Heads of State to attend King’s Coronation
BY DAVID SAFFER
100 Heads of State will attend the Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.
King Charles is the 40th reigning monarch crowned at the Abbey since 1066.
Joining The King and Camilla, the Queen Consort for the service will be over 2,200 people including Royal Family members, world leaders, politicians and representatives from 203 countries.
Prince William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince Harry will attend.
The King’s siblings, Anne, the Princess Royal and Edward, Duke of Edinburgh will also be present. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is expected to attend.
King Charles and Camilla’s grandchildren will be present, some taking part in the ceremony. Prince George will be one of several ‘pages of honour’.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be at the State occasion alongside cabinet ministers and House of Lords peers. US First Lady Jill Biden will represent US President Joe Biden.
The first Coronation for 70 years will see a shorter ceremony than Queen Elizabeth II’s in 1953.
The King will use historic items from the Royal Collection worn
Continued by previous monarchs at past Coronations. His Majesty will be crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Coronation Chair.
The King and Queen Consort will be seated in Chairs of Estate and Throne Chairs during the service.
The Chairs of Estate were made in 1953 for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. They will sit in the Throne Chairs for the Enthroning and Homage. These chairs were made for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937.
Security will be at its highest for the largest military ceremonial operation in seven decades. Over 6,000 members of the armed forces will be on duty.
To this end the Public Order Bill came into law yesterday giving police extra powers to act against ‘serious disruptions’ and interference to key national infrastructure.
The Act includes a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment or unlimited fine for ‘locking on’ to others, objects or buildings. Police stop and search powers have also been bolstered.
Police in London may attach conditions to a protest or prohibit a trespassory assembly.
Anti-monarchy groups, including Republic, will be able to protest at the coronation but are aware of legislation following details in a letter sent at the end of April by the Home Office’s Police Powers Unit.
Plans are set for 1,700 people to protest at Trafalgar Square on Saturday.
Minister of State for Security Tom Tugendhat confirmed on BBC’s Today programme that groups have the “liberty” to protest but not to “disrupt others”.
King Charles and Camilla have invited 850 community representatives in recognition of charity work including 450 British Empire Medal recipients and 400 young people selected by the Royal Family.
Thousands of veterans and NHS workers have been invited to watch the coronation.
