Just one man can de cide the military’s rules of engagement and that is the chief of staff.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz backed Lapid on IDF rules of engagement. “Only the chief of staff is responsible for the rules of engagement and there can be no political interference in the decision,” he said. “The military rules mean to address security needs along with the IDF’s moral code, and are maintained diligently”. Patel drew the wrath of Israel’s leaders in his comments on Tuesday.

The IDF stressed in its report that troops were firing during the entire incident “with the intent of neutralising the terrorists who shot at IDF soldiers”. The scars of history do not disappear, but rather shape and build us. We are working on behalf of the past, for the sake of the future.”

“That awful event remains a wound, resist ant to healing,” he observed. “All those of us who remember those dark and endless hours in that bitter September of 1972 carry in our hearts the same scar, the same moments in which we followed with excruciating anxi ety and boundless concern the conflicting reports coming in every few hours from the Olympic village in Munich. We struggled to fathom that Jewish and Israeli athletes, judg es, and coaches were being held by terrorists on German soil. We prayed so hard for a dif ferent ending. But our hearts were pained and broken, our hopes, dashed.” Herzog said the Israeli delegation had ar rived in Munich in the spirit of the Olympic movement before brutally being murdered by a Palestinian terror organisation just be cause they were Jews and Israelis. “This brutal and barbaric massacre was a momentous human tragedy in which the values of morality and justice were trampled, human dignity was erased, all semblance of humanity, lost,” he said. “It was the moment the Olympic torch was snuffed out.” Herzog added, “For us, as a people and as a country, this massacre has always been a national disaster. It desecrated the unifying and cohesive sanctity of the Olympics, the ultimate symbol of sports, and smeared its flag with blood. The only ones who can for give are the dead, the living have no right to forget.’Theformer president’s son said that grap pling with memories of the Shoah was “com plicated” for Germans as some deny the past or want to let bygones be bygones.

BY DAVID SAFFER President Isaac Herzog visited Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp to conclude his state visit to Germany. In a highly poignant moment Israel’s pres ident recited Kaddish for Holocaust victims as his late father, the Sixth President of Israel, Chaim Herzog, did at the death camp in 1987 as the first Israeli head of state. Herzog was in the British forces that liber ated Bergen-Belsen on 15 April 1945. Kel Malei Rachamim was recited by the same rabbi who participated in the ‘87 me morial visit. Herzog and Steinmeier paid tribute to the memory of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust, alongside a memorial stone placed in 1987 by Israel’s then president. Herzog said, “When the camp was liber ated, a military convoy rolled into the site headed by an officer, who stood on a wood en crate and shouted in Yiddish, in front of hundreds of people, hundreds of human skeletons,“Yidden!‘Yidden!Esleben noch Yidden!’ (‘Jews! On behalf of the past and for the sake of the Addressingfuture.”Holocaust survivors, Herzog said the passage of time had not dulled the memory of atrocities inflicted, their heroism or ability to emerge from dust and ashes, to rebuild.Tothe young people, Herzog said there was a duty to remind people of the Holocaust and the resistance from generation to generation.

Steinmeier said, “The Holocaust is a pain ful part of German history, which belongs to us, and which we must not deny, nor do we ever wish to Addressingforget.”Herzog, Steinmeier was moved to be standing by his side. He said, “The friendship between our countries, between Germany and Israel, is a great gift for me. The past constitutes a com mitment for us, and we wish to shape the future together. I promise you, we Germans are conscious of our responsibility. “In front of the graves of the dead at Ber gen-Belsen, and of the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, every form of antisemitism, which unfortunately still exists today in Germany, is a warning sign for our country. Antisemitism must have no space in our society. Wherever it becomes apparent, we must oppose it, forcefully.”

Herzog and Steinmeier met with Holo caust survivors Albrecht Weinberg, Jovan Rajs, Naomi Rinat, Menachem Z. Rosensaft, and Jochevet Ritz-Olewski. The survivors told their stories and spoke about the importance of remembrance and learning the lessons of history.

President Isaac Herzog recalled the atrocities of the Holocaust in a historic address at the German Bundestag on Tuesday. Speaking during a state visit, Herzog went on to praise the close relationship that now exists between Israel and Germany. Israel’s president dedicated the Yizkor prayer to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis then recalled how Germany had been a home to rabbinic leaders and Jewish titans of culture, intellect and science. There were also pioneers of social work and influential Zionist leaders but, Herzog noted, Germany was also home to “pogroms, riots and brutal acts of slaughter” and the “darkest abyss in the annals of the family of nations”, the“NeverHolocaust.inhuman history was there a campaign like the one the Nazis and their accomplices conducted to annihilate the Jewish People,” he said. Recalling his father, the Sixth President of Israel, Chaim Herzog, was among the first Brit ish officers who liber ated the death camps in Germany, he said, “I shall never forget how he described to me the horrors he witnessed.”

It was also “difficult and painful” in Israel.

