Letter from the Editor
Capitalines Fall 2015 After becoming an Austinite in 2008, one of the first things I checked off the to-do-list was transfer my Junior League membership from Dallas to Austin. I knew that my desire to connect with the city and with community-minded women would be facilitated through The Junior League of Austin ( JLA). It didn’t take long for me to realize that the City of Austin and JLA are inextricably linked. While Austin experiences recordbreaking growth and undergoes enormous changes, The Junior League of Austin consistently evolves to meet new demands placed on our community. In the Fall 2015 issue of Capitalines we focus on two of the League’s signature programs, Coats for Kids and A Christmas Affair, as we highlight the intrinsic value of these two events to our community. We also underscore ways that the League has engaged in an immediate impact through local and national disaster relief efforts. We examine the diversity, growth and future of our League as it parallels the shifting landscape of the City of Austin. In this issue you will gain insight and perspective on JLA from the lens of those who directly receive League funding and/or volunteer assistance. Finally, we feature the stories of two women whose JLA volunteer training and development later guided them on to positions of impact in Austin.

In addition to serving my community, one of the greatest aspects of volunteering with The Junior League of Austin is the time spent collaborating with other members and the friendships that last beyond our annual placements. This issue of Capitalines represents the collective effort of a hard-working and extremely talented group of women whom I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know. To my family, thank you for your constant love and encouragement. For our readers, best wishes for a happy and peaceful holiday season. I hope you enjoy this issue and thank you for your support of The Junior League of Austin.

$50,000 HURRICANE KATRINA 2005
In addition to providing volunteers and financial support to area nonprofit projects and programs, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has distinguished itself as a nonprofit capable of mobilizing quickly. JLA has a proven track record of taking action when disaster strikes by providing emergency financial support to local and national disaster relief efforts. It’s been 10 years since Hurricane Katrina, but the effects of the disaster are long lasting. Laura Wolf, President of JLA in August of 2005, recalls vividly, “Because so many New Orleans residents were evacuated to Austin, we knew that local nonprofits would see higher demands for their services and might not have the means, right away, to meet those demands. So we allocated $40,000 to a special fund to provide quick support to those organizations offering services to Katrina evacuees. We ended up giving 14 grants of approximately $3,000 each.” Wolf worked with the JLA Board to put it up to a vote in which the membership overwhelmingly supported providing this assistance: “League members were rallied to volunteer in shifts with the Red Cross, giving immediate assistance, and back packs were filled for middle school students who found themselves in Austin without the proper school supplies right before the new school year.” Through the grant application process, JLA ascertained which nonprofits were directly Fall 2015

assisting the evacuees and subsequently approved those to be funded. As the Community Assistance/Sponsorship Chair at the time, Morgen Hardin supervised the grants process, committing $10,000 to The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) for its Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
“It was an energizing experience to stand among a large group of women who can provide so much in the way of community support.” After the vote was taken to assist Katrina victims, Wolf distinctly remembered the positive response. One member said, “I felt so proud to stand up and vote. It was an energizing experience to stand among a (very large) group of women who can provide so much in the way of community support." Another member said “There are so many of us who felt that the $100 or so we gave was nothing in comparison to what was needed—I felt like being a part of a $50,000 gift was very poignant, thinking of what the ‘power of community’ truly means.” The next major disaster relief effort that JLA supported was the result of devastating fires just southeast of Austin. what is now known as the Bastrop County Fires seared a record on the state history books as the most destructive wildfire in Texas history. JLA looked back at what was done before and committed to the Disaster Relief Fund, using the same guidelines used for Katrina. Hardin, who served as 2011-2012 JLA President, recalled that while the applications were not so many, the opportunity was publicized to our community partners. A total of $8,000 was approved and administered by the JLA. This year, what has been named “The Memorial Day Floods” washed through Austin and other Texas cities. According to the National Weather Service, an estimated 35 trillion gallons of rain fell in the month of May, making it the wettest month in our state history. At least thirty people went missing due to flash flooding. Property damage to homes, cars and infrastructure devastated areas in and around Austin. JLA gave $2,500 to the American Red Cross and $2,500 to the Austin Disaster Relief Network during the May 26th Board Meeting to help fund emergency aid. JLA President Casie Wenmohs said, “The JLA is thinking long term about potentially setting up some emergency grant funding related to this flooding. The Community Council is discussing that, as well as the possibility of offering disaster relief volunteer training in the future.”

