WORLD JEWRY MOURNS MERON TRAGEDY
BY DAVID SAFFER
YEHUDA GUETTA HY"D
Israel's government watchdog will conduct a widescale inquiry into the Lag B’Omer stampede at Mount Meron last week. An estimated 100,000 people had been celebrating the festival at the historic site when the worst civilian disaster in the State of Israel’s history resulted in 45 people being crushed to death and 150 injured, a number are hospitalised with serious injuries. State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman announced a special investigation would scrutinise the CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 Emergency workers amid the chaos following the tragedy

Meron victims mourned ar BY DAVID SAFFER The 45 victims of the Mount Meron Lag B’Omer stampede tragedy came from across Israel and around the world. Israel’s Forensic Institute identified all fatalities, aged nine to 65, by Sunday morning. Israeli victims came from Ashdod, Betar Illit, Beit Shemesh, Bnei Brak, Givat Shmuel, Haifa, Holon, Jerusalem, Modi’in Illit, Ramat Gan and Safed. Fatalities were also from the United States, Canada Argentina and the United Kingdom. Rabbi Moshe Bergman, 24, hailed from Manchester and had been married for 18 months. His parents flew out to Israel to sit shiva with his wife, Shira. Students are mourning the loss of colleagues at many yeshivot including Be’er Yisrael, Brisk, Mir, Heichal Yitzchak, Heichal Avraham, Hesder Yeshiva, Rinah Shel Torah, Ponevezh and Yesodot HaTorah. Among the students was Avraham Daniel Ambon, a 21-year-old Argentinian at Yeshivah Heichal Yitzchak in Jerusalem, who was the last victim to be laid to rest on Monday morning after family
members arrived in Israel. Rosh Yeshivah, HaGaon Rav Yisrael Landau, tearfully mourned the loss of all victims. Recalling that Avraham had been learning in Israel for four years, he reportedly told mourners, “Your parents sent you to Eretz Yisrael to learn Torah. We thought we’ll meet your parents under a tallis
Moshe Mordechai Elchad-Sharf, 12, and his elder brother Yosef Dovid, 18, also lost their lives in the disaster. Teenage victims included Yedidyia Chiyuis and Elazar Koltai who celebrated their barmitzvah in the past 12 months, Moshe Levy, 14, Nachman Kirshbaum, 15, Eliahu Cohen, 16, Yosef Yehuda Levi and Yishai Me’ulam, both 17 years of age,

Daniel (Donny) Morris and Eliezer Shlomo Zalman Leibowitz, both 19. Over a thousand people attended the funeral of Yedidya Chiyuis in Bnei Brak. Yedidya’s heartbroken father, Rabbi Avigdor Chiyuis, and 10-year-old brother, Shmuel Meir, were injured in the tragedy but released from hospital to attend the

service, arriving by ambulance. Rabbi Chiyuis reportedly told media outlets, “If Yedidya was here now in my place, he would have said one thing. Rabbosai, let’s unite. It’s the time, it’s the place. When there are tragedies, no one checks which kipah the other one has, or if he has a kipah or not. Everyone helps the other one out. Let’s unite. No Jew hates the other. We need to be united.” Shmuel Meir was extremely lucky to survive. He told reporters, “I fell and I knew that it could be that I wouldn’t be here anymore. I yelled ‘Shema Yisrael’ from my heart. Afterward when I realised that Hashem saved me, the first thing I did was call to the rescue services to save my father. Afterward, I told the police to search for my brother.” Rabbi Meir Elhadad’s sons, Moshe Mordechai, 12, and Yosef Dovid, 18 were buried at Meron. Their father, a popular travel agent in Jerusalem, reportedly said that his sons left the area after Yosef struggled with the massed crowds. Rabbi Moshe Tzarfati, 65, was the oldest victim and known as a spiritual figurehead for IDF soldiers. Hundreds of mourners attended his

Rabbi Tzarfati is survived by his wife, four children and 25 grandchildren. “He accompanied soldiers for several years,” his son, Shai, reportedly said. “He loved volunteering, he loved soldiers, he loved life. He was a young man in a 60-yearold’s body.” Joseph Singer, enlisted in the Netzach Yehuda battalion in 2005, he reportedly recalled, “He (Rabbi Tzarfati) was a father figure. He would come and breathe life into the soldiers who were under stress. Good words, food, attention. Things the soldiers lacked.” Numerous rabbis did not survive including Rabbi Dovid Kraus of Beit Shemesh, who is survived by his wife and nine children. His uncle, Ahreleh Sinai, said the family was devastated. “Shragi was a singer and a man of virtue but most of all he was an amazing dad to his five children, we must all reflect today and try to do good for the people of Israel,” he reportedly said. Family members struggled to contact loved ones at Meron with communications crashing down. Yisroel Bunim Diskind’s brother, Simcha, 23, was among the fatalities. Yisroel heard about his elder brother’s death through WhatsApp. “He was a happy person and most photographs of him show him with a big smile on his face,” he reportedly said. Rabbi Chanoch Solod, 52, of Ashdod, was the brother-in-law of United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler. “The tragedy of Klal Yisrael was also a family tragedy for us,” Eichler reportedly noted, adding thet Rabbi Solod was a “Chassid in all his actions”. “We searched for him the entire night in hope of locating him in one of the hospitals,” Eichler added.

Moshe’s smile lit up a room
Moshe Bergman z”l
BY COUNCILLOR RABBI ARNOLD SAUNDERS I have been authorised by the parents and family of the late Moshe Bergman ז”לto issue the following statement on their behalf. I am a neighbour, family friend, local rabbi and a ward councillor, (Kersal, Salford) ויבכו בני ישראל את משה. The family of האברך משה ברגמן ז”לwere devastated to learn that Moshe was a victim of the tragic accident that occurred at Meron in Ererz Yisroel on Lag Ba’omer הילולא דרשב”י last Friday. The agonising wait for news, after he had been declared missing, compounded the anguish. However, the family are מקבל דין שמיםand are sustained by their faith אמונהas well as the love and support of so many members of their wider family, friends and members of the local community. They appreciate the דברי נחמהand condolences that have been offered by so many people and organisations including national and local leaders and dignitaries.
Paying tribute to a wonderful and dedicated husband, son and brother, they noted, “His smile lit up a room and his סבר פנים יפותwas uplifting and inspiring. He was a true and devoted friend to so many. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He was modest and unassuming, studious and hard working. “We do not wish to apportion blame for what was a tragic accident. Of course, lessons must be learnt so that no family will have to suffer a similar tragedy in the future. We call upon the community both locally and in Israel to come together in a spirit of unity and reflection. “The family wish to thank authorities in Israel and the UK for their practical help and support – particularly local bereavement and welfare organisations such as Misaskim. The family request that their right to privacy be respected during the week if shiva and and beyond. וכל בית ישראל יבכו את השריפה אשר שרף ה Condolences may be sent to familybergmanshiva@gmail.com
A statement from the Bergman family Moshe Bergman z”l had such tremendous sensitivity towards others; he couldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings. If he thought that maybe he said something that might make someone feel bad, or look bad in others’ eyes, he would immediately ask mechila/ forgiveness. The other person would most probably not understand what he was asking מחילהfor! Everyone knew that it wasn’t worth talking to Moshe about public news that spoke badly about others; Moshe wouldn’t want to listen if it hinted bad about someone else. Moshe was careful not to talk in learning time; he was a GREAT schmoozer, but you had to wait until learning time was finished. Moshe picked up the entire level of R’ Kallus’s Kollel, and he was proud that the Kollel Deans had a very close connection with him. Whoever would like to make such a

When I asked – but such a special Moshe? Yes, davka Hashem takes מי שאין לו ’’רע, Hashem keeps close to Him those who don’t have bad, בלי מום. Recommendations to improve conditions were made but a 2011 report found they had been ignored. Noting that structures had been built without permits and access road’s routes were not in accordance with standards, he concluded, “If the proper action had been taken then, last week’s disaster would not have taken place.” The investigation will establish the actions of police and maintenance of the site. Steps to ensure festivities in the future are held safely to avoid another disaster will be made. Englman may review his enquiry should the government establishes an investigation. But his intention is to name those responsible. Criminal liability will be referred to Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, who has launched a Justice Ministry investigation into police conduct. The Northern District police are ready for a Police Internal Investigations Department’s inquiry. Lahav 433 National Fraud Investigations Unit will take part in the investigation that will include questioning of senior officials. Maj. Gen. Shimon Lavi, Commander of Israel Police northern district, took the blame in the aftermath of the disaster. "We were prepared for any eventuality, but the tragic event occurred,” he reportedly told reporters. “We are collecting evidence to help us find the truth.” Speaking this week about the police response, he reportedly told the media, "In these moments you learn about the value of friendship, the value of camaraderie and mutual responsibility. The Israel Police is an amazing organisation. It is one, large and united family. It is where you also learn about yourself.” Lavi added that he was proud of his cops and commanders. With emotions running high in Israel among politicians, Labor MK Omer Bar-Lev said the tragedy was a “colossal failure” of the Ministry of Public Security and Police. Otzma Yehudit Chairman, Itamar Ben-Gvir, held an opposing viewpoint, noting that it was “not yet time to point finger” until an investigation was carried out. Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai has publicly backed Lavi and stood firm to criticism.

"I won't let Israel Police become anybody's scapegoat for the continued misconduct of many different bodies that eventually blew up in the face of Israel Police which had to contain the event for years," Shabtai reportedly told a senior command meeting on Monday. "This is an unimaginably tragic event, the like of which the State of Israel has never seen before, the police under my command is a strong and professional organisation with high work ethic. I have no doubt that we will emerge from this crisis stronger. But we will not give up until we have learned and internalised what happened there and draw conclusions from it to ensure such an event will not happen again." Israel's Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau, who was present at the site at the time of the disaster, called on "all the people of Israel to unite and pray for the recovery of the injured." World leaders offered condolences. US President Joe Biden spoke with Netanyahu and said the United States stood ready to help as Israel responded to the disaster. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called Israel’s leader. Jordanian King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sent messages of condolence to Rivlin expressing sorrow for the tragedy. European and Gulf leaders also joined the list offering words of commiseration. Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, Conference of European Rabbis noted his “shock” over the catastrophe. In the UK, the Queen sent Rivlin a message of condolence. Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the incident as “devastating”, Johnson said

"I fully back the district commander and the commissioner, who did everything they could to prepare for the festival,” he reportedly said. “Together, we will empower the public and the police. Together, we will continue to work for the safety and security of the citizens of Israel.” Prime Minister Benjamnim Netanyahu has promised an “in-depth investigation”. Netanyahu was booed when he visited the site on Friday morning. Health Minister Yuli Edelstein visited casualties at Ziv Medical Center in Safed but would not apportion blame, "Now is not the time," he reportedly said. Netanyahu was at Rambam Hospital in Haifa and impressed by the care from medical staff. Israel held a national day of mourning on Sunday. Flags were at half-mask on public buildings, military bases and Israeli embassies around the world. Concerts and sporting events were postponed, a weekly cabinet meeting was cancelled. In Jerusalem, memorial candles were projected onto the Old City walls. In Tel
Aviv, City Hall was lit up with colours of the Israeli flag. Residents lit memorial candles at the Habima Square. Theories on what happened have dominated Israeli media the past week including accusations of organisers ignoring safety reports. Channel 13 published a report that the cause, according to witnesses, was one person suffering a heart attack at the front of the narrow passageway where the stampede occurred. Another theory is people exiting the site slipped causing hundreds to fall. The majority of eye witnesses said that police officers closed a gate that was usually opened, thereby creating an overflow of people in one direction with no exit. Netanyahu, on initially hearing the news of the stampede, described it as a "heavy disaster”. He also called for the State of Israel to unite with the grief of families and pray for the wounded. President Reuven Rivlin lit 45 candles at his official residence in honour of the victims. He noted, “This is a terrible, painful day. A heartbreaking tragedy. Our prayers and thoughts are with those injured and with the families of those killed and missing in the awful tragedy.” He added, "I send my

Israel’s Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely thanked the Prime Minister and “all those who have sent their support and condolences in this difficult time”. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden were “deeply saddened” and were joined by senior Conservatives in sending condolences on Twitter. CFI’s Parliamentary Chairman, Stephen Crabb, commented, "Incredibly sad and horrific event for Israel. This festival should have been a happy day across the country.” Over 900 people around the world participated in an evening of prayer and mourning with the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue on Sunday night. Ambassador Hotovely and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis offered powerful words of comfort following the tragedy, Rebbetzen Freda Kaplan gave a reflection from Israel, Rabbi Liss led prayers. “I can see how many people want to show solidarity with the people of Israel after this horrible tragedy,” said Israel’s emissary. “This tragedy was an international one, the whole world was shocked.” Chief Rabbi Mirvis called on everyone to

Throughout this week there has been stories of survival against the odds. Rav Menachem Mendel Moskovitz, of Tzfat is the youngest son of the Shotzer Rebbe and was discovered unconscious by rescue services who flew him to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. Rav Moskovitz and his 13-year-old son were pushed into the passageway where the disaster occurred. Struggling to breath, he could hear his son screaming for help. The Rav recalled reciting Shema Yisrael with his son whilst others fell silent. Describing it as “the most frightening silence”, though trapped, he could hear rescue services then lost consciousness. Waking up 24 hours later, he couldn’t speak but wrote down on paper if his son was alive. He was, and Rav Moskovitz is recovering. Rescue Services and Magen David Adom attended the scene but evacuation was hampered by the huge numbers. When news of the stampede was broadcast globally cellular networks in the area crashed with worried families attempting to contact relatives. Witnesses spoke of mobile phones constantly ringing. ZAKA volunteer Haim Spielberg reportedly told media outlets that the tragedy had been one of the most difficult disasters he had dealt with and experienced. “Everywhere, there were cries for help,” he recalled. “Medics and paramedics were administering CPR.” He added, "While we were working at the scene, it was so distressing to hear the constant ringing of the cellphones of the deceased. Tears flowed from my eyes when I saw the words Dad or Mum on the phone screen.” ZAKA Northern District Commander, Rabbi Anshel Friedman, recited Kaddish with volunteers working through the night. Hatzalah spokesman Avi Markus told reporters rescue teams witnessed many people in a state of shock. Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor, Yossi Daitsh, had experienced crushing three hours before the stampede. "It is a miracle that no other such tragedies occurred,” Daitsh reportedly said. “I know how much effort the police put into securing the event and I do not want to lay blame.” "I told the policemen that those narrow bottle necks would cause a disaster,” he added. “I told them to take the right precautions. There was a sense of chaos and lack of order.” Across Israel, long queues formed to donate blood outside MDA stations. There were also offers of help from groups and local councils to find missing persons, recite psalms and provide hospitality. Hatzor HaGlilit regional council set up a center to provide accommodation for people stranded over Shabbat. And Druze communities offered to host people. The Zarzir local council, home to Bedouin Arabs, set up a kosher refreshment station while Ezer Mizion opened a command center to help find missing people with a telephone hotline. El Al offered to bring parents, siblings, children and spouses from any country they operated direct flights to Israel up to two tickets with the payment of port taxes only.