Herzog spoke about Israel’s contribution to culture, medicine, academia, science and other fields, its strong partnership with the nations of Europe and efforts to resolve global crises. He also noted that Israel was a “pow erful engine of pan-regional partnership” in the Middle East through the Abraham Ac cords and as nation never feared criticism but would always “stick to the truth”. Herzog added that Israel’s relations with its neighbours was genuine. “Israel has always aspired, and will con tinue to aspire, to good neighbourliness and peace with all states and nations in the Middle East, and of course also with our Palestinian neighbours,” he observed. “It requires us, and it also requires the Palestinians, to look direct ly at reality and to make every effort to change it for the better. Herzog called on the family of nations to help stop its plans to develop nuclear weapons.“Thepossession of weapons of mass de struction by a UN member state that calls on a daily basis for the annihilation of another UN member state is simply inconceivable,” he said. “The guideline must be clear, a state that denies the Holocaust, a state that acts out of hatred and belligerency, a state that threatens the State of Israel’s right to exist is ineligible to sign deals that will only embolden it.” Herzog added, “The international commu nity must stand on the right side of history, set clear conditions, impose fierce and essential sanctions, create an impermeable buffer be tween Iran and nuclear capabilities, it must act, and not back down.” He continued, “The State of Israel will de fend itself and will fight by all means neces sary against threats to it and to its citizens. I call on the whole world, don’t stand idly by.” Herzog concluded by praising how Ger many had built an exemplary state since the Second World War as a central power in Eu rope and “GermanyNATO.has demonstrably devoted mighty efforts to commemoration and re membrance, while at the same time work ing at full-steam in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship, science, technology, and research,” he said. “The State of Israel is proud of its partnership with Germany and Ger many’s contributions to Israel’s security and prosperity.”ThePresident of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, First Lady Elke Budenbender, Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, President of the German Bundestag, Barbel Bas, President of the German Bundesrat, Bodo Ramelow, President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, Stephan Harbarth and German leaders were among those in attendance.

Israel and US missiledefence exercise Holocaust cook book could be a best seller

BY SIMCHA ABIR

A new cook book Honey Cake & Lat kes: Recipes from the Old World by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Survivors celebrates inspiring stories from Holocaust survivors and is set to be a best seller for the Jewish NewCollectedYear. and edited during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ronald S. Lauder, Chairman of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation, describes the book as a “story of hope and triumph of the human spirit”. Some 110 recipes include Blintzes, Kugel, Matzo Ball Soup, Cholent, Challah, Goulash, Kasha Varnishkes and Rugelach. There is a special chapter of classic dishes for Jewish holidays including Latkes, Charoset, Gefilte Fish, Knishes, Tzimmes. Sadly, a number of survivors who con tributed to the book passed away before its publication.Thebackstory to the book began when Lauder brought 120 survivors and families to Auschwitz-Birkenau for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp in 2020. Lauder asked attendees to share their rec ipes for gefilte fish three months later on a ZoomMariacall.Zalewska, the foundation’s executive director, received 20 versions. Zalewska and Lauder realised a book was in the offing. “Food is something they talk about,” said Lauder. “It is their contact with the past.” With Lauder’s financial support, Zalewska created a cookbook of recipes. Twenty-nine survivors of Auschwitz and Birkenau, con tributed the recipes and also their stories from before and during the war. Despite the pandemic, five survivors met in New York in October 2021 to cook some recipes that would be included in the book. Photographs at the gathering are included. The book includes a recipe for onion-free potato pancakes from Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, who died in 2016. Lauder, a close friend of the Wiesel family, contacted the writer’s widow, Marion, for the family’s recipe.Lauder hopes copies will be given as a gift to every Jewish couple at the start of their lives together. “This book brings a connection to the past,” he said. “There is no stronger connection you can have than food. You generally can’t wear your ancestors’ clothes or visit their homes. But you can prepare the same food.” All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation.

The exercise improves readiness pro cesses and the IDF Central Command’s transition to joint activity with CENTCOM on a strategic and operational level.

Israel Missile Defence Organisation, US Missile Defence Agency, Israeli Air Defence Command and US Air and Missile Defence Task Force carried out a training exercise in Elbit Systems’ battle lab last July. News of the exercise to protect Israel from ballistic threats has been released and continues a tradition of cooperation between forces. Israeli forces operated the Arrow, David’s Sling and Iron Dome air defence systems. The American forces operated the Patriot, Aegis and THAAD systems. The Israeli Test-Bed battle lab, developed by Elisra, simulates Israeli and American air defence systems. It displays and records real-time data to assist debriefings. Defence Minister Benny Gantz wel comed progress in Israel's air defence capabilities."Therelationship between Israel and the US continues to grow stronger in face of the region’s increasing threats and chal lenges, in order to maintain our security and regional stability,” he said. “Combining forces, sharing knowledge and strengthen ing the air defence of the Middle East is a message to our enemies and partners. We are strong together, we are ready to stand together against any challenge from the air, land, sea and cyber arena.” “This exercise represents another step in our extensive cooperation with the American air and missile defence forces,” added Moshe Patel, IMDO Head. “The combination of the different systems sig nificantly improves our forces’ readiness to face evolving threats on several fronts simultaneously. The battle lab is constantly adapting to meet the challenges posed by our dynamic arena." Brig. Gen. (Res.) Doron Gavish, Mission Control Centre, noted, “The strategic co operation between forces is a significant component for maintaining and improving defence capabilities in the face of shared threats. This joint exercise is an important element in training combat forces in the field.”The exercise took place in central Israel. The IAF participated in the joint exercise with forces from the European Command and, for the first time, American partners at US Central Command.

