N

ias Island is a beautiful island located in a chain of island parallel to the west coast of Sumatera and part of North Sumatera province. In this province has archipelago consists of 131 islands and Nias Island is the biggest of them. On November 2011, I had the opportunity to visit Nias Island. It was a prize from a photo contest, a very rare prize and I was very happy that I won that trip. I departed from Denpasar in the morning in the first day then joined the committee who held the contest in Jakarta. Together, we flew to Polonia Airport, Medan, North Sumatera. Arriving in Medan, we had to take a flight again to Binaka Airport, a small airport in Gunung Sitoli that located in Nias Island. After landing at Binaka Airport, we were picked up by several local guides who will accompany us in Nias Island for 4 days. Our first destination was Nias Heritage Museum. In this museum there were many arts and cultural heritage of Nias. There were some megaliths stone sculptures supposedly hundreds of years old. Taking photographs inside the museum was prohibited, I felt a little disappointed but we had to respect the local rules and regulations. After looking around and knowing the history in Nias Heritage Museum, we were headed to the first motel called Miga Beach Inn, still located in Gunung Sitoli area. In the second day we were going to the next destination

called Bawomataluo Village to see War Dance and Hombo Batu tradition. Bawomataluo which means Hill of the Sun located in District Fanayama, South Nias. We then taken to meet the village elder and the leader in the War Dance. He was wearing Nias traditional costume for this tradition. War Dance presented by hundreds of men dressed as warrior. They were cheering and dancing at the village yard. There were also some women who wore traditional dress to participate in the War Dance. The dance was so epic. After the War Dance, they prepared Hombo Batu (The Stone Jump). Hombo Batu was a tradition that was carried out by a young men in Nias to show that they were appropriate considered to be adult and mature physically. According to the local history, this tradition was a way to test the mental and physical of men in Nias. In the past, before the men permitted to join the war, they must take this Hombo Batu as a test. Besides the War Dance and Hombo Batu, they also presented the Feta Batu, a musical arragement made by strucking the rock with a wooden sticks to create a rhythm. After presented with local tradition and art performances, the village elder hosted us for a lunch at hi house. At the table presented traditional Nias food called Babae like porridge made from mashed peanuts and coconut served with rice cooked in a clay oven, and

it was tasted indescribable delicious. After having lunch, we walk around the village. In Nias Island there were Sorake Beach which famous for its surfing spots. There were beautiful beachside lodge with light breeze, plus great seafood for dinner. In the third day the journey continued to the Hiliamaetaniha village located in South Nias. Along the way, there were something that caught my attention, there were grave almost every yard or next to people’s houses here, our local guide mentioned, the purpose is prevent it from the grave thieves. Reached the Hiliamaetaniha, we went around and then went to Tetegewo Megalith Site. This megalith site had been preserved by the local people for many years, to get to the site we had to pass through the bushes and jungle so need a local guide to lead us to the right way. That was a great tour that I got in Nias, a short trip but really precious to witness the uniqueness of culture and heritage of this island.

DERAWAN ISLANDS

bunch of people gathered at the end of the dock, seemed to welcome the arrival of our three hours waves shaken trip from Tarakan. But I was wrong, they are actually observing a pair of turtle eating a banana leaf on the edge of the dock. Previously I have always dreamed of snorkeling with turtles at sea and I always missed it on my previous visits to Gili Trawangan, Karimun Java, and other destinations. Now in front of me a pair of turtle shell with a diameter of approximately 1 meter swim under the dock quietly without human disturbed about. The next minute I was swimming with them.

Derawan Island is the main and the most crowded island of Derawan the archipelago, East Kalimantan. Facilities on the island is the most complete than the other islands. The island also had become one venue for the Indonesia’s National Sports Week. In addition to a complete line of simple accommodation with its own dock, Derawan Island has many restaurants. One of the culinary not miss is the squid satay with peanut sauce sprinkled. Besides turtles that seemed never absent from dock where I stay, just by snorkeling around the island it is very easy to find clownfish, tigerfish or even small stingrays. Ow yeah, I really enjoy jumping into the clear water of the dock into the clear blue sea. Splaassshh!

