaveiro, sharing in the plight of one’s fellow Jews. Rebbetzin Kotler, z”l, never took sugar in her tea for the entire duration of WWII. Harav Shach z”tl, slept with his head off the pillow during the Gulf War. Reaching into Torah

sources, Moshe Rabbeinu, the greatest leader and prophet in Klal Yisrael, was epitomised by this Middah of caring for others – even a sheep – manifesting itself by the burning bush. This proved him having leadership qualities that the Aibshter sought. The concluding story of Natan Sharansky illustrating ironically how the world has changed since Communist Russia. At a Sheva Berachos, he described the fear of having “Jew” stamped into a passport, which spelled ridicule, persecution and plain anti-Semitism, although the passport bearer would have little clue of the religion that he was branded with. This very “J” proved to be the salvation of Jewish people fleeing Ukraine in the last fortnight and with this pride, Reb Yissochor awakened within us the hope and aspiration for the footsteps of Moshiach when, again, the Jewish Nation will be the envy of the entire world. Setting an example, he ended at exactly 9:00 a.m., although the enraptured audience would have contentedly stayed and listened to him for a lot longer. Great credit and admiration is due to TorahWay’s Duddy Iczkovits and Josh Frankel for their unstinting and indefatigable efforts in providing new and stimulating speakers every week. The shiur can be watched or heard in www. torahway.org.uk or via Kol Haloshon (1,9,3)

Jewish Care hosts 34th Topland Group Business Lunch

More than 900 people gathered at Grosvenor House for Jewish Care’s Topland Group Business Lunch, which raised over £400,000 to support their vital services. The lunch, in its 13th year of partnership with the Topland Group, featured guest speaker, renowned presenter and broadcaster, Andrew Neil. Andrew gave a very frank account of the current state of affairs in the world today and the fight for democratic freedoms throughout history. Speaking of Ukraine, Andrew said, “When Ukraine emerges from this long, dark time, it will emerge with its pride and respect higher than ever, and nations of Europe with no doubt that Ukraine is a European democracy that intends to be at the heart of Europe and part of the European family. And when that happens, you’ll know that democracy has not been defeated in the 21st century, in fact, it is back with a spring in its step.” The award this year, given in memory of Philip Greenwold, who was one of the Topland Group Lunch Committee’s original members, was awarded to Holocaust survivor, Lily Ebert BEM and her great grandson, Dov Forman. Lily Ebert was one of the founding members of Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors’ Centre, the only place of its kind in the country which supports Holocaust survivors through a specific programme of social, cultural and specialist therapeutic activities. Lily has dedicated her life to Holocaust education, speaking publicly in schools and universities around the world. After fortunately recovering from Covid-19 in 2020 at 97 years old, her great grandson, Dov, came up with the idea of turning to social media, in particular, Tik Tok, to help Lily continue to share her story when the world was in lockdown and Lily was no longer able to educate others in person. In one of the first Tik Tok videos Dov

shared, Lily said, “I want to tell you about my story, because in a few years’ time I won’t be able to. It will become history.” Lily and Dov now have over 1.9 million followers on Tik Tok, and their book, Lily’s Promise is a Sunday Times Best-Seller and Waterstones and Daily Mail UK’s best history book of 2021. Lily also appeared in the powerful documentary, “Portraits of the Holocaust”, in which she was one of the seven survivors featured in specially commissioned paintings by Prince Charles which are now on display in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace. In 2016, Lily was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to Holocaust education and in November 2021, Dov received the Points of Light award from the Prime Minister in recognition of exceptional services to Holocaust education. All guests were given a copy of Lily and

Dov’s book, Lily’s Promise, which was kindly donated by Dentons. Accepting the award on behalf of him and Lily, Dov Forman, said: “It is now more important than ever that we listen to incredible survivors like my great grandmother. We must remember their stories and we must take the time to remember those who are no longer able to speak for themselves. Lily knew that if she survived Auschwitz, she would tell the world about what happened to her and her family. She knew that one day in her future, she would be called on to become a witness, and I know that one day in my future, I will carry on her legacy. I will be her witness to the next generation. And today, if you listen to my great grandmother, and read her story in our book, “Lily’s Promise”, we are inviting you to become her witnesses too. I would like to thank Jewish Care for this

award, and I feel incredibly privileged to share a stage and this award with my incredible great grandmother.” Daniel Carmel- Brown, Chief Executive, Jewish Care, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be back with our generous supporters at the largest Topland Group Business Lunch to date, and certainly the largest in-person event we have held since the pandemic, with over 900 people in the room. We are incredibly grateful to all of our guests who have helped to raise an extraordinary amount of money for our core services. Jewish Care was honoured to give this year’s award to Lily Ebert and Dov Forman who have dedicated so much to Holocaust education, something that is so important not just to our community, but to the world. We also, of course, extend huge thanks to Andrew Neil for such an interesting keynote address.” David Pollock, Chairman of the Topland Group Business Committee, said: “After an extremely challenging two years, it is great to be back at this event in person. We are so glad to see the room filled with 900 guests and we owe a huge thanks to so many for helping to bring today together and provide great support for Jewish Care’s vital services.” Sol Zakay, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Topland Group, said: “We are so pleased to see a record number of people here again this year supporting Jewish Care. It is also so important that we see Dov and Lily honoured for their work and dedication to Holocaust education through both traditional and new, innovative avenues. Digital archive of Rabbi Sacks launched A new website by The Rabbi Sacks Legacy Trust was launched Tuesday to coincide with what would have been Rabbi Sacks’ 74th birthday. The Trust was established to perpetuate and promote Rabbi Sacks’ teachings to inspire future generations following his passing in November 2020. Utilising cutting-edge technology, the digital archive has over 3,000 pages of content including speeches, articles, Torah commentaries, videos and audio recordings. The site will continue to expand. Visitors are able to explore Rabbi Sacks’ life and impact, books and audio, Torah teachings, thoughts on morality and ethics, and

an extensive series of educational resources. The website includes the release of a newly animated video on Being Jewish, accompanying a recording of Rabbi Sacks from 2010.

