I believe in the power of architecture, in its ability to passively yet profoundly influence all spheres of the human life. When dealing with such an entity, I believe one must be very careful in taking the design decisions. It can be detrimental if these decisions are based on assumptions, prejudices, ignorance or personal idiosyncrasies. Proper knowledge and information of all sciences involved is very crucial to take the right calls. The portfolio is a selected collection of some of my works done as a student of Architecturein Priyadarshini Institute of Architecture and Design Studies during the period of 2017-2021 Each of these projects reflects the kind of ideas, approach and method I have devised over the years. In each of these cases, I read several research papers, articles and books as a personal objective to gain better insight into the. factors involved in the projects before conceptualizing the designs insome cases, it helped me to find counterintuitive and radical concepts while other it just strengthen my thoughts. However,in all the cases I learnt something new, which I hope to continue in the years to come I Chetanaya langde student of, VII Semester B.Arch, Priyadarshini Instituteof Architecture and Design Studies ,hereby declare that all the works documented in this portfolio is original to the best of my knowledge.

CONCEPT BIOMIMICRY This design strategy echoes nature’s own logic Organisms evolve in response to the conditions around them; architecture should, as well PROCESS OVERVIEW DEFINE Clearly articulate the impact you want your design to have in the world (i.e. the challenge you want to solve) and the criteria and constraints that will determine success BIOLOGIZE Analyze the essential functions and context your design solution must address. Reframe them in biological terms, so that you can “ask nature” for advice. DISCOVER Look for natural models (organisms and ecosystems) that need to address the same functions and context as your design solution. Identify the strategies used that support their survival and success. ABSTRACT Carefully study the essential features or mechanisms that make the biological strategies successful. Restate them in non-biological terms, as “design strategies.” EMULATE Look for patterns and relationships among the strategies you found and hone in on the the key lessons that should inform your solution. Develop design concepts based on these elements. EVALUATE Assess the design concept(s) for how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the design challenge and fit into Earth’s systems. Consider technical and business model feasibility. Refine and revisit previous steps as needed to produce a viable solution..

irst sign of civilization came from a broken femur bone, that had healed meant he was not alone. For in those times if you couldn't fend for yourself; you were better dead, that's what margaret mead had said. Time, space and care was all that he needed, A feeling of community was then seeded. This is what architecture is to humans atleast what it is supposed to be, Needs can mould our buildings while nature can set it free.

What are humans if not social and civil ? Our intricate interdependency on each other has been the most motivating factor for our evolution. vNevertheless such complex phenomena couldn't have fabricated from mere settlements.

The entrance to the Departure Area is preceded by 65M x 32M M long foyer. The spot booking counters are bifurcated into 4 sections, each one dedicated to a particular destination spectra. Observing the magnitude of crowd experienced by each travel destination, 4 Spot booking counters for Maharashtra, 2 for Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh each are provided. The placement of these counters is designed in a meandering fashion to avoid concentrated crowd pockets. The centre of the Spot Booking Counters houses the enquiry centre, meticlously placed to avoid confusion in user movement. The partition elements used are mainly low lying landscape patches which create a seamless transition of the passengers throughout their movement. Rather than keeping the bifurcation pattern mechanical, the flow of the user is kept very organic to minimize the feeling of “obstruction”.

WAITING AND DEPARTURE

SECTION The waiting area is bifurcated into 5 parts, each one dedicated to a specific travel destination with first two for Maharashtra passengers and one each for other. Total two washrooms are provided each one catering to two travel destinations. These sectors are separated by flowing water streams. These water streams are provided to enhance the microclimate of the spaces by a simple mechanism of evaporation which cools the air around. At proper intervals, waiting spaces are given in the form of ‘Chabutra’. The trees concentrated in these ‘chabutras’ extend above the roof through punctures. Creating a beautiful ambience taking assistance from the stack effect created. The design in a post pandemic world caters to these stakeholders in a unique way. The major stakeholders entertained by the site are: bus terminus staff (administrative and clerical) Passengers Visitors (drop & go and Pick up) The Bus Terminus staff Light has to be shed upon the economic requirements post experiences a stay time of pandemic. Reviving the economy by providing appropriate 8 hours at a stretch. A employment opportunities and not taking it away from the comfortable and safe stakeholders (general staff, landscape maintenance etc.) environment for them is a must. The design is such that restricts the contact of staff with the passengers.

