capitalines fall 2016 I was thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the work that The Junior League of Austin (JLA) does in our community and beyond when I was asked to serve as Capitalines Editor for 2016-17. The JLA theme this year is building a better YOU, building a better LEAGUE, building a better AUSTIN. When JLA President Sarah Valenzeula told me about her message, I knew our committee had an opportunity to tell the story we are so familiar with - how the League cultivates women as volunteers and leaders to grow and support the community, as well as themselves, for the better. All of our JLA volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year, because they want to build a better Austin. We, as members of the League, also have the opportunity to build a better self through our work. Ultimately, this means our organization also becomes stronger. Every week, I see how the women of our organization have influenced Austin; our hard work is throughout, from landmarks on the Hike and Bike trail to successful capital campaigns for local non-profits.

The work and legacy of JLA members is all around Austin, and you don’t have to look far to find it. In this issue, we highlight our current members’ work with projects like Settlement Home Austin and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid. We also talk to a sustaining member about how her work in JLA paved the road to her founding the Seton Breast Care Center. In addition, the Leauge is looking forward to celebrating another A Christmas Affair (ACA)! As our premiere fundraiser, ACA is more than just shopping and parties. It’s shopping for a cause, and strengthens the Austin community by supporting the power of volunteer work. ACA also serves as the kick-off for one of our flagship programs: Coats for Kids (CFK), which is celebrating its 30th year. Letter from the President On behalf of The Junior League of Austin (JLA), welcome to A Christmas Affair 2016 – Merry & Bright. This five-day holiday event serves our largest annual fundraiser, orchestrated by an amazing team of 78 volunteers. We hope the range of events and shopping experiences will delight you and help give back to the Central Texas community.

membership development opportunities. Through on the job experiences and extensive training, we are helping to create future civic leaders, fundraisers, and trained volunteers for Austin. The League year is nearly halfway complete, but much more is to come with the December Coats for Kids activities, new spring fundraisers – Bunny Brunch and Austin Entertains. Work also continues to advance with the Community Impact Center and future JLA headquarters where we hope to break ground in 2017. This space will help generate new opportunities to partner with even more community programs, scale our food pantry and better plan for our League’s future.

This year, The Junior League of Austin is focused on building a better YOU, building a better LEAGUE, building a better AUSTIN. Our planning, programming and investments align to these goals. We build a better Austin through our volunteers and partnership with key community non-profits. Last year, our membership hit a new record with 150,000 hours in service. 32 community non-profits benefit from our volunteers and grants throughout all of Austin. Additionally, the FIT Food In Tummies program delivers 1,400 weekend backpacks of food to students in Del Valle elementary schools each week of the school year. We celebrate 30 years of Coats for Kids with 30,000+ warm coats distributed to Austin’s young people in need.

contribution. They named the outlook Lou Neff Point in her honor as well as a road that passes through Zilker Park.

One afternoon, as I am about to hit the two mile mark on my run, I stop for a sip of water at Lou Neff Point on the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail. As a five year Active in The Junior League of Austin (JLA), I’ve heard Lou Neff’s name mentioned, but it wasn’t until last year that I discovered that she was a past JLA President. It instantly became my favorite piece of JLA trivia; I was curious about who Lou Neff was and what she had done for Austin.

Her family said Lou Neff was dedicated to improving her community and passionate about JLA. “Lou believed in the power of The Junior League of Austin and our family is inspired by her legacy. We believe in the work the League does for our community,” said Liz Neff, an active JLA member and grand daughter-in-law of Neff. “The League is where it is today thanks to strong women leaders like Lou.”

I learned that Barbara Louise “Lou” Davis Neff served as President of JLA from 1967-1968, but her civic involvement did not stop there. Mrs. Neff was also a former President of the Settlement Home and once named “Woman of the Year” by the City of Austin. She worked closely with Lady Bird Johnson to develop the trail around Lady Bird Lake, and, following her death in 1974, Austin City Council made the decision to recognize her Fall 2016

Now, whenever I pass Lou Neff Point, it serves as a reminder of the power of community service and the lasting impact that one woman can make on a community like Austin.

Amplify Austin: Crank Up the Giving! BY: KELLY CRIPE

Amplify Austin Day is an annual community-wide day of online giving in support of central Texas nonprofits. Gifts made through AmplifyATX.org during the 24-hour period are amplified by incentive matching dollars from sponsors. Though The Junior League of Austin (JLA) had participated in Amplify Austin Day in the past, in 2015 fundraising efforts were refocused and dedicated to our flagship program, FIT - Food in Tummies.