CAA criticise Labour inconsistencies over antisemitism BY ADAM MOSES Campaign Against Antisemitism has yet to be assured that the Labour Party has got to grips with antisemitism in its ranks. The first “key monitoring date” in the Party’s much publicised ‘Action Plan’ agreed with the Equality and Human Rights Commission regarding antisemitism in the Party has been reached. The EHRC report found that Labour had unlawfully discriminated against and harassed Jews. Labour leader Keir Starmer called the publication of the report a “day of shame” for the Party. CAA note that Labour has engaged with stakeholders in the Jewish community and established an Advisory Board on antisemitism. But it is understood to have been achieved “selectively”. A CAA spokesman noted, “Sir Keir’s repeated refusal to engage with us despite our being the complainant in the EHRC’s investigation into antisemitism in his Party and Labour’s failure even to acknowledge
our complaints against MPs, do not reflect a leadership wholly willing to address past failures.” The Party was required, by this stage, to have published “at least one performance report”. Labour discharged this requirement earlier this year, in part, but according to CAA, it contained ambiguities that made it “difficult to assess”. CAA also noted that whilst the Party had published a Complaints Handling Handbook, and there were some “welcome improvements”, the process was labelled “largely a disappointment”. CAA cited a Labour member posting Hitler, Nazi and Holocaust metaphors in debates about Israel-Palestine breaching the International Definition of Antisemitism in “possibly multiple ways”. They also noted issues with formal warnings and antisemitism training. Labour was due by now to have demonstrated to the EHRC that it had completed its “clearing of the backlog” of antisemitism cases. A CAA spokesman commented, “It is

BY ADAM MOSES A police officer found guilty of being a member of banned neo-Nazi terrorist group National Action has received a fouryear jail sentence. Benjamin Hannam, 22, from Edmonton in North London, has been dismissed by the Metropolitan Police for gross misconduct following his conviction. Campaign Against Antisemitism has welcomed the ruling. “We applaud Counter Terrorism Command for its investigation of this very troubling case, as well as the CPS for prosecuting it and the court for delivering an appropriate sentence,” Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement said. “Public confidence in
the police depends on holding officers to a high standard and zero tolerance of farright or neo-Nazi infiltration. The verdict and sentence in this disturbing case sends exactly the right message.” Silverman noted that National Action is proscribed as a terrorist organisation and viewed as a “considerable threat”. He added, “Its members are indoctrinated to kill and instructed in the use of weapons. Hannam posed as someone who would protect the public, when in fact he was a member of a dangerous far-right terrorist organisation.” Last year, it was alleged Hannam belonged or professed to belong to the National Action between December 2016 and January 2018 and that he falsely represented himself in his application to join the Met Police. Hannam is the first police officer to be convicted of far-right terrorism after being found guilty at the Old Bailey of membership in National Action. He was guilty of lying on his application to join the police, possessing guides to knife-fighting and bombmaking. It is understood the ban on reporting the case was lifted after Hannam admitted possessing an indecent image of a child. Hannam, who reportedly has autism, was apparently “desperate to impress” an older National Action organiser but ended his association with the organisation before joining the Police. Sentencing Hannam at the Old Bailey, Judge Anthony Leonard QC told him he had “harmed public trust in the police” by his deceit. Other National Action members were recently convicted and sentenced to prison for their role in the organisation.

difficult to see how the Party can do so before introducing an independent disciplinary system, which it has said it will not do until later this year.”
CAA, meantime, has submitted numerous complaints against MPs to be investigated when the independent system is in place. But the Party has not acknowledged the complaints. “The only indication that the Party has taken any action whatsoever was a report that our complaint against Deputy Leader Angela Rayner was dismissed out of hand earlier this year,” CAA noted. Joe Glasman, CAA Head of Political Investigations, reflecting on the milestone, commented. “Progress has been marked by inconsistencies, lack of transparency and potential burying of awkward issues.” He added, “Only in the last few weeks, we have seen perplexing disciplinary outcomes, a member of an antisemitism-denial group chair a disciplinary panel, and now Labour has embarrassingly scrubbed its ‘best practice’ case studies from its Complaints Handling Handbook after we and others highlighted their absurdity. At this first major juncture in the Action Plan, we are yet to be reassured that the Party is capable of getting to grips with its antisemitism problem.”
Labour and Conservative Peterborough parliamentary candidates suspended BY ADAM MOSES A number of Peterborough parliamentary candidates representing the Labour and Conservative Party have been accused of antisemitism resulting in suspensions. The Peterborough Constituency Labour Party (CLP) has reportedly suspended 14 individuals, seven were local councillors, for allegedly harbouring and sharing antisemitic videos and opinions, including that Labour leader Keir Starmer is under “Zionist control”. A Labour spokesperson said the decision reflected the Party’s determination to “root out all forms of antisemitism” from the party. It was also testament to a “commitment to zero tolerance” not to be influenced by an election timetable. Names of those suspended from Peterborough CLP reportedly include Cllr Ansar Ali, Richard Stargward, Cllr Angus Ellis, Colin and Linda Watson, Cllr Samantha Hemraj, Kit Hubback and Cllr Mahboob Hemraj. Cllr Shabina Qayyum, Cllr Aasiayah Joseph and Cllr Mohammed Jamil, also from Peterborough CLP, have reportedly been suspended. It is understood by Campaign Against Antisemitism that Janet Armstrong and Jonathan Orchard were suspended from North Cambridgeshire CLP. The Conservative Party, meantime, in Peterborough have reprimanded members accused of antisemitism. Cllr Muhammed Ikram was alleged to have shared an antisemitic article that propagated the idea that Israel was enacting a “Final Solution” in Gaza. Cllr
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Mohammed Nadeem was said to have shared videos from a hate preacher who is banned from entering the UK. Ishfaq Hussain, a Conservative candidate running in Dogsthorpe, is understood to have been suspended. He recently apologised for sharing antisemitic tropes on Facebook. Posts allegedly included, “Islam doesn’t breed terrorists the zionist trilogy do.” Hussain also shared a video captioned, “The Jews in Israel are not true Jews.” In his apology, Hussain reportedly said, “I recognise Israel’s right to exist and wholeheartedly support a two-state solution. I deeply regret that my frustration at events in Israel and Palestine led me to suggest otherwise. Some of my previous language was ill-judged and offensive. It also echoed antisemitic tropes in ways I had not fully understood. However strongly we feel, we should never let our emotions get the better of us. By doing so, I allowed myself to become part of the problem. I am truly sorry.” A CAA spokesperson said, “It is encouraging to see both the Labour and Conservative Parties taking action against local councillors and members in Peterborough accused of antisemitism. In this instance, Labour has been particularly proactive in issuing suspensions in spite of looming local elections, although any investigations must be delayed until the Party introduces an independent disciplinary system later this year. Conservative action in this instance leaves considerable room for improvement. Slaps on the wrist are no substitute for zero tolerance of antisemitism.”

CAA & AAD applaud Chelsea FC over 10-year fan ban BY DAVID SAFFER Campaign Against Antisemitism and Action Against Antisemitism have welcomed Chelsea FC announcing it has banned a football fan from matches for 10 years over abusive hate messages. Sam Mole, 20, from Kettering, posted antisemitic and homophobic messages to freelancer Dan Levene. One message wished the Jewish journalist would die, another lamented that he had not been killed in the Holocaust. Further abusive messages had also been sent by Mole from another account that Twitter suspended. Mole took issue with Levene’s stance in opposition to antisemitic chanting by some fans of the club. CAA offered Levene support over horrendous online postings. “Chelsea should be applauded for banning an abusive troll,” CAA noted. “This announcement sends a powerful message that antisemitism in football and online must not be tolerated.” They added, “Football clubs walking out of social media over online hate is one thing, but backing it up with strong action like this is the strongest antidote.” Jonathan Metliss, AAD chairman said, “We very much hope that this will be a precedent for future actions by the club against Chelsea supporters who make racist comments whether online or at the ground especially towards supporters of Tottenham Hotspur and that Chelsea’s action will act as a strong deterrent in the future.” He added, “AAD again condemns this deplorable behaviour and reinforces our campaign to eradicate anti-Semitism in football, whether at the ground, in grassroots football or on social media. “Racist abuse is becoming more and more prevalent on social media and these
anti-Semitic comments, which are part of this abhorrent situation, merely emphasise that the AAD campaign to eradicate anti-Semitism in football is proper, just and appropriate. This latest incident merely strengthens our resolve and determination to see an end to this behaviour once and for all.” Metliss continued, “As we have said previously and consistently, clubs, football authorities, police and social media platforms have to do much more to prevent and eradicate this behaviour and Chelsea’s punitive
action is to be commended.” In a statement, Chelsea said, “Following the conclusion of court proceedings in February, the club conducted our own investigation into the matter and has taken the decision to ban the individual from Chelsea FC for a period of ten years. Everybody at Chelsea is proud to be part of a diverse club. Our players, staff, fans and visitors to the club come from a wide range of backgrounds, including the Jewish community, and we want to ensure everyone feels safe, valued and included. We will not tolerate
any behaviour from supporters that threatens that aim.” The statement added, “As a club, we will continue to take action against individuals or groups who produce or disseminate social media posts that contravene these values.” Commenting on the judgement, Levene said, “I’m delighted with this outcome. It sends a very strong message that abusive and antisemitic behaviour online is unacceptable. And it’s particularly poignant coming today, when football clubs are walking out from social media because of racism online. I hope this case leads to better processes at Chelsea and other clubs so that it doesn’t take so long to come to the right decision in future, but this is a good day for the fight against racism in football.” Earlier this year, Mole admitted to police that he had sent abusive tweets in October 2019, but was found not guilty at Leicester Magistrates Court in February 2020 on a technicality as he was on holiday in Australia so outside the jurisdiction of UK’s courts. Mole, however, was issued with a threeyear restraining order prohibiting him from directly or indirectly contacting Levene and posting messages about him on social media. Mole was told that if he broke this order, he could go to prison. The court heard that Mole, a trainee teacher, expressed remorse for his actions. CAA is in contact with the Teaching Regulation Agency. Chelsea are among 19 Premiership clubs, along with the Premier League itself, to have adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism. CAA has long called for tougher regulations on social media sites and that social networks proactively search for and remove hate speech from their platforms.
Disabled IDF veterans demonstrate outside Knesset BY SIMCHA ABIR Hundreds of disabled IDF veterans demonstrated yesterday outside the Knesset and blocked major roads in Jerusalem due to the state’s inaction over rehabilitating care. The issue was highlighted by Itzik Saidyan who set himself alight two days before Israel’s Memorial Day at the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department in Petah Tikva due to his disability ranking. The 26-year-old, who served in the 2014 Gaza War and suffered from severe PTSD, had warned he would ham himself. Sheba Medical Center officials described Saidyan’s condition as very serious last week and his life was in “imminent danger”. Protesters called on the state to back the
‘One Soul’ plan currently on hold due to budgets. Finance Minister Israel Katz met with Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation yesterday in attempts to move the issue forward. Saidyan’s sister, Leah, Itzik, reportedly said that her brother felt “burned all over again” with the ‘One Soul’ issues. “I get inquiries from PTSD sufferers that include threats,” Leah told reporters, “They say they want to harm themselves. I’m scared to death. We try to stop them, to talk to them. Itzik’s protest was not about money nor for disability percentages, but receiving rehabilitation. We think it is right and proper that every fighter who was wounded or injured, physically or
mentally, will receive the best treatment.” “We will not stop protesting until the reform is fully implemented,” Idan Kliman, IDF Disabled Veterans Organisation head, reportedly told Channel 12. Reforming the Rehab Department has been ongoing with criticism from veteran groups over a complicated system establishing whether injuries were caused by or during military service. The process may take years resulting in an applicant not receiving necessary assistance. This is exasperating for veterans with PTSD. Itamar Graf, Rehabilitation Dept interim head, claims there are 10,700 requesting disabled status. “Despite the dedicated workers, the
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
service provided to disabled IDF veterans is not good,” Graf reportedly noted. “These are things we know we need to fix right away. We need to make substantial reforms here. The IDF is closely linked to bereaved families, widows and orphans. We must act with a similar attitude towards (the wounded)”. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz have disagreed over a NIS 350 million ($108 million) proposal. Netanyahu’s Office blames the Defense Ministry over funding the program in 2021 and 2022. The cabinet failed to meet last week and on Sunday due to the Mount Meron tragedy.