The LSJS matching campaign smashed its original goal in less than 12 hours and went on to run a bonus round raising over £450,000 when the campaign closed. Joanne Greenaway, LSJS Chief Executive, said “we are so grateful to all our supporters for getting behind our campaign. GIFT aid for Ukraine An early morning call on Sunday to Michelle Barnett, GIFT’s Founding Director, from Chaya Bayla & Shloimie Chontow, friends of the Rabbi & Rebezzin of Lviv, Ukraine asking for GIFT’s help, set off an incredible snowball of events. The urgent message had come through from the city of Lviv, in western Ukraine, that the shelves of the supermarkets were totally empty, no food was available. The imposed curfew also meant people couldn’t access supplies and with hundreds of thousands of refugees flocking in to the city, the situation was, and is, dire. Immediately, GIFT sent out WhatsApp messages and social media requests to its huge network asking for dry non-perishable food items at their GIFT Giving Hub in North West London. Within just 2 hours, thousands of pounds worth of food and essential items had poured in. The whole community rallied together, medicines were generously donated through Hatzola UK and hundreds of people from across the community went straight to local stores to purchase requested items. Volunteers and friends helped take Shloimie Chontow and his 9 suitcases to the airport, where he boarded a plane for Krakow, meeting a van driver there to take the cases of food, medicines and provisions across the border. The collection was so successful that GIFT has now arranged a 24 tonne truck to take the remainder of the provisions, and a very generous donation of 2 tonnes of pasta, rice and couscous to Lviv this week together with

the collections arranged at Edgware United Shul, Saatchi Synagogue and collections from other organisations too. Chontow remarked “It’s all Hashem’s power how He managed to get everyone together – especially GIFT, who was there at the right time, willing & able to mobilise so many volunteers to do such chessed - totally unbelievable.” Following Sunday’s incredible food collection, Tikva orphanage also approached GIFT, with the knowledge of their network of volunteers and excellent track record in successful calls to action, to help collect new & gently worn, warm clothing for the children of Tikva Orphanage and for other Ukrainian Jewish refugees. The clothes will be flown to Romania

on Wednesday with Rabbi Milun and the CEO of Tikva, to the hundreds of children that have been relocated there from Odessa. Last week, in response to a specific request by the Chabad Rabbi of Kishinev, Moldova, for hechshered snacks, sweets and crisps; GIFT collected 500kg of snacks which was driven there for the thousands of refugee families with children who are flooding in from across the Ukraine. The sweets arrived this week to the delight of the Rabbi who remarked – “ Thank you so much GIFT for your incredible sweet donations – I can’t wait to see the joy of the faces of the children when they receive these.” Rachelli Lerner head teacher at Pardes

10 MARCH 2022 House Primary School explains “A great teaching moment happened in Pardes House Primary School this week. When they saw the advert from GIFT, asking for people to contribute snacks towards the orphanages in Odessa, they decided they wanted to take it one step further. Of course doing a money collection always helps, but they wanted to do something that would help the boys understand how their assistance would directly help other children. Every child understands the pleasure of a good snack when they are hungry, or being given a treat when they have had a hard day. And that is where this collection comes in. The Year 6 boys spoke kindly and sensitively and inspired each child to bring in just one snack, to help a child like them, across the world.” Another beautiful & unique Giving initiative GIFT has recently launched is called ‘Kindness counts’. The idea behind it is that acts of kindness & prayer can counteract hatred and this platform gives people an opportunity to perform acts of kindness in memory of loved ones, friends or family who are unwell or in this case in the merit of children in the Ukraine, who need our prayers and support. There are just 3 easy steps to GIFT’s Kindness Counts, click on the link, post the kindness that you are doing and then post the name of a child in Tikva Orphanage in whose merit you are doing the act of kindness. Kindness can counteract hatred. Take on one act of kindness to do in merit of a child in the Ukraine. Visit http://jgift.org/kindness-counts and click on ‘post an act of kindness’

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com AMALEK THEN AND NOW Dear Rabbi I know this weekend we yet again do the Zachor thing, remember what Amalek did to us all those years ago – and we’re talking more than 3000 years ago. My Rabbi harps on about how it is a Biblical commandment and encourages everyone to come. I really don’t get it. There’s a lot of things I can appreciate being a mitzvah but hearing about something someone tried to do to my ancestors so many years ago, bearing in mind there is hardly if any remnant of Amalek today, makes me wonder about some of these laws and their relevance. Isadore Dear Isadore The “Zachor thing” as you call it, is indeed recalling what the Amalekites sought to do to us upon our Exodus from Egypt, when they tried to annihilate us. Our ancient Sages refer to it as chutzpas Amalek. The audacity or insolence of Amalek. Even as the rest of the world looked on in awe following the Exodus from Egypt, Amalek stepped up to launch an attack, thus cool the fervour, distort the image, and thereby expose vulnerability in the hearts of the Israelites. A mere number of weeks after having emerged from two centuries in servitude, and the fledgling nation is confronted by attack once more. Can you imagine that overwhelming sense of despair of “here we go again?” They would surely start to question themselves, “Is this going to be my perpetual reality? Do I have what it takes

to rise to the challenge? Can I be bothered to muster the energy to persevere? You say there’s hardly, if any remnant of Amalek today. I cannot tell you who, for certain, might be a descendant of Amalekites. But I can tell you that this same “chutzpah” is every bit existent, as it has been for more than 2000 years. Pogroms, Crusades, Inquisition, Holocaust and to one extent or another in corridors of the United Nations and the European Union today. It’s utterly naïve of you to think that there is no relevance to remembering what Amalek sought to do to us, especially, as we say at the Seder table, “in every generation they rise up against us…” The question is, what should our response be? An Anti-Semitic inspector came to the home of a Jewish farmer. “I’m here to investigate as I have reason to believe there is unscrupulous activity going on in your fields. Don’t be giving me hard time I have full authority to inspect.” The Jewish farmer shrugs nonchalantly: “Do as you wish, just don’t be going into that field over there just behind my house.” The inspector was incredulous: “How dare you tell me where I can and cannot go. Do you have any idea who I am?” He proceeds to pull out his badge and shoves it in the farmer’s face: “Listen here Jew. You see this badge? It says I am a City inspector with full authority to wander where so I please. Don’t you dare tell me where to go!” And with that, he proceeded to march straight into the field behind the house. Not three minutes later there is

a piercing scream. The inspector is running for his life toward the fence with big raging bull in hot pursuit. “Help me! “Help me!” He’s going to kill me!” “The farmer looks to him and yells back: “Show him your badge!” Even as the raging bull of Anti-Semitism charges towards us, we respond by showing our badge of honour. The great secret of Jewish survival is Jewish identity and Jewish pride. Don’t run and hide. Confront Amalek head on and just as then, we will win the battle once more.