The Greatest Gift of All
Coats for Kids by: BY EMILY C. LASKOWSKI
Over the past 28 years, Coats for Kids (CFK) has distributed more than 750,000 winter coats to kids in need in the Austin area. This holiday season will mark its 29th year in Austin, and in those almost three decades there has been no shortage of Austinites donating coats, receiving coats or both.
CKF relies on volunteers to organize coat drives, sort coats during sorting week and help distribute coats on Distribution Day. “It’s amazing to see the volunteers—both those in The Junior League of Austin and not—come together to serve our community and guarantee that children will have warm coats for the winter months,” says Elizabeth Worley, a native Austinite and JLA Active member. “Nothing quite warms your heart more than seeing a child leave happy and smiling!”
“The first year I was on the Coats for Kids committee, I went to get lunch and was wearing my Coats for Kids shirt and hat in the drivethrough,” explains Courtney Clark, this year’s CFK Chair for The Junior League of Austin (JLA). “The woman at the window got all excited. She told me that when she was a kid, she used to get her winter coats there every year. Now, she’s a mom herself. She said she’s lucky enough that she can afford to buy coats for her kids, and she gave me her spare change as a donation.”
JLA first partnered with CFK in 1997. Brought to Austin by Jack Brown Cleaners in 1984, Coats for Kids succeeds with the help of its partners, which include KVUE and 98.1 KVET in addition to the JLA. “We have the pleasure of witnessing, on a firsthand basis, the outpouring of kindness from our viewers, coupled with the joy of those accepting, as we collect and distribute these coats,” says Patti C. Smith, President and General Manager of KVUE. “To know that the combined efforts of our viewers, The Junior League of Austin, Jack

Brown Cleaners, KVET and KVUE has had such a positive effect on the lives of those in need is incredibly rewarding.” This enormous effort improves the holiday season for kids and families throughout Austin. Although it sometimes takes a few months for the cold weather to arrive in Central Texas, a lack of a coat when needed often results in kids missing school, which has its own domino effect of consequences. “Even though Austin does not get as cold as other parts of the USA, we felt our company aligned well with the program and the need was present,” says Paul Brown, President of Jack Brown Cleaners. “Collecting, cleaning and distributing more than 750,000 winter coats over the past 28 years has kept the children of Central Texas warm from the heart.” Del Valle Independent School District is one of Coats for Kids’ biggest supporters and will be participating in CFK for its ninth year. “We are honored and proud to partner with The Junior League of Austin to serve our families,” says Celina Bley, Director of Communications and Community Relations for Del Valle ISD. “A warm and durable winter coat is needed every year for thousands of our students.”
JLA credits the steadfast support of its partners and volunteers with championing CFK each holiday season. While coats and jackets remain the focus of Coats for Kids, JLA is committed to doing even more. “We continue to grow and adapt to stay relevant to the community,” says Clark. “After 29 years of success, we know that the model works, but we also know that poverty in Austin is growing. We want to continue to Fall 2015

meet the needs of families.” Recent additions to CFK include the distribution of coats at a second site in Del Valle. JLA research showed that some families had a hard time getting to Palmer Events Center. CFK also added a Community Fair that provides additional services and information for families. “The Community Fair really shined last year,” says Clark. “The kids got to pick out books; they had vision screenings. Families were able to access information from health nonprofits and other organizations.” JLA credits the steadfast support of its partners and volunteers with championing CFK each holiday season. “Thanks to our amazing partnership with Jack Brown Cleaners, we can get 35,000 coats cleaned and ready for children who need them,” says Clark. “And our media partners, KVUE and 98.1 KVET, help us get donors and volunteers, as well as spread the word to families who might need a coat.” For volunteers and partners alike, the experience is rewarding year in and year out. “It’s been an honor to partner with The Junior League of Austin and Jack Brown Cleaners