WHAT IS AN ISRAEL BOND?

Israel Bonds are backed by the full faith and credit of the State of Israel, which has always made capital and interest payments since the first Israel Bond was sold in 1951. Past performance is not an indicator of future results. Israel bonds are not tradeable and must be held to maturity.

I was delighted to hear the announcement on Monday that Liz Truss has been elected as Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party (to give it its full name) and therefore appointed as Prime Minister by HM the Queen (who we wish a refuah sheleima) the following day. I declare an interest! I was a member of her team of supporters throughout the long campaign. I was a member of two WhatsApp groups and attended several meetings and hustings – both in person and online. I dedicated many hours to the cause. I was partially responsible for the slogan “in Liz weLizTruss”!isatrue friend of the Jewish commu nity. She is also a true and long-standing friend of Israel. I was present at last year’s Conservative Friends of Israel reception at the Conservative Party Conference which she addressed as Foreign Secretary. I was personally present (albeit online) when she made her now famous commitment to the CFI during the leadership campaign to consider relocating the UK embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. I do not doubt her sin cerity for one moment. However, I do feel that this may prove easier to say than do. After all, it took Trump to achieve that result for the USA (and he didn’t have the UK Foreign Office to deal with!). I also heard her commit to con tinue funding for security for Jewish Shools, schools and institutions. She is committed to fighting anti Semitic Hate Crime – in all its forms. She has praised the contri bution to British life made by our community.Aboveall,I do not doubt her sin cerity in her desire to ensure Iran does not become a nuclear power. On a Party Political note, I be lieve her policies - particularly on the economy, are the right ones for our current situation. She is a self confessed worka holic. She admits to “not being the slickest” but hey maybe that isn’t such a bad thing! Above all, as an yone who has met her will testify, she is a nice, pleasant, warm and genuine person. As she herself says “What you see is what you get”!Mazel Tov Liz and Hatzlacha Rabbah (good luck). As HM the Queen says at the end of the Queen’s Speech at the State Open ing of Parliament, “I pray that the blessings of A-lmighty G-d rest upon your counsels. You are going to need them!

So, declarer cashed the ace of clubs and ruffed a club. Next, he led a low spade to dummy’s ten. When that held, he cashed the ace of spades and was pleased to see West’s queen appear (even though it might have been a falsecard) After ruffing a club back to hand, declarer played his spades from the top and was able to discard dummy’s remaining diamonds on them before East could ruff in with his queen of trumps.

West led the king of diamonds against this optimistic slam. Declarer won with the ace and cashed the ace and king of hearts. When West discarded a diamond on the second round of trumps, the slam was in jeopardy.

Declarer needed to discard dummy’s diamonds on his spades before East could ruff in and lead a diamond. That meant that a 3-3 spade break would be useless to him. The best chance now for 12 tricks was for East to hold four low spades and West the doubleton queen.

Declarer made four spades, four trumps, the minor-suit aces and two club ruffs for a total of 12 tricks.

The LSJS Rabbi Sacks Learning Fellowship launched with a special event on Mon day 5th September which saw the group of 20 young professionals gather for the first time. The cohort consists of a mix of students from across the UK as well as the US and South Africa, with classes taking place both online and in-person.

In 1978, Rabbi Sacks devised a course for students, which aimed to introduce the main themes and challenges of Jewish faith, practice, theology and philosophy.

The 100 Abrahamic Circles project is headquartered in Indonesia, one of the world’s most ethnoreligiously diverse but conflict-prone countries. Its ultimate ob jective is to measurably increase religious literacy, empathy, and a sense of mutual respect among the Circle members, their followers and the wider global general public.

Faith leaders have a vital role in creating accessible and inclusive communities and we know that belonging to a supportive community protects our mental health and supports mental health recovery. I believe we can do so much more by working to gether across different communities and learning from each other to tackle the rising mental health needs.”

One day, Arthur was guid ing Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go - and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologised - and Sandy immedi ately recognised Arthur’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to, ‘Darkness my old friend.’” Sandy graduated from Colum bia, earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford, married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.Oneday, while at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Arthur. This time Arthur was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.

Arthur convinced Sandy to give college another go, and prom ised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.

Dedicated for a refua sheleima for Avraham Menashe ben Chana Bracha Rabbi Nehorai said: “Go into voluntary exile to a place of Torah and do not say it will come after you, (for) it is your fellow students who will establish it in your hand and do not rely on your own under standing”.TheBartenura explains that there are two ways to explain the first two phrases:

Dear Rabbi My friend recently lost a child and has spiralled into depres sion. She has cut off contact with her closest friends and really just keeps to herself. I have been her closest friend since early child hood but I don’t know what to do in the circumstances. Do I leave her be? Do I reach out to her or mind my own business? Does Halacha have a criteria on this?

DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND

Arthur Garfunkle and Paul Simon’s first album was not a success, but the lyrics of one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, was based on that ex perience, that one day at Grand Central Station, the opening line echoing the way Sandy always greeted Art, “Hello darkness my old friend.” Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history.

Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - some body who gives to a friend.” Wishing your friend strength and comfort and wishing you strength as well to be able to provide that comfort.

Arthur kept his promise, faith fully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Arthur that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Arthur actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” “Darkness is going to take you for a walk.”