UKRAINE: WHAT CAN WE DO? Dear Rabbi Even as we sit here in the comfort of our own homes in the UK, I wonder what we can do for the plight of the many in the Ukraine. I know there are a lot of relief efforts, but would appreciate your perspective on the matter. Thank you in anticipation. Sheldon Dear Sheldon It has been a long time since the hearts and minds of many millions of good and decent people have been unified, this time, filled with compassion for the people of the Ukraine. An egocentric autocrat who is in charge of the world’s largest country (by area), feels that he needs even more land. He has lied to the world that Ukraine poses a threat to his country and his people, and he has resorted to overwhelming that country, so he can conquer it as another feather in his hat, after several similar invasions in the recent past.

Dedicated Lilui Nishnat Hayeled Yaakov Moshe ben Harav Avraham ber that the whole point of this tractate is to help us to improve our midot, our characteristics and become better people. Better to our families, better to our friends and colleagues and better to ourselves. The Tosafot Yom Tov quotes the last Mishnah of the first perek of Mashechet Chagigah, which this Mishna talk about, ‘Hein Hein Gufey Torah – these, these are the body of the Torah.” And since Rabbi Eliezer ben Chisma lived after the destruction, etc., and the laws of Kinin are only applicable, etc.; therefore he

In the meantime, many innocent civilians going about their lives have been killed. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of mostly women and children have been displaced, desperately piled up in cars, busses and trains, turning instantly into refugees with only their shirts on their backs. Those who must remain there, mostly able-bodied men, are facing shortages of all sorts. I did an interview with an old friend of mine last week, who is the Chief Rabbi of Kharkov, while he was literally on the run. You can listen to it here https:// youtu.be/9EKheWkRmlU It really captures the enormity of the emotional challenge. We must intensify our offensive, become even more proactive and initiate new means that will better the world. For every upheaval we must add a new commitment to goodness. With Purim on the horizon, when we experienced a real miracle (and I’ll remind readers that the Iraq war, dropping Scuds on Israel also ended by Purim), we will surely merit the fulfillment of the prophet, “nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war no more.” May G-d indeed, immediately grant all people every reason in the world to celebrate with great joy once more, forever more!

War in Ukraine, Moral Complexity in Jerusalem BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

Life is complex and rarely one-dimensional. Our greatest mistakes occur when we oversimplify complex issues. If our personal lives are complex, history is even more complicated, and mustn’t be simplified. Simplification distorts reality. In many ways, though, the current war between Russia and the Ukraine is relatively “uncomplex”. Innocent Ukrainian civilians are facing a barrage of violence and death in an unprovoked war of naked aggression. Looking to recapture lost Russian empire, a totalitarian dictator has unleashed one of the mightiest armies in the world against defenceless civilians. Almost the entire Western world has expressed its moral outrage. All except one nation – the Jewish state. Many are furious with Israel’s neutral or lukewarm response. Shouldn’t the people of G-d take a firm and unequivocal moral stand? Shouldn’t a people who have suffered for so many centuries, sympathize with the devastating suffering of the Ukrainians? Obviously, we must deeply sympathize and commiserate with the suffering. However, our current precarious situation may not allow us to loudly vocalize this disapproval. There aren’t easy solutions to this frustrating predicament. Russia wields significant regional influence and maintains military oversight in Syria and Lebanon. To this point, they have granted us “free hand” in pursuing terror cells and in thwarting potential attacks. Putin has proven to be spiteful and vociferous condemnation by Israel could very well elicit revenge. Limited deterrence capabilities could, G-d forbid lead to loss of life. Is this situation ideal? Of course, it isn’t. The images of this lopsided war are horrifying and, are likely to get much worse before they get better. We are caught in a disturbing situation in which our overall agenda of defending our homeland creates an excruciating moral dilemma. This situation is a microcosm of the moral “obstacle course” we call modern Israel. We are historically charged to represent Hashem in this world and to model ethical behavior. Alongside that mission, we are also warranted to live in the land of Hashem. This second mission of settling Israel is also a “moral” project. We dream of returning to Israel and advancing an era of universal welfare. There is no “daylight” between two missions. They are inseparable. Yet, the world hardly sees them as such. We still inhabit a broken world which

hasn’t fully accepted Jewish presence in the land of Hashem. As we struggle to settle our land, we continue to face difficult moral quandaries. Chief among them is our interaction with resident Palestinians who also lay claim to this land. Respecting their national rights doesn’t signal lesser belief in our own divine right to Israel. If anything, disrespecting the rights of other residents of this land betrays our Jewish mission to care about the “welfare of the world”. If we fail at that mission our warrant to this land diminishes. The dilemma of how to respond to the war in the Ukraine has merely magnified a moral struggle we have navigated for decades. How can we settle and defend the land while upholding moral standards? The current version of this dilemma is: How we can defend our land while expressing moral outrage at hideous war crimes? Morality in the promised land is very complex and shouldn’t be simplified. This specific dilemma has occurred before. The end of the first mikdash era was plagued by murderous and idolatrous monarchs. Finally, in the 7th century BCE, a “great white hope” emerged. King Yoshiyahu ascended the throne, restored the lost grandeur of the mikdash and bolstered the faith of a confused nation. His reign introduced great promise that our fallen kingdom could be resuscitated. However, war was brewing upon the horizon between Egypt and the ascendent Assyrians in the north. On their way to battle the Assyrians, an Egyptian army convoy traveled through Israel. This was not our war, and we should have remained neutral, focusing on our own domestic renewal project. Yet, Yoshiyahu bristled at the prospect of foreign armies marching through Israel and spreading violence and moral corruption in their wake. Taking a firm moral stand, he banned Egyptian passage, inciting a war with an army which was merely “passing through”. Yoshiyahu’s death in battle killed any last hopes for our spiraling nation. Yoshiyahu’s stand was moral but ill-timed. He was politically vulnerable, and the general moral state of the people didn’t justify such a staunch “stand”. He was torn between his “absolute” moral agenda and the practical limitations given his shaky political situation. We are living through Yoshiyahu’s conundrum, and our decision must be more prudent. Though we may have to acknowledge “constraints” upon our condemnation, moral behavior is never “all or nothing”. Political restraints may mute our voices, but shouldn’t anesthetize our hearts or