Manhunt continues for yeshiva student killer BY DAVID SAFFER Israel Defence Forces is continuing a manhunt for the killer of Yeshiva student Yehuda Guetta who died from injuries sustained in a drive-by terror attack at Tapuach Junction in the West Bank last Sunday. Guetta passed away at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva last night. Bania Peretz remains in serious condition. Amichai Hala was released from the hospital after treatment for light injuries. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent condolences within minutes of hearing of the tragic news. “These are difficult moments for the Guetta family and the entire nation of Israel shares in your sorrow,” he said. Troops surrounded a building in the West Bank village of Aqraba yesterday in the search for Muntasir Shalabi suspected of carrying out the terror attack against the three teen students.
Gunfire and explosions were heard in the operation but Shalabi was not inside. Shalabi’s wife was apprehended in a raid on the village of Turmusayya in the early hours of Wednesday. His 17-year old son was arrested in the village earlier this week. Shalabi returned to the Palestinian territories in 2020 having lived in the United States for a number of years according to media reports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to make a strong response in the immediate aftermath of the shocking attack. “Security forces are in pursuit of the terrorists and I am certain that they will apprehend them as soon as possible,” he said. “We will not allow terrorism to raise its head and we will strike our enemies with force.” Defense Minister Benny Gantz visited troops on Tuesday and confirmed the IDF remains on high alert after the attack.
He reportedly said, “Over the course of the past day, Israeli security forces, the IDF and Shin Bet have apprehended a number of suspects in the Tapuah Junction terrorist attack. We will catch the terrorists and settle the score with them.” IDF soldiers arrested a number of Palestinians from Aqraba this week. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack but Palestinian security forces discovered an abandoned car, set alight by the suspected militants. The IDF are unable to examine the burnt-out vehicle. In the incident at the weekend troops fired towards a vehicle, but the terrorists sped away. Security forces immediately launched a manhunt. Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi visited the site of the attack. “The IDF is doing everything necessary to protect our citizens and ensure stability during a volatile and challenging period,” he reportedly said. “We have reinforced troops in the area and will continue to operate to thwart terrorism.” In the aftermath of the attack, violence increased as Israeli settlers reportedly carried out revenge attacks against Palestinians. The IDF duly bolstered forces in the West Bank with tensions increased and will remain until Shalabi is apprehended. on Tuesday In related news, Israel Police have banned Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount to stop clashes between rightwing activists and Palestinians in the Old City. Depending on the situation, Jews will be allowed to enter the area on Jerusalem Day next week. According to eyewitness, a suspected vehicle stopped near a bus station and terrorists inside opened fire at the weekend. At the time of the shooting, six people were at the scene. The terrorists fled
6 MAY 2021 toward Ramallah. Magen David Adom teams initially took the wounded teens to Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva. Hala reportedly told media outlets about the attack. “We were talking to some guys at the bus station and suddenly I heard a loud noise and gun shots,” he recalled. “We quickly lay down on the floor. I was with my back to the terrorists and only after I lay down did I realise they shot at us and fled towards Nablus.” Hala added that it was a “miracle” he was only lightly hurt. “Very quickly they started evacuating the wounded and then I saw that I was hurt by a bullet in the back,” he noted. “It was only when I was on the floor that I realised it was a terror attack. If I was standing a millimetre to the right or to the left, my situation would have been different.” IDF forces entered Silwad near Ramallah to set up checkpoints. Hamas issued a statement, describing the attack as “a natural response to Israeli crimes” and “ongoing Palestinian resistance” in the West Bank. Tensions in Jerusalem, especially the Old City, have escalated in recent weeks. Last month over 45 rockets were fired across the border. No serious injuries were reported but IDF officers presented various options to the Security Cabinet. Israel has consistently stated that Hamas is responsible for allowing Islamic Jihad to target southern Israel in cross-border violence. In response, Israel closed the fishing zone around the Gaza Strip until further notice. After attacks on Charedi Jews took place at Damascus Gate and elsewhere in the city, Rosh Yeshivas Mir HaGaon HaRav Eliezer Yehudah Finkel responded by warning students to be wary.
Israel joins international effort for India BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel has joined the international effort in response to India’s growing COVID-19 crisis. Emergency medical aid, including oxygen equipment was sent to India on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry confirmed. In a statement on Monday, the ministry said a series of flights this week would carry aid that included thousands of group and individual oxygen generators, respirators, medications and medical equipment. “The extension of emergency assistance is an expression of the deep friendship between our countries in India’s time of need,” Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi reportedly said. Around the world there has been 3.2 million deaths and over 155 million coronavirus cases. A second wave in India has resulted in over 226,000 fatalities since the onset of the pandemic. India’s population of 1.4 billion people has experienced a huge spike in cases and
is the fastest growing in the world with 20.7 million cases an increase of 105,000 cases in the latest figures. India’s total of around 18 million is surpassed by the United States, 33.2 million (592,000 deaths). Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for an international effort last week in which Israel would be a full partner to help stop the tragedy. Coronavirus czar Prof. Nachman Ash backed the decision along with former czar Prof. Ronni Gamzu who requested support from the Health and Foreign Ministries. Dr Assaf Peretz who has run Samson Assuta University Hospital’s coronavirus ward in Ashdod will lead the delegation on a 14day mission to the African nation. “Israel has a moral and ethical duty to act wherever it can to share its knowledge and experience in dealing with the virus,” he reportedly said. “Taking part in such a delegation is a great privilege and enormous source of pride for Israel.” It has also been reported that Israel will
send a medical aid team to Ethiopia in the fight against deadly virus next month. In related news, Israel’s coronavirus committee has approved Ministry of Health’s regulations for additional relaxation measures. Gathering restrictions have been increased to 50 people indoors and 500 people outdoors. Gyms, sports facilities, swimming pools and indoor attractions have been cleared for operating subject to ‘Purple Badge’ requirements. All restrictions, including gathering restrictions, are lifted for establishments that opted to operate subject to the ‘Green Pass’ requirements. The committee stressed that only ‘Green Pass’ holders may enter these establishments. Occupancy restrictions for all establishments that opted to operate subject to the ‘Purple’ Badge have been unified at a ratio of one person per every seven square meters. Events, including shows aimed at children, may be held according to a seating

capacity, outdoors only, up to 500 people. A ‘Green Pass’ is not required. These regulations take effect today until Wednesday 19th May for evaluation. Meanwhile, two cases of the Brazilian variant have been detected in Israel among returning international passengers and a first case of the Chilean variant. The cases were detected by the national genomic sequencing array. Nineteen additional cases of the Indian variant were also detected among foreign nationals. Sixty cases have been detected in total. There is no information about effects on vaccinated and recovered individuals. The Ministry of Health is collating up-todate statistics and has reminded the public of its recommendation for vaccinated and recovered individuals to avoid unnecessary international travel. Anyone who returns from abroad whether not vaccinated or recovered must enter isolation. Regarding tier two destinations with severe infection rates, vaccinated and recovered individuals must also isolate.

Neo-Nazi dies in Kansas prison BY SIMCHA ABIR A neo-Nazi who murdered three people outside a Jewish community centre in Kansas City in 2014 has died in prison. Frazier Glenn Miller Jr, 80, testified during cross examination that he wanted to kill Jewish people before he died. During his trial Miller reiterated tropes that Jewish people were running the government, media and the Federal Reserve. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection, his execution was pending appeal. Miller raised his arm in the Nazi salute when convicted. Miller’s lawyers attempted to get his death sentence overturned at Kansas Supreme Court last March on grounds that he should not have represented himself in a death pen- Frazier Glenn Miller Jr alty case. They noted, “He stole so much from our family, but he didn’t steal our hearts or our dignity. He did not steal our memories, the love that sustains us or the ability to offer forgiveness and kindness in the face of such tragedy.” The Corporon family, who added that Miller was “rotten to his core”, never asked for his family’s forgiveness. They created the Faith Always Wins Foundation to promote forgiveness, rather than retribution. The statement concluded “We don’t carry the weight of hate in our hearts.” Miller, also known as Frazier Glenn Cross, dedicated his life to white supremacy. He founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina and later the White Patriot Party in the 1980s. His groups threatened Jews and Blacks and spread hate propaganda.
The FBI obtained a warrant and arrested Miller in 1987 after discovering weapons, pipe bombs and explosives. Prosecutors offered Miller a deal to reduce his time in prison if he testified against other white supremacist leaders in what turned into a disastrous Fort Smith sedition trial in 1988, where an all-white jury acquitted the accused despite Miller’s testimony. Miller later testified that he had reformed and become a born-again Christian. But in the 2000s, he was active in white supremacy circles, concentrating on antisemitism, posting thousands hate messages. Miller ran for the US House of Representatives in 2006 and the US Senate in 2010 in Missouri on a white power campaign. Johnson County District lawyer, Steve Howe, who prosecuted his 2014 case, said in a statement that Miller’s death did not repair the damage he did to victims’ families but hoped it would be a step in the healing process. LaManno’s family settled a lawsuit with Walmart over the sale of Miller’s shotgun in the Kansas shooting as he was not legally allowed to buy a gun due to the FBI warrant. The lawsuit alleged someone else bought the weapon at the Walmart store in Republic, Missouri.
Controversial mayoral candidate Rose asked to quit BY ADAM MOSES Divisive London mayoral candidate Brian Rose was asked to step down after a video interview promoting antisemitic conspiracy theorist David Icke hosted on his website resurfaced. The 2020 video podcast featured Icke who explained to Rose how Israel was using the COVID-19 pandemic to “test its technology”. Campaign Against Antisemitism highlighted that Icke also detailed antisemitic tropes about Rothschilds and 9/11 conspiracies against Israel. Icke, CAA added, further suggested that there was a hidden hand of “ultra-Zionist extremists” who run the world through shadowy organisations. Rose failed to challenge Icke on his points during the interview. Liberal Democrats mayoral candidate Luisa Porritt was scathing about the American-born hopeful. “No candidate seeking to represent our diverse and liberal city should be giving a platform to sickening, antisemitic conspiracy theories about the tragedy of 9/11,” she noted. Porritt added that Rose was not only “weird but dangerous” and should withdraw immediately. When questioned on hosting Icke, Rose did not believe he acted inappropriately.
CAA however are concerned Rose saw fit to interview hate preacher Icke and not challenge him on antisemitic tropes “London Live was censured by Ofcom for airing the interview, but the fact that it remains on Mr Rose’s website appears to show that, in Mr Rose’s judgement, Mr Icke’s views should be promoted,” CAA commented. Jewish Leadership Council and London Jewish Forum issued a joint statement noting that conspiracies in the video were antisemitic. They stated, “It is deeply worrying that a candidate for Mayor of London did not challenge Mr Icke’s anti-Jewish racism. We have faith that London voters will reject such views.” Brian Rose CAA added that Icke uses social media whilst his books and stage performances incite hatred. They wrote, “His preaching is so absurd that since the 1990s he has been dismissed as a crank, but because he is dismissed, there has been no major opposition to him and he has built up a following of thousands upon thousands of disciples whom he has persuaded to adamantly believe that the world is in the grip of a conspiracy run by the “Rothschild Zionists.”
David Icke
CAA added, “His repertoire includes conspiracy myths and tropes classified as antisemitic according to the International Definition of Antisemitism adopted by the British government.” Rose’ mayoral aspirations are expected to end as polls suggest the former New York City banker, originally from San Diego prior to moving to the UK in 2002 and subsequently becoming a citizen, has no chance of winning.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
A YouGov poll last Friday of the main contenders has present mayor, Sadiq Khan, leading the way on 65%, well ahead of Conservative candidate Shaun Bailey on 33%. Rose trails in their wake on just 3%. It has been reported that Rose spent £1m on his independent London campaign. CAA successfully persuaded some venues to pull out of hosting his events. And after years of pressure by CAA, Icke was banned from most social media platforms in 2020. Worryingly though, Icke had over 380,000 followers on Twitter to spread his hate message.

Israeli shot dead after Baltimore simcha
Biden launches Jewish American Heritage month
BY SIMCHA ABIR
BY NATALIE ASH
Police have opened an investigation into the murder of an orthodox Israeli man who was visiting Baltimore for a relative’s wedding on Monday. Efraim Gordon, 31, was shot dead outside his aunt and uncle’s home by an unknown assailant after attending the Simcha. His family is raising funds to fly Gordon’s coffin back to Israel for burial. According to media reports, Gordon had returned to the house in the midst of a robbery. “We believe that an attempted robbery turned fatal,” Commissioner Michael Harrison of the Baltimore Police reportedly said. “He was a wonderful man who will be strongly missed,” a relative told local Fox45 reporters. Baltimore City Council member Isaac ‘Yitzy’ Schleifer told reports that constituents had sent him video footage of individuals in the neighbourhood. Authorities have not yet released footage. Schleifer and Maryland House of Delegates member Dalya Attar, in a joint statement called for the murderer to be apprehended and prosecuted. “Justice must be served,” they noted. “We must never wake up to anything like this again.” They added, “We are constantly on a unified front working to fight for the safety of
US President Joe Biden has launched the annual Jewish American Heritage month. Biden called on all Americans to learn more about the heritage and contributions of Jewish Americans and observe programs, activities and ceremonies this month. “The Jewish American experience is a story of faith, fortitude and progress,” he noted. “It is a quintessential American experience one that is connected to key tenets of American identity, including our Nation’s commitment to freedom of religion and conscience. “This month, we honour Jewish Americans, past and present, who have inextricably woven their experience and their accomplishments into the fabric of our national identity. Generations of Jewish people have come to this Nation fleeing oppression, discrimination, and persecution in search of a better life for themselves and their children. These Jewish Americans have created lives for themselves and their families and played indispensable roles in our Nation’s civic and community life, making invaluable contributions to our Nation through their leadership and achievements.” Biden noted two historic firsts, Kamala Harris as the first Vice President to take the oath of office alongside a Jewish spouse and Chuck Schumer, the first Majority Leader of

the US Senate and highest-ranking Jewish American elected official in the Nation’s history. Biden noted the scourge of anti-Semitism which had affected Jewish Americans but also celebrated the contributions that had led to a just and fair society. “During Jewish American Heritage month, we honour Jewish Americans, who, inspired by Jewish values and American ideals, have engaged in the ongoing work of forming a more perfect union,” he concluded. Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison noted, “Throughout our history, Jewish American civil rights leaders have worked across movements to make our nation more just, to empower the powerless, and to give a voice to the voiceless. “As we honour the achievements of Jewish Americans, we must also recognise and condemn the persecution the Jewish community has faced in recent years and the fact that anti-Semitism remains a reality in America. We must call out and uproot this prejudice with all of our might.” He added, “As we begin the long process of getting the country back on track, let us embrace the Jewish tradition of tikkun olam and repair our communities better and stronger than before.” President George W. Bush initially proclaimed the heritage month in 2006.