on Coats for Kids,” says Smith. “At KVUE, we consider the collection and distribution of thousands of coats to kids in need as one of the most rewarding and important initiatives we undertake at the station.” And for those receiving coats, CFK continues to be much more than just picking out a coat. “The majority of our volunteers are Del Valle ISD staff members and their families who come every year because they know that this is not only a valuable service for our students, but that the program is a well-oiled machine where their time is spent working one-onone with families,” says Bley in discussing the smaller, satellite coat distribution site in Del Valle. "Our students and parents appreciate receiving their coats from their teachers, principals, bus drivers and—of course—the generous and always-smiling ladies of The Junior League of Austin.” When cold temperatures take hold of Austin, whether it’s in November or February, a coat is a necessity. Shivering in the cold while waiting for the bus is not what we want for our kids. But thanks to Coats for Kids, Austinites and JLA members alike know exactly what to do with a spare coat come holiday season.

Mary Harriman, a 19-year-old New York City debutante with a social conscience, founded the first Junior League in 1901. Moved by the suffering she saw around her, Harriman mobilized a group of 80 other young women, hence the name “Junior” League, to work to improve the squalid conditions in which immigrants were living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Harriman’s vision for improving communities by using the energy and commitment of trained volunteers inspired others around the country. The second Junior League was started in Boston, Massachusetts in 1907 and was soon followed by the founding of the Brooklyn, New York Junior League in 1910.

We asked staff members at the League's nonprofit projects how The Junior League of Austin helps support their mission and goals in the Central Texas area. Here is what they said.
JLA Done-in-a-Day volunteers on assignment
“Austin would not be Austin without the Junior League. The impact these powerful women have on our organization will echo throughout eternity! That simple!”
The Junior League of Austin (JLA) works with a diverse roster of nonprofit organizations across the Central Texas community that addresses a wide range of community needs. Resources that the League provides are in the form of volunteer time and/or funding. With continued membership growth, the League was able to surpass the 29 nonprofits supported last year to 32 this year. Two new nonprofits working with the League this year are the Shoal Creek Conservancy and Texas Humane Heroes. Over 400 volunteers and in excess of $330,000 in funding has been allocated to the League’s community project efforts this year alone.
Alan Graham, President, Mobile Loaves & Fishes “Not only was The Junior League of Austin the very first funder helping to get CASA of Travis County started back in 1985, but the League has continued over the last 30 years to believe in our vision of a trained CASA volunteer to speak up for the best interest of every child in Austin who’s been abused or neglected. League members are powerful advocates for children and it is fitting that an organization like CASA, whose mission is to train and empower volunteers to help children in need, has been so well-supported by The Junior League of Austin, with its mission of voluntarism.” Laura D. The generosity of JLA as well as the volunteers’ commitment to and respect for the underserved people who rely on The Arc of the Capital Area builds a stronger community for all of us. “The Junior League of Austin volunteers have been critical in meeting the vision for ZACH Theatre. JLA members are among our most dedicated and hard-working volunteers, and our productions simply could not happen without them! JLA volunteers are often the very first individuals our patrons interact with when visiting the theatre, ensuring that all patrons are seated correctly and on time, visit the photo booth or gift shop and know about our postshow meet and greets with the actors. It’s the difference between a good versus an extraordinary visit to the theatre, and every day The Junior League of Austin is helping us introduce children and families to theatre for the first time or create theatre experiences that encourage dialogue and discussion among our community. They are a vital part of this process, and we are deeply grateful of their service to ZACH and Central Texas.” Kimberly Theodore Sidey, Associate Director of Development, ZACH Theatre “Without our League Volunteers’ indispensable contributions of professionalism, compassion and commitment, Animal Trustees of Austin would not be able to provide our very low-cost veterinary services to the needy pets and clients of Austin, making a difference in the lives of every cat and dog (and their guardians) who enter our doors. “