Ayam Taliwang Lombok’s delicacy

A

t first glance, Taliwang Chicken looks almost like the common grilled or fried chicken, simply covered with a spicy relish. Only after tasting it, we can discern the difference. The meat is well done and very soft in texture. Both hot and sweet, it has the aroma of terasi (fermented shrimp paste), which prompts us to savor every mouthful. Taliwang Chicken is even more appetizing when accompanied with local side dishes such as plecing (water spinach with tomatochili relish) and beberuk (eggplant in chili sauce) also with a nice warm rice. Ayam Taliwang can now be found in nearly all eateries in Mataram and even in some big cities all over Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar, Bali. A tour of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, will not be complete without tasting the local Taliwang Chicken -- Ayam Taliwang -- to explore the mystery of its flavor.

三 保 洞 GEDUNG B A T U a legacy of the great admiral 22

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

I

n the early 15th century when Ming dynasty ruled China, The Yongle Emperor sponsored seven expeditions of unprecedented naval fleet to impress other nations across the Indian Ocean and control trade in the region. The great expedition, however, was commanded by Zheng He, a Muslim eunuch who had proven his allegiance to the new emperor. On his expeditions, Admiral Zheng He supplied the vessels with various goods such as gold, silver, porcelain and silk to be dispensed along the way. In return he received some exotic presents such as a giraffe, zebras, ostriches, camels and ivory from the Swahili in East Africa. Generally all the expeditions commanded by Zheng He were conducted peacefully since diplomacy was his preferred way to interact with other nations. However he occasionally used the military power to suppress pirates who had long plagued the Chinese and Southeast Asian waters. His successful effort to crush piracy in the region had positively raised his image among regional kingdoms. Once upon a time when Zheng He’s fleet cruised around the northern coast of Java, some of the crews fell sick. Then the admiral commanded his fleet to anchor at a place which is now part of modern-day Semarang. At this particular place, apart from curing his crews by using herbs gathered in the area, he found a small cave inside a rock and did his prayer there. Purportedly, the admiral’s

23

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

arrival to Java, among other things, had helped spread Islam to the local people. In the early 18th century, long after Zheng He’s visit to Semarang, a temple was constructed at the site of the cave. The temple was then aptly named Gedung Batu (Stone Building) after the cave. Having been owned by several different people and withstood turbulent times during Japanese occupation, political upheavals and economic recession, the temple compound underwent a major renovation in the 2000s which coincides with the commemoration of 600 years of Zheng He’s visit to Semarang. Currently, Gedung Batu is located within a larger compound called Sam Poo Kong which houses several temples, with Gedung Batu as the largest one. The entire compound’s architecture combines Chinese and Javanese traditional features painted in the auspicious bright red and ubiquitously adorned with statues from Chinese mythology. Sitting next to the main temple, two smaller temples which were built years after the construction of Gedung Batu emanate distinctive fragrance of burned incense sticks. The one which flanks the main

temple is called Juru Mudi temple after the tomb of Wang Jinghong, one of Zheng He’s trusted deputies in his expeditions across the oceans. Another temple in the compound is dedicated for the sacred anchor which used to be a part of Zheng He’s fleet, while the other smaller temple houses the weapons of Zheng He. Venerated by both Muslims and Buddhists, Chinese and Javanese, Zheng He and Sam Poo Kong Temple have played a major role in the history of the people of Semarang. Today the entire compound is now one of the most visited places in this beloved hometown of mine.

ieng is one of the high land plain tourist spots in central Java. One thing that makes this place unique from the other places is that this place is so sloppy and very steep, but it is planted by different kind of trees and vegetables. Since a long time this place which is located in Wonosobo regency, is famous for its heterogenic trees and vegetables. Despite of its heterogenic trees and vegetables it is also famous for its weather which is fresh in the morning and we can’t tell exactly when the clouds will be coming that can arouse a mystical atmosphere. The exotic view of this place is no longer doubtful because there are a lot of landscape objects to be visit, like Telaga Warna is one of the best places to visit by the tourist. Over here we can see there are 3 kinds of lake that have different colors which are blue, green, and brown. Further more there are other lake like Merdada Lake, Sumurup Lake and Pengilan Lake. Beside of its beautiful scenery and colorful lake, we can also visit the historical architecture object. Here we can see the site of