Coalition negotiations update
Lapid now gets 28 days… BY JAMES MARLOW As we go to press on Wednesday night, President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin gives the mandate to form a coalition government to Yair Lapid of the Yesh Atid party. This latest move in the unfolding dramatic weekly drama series of “Knesset-Gate”, comes after the Director-General of the President’s House, Harel Tubi, wrote to the heads of all parties represented in the Knesset, in accordance with paragraph 9 of Basic Law: The Government (2001). To save you the boring details in the letter, Binyamin Netanyahu’s mandate expired on Tuesday night and so the President by law, gets to decide who to hand the all-important coalition keys to next. Rivlin offered to meet with party representatives for a second time on Wednesday, to hear the leader’s latest views on the political stalemate. This time Gideon Sa’ar’s six-seat New Hope party, endorsed Lapid. This boosted his bloc of backers from 45 to 51. The parties include Yesh Atid (17), Blue and White (8), Labor (7), Yisrael Beytenu (7) and Meretz (6). In the previous round of consultations with Rivlin last month, Sa’ar’s party did not back anyone for premier. The so-called “bloc for change” together with the right-wing Yamina party with 7 seats are jumping for joy and energised with excitement. Israeli social media was awoken with “mazeltovs” and “finally a government” being posted. But this is definitely not a “done deal.” Significant hurdles remain, despite what the Israeli media is reporting, because much of the public does not understand the numbers. It’s important to remember that Benny Gantz as leader of the original Blue and White party, also received the mandate in 2019, twice. He too failed to reach 61.

ELECTION NEWS BRIEFS: • Rabbi Chaim Druckman, one of the leaders in the National Religious Camp, met with Religious Zionists party head, Betzalel Smotrich last Monday, after one of the spiritual leaders of Noam, a faction within the party, announced he would be in favour of a right wing bloc with support from the Arab Ra’am party. This would give the right wing bloc 63 seats. However Smotrich again ruled this out by saying, “It opposes a government supported by the Ra’am party which supports terror”.
• The (temporary) government approved in a telephone referendum the appointment of ministers to cabinet posts that have been vacant. Education Minister Yoav Gallant of the Likud will also serve as Minister of Higher Education. Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud) will take the additional post of Water Resources Portfolio. Blue and White MK’s Michal Biton will serve as Minister for Social Equality and Yehiel Tropper becomes Science and Technology Minister. Cabinet Minister Ofir Akunis voted against the appointment of
ministers from the Blue and White party. The Movement for Quality Government welcomed the cabinet appointments, which were made after they submitted a petition to the High Court. • Blue and White leader Benny Gantz again ruled out joining a government with PM Netanyahu, telling his party that he is fully committed to the “bloc for change” that seeks to remove the Likud leader from power. “My door is firmly shut to Netanyahu, locked” he said following reports that he was again engaged in negotiations with Netanyahu on forming a coalition.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
• Gideon Sa’ar told his New Hope faction, “There are those who say my refusal to join a Netanyahu government is because of personal reasons or because of ego, when really it is because of what the PM has done. “New Hope voters, voted for change and not continuing the rule of Netanyahu.” • In an unruly way of playing politics with the deaths of many at Meron on Lag B’Omer, Yesh Atid head Yair Lapid, blamed Netanyahu for the Meron disaster. Lapid also repeated his claim that nearly 6400 people have died from Covid in Israel, “because Netanyahu left Ben Gurion airport open.”

Every single Londoner has a choice today… OPINION PIECE BY SHAUN BAILEY The readers of The Jewish Weekly have an important choice today – deciding who leads the direction of our city for the next four years. Like Jewish Weekly readers, I love this city. But let’s be honest. Since 2016, we haven’t lived up to our potential. Knife crime has reached historic highs. Good homes are unaffordable. Our transport network is struggling to cope. And the cost of living keeps rising. These problems haven’t come out of nowhere. They come from five long years of Sadiq Khan. Just look at his record. Instead of cutting crime, Sadiq Khan cut £38 million from police budgets. Instead of creating a new generation of homeowners, Sadiq Khan created excuses for not building more affordable homes — despite being given nearly £5 billion by the government. Instead of lowering the cost of living, Sadiq Khan raised the Congestion Charge and increased council tax. As Mayor, I’ll recruit 8,000 more police and reopen the 38 police stations closed by
Sadiq Khan. That way, we can get criminals off our streets. But I’ll also hire 4,000 new youth workers and open 32 new youth centres. I was a youth worker for twenty years, so I know that young people often just need a bit of support to get out of crime and into work. I’ll fix our broken transport network by setting up a London Infrastructure Bank. This will bring public and private funds together and let us invest in long-term projects like Crossrail 2. I’ll also protect free travel for under-18s and over-60s by introducing commercial sponsorship to our tube network, just like Santander sponsor the bike-hire scheme. And I’ll lower the cost of living by reversing the Congestion Charge hike on day one, cutting council
tax, stopping the expansion of ULEZ, and scrapping plans for an Outer London Tax. From my conversations with many Jewish Londoners, I know there is deep concern about the detrimental impact the ULEZ expansion will have. It will effectively split the community into two, unfairly punishing businesses, worshippers travelling to synagogues, and relatives visiting each other. I also know that many Jewish Weekly readers are appalled, like I am, by the demonisation of Israel and targeting of Jewish students on our university campuses. As Mayor, I will continue to speak out against antisemitic activities like Israel Apartheid Week and it is my personal goal to make sure Jewish students feel safe. And
It’s been a pleasure getting to know the Jewish community over the years. As Mayor I will work closely with fantastic community organisations whose contribution is felt by so many Londoners.
I will cut GLA funding from any group with ties to the BDS campaign. I will also take real action to stop the annual hate-fest on our streets that is AlQuds Day. It simply isn’t acceptable. It’s been a pleasure getting to know the Jewish community over the years. As Mayor I will work closely with fantastic community organisations whose contribution is felt by so many Londoners. Every single Londoner has a choice today. After five years of record crime, unaffordable homes and a rising cost of living, we can vote to stay on that path. Or we can vote to give our city a fresh start. For any Londoners still undecided, I urge them to think about the kind of city they want to live in — and the kind of city they want to pass on to the next generation. Together, we can build a safer, fairer, more affordable London. But it’s now down to you and your vote. Shaun Bailey is a British politician who has been a member of the London Assembly since 2016. A member of the Conservative Party, he is the party’s candidate for the forthcoming 2021 London mayoral election.

It’s hard to find the words… OPINION PIECE BY JAMES J MARLOW As news began to filter through that a stampede occurred and there were dozens of injuries, none of us could ever have imagined what we were about to wake up to last Friday morning – Lag B’Omer – the worst civilian disaster in Israeli history. Victims ranged from as young as 9-years old, with most being teenagers and in their early twenties. Young rabbis and fathers crushed to death. At least two families lost multiple children and ten of the victims were foreign nationals including six Americans, two Canadians, one from Argentina and one from England. How could such a disaster occur at such a place, like the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai in Har Meron? Many of us have heard of miracle stories, when prayers are said in this place. Whether it be recovery from a serious illness or giving birth, getting married, or something else, such a tragedy on such a site, is hard to process and understand. Forty-five families have just got up from
Shiva, after their lives have been shattered forever. The lives of these families will have completely changed, as they will in the future, mark the yahrzeit of their loved one’s on Lag B’Omer. A mother who no longer has her husband by her side. A father giving a hesped at his son’s levayah. Of course, we heard the usual politics as some Knesset members blamed Likud MK’s and accused the Prime Minister. The police refused to accept blame, despite some eyewitnesses accusing them on the media, of not stepping up to do more to help. The religious community were also blamed for attending, even though they were given permission by the authorities, who should have made sure it was safe for them. Sadly, we have now reached the stage that if visitors would have been told it is not safe, there is so little trust today, some may have thought, there may be an underlining motive to prevent the annual Lag B’Omer event from taking place. For anyone who has ever been to Meron on Lag B’Omer, it is irrelevant how religious, traditional or secular people are. Everyone joins in the wonderful

atmosphere of song and prayer with great love, feeling and emotion. After such a tragedy, everyone helps, even though people are still in shock. Amid the deep sadness, the Druze town of Beit Jan, as well as the Arab villages of Tamra, Jish, Yarka and Peki’in set up stations, to offer food and drink to evacuees and responders from the site on Friday morning. Pictures showed that the food was provided in its original sealed packaging, so Jewish recipients experiencing this outpouring of kindness, would not have to worry about the food’s kosher status. That’s going the extra mile and something you won’t hear on the news networks around the world, constantly reporting on the divisions between Arabs and Jews. Avigdor Chayot who lost his son in the disaster, asked to meet the Druze police officer, Rami Alwan, who saved his other son Shmuel, from almost certain death. At the shiver, the father is told the officer has arrived and without hesitation, runs to hug him, with tears rolling down his face. The father said to Rami, “The holy one took my son, but you saved my other son. “I wanted to thank you from my heart.” In the panic, officer Rami Alwan saw Shmuel had fallen to the ground in the stampede. Somehow, the policeman managed to make his way into the narrow walkway and pulled the young boy out of the crowd. In a beautiful picture at the

shiver, Rami is then seen hugging Shmuel. We can be really good together in times of disaster and death, but we are not always that good, in times of living together. I refer also to the many Jewish communities across the country. We need to understand and appreciate each other, while we are alive. Of course there are differences, but the hatred that has been shown from some factions on all sides, is not the destiny of the Jewish people. The fire of Lag B’Omer was severely diminished last week, but when Rebbe Akiva lost his 24,000 students, he did not give up hope. When the last funeral was held, when the last shiver was over, Rebbe Akiva started again, by finding five new students. The Chida says that Lag B’Omer is a celebration of NEVER giving up hope or becoming despondent. It’s a day of resilience and a commitment to continue. To move forward with our magnificent heritage and our own mission in this world. Last week the bonfires of Lag B’Omer burnt out, but the Shabbat candles were soon lit, to keep the fire burning. Our role is to continue the legacy of Rebbe Akiva and move on from this tragedy with passion, enthusiasm and with fire. The Netzach Community Centre Fronted by Rabbi Stepsky, The Netzach Community Centre promises to be a fantastic opportunity for a cross-communal space, securing Edgware’s future as a vibrant place for all ages for many generations to come. The venue, built across three storeys, will provide facilities for social and educational programmes for adults and children alongside a high spec youth hub, lecture auditorium, synagogue and function hall. The fulfilment of this state of the art vision however, is dependent on financial support from the community and beyond. While the team behind the project have already secured two-thirds of the money required, the final set of funding is needed to get this phenomenal project off the ground and they’re now appealing to the community for help. On the 9th and 10th of May, over 36 hours, the team behind the Netzach Community Centre is running an ambitious double match funding campaign to raise
£600,000 to secure the renovations needed on their new Hale Lane home. With opportunities for dedications, this unique crowdfunding project offers a chance to remember a loved one or honour someone special in your life, leaving a lasting memory etched onto the heart of the Edgware Jewish community for years to come. “The pandemic has shown us the critical need for community life and all it has to offer. The Hub will feature couches, table tennis and other indoor games, as well as kitchen facilities for refreshments and an area for informal discussion groups, arts, crafts and other social activities. Ezra Youth Movement will be making use of the new hub but the Netzach Community Centre will be available to other youth organisations, too. The second partner in the project is Shema B’ni. A unique organisation within the UK, who provide follow-up, support and education for individuals and families raised in a secular background who are now dedicated to a spiritual and meaningful life connected to their rich Jewish heritage. The teshuva revolution has taken world Jewry by storm, seeing thousands of Jews around the globe return to their rich and wonderful heritage, and hundreds have gained from Shema B’ni’s innovative classes, seminars, social events and mentoring programmes.

Our connection to Israel OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN
The original draft of my piece this week was full of good news from Israel. Despite corona, the economy is set to become the 29th largest in the world. Trade with the UK is still on the up and up. Foreign direct investment has never been stronger. And then we woke up to the tragic news last Friday that 45 people had been trampled to their deaths in what was possibly an avoidable loss of life at Mount Meron in northern Israel. What struck me about my reaction, and that of many around me was the sense of connection with the loss. Those who went to Mount Meron are far removed from me in terms of religious observance and practices. Yet when it comes to death and mourning, we are the same. It is that proximity which underscores the link between a relatively secular Jew in the diaspora and the very orthodox some 2,000 miles away. It is that proximity which prompted the Zionist Federation to send condolences to the Israeli Ambassador last Friday morning and for my Shul in Manchester to do the same this week.
The sense of connection is not limited to this latest tragic incident. For most Jews it resonates with Israel on many other levels: holidays, families and the keen sense of history when we visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem. So, it is with some sense of personal pride that we reflect on Israel’s economic success. Shortly after the UK referendum on leaving the EU, I met with the Israeli deputy ambassador Ms Sharon Bar-li when she came to Manchester. Ms Bar-li saw a positive outcome for the recent decision, since it meant greater trade opportunities between the two countries. This has turned out to be case. The UK is one of Israel’s major trading partners with over 300 Israeli companies operating here employing thousands of people.
The annual trade between the two countries is estimated to exceed 7 billion US Dollars. The impact though is not only in terms of direct trade. The more Israel trades with the UK, the more it is seen as an ordinary overseas trading partner, no different to China or France. This exposure to UK citizens through economic links is very different

