A RETURN TO LIVE PERFORMANCE

Dear Friends,

In the 2021–2022 season, we celebrated the return to live performance, and for the first time, at the Lyric Opera House. Although it was not the season we had planned, our commitment to sharing beautiful stories on and off the stage endures now more than ever.

In December 2021, at the height of our Nutcracker production, the sudden surge in Covid-19 cases resulted in the cancellation of the remaining eight performances. For the safety of our artists and staff, we additionally postponed the February 2022 production of Yuri Possokhov’s Don Quixote to June of that year.

Spring performances continued as scheduled for John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men by choreographer Cathy Marston, and the Joffrey premiere of Serenade by dance pioneer George Balanchine. In addition, we returned to the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Edlis Neeson Theater for our annual presentation of Winning Works, a choreographic program recognizing emerging ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American) choreographers and their original works. As in the year prior, we continued the offerings of Winning Works virtually and in person, making them accessible to audiences around the globe.

Despite the season’s hiccups, we witnessed it in its entirety; the Of Mice and Men world premiere, the returning magic of The Nutcracker, and after two years of rescheduling, Possokhov’s Don Quixote.

Above all, we continued dancing through the support of our believers: our dedicated Company Artists, audiences, community partners, and donors, all for whom we are perpetually grateful. Thank you for putting Joffrey at the forefront of dance.

Sincerely,

WOMEN’S BOARD NUTCRACKER LUNCHEON

Nutcracker Luncheon

In the fall of 2021, The Joffrey Women’s Board proudly presented The Nutcracker Fall Luncheon — a virtual and in-person event that highlighted The Nutcracker’s impact on audiences and performers of all ages and abilities. Guests enjoyed a conversation moderated by Joffrey Rehearsal Director and former Company Artist Suzanne Lopez, with a panel of guests: Liv and Luella Nandra, Academy Students, José Pablo Castro Cuevas, Company Artist, and Trish Strong, Head of Children’s, Adult and Adaptive Programs. The conversation emphasized the Joffrey’s adaptive dance program “JAM” — Joffrey Abilities in Motion, and the students’ involvement in Wheeldon’s iconic production.

The Nutcracker Luncheon raised over $80,000 in net revenue.

Co-chaired by members of The Joffrey Ballet Women’s Board, Ellen Distelheim, Johanna Ferguson, Shana Guthman, Jessica Jecmen, and Melinda Lagrange, and attended by Chicago’s business and philanthropic leaders, it was an afternoon in celebration of Joffrey’s dedication to the life cycle of a dancer, and an intimate look at the magic of Christopher Wheeldon’s The Nutcracker.

The luncheon was professionally filmed and live-streamed for all who could not attend in person. The Joffrey’s annual acquisition campaign leveraged the film as an incentive to prospective donors who made a gift before December 31, 2021.

Innovation at Joffrey Academy, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet

In the fall of 2022, Joffrey Academy, the Official School of The Joffrey Ballet, celebrated the launch of the Contemporary Ballet Trainee Program, the first full-time contemporary ballet training program offered by a classical ballet company in the United States. The program was established under new leadership, with the appointment of Katlin Michael Bourgeois as the inaugural Head of the Contemporary Ballet Trainee Program and former Joffrey Company Artist Og˘ulcan Borova as the new Head of Studio Company and Ballet Trainees.

Bourgeois and Borova began their roles nearly one year after the Joffrey Academy of Dance opened its new studio space and training facilities at 1920 South Wabash Avenue as part of the “Joffrey for All” strategic growth plan. The first-of-its-kind program cultivates a versatile set of skills for future professionals in the field of professional dance, specifically related to contemporary ballet training, creating pathways toward professional opportunities. Students concentrate on the foundations of classical ballet and the defining characteristics of modern movement: improvisation and floor work — a necessary step forward in the Academy’s commitment to training the best and most versatile dancers in the world.

Celebrating 12 Years of Excellence

The Joffrey Academy, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet’s Winning Works choreographic competition, was created to recognize talented ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American) choreographers and provide a platform to showcase choreography at the forefront of dance, under the guidance of The Joffrey Ballet and the Joffrey Academy directors. This season’s choreographers were chosen from a diverse pool of applicants and received stipends to create original pieces for the Joffrey Studio Company and Joffrey Academy Trainees. For two weeks, each choreographer worked at the studios of Joffrey Tower to bring their works to life at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art at the Edlis Neeson Theater and through Joffrey’s digital presentations.

The 2021–2022 Winning Works program welcomed artists Audrey Ipapo Baran, Taylor Carrasco, Derick McKoy, and Joffrey Company Artist Edson Barbosa. WTTW Chicago described the 2022 program as “a true winner” and a “primary example of the Joffrey’s commitment to the new.”

After a year of virtual performances, this season’s iteration marked our return to the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Edlis Neeson Theater. As in previous years, we made Winning Works accessible to everyone, everywhere, by continuing to stream live performances digitally. The year marked the first of many to offer in-person and digital options for viewing, expanding a broader platform for Winning Works choreographers.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Joffrey JOY

Community Engagement uses the power of dance to positively impact students across Chicago. As schools continued to adjust to changing classroom environments, Community Engagement programs supported our Chicago Public Schools and arts partners with quality dance arts education, and will continue to support our schools, students, and teaching artists as we work collaboratively to meet the needs of those we service.