This year, the League was able to raise even more money for FIT, thanks to our generous donors who participated in the campaign. JLA was the recipient of the “Bass Booster” prize awarded to the non-profit that received the most donations within an hour. In total, more than $25,000 was raised from 519 donors. The Amplify Austin campaign has now become JLA’s biggest fundraiser dedicated Fundra to FIT. Work is underway on the League’s fundraising page as the committee is looking forward to Amplify Austin Day 2017 and topping last year’s fundraising goals. Save the date for March 2, 2017 to help JLA crank up the giving!

sustaining her life’s mission: q&a with Susan Lubin BY: KELLY CRIPE Following her own breast cancer diagnosis, Susan Lubin, a Sustaining member of The Junior League of Austin (JLA), embarked on an epic fundraising charge to ensure that all Austin women receive the quality care she received. With a sincere commitment to the cause and phenomenal fundraising skills learned during her career in the JLA, she discovered her life’s mission in co-founding the Seton Breast Care Center.

effectiveness of volunteering and just what an incredible impact an individual can have. What have been the most moving or rewarding moments throughout your involvement with the Center? The most moving and tragic moment for me was when Amber, my thirty-year-old, stage four (terminal), friend died. She was one of the most vocal crusaders against breast cancer, speaking to groups wherever and whenever she could. Three nights before she succumbed, about six of her friends, including me, held a prayer vigil over her bedside. We encircled her bed and took turns saying prayers. I was last and simply sang “Amazing Grace.” I sang it a week later at her funeral. The most rewarding moments are when the Center diagnoses someone with early stage breast cancer and we know that we have, hopefully, saved a life.

What motivated you to start the Seton Breast Care Center? When I felt a tiny lump in my breast, I had the good fortune to be able to get an appointment the very next day with my surgeon. As a doctor’s wife, I received such excellent and expedient care that within two weeks of my diagnosis of stage one, estrogen positive breast cancer, I underwent a double mastectomy and was cancer free. I needed no other treatment. I truly felt like the luckiest woman alive. I was fully aware that most women do not get the incredible care that I did and also do not know how to navigate the medical system.

What do you want our readers to know about you? I’m just an ordinary person who, with the help of many others, did an extraordinary thing. One person really CAN make a difference, especially when you join with others for a common goal. I say this to encourage others to go out and make their dream a reality. What do you want our readers to know about The Junior League of Austin? The Junior League of Austin in an extraordinary organization of powerful women who are committed to making our city a great place for everyone.

During my recovery, I read an article in a women’s magazine about a comprehensive breast cancer center in Pennsylvania and thought that we needed one here. I wanted to create a center that would diagnose the disease and then facilitate women through their breast cancer journey. This has truly become my mission in life. There are also many women who don’t have access to medical care because they can’t afford it or they don’t have medical insurance. The Seton Breast Care Center offers everyone, regardless of their income and insurance status, state-of-the-art care and state-of-the-art caring in a beautiful, nonthreatening spa-like atmosphere.

Was there ever a moment when you doubted that you would reach your fundraising goal for the Center? Never! My co-founder, Marcia Levy, and I had a stellar fundraising committee. We were all so committed to making the Center happen, and we raised $7 million in three years. How did your experience as a member of JLA impact your involvement in the Center? I learned everything I know about fundraising and volunteer work from my League training. The League taught me the Fall 2016

Texas rio grande legal aid: Where Legal Matters Matter BY: KENDALL GUINN JLA volunteers provide a valuable service to our community by staffing TRLA legal clinics that allow Austin residents the opportunity to get the legal help they need without going into debt or losing their rights. It’s six o’clock in the evening and a line is wrapped out the door and down the sidewalk in front of the cafeteria at Austin’s Martin Middle School. Men and women and families are waiting patiently for their turn to talk to an attorney with the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid Clinic (TRLA). Volunteers bustle about checking people in, helping fill out paperwork and ushering clients to speak with the lawyers. Each person who arrives will get a 20-minute audience with an attorney to discuss their legal matter. There is no cost for the legal services.