to the distorted optics shown in the media which are usually men in one uniform or another, military or religious. This increase in the economic presence can only help to shift the perception that Israel is less about oranges, war and black hats and more about technological and medical advances which have been making an impact on the world stage for some time. And here we are again with the black hats, because whatever the strides made by Israel economically, it is still a country of contrasts and contradictions. In other words, a country just like any other. But for us it’s personal. That is why the increase in trade is so important and why the shift in emphasis is paramount. And this is why, when we think of the loss of life last week, we think of those mourning their loss and wish that the memory of those taken prematurely may be a blessing to the bereaved. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.
From the editor’s desk MERON
It is with tremendous grief that I sit down to write this editorial. Grief at one of the worst Jewish tragedies in many years. Grief for the parents who have lost children, for the children who have lost their father, wives who have lost their husbands and siblings bereft of brothers. All world Jewry feels deep pain at the horrific events in Meron last week. The Manchester community is in particular shock at the news of the passing of Moshe Bergman, a local boy who was studying in Kollel in Yerushalaim. His young wife Shira to whom he was married for 18 months is now sitting shiva back in Manchester, and the family can be contacted via email - familybergmanshiva@ gmail.com. Moshe’s wife and sisters have written a heart-breaking tribute on page 4, and my father Rabbi Saunders has also written a personal account of his close connection with the Bergman family who live down the road from him. I myself went to the same primary school as Moshe and my sister was one of his teachers. I have personally been to Meron on Lag B’Omer on two previous occasions, and it was always a special time. The people there no doubt were immensely looking forward to praying at the resting place of one of the greatest Jews who ever existed, and for such a holy night to turn so tragic is heartbreaking. Watching the various videos of the
British Ambassador to Israel Mr Neil Wigan (left), paying a visit to family Bergman sitting shiva
panic that ensued and the medical teams running around in the aftermath was hugely shocking and deeply distressing. The photos and videos tugged at the heartstrings of anyone who saw it, and many of those who were there and physically witnessed it have said how they are traumatised. A tragic disaster like this naturally leads everyone towards two questions; how and why? The question of how will be dealt with by the authorities in Israel and if the police are responsible then they will be dealt with in due course. Many eyewitnesses have said the crushing started hours before and the police were warned
by many to open more gates but refused. If this is true it is terrible and many changes must be enforced from now on to save future lives. But the big question of why remains. I saw a podcast shiur by Rabbi Lazer Brody (Garden of Emunah) who mentioned an interesting point. Throughout all the countless thousands of missiles rained down on Israel from Gaza over recent years, less than 45 Jews have been killed. So clearly when 45 people’s lives are taken on one single night in what appears to be a preventable disaster, we must look up to heaven and realise that Hashem is
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
sending a direct message to us. We no longer have prophets to tell us G-d’s word but we must realise that the same G-d who protects millions of people from missiles wanted these holy souls back in heaven. As the Bergman family so tearfully write, they are not questioning Hashem, rather they are accepting His will. Yet we must take to heart the message that Hashem controls this world and we must repent and mend our ways. For a tragedy to happen at such a holy place on such an auspicious day when so many Jews gather together in unity to pray to our Creator, is perhaps a sign from Above that there isn’t enough real unity across our nation. If we can all take it upon ourselves to try and be a little bit kinder to more people in memory of the 45 holy Jews, who passed away on Lag B’Omer in Meron, then that will be the best way to honour their memory.

Thanks to over 11,000 donors, YHS raised over 1.9 Million, a phenomenal amount that will help them build up a brand new campus to help the next generation of schoolchildren. Thank you to each of you for your generosity and support.

One of the consequences of making the 2d overcall is that, if your side does not declare, the opposition needs to determine only three more cards to have a full count of the hand. When that is done, the opposition’s declarer can make a play that would be extraordinary without the two-suited overcall. West led the king of hearts, taken by declarer in dummy with the ace. After ruffing a heart at trick two, declarer continued with a low trump to dummy’s nine to ruff dummy’s last heart with his ace. Next declarer played a low trump to dummy’s ten. When West discarded a spade, declarer judged that West’s most likely original distribution was 5:5:1:2. This prompted him to make the unusual play of the king of clubs followed by a low club to East’s seven, his eight and West’s nine. This left West on play with only major suit cards remaining. If he played a heart, declarer would be given a ruff and discard or a spade would allow the queen to score. So, hoping for the best, West exited with a low spade. Dummy played low and declarer took East’s ten with the queen. After drawing East’s last trump, declarer had the rest; he made two spades, a heart, two heart ruffs in hand, four trumps in dummy and three clubs. As West began with c9 andc3, it would have done East no good to play the ten or jack on the second round of clubs. Then, declarer would win the queen of clubs and later finesse East’s remaining club honour. He would make a spade, a heart, two heart ruffs, four trumps and four clubs. Notice that as West promised at least 5-5 in the majors and had shown up with a singleton trump, this approach would succeed whenever West had a singleton or doubleton nine, ten or jack in clubs.

Talking to your teen about tragedy Over 450 parents from across England participated in Jteen’s second Parent Event on Sunday evening with renowned international speaker, Rabbi Paysach Krohn. The theme of the evening was, “Navigating Teen Challenges”. Jteen launched around 3 months ago to support the emotional well-being of Jewish teens by enabling them to reach out when confronted by mental health challenges. Jteen’s flagship service is, “Jteen Support”, an anonymous textline, for teens who are facing any type of mental health challenges to reach out and benefit from the support of Jteen’s trained counsellors and qualified therapists. Jteen regularly helps kids suffering from anxiety, bullying, low self esteem, feeling low, and many other issues. It is endorsed and guided by leading North West London Rabbonim, educators and nationally acclaimed mental health experts. The Zoom event was introduced by trustee, Avi Barr, who dedicated the programme to the victims of the tragedy of Meron, and their families. “Hashem should give us all comfort at this difficult time.” “But,” he added, “where there is life there is hope – that is what Jteen support is all about,” giving hope and encouragement to teenagers needing help. Thousands give Kisharon ability to deliver vital services Over 5,500 donors ensured Kisharon has the ability to continue delivering vital front line services. The flagship campaign raised over £1.6m in 36 hours. Every donation was doubled by matchers. Donations go towards £2.1m funding required to support people with complex needs in the community during the coming year. With conventional fundraising impossible due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, funds raised ensure Kisharon can look forward to eventual emergence from the pandemic. The restrictive approach to social care funding maintained in the Chancellors recent budget, means pressure on front line services had been acute. Chief Executive, Richard Franklin,
commented, “This past year I have been astounded with people’s ingenuity, flexibility, creativity and determination. Nowhere more has this now proven to be the case than by our supporters’ ability to fundraise. Donors believed in those we support and their abilities.” The 36-hour campaign focused on ability and was demonstrated in TikTok style films showing how Kisharon offers people impacted with learning disabilities the ability to do what they do best. Every donation makes a big difference at Kisharon. Chairman Philip Goldberg thanked donors in a video message. “No words can really express our appreciation just to know that you have made the difference to making our organisation viable for the next year,” he said. AJEX remembers the 43 Group BY DAVID SAFFER AJEX JMA marked the 75th anniversary of the 43 Group as part of a series of online historical talks to watch at home. Education Manager, Paula Kitching, spoke of the brave actions of the men and women who formed the 43 Group in 1946. Despite the defeat of Nazism in Central Europe by the Allied nations in 1945, anti-Semitism once more tried to rear its head. In Britain, men and women of the Jewish community who had fought the Nazis, were not prepared to see messages of hate appear on their street corners. They formed the 43 Group and took the fight to the Fascists. Paula told delegates, “The story of the 43 Group in the immediate post war era is one people don’t know about. Antisemitism in UK has a long history. It was normalised in the 19th century and with increased migration by the start of 20th century there was a rise along with fascistic ideas and fascism in central and southern Europe.” Noting that the Jewish community of UK was committed to support the British state and empire at the onset of World War One, Paula added, “The Jewish community had changed, it was more anglicised by name, attitude and entwined in communities.” A British Jewry book of honour records those that served in The Great War. Despite dedicated service during the war there were critics stating Jews had shirked responsibilities. But there was support from high ranking officers and a future Prime Minister. Paula recalled, “Politicians and generals, including Churchill, put on record that the British Jewish contribution was important.” The late 1920s and early 1930s saw Britain and the rest of Europe seized with attitudes of fascism in Italy and Germany, especially through infamous politician Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists. AJEX in its foundation charter was combating antisemitism. In October 1936, there saw the Battle of Cable Street in East London with violent protests against fascism. World War Two saw a huge Jewish
contribution from the UK and internationally across the allied forces in fighting Nazism. But after the horror then liberation of concentration camps there was a reemergence of fascism through a number of organisations who changed names such as the British People’s Party and British Action Party with the same leaders, speakers and literature. Paula recalled, “The Jewish community had tried to play within the rules, one that was loyal to the UK, but just as World War One changed Anglo Jewry and the relationship to wider British society, World War Two had another effect.” Paula noted that because there was mass participation of British Jews within the armed forces they realised fascism was not going to be countered by polite discussion and letters to the Times. In April 1946, the 43 Group was created by ex-servicemen and women after they witnessed and broke up a fascist rally in north
London. Forty-three people spontaneously decided to hold a meeting at Maccabi House in Hampstead committed to take the fight to the fascists. “They were not going to play nicely within the rules,” commented Paula. “They would not stand by and listen to antisemitism being spread on the streets of their homes.” Key members included Maurice Beckman, Gerald Flamberg, Leonard Sherman and Alec Carson. They were not alone. They were going to take the fight back to the fascists. Membership grew to over 300. Future iconic hairstylist and philanthropist Vidal Sassoon was amongst the group. “Their purpose was to stop fascism in the UK and do what they felt the British government was not doing in the post-war period,” noted Paula. Specialist groups were formed. Infiltrators attended public meetings in areas of high Jewish presence where they heckled the speakers to ensure fascist messages did not get across. Non-Jewish ex-servicemen unhappy that fascism was back on streets assisted. At fascist meetings, 43 Group members joined in but found out where key talks would be. Paula recalled, “Book clubs were popular but were actually clandestine events for people to talk about their hatred of Jews. The 43 Group had a register of events and physically broke them up. Fascists stood up but were physically knocked back down.” She added, “It was not an easy battle as there were sections of Anglo-Jewry who didn’t want to fight on the street, they did not want a physical presence. They wanted to keep their heads down and hope it would go away. But the 43 Group felt that if you could fight and die for your country the least you could do is ask your country to stand up for you.” Paula continued, “We need to recognise what the 43 Group did. Through their commando unit, supporters managed to provide a different kind of Jewish political presence. They had a magazine, On Guard, they brought in support, funding, garnered
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
political support including from the Labour Party. Though the Labour government were unable to help, they had good political connections and made a presence, not just in fighting fascism, but also in popular press at the time.” The 43 Group was making an impact but there were accusations linked to the fight between Palestine and the establishment of State of Israel. “Things got ugly,” noted Paula. “Fascists painted the 43 Group as a branch of violence happening in the Middle East. They tried to accuse the group of being a terrorist organisation involved in guerilla warfare.” Eventually, AJEX and the 43 Group shared information, and by 1950, the group disbanded. “There was a clear relationship when you look at archival records,” noted Paula. “After working tirelessly weekends and evenings the general threat of fascism in UK had begun to recede. Racism, fascism and antisemitism had not disappeared but it could not hold the type of public events it did before.” She added, “The 43 Group had done its job by countering fascism physically but also by ensuring casual passersby did not want to have anything to do with it. Its impact enabled the 43 Group to step back but members continued to support AJEX and other organisations that stood up to fascism.” Some of 43 Group leaders stepped into senior leadership roles in AJEX and other community organisations. Paula concluded, “AJEX continues the 43 Group legacy into 2021 and we have not forgotten what those men and women did. It’s important to mark this anniversary to remember those members of our community who stood up for what they believed in, who took the fight to those who would threaten. And we take inspiration from that.” The series of talks continues this month with Battles in North Africa 1941, Operation Barbarossa and The Somme. Each talk will explore aspects of Jewish history through the prism of conflict, security and freedom.

Camp Simcha volunteers reunite with families
Volunteer Mira and CS child Suri
Camp Simcha volunteers have been reunited with the children they support - meeting in person for the first time in over six months. While the charity’s Family Liaison Officers began seeing mothers face-to-face outdoors in April once restrictions lifted, it has only been this past week that volunteers have
started to meet up with the seriously ill children and siblings they support. Camp Simcha Head of Services Daniel Gillis said this is happening on a case-bycase basis, taking into account each child’s circumstances and specific health risks. “So far it has been a handful of families, but more are planned and it has been
wonderful for all concerned. Our volunteers have done a fantastic job of engaging with the children they support virtually but that does not give the same level of respite to parents as a physical visit, especially with younger children. Volunteer Mira Josephs met up Sari, a teenage girl she supports whose sibling is ill – their first get-together since last summer. She said: “We have been doing activities on zoom but this was on another level and we were both so excited to see each other. We met up outside, walked, got some food and sat and ate it. Even though we were socially distancing, it just didn’t matter; it was so great to be together again and to see how happy she was. We have already been messaging about plans for next week’s activities!” As charities follow the Government’s roadmap to opening up, Mr Gillis explains that with the seriously ill children Camp Simcha supports being amongst the most vulnerable to Covid-19, their approach has to be right for the families. “Over the next few months, we are focusing on safe, outdoor meet-ups and activities in small groups with a view to some hybrid
virtual and physical events in the summer, restrictions permitting. “Our next big programme on the Camp Simcha calendar is our Keshet summer day scheme and the hope is that this will incorporate a few Covid-safe day trips for families and online evening activities.” Mr Gillis explained that while there was a definite desire to return to physical activities – with families missing being together in person – the remote provision that has been necessitated by Covid-19, has meant that those who have previously found it difficult to attend certain activities due to geography or other commitments, can now take part. “We have particularly noticed this with services like our therapeutic art sessions and some of our parent support activities and groups. “It’s one of the small positives to have come out of an incredibly challenging 13plus months. “As we carefully work towards a return to physical events, we will incorporate these positive aspects of our remote services into our provision for families going forward - to support everyone in a way that works best for them.”