the historical ruins of Hindustan temple. This temple was built in the same era as the build of Borobudur temple; it was around the 8th century. It was the center of Hindustan religion development in Central Java. The Archaeologies believed that the Hindustan community in this place was the beginning of Syailendra dynasty. They also the one tha t build the monumental temple. Beside the temple, we can find the ruins of a kingdom that existed in the past. One thing that makes the temples in this area special is that they were named after the 5 famous figures from the Javanese puppets. The temple is divided into 4 groups, Featuring 10 temples ; Dwarawati, Setyaki, Ontorejo, Petruk, Nala Gareng, Nakula Sadewa, Arjuna Semar, Sembodo, Puntha Dewa and Srikandi. Temple complex is built on 2.000 meter above sea level. Only to be discovered in 1800. The volcanoes on this plateau are still active, and produce hot sulfur and other toxins. If you are interested in visiting some of these

volcanoes, despite its amazing scenery, be aware that it could be dangerous to visit, so it is better that you ask the local people to guide you. One of the famous volcanos is Candradimuka, this is where the famous Javanese puppet “Gatot Kaca was reborn. The way to get to this place is very steep and winding. There is only one entrance access to get to this place, which is from Wonosobo. If you come from direction Yogyakarta, it is better that from Magelang you go directly to Wonosobo. SEMPU ISLAND THE NATURAL SAVE HAVEN

F

orget about modern convenience when you are about to enter this marvelous conservation area with its beautiful hidden Lagoon in East Java. A secluded island of the shore of Java, known as the Sempu Island. Located in southern coast of Malang regency. About 180 kilometers from the capital city of East Java, Surabaya or just 80 KM from Malang city. This 877 hectare lush tropical island is a natural reserve run by the government. The island status had been established since 1928 by the Dutch colonial government. The main attraction to this small yet wonderful island is the Segara Anakan Lagoon, which located about 2.5 Km south of the Island. Hidden far from the lush tropical jungle, the 4 hectare Lagoon is a truly an amazing place to be. It is whrw the white sandy beach met with the calm blue ocean water, separated from the ocean because it was surrounded by rocks. Its calm water makes it a perfect place

to swim and enjoy the sea, added with the quietness nuance making Segara Anakan Lagoon a perfect romantic place. To those who seek this beautiful lagoon, a trip to Sempu itself is a great adventure. It begin with a sail trip crossing the channel from Sendang Biru Beach to Teluk Semut in Sempu Island. From here, the trip continues with a two hour trekking through the dense lush jungle and steeps to reach the lagoon. Even though the trek was quite challenging, but the beautiful sight of the lagoon and its surrounding is worth all the effort. As a Natural reserve, Sempu Island had a various ecosystems from coastal forest, mangrove forest, and tropical rain forest that dominated most the part of the island. Some exotic vegetation that can be found in the island such as the tropical almond (Terminalia catappa), Tahitian screwpine (Pandanus tectorius) and much more. Interestingly, the name Sempu itself is taken from one of the plant

that can be found in the island, but it hard to find one these days. Sempu Island is also a home to several wildlife such as the Javanese Monkey (Tracypithecus auratus), deer, boar and much more. Such as some giant lizard, snakes and a few variant of Birds looking for sanctuary in the island. Something to remember, as mention earlier Sempu island is basically is a Natural reserve under the protection of the government, a legal permit is required before entering the island. An office of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation in the region can be found at the Sendang Biru Beach, the crossing point to Sempu Island. Barong Dance

S

ince the dawn of mankind on Earth the planet has changed so dramatically, caused both by Mother Nature’s relentless energy to twist, turn and flip the world’s tectonic plates, volcanoes, skies and oceans, and humans’ insatiable demand for resources. So often we hear that the only constant thing in the world is change, therefore those who survive are the ones who are able to change and adapt to new challenges. However another constant thing in life seems to often be overlooked by most of us: the battle between good and evil. History proves how the two eternal forces always balance each other out, like yin and yang. Germany is not always known for its enviable advancement in technology, supported by sound and efficient economy, but many remembers it as a country where one of the world’s greatest evils had painted a very dark chapter in history. Iraq, on the other hand, was not always a perilous and unstable land. At the time when Europe was engulfed in inquisitions, Baghdad produced progressivethinking scholars who introduced new thoughts to the world like algebra and perfected ancient wisdom and sciences which would later provide a strong foundation for Renaissance movements in Europe. There is no guarantee that things would remain at one side forever. There is no guarantee that a good man would always be good, and a bad man would remain so for the rest of his life. The same philosophy had inspired the Balinese to create a dance