“

Albright. “There are so many hurdles to the legal process and so many people don’t have access to and cannot afford to hire an attorney. The TRLA clinics offer a unique venue for people to access legal help and advice that they wouldn’t otherwise get.” Briana Novian is a first year active in JLA and a practicing attorney. After completing JLA’s Spanish immersion program earlier this year, she wanted to find a placement in which she could use her newly learned language skills while also putting her law degree to work. “I volunteered at a legal clinic when I was in law school, and loved the experience,” she says. “This type of work is a great balance with my day job and I’m excited that I can make a difference and use my unique skills to help the community.”

The support of The Junior League of Austin has been vital to the success of our legal aid clinics.

Clinic assistants and advice attorneys work with people on a variety of legal issues and processes. Cases range from family matters such as custody disputes and divorces to personal matters like landlord disputes and employment issues. Clinic volunteers can assist with completing lengthy and often complicated legal forms.

Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid offers free legal services to lowincome residents and these clinics, hosted on Mondays and Wednesdays, are among the many ways they TRLA offers legal assistance. TRLA is the third largest legal services provider in the nation and the largest in the state of Texas, serving approximately 25,000 clients each year.

“There are several processes that don’t actually require an attorney, but can be and overwhelming and intimidating to face without someone who knows the system to walk you through it,” says Sheri Toloiver, a JLA Sustainer who served as Project Chair and a Clinic Advice Attorney in 2015-2016.

The Junior League of Austin (JLA) volunteers can serve as attorneys, advocates, interpreters or self-help assistants. This year, JLA will offer four board-certified attorneys and five other volunteers to assist with the busy clinics.

“Sometimes people just need help understanding the process and talking to an attorney gives them the confidence they need to take on the legal system.”

“The support of The Junior League of Austin has been vital to the success of our legal aid clinics,” says April Kubik, Pro Bono Coordinator for TRLA and a JLA Sustainer.

In some cases, TRLA volunteer attorneys end up taking on people they meet at the clinic as pro bono clients.

This will be active Stephanie Albright’s second year to serve as a Clinic Advice Attorney for TRLA. While Albright practices environmental law by day, she was excited to discover that JLA offered a placement where she could make use of her education and law degree.

“I took on a couple of cases that I found to be meaningful for me,” says Toloiver. “Even though I am a Sustainer now, I will continue to volunteer at the TRLA.”

helping girls race Toward a Better Future BY: AMY L. MITCHELL Running club volunteers help to empower young women at the Settlement Home through commitment and friendship Making new friends through volunteering is just one of the many excellent reasons to be a member of The Junior League of Austin (JLA). In partnership with The Settlement Home for Children, a group of League members are not only doing just that, but they are also creating new opportunities for young women and forging lifelong connections through fitness. Now in its eighth year, The Settlement Home’s Run Club pairs teenage girls between the ages of 12 and 18 with JLA volunteers who train with them weekly. This program is just one of the many that Settlement home provides. They also serve children in need by offering residential programs and fostering and adoption.

One of those volunteers is Active member Meredith Clifford, who is serving in her second year with the program. “I love my placement at The Settlement Home!” said Clifford. “Last year, it made me proud to see how excited the girls were and the progress they made throughout the year as they pushed themselves to beat their personal best times.

On the track at The Settlement Home grounds, they run timed miles, sprints, and train for races. If a young lady shows commitment and trains consistently, she will have the opportunity to race in a 5K with the Run Club. So far, the girls have participated in numerous 5Ks around Austin, including the Color Run, the Bubble Run, the Longhorn Run, the CASA Superhero Run, and the Run for the Water.

“One of my favorite things is the conversation with these amazing young women as we jog the track every week,” Clifford continued. “Many of them open up about their lives, sharing details of their friendships, families, and goals for their future. Some of the girls faced unimaginable challenges in their personal lives before moving to The Settlement Home.”

They see the crowds cheering “ for them at the races and it really builds their self-esteem. ”

Clifford also stressed the importance of consistency to the young women in the program. “JLA volunteers provide not only consistency,” said Clifford, “but they also serve as positive role models, not just for fitness and wellness, but to help the girls see a world beyond what they may know from their own home life.”

“JLA volunteers give individual attention to our children who are so hungry to feel special,” said Darcie DeShazo, Executive Director of The Settlement Home. “The kids know there’s going to be that particular JLA volunteer at the track and that’s a big motivator for them to run.” League volunteers agree that developing that relationship with the kids is incredibly rewarding.

The League’s support for The Settlement Home Run Club doesn’t stop on the track. JLA also provides additional funding for athletic gear such as workout clothes, running shoes, and sports bras; registration fees for the girls’ races are also covered as part of this program.