Dance-a-thon supports children in need in UK and Israel
All marching to the beat of the drums
Five best friends have taken part in a dance-a-thon to raise for Jewish Child’s Day and Myisrael. The girls are celebrating their Bat Mitzvah and have attended the same dance class for many years. But due to COVID-19 restrictions they put their plans on hold until it was safe to get together. After many months of on-line rehearsals, their big day arrived with a non-stop three-hour dance-a-thon raising £4,450 to be split between the chosen charities. Sophie Martin, 12, said, “We all love to dance and are very lucky that we have had lessons since we were young. We wanted to give children less fortunate than ourselves the chance to enjoy dance as much as us.” Anthea Jackson, Jewish Child’s Day, commented, “The money they raised will support an organisation called Highlights. Many of the girls who participate in this project are from difficult backgrounds, low- income families, with some having physical or learning disabilities. Highlights is a wonderful opportunity for them to get together, make new friends and have fun learning new skills. The dancing lessons are a highlight of the week and a very important part of their social development.” Hayley Simon from Myisrael added, “The girls chose Misholim, an expressive arts therapy centre in Jerusalem. Children who struggle to communicate find an outlet for their deepest feelings. Using art, music, dance and drama, each child takes part in a tailor-made programme

Side by Side Marks Lag B’Omer Steve the Barman
Malki Foundation and Manna ‘Gin Cocktail Making Experience’ A sold-out evening saw over 75 participants from all over the UK, including Scotland and Ramsgate, take part in a virtual world class cocktail making experience for the Malki Foundation UK and Manna. Steve the Barman took participants on a historical journey of where gin originated and how it was used, and then demonstrated how to make several brilliant cocktails using the ingredients the charities had provided and delivered in packs prior to the evening. This collaboration between the Malki Foundation and Manna was a new one and both organisations worked hand in hand with all income being split. Thanks to an auction at the end of the evening offering the bottles of gin, over £3,500 was raised to go towards helping Side by Side pupils on Lag B’Omer
Side by Side Nursery and Special Needs School in Stamford Hill delivered an engaging and educational Lag B’Omer programme of activities for pupils. Following the Mount Meron tragedy, staff and pupils began the day by taking time to reflect and say Tehilim to all those injured. Honouring the festival’s traditions, pupils gathered round a bonfire to observe the Hadlaka ceremony. Having made crowns in classrooms earlier in the day, children participated in singing and dancing sessions. Picnics were also held around the
bonfire. A number of pupils assisted teachers with food preparation. As part of the learning programme, the Mechina Boys class developed adverts and posters for an onsite ice cream shop for pupils during the afternoon. Gerald Lebrett, Side by Side headteacher said, “It was a true privilege to see the joy and happiness these Lag B’Omer activities brought our pupils and staff. At the same time, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Mount Meron victims and wish all injured a Refuah Sheleima.”

From the front line…
Let’s get back to normal. Let’s at least try! BY JACQUELINE CURZON The composer Anthony Payne (84), known for his brilliant completion of Elgar's 3rd Symphony using only sketches, died on April 30th. He married the soprano Jane Manning in 1966 and she predeceased him on March 31st. This reminded me of some family friends; the wife Jane was a dressmaker, who amongst other design projects, had made my mother's wedding dress. Some years ago I found a newspaper clipping from the death notices, which said that Jane 'died on June 21st, survived by her adoring husband;’ the next insertion down on the page was that of her husband Dave, just 4 days later. It is quite well known that couples who spend their whole lives together - often without any children - leave a spouse totally heartbroken. This was the case for the husbands of both Janes. Broken Heart Syndrome is also known as stress cardiomyopathy, according to the Mayo Clinic in the USA. Care home residents are to be allowed out on trips, without having to self-isolate on their return. Campaign group Rights for Residents reported cases where some people hadn’t been allowed outdoors for more than 12 months, which is scandalous and inhumane. More of concern is that many residents are forgoing visits to their GPs, as this would require a 14 day self-isolation period. This must be remedied pronto, or the GP should instead make a home visit. Let’s face it, so few patients can access surgeries these days, that a risk of transmission must be negligible. School pupils are to be told to maintain their mask wearing until June, so says the teaching unions, even though no third wave has hit the country. The unions predicted a spike in cases when schools were reopened in March, but that was tactics and scaremongering. Vaccines have evidently proved their worth, and all should accept it when offered. SAGE has analysed recent data, and have found only 246 outbreaks linked to eating establishments countrywide. Three cheers for the coffee shops, pubs and restaurants who have provided refreshments in outdoor spaces, so that everyone who wants can escape their kitchens, and - of course - to prevent themselves from going bankrupt. Holidaymakers hoping to flee for the summer, might be given paper passports to prove their negative covid status, according to Downing Street. They have admitted that the NHS app, developed by NHSX, may not be ready in time. Now, where have we heard this before? At least 20 countries have indicated they will accept certificates rather than PCR tests, in a concerted effort to boost the economy. As most of Europe will however be in the amber category, you

will still have to extend your holiday with 10 days at home. Not sure an away-holiday is really that appealing. Our covid daily deaths reached a figure of 1 earlier this week, so you could justifiably argue your chance of dying from covid was now 1:67 million. And still we are instructed to proceed with caution, face masks at the ready {stand well back}, sanitisers firmly attached to your belt, like the virus slayers at the covid coral. Worldwide the cost of covid has been astronomical, with over 3 million deaths, and here at home - 127,500 deaths. The UK government has committed to sending 1,000 more ventilators to India, whose PM Narendra Modi is resisting a national lockdown despite over 20 million infections recorded. Counting the cost of home decor and renovations have proved an arithmetical nightmare for Boris, especially in the light of having refused his staff a pay rise. Now, no one grudges our PM some new curtains and a blast of feng shui for his flat, but decisions to pay Lulu Lyttle (top interior designer) £60,000 from the kitty of Conservative Campaign HQ is not an allocation of funds to fight the opposition, but instead merely created friction amongst his own party. This has resulted in three separate inquiries into his spending habits, including one requested by the Electoral Commission. He already told us there was no money in the public purse to prop up the wages of NHS workers, an announcement that went down like a lead balloon; and as announced this week, Scotland is likely to benefit from billions of state money. I ask outright how many heart and lung transplants could be facilitated, how many expensive cancer drugs could be bought, how many children could benefit from better paid staff, how much better could we make social provision for the most needy? Seems there’s money when the chap/ chav in a kilt knocks at the treasury door. Samantha Cameron has now inserted herself in the flat debacle, stating she will always defend the woman. Hmm, I’d like
to know how much she spent on the flat during her 6 years in occupation. Friends of Johnson have branded Carrie Symonds an ‘expensive accoutrement.’ Maybe that should read Expense Account? Unlike Mrs Cameron I don’t always follow the gender divide. There are women out there who feel they should enjoy a privileged lifestyle, especially if someone else is writing the cheques. But there are a greater number who grew up post war still in hardship, and understanding what ‘living within your means’ actually meant. Theresa May may not have been a trendy 30 something, but there was nothing fundamentally wrong in her choosing to have a home furnished by John Lewis, which is already outside the budgets of many. In Iran, an unnamed Swiss diplomat died after apparently falling from a building. This was the result of an accident according to the Iranian Labour News Agency, who reported she was the second in command at the embassy. It never fails to surprise me how many diplomats or high ranking officials seem to have fatal accidents overseas, and often involve falling off buildings without any witnesses. You may recall a few weeks ago I talked of those who applaud your success will just as quickly call for your beheading. Dominic Cumming is a case in point; once the favoured son, he is now doing his best to undermine Boris's role as PM. It matters not a jot if you’ve been good all year, for if you’ve slipped up somewhere, the banana skin will come back to get you. I’m sure Dom's little black [note]book is full of fascinating bedtime stories, and one must ask why he wasn't told to surrender these jottings on his departure from office, never mind the emails he’s allegedly holding onto. Is data security so lax in Downing Street, that everyone does as they please? Maybe Cummings might have some background info on the Iranian detention of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who looked set to be released last week. An agreement was evidently reached to pay an outstanding £400 million debt, but the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has poured cold water on this suggestion, claiming it was a ‘statement of misinformation’ by Iran. FO minister James Cleverly cleverly clarified that the talks over the debt are not linked to Nazanin. Putting aside the fact the UK acknowledges owing this considerable sum, the government obviously feels a need to fund instead Scotland, which has its foot firmly wedged in the exit door. It made the news recently that Prince Andrew had an unexpected home visit. No, not from Help the Aged, but a Spanish lady claiming to be Irene Windsor who turned up at the grounds of Royal Lodge, saying she was his fiancée, and that Andrew was
expecting her. The guards even paid her taxi fare. Unbelievably she was waved through. It was only when she was spotted wandering around, and after asking where to find the Prince, that she was challenged and later detained under the Mental Health Act. She should perhaps have been given a medal for showing up the deleterious lapse in security, for which ‘heads may roll.’ A further incident happened when a man and woman scaled the fencing and wandered into the grounds. Andrew is of course the second son of the Queen, and regardless of how naughty he may have been, he deserves a proper level of security. He made further news last week, for having set up a new business {Lincelles} with Harry Keogh, formerly a banker at Coutts, who resigned following allegations of harassment from female colleagues. He had originally sued Coutts for unfair dismissal, before signing a NDA [non disclosure agreement], which means he cannot comment on allegations. Lincelles was set up as a trust fund for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, but was structured as an unlimited company, which means it is not obliged to file accounts and can avoid disclosing income or profits. A later update stated that Prince Andrew had closed Lincelles, after being told that such financial structures were ‘not appropriate’ for a member of the royal family. One really must appreciate royal boundaries, fences included. Congratulations go to Fang Zheng, this year’s winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, who is only the second percussionist to win, and the first Chinese candidate. As a student of Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, 17 year old Zheng has spent the past year in China because of lockdown, attending lessons remotely. He attributes his interest and success in music to his parents' desire that he attend an after-school club: aged 7, he chose percussion. By age 10 he had won the Chinese Young Musician of the Year, and his father moved with him from their hometown of Pingdingshan to Shanghai to access high level coaching. Unbelievably his tutor Chen Shaolan had to work during the day, which meant Zheng had to sleep during those hours, and begin classes at 9pm, working until around 4am. Whilst these hours would be topsy turvy to musicians in the west, he appreciated the opportunity and proved his commitment. Zheng was put forward for an Andrew Lloyd Weber bursary, which allowed him to enrol at Chethams in September 2018. When asked about his future, he thinks he may return home, but says unassumingly, he is here ‘to represent and bring fame to China.’ Love Jacqueline x

Fruits of the Forest Meringue Roulade
A delicious recipe for Shavuot from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
This is a delicious ‘dairy’ dessert that makes an impressive alternative to cheesecake at Shavuot. It is also perfect pudding for gluten free guests or use potato flour and enjoy at Passover too. When the fruits are not in season, frozen, defrosted and drained work well or even use a mixture of both. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Serves: 10-12 Ingredients 4 large egg whites 225g caster sugar Pinch of salt ~ 1 ½ level tsp cornflour 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Filling Icing sugar, to dust 300g fat-free Greek yogurt/mascarpone cheese or non-dairy whipping cream – whisked until thick 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 250g blueberries/ black currants/ blackberries/ pitted cherries/ strawberries Icing sugar Garnish: A selection of berries and sprigs of mint Method 1. Preheat the oven to 150C/ gas 2/fan 130C. 2. Line a 38cm x 26cm swiss roll tin with non-stick baking parchment. 3. Beat the egg whites and pinch of salt with an electric whisk until frothy and doubled in bulk.
Dairy desserts explored BY DENISE PHILLIPS For many Shavuot is the not the same without a ‘cheesecake’ of some description but I wanted to explore the other options which you might like to enjoy this year for a change. Dairy ingredients come in all types and forms – cream, cheese in particular cream cheese with all the different fat contents and flavours - yoghurt, butter, milk chocolate, white chocolate and you can now see that there is definitely a ‘white theme’! White signifies cleanliness, softness, spirituality, beginnings, purity and light. The idea of using white reflects the symbolism of dairy connected to the festival. The word for milk in Hebrew is ‘halav’ which has a gematria of 40 corresponding to the number of days Moses spent up Mount Sinai. Others look to the mountain itself, which was termed in Psalms as Mount Gavnunim, meaning peaks which is similar to the word ‘Gevinah’, meaning cheese. Symbolizing modesty, dairy was also seen as appropriate for the occasion of receiving the Torah, which should always be approached with humility. Others say that Shavuot occurs during the
fertile spring period, when animal mothers produce lots of fresh milk. Whatever the reason, dairy foods are often consumed on Shavuot. I have a favourite lokshen pudding recipe filled with cream cheese, sour cream, soaked raisins in brandy and blueberries. This recipe uses the thick lokshen noodles and is flavoured with cinnamon. The noodles go crispy on the top and the filling has a delicious creamy texture. Cheese blintzes, kreplach and kugels are other classics at this time but why not try banoffee pie, rice pudding, white chocolate and blackberry pie, white chocolate blondies, meringues filled with Greek yogurt and fruit. Crème brulee with a mix of wild berries is always popular - you need to make the base in advance and the crunchy caramelized sugar topping needs to set before serving. Meringue roulade or white chocolate roulade filled with cream is light and delicious. Hope you have a tasty dairy and ‘cheesy’ time! Chag Sameach

4. Slowly whisk in the caster sugar until thick and shiny. 5. Mix the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract, then whisk into the egg whites. 6. Spoon into the tin and level the surface carefully, so you don’t push out the air. 7. Bake for 30 minutes until the meringue surface is just firm. 8. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for about 10 minutes. 9. Dust another sheet of baking parchment paper with icing sugar. 10. Turn the meringue out on to the sugar-coated paper. 11. Add the vanilla essence to the yoghurt. 12. Peel off the lining paper, then spread cream mixture over the meringue and scatter with your chosen fruits of the forest. 13. Use the paper to roll up the roulade starting with the longer side. 14. Keep the join underneath. Sift a little icing sugar on top if you like, decorate with extra fruits of the forest.