“Austin Children’s Shelter (ACS) is proud to be a longstanding community partner with The Junior League of Austin (JLA). We are grateful for their generosity – both in terms of their financial support for our programs and the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of their volunteers, who have been especially instrumental in helping us further our mission of protecting and healing victims of child abuse and neglect. For many years, The Junior League of Austin and its members have dedicated funds and countless hours to support programs across the entire ACS continuum of services, including our child abuse prevention programs, child development and family support center and residential programs. JLA volunteers have been an integral part of our success and a stable and consistent influence for our youth. It is because of their dedication to building a better community that we are able to care for the most vulnerable children across Central Texas.”
Laura J. Kay, Director of Volunteer Services, Animal Trustees of Austin “The Junior League of Austin has brought us volunteers who have contributed significantly to Girls Empowerment Network through direct service with high-risk girls, leadership, expanding our network and helping us to learn how to be an excellent partner to community groups. The grant has afforded us a Volunteer Manager position which has transformed our organization and our reach in the community. We feel as though we have learned as much from The Junior League of Austin volunteers who have come through our organization as they have from us and our girls. We are a better organization because of The Junior League of Austin.”

Our Future Impact by: EMILY C. LASKOWSKI
The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has never lacked ambition in wanting to make a difference. This year, it’s committed to finding ways to impact the community like never before. We’ve learned that JLA has already impacted the Austin-area in a number of different ways. Now, we want to consider how we might focus our influence to shape, improve and affect targeted changes in our community. “While the JLA does not currently use an impact area model for serving the community, we are thinking about how we could start building one,” says The Junior League of Austin President Casie Wenmohs. “The first step is looking at existing JLA projects and programs in context of the issues being addressed and having a conversation about that. We also want to inform our members so they can articulate the impact they are having as individuals.” Each year, JLA invests thousands of volunteer hours in local nonprofits and programs. This year, more than 1,300 JLA Active and Provisional members will provide more than 130,000 volunteer hours to our community.
Part of the JLA’s goal for the future is to remain a valued leader in the community. In addition to the volunteer service that JLA members contribute to the community, The Junior League of Austin has provided millions of dollars over the years to fund programs and nonprofits that improve the overall wellbeing of our community. The Junior League of Austin is no stranger to growth. Along with our growing city, part of our goal for the future is to remain a valued leader in the community. By considering ways to focus, plan or improve our impact capabilities, we are responding to the constantly-changing world around us. So bring on 2016—we’ll be ready!

Growing League, Growing City by: MCKENSIE DEROCHER
Much like the recent population boom in Austin and surrounding communities, The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) membership is also experiencing year-over-year growth. Admitted as the 123rd League in 1934 and currently ranked 4th largest by membership size with the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., the League continues to recruit new members and expand its footprint across the Central Texas community. With a current membership of more than 2,560, the League experienced a 13 percent membership increase over last year and saw its largest Provisional (new member) enrollment growth rate measured in the past 10 years at 56 percent.
Membership growth has a direct positive impact. More members equates to more resources, which allows the League the opportunity to provide greater support for its community nonprofit projects, in addition to expanding Signature Impact Programs. For example, the League is supporting 32 community projects this year compared to 29 last year and the FIT Food In Tummies program was expanded from one Del Valle Independent School District school (Baty Elementary School) to two (Hillcrest Elementary School) in the 2011-2012 school year due to increased funding and volunteers.
With our membership as eclectic as the Austin music and restaurant scene, JLA members represent every major community in the Greater Austin area. From mothers to GEORGETOWN lawyers, lobbyists, teachers, realtors, doctors, writers, LEANDER executives and artists to ROUND ROCK name a few, the diversity of the membership brings a vast array of perspectives and skill sets. With such a diverse MANOR LAKEWAY membership, training and educational opportunities AUSTIN abound, making JLA a center of learning, leadership and development. BUDA

The League is currently working on construction drawings with a goal of breaking ground during the 2016-2017 League year. Building Better Communities Community Projects
The Junior League of Austin (JLA) provides volunteers and funding to area nonprofits for the benefit and enrichment of the Austin community and the development and education of League volunteers. Last year nearly 1,000 League members provided thousands of volunteer hours to the League’s community projects and programs. The JLA has also provided millions of dollars over the years to fund programs and nonprofits that improve the overall well-being of our community. MAKING THE HOLIDAYS
Merry and Bright Now in its 40th year, A Christmas Affair continues to bring joy to friends, families and those in need. by: EMILY C. LASKOWSKI