ARRIVAL AND SKYWALK

SECTION

The movement of the buses through the second lane follows a path where the bus travels from : entrance to arrival through ascent followed by descent in level towards the workshop area further leading towards the departure. The skywalk extends from the Arrival Section progressing towards two spaces of descent: The Foyer (Spot booking counters) and the Pick up lane. The descent towards the pick up lane is bifurcated into stairs and ramp. Transition space provided between the arrival deck and progressive movement areas is shaded with ‘jali’ creating a beautiful interplay of light and shadow. The exit at the pick up lane is abutting the vehicle circulation path facilitating ‘pick up & go’ provisions for the travellers. The roof to the skywalk is a pergola of bamboo and PTFE with successively progressing members. The roof to the arrival section is a vault roof made of the same materials creating a high ceiling. This height is beneficial in keeping the area cool due to the interplay of rising and settling of hot and cold air respectively.

THE DETAILS

CHABUTRA : The seating provided in the waiting area is inspired from the traditional outdoor seating style called ‘chabutra’. The undulations create dedicated spaces to accommodate one user in each trough. This type of seating specifically aids in maintaining the order of a public space as well as enriching the micro climate and user experience.

LANDSCAPE & BIOPHILIC: Landscape throughout the site is planned in a way that it compliments the climate of the site. The trees in the waiting area are such that they grow during the summers, masking the roof from the harsh summer heat whereas shed their leaves during winters welcoming the comfortable winter heat. In the south west part of the site, such trees are provided which have an extremely dense foliage throughout the year creating an obstruction to the extreme heat received from the S-W side.

RESTROOMS:

PERCEPTION OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN Natural Colors: The structure is adorned with materials such as exposed brick walls, terracotta jalis & cuddapah flooring. All of these materials impart a natural, raw aesthetic which in turn connects the users with a natural identity. Simulations of Natural Light and Air: The use of jalis and perforations creates an interesting play of light and shadow in the semi open space. Through the roof perforations provided in the waiting area simulates air flow throughout the spaces by the stack effect. Natural Geometries: As seen in the ramps and movement created, no sharp angles or turns are seen, this facilitates a free flowing movement throughout the site. Also, the significance of the hexagonal shape holds a huge importance in the site. It is said to be the most common and recurring shape in nature as it suffices the spatial use in the best way possible. This shape has been adapted in the design through the columns, spot booking counters and food stalls.

It is planned in the form of two concentric squares in which the inner space houses a landscaped area with a stream of water flowing through it. The ventilators are provided on the inner walls opening towards the landscaped area. This suffices the adsorption of impurities in air by the landscaping. The roof of the structure tapers inside towards the inverted ridge facilitating the collection of rainwater.

FOOD STALLS: The food stalls provided mimic the shape of the ticket counters. The inner hexagonal envelope houses the staff on duty whereas the outer area is for the passengers. The edges of the outer hexagon support the seating provided for the passengers and is designed in a way such that every user has their own dedicated space. The access to the food stalls is only from one side such that only passengers from the waiting area can access the space. S.S.A.362

BRIEF INTERPRETATION

THE NEED FOR HOUSING

The Brief depicts the need for housing for the Migrants. The total number of internal migrants in India, as per the 2011 census, is 45.36 crore or 37% of the country’s population. These vulnarable section of People have to face deplorable living conditions. Vast majority of the urban dwellers in India are informally employed and engaged in activities such as manufacturing in small family units, trading in small shops or on streets, domestic workforce, manual laborers toA transport workers. The issue faced by this major part of Indian population are manifold, and tragically overlooked.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Design Principle: Plan for the ordinary This idea targets the artifacts of everyday life: housing, storage, community layouts Design Principle: Consider the system Because the idea targets the organization of everyday artifacts, we must work with the traditional community actors and institutions: neighborhood organizations, municipal governments, etc. build simple artifacts that are, when possible, modular and mobile. Design Principle: Maximize limited resources By utilizing packing theory to design artifacts and layouts, the use of limited resources like space and building materials is optimized. Design Principle: Design for gender equality NEED INPUT HERE :) Design Principle: Design with, not for We'll bring the 'packing problem' principles and facilitate the process, but local residents will give input at every step and make the decisions