ASK THE RABBI
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com THE MERON TRAGEDY Dear Rabbi The Jewish world is reeling from what happened in Meron last weekend. Many readers of the Jewish Weekly enjoy your words and as often inspired by them. I have heard so many different themes shared, some positive others negative. Some citing words from the Zohar which supposedly predicted this happening. Can you please help make sense of it all. Simone Dear Simone I cannot make sense of it. At all. It’s a tragedy that defies comprehension. It was a day of joy, so instituted by Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai – and turned into a day of mourning, at his very gravesite. It is at moments like that when we can only but look on in disbelief and know “for My thoughts are not your thoughts.” But let me offer perspective. There were essentially three responses. Many Anti-Semites came out of the woodwork to use the opportunity to attack. They’re not worth the time or energy to respond to, other than to say, that their callous remarks in the face of tragedy, lays bare the truth that it’s not about their bleeding liberal hearts or their so-called compassion for what they perceive to be oppressed minorities, but simply hate, for hate’s sake. There were others who came out swinging – raging against the community in Israel for gathering in such large numbers; whether because of Covid or health and safety or whatever
else besides. To be sure, of course there will be a time for investigations and for questions that need to be answered. But there is a time and place and to criticise in the wrong time or place, while families are sitting in mourning, bereft from their loss, is simply insensitive. If, as in the words of the Mishna, “don’t attempt to offer comfort when one’s loved one lies before them,” how much more so, words of critique. It is not the Jewish way. Finally, for people to start citing Zohar or offering other explanations for why this happened, is, at best, gross naiveté. Apart from it being a complete misunderstanding and mistranslation of the Zohar, to attempt to play G-d and start offering explanations for anything that happens, is presumptuous arrogance. Sure, in the face of tragedy, we could and should all introspect. But if we are oblivious of the causes of incidents in our own day-to-day lives, how much less can we know about cosmic events, especially those affecting so many righteous people and the world at large? It is only a prophet speaking on behalf of G-d who can declare the reason for suffering. At every funeral, we declare that G-d is absolute justness and perfection. That’s from His perspective, as it were. But we mere mortals are commanded to grieve in the face of every calamity. It is never for any of us to speculate or offer a rationale for the terrible things that happen, rather to embrace the Talmudic dictum: “Teach yourself to say, I do not know,” and yearn for a

HAS G-D ABANDONED ME? Dear Rabbi I recently suffered severe disability following an unfortunate accident. I am in constant pain though I receive both physical and emotional therapy. Still, I can’t help feeling that G-d has abandoned me. Zoe
Dear Zoe I am sorry for you and I feel for you. The very fact that you are writing to me suggests that you are not comfortable with those negative thoughts and are looking to reconcile G-d with what happened to you. Let me begin by saying that under these difficult circumstances any answer, explanation, or insight is not meant to undermine the pain you feel, or to deprive you of your right to express that feeling. The Talmud makes a categorical statement: “G-d does not give one a challenge they cannot overcome.” What this suggests is that the bigger the challenge in life the greater the potential within the individual to deal with it. As you may be lacking in one area, reflected by your present disability, you possess an abundance of strength and capability in another. The challenge is to be able to look past your present disabilities and focus on your amazing abilities. G-d has not forsaken you.
ent is absent” (Isaiah 28:8). But, if three have eaten at one table, and have spoken there words of Torah, [it is] as if they had eaten at the table of the All-Present, blessed be He, as it is said, “And He said unto me, ‘this is the table before the Lord’” (Ezekiel 41:22). In this week’s Mishnah we are taught a pivotal lesson about the importance of our Shabbat table. Many people treat Shabbat meals like a good excuse to sample many culinary delights and share the week’s gossip with all the family. What a tragic waste of time and golden
Perek 3: Mishna 3
opportunity! According to the Mishnah it is like eating from a table full of filthy vomit! A Shabbat table should be the centrepiece of not just the physical dining room but also of the heart of the real home, the unshakable bond between man and wife, parent and child, and of course siblings. A table with the correct Torah attitude functions as an appropriate vehicle for world class chinuch allowing children to grow up with memories of Shabbat as being fun times with all the family, and full of spirituality too. Then the table can grace HaShem, amen.

If you are still living that means G-d has a purpose for you in this world, which no one else can fulfil. And if G-d has a purpose for you, He surely gives you the means with which to accomplish that task. Whilst your medical team are applying the necessary therapy there are some things you can do for yourself. Try spending half an hour each day, thinking about your abilities. Preferably in the morning, so the rest of your day appears much brighter. Try not to focus too much on your disabilities just think about things you can do, things you like to do, and things that will make an impact of some sort for yourself and maybe even for those around you. Remember, even the biggest mansion is started by the laying of a single brick. Also, never forget the power of prayer. Speak to G-d. Yell at Him if you must. Ask for His help and guidance, and ask Him to cure you. My blessing is that He responds and grants you a complete and speedy recovery.

better tomorrow.” My personal takeaway from this whole tragedy is that whenever there is a terrible tragedy in Israel or elsewhere, Jewish people band together is a most compelling demonstration of unity proving how we are essentially connected at the core. It’s not like we are Americans who are also Jewish, and Canadians who are also Jewish and British who are also Jewish. We are, first and foremost Jewish, and then, based on our geographical locations – we are either British Jews or American Jews or Canadian Jews. When something happens in any one place we feel it someplace else. Like a family member – however far away – if something happens to my brother or sister – on the other side of the world, it doesn’t lessen the impact – it doesn’t diminish the pain. I don’t believe there are a people so universally bound as the Jewish people. We need to ensure to nurture that truth, always. May the Almighty bring healing to those who are injured and comfort to those who mourn; and may we merit an end to all pain and suffering forevermore. Amen.

From Meron To Yerushalayim: Reconciling Tragedy with Celebration BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN It has been a week of tears and of numbness. Every time I read the list of 45 I become dizzy and faint, wincing in disbelief. Too many names to remember and too many tears to hold back. My eyes are fatigued from withholding tears and throat is soar from choaking the pain. Standing with thousands at the funeral of Danny Morris z”l, we all looked to Heaven for answers we knew would not come. Our people have been gashed with sorrow and our nation throbs with grief. At this point additional words are pointless. Life sometimes moves quickly, and this upcoming Yom Yerushalayim we will relive the great miracles of the six-day war and of our triumphant return to Yerushalayim. We will abruptly transition from suffering to national joy. These two experiences feel so antithetical but life is complex and often demands that we merge sadness and joy. Can we fuse these two adverse experiences? As the intense grieving for the Meron tragedy subsides, how can we merge this disaster with the celebration of Yom Yerushalayim?
HERE ARE THREE RECOMMENDATIONS:
1.Rendezvous with Holiness For a Jew, not all locations are created equal. The land of Israel possesses unique sanctity and, within Israel, Yerushalayim and the Mikdash are vested with even greater holiness. Our three Avot ascended this mountain and ever since, Jews have journeyed to these points of encounter with G-d. Our spiritual landscape isn’t a flat grid;there are spiritual highlands!!. Exile altered all that. We were dislocated from holy sites and, sadly, most of these locations were vacated of their formal holiness. For thousands of years, most Jews were severed from these summits of encountering G-d. For many, Torah study and prayer were sufficient. The Talmud (Tamid 32) announces that G-d’s presence visits anyone studying Torah. Similarly, the Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 26) equates prayer on Rosh Hahsanah to entering the inner sanctum of the Mikdash. Torah study and prayer thrust us into a different realm- a location-independent zone standing in the presence of G-d. For some however, these spiritual “mindspaces” are not sufficient. Many continue to yearn to stand in “actual” land spaces which could serve as bridges to a higher spiritual realm of connectedness. Grave-sites of tzadikim and the righteous provide these platforms. Platforms for prayer, spirituality, hope and connection. Full disclaimer: I don’t visit Rebbi Shimon’s grave on Lag Ba’omer. In general, visiting graves isn’t part of my tradition. I visit graves of close relatives or personal Rabonim and I time my visit to the guidelines of Shulchan
We all hope to continue mass Jewish gatherings under safer conditions and, one day, we will gather, at the end of time, along with all of humanity to celebrate the conclusion of history. that Rachel may not even be buried there, perhaps diminishing the value of prayers at this site. Rav Amital responded that even if Rachel isn’t buried at this site, the tears shed by Jews throughout history have invested this tomb with historical sanctity. I believe the same about Meron. Many connect with the kabbalistic lore of this mountain. Even for those who don’t actively live Kabbalah, Jewish tears throughout the centuries have consecrated this mountain. Sadly, there is a new river of tears streaming through this mountain. That river has 45 streams.
Oruch – around Yomim Noraim. When I do visit, I visit alone so that my experience is private and, for me, more profound. Despite this, I encourage and support those who are drawn to Meron and to the spiritual connection which it bridges. What does the experience of visiting graves share in common with 1967? When the state was founded in 1948 we witnessed miracles and tasted national triumph. However, lost amidst the euphoria, was the sorrow of being expelled from our historical holy sites. During the Holocaust it appeared as if G-d had turned His attention away from Jews in Europe; just a few years later Jews in Israel were expelled from His private quarters. We could no longer access the Kotel, the grave of Rachel or Me’arat Hamachpeilah. It is difficult, in historical hindsight, to fully appreciate the frustration of being evicted for those 19 intervening years. In 1967 we returned to these holy wards. We were invited back to the land of Tanach, back to the graves of our ancestors and back to the wall of history. Inviting us back to His home, G-d also invited us back into history and back into redemption. The 1967 invitation convinced us that we were returning to an earlier period in our history when we actively stood before G-d in holy sites. The Meron pilgrims were expressing a longing we all feel - to climb the mountain and encounter G-d. Tragically so many lost their lives fulfilling this common longing. My Rebbe, HaRav Yehuda Amital was once questioned about the historical accuracy of Kever Rachel. Evidence has emerged
2.Thronging The day on which Torah was delivered is nicknamed as the day of “gathering” since millions amassed beneath the mountain and spoke directly with G-d. The Sinai gatherings were re-dramatized every seven years during the Hakhel ceremony. Likewise, throngs of Jewish pilgrims flocked to Yerushalayim during each chag. Our tragic exile dispersed Jews around the globe and suspended these gatherings. The Talmud (Berachot 58) mandates that a blessing be recited when witnessing a Sinai-sized crowd of 600,00 Jews. For two thousand years Jews must have chuckled at this prospect- never imaging gatherings which could approach that size. Finally, back in our homeland, our generation has, once again, experienced mass gatherings. The experience of thronging together with large crowds of Jews has returned to our lives. Sometimes we gather to mourn, other times to celebrate. One day soon, we will assemble upon Yerushalayim to jointly celebrate three national holidays. Throngs of Jews in Israel is one step toward Messianic redemption. One of the first mass gatherings in the modern state occurred a week after the victory in 1967. For a week, teams worked feverishly to remove the rubble and pave the plaza-entrance to the Kotel. Finally, on Shavuot, Jews were invited back and over 200,000 streamed to the wall of Jewish dreams which had been off-limits for 19 dark years. This may have been the largest mass crowd of Jews in thousands of years! The pilgrimage to Meron is part of this historical revival. Masses of Jews standing shoulder to shoulder searching for
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
connection and spirituality was unimaginable outside our homeland. Sadly, the existing infrastructure in Meron wasn’t able to support this crowd and horror ensued. We all hope to continue mass Jewish gatherings under safer conditions and, one day, we will gather, at the end of time, along with all of humanity to celebrate the conclusion of history. It is so sad that those who gathered at Meron had their lives cut so short. 3. A City of Unity The Talmud (Yerushalmi, Chagiga 3) famously portrays Yerushalayim as a “unifying city. The city was never allocated to a particular tribe and, as a public commons, was an instrument of national unity. Throughout our diaspora, Yerushalayim united Jews across the globe who all prayed in a common direction. Our return to Yerushalayim in 1967 was a signature moment of national unity. Secular and religious each sensed the “moment” of Jewish triumph and of national destiny. The national solidarity was unlike any unity which had been experienced until that point. Sadly, that unity has long since frayed. Israeli society and the broader Jewish world are both badly splintered along many “lines of division”. Sadly, we haven’t even preserved the unifying potential of the Kotel as we haven’t been able to fully include all who are drawn by this historical magnet. What type of event will it take to unify our people? In theory, the devastating viral pandemic should have unified us but, instead, it fractured us. Sadly, a disaster of the magnitude of Meron seems to be the only event we can experience ‘jointly’. If we can’t cry together over the loss of innocent life, we share little in common. Don’t ruin this unity. In the upcoming days and weeks our mourning will abate and we will begin to unpack the causes of this tragedy. Understandably, we will analyze logistics, event-management, ideology, culture and their respective roles in this unspeakable tragedy. This conversation is not only legitimate but extremely necessary on many levels. However, the conversation must be kept respectful, sensitive and constructive. Lives have been shattered and our conversation will be conducted in the shadow of death and tears. Positions should be asserted with intellectual humility and sincerity. If we convert the tragedy into a launching pad for scorn, rivalry and derision, we dishonor the memory of those who perished and we travel further away from the day we returned to Yerushalayim. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Behar Bechukotai
“The land shall not be sold in perpetuity…” (Vayikra 25:23)
Sidra Summary G-d will also allow the nation to stay in the Land and not be exiled.
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 25:29-38
In certain walled cities, a seller has the right to re-purchase a house in the first year after its sale. This does not apply in non-walled cities. There are 48 Levite cities in Israel; the laws pertaining to its fields and houses differ from other cities. One is forbidden to lend money with interest.
1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 25:1-18
G-d instructs Moshe to tell the nation about the mitzvot of Shemitah. Every seventh year, the Land is ‘rested’ and no agricultural work is permitted. In addition, after seven cycles of seven years, the 50th year is designated as the Yovel (Jubilee) year. As well as the Land again being left fallow, servants go free and certain types of ancestral properties return to their original owners.
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 25:19-28
G-d promises that people will not go hungry if they observe Shemitah – He will provide sufficient produce in the sixth year. As a reward for keeping Shemitah,
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 25:39-26:9
After someone becomes a servant in an attempt to escape from his poverty, his owner is not allowed to burden him with unnecessary or overly taxing work. His relatives have a duty to try to release him from his servitude by buying out the rest of his contract from his owner. We are reminded to avoid idol worship, keep Shabbat and revere the Temple. Point to Consider: What is the connection between Shemitah and the subsequent passages? (see Rashi to 26:1) Parashat Bechukotai opens with the promise that if we keep G-d’s laws, the Land will give plenty of produce and we
will not suffer any physical threat from enemies.
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 26:10-46
This aliyah opens with further blessings if we follow G-d’s will – a huge abundance of crops and a tangible sense of G-d’s presence amongst us. However, it then continues with the tochacha, the passage of retribution. If we do not listen to G-d’s commandments and do not observe the mitzvot, the consequences will be grave. Five series of punishments are listed. These include: being captured by enemies, the Land being unproductive, livestock being destroyed, famine, hunger and being chased from the Land but finding no comfort on foreign soils. Eventually however, G-d will remember His covenant with the forefathers and will never fully reject Israel.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 27:1-15
One is able to make a vow pledging to give one’s monetary value or the monetary value of someone else, to the Temple. These gifts are referred to as erechin
(‘valuations’). The amount is based on a list of fixed values depending on age and gender. After designating an animal to be brought as an offering, one is not allowed to try to switch its status to another animal.
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 27:16-34
The Torah details how to ‘redeem’ a house or field, as first discussed in the 3rd and 4th aliyot. A firstborn animal is dedicated from birth to be a Temple offering. Certain types of agricultural tithes can be redeemed if an additional fifth of the original value is added. This is the closing part of the book of Vayikra. We stand for the final verse and after it recite: “chazak, chazak ve’nitchazek”, a phrase asking for continued strength for our study of the Torah.
HAFTARAH
The prophet Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) admonishes the people for worshipping idols, forecasts the downfall of those who turn their hearts away from G-d and encourages those who trust in Him.
Chovat Halevavot Hilchot Shabbat A certain pious individual pointed out, writes the author, that he is surprised at how people give their friends what is anyway destined to be given to them and then demand credit from their friend – “See the favour I did for you!!”. This is wrong. Furthermore, certain people receive their income from a heaven-sent messenger (read: your employer) and then talk to them as if they were the true source of all blessing, with (overdone) humility and (excessive) praise. How about taking a moment during the “Modim” prayer to thank the true Source of our income instead? (Obviously, gratitude is always appropriate, but a certain perspective must be maintained that it is G-d who provides for us.) If, temporarily a person does not receive income, they can consider that maybe the money stored in the bank account is what G-d had in Mind for his livelihood for today or perhaps instead of customers coming into his shop, some other form of
livelihood may come his way. Whether or not a person has a steady and predictable income, they should, as stated earlier, find the type of career that suits them, be it a fishmonger, a dentist or a builder, but then concurrently believe that Hashem has given them the skills, the opportunities and wherewithal to succeed. Likewise in matters of health, a person should maintain a healthy lifestyle (according to what the world considers healthy) and try to stay away from non-healthy habits, and at the same time understand that their health is in G-d’s hands. Once a person has faith in Hashem even when faced with illness (may G-d protect us all), then Hashem often will bring about a cure – whether in a conventional manner or otherwise. It is even possible that Hashem will bring about the cure for one malady in a manner which at other times causes other forms of damage.
We shall now learn the laws of the category of Muktzah called, Muktzah Machmat Chisaron Kis (“MMCK”). Certain items of value are rarely touched and hardly ever moved save for the specific use they are designed for – generally, a use forbidden on Shabbat. Such items are given more stringent laws of Muktzah. Historic examples of this are a Shechita knife, a butcher’s knife and expensive candlesticks. More modern examples include a laptop, desktop PC, CD Player, and the entire Apple “i” series (quite a long list) along with other makes of music players, video players, communication devices and much more. These items at first glance may have been thought to be “Keli Shemelachto L’Issur (an item whose primary function is forbidden on Shabbat); however, due to their high value, they are given more stringent laws. Therefore, even for use of space or unusual permitted use, the above items may not be used on Shabbat. So, unlike a biro pen or a hammer which can be moved if they are either; A) taking up space needed on a table or a bed or; B) if it (the pen) is needed to stir a drink of tea, a camera or a Mobile Phone cannot
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
be moved even for those purposes. Similarly, Cheques, Notes, Credit Cards, stamps or valuable papers which a person would be careful to not use for any purpose other than a prohibited one on Shabbat, are all included in the severe category, “MMCK”. However, not only are the above items included in the category, but even general expensive items, which a person designates a place for, such as valuable paintings, wall clocks or even a heavy bookshelf, are included in the MMCK category. Pesach crockery during the year which is set aside for Pesach, or hand Matzot on Erev Pesach which is Shabbat, are also Muktzah due to their expensive worth. Items of sentimental value alone (without marketable high value such as your great grandfather’s tie) are not included in this category.

