Bell Shakespeare’s
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM By William Shakespeare Directed by Peter Evans
Shakespeare’s classic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is reawakened in this breathless production brimming with magic, mirth and mayhem. Love is in the air in Athens – and it’s contagious. Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of enchanted futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia – and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander meet in a moonlit forest with plans to elope. Following hot on their heels is Demetrius, who in turn is pursued by a lovelorn Helena. But the young lovers are not alone in the forest. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of tradies have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. And, hidden from human eyes, a mischievous sprinkling of faeries are also in the forest that night. The three worlds collide in an explosion of comic confusion that throws the future of all the lovers into jeopardy.

BONUS OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES Bell Shakespeare’s REGIONAL ACCESS WORKSHOPS provide invaluable opportunities for students in regional areas to learn more about Shakespeare, live performance, and the production they are about to see, at no cost to your school. Before students see A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a teaching artist will guide students through a 75-minute workshop that includes an interactive synopsis of the play and specific directional and design concepts that are unique to this production. The JOHN BELL SCHOLARSHIP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students living in regional or remote areas who are interested in a career as a performer. Interested students may book a workshop audition. Students will spend 15 minutes where they will audition and work with a professional Bell Shakespeare artist, receiving feedback and direction. Each year, up to four students are selected from across Australia to come to Bell Shakespeare HQ in Sydney and spend a week training with the Company. A Midsummer Night’s Dream ONLINE RESOURCES can be found on Bell Shakespeare’s website, on the Shakespeare Hub. Production resources will be added throughout the year including set and costume designs, photo galleries and interviews.

HAROLD DAVID, DAVID PORTER, GREG SEMU, CRAIG WALSH AND MORE Digital photography has perhaps become the most ubiquitous form of artmaking, with the current estimate being that there are roughly 12 trillion images in circulation today. Photography shows us our present moment – the who, where, when and what – in painstaking detail. That the analogue photograph can survive for as long as it has, grants it an aura that provokes curiosity and wonder. Codes of Her Known Life presents key photographic works from the collection of Penrith Regional Gallery, each capturing important moments in the social history of Penrith. The artists turn their lens to the people around them to capture moments of community joy and familial pride.

DIANA BAKER SMITH: THIS PLACE WHERE THEY DWELL This Place Where They Dwell is a four-channel video installation exploring the politics and poetics of space through the work of the Australian Modernist artist, Margo Lewers. The work focuses on Lewers’ former home in Emu Plains, now the site of Penrith Regional Gallery. Lewers conceived the house as a threedimensional artwork, combining her sensibility as a painter, with her extensive knowledge of design and architecture. Filmed inside the house, This Place Where They Dwell captures dancer Lizzie Thomson in motion. As she moves between the four rooms, she responds to the architecture, particularly the movement of light through windows and doorways.
Term 2 DATES 11 May – 21 July PRICE Free, bookings essential CURRICULUM LINKS Creative Arts – Visual Arts and Dance, HSIE – History.
The four interconnected videos examine the site of the home as a place that changed from a private, intimate space, into a public one; from a site where Lewers lived, made art, raised children, mourned her husband, and died, and into an art gallery containing a unique record of Australia’s post-war Modernist art scene. NATALYA HUGHES: THE INTERIOR Natalya Hughes’ The Interior invites audiences into an exaggerated consultation room playfully furnished for psychoanalysis. Interested in the role of women and their historical absence from positions of power, the part-professional, part-domestic setting conjured by The Interior plays with gendered power dynamics between public and private space. The couches that dot the gallery take their lush contours from the shapes of the female body, and their detailed upholstery sees motifs of eyes, rats, and snakes from Freud’s patient case studies ripple over the space in fleshy tones. Audiences are invited to recline and be enveloped, soothed, and held by the furniture’s womanly forms while taking turns playing analyst and patient. Throughout this bodily encounter, The Interior hopes to create a space where the existence of women can be reimagined on different terms in the ‘post-Me Too’ world.