“One of the best things about this placement is the consistency,” said Kate Rhodes, The Settlement Home Run Club JLA Project Chair. “You get to see the same girls every week and make an impact in their lives over the course of the whole year.”

“Many of these kids have never had the privilege or the opportunity to race,” DeShazo said, “They see the crowds cheering for them at the races and it really builds their selfesteem. They just love it!”

Rhodes added that some League volunteers enjoy the placement so much they want to keep running with the program. “Two of our current volunteers have had this placement before, and requested it again this year,” continued Rhodes. “Everyone who has the placement is thrilled about it.” Fall 2016

What the Run Club has discovered is a sure-fire recipe for success: Taking one dedicated community partner and adding a group of committed League volunteers creates an empowering and life-changing program that will last far beyond the 3.1 miles.

30 Things to know on the 30th Anniversary of Coats for Kids BY: KENDALL GUINN

This year, Coats for Kids celebrates its 30th anniversary in Austin. Read these thirty fast facts to learn how it got started and how it became one of the country's most successful coat drives.

Coats for Kids was founded by Jack Brown Cleaners, a family-owned and operated dry cleaning business.

The idea for Coats for Kids was born out of a convention of top tier dry cleaning companies from around the United States, which Jack Brown Cleaners leaders attended.

Jack Brown Cleaners opened its first location in Austin in 1935 under the name “San Jacinto Laundry.” It wasn’t until 1971 that the company changed its name to Jack Brown Cleaners.

The inspiration came from a dry cleaner in Wisconsin who had piloted a similar charitable effort.

Jack Brown Cleaners hosted the inaugural Coats for Kids drive in December of 1986.

Not everyone was convinced that Coats for Kids would be successful in Austin. It’s Texas, after all, and winters don’t get as cold as they do in Northern states. But the Brown family had a hunch that it could be just as successful here as in other states.

Before The Junior League of Austin became involved, Jack Brown Cleaners partnered with Goodwill Industries of Central Texas.

The first Coats for Kids was hosted at Goodwill at 5th and Lamar, where HomeAway’s downtown offices now sit.

The Junior League of Austin became involved with Coats for Kids in 1994.

The League’s mission for Coats for Kids was to provide support in three key areas: organization, fundraising and volunteers.

According to Paul Brown, president of Jack Brown Cleaners, JLA “brought a new level of organization to the initiative.”

In 2002, Palmer Events Center opened and became the new home for Coats for Kids Distribution Day.

After the school drives end, donations at Jack Brown Cleaners locations skyrocket. Sometimes there are so many coats donated that they fill the entire lobby!

For three weeks out of each year Jack Brown Cleaners dedicates an entire cleaning plant to Coats for Kids.

During sorting week, volunteers will look for rips, tears and stains on each coat so that only gently used or new coats are given to children.

As the program gained momentum, it outgrew the Goodwill facility. In 1995, it was moved to City Coliseum, a converted airplane hangar with dirt floors that sat where the Palmer Events Center is now located.

Each year a coast drive competition is hosted throughout the Austin area. Local businesses and schools compete to collect coats.

Coats are cleaned, dried, then stored.

Youth Sorting Night is the most heavily attended sorting shift during the week before Distribution Day. Open to children ages eight and up, the League has to cap the number of volunteers at 300 due to popularity!

If the weather on Distribution Day is cold, more coats are distributed on that day than if the weather is warm.

Coats for Kids provides the additional coats to nonprofit agencies across Central Texas who donate them to people in need who are unable to visit on Distribution Day.

While Coats for Kids has been replicated throughout the country, very few have had the success as Jack Brown Cleaners and The Junior League of Austin have had in Austin. Similar programs exist in Boston, North Carolina and Wisconsin, yet Coats for Kids in Austin collects more coats each year than any of its kind across the country.

It only takes $15 to help buy a warm winter coat for a child.

Since its founding thirty years ago, over 900,000 coats have been donated.

Any coats that are not handed out on the floor on Distribution Day are given to dozens of other non-profits through the coat surplus program.

Austin is a GREAT place to liveâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;Śwe all know from the amount of people moving and living here that everyone wants to be in Austin! In my eyes, one of the things that makes Austin a special place to live and give is The Junior League of Austin (JLA).

I feel strongly that as Sustaining members, our role is to help promote the development of women by being advisors, generous donors and mentors to the Active Membership as help is requested. As Ambassadors for JLA, we have a great deal of past history, support and collective wisdom to share.