1. If one has no Torah scholars in their place of residence, they should relocate to a place where one may be found and they should not say “Torah scholars will move to where I am” - one should pursue a Torah teacher instead. FURTHERMORE one should not stay home and rely on friends who have taken the trouble to go to learn Torah that they will come home and teach you the Torah, for it is incom parable hearing Torah “second hand” to hearing it directly from a Rabbi.

Follow Rabbi Schochet at: RabbiSchochet.com Twitter: @RabbiYYS Facebook: facebook.com/Rabbiyys.

2. Alternatively, the Mishna means - go into exile to a Torah teacher and do not say the Torah will come to you. One ben efit of going to learn from a Rabbi is that by doing so your friends will affirm the Torah you learn. Learning Torah from a Rabbi in the company of fellow students is the best way to ensure one reaches the correct understanding of the materi al. Hence the conclusion of the Mishna - do not rely on your own understanding of Torah; instead sit with friends at the feet of your Rabbi and then you will truly understand Torah. The Yachin U’Voaz comments that this Mishna may also be seen as guidance for the aspiring young Yeshivah Bochur.

If they want to truly grow in Torah they need to consider (with the consent of their parents/teachers) travelling away from home and all the distractions it offers.

Mindy Dear Mindy The Torah states, “When you see your enemy’s animal struggling under his load, would you hide from helping them? Help you shall surely help them.” Inas much as the Torah is talking about a practical scenario of how one might have needed help, it is also deliberately using the analogy of an “enemy.” Even when, for whatever reason, you don’t like the person, if they were struggling and could really use your help, would you hide from helping them? What kind of person would that make you? All the more so, when we’re talking about your best friend. Yes, she is reacting in a normal manner considering the dire circumstances. It is utterly devastating and she could use all the professional help she can get. But it’s when someone cuts themselves off from all friends that they could really use a friend.62years ago, Arthur Garfun kel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Arthur met a student from Buf falo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Arthur and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by calamity. His vision became blurry and as the problem grew worse, ultimately, Sandy received the devastating news that glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind. Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financial ly-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, his buddy Arthur showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced.

Avraham was the first to discover a “one G-d”, but not by studying cold and imper sonal science. He uncovered a world which was delicately orchestrated to support life and he sensed an intelligent and compas sionate Creator who had calibrated His world for human welfare. Avraham craved to spread knowledge of Hashem, but, more so, to mimic His moral behavior. For this reason, he was not just a philosopher, but also a do-gooder who extended prosperity to his ancient world. He ended wars, dis tributed charity, forged bonds of friendship and loyalty, and stabilized a violent and chaotic world. He began the project of relandscaping a fallen world in the image of divine will. His descendants have continued his tradition by forging a world of science and progress, supported by enlightened forms of government, and boosted by egalitarian economic systems. They have launched societies which respect the dignity of all religions, races, and genders, and which preserve the supreme value of human life.

Torah from Israel September 11:

BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

MUSLIM RAGE

In his book entitled “What Went Wrong”, a Middle-Eastern historian named Ber nard Lewis, correctly identified “Muslim rage” as the root of this modern wave of Anti-Western hostility. For centuries, the Islamic world enjoyed supremacy in the fields of arts, sciences and commerce and was the dominant military power. As Islam rapidly spread both East to Europe and West to Russia and Asia, Muslims had every reason to believe that, within a short period of time, the entire world would convert to their new religion. For the first 700 years since its founding in the 7th century, there was great reason for Islamic optimism. It was the one “true religion” and it was quickly capturing both territory and human hearts. The prophecies of the Koran appeared to be springing to life.

The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/ Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York. What Went Wrong

Sadly, the state of our world doesn’t always reflect Hashem’s desire for human welfare. Poverty, war, repressive political institu tions, and natural causes, all ravage hu manity introducing hardship and suffering. Often, our world feels asynchronous with the divine will. Hashem desires human happiness, but the world and its human inhabitants don’t always cooperate.

THE IMAGE OF G-D IN ISLAM Throughout the Koran, G-d is presented as kind and merciful. Yet, He was often misconstrued by various Islamic sects as angry and vengeful. This may not represent mainstream Islamic theology, but through out history, this portrait of a militant and wrathful G-d has reared its face in various Islamic fundamentalist movements.

September 11th was a global trauma. Thou sands of people lost their lives and millions of others saw both their theories of religion and their notions of security shattered. A world presumed to be safe was exposed as extremely dangerous and deadly. Toward the end of the previous century, we assumed that we had launched a post-cold war era of international calm and inter connected prosperity. We hoped that, after a tumultuous 20th century during which two world wars took hundreds of millions of lives, we could settle peacefully into a future of international harmony. All those hopes were dashed on Septem ber 11th, and we began to realize that, in 21st century, the civilized world is facing an unholy alliance between terror and reli gion. We naively thought that religious wars were a relic of the past, and that a modern secular world which separates religion and state had eliminated murder in the name of religion. Sadly, Sept 11 was just the begin ning: innocents continue to be murdered by religious fanatics and our world contin ues its critical struggle against the blight of Islamic fundamentalist terror. Overwhelmingly, the broader Islamic world still shares common cultural, moral, and social values with the West, preaches tolerance toward others and desires to live peacefully with other nations. That being said, Islamic fundamentalist terror draws upon core beliefs of Islam which are being expressed through hostility and hatred toward the infidel. How did civilization get here and what does religion have to say about the jihad being waged against Western values and Western culture?