As children of G-d it is our moral responsibility to defend justice and oppose cruelty wherever it rears its head. shut our hands. Thankfully, Israel has responded to this crisis in many other ways: we have delivered significant humanitarian aid while also providing safe haven for both Jewish and non-Jewish war refugees. Hundreds of volunteers have streamed to the front lines to help alleviate some of the suffering. As I write these lines, I am wishing well to an older student of my yeshiva on his way to Moldova to contribute to the relief efforts. As children of G-d it is our moral responsibility to defend justice and oppose cruelty wherever it rears its head. Sadly, our broken world doesn’t always allow us a full “broadcast”. One day we hope to be given that podium, but as we struggle to rebuild and to defend our land, we still walk a moral tightrope. We all pray and hope that no more innocent victims suffer. Do Ukrainians Deserve Our Pity? This issue has also become a moral minefield. After all, Ukrainians viciously colluded with Nazis in their genocidal attack against our people. Additionally, vicious antisemitism still runs rampant in many parts of this country. How can we feel compassion for a “people” who murdered us in the past, and hate us in the present? The answer to this important question is twofold. Firstly, nations can perform teshuva, just as individuals can. Germany itself performed teshuva, becoming the leading supporter of Israel in Western Europe. Though vile antisemitism still exists it doesn’t reflect the policies of the Ukrainian government. Yonah and the story of Ninveh remind us that teshuva isn’t limited to individuals and isn’t limited to Jews. Furthermore, Ukraine, annually hosts tens of thousands of Jewish pilgrims to Uman. Undoubtedly, there is financial incentive to this accommodation, however, the Torah instructs us to appreciate hospitality of all forms. Unlike other barred nations, Egyptians have a pathway to Jewish conversion and aren’t to be militarily “baited”. This preferential treatment is compensation for the Egyptians hosting us for two centuries. No one in their right mind would award the Egyptians a

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

five-star rating for their treatment of Jews, yet the Torah acknowledges their hospitality. Dismissing the Ukrainians as Nazi collaborators and antisemites, ignores the passing of generations, the possibility of teshuva, and changed political realities. More importantly than the “grade” we assign to the current country of Ukraine, Jews never wish suffering upon “our enemies”. We are tasked with drawing humanity closer to G-d and, one day we will inspire the entire world. The world is our audience not our enemies. Obviously, people who actively attack our people must be thwarted, but we never wish lethal harm to those who oppose us- even if their opposition is voiced in spite and hatred. We hope that they fail. We pray for their tongues to be tied, not their wrists. Wishing physical suffering to our ideological opponents, is a betrayal of our mission to deliver prosperity to the world. War? ….In Europe? Modern society has evolved to become more civil and less violent. Education, mutual interests and strategic alliances have created international harmony and universal consensus. Evil has been almost completely eradicated. Recovering from the horrors of the 20th century, Western civilization sometimes adopts a fiction that war has become a relic of the past. Wars are waged in the uncivilized third world or in the deserts of Arab rivalries, but not in enlightened and liberated Europe. The “Amalek command” reminds us that evil will always exit, until the end of history. There are evil people in our world, and we must never forget that nor allow progress to lull us into a state of naivete. Modern man sometimes loses the ability to identify evil as pure evil. Putin’s lunacy and bloodletting reminds us that evil always lurks and can sabotage decades of human progress. The Amalek battle is perennial. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

The War of Amalek – Yehoshua and Mordechai BY RAV YOSEF ZVI RIMON

When Moshe hears that Amalek is attacking Israel, he does not gear up for battle, but sends Yehoshua: “And Moshe said to Yehoshua... go to battle against Amalek.” (Shemot 17:9) Why did he not go out to fight himself? Our Sages discussed this in the Mechilta, saying that because Moshe sent Yehoshua to fight, rather than going himself, his hands became heavy, “Due to his indolence regarding this mitzvah and his appointing another [Yehoshua] instead – his hands became heavy.” However, we find another answer in the Midrash: “Could it be that Moshe stood and told Yehoshua to go to war with Amalek? Rather, there is a tradition that Esav’s sons will only fall in the hands of Rachel’s sons.” (Mechilta D’Rashbi 71) And we ask yet again: Why is it specifically the sons of Rachel who defeat Amalek? The answer to all this lies in the nature

and character of Amalek. Amalek does not believe in G-d’s providence in the world, as our Sages state that Amalek’s ideology was that of chance: “who have met you by chance along the way” (Esther Rabbah 8). Amalek sees miracles happening to Israel, but explains them as natural occurrences. Amalek sees the parting of the Red Sea, but explains it as a natural tidal event, which occurred only by chance. Amalek believed Israel merely had a ‘lucky strike’; that their victory over Egypt was but a coincidence, unlikely to happen again. Therefore, Amalek is not afraid to battle Israel. Yosef is Rachel’s son, and his descendants are the ones who can fight Amalek, because that is the essence of Yosef, who felt G-d’s providence every moment of his life (except for one incident at the end of Parashat Vayeshev). Both when talking to his brothers and to the Egyptians, Yosef mentions G-d again and again. Yosef not only tries, but also succeeds, in instilling in the nations of the world the reality of G-d. Pharaoh says of Yosef: “Could we

Vayikra / Zachor

Sidra Summary knife. It was also possible to bring an offering from fine flour (mincha), a handful of which was mixed with oil and thrown onto the altar’s fire. The rest was baked and eaten by the Kohanim. Point to Consider: From what stage could the service of the meal offering be performed only by Kohanim (see Rashi to 2:2)

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 1:1-13

The Book of Vayikra starts by detailing the olah (elevation) offering. One who brought an offering had to lay their hands upon it (semicha). The shechita (slaughter) of the animal could be done by a non-Kohen, but the processes thereafter (catching the blood and sprinkling it on the altar) were performed only by the Kohanim. The olah offering was cut up and all of the pieces were burned on the mizbeach (altar). The verses detail an olah offering brought from cattle, sheep or goats.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 1:14-2:6

