Talking of

LaM

An ‘Old’ friend! By John McGregor The other day I was put to shame (shame, isn’t it?) by driving past an old friend here, who used to be a neighbour until we emigrated across the Urb ten years ago. We don’t see him much now. To my amazement, he was riding a bike, slowly, but then he was going up a reasonably steep hill. It was brass-monkeys weather – a cold, biting wind with heavy rain in the air, but there he was, moving steadily up, not seeming particularly puffed, like I would have been (oh alright, I’d have walked up, in the extremely unlikely event I’d have been out riding a bike in that weather). I was travelling in the opposite direction, rather urgently to drop something off, so I didn’t stop. Job done, five minutes later near my home I saw him again – needless to say again pedalling slowly up a hill! There are plenty of hills in La Marina, aren’t there? This time I stopped and wound down my window, embarrassed in my (newish) car with the heater going full belt. Before I could say anything he said cheerfully. ‘Oh, hello, John, I was just going to pop your Christmas card through your letterbox – I’m just on the way to Lidl’. Lidl? – splutter - the one I moan about driving to, due to the distance involved? Suitably embarrassed I dragged him into our house, my wife thawed him out with a hot cup of coffee and a mince pie and we had a good chat for an hour. I had forgotten what a very funny man he is, with a wealth of stories from his very colourful life, and he made me laugh all over again with some more, updated from when we last saw him. Time rolls on, doesn’t it? I had him vaguely pigeon-holed into his mid/late

12

seventies. As casually as I could I asked him old he was now. ‘Eighty-three, going on eighty-four!’ he laughed as he went on ‘Last night I was at a club here on the Urb until nearly three in the morning. They do karaoke, you know, I sang three numbers.’ ‘What time did you get up this morning?’ my wife asked. ‘ Oh, I laid in until 8.30.’ came the shamefaced reply. I could regale you with some great stories of the brief two years I lived opposite him, you just couldn’t keep him down, he was rarely still. He reeled off a few tips about how to live life to the full (not sure about the karaoke, or the biking for that matter!), like eating well, where to buy excellent value English bacon slices to go with his fried egg lunch, not forgetting tomatoes and mushrooms of course. He lost his wife over ten years ago now, and is single again and very lively, so any ageless ladies who want a good night out, write in and I’ll put in a good word for you. He’s off to Benidorm with his good friends again this Christmas, and knowing him he’ll have a ball, he knows how to enjoy himself. ‘Right, I’d better get going’ he said, suddenly jumping up. ‘Lidl calls - I like it there, have you tried their biscuits?’ And off he went on his bike, laughing with a twinkle in his eye. If you know him, you’ll recognise him from my description, and you’ve probably seen him on his bike - if you don’t know him, remember his tip on long life – it’s all down to the bacon – that comes from Iceland actually!

LOVERS OF CRICKET!!

Good Afternoon I’ve sent a copy of this to Fouleye who I know loves Cricket!! My name is Robert Norton and I am the Captain and a Committee member for San Fulgencio Cricket Club which has only been going this year Your Magazine covers the area in which we play our matches. Currently we are only playing friendlies but we have already been selected by Cricket Espana to be in their development league for next season and our local town hall are in the process of building us a ground and everything apart from the playing strip is ready for next season. We played a match at La Manga the weekend before last to publicise our new shirt sponsorship deal and it would be brilliant if we could get a lot of coverage for that to enable us to get more sponsors on board. Regards Bob Norton

Happy New Year!

Marina FOULEYE’S

Handbag Snatchers Alert – By Jackie Lawson

As the Christmas decorations come out, so apparently do the thieves. There has been a spate of handbag snatching in and around the Urbanisation La Marina area. The thieves have been targeting lone women drivers. They have already snatched handbags from 5 women in one day, and other reports are coming in daily.

Suspects The suspects are 2 men and a blonde woman, and of Eastern European origin. They are using a large black Audi or similar, 4 wheel drive, with blacked out windows and an integral roof rack. There are Vs, Fs and the number 52 in the number plate. The handbag grabber is a slim man in his early 20’s, about 5ft 8 inches with dark hair.

Modus Operandi The 3 partners in crime have been spotted in their car watching out for their next victim. One of the men then gets out and strikes. Ruses used by the Spanish speaking thief, have been pointing out that something is wrong with the car, or brazenly opening the victims car door to say that a large vehicle needs to park in that space. The snatcher then reaches in and grabs the handbag and runs to the nearby parked black 4 x 4. These misery makers will stop at nothing to get what they want - your money! They have even opened a lady drivers boot while she was reversing so they could steal from her. The thieves have also got connections in Rojales, where they have tried to obtain cash from stolen credit cards.

Important Please don’t be another victim, as these 3 heartless thieves are a crime wave that needs to be stopped. If you see something suspicious, please call your local police station, and if you have been unlucky enough to be one of their victims, it is important that you go to the Guardia Civil and make a denuncia too. The more crimes these people are charged, with the stiffer the punishment.

