Make the Most of Your Students’ Arts Education Journey

Enhance your students’ arts experience and extend their learning in the classroom before and after our shows, exhibitions and events.

Our resources help you connect your excursion to the syllabus, whilst providing a range of ideas and activities to enable your students to achieve a greater level of engagement with the content

We also place high importance on providing experiences for students to further develop their practical skill levels and career pathways. Therefore, where possible, we offer opportunities for your students to work directly with practicing arts professionals.

The resources available for our offerings vary and are indicated in the coloured tab at the top of the right-hand page throughout this brochure, using the key outlined here.

CURRICULUM LINKS

Curriculum links have been developed to connect your excursion with the NSW State Syllabus. These assist you in choosing a show, exhibition or event that links to your lesson plans and supports your students in meeting their learning outcomes.

ONLINE MEDIA RESOURCES

Media resources may include videos, podcasts, image galleries and/or interactive web pages. They can provide students with further insight into the artists or cast and creative teams, as well as behind-the-scenes into the rehearsal process, curatorial decisions and development of the tour. You can access available media resources for each of our offerings from their individual event pages on The Joan and Penrith Regional Gallery’s websites.

4

Q&A SESSIONS

Q&A or In Conversation sessions allow school groups to gain a deeper understanding into the production, exhibition, or event. Held after the performance with the cast and/or creative team, or with the artists in conjunction with an exhibition, they give your students the unique chance to ask all their burning questions. This helps your group to further comprehend the content they have experienced and to adapt the ideas discussed into their own arts practice.

TEACHERS RESOURCE KITS AND STUDY GUIDES

Teachers resource kits are designed to assist you in devising pre- and post-excursion lesson plans and activities that link directly to the curriculum. Study guides are created to help students engage with the work through access to focus questions and extra information around the production or exhibition. Where available, these resources can be downloaded from the web page for each event on our websites.

WORKSHOPS

In-person or digital workshops led by arts professionals and/or teaching artists may be offered pre- or postexcursion as an extra or a standalone activity. Our workshops aim to build confidence and inspire by giving your students opportunities to explore, practise and adapt new skills and techniques and apply them to their arts practice inside and outside of the classroom.

SPECIFIC NEEDS AT OUR VENUES

AUSLAN INTERPRETED EVENTS

Select guided exhibition tours and Q&A sessions are presented with Australian Sign Language (Auslan) throughout the year, providing access for Deaf patrons and Auslan users.

VISUAL STORIES

Using both words and pictures, a visual story (also known as a social story) introduces students to what they can expect during their visit to the theatre. They briefly tell the story of your journey from the start to the end of the event in a factual way, offering positive options to help with fears and triggers such as loud noises.

RELAXED EVENTS

Relaxed events are designed to reduce anxiety and create a supportive atmosphere for patrons with autism spectrum conditions, intellectual impairment, learning disability and other sensory and communication needs. There is a relaxed attitude to theatre etiquette, such as noise and movement among the audience.

Modifications will differ depending on the event, but can include:

• The doors to the venue being left open to allow audience members to enter and exit as needed; and

• Noise and movement and light and sound effects being toned down or removed.

Where possible, a visual story and/or sensory guide is available for patrons to download from our website prior to a relaxed event.

SENSORY GUIDES

A sensory guide provides teachers and students with a breakdown of sensory triggers throughout the event and when to expect them. These may include audience participation and interaction, changes in lighting and sound or special effects such as haze.

OTHER REQUESTS

Upon request we may be able to provide accessible services other than those listed to help make your school groups visit more comfortable. Please let us know of any request you have on your booking form, and we will do our best to arrange it.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND PLACEMENT

Are you young and passionate about pursuing a career in the performing arts? Get a taste for the arts industry and gain key practical experience with The Joan’s Work Experience and Work Placement programs.

Both programs aim to foster the next generation of arts industry professionals by giving students a behind-the-scenes insight into the workings of an arts organisation. During their placement, students will have the opportunity to work alongside our team of experienced arts professionals from a range of different areas including creative, production and technical.