A Torah bite for the Shabbat table
The meaning of Shabbos RABBI GOODMAN Ironically, Shabbos is one of the most important Mitzvos of being a Jew, yet our understanding of its significance is wishy-washy. We work with what we were taught from a young age: that Hashem created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day; therefore, we too rest on the seventh day, to testify that Hashem created the world. In a similar vein, the Mitzvah of Shmitah, to abstain from cultivating one’s land every seventh year of the agricultural cycle, and one of the central Mitzvos of Parshas Behar, follows the same pattern as Shabbos. The Torah mandates a seven-year agricultural cycle, reserving the seventh year as a year of rest, as testimony that Hashem created the world. The puzzling detail of this arrangement is why the Torah specifically chose the day that Hashem “rested” from creating the world as the day to commemorate its creation. Surely, the day on which creation began would have been a more appropriate time to celebrate the world’s inception. An accomplished
businessman remembers the day he launched his business, rather than the day he retired. The Bais HaLevi, Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik (1820-1892), in his commentary to Parshas Bereishis, explains in classic Brisker style, that the seventh day of creation was not an ‘off day’ for Hashem, rather it too was a day of creation. However, it was a type of creation different from that of the first six days. The Bais HaLevi explains that during the first six days of creation, Hashem created what had not previously existed. The Torah refers to this type of creation as “Melacha,” i.e. work. On Shabbos, however, Hashem did not create anything “new.” Instead, he created the world according to the system and order He established during the initial six days of creation. The Torah refers to this type
of creation as “Shvita,” i.e. rest, because Hashem “rested” from creating anything new. The Bais HaLevi says that this second type of creation was not merely Hashem “kick-starting” the world and switching it onto autopilot forever more. On the contrary, it inaugurated an ongoing creative process, one that would continue to occur every single moment into the future. Hashem continuously recreates the world, ex-nihilo, according to the preexisting pattern of creation He established during the first six days. Indeed, were He to stop creating the world, even for a picosecond, the entire universe would cease to exist. Accordingly, Shabbos is the perfect day to celebrate the creation of the world. Although the world seems to comfortably spin on its own axle, Shabbos testifies
Shabbos has nothing to do with Hashem retiring; rather, it is the day that Hashem launched the world as we know it.
that Hashem perpetually brings the world that He created in those first six days into being. Shabbos has nothing to do with Hashem retiring; rather, it is the day that Hashem launched the world as we know it. Weekly Dvar Torah F RO M ERETZ Y I S RAEL
Rebuke – why now? BY RABBI SHALOM ROSNER The Braita tells us in Massechet Megillah, “Rabbi Shimon Ben Elazar said – Ezra enacted that the Jews should read the Tochacha (rebuke) in Bechukotai two weeks before Shavuot and the Tochacha in Ki Tavo two weeks before Rosh Hashanah.” What is the significance of reading these sections before Shavuot and Rosh Hashanah and why two weeks before and not the week before? The Yerushalmi tells us about Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his son Rabbi Elazar who, on coming out from the cave where they’d been for thirteen years, saw a trapper trapping birds. When the trapper held up his net to trap a bird, a voice from heaven said “guilty” and the bird was caught. When a voice from heaven said “exempt”, the trapper missed and the bird got away. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai turned to his son and said, “if the birds have such personal hashgacha and not
one bird is caught before it’s time, then we can leave the cave free of worry for the bounty on our heads.” After spending thirteen years steeped in Torah in the cave, did these G-dly Tannaim really need the birds and a voice from Heaven to remind them of G-d’s hashgacha pratit (personal providence) in the world? Rabbi Nebenzahl says that this message is not so much for Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his son but really for us. Often in life, we know of a value or halacha, we read something that sounds logical, but it remains in our minds as an intellectual achievement. It remains as “and you shall know this day” but never reaches “and consider it in your heart” (Devarim 4:39). Rabbi Nebenzahl explains that the whole purpose of mussar, studying ethics, is to take what’s already in a person’s mind and to bring it to action. The book Mesillat Yesharim opens with the author writing that he’s not teaching us anything new, just reminding us of what we already
know. The Rambam explains that the mitzvah of Temurah (Substitution) in this week’s Parasha also echoes this idea. An animal that is designated for a specific sacrifice cannot be switched with a different animal. If switched, it’s a sin and both animals must be sacrificed. The Rambam explains in Hilchot Temurah that this is because the Torah understands a person’s mindset. We are often inspired to do something but that inspiration can be fleeting. It’s human nature to want to amass wealth and in our excitement we may promise to give something but then regret it afterwards. The inspiration doesn’t always last. So an animal designated for sacrifice remains the designated one. The Torah laws are Divine Advice from the Great Advisor, all for our own good, ensuring that our actions follow what our minds know is right. This may explain the break between the messages of Tochacha and Shavuot. If
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Shavuot would fall straight after we read the Tochacha we may do good only out of shock or fear. With an extra week to digest and imbibe the messages, internalize them and act based on them, then it shows we didn’t just hear the Tochacha, “and you shall know this day”, but have also placed it deep in our hearts. We can relate this to the current period between Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim, the time of year to renew our connection to Eretz Yisrael. So many of us know Eretz Yisrael is the place to be but often that knowledge remains in our minds and doesn’t translate into “consider it in your heart”. Let us try to strengthen our connection to the Land of Israel – to think more seriously about moving here, visiting here and sending our children here – to not only have Eretz Yisrael in our minds but also in our actions. Behar and Bechukotai are the names of this week’s two Sidrot. Behar has the laws of a special year called Shemitta. Every 7th year, it is forbidden to work the Land of Israel and the Land enjoys its very own “Shabbat”. One is allowed to enjoy the fruits of their field but may not protect it or bar anyone from entering the field and enjoying it. It is free for all, for people and for one’s animals. After seven cycles of seven years (i.e. after 49 years) it is another special year called “Yovel”. In it, the land rests once again and Jewish slaves are set free. Land land returns to its original owner. Hashem reminds us that we should not worry about where we will get food from when we keep Shemitta and that He will ensure there is enough crop to last for all the years the field is not worked on plus extra!
We are taught to be honest in business, certainly not to cheat or overcharge people and not to cause people loss. Parshat Bechukotai starts by telling us the wonderful blessing that reach the Jewish people so long as they keep the Mitzvot and engage in Torah study with effort. Once they stop doing so, unfortunately, unpleaseant things can happen. Hashem ends the harsh warnings with stating that He will remember the covenant He made with our forefathers and will not leave us – even in Galut in the difficult times, He is there for us. Bechukotai ends with the laws of Hedkesh – one who offers the value of themselves or their property to the Beit Hamikdash, how it is to be calculated. We stand up in shul and say, “Chazak Chazak Venitchazek”!

Behar Bechukotai
In a nutshell Once again, we are in for a double treat! Behar and Bechukotai are the names of this week’s two Sidrot. Behar opens with the laws of a special year called Shemitta. In it, the land lies fallow for another year. In addition, Jewish slaves are set free and land returns to its original owner. Hashem reminds us that we should not worry about our income when we keep Shemitta and that He will ensure there is enough crop to last for three years (when there is Yovel) and two years (for regular Shemitta years). The Torah then details the laws of fair trade. If a
person knows that a field is going back to its original owner during Yovel, they must calculate how many years are left until Yovel when selling it. We are reminded not to charge our fellow interest. If a fellow Jew is sold as a slave we are reminded to set him free after 6 years and not rule him too harshly and to remember what it was like to be a slave and that it was Hashem Who set us free. There is a Mitzvah for a family member to redeem a field if it is sold. In general we are cautioned to be honest in business not to cheat or overcharge people and not to cause people loss. Parshat Bechukotai starts by telling us the wonderful blessing that reach the Jewish people so long as they keep the Mitzvot and engage in Torah study with effort. Once they stop doing so, it is downhill from there and the “Kelalot” – the curses befall the Jewish people. This section of the Torah

is read softly and a bit quicker than usual as it is not all pleasant reading, but as the nation charged with the mission of Torah and Mitzvot, we must take life seriously and keep the Mitzvot. War or peace, famine or plenty, good health or illness, wild animals or animal kept safely away, are all opposites described by the Torah and our Prophets for keeping the Torah as compared with not keeping the Torah. (Obviously we cannot judge an individual, but as for the community this is something to be aware of). Hashem ends the harsh warnings with stating that He will remember the covenant He made with our ancestors and will not reject us – even in Galut in the difficult times, He is there for us. Dear Kehillah member עמו”ש, It has been an honour to represent the residents of Kersal over the past few years, speaking up on your behalf at Salford City Council on a wide range of matters. Aside from regular issues of bin collections, potholes and litter, we have had the privilege to have been able to assist on many other matters - both private and community - such as planning permission and disability funding etc. More recently, we’ve thankfully been able to help out and advise on lockdown-related queries inc. grants, business and shul reopenings etc. During our respective terms, we’ve worked closely with the town’s rabbonim and askonim, as well as local emergency services and organisations. We’ve also had great support and worked in conjunction with Conservative counterparts in Parliament, working on various matters including, more recently, the restrictions at Places of Worship. Whilst we’re grateful for what we have been able to achieve thus far, there is plenty more work to be done! We welcome Mr. Azmat Husain who is eager to join our team and work alongside us, giving Kersal & Broughton Park an even stronger voice. Due to boundary changes, all 3 seats in Kersal & Broughton Park (as the ward is to be renamed) are up for re-election. DE... A VISION OF A VIBRANT
WARE COMMUNITY & BEYOND "THE FUTURE OF THE EDGWARE COMMUNITY WILL BE DETERMINED BY ITS PROVISION FOR ITS YOUTH"
“As Edgware expands there is obviously an increasing demand to run programs for our youth. It is with great fortune that Netzach have the foresight and vision to create this space for the use of all of the community.” “A Youth Hub would so benefit the teenagers of the Edgware community. Having a safe and positive environment to socialise with friends is crucial to their development.”