The Torah now details the laws of an olah offering brought from fowl. The process of killing the fowl differed from an animal offering; notably, the Kohen used his fingernail (melika) instead of a

find another like him, a man with the spirit of G-d?” (Bereishit 41:38). This statement of Pharaoh is obviously a result of Yosef’s repetitive mentioning of G-d. Therefore, Yehoshua, who is of Rachel’s lineage, is suitable for this leadership role. Indeed, eventually it is Yehoshua who brings Israel into the Promised Land, where Divine Providence operates within the framework of nature. This idea can be learned from the Midrash (Shemot Rabbah 26): “Why to Yehoshua? He said to him: Your elder [Yosef] said: ‘I fear the Almighty’; let the son of he who said that, defeat he of whom it is said ‘and he did not fear G-d’ (Amalek). The Book of Esther, too, is entirely natural. Even the name of G-d is not mentioned in the Megillah. Mordechai commands the observance of the days of Purim, and by this the people come to an awareness that even things that may seem natural, are led by G-d. Is a hidden miracle worth less than a visible miracle? On the one hand, it lacks

the might and surprise of a visible miracle. However, on the other hand, G-d is revealed within reality, within nature. He does not have to ‘break’ nature in order to be revealed. There is a difficulty in recognizing a hidden miracle, as it comes on top of our own actions. Indeed, our goal is to act within nature, and at the same time to feel that G-d is the one behind everything. Haman and Today’s Battle Against Amalek BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN

After an overwhelming week at work, Daniel decides to go on a nature hike to recharge. Without letting anyone know of his plans, he heads off into the mountains. As he is enjoying the view and the peaceful quiet around him, he suddenly slips and tumbles off the edge of a cliff. He plunges downwards, but somehow manages to grasp onto a branch jutting out of the cliff face. He clings to the branch for dear life, trying not to look down at the ravine below. As his life flashes before his eyes, he is struck by a disheartening thought: “I am alone. Nobody knows I am here, and I have no way of escaping. I am going to die.” He begins to take stock of his life, thinking about the good times he’s had and what he has managed to accomplish in his short existence. He thinks about his family, and how much they are going to miss him. Just then, a rope soars past his head, hanging directly in front of him. After a moment’s shock, he grabs the rope and holds on for dear life as someone on the other end begins to pull him up over the cliff edge. As Daniel reaches the top, he is still gasping and amazed at the fact that he just survived. He immediately asks the man who saved him, “How did you know that I was hanging off the edge of the cliff and needed rescuing?” The man stares back at him blankly and says, “I didn’t. This morning, I randomly decided to practice throwing ropes over cliff faces.” There are two reactions that Daniel can have to this series of events. He can recognize the miracle that just occurred, thanking God for sending him salvation when all hope seemed lost. Or he can laugh at the unlikely coincidence that this man decided to practice rope-throwing the same exact day that he fell over a cliff face, thankful that he happened to get lucky this time. This is the exact decision we face in every moment and aspect of life, and this theme runs through the entire Purim story.

HAMAN AND OUR BATTLE AGAINST AMALEK

As we encounter Purim and our victory over Haman, let us delve deeper into the unique spiritual and existential battle that the Jewish People must continue to wage against the philosophy of Amalek. As a descendant of Amalek, Haman continued their legacy of Jewish obliteration. As the Maharal explains, Amalek rejects Hashem’s connection to this world or any connection between the spiritual and the physical. Essentially, Amalek denies Hashem’s control of this world and the ability for man to uplift himself to the level of the spiritual. Torah is the

epitome of both of these principles, and it provides the guidelines for how to achieve this spiritual elevation. It is based on the axiom of Hashem’s connection with this world, and it is the means for elevating ourselves and all of physicality to a higher purpose. Amalek stands in direct opposition to this, and when they saw that the Jewish People were ready to adopt the Torah way of life, they had no choice but to attack. Amalek’s entire existence is predicated on a lack of connection between Hashem and this world, therefore an acceptance of that principle would mean the cessation of Amalek’s existence. Amalek therefore attacked the Jewish People in order to prevent Matan Torah — to stop the world from accepting Hashem’s Torah and the truth that lies within it. Let us delve deeper into the spiritual nature of Haman in order to understand our battle against Amalek on an even deeper level.

“HA’MIN HA’EITZ” — THE SOURCE OF HAMAN

The essence of Haman, the person who most potently expressed the characteristics and mission of Amalek, is revealed in a very strange discussion in the Gemara (Chullin 139b). The Gemara asks, “Where is Haman found in the Torah?” Before we discuss the Gemara’s answer, it is essential that we fully understand the nature of this question. After all, Haman was a man, not a halachic principle, so why is it important to find a source for Haman in the Torah? Torah is not simply a guide to living a life of truth; it is the blueprint and DNA of this physical world. In other words, our physical world is a projection and emanation of the deep spiritual reality described in the Torah. This is the meaning behind the famous Midrash that says, “Istakel b’Oraisa u’bara alma — [Hashem] looked into the Torah and used it to create the world” (Bereishis Rabbah 1:1). Torah is the blueprint of the world; the physical world is an emanation and expression of Torah, the spiritual root of existence. To illustrate this concept, imagine a projector. The image that you see on the screen emanates from the film in the projector so that everything you see on the screen is simply an expression of what is contained within the film. So too, every single thing that we see and experience in the physical world stems from the spiritual world — the transcendent dimension of Torah. This is what the Gemara means by “Where is Haman found in the Torah?” Haman’s spiritual root as well must be found within the Torah, and by understanding this source, we can understand his spiritual nature and purpose. The Gemara answers: “Ha’min ha’eitz.” Ha’min shares the letters as Haman.