WORK EXPERIENCE is available for Year 10 students. Successful applicants complete a standard work week onsite during school term. This program gives students an introduction into the nature and workings of a professional arts environment, allowing them to link and implement classroom learning to real-life situations in the arts industry. Many students find Work Experience assists them in choosing their elective subjects for their Senior School years.

WORK PLACEMENT is available for Year 12, Vocational Education Training (VET) and Tertiary students. Hours are flexible and tailored to the individual student’s workplace suitability. This block placement enables the student to gain a more thorough understanding of The Joan’s inner workings and further extend their skills through exclusive opportunities. For instance, helping the team backstage prepare for a show.

These initiatives are a fantastic way to discover the practicalities of the workplace, attain valuable life skills, develop arts skills and deepen your love of the creative and performing arts.

Experiences will vary for students depending on which team they are working with and what is happening at The Joan while they are there.

HAMLET: PRINCE OF SKIDMARK

Don’t miss the maestros of children’s comedy, The Listies, as they head to The Joan for the first time these Winter School Holidays to bring you their multi award-winning, side-splitting ‘badaptation’ of Shakespeare’s classic play.

Cheeky, clever and utterly irreverent, this is the Bard as you never imagined possible! In true Listies style, the brilliant duo has pulled apart Hamlet and glued it back together with hilarious costumes, supersonic storytelling, gags, silliness and plenty of interactivity!

Guaranteed to captivate the young and the young at heart, Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark is a must-see introduction to the wonderful world of theatre and Shakespeare.

Exhibition Highlights

In 2023, we are excited to bring you a range of new exhibitions that feature work by contemporary Australian artists and makers at different stages of their careers, as well as locally and historically significant artworks with a strong connection to

our site at Emu Plains. Our program spans across a variety of mediums including, sculpture, installation, collage, painting and video, and covers a broad range of themes relevant to the visual arts and cross-curricular areas.

BRIDGET CURRIE: MESSAGE FROM THE MEADOW

Penrith Regional Gallery is thrilled to present South Australian artist Bridget Currie’s new landmark solo exhibition, Message from the Meadow.

Currie draws on her diverse art practice, incorporating sculpture, furniture, film and sound into an immersive installation that aims to physically ground the visitor in a meditative space.

In this exhibition, spoken texts, sound and moving image accompany sculptures and environments. In this way, Currie draws upon space, tactile sensation and sound (ASMR) to explore how artworks can trigger sensory affect and encourage a deeper engagement to place and the self. Message from the Meadow also incorporates Currie’s new film, soft insides.

This exhibition will give students an opportunity to immerse themselves in an exhibition of human and non-human forms, while they explore the world of art and meditation from the artists perspective.

This exhibition was made possible through Adelaide Contemporary Experimental’s inaugural Porter Street Commission Art Award, supporting new artwork by South Australian artists.

JEANNIE BAKER: DESERT JUNGLE

Join us for the latest exhibition of artworks by renowned children’s book author and artist, Jeannie Baker. Co-produced by Penrith Regional Gallery, this travelling exhibition has been scheduled to align with the publishing of Jeannie’s latest book, also titled Desert Jungle.

Jeannie’s vibrant and visually distinct works present a visual narrative that explores the complex biodiversity of the Sonoran Desert. Over one-third of the Australian landscape is classified as desert, and yet for most settler Australians, the desert remains a barren space. In this new story, Jeannie explores the Valley of the Cirios in Mexico, through the perspective of a young child and his grandfather.

In parts of the Valley, towering stands of Cardon Cactus – some of the largest cacti on Earth – and Elephant Trees, mix with Cirios and other unique desert plants as a ‘forest’, almost a desert jungle. These cacti and other plants form both subject and material for Jeannie, who incorporates clippings from plants in her intricate and stunning works.

During an historic moment, when the global community is grappling with the irreversible effects of climate change, Desert Jungle offers a moment of reflection and insight, to celebrate that which is unique, and cannot be lost.

The exhibition includes a drop-in maker space for all ages and is accompanied by a comprehensive learning resource for preschool and primary-aged students and educators.