This year, Community Engagement (CE) impacted 1500 students in grades K-12 through in-school programming free for student participants. The CE programs focus on eliminating barriers to dance education for students, creating access and equity in traditionally inaccessible schools on the south and west sides of Chicago. Along with teaching the foundations of dance, these programs build and measure social and emotional learning progress for students.

Extension students participated in the Chicago Loop Alliance’s Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade

We returned to in-person programming after teaching dance education on the virtual platform for a year. CE witnessed massive interest from our CPS partners to return to in-person learning along with new partners requesting our programs.

With the COVID restrictions lifted, students were able to take advantage of performance opportunities across the city. Students from our After School Matters showcased their dance talents with an uplifting performance in the Dance in The Parks series where residents from the community enjoyed a performance celebrating the joy of dance.

Extension Pro I and II students participated in the Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade sponsored by the Chicago Loop Alliance. This event celebrated the “artist’s holiday” and featured over 90 cultural organizations and artists from all over the city. The one-mile parade began at State and Lake and ended at State and Van Buren with people across the city gathering along State Street to watch the parade.

Another exciting highlight of the year was the participation of our Strobel students in the Garfield Park Conservatory’s annual fundraiser, Fleurotica. This event spotlighted the unique talents of Chicago’s leading floral designers with garments made entirely from plants, flowers, and natural materials and our Exelon Strobel students were the featured dance entertainment.

Students from our Amundsen High School After School Matters program were invited to participate in the opening ceremony of the Art on theMART where First Lady Amy Eshleman and After School Matters CEO Mary Ellen Caron introduced the moving image artwork of The Nutcracker on the façade of the Merchandise Mart.

The Exelon Strobel students in partnership with the University of Illinois Oncology Department gave a performance at their Pediatric Thanksgiving Festival where volunteers from UI Health and the UIC College of Medicine honored the journeys of pediatric hematology and oncology patients and their families through song and dance.

Although we were unable to offer an in-person Nutcracker Student Matinee due to Covid restrictions, CE worked with Big Foot Media and Joffrey Company Artist Victoria Jaiani to create The Nutcracker Storytime Adventure. The 30-minute video featured Jaiani in character as Marie’s mother, narrating the story of The Nutcracker with footage from the production and never-before-seen animations. The Nutcracker Storytime Adventure was offered to Chicago Public Schools and arts partners. An estimated 38,610 students were able to experience the holiday magic.

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

Joffrey Ensemble in The Nutcracker. Photo by Todd Rosenberg.

Courtney C. Shea

Joffrey Board of Directors and Women’s Board member Courtney Shea is committed to lifting up and supporting the women around her, including at the Joffrey. Shea’s gift to commission the creation of Cathy Marston’s marvelous Of Mice and Men this season follows her support of Bliss! by Stephanie Martinez in 2019. Shea is passionate about furthering the careers of female choreographers and equity within the arts. With her generous gift to the Artistic Innovation Fund to create new works, Shea ensures the Joffrey’s legacy of artistic excellence will continue for years to come. A member of the Joffrey Board’s Audit & Risk, Finance, and Nominating & Governance committees, Shea draws on her extensive professional experience and expertise in municipal advisory and investment banking to secure the company’s financial health. The Joffrey is grateful for her remarkable generosity and extraordinary leadership.

Qi Holtzman

Joffrey Women’s Board Member Qi Holtzman joined the Joffrey Women’s Board in 2022 as a production sponsor for The Nutcracker and the Women’s Board Nutcracker Luncheon. Passionate about introducing new audiences to the Lyric Opera House, Holtzman successfully hosted several events surrounding the Joffrey’s performances, increasing engagement. Being a Women’s Board Member allows Holtzman to support her passion for Ballet, which began at the age of 11, studying dance in Liaoning, China. Holtzman is a dancer, choreographer, producer, and educator focusing on classical Chinese dance, Modern Dance, and Ballet at her Qi Zhang Dance Studio in La Jolla, CA, where she is Artistic Director. Throughout her career, she has led various master classes and lectures at the California Institute of the Arts, CSSSA, Beijing Dance Academy, and SIAS International University. The Joffrey is ecstatic to have Holtzman’s gracious support and advocacy as an essential member of the Women’s Board.

A season of hope, renewal, and joy, The Joffrey Ballet’s 2021–2022 season allowed us to come together again and share the magic of live performance, featuring highly anticipated remounts, company debuts, and a world premiere.

The season marked the Joffrey’s long-awaited return to the stage at our new home, the Lyric Opera House. We began the season with the annual mixed repertory program, Home: A Celebration, which comprised original works by choreographers Chanel DaSilva, Joffrey Rehearsal Director Nicolas Blanc, Joffrey Company Artist Yoshihisa Arai, and a beloved ballet classic choreographed by Joffrey co-founder Gerald Arpino.

Soon after, we celebrated the return of Christopher Wheeldon’s magical production of The Nutcracker followed by the Chicago premiere of Serenade by dance pioneer George Balanchine, and a world-premiere adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men by choreographer Cathy Marston, featuring an original composition by Academy Award®-nominated composer Thomas Newman. Closing the season, we remounted Yuri Possokhov’s familyfriendly, humorous interpretation of Don Quixote.