richly loaded with symbolism of the eternal battle between good and evil: the Barong dance. The mythical beast – often takes shape of a lion among other less-known forms of a tiger, a boar and a dragon – is considered a protective spirit of the island, a tradition dating back from the pre-Hindu period. A Barong is usually decorated with gilded leaves, fragments of small mirrors and voluminous dried ijuk (palm fibre) to create a formidable figure representing virtue. On the other hand Rangda is attributed to evil spirits, instilling fear and inciting chaos among Balinese with her menacing appearance – a demonic figure with sharp nails and a long unfurled tongue. Her origin can be traced back to the time when King Udayana from the House of Warmadewa ruled Bali in the 10th century. During his rule, the Balinese king married a Javanese princess, Gunapriyadharmapatni, from the Medang Kingdom – the same kingdom which left magnificent 9th century temples spread across Java as its legacies. The marriage instigated suspicions from the Balinese royal court upon their foreign consort queen’s ambition to include Bali in the realm of the Javanese kingdom. Gunapriyadharmapatni, later known as Mahendradatta, introduced the worship of Durga, a goddess in Shaktism school of Hinduism often associated with death, in her new land. King Udayana himself later condemned his wife for practicing black magic and banished her from his kingdom. Enraged, humiliated and disappointed, Mahendradatta then summoned all the evil spirits on the island to avenge her and kill everyone in the kingdom. Rangda, Old Javanese for widow, since then has always been associated with evil. The Barong dance portrays the battle between Barong and Rangda including sequences where the demon queen relentlessly attempts to turn people away from virtue. The finale shows Balinese men with their keris – a traditional dagger – attempting to defeat Rangda, only to meet their own demise for the evil queen was much too powerful. Barong eventually resurrects them and expels Rangda, forcing her to flee and move to the forests on the island. Peace returns to the village, but the mighty Barong does not kill the demon queen, epitomizing a reality in the world where there will always be virtue and evil, constantly battling each other.

Bali’s hidden beauty

TEGENUNGAN

WATERFALL A

few sights in Bali could be listed as A-must go sight, such as the Kuta Beach, Tanah Lot & Uluwatu temple, and list could go on and on. But I was planning to seek lesser known sights, a rising star on its way to Bali tourism sights Stardom. So set my choice the Tegenungan waterfall. Early in the morning I started to drive and heads to Kemenuhan village in Gianyar, just about an hour drive from kuta. It is where the Tegenungan waterfall is located and as I drive I realize that I was also slowly moving from the luxurious crowed southern Bali to a more traditional peaceful part of Bali in up north, along the roadside unlike Kuta with its towering buildings, here traditional Balinese houses still lining up giving you a true feeling of Balinese peaceful way of life. As I arrive at the entrance, It was nothing special. There are no gigantic entrance gate, no huge permanent ticket counter. Just a small welcome sign and a local official sitting under shady tree to collect the entrance fee. Everything is still simple, not over commercialize. A good sign that I was right about the sight is still under the radar. I can hear fainting sound of the roaring waterfall, as it was greeting every visitors. Several small stall can be found near the entrance with a resting area facing the waterfall, from there visitors can see the entire landscape view of the Tegenungan Waterfall and its rocky river with the breathtaking lush green natural surroundings. With the relaxing sound of waterfall, fresh breeze and a view like this you can actually sits here all day long just staring at this beautiful creation of mother nature.

After a quick break, I then heads down to the waterfall through the stairs. On the way down you can see a few seller selling fresh fruits. A bite of fresh orange in a natural surroundings, really makes my day. A small temple can be found near the bottom with a natural bathing area located close to it with fresh water showers. As I reach the bottom the trembling sound of the waterfall is pushing me to get there as soon as possible as walk my way through the shallow rocky river. As I reach the waterfall I was stunned, I is gorgeous. The Tegenungan Waterfall is not really that tall, only approximately 15 meters high, so you can actually jump right into a pond at the bottom of the waterfall and I actually saw a couple of foreign visitors takes a jump, they really had a great time. It was very tempting to try, to fell the freshness of Tegenungan waterfall up close and personal. After refreshing myself with a splash of clear water from the river, I then make my way up back to the resting area near the stall. With a fresh young coconut in my hand, I sat down again and relax while enjoying the beauty of Bali’s hidden waterfall, the beautiful Tegenungan Waterfall.