Right after Adam and Chavah sinned, they were embarrassed, so they hid behind a bush. Hashem then asks them, “Ha’min ha’eitz — Did you eat from the tree?” (Bereishis 3:11). Let us try to understand the profound meaning of this Gemara. Before Adam sinned, he was on an angelic level, almost perfect. He saw reality through a crystal-clear lens; his body itself was transcendent, and he lived in the spiritual realm of Gan Eden. However, once Adam sinned, his entire existence, his body, and the world itself fell to a lower, incomparably more physical level. The physical no longer revealed the spiritual; it now hid it instead. Once he ate from the Eitz HaDaas, his spiritual vision became distorted and he became confused. At this point, he does the impossible: he hides from Hashem. The problem is obvious: How can Adam expect to hide from Hashem? He knows fully well that this is impossible, but he does so because he is confused. Evil and doubt have become mixed into his very self. While he knows this behavior is ridiculous, a small voice of doubt within him whispers, “Maybe it is possible to hide from Hashem.” In fact, it was the very shame and embarrassment of having eaten from the Eitz HaDaas that made him want to hide from Hashem. He was hiding from the truth — from the consequences of his actions. However, deep down, Adam hoped that Hashem would come and tell him that everything will be okay, that Adam would be able to recreate the closeness to Hashem that he previously possessed, and that everything would go back to the way it was. This was the true pain of Hashem’s response: “Ayekah — Where are you?” “Ha’min ha’eitz — [Did you eat] from the tree?” The moment Adam acts as if Hashem can’t see him, i.e., the moment he relates to Hashem with doubt and uncertainty, Hashem responds in kind. This is because Hashem relates to us in exactly the way we relate to him. As the pasuk says, “Hashem tzilcha — Hashem is your shadow (Tehillim 121:5).” However you relate to Hashem, He will mirror (Nefesh Hachaim 1:7). Ayekah, a question of doubt and uncertainty, would become the foundation for all of history. Ayekah has the same letters as “Eichah,” the Megillah we read describing the destruction of the Jewish People’s connection with Hashem. Our destruction is the direct result of denying Hashem’s connection to the world, acting as if He does not see what occurs here. The question of “Ha’min ha’eitz” is the source of Haman, the source of Amalek, the source of all doubt and uncertainty in this world. Hashem asks, “Did you eat from the tree?” as if He does not know. It is this question itself that represents the gap between us and Hashem, a gap that Amalek battles to

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

keep open, a gap that the Jewish People must forever strive to close.

WHY ISN’T HASHEM MENTIONED IN THE MEGILLAH?

Megillas Esther is unique in that it is one of the only books in Tanach in which Hashem’s name is not mentioned. This is because Purim marks a transition in history, when our battle against Amalek manifested in a new form. Until Purim, history was permeated with consistent open miracles, nevuah was common, and Hashem was openly revealed in the world. The second stage, ushered in by Purim, is characterized by hidden miracles. In our present world, Hashem is no longer openly manifest and clearly visible. In this stage, we must choose to see Hashem within the darkness — to peer past the façade of a meaningless world. It is in this stage that Amalek’s claims are all the more tempting to believe, as it is so easy to ignore Hashem’s involvement in this world. Our challenge is to see past the surface, to see the miraculous within the natural, the ethereal within the mundane, and the infinite within the finite.

A TIMELESS BATTLE

Amalek fights for a God-less reality, devoid of spirituality and meaning; a world of Haman, of doubt, where a gap exists between us and Hashem. Only when you look closer, deepening your gaze, do you see the deeper layer of reality, the transcendent root. Hashem is echad one - and our goal is to see the spiritual oneness inherent within every event and object in this world. Amalek seeks to hide the truth, to disconnect us from our Source, and thus to strip all meaning from life. Only when we see past the surface, when we trace everything that happens in this world back to Hashemour spiritual Source, will we ultimately defeat Amalek and all that they stand for. Parshat Vayikra:

What Does Esther have to do with Korbanot? BY GAVRIEL COHN

Is there any connection between Purim and Parshat Vayikra? Animal offerings are one of the central topics of Sefer Vayikra: “When a person from among you will bring an offering to God from his animals, cattle, or sheep, he shall bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting before God; it shall be considered pleasing for him to cleanse him. The Kohanim shall bring the blood and throw the blood around the Alter, they shall skin the animal… and arrange the pieces, its head and its fats, on the wood that is on the fire upon the Alter… and cause it to go up in smoke… a pleasant fragrance for God…” Many reasons have been advanced to explain the purpose of sacrifices in Judaism, why we need to slaughter an animal to atone for our sins. Some of these proposals created tremendous controversy and debate in the Jewish world (I wrote about that last year!). However perhaps, broadly speaking, a key purpose of animal sacrifices is

Vayikra RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

ADAM WAS NO THIEF

The beginning of Sefer Vayikra gives Adam a mention (Lev. 1:2). G-d calls Moses and tells him what to do if “Adam ki yakriv mikkem” (literally, “if any man of you) brings a sacrifice to G-d”. Rashi says we can learn from this that anyone who brings a sacrifice must be like Adam, who did not steal anybody else’s property because there was nobody else on earth. Hence one cannot and must not steal something that belongs to another person and then offer it to G-d as a sacrifice. The whole principle of sacrifice is that everything you have derives directly from G-d and must be acknowledged as such. The important thing is not that the offering gives G-d a gift – does G-d want to be a rich property owner? – but it gives thanks to the Almighty Giver of all things.

A CORPORATE SIN

It is not only the individual who, when necessary, brings a sin-offering to G-d. The community as a whole can go astray and need Divine forgiveness. Chapter 4 of Vayikra says (verse 13), “If the whole congregation of Israel shall err… and do any of the things which the L-rd commanded not to be done…” On Rosh HaShanah we have a section

resoundingly clear, and is also a central message of the Purim story: that the legacy of our lives depends on what we do, our choices shape our lives and give them meaning. Slaughtering an animal, burning it’s fat and blood, serves as a substitute for sacrificing ourselves. “Let one creature come and atone for another” quips Rashi. In the sobering reflective words of the Ramban: “A person should realize that when he commits a serious crime, his blood should really be spilled and his body burned were it not for the loving-kindness of the Creator Who took from him a substitute and a ransom, namely this animal; its life stands in place of his own.” When a person offers a sacrifice, he has to repent and regret his sins. Then he takes an animal he has cared for and raised, and slaughters it

almost in his stead. Animal offerings are a way of realising the severity and weight of our actions, how sometimes our very lives can depend on whether we do the right thing or not. Queen Esther is perhaps the personification of this idea. As Rav Aharon Lichtenstein charts, Esther began her life passive and unassertive. Later she is reluctant to intercede for the Jewish people, fearful of approaching Achashverosh. Mordechai has to push her. He rings out to her with some of the most powerful words in all of Tanach: “Do not imagine to yourself that you will escape in the king’s palace from among all the Jews. If you remain silent at this time, relief and rescue will arise for the Jews from elsewhere, and you and your father’s household will perish; who knows whether for a time like this you reached royalty.”