Gradually, both Islamic supremacy and Islamic influence precipitously declined.

Jews are religiously driven to “resolve” this discrepancy between the fallen human condition and the will of Hashem. For a Jew, Tikkun ha’olam isn’t just a social pro ject but a theological mission. The march of science and the advance of the human condition are religious crusades. Hashem wants us to improve our condition and to enrich human experience, and human progress is a religious calling.

First Islam lost its military supremacy, as it was ousted from Europe and from Russia. Afterwards, Western forces invaded its heartland, establishing colonies and out posts of political and economic influence.

The war against these infidels is a holy war and the military defeat of these “enemies of G-d”, is clearly G-d’s interest and agenda.

Finally, over the past 150 years, Western culture has penetrated Islamic societies, unseating old fashioned “true” Muslim values. These cataclysmic shifts generated rage and hostility toward the West in gener al, and toward America, the seat of modern Western culture, in particular. Though Lewis penned his book before the tragic events of Sept 11th, his prescient warnings erupted with volcanic force on this dark day of Lewistragedy.also traces numerous political, social and cultural factors which hampered the progress of Muslim civilization, while also identifying various factors which cat apulted Western civilization to its current position of technological and cultural supremacy.

THE JEWISH IMAGE OF HASHEM Hashem is compassionate, cares about His creatures and seeks their welfare. All human beings are divine creatures, even those who have not yet recognized Hashem’s presence. When any creature of Hashem suffers, He is pained, and He takes absolutely no delight in the suffering of innocents.Manisdivinely empowered with freedom of choice with the hope that he achieves a life of virtue and morality. Those who wander from this desired path are always afforded the opportunity for teshuva orInrepentance.Hashem’s messianic vision the entire world recognizes His presence, conducts moral lives, and enjoys broad peace and prosperity. Those who commit grievous crimes and remain unrepentant are judged and punished, but without delight or vindictive retribution. Sinners aren’t considered ‘unholy” or the “enemies of G-d” and there is no larger battle between the forces of G-d and the enemies of G-d. The only battle lies within the conscience of every man who must chose between obedience and disobedience to Hashem. Hashem isn’t hateful, He isn’t angry, and he doesn’t dislike any of His creatures.

The progress of Western civilization was driven by a religious impulse- to synchro nize the world with the will of a kind and caring G-d.

Islam was initially spread through military conflict and through the military conquest of pre-Islamic cultures. Islam casts Mohammed as a prophet but also as a warrior and conqueror. Converts to Islam were perceived as redeemed, while those who didn’t embrace this religion belonged to the “house of unbelief” and were portrayed as infidels or enemies of G-d.

Jews must protect the face of a kind and compassionate Hashem in our world. He has mercy on all His creatures and takes no delight in human suffering. He takes great pride when humans employ their G-d-given creativity to improve their own condition. He is a G-d of mercy to all His creatures.

TIKKUN HA’OLAM

In Islam there is a vengeful or angry quality to G-d which fundamentalism highlights. G-d delights in the suffering of infidels or non-Muslims.OnceG-dis depicted as angry or ca pricious, the religious motive to improve dysfunction in our world is diminished.

RELIGIOUS ROOTS? Are there religious roots to this historical shift? Can religion explain why Islam stalled, while a Western world based pri marily on Jewish religious ideas, continued to flourish and, eventually, overtook the Is lamic world? Are there differences between Judaism and Islam which have accounted for this historical swing?

On September 11th it wasn’t just the passengers of those four planes who were kidnapped. The “face of Hashem” in our world was kidnapped by those terrorists and continues to be disfigured by Islamic fundamentalists who murder in His name.

If G-d dislikes his enemies perhaps the world should remain broken, so that those enemies continue to suffer. If G-d cares only about the true believers, He can be counted upon to deliver prosperity to that limited group and there is little reason to crusade for the general advance of the human condition. Once G-d’s image is tarnished and He is viewed as hateful, or worse, as capricious, there is little religious motivation for change and for progress.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 23:25-24:4

How do we relate to safety rules? Just as sensible, logical rules or also as mitzvot? Before driving a car, we need to check oil, water, and tire pressure. We need to pay attention that our windows have ba by-proof bars. A vacation cabin must have a fence around the swimming pool. We do not allow our children to swim at a beach without a lifeguard. Is this banal? No – it’s a mitzvah. These examples appear to be a simple, primary level of observance but they are super important. It is forbidden to live in a house without a guard rail. Rabbi Berel Wein goes deeper and writes that this is not only a physical guard rail but also a spiritual one, a warning sign and symbol for “don’t”, for what is not allowed in one’s house. In a new house, a new home, we need to establish rules regarding Shabbat, festivals, food etc. If we don’t, there will be “blood” in our house as we “fall” to a “spiritual death”. Life without a guard rail is something fearful and dangerous, but when there are limits it’s easier to move around. Limita tions not only make a safer building, but serve to build up your life as well. Our commentators give many explana tions as to why the verse speaks about “a newForhouse”.instance, each time we enter a new house, we rise to a new rank or higher level in life. Rabbi Nachman writes: “It is known that the evil urge frequently provokes the person who keeps rising, one level after the next, in life. Therefore, he must be very careful, about making a guard rail for his roof and his stairs, that he should make for himself a barrier and a fence in order not to fall, Heaven forbid.”