This is both topical and seasonal, but does anyone remember that old story about the young couple about to have a baby? Because of legal beaurocracy they had to travel to a Town Hall somewhere to register or something - I think there were taxes involved. You know what my sense of humour’s like, it seems to me that there are a few parallels round here during this festive season – for Bethlehem read Catral…the only thing is, the Wise Men aren’t here yet! Hands up all those who knew exactly what they were doing when they bought property here in Spain in the last twentyfive years? If you can honestly say yes, then you’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din! Personally I took a few risks, nodded dumbly a few times pretending to understand, signed several things I wasn’t quite sure about, and I count myself as very fortunate that it seems to have turned out ok in the end – well, I hope it does eventually! The point I am making, in case you havn’t sussed my train of thought (no, this is not about the packed-out, heated San Fulgencio Express this month), this is about recent events in nearby Catral. It is easy for us in our relatively safe manors on La Marina, Gran Alacant and surroundings to make smug, knowledgeable remarks about the illegality of the 1,272 problem houses in that town, but I have to admit, I took chances when I came here – didn’t you? I always say that growing up in the UK, you understood the system. If it wasn’t A, it was B, and if it wasn’t either it had to be C as there was no other alternative. You filled in your forms, took them in or sent them off, paid your taxes, followed the laid-down system – and you got the right result. Then you came to Spain – and got a shock when you discovered that the ‘system’ – if you can call it that – was NOTHING like anything you ever experienced back home. Strange words like notary, escritura and abogado were bandied about. You were expected to turn up to buy a house with a plastic bag full of money, puzzlingly referred to as ‘black’ money. It still astounds me that there are three prices for a house in Spain, the one laid down for the rates in some dusty ledger, the ‘declared’ value that buyer and seller pay tax on, and lastly and highest, and absolutely zilch to do with the other two – the price you actually pay! Over the years I have tried to explain this to various newbies coming to take the plunge, at the time not even sure I’ve got it clearly right myself. Their uncomprehending faces are a joy to behold as you try to de-mystify house purchase, all the time adding to their previous lack of knowledge on the subject. So - back to Catral. From the various pro and anti reports abounding in our local English newspapers, the situation is getting steadily nastier, and more serious if that’s possible. This week was ‘ I told you so at the time’ from the previous controversial Town Hall administration, amidst reports that the present one is highly upset at apparent outrage and accusations towards them of corruption, where they claim to be genuinely trying to sort this huge mess out. As you can tell I’m sure, I am not usually lost for words, but this one - well, you couldn’t make it up, could you? Just

how were constructors allowed to build so many houses on ‘rustic’ land, get them connected to mains water and electricity, and move families in to live in them? Then those people who paid good money for their dream homes were told that they are illegal and will be pulled down! It is all at complete odds to the way we bought houses as we grew up, it couldn’t happen in the UK, the system wouldn’t let it – so how has it happened here? The latest ‘solution’ by the present administration appears to be a plan, known as the PGOU, to legalise the whole thing with a new infrastructure, whereby all owners are required to pay an amount equal to 1% of the value of their homes towards the cost of the plan. If you don’t join the plan there are dire consequences, you seem to be strongly advised to do so. OK so far? Well, immediately there are the ‘can’t pay/won’t pay’ group of disgruntled residents, and we have marches, protests, accusations and a higher level of tension than before. No-one has asked me what I would do in a similar situation, why should they, but if they did I would have to be honest and say I just do not know what I would do in the circumstances. We are all very good at saying helpful things like I’ll tell you what…no-one’s making me do…I’d rather die or go to prison before.., and similar grandiose declarations, but in truth – what would YOU do? Unless SOMETHING is done you have a totally unsaleable property on your hands, perhaps the major asset of your life which just MIGHT be destroyed; and it will do nobody any good unless SOMETHING is done, the situation can’t stand still. It beggars belief that one day bulldozers and many unsmiling Guardia Civil (they’re not very civil, are they?) will arrive in Catral and carry out the unimaginable, but I’ve seen similar scenes on Spanish TV before. To pull down 1,272 reasonably constructed decent, attractive homes, bought in good faith would appear to be a folly of immense proportions: what would they make of that in Brussels in the courts of Justice where they seem to protect the individual? But, we are assured from (unsympathetic) Spanish quarters, it may happen here. The usual Fouleye rules apply here. This is my view is, and it may not be yours. I have a great deal of sympathy for the affected residents; yes they took chances, but didn’t we all? This seems to me a genuine attempt to sort the mess out, and so I think I would try to find the money and pay up: it appears price-wise bargains were had at the time of purchase, which will only prove to be good value if the situation can be put right. I sincerely hope for everyone’s sake, it can be put right, and huge lessons are learnt. It’s the season of goodwill, after all, so let’s try to be a bit sympathetic towards those poor people who are affected, and are probably worried sick – it might have been you or me, we’re all human! Happy New Year from Fouleye!