Animal offerings are a way of realising the severity and weight of our actions, how sometimes our very lives can depend on whether we do the right thing or not. of the Musaf service which speaks of G-d remembering the deeds of nations and communities. Commenting on today’s sidra, Rashi utilises the Midrash to suggest that even the Great Sanhedrin is capable of sinning. If we move the discussion to our own much later generation, we see that even leaders can go wrong, even people who are known for their political capacity, even wise people who normally decide wisely. No-one – and no community – is always right. No-one can manage without submitting their thoughts, ideas and plans to the One who made us all.

BRINGING AN OFFERING

The root of “korban”, “an offering” is a verb that means to come near. The person who brought an offering to the sanctuary was determined to come near to G-d. Maimonides regarded sacrifices as a means of leading Israel to abandon the

ways of the environment and cleave to G-d alone. Animals were deities – sheep were the gods of Egypt, cattle the gods of India, and so on. The ideal would have been an instant command to cease all idolatrous practices forthwith, but gradually weaning the people off such usages seemed better. Sheep and cattle could remain in the worship system, but they were to be visibly subjected to G-d’s rulership. Abravanel backed Maimonides by quoting a Midrash that said, “A king saw that his son was enjoying forbidden meat, so the father said, ‘Let him eat at my table and he will give up that bad habit’.” Other commentators profoundly disagreed; Nachmanides, for instance, said that the sacrifices were part of the mystique of the heavenly realms. When we have no Temple or sacrificial

Esther then became an active fearless leader, the figure who was almost single handedly responsible for Haman’s downfall. If she had not done the right thing, Mordechai warned her, her name would have perished, her life’s legacy would have been disappeared. Such is also the lesson of the korbanot. These animals’ fate shows us just how powerful our actions are, the significance of doing a transgression, one could almost perish or ruin our legacy. Esther, however, changed her actions and rose to greatness. After each sacrifice, we too are meant to make better choices. These animal offerings act like Mordechai’s desperate pleas, “change your ways, don’t perish with bad choices; perhaps to do good is the reason we are alive!” Yet it’s not all doom and gloom. It is the animal that is offered up, not us. By bringing korbanot, we are simply and helpfully jolted, just like Queen Esther was, to be re-empowered to do what’s right, to act only pleasantly towards God and our fellow man. Talking to your teen about the tragedy in Ukraine BY PSYCHOTHERAPIST RABBI YAAKOV BARR (MSC PG DIP)

With all the disturbing news stories coming out of Ukraine, the world is struggling to deal with the tragedy unfolding in a country with thousands of Jews, as well as the dangerous repercussions that this war could potentially bring. When a young child is worried or feeling sad, it doesn’t usually take much to make them feel better. Yet, when it is a teenage child feeling the same way, it is unlikely to be as simple. Parents often feel powerless when dealing with a worried or unhappy teen. Too often, they feel that the correct way is to either withdraw from their teenagers’ issues or invade their private space. In reality the influence and appropriate involvement of parents is crucial in helping a teenager navigate difficult situations which they encounter. Here are some ways talking can help your teen cope with the current news events.

1. QUALITY TALKING.

If you suspect that your teenager is anxious, or perhaps you are concerned by some behaviours and emotions they are displaying, then in a loving and non-judgmental way, share your concerns with your teenager. Let him/her know what you’ve noticed and why it concerns you. Then encourage your child to share what he/she is going through. Teenagers will often be reluctant to open up. They may be ashamed and afraid of being misunderstood and may find it extremely difficult to express in language what they are feeling. Many times, I have heard teenagers tell me that their parents start giving advice and criticism as soon as they start sharing their feelings. So, try to hold back from asking lots of questions and making it feel like an interrogation, and instead make it clear that you’re ready and willing to provide whatever emotional support they need. Don’t give up if your adolescent shuts you out at first. Talking about negative feelings is difficult for most of us and especially for teenagers. Try and show your teenager that you care and are willing to listen. If your teen claims that nothing is wrong, then perhaps monitor him/her for a few more days and if concerned then be willing to have another conversation.

2. VALIDATION

Sometimes a teenager will feel alone and confused. The reasons for their misery may seem trivial to a parent, but for the teen, these feelings are real. At moments

Many times, I have heard teenagers tell me that their parents start giving advice and criticism as soon as they start sharing their feelings. So, try to hold back from asking lots of questions and making it feel like an interrogation… like this, the challenge as a parent is to convey your unconditional love for them, no matter what the situation is. It may entail talking to them at length, validating their feelings and opinions and then perhaps demonstrating your affections with a hug. They may resist it at first, because they are uncomfortable or because they feel they are burdening you but reassure them of your unconditional love and listen as much as possible. Of course, the stronger your ‘everyday’ relationship with your teen is, the easier it is to deal with the more testing issues that occur.

3. TRY TO MIRROR CALM AND STABILITY

Try to seem calm even if you don’t feel it. Our children are looking to us for how we respond to disturbing news stories. It’s ok if we don’t have all the answers and although we might not feel it inside, children should see parents acting confidently. Try keep the daily routine going and deliberately steer conversations at times to other topics other then the ongoing conflict.

4. UNDERSTAND THEIR FEAR

As parents, we tend to assume that our children are worried about the same

things we are, but often they are not. When they raise their concerns be curious and try to understand what’s truly worrying them. For instance, if your child asks a question like “Is this World War III?”, you could ask: “What do you mean by that?” Or “What specifically is scaring you?”

5. DON’T BRING IT UP IF YOUR TEEN SEEMS UNINTERESTED.

Some children will be fascinated by the Ukraine conflict and will want to know more, but others may show no interest at all – and that’s fine. Some parents feel that their children should be fully aware of current events, whilst others will shield them as much as they can. When it comes to teenagers, we should leave it up to their own preference, but if they do want to know more than its vital that we are honest in describing the situation.