The Lubavitcher Rebbe writes that a “new house” is really a new marriage. The bride and groom need to set up a guard rail, to establish rules and restrictions in their new relationship, around which they should put up a sign: “Caution, under construction!”.Andthecommentator Degel Machaneh Efraim, Rabbi Moshe Chayim Efraim, grandson of the Ba’al Shem Tov, says that the new house is Rosh Hashanah, the new year. “This day is the beginning of your deeds (for the new year), and on every Rosh Hashanah the world is renewed and ‘a new house’ or a new world is construct ed, for which you must make a guard rail”. You should take upon yourself a new restriction, build a new guard rail, in the NewMayYear.we all merit to put up a guard rail – a boundary and a fence – around each new stage, each new level reached, in our lives. Sivan Rahav-Meir is the World Mizrachi Scholar-in-Residence and an Israeli jour nalist and lecturer.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 21:22-22:7

It says in Devarim 22:8: “When you build a new house, you shall make a guard rail for your roof, so that you shall not cause blood [to be spilled] in your house, that the one who falls should fall from it [the roof].”Rashi: guard rail – a fence surrounding theIt’sroof.interesting to note that thousands of years later, the same Hebrew word for guard rail (ma’akeh) in the above verse is applicable and relevant. We speak about the same guard rail in Biblical Hebrew and in Modern Hebrew, in the Torah and in life Rabbitoday.Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, otherwise known at the Netziv, says the following:“Aperson is allowed to live in his house without a mezuzah, as long as he will put one up as soon as he can get one… which is not so with a guard rail, that depends on the construction of a house, since it is for bidden to live in a home without a guard rail, and therefore it is more appropriate to validate his building of a new home with the mitzvah of guard rail .”

HAFTARAH Taken from the book of Yeshaya, this is the next of the ‘haftarot of consolation’ read after Tisha B’Av. Yeshaya calls out to Jerusalem to no longer be desolate and barren, but to break out into jubilant song, in celebration of G-d showing her eternal kindness and mercy. The haftarah of Re’eh (which was not read two weeks ago due to Shabbat Rosh Chodesh) is added in many communities, in which Yeshaya prophesies about a messianic future in which “all of G-d’s children will be His students” and the Jews will be protected from any harm.

Ki

Weekly Dvar Torah FROM ERETZ YISRAEL

SidraTeitzeiSummary

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 24:5-13

A man is not allowed to wear women’s clothing, nor is a woman allowed to wear men’s clothing. If one sees a bird’s nest with eggs in it, there is a mitzvah to send away the mother bird before taking the eggs (shiluach haken).

Ki Tetzei contains many mitzvot, a selec tion of which has been included here. It starts with the laws of the ‘female captive’ and her potential marriage to a soldier in battle. It then discusses the laws of a man who has two wives (this later became pro hibited in normative rabbinic law). He has a firstborn son with the wife he does not love, and another son with his preferred spouse, but he must still give the firstborn rights to the son of the former, not to son of the latter. The laws of the ‘wayward and rebellious son’ are then detailed.

If one spots someone else’s animal wandering off the path, there is a mitzvah to look after it and return it to its owner; this applies to all lost objects. If one sees a fallen animal on the road, there is a mitzvah to help its owner pick it up.

28 JUDAISM 8 SEPTEMBER 2022TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

For the first year of marriage, the couple should prioritise spending time together; the husband is not to serve in the army (other than in a case of pressing national need). When lending money to a pauper, it is forbidden to hold onto security for the loan if this will cause the borrower discomfort.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 24:14-25:19

BY SIVAN RAHAV-MEIR

A man who becomes accidentally impure must immerse himself in a mikveh. There is a mitzvah to look after an escaped slave, rather than returning him to his idolatrous master (see Ramban). The laws prohibiting the charging of interest on loans are mentioned. A vow made to bring an offering to the Temple must be kept within an allotted time.

Point to Consider: What type of vineyard produce must be left for paupers to take? (see Rashi to 24:21)

An employer should pay a hired labourer on the day that the work is done. One must not display bias for or against a wid ow or a convert. Paupers are entitled to certain leftover crops from the harvest in the field and the vineyard. The mitzvah of yibum (levirate marriage) is detailed – if a man dies childless, a surviving brother should marry the widow, in the hope that they will have children to continue the deceased’s name. If the brother does not wish to marry the widow, he performs a ceremony called chalitzah. All weights and measures need to be honest and ac curate. The sidra ends with the verses that we also read before Purim, on Shabbat Zachor, entreating us to remember how Amalek attacked the Israelites after their departure from Egypt.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – DEVARIM 21:10-21

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 22:8-23:7 When building a new house, one must erect a fence on the roof to prevent some one falling off. One must not plant certain mixtures of seeds in one’s field or vine yard (kilayim), nor may one plough with an ox and donkey together, nor wear wool and linen together in the same garment (sha’atnez). If a man falsely accuses his wife of having had pre-marital relations, a heavy fine is levied against him. Whilst men from Ammon and Moab (extant in Biblical times) are allowed to convert to Judaism, they are only allowed to marry fellow converts.