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Junior League of Austin’s A Christmas Affair (ACA). What once started as a small event at the Driskill Hotel is now an Austin holiday institution, with more than 200 merchants and over 20,000 loyal shoppers who converge on the Palmer Events Center in late November. For many, ACA signals the beginning of the holiday season. For countless Austin organizations, it’s the source of financial assistance that will support them through a new year.
of whom have been part of A Christmas Affair before. “We love participating in A Christmas Affair because we know our participation helps The Junior League of Austin raise funds for many needed programs in our community,” says Amanda Bates, owner of Austin-based pie shop Tiny Pies. “Since we ship our pies nationally and A Christmas Affair attendees come from all over the state, it’s been great for us to introduce our products to folks outside of the Austin-area.”
Another major asset of JLA is its impressive network of Sustainers, former Active members that still support JLA (but in an advisory capacity). “Our Sustainers are unbelievable,” says Priestner. “They continue to offer guidance, support, donations and volunteer hours. A Christmas Affair is truly an all-JLA-hands-on-deck event!”
More than anything else, ACA reminds Austinites that it’s the season to give. Whether it’s the charming hustle and bustle of finding gifts for loved ones, the overwhelming support of volunteers or the heartwarming fact that just being at ACA helps those in need, The Junior League of Austin’s A Christmas Affair has enough holiday spirit to last us the whole year through.
“We haven't missed A Christmas Affair in almost 20 years.”

This year, A Christmas Affair will kick off on November 18 with its much-anticipated Preview Party. “We cannot wait to unveil the new Preview Party format,” says Priestner. “This year, we will welcome attendees to a 90-minute private shopping event followed by a dinner that will include a live auction and other fundraising opportunities.” Market Days, ACA’s main feature, will take place November 19 through November 22 with more than 200 merchants—many

It is an honor to welcome you to the 40th annual The Junior League of Austin A Christmas Affair, Twas’ the Night Before Christmas in Texas – Y’all! We are excited to kick off the holiday season Texas style with more than 200 carefully selected merchants in our holiday market and eight special events, all taking place in a ranch chic setting. As you explore A Christmas Affair, be sure to capture the moments that make the holidays so sweet – the sparkle in children’s eyes as they earnestly visit with Santa, the feeling of triumph when you discover the perfect gift for your best friend or the blissful moments spent with friends hitting the dance floor, munching on brunch or shopping.
To our loyal A Christmas Affair attendees, we thank you for making our 40-year tradition part of your holiday traditions! Your participation in A Christmas Affair is what enables The Junior League of Austin to carry forth the meaningful projects that are featured in this magazine. Because of your support, we are able to make a significant impact! This year’s theme is inspired by a book read to me as a child by my Grandmother Sunshine, Twas’ the Night Before Christmas in Texas That Is. I was blessed with two grandmothers who taught me everything I needed to know to be part of The Junior League of Austin: have a determined spirit set on serving others. It is humbling to be part of our 2,500-member League, made up of strong women who inspire me every day by what we accomplish together in the Austin community! We appreciate your celebrating with us and wish you a happy holiday season – y’all!

The Junior League of Austin Letter from the Sustaining President Welcome to A Christmas Affair, the event that for 40 years has served as the unofficial start of the holiday season in Austin. When the doors open on this year’s event, you will not only be able to feel the excitement of the holiday season but also the spirit of giving that surrounds the event. For the 1,250 Sustaining members of The Junior League of Austin, A Christmas Affair is an annual opportunity to reminisce and support the future of our organization. The majority of Sustaining members have volunteered in the past in some capacity at the event and each has her own unique A Christmas Affair memory. For all Sustainers, the event continues to be an accomplishment in which we take enormous pride. A Christmas Affair continues to be one of the proud traditions of The Junior League of Austin and is a great example of the tireless volunteer efforts of our members.
The dedication of the Active members, along with the generous support of the Austin community, enables The Junior League of Austin to provide funding and thousands of volunteer hours to area nonprofit agencies each year. Sustaining members are those members who have completed Active status. Each year we return to A Christmas Affair to shop, support our organization and catch-up with old friends. For forty years, this event has been the gathering place where the holiday season begins. Thanks to all of you who come and join us at A Christmas Affair each year, because by doing so, you too are supporting the mission and vision of The Junior League of Austin.