6. SUPPORT OTHER POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS.

For many reasons, parents may not be the people in whom a teenager will confide in when problems arise. Therefore, the importance for a teenager to be exposed to other caring adults they can trust

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

cannot be overemphasised. If your teen is struggling with what is going on in the world then encourage them to reach out to someone they feel comfortable with, a teacher, mentor, family friend etc.

7. JTEEN

Sometimes a teen will not want to expose their feelings to people they know. The fear of being judged is too great. Encourage them to contact Jteen- an anonymous and confidential text helpline where volunteer counsellors and therapists will help your teen process their difficult thoughts and emotions. The number to text is 07860 058 823

8. SEEKING HELP

It’s essential to seek professional help if your teen is showing some of the signs and symptoms of trauma, anxiety or depression. Depending on the available resources and how long it takes to set up an initial appointment, schedule an assessment for your teen with a GP or mental health professional who specialise in helping teenagers.

How is the terrible war in Ukraine affecting telecommunications? Can you still offer free roaming for calls there if all their infrastructure is down? The situation in Ukraine is absolutely devastating, it's also so heartwarming to see so many people coming together to support the many people who have been adversely affected by this tragic war! Communication is so important, and as we've seen over the last couple of weeks, so many people's lives have been saved by various communication elements being put to good use! This includes the use of social media to show the free world what is happening on the ground, thereby persuading hundreds of companies to stop trading with Russia, which will hopefully convince the Russians soon enough to cease their invasion. I'm quite hopeful that we'll see a Purim miracle and this war will be relegated to history, together with President Putin. We have joined with many communication brands to provide free calls to Ukraine and free roaming within Ukraine. Since we've offered it free of charge, the usage volume has actually shrunk considerably. We're attributing this to our clients based in or visiting Ukraine, having left the country. Ukraine is a tech powerhouse. Indeed the VoIP (office phone system) that we provide to many UK businesses, which is called Wildix, is based in Ukraine. Luckily the Wildix team took precautions and by the time the Russian invasion began, 80% of the workforce had already left Ukraine, for safer territory. I should also mention that the Wildix infrastructure is based in quite a few different countries, and in a time of crises like this, there has been a 100% uptime across the whole platform. Vayikra This week we begin the third book of the Torah! Parshas Vayikra is the first parsha in this book and the Jewish people are taught about the special Mitzvot involving Korbanot - when a person or a community would offer up an animal to Hashem. There were different occasions when these were brought up but each one was a chance to experience the holiness and happiness that surrounded the Kohanim, who spent their lives completely connected to Hashem. Sometimes an animal was brought and sometimes a bird. If a person was poor they were able to bring a meal offering mixing flour oil and salt. No honey was allowed nor was yeast, but eating in the Beit Hamikdash itself was no simple feast! Let us hope for the day that Mashiach brings all the Jewish people back to the Beit Hamikdash when we will experience all that holiness again.

Tangram Challenge! Using all the shapes on the left can you make the bird shape on the right?

“C

an you believe it? Purim is almost here!” shouted Hadassa as she burst into the kitchen after arriving home from school. “I am going to be a princess,” said Rivki proudly. “Ima got me a dress and tiara.” “I have so much to do,” said Hadassa. “I need to organise a costume and write a list of people to give shlach manos to.” “Don’t forget, you also have your school mystery mishoach manos to do. I bought you some nush already in that bag on the side,” Ima pointed to the parev counter. “Wow!” said Hadassa, inspecting the bag, this nush looks yummy! I had better go upstairs and carry on working on it before supper.” Hadassa rushed upstairs. This year she had picked Leah. She didn’t know much about her because they hadn’t been in the same primary school, but the teacher had very cleverly told everyone to write some of their interests on their name slips. Leah had written ‘singing Shwekey, anything princessy, GF.’ Hadassa didn’t know what GF meant, but she knew she could make a microphone out of a kitchen roll tube and some newspaper. She had already made the shape and now she just needed to paint it and put the nush inside. Hadassa climbed the stairs two at a time; this was homework she liked to do! Later on Ima called her down for supper. Hadassa brought down the microphone she had made for Leah.

Mystery Mishloach Manos “Wow,” said Abba, who was already seated at the table. “That looks amazing.” “Thank you,” Hadassa replied, feeling very pleased inside. The whole family sat down to a tasty meal of spaghetti and meatballs. While they were eating, Hadassa remembered the word ‘GF’ written on the note. “Abba, I’ve got this note here from the mystery mishloach manos and it says ‘GF’ on it. What does that mean? Was it a mistake?” Abba leaned over to take a look. “Ah,” he said, “that means Gluten-Free.” “What’s gluten free?” Rivki asked, looking up from her plate.

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

“It means that Leah can only eat foods that don’t contain any gluten. Things like pasta, bread, biscuits and cereal have ingredients in them that aren’t good for her.” “Oh no,”said Hadassa. “But the food Ima bought included biscuits, that means she won’t be able to eat them! I’ve worked so hard on this already, I don’t want to re-do it all!” “You know Hadassa, the point is not to give what we want to give, but to give what they would like to receive,” said Abba. “Don’t worry,” said Ima. “We still have time before Purim, so we can go back to the shops and find her some gluten free

g

goodies.” “Phew,” sighed Hadassa. Another week passed in a whirl of mishloach manos and costume preparations for Purim. Purim morning dawned and after davening and megillah reading it was time to deliver the mishloach manos they had worked so hard on. Mishpachat Greengold spent all morning delivering shlach manos to their neighbours and friends, including Leah’s, as well as giving lots of tzedaka. After Purim seuda that evening, everyone was taking off their costumes and getting ready for bed when the phone rang. “It’s for you,” called Ima to Hadassa. Hadassa ran to the phone. “Hi Hadassa, it’s Leah,” came a shy voice down the line. “Hi Leah, how are you? Did you have a good purim? I hope you liked the shlach manos I made for you.” “That’s why I am calling,” replied Leah. “I wanted to say thank you so much for the lovely gluten-free shlach manos. The microphone shape was amazing, but what was more amazing was to be given a shlach manos I can actually eat! People sometimes forget and I have to be really careful especially at Purim, but you made Purim so much nicer for me. Thank you!” “You are so welcome,” said Hadassa. She put down the phone smiling. It was a bit of extra work for her, but it brought a lot of extra happiness to Leah.