“When a man and woman marry… he shall be free for his home for one year, and shall gladden his wife whom he has married” (Devarim 25:4)

• The second is where the pieces within a structure are organized in such a way that it provides practical use and accessibility.

ORDER ITSELF

• The first is order for the sake of order, which is a practical form of order, where pieces simply come together in an orderly, organized structure.

Countless Torah themes and halachos are centered around the value of the commu nity (tzibbur/klal) and how one must ded icate themselves to the greater good of the Jewish People. If everyone is unique and individually important, how can we under stand the concept of unity and the need to work toward becoming part of something bigger than ourselves? Must we sacrifice our uniqueness and individuality for the sake of the “klal,” for the greater good of the community? Many feel as though Judaism aims to remove one’s individual identity and sense of self, instead training us to be a uniform group of people, solely committed to Hashem and Klal Yisrael. What is the deeper Jewish approach to this struggle and conflict between individuality and community, between uniqueness and being part of a unified group? In order to grasp the relationship be tween individuality and community, let us study the concepts of order and structure, based on the ideas of Rav Eliyahu Dessler.

Whenever we learn a Torah topic or a sugya (topic) in Gemara, we always start by looking for the source of this concept in the Torah. This is because the Torah source will account for all the applications within the topic. Learning Torah is about tracing things back to their source and understanding the ideas and principles of life itself, learning how to understand and align ourselves with Hashem’s will. The same is true in the scientific world; physicists are looking for the “GUT,” the grand unifying theory that can ac count for all expressed physical phenomena.

The second level of order is where some thing is ordered in such a way that it yields practical benefits. For example, a library is organized in such a way that gives one access to a tremendous amount of information; the order facilitates this accessibility. Rav El chanan Wasserman asked, is it better to have twenty thousand books or twenty books? While many are quick to say twenty thou sand, the answer is not so simple. It actually depends; do you have an organizing index? If you have twenty thousand unorganized books, they will be nearly useless. You won’t be able to find a single book you are looking for. With the twenty books, you will at least have access to each of them. However, if you have a system of organization for the twenty thousand books, then of course it is better to have twenty thousand books.

Finding Your Role within the Cosmic Symphony of Life

THE HIGHEST ORDER

• The third is where the pieces within the structure come together in such a way that the ensuing result transcends the sum of theLetparts.usexplore each form of order in further depth.

The world we live in is exquisitely structured and ordered down to the finest details. Anyone who has studied physics, biology, or chemistry, or any form of science for that matter, has gotten a taste of the beauty and sophistication of our world’s order. Every human being has an inner order, which allows our bodies to maintain homeostasis. The order of our world has many important implications and applications as well. For example, every person’s inner order is manifest and expressed as their outer order as well. If someone is riding on a train where the sound of train wheels on the tracks is making a continuous and steady noise, then if you are in a happy and excited internal state, heading toward a highly anticipated destination, you will joyfully hum along to the beat of the noise. However, if you are in a bad mood, perhaps after a long and stressful day, that very same noise will drive you cra zy. In other words, your internal order affects how you perceive your external order.

LEVELS OF ORDER Rav Eliyahu Dessler, a prominent twenti eth century Jewish thinker and author of Michtav Me’Eliyahu, writes about three different levels of order (Michtav Me’Eliya hu, vol. 1, p. 92).

If you’ve ever walked the streets of a crowded city, surrounded by thousands of people walking in different directions, you may have felt almost invisible. We live on a planet with over seven billion people; Planet Earth itself is a speck in the universe.

The same is true of all forms of wisdom (chochmah), especially Torah wisdom. A truly wise person, in any field, will pursue the underlying principles and concepts, not the endless facts and applications. As the Ramchal explains in several places (Da’as Tevunos, Derech Hashem), this is because the underlying principles contain all the facts and applications within them. An organized and sophisticated thinker will always look for the fundamental concepts and principles that contain and explain all the expressed phenomena and details. If someone asked you whether you wanted a hundred-dollar bill or ten thousand pennies, which would you prefer? Obviously, the single bill, because it contains all ten thousand pennies within it but is a great deal easier to carry around. The same is true for the principles and applications of wisdom. Every single principle contains endless applications, de tails, and facts. One who is wise will seek out the principle; one who isn’t will be satisfied with facts and applications.

ORDER FOR PRACTICAL BENEFIT

The third form of order and structure is fundamentally different from the first two; in this level of order, pieces come together in such a way that they create something greater than the sum of their parts. It’s where the parts come together into a oneness in a way that creates something that transcends the parts themselves. (In neurobiology and physics, this would be referred to as “emer gentTakephenomena.”)aradioforexample; it is composed of numerous parts and components that, on their own, are practically worthless. Howev er, when these same pieces are organized in exactly the right way, something emanates from them: a radio signal. This type of order is completely different from the first two forms of order. When a library is organized, you are still left with nothing more than the books on the shelves; and when the library is disorganized, each book still maintains its individual value. However, within this third level of order, each individual piece is worth less when all the pieces are not unified, and transcendent when the pieces are organized properly and connected. This level of order — a unity that tran scends the sum its parts — is a deep and fundamental topic, and serves as the under lying principle for answering our original questions. As an individual member of Klal Yisrael, we must determinedly search for our own uniqueness but then strive to fully devote that uniqueness to the klal, to that which transcends our limited selves. Our true greatness lies in finding our greatness within that which is greater than ourselves. In our next article, we will delve deeper into this topic in order to build a paradigm through which we can answer our original questions on an even deeper level.