Throughout my many years in the League, it was a privilege to witness the impact the League has on our membership and the community. Member after member that makes a difference in our community in various ways; gives credit to JLA for the type of leader she has become. It is an honor to serve as the Sustaining President of The Junior League of Austin this year.

Something that has changed since my days as an active member is that the Sustainer Engagement Committee exists to help League Sustainers plug in, and the group is working to create opportunities for interested members. Dressed in festive colors and smocked outfits, fresh little faces gaze in wonder as the kids briefly pause to take in the exquisitely decorated 20-foot-tall Christmas tree, then pick up speed again as they remember where they’re going. Their momentum indicates that this is no time for dawdling.

The asyet empty aisles soften most sounds and create a cushiony path connecting hundreds of merchants, each one of whom is making last minute adjustments to artfully decorated displays. Each merchant appears to be selling treasures more riveting than the last.

Although captivating, the hurrying children barely notice the many rows of shiny bits and baubles. Other family members are more intrigued; however, and make mental notes of where to shop later in the day. Shopping will just have to wait, though, because someone more important waits for them upstairs. After all, it’s not every day one gets to have breakfast with Santa Claus. In what many local families enjoy as a childhood rite of passage, meeting Santa himself is sure to soon become a precious holiday memory for these kids. And, nibbling on kolaches and chocolate milk with the “Big Guy” at the Palmer can only mean one thing: Christmas has come again to Austin. The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is delighted to annually host an event which is one of Austin’s favorite and most popular holiday traditions. Celebrating its 41st year, this massive fund-raising event brings together an assemblage of merchants and activities not many can resist. The arrival of the much-beloved Christmas Market called “A Christmas Fall 2016

Affair” (ACA) signifies to most Austinites that the Christmas season has officially begun. “ACA really kicks off the Christmas season in Austin,” said Sarah Valenzuela, JLA President. “Growing up here, I remember shopping in the marketplace with my mom, and you just knew that when ACA arrived, Christmas had, too.” Originally held at The Driskill, ACA is still filled with charming events and some of Austin’s favorite holiday shopping. However, the primary goal of ACA remains the same: first and foremost, to raise funds which are desperately needed in the Austin community. “ACA is the premier fundraiser of The Junior League of Austin,” said Leslie Moore, A Christmas Affair Chair. “It allows us to further our mission by raising more than $800,000 annually to put into the community. This money allows us to continue supplying both trained volunteers and funding to 32 community partners and 8 community projects.” Some of those community projects include FIT - Food-In-Tummies (FIT), Done-In-A-Day (DIAD), and Coats for Kids (CFK). “ACA is an amazing fundraiser orchestrated by a dedicated committee of 78 people who spend an entire year planning it in advance,” said Valenzuela. “So much of what we do in the League is only seen in small pieces, and I love to see our membership all come together and amplify what we are able to do in the Austin community. It is a tremendous experience to be able to showcase the great work of our League in such a large setting.” This year, ACA runs at Palmer Events Center from November 17 - 20, and offers not only Market Days, but also a multitude of special events to start the holiday season including a Preview Party, Fall 2016

a Brunch, a Sunrise Sip & Shop, and four of the ever-popular Santa Parties. Additionally, there will be an after-market sale of all of the decorations used at the event. From start to finish, ACA will have more than 200 merchants and upwards of 25,000 loyal shoppers, some of whom have traveled from much farther than Austin to enjoy ACA.

“The thing I’m most excited about this year is that my sister is flying in from Germany,” said Moore, “and my friends from college are coming in from St. Louis for the shopping, too.” Some annual visitors making the ACA pilgrimage are a little bit closer to home. “For me, the best part of the whole event is being able spend a little special time with my daughter,” said Patricia Williams, a resident of Sherman, Texas, who drives five hours to attend ACA. “We shop and catch up with each other’s lives, which we don’t get to do as much as we would like. The merchants sell unique gifts, and of course, one of the highlights is when my grandson rockets up the stairs to visit with Santa.”

When you pay that $15 entrance donation, you are putting programs to work in Austin.” “Our event sponsors are the real champions of both our League and the community,” Valenzuela continued. “They help to offset our costs so we can put more of our dollars back into Austin. We truly need the help of everyone to pull off this event, and our sponsors are heroes because they make that happen.” Not surprisingly, the warmest and most up-lifting ACA tradition is the one which embodies the true spirit of Christmas. Whether shopping or nibbling with Santa, everyone spreads joy by giving back.