G N I V I D ERIENCE EXP I N BALI

Bali is mostly known as the Island of Gods, as the majority of its inhabitants are of Hindu religion. The whole island is covered with more than 6000 temples of all size, shape and importance. What you might not know is that Bali is part of the so called Coral Triangle, an area that is considered top priority for marine conservation for its unique marine biodiversity. Scuba diving and snorkeling are definitely a must on your vacation. Here is a list of what you should not miss.

5

Night Diving

You don’t have to be a super experienced diver to be able to join a night diving trip. However mastering your buoyancy and not being afraid of the dark are two important prerequisites, even though you will have a dive torch and be able to see where you’re heading. Many amazing critters come out at night, octopuses, cuttlefish, crabs to mention a few. Night dives are great to observe the endless variety of macro life, but stingrays and small sharks might also pop by. Padangbai dive sites and Tulamben offer wonderful night dive experiences.

Wreck Diving The 120m long and for more than 50 years sunken wreck of the USAT Liberty Ship is regularly featured in various “best dive sites of the world lists. The cargo ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the World War II and then beached in Tulamben, until the eruption of Agung volcano pushed the wreck into the sea where it lies today. It is an amazing diving and snorkeling location suitable for all levels of experience and offering a nice variety of macro and marine species to observe. The greatness and stillness of the wreck will amaze you and is definitely worth experiencing.

MACRO DIVES

Bali dive sites are full of all sorts of tiny critters of all shapes and colors. Underwater photographers come from all over the world in hope of getting the best shot of the tiniest of critters. There are several great macro dive locations around a small harbor town of Padangbai, located on the central East coast of Bali. 43

Mola Mola

If you are a passionate scuba diver, it is quite possible that spotting a Mola Mola is already on your diving wish-list. These peculiar giants (3-4m large) usually live too deep (below50m) for the divers to encounter them. Luckily, there is a Mola season in Bali! Every year between August and October they swim up to shallower depths where they let the small fish to clean them. While being cleaned, Molas fall into a kind of idle state where they just relax and enjoy the treat. This is actually the best chance for the divers to take a closer look. Note that an advanced diving license is recommended for Mola Mola dives.

Diving with Manta rays

Manta rays can be seen in Bali all year round and they definitely are one of the main attractions. No surprise there. Mantas are beyond magical and meeting them face to face will leave you breathless. Moreover you don’t have to be a diver to enjoy their presence. Snorkeling is also a great way of observing them however it is not an activity recommended for weak swimmers or small children as the surface can get rather wavy at times. A

n old copy of the Indonesia Handbook, from 1991 has this description in it “The coral and snorkeling at this popular beach area, 6km north of Ampenan, is fantastic-4 straight kms of pure white sand, blue-green sea, and no crowds.” That is the words that describe what Senggigi is back in the old days. Now two decades later, it seems like the three little islands on the off the northwest coast of Lombok is getting more spotlight. But Senggigi still got its own charm. Senggigi can be considered as the center of tourism in Lombok Island. It is about 20 minutes north of the outskirts of the island’s capital Mataram and about 55 km southeast of the new Lombok International Airport in Praya or about 2 hours drive to reach Senggigi. If you choose to travel by plane to Lombok, there are various ways to get to Senggigi. You could choose to use either the airport taxi, the airport bus, local transport (The Bemo) or you could easily book for a pick up by a local travel agency. Senggigi was known as the most developed part of Lombok, as far as tourism is concerned, especially during the late 1990s when Lombok was hyped as the next Bali. You can find budget, midrange and luxury accommodation, a selection of nightlife activities, sweeping bays, even forest hiking activities. Senggigi is a great place to use as a home base for exploring Lombok. The whole area is formed by several adjacent yet subtly different areas all lying along the same 2 lane 10 km span of coastal road, with

49

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

its beautiful west facing beaches, this is may be Senggigi’s raison d’etre. This 10 KM beach provides a clean beach breeze and crashing waves are so seducing. A pathway has recently been built around the peninsular and it can be a pleasant promenade especially during the sunsets. Here in in Senggigi the sun setting with a perfect composition, don’t miss the comeliness of the sun by just sitting on the beach with a drink on your hand and enjoying the afternoon at Senggigi beach. The setting blood-red sun sinks into the surf next to the giant triangular cone of Bali’s Mount Agung, truly a view to remember. Senggigi is also known of its calm waves, which allow tourists to enjoy the underwater beauty by snorkeling in its clean water with an unforgettable the coral reef and marine life. Another thing to see around Senggigi is the Pura Batu Bolong, 2 km south of Senggigi. Small Hindu temple located in a scenic spot at a small headland overlooking Senggigi beach, named after a rock (batu)