If our planet is so infinitesimally small rela tive to the universe, and within our planet, each of us is only one of more than seven billion people, how are we supposed to feel special and Compoundingunique?this difficulty is the Torah’s emphasis on unity and community.

On the one hand, we all believe that we are unique and special. On the other hand, we sometimes struggle to experience our individuality, feeling almost lost in the crowd.

NEW! The guidance and principles of Shaar HaBitachon (Reliance on Hashem) of Chovos HaLev avos, written nearly a thousand years ago, continue to resonate today.

Published over 250 years ago by Rav Alexander Ziskind of Horodna, Sefer Yesod VeShoresh Ha’Avodah outlines the kavanos, the intentions we should have before performing any mitzvah. It also brilliantly describes the intensity and kavanos we should have in our prayers, and the deeper meaning of specific tefillos This volume includes a phrase-by-phrase translation, elucidation, detailed explanatory notes and a summary at the end of each chapter. Finally, we can bring the author’s passion, fervor and holiness into our own lives, and into our own mitzvos and tefillos, profoundly deepening our connection to prayer and to our Creator.

As a work of one of the early Rishonim, Chovos HaLevavos quotes and alludes to the full range of Tanach and the Talmud. A reader can easily lose track of the author’s complex thought, and miss his point. In this work, Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Klugman, a Rav and maggid shiur, who has taught Shaar HaBitachon to scholars and layman, selects the guidance and principles of Shaar HaBitachon, using the author’s own words. The Concise Shaar HaBitachon addresses the countless perplexing challenges that confront every Jew in the contemporary world. For any Jew who wants to come closer to Hashem, The Concise Shaar HaBitachon is required reading. In 2017, the EU introduced legislation that all mobile phone networks in EU countries were no longer allowed to charge for regular calla, texts and data usage when roaming in another EU country. However, network providers still had to pay overseas providers wholesale costs for this usage.

At Smartinet, many of our clients travel overseas from time to time, some more than others. Many of our clients also call overseas on a regular basis. We therefore introduced various mobile phone plans that don’t charge for roaming in the EU, and other plans that also don’t charge in many other popular destinations, such as the USA & Israel.

In some cases, this propelled some network providers to increase their regular monthly line rental charges, in order to cover the cost of EU roaming. In other words, some people who didn’t travel to the EU, were helping to cover the cost of those who did travel to the EU. Now that Brexit is behind us (for better or for worse), most UK mobile phone providers have reintroduced roaming fees within the EU. This fee is usually about £2 per day.

However, their myopia might still be worsening. This means that as children grow, their myopia may progress, requiring stronger prescriptions. If a man goes to war and wants to marry a lady from the people he fought, the Torah says she has to shave off all her hair and spend a month crying in his house. Then we’ll see if he still wants her. If he does, she has to convert and even then, it’s not a good thing to Ifdo.a thirteen year old boy steals meat and wine from his parents, he is put to death! What?! This is to stop him growing up as a terrible person – but wait – if he also steals from other people, he gets away with it. Both Parents have to be the same height and their voices have to sound the same. Both parents must be alive and healthy. Do you know how many times it happened? Never. We have to bury a dead person straight away! When you find a lost object, there’s a special mitzvah to return it. You should put up signs. If it’s worth less than a penny or if no one will be able to prove they lost it, like an unmarked ball, it doesn’t have to be returned. In the time of the Bait Hamikdash, there was a place outside Yerushalayim, where people would come to announce what they lost or found. When you see an animal struggling under heavy packages, you have to help the owner. .It’s tzaar baalei Chayim, not being cruel to animals. Also, when you take eggs from a nest, you have to send the mother away so she doesn’t see.

Mikel Arteta’s side is packed with talent and appear to be top four challenges once again. They should be far too strong for Frank Lampard’s team, who have yet to win a game, although they did battle to a deserved draw last time out with Liverpool at Goodison Park.

The Reds picked up a fourth successive win with £82m Antony enjoying a scoring debut at Old Trafford after early season woes. Marcus Rashford bagged a brace for Erik ten Hag’s side who ended the Gunners unblemished record. Bukayo Saka scored for the league leaders.

Moyes was outraged when referee Andrew Madley ruled Jarrod Bowen had fouled Mendy when he consulted the pitchside monitor. Ben Chilwell had equalised for Chelsea after Michail Antonio opened the scoring before the late drama. Another game where VAR received media criticism was Newcastle Unit ed versus Crystal Palace which ended goalless at St James Park. The key moment of the match came when Tyrick Mitchell scored an own goal. Referee Michael Salisbury award ed the goal then ruled Joe Willock had fouled Palace keeper Vicente Guaita to the astonishment of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe who diplomatically said he was “very surprised” by the decision.

Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte’s teams have made great starts and sit a point behind early pacesetters Arsenal who will look to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat against a resurgent Manchester United when they welcome lowly Everton to the Emirates on Sunday.

Reiss Mogilner scored six goals as Maccabi London Lions thumped Scrabble A in the second round of the Cyril Anekstein Cup. The Premier League side racked up a 16-0 win with Daniel Green and Michael Kenley both bagging a hat-trick.