50

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

with a hole (bolong). At the tip of the headland is an empty chair representing Brahma, the god of creation. This is also known as a perfect place to see the sunsets. Lombok’s tourism sector has had a difficult past decade and tourism activity in Senggigi went through a very subdued period with many developments halted and businesses closed. Recently things have been starting to improve again, with new villas and hotels going up and new shops and tourism ventures opening. It is now becoming increasingly popular with visitors seeking out the stunning scenery and unique culture and flavors of Lombok in Senggigi; the gateway of Lombok. Satonda island SUMBAWA’S

LITTLE paradise

W

e are approaching this tiny island at 06.00 in the morning. I can see a beautiful sunrise at the edge of the island. Waiting for a while then a small boat took us ashore to the island. A wooden gate with sign “Welcome to Satonda” greets us. There are two small neglected building in the side of the gate. Entering the gate, a small path leads us to the center of Satonda Island. After less than 5 minutes walking, we can see a huge lake with green color water. It’s so beautiful. Satonda island is an uninhabited island offshore of Sumbawa, a tiny island with width 4.8km and located at Nangamiru village. It is a famous island among the international scientists for its salty lake in the middle of the island. It is a beautiful natural wonder. The lake is 0.8 km in width and the water inside the lake has tide which naturally following the high and low tide of the sea on its surrounding. Basically, Satonda is a volcano which rising out of the sea from the 2.000 BC. And the lake inside is the caldera of the mount Satonda. In 1815 when the Mt.Tambora which located in Dompu erupted, as the largest and most devastating eruption in human history, the eruption delivers huge waves which finally fill up the lake with salt water. The caldera now is a beautiful salt water lake; with lots of big trees grow surrounding. You will also see a lot of mysterious hanging stones on the tree branches. The local believe these trees as the trees of hope. By finding stone or coral nearby, hang it on the highest point and make a wish, and if the stone is not falling into the lake, your wishes may come true. You may believe it or not, but these stones has beautifully decorate the lakeside. One thing that a little bothers is the heat inside the lake area. The

52

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

cone-shapedhills surrounding the lake has blocked off all breezes. But a swim in the lake will freshen things up. Other things we can do other than swim on the lake is hiking following the step to the top of Satonda Island, discover the stunning beauty of the lake which looks like bottle shape in its reflection on the lake surface. On the way down, you will see a lot of big trees. It is home to enormous fruit bats and various birds that inhabited the island. After an hour exploring the island, it is time for snorkeling on the beach. We were a little bit disappointed seeing some damaged coral. It caused of irresponsible fishermen who used bomb to catch fish, but there are stilla few good spots with lots of beautiful coral, beautiful starfish, and colorful fishes. Satonda which has become a National Park in 1999 is a lovely little island with quite beach and stunning lake view, a great place to escape and enjoy the natural beauty of the East. It is not easy to get to the island, especially when you travel through the mainland, we chose to get on board of one the travel company regular cruise to Komodo Island with a stop at Satonda Island. It all paid off with the unforgettable scenery of Satonda Island. Selamat jalan - jalan. Dewi Supartini ;a travel enthusiast, had been traveling since child with her family. RIUNG THE 17 ISLAND

NATURAL MARINE PARK

54

thejourneymagz.com January / February 2017

A

cold and quite dawn, the town of Ende is still asleep, a man is already riding on a back of motorcycle taxi (localy known as Ojek) struggling sleepy and cold. I am that ostentatious adventurer, I have to pierce through this chilly morning, because if I’m late I will have to wait until the next morning to enjoy the beauty of Riung’s 17 island marine parks. The motorcycle taxi drove through the town; I could only withstand the weight of my overweight carrier and a camera bag on my lap. My destination is Ndao terminal; it is from this terminal the buses that go around cities in Flores leaves. I was amazed by the view along the way, on my left side is a cliff with sea at the bottom, while on the right side is a wall of steep cliffs. Upon arrival in Ende, I was welcomed by a group of children going to school. What interesting is the vehicle they used, not a school bus but a pick-up truck?! It is the strong will to study that moved me. The travel to Mbay is really challenging due to the heavily damaged road and the long winding road. The good news is that there are renovations going on in several spots. Hopefully with better transportation facilities, the economy will get a good impact. Before entering the Mbay city our eyes were spoiled by asthonising views of green hills and savanna stretch as far as eye can see, as if a beautiful fine silk carpet. It is an undoubtful beautiful natural painting. I was so busy taking pictures, seeing such a beautiful scenery all I can think of is being grateful to have opportunities to view all of this beauty. After passing the beautiful mountain I eventualy fell a sleep next to the diver, as if I just slept he wake me up and the Bemo has stoped. From the place were the Bemo stop the amazing view of Riung’s 17 islands marine park is visible Upon arrival in Riung, the Bemo took me to Nirvana bungalow. There are only a few accommodations around Riung. One of it has become a favorite for foreign visitiors is the Nirvana Bungalow. Run by a friendly young man named Mr Rustam. It is a very simple place, with walls made of bamboo webbing. There are no luxurious facilities in the room, only a bed and mosquito netting, complete with inside bathroom. All seems to blend in with nature. After finishing a cup of Flores coffee as their welcome drinks in my bungalow, I hurried to prepare stuff to get into the sea. On the harbor we are waited by the captain who will take us traveling around the islands. He then suggests us to make a stop at Kalong Island (The Bat Island) first, and then do snorkeling in Tiga Island and visit Rutong Island to make pictures. That is how the trip used to. On the way to Kalong Island I was amazed by the beauty stretch in front of me. Ocean spread with clear water, while in the distance beautiful hills complete this natural masterpiece.

Upon arrival in Kalong Island I was greet by awesome phenomenon, thousands of bats hanging on the mangrove branches. Satisfied by this amazing view of Kalong Island, we continue our trip to Tiga Island, the best spot for snorkeling. But my visit here is missing timed, the short tide troubling us while snorkeling due to the short visibility under the water. This island itself is interesting to be explored, but I have to hurry back due to the wheater. The view of the mainland in Riung the dark rainy cloud is seen. We didn’t wait long to set sail to the next destination, the Rutong island. Almost every angle in the island is beautiful to be explored through the lens of my camera. The sloping white sandy beach with its crystal clear water has its own charm. A few gazebos placed along the beach looks a bit unmaintained. But it’s comfortable to be seated while enjoying the beautiful scenery. All seems to be so beautiful, little hills behind me seems to call me to climb on to it. But the heat makes me cancelling the plan. Rutong Island is a perfect place to swim and play in its nice beach. We then head back to Riung harbor to enjoy the sunset from there. I intend to end this beautiful day with sunset view. Riung Marine Park is so beautiful, but sadly it was not well maintained. We even couldn’t find dive operator around the town. What is available is just snorkeling equipment rental. Beside that, it is very hard to get transportation to this town. If only the local government pays more attention to this place it could be much better. Later that night it didn’t took long before I feel a sleep with memories of amazing and peaceful Riung. log on to www.lostpacker.com for more interesting stories from Sutiknyo Theo.

Bending down a bit when passing a group of older people is considered polite. 5. In Indonesia, when you address some one, it would considered more polite if you use these specific terms before mentioning the name : Bapak (Pak) for Mr, Ibu (Bu) for Mrs, Mas for young man, and Mbak for Miss/ young woman. 6. Shoes must be taken off before entering a house or place of worship like mosque. 7. Usually drink are offered to guests. It is polite to accept 8. Don’t be offended when people ask you personal questions. It’s just the way they show friendliness and you don’t have to answer the question if you don’t want to.

Money Changing

When you decide to do money change do not get fooled by a HIGH rate or a big no commission sign. Sometimes if they put a high rate they will eventually asked for also a high commission at the end or the worst is they trick you, the common knwo trick is by using a small change (20’s or 10’s) to confuse you and count it really fast and the trick is while they were counting some slips back behind the counter - and they’re as good as any magician. Make sure the place itself at least look legit, a Commercial banks are always safest or Second best are registered money changers in sole-purpose shops or booths. If you find a good one it best to return.

Somepoints to remember :

Always ask first if they charge commission against the posted rate. Always ask if they discount bills smaller than $100, and by how much. Never let any changers count out your money and then take it back to check after it’s counted. Don’t hand over your money – unless it’s the big registered exchange – until they count out theirs in front of you.
