From the editor Every fall, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) general membership meeting catches me by surprise. I walk in fretting about deadlines, errands, and parking woes and walk out focused on the amazing things happening and how I can contribute and be a part of them. It’s hardly news that JLA is critical in our community – many of Austin’s greatest resources are made possible through JLA time, service, and funds. What is less readily apparent and truly unique about the organization is its dedication to developing its members. Teachers plan fundraising activities. Attorneys volunteer with animal shelters. Stay-at-home moms run huge committees. Opportunities, trainings, and experiences are all centered around empowering women to make an impact. And what an impact is made! Turn to page 19 to see how The Arc of the Arts program offers people with intellectual disabilities not only the opportunity to create artwork, but also the experience of learning to display, market, and sell their work. On page 20, Missy Sharpe’s poignant article on the Mothers’ Milk Bank recounts one League member’s story as a new mom, a donor, and then a volunteer. Read Sustaining member Nancy Wade’s entertaining recollection of the first ever A Christmas Affair on page 17. Then, flip to the tabbed ACA section to see how the event has grown and evolved over the past 38 years. Holly Mace Massingill and her team have truly created a Winter Wonderland this year – the perfect opening to the holiday season. Every gift purchased, every photo with Santa taken and every lucky auction item purchased sends funds back into our town and our community. So join in the fun, shop to your heart’s content and celebrate all we are able to do as we enter the holiday season. A huge thanks to the Capitalines committee -- they are as good natured as they are hard working -- and to every League member for giving us such an abundance of inspiring material to work with.

Give a Little, Get a Little

How JLA programs are impacting our community...and our members |

Kids celebrate their new coats at the 2012 Coats for Kids event.

FIT volunteers at the Kick-Off Pep Rally on Friday, September 6th at Baty Elementary.

Coats for Kids

FIT

What does Coats for Kids do for the community?

What does FIT-Food in Tummies do for the community?

“By providing over 30,000 coats to children in Central Texas, Coats for Kids ensures that children are able to go to school and play outside over the cold months. By taking that expense off the parents, they no longer have to decide between feeding their family or getting a coat.”

“Coats for Kids has been one of my most fulfilling placements in the JLA. Working with 25 women to put on such a fabulous event has allowed me to make deep friendships while serving the community. Distribution Day is one of my favorite days of the year because we actually get to see all of the smiling faces with their new coats.“

“The Food in Tummies (FIT) program provides for such a basic human need. The more I’ve learned about hunger, and childhood hunger in particular, the more convinced I am that solving this one problem would solve so many others. I learned that prison systems forecast future housing needs based on current 3rd grade reading levels. There is a direct link between 3rd grade reading levels and future criminal activity. Well, there is also a relationship between childhood hunger and the ability to learn. Brain development is the last place nutrition goes. So the FIT backpacks don’t just stave off immediate hunger pangs; they contribute to the child’s development and their potential for success later in life. Amazing stuff!”

- Becky Johnson, JLA Active member,

“The opportunity to work with so many amazing women, who I would not normally have a chance to know outside the League, has been inspiring. But that is true for any in-league placement! FIT in particular, has encouraged me to learn so much about the issues surrounding hunger and food insecurity. It has really expanded my perspective on a lot of things. I am so passionate now about a topic I knew nothing about three years ago. And of course FIT is full of ‘warm fuzzies.’ It is a very personally rewarding program. I love getting to see the kids!”

Playhouse Singers practice at headquarters before they go out in the community.

Playhouse Singers What does Playhouse Singers do for the community? “Our group makes the rounds at many of the nursing care facilities, assisted living communities, Alzheimers care units, and hospice facilities around Austin, and performs older music that feels familiar and generally appeals to the residents. We like to think we’re brightening up the day of our audience! Frequently, we have audience members singing along with us and sometimes even get up and dance. It’s really a pleasure to see how enthusiastically people respond to music.”

What does Playhouse Singers do for you? “This is my second year with the Playhouse Singers, and it gives me the opportunity to indulge both my love of performance and my drive to make a tangible difference in our wonderful community. The Playhouse Singers is a really unique placement, though. The vast majority of our group is Sustaining members of The Junior League of Austin. My favorite thing about this placement is that I’ve gotten a chance to get to know many of these Sustainers. I think it’s pretty special to rub elbows with some of the women who have made our League what it is today.”

- Anna Hullum, JLA Active member, Playhouse Singers Chair

An Interview with Cat Mattingly, FIT Chair By S tac y M at h er

Kirsten Moody, Jessica Watts, and Jenny Baldwin participate in the Spanish Immersion program each Monday evening.

Spanish Immersion What does Spanish Immersion do for the community? “Spanish Immersion brings women into the community who are committed to providing services that our community needs. Not only must they train in language skills, they must also learn to provide the specific services of their community agency. Completing this placement requires dedication, and I applaud all of the women involved.”

What does Spanish Immersion do for you? “Spanish Immersion is a project that exemplifies what The Junior League of Austin does best: providing training for women to serve their community. Spanish Immersion is a unique placement that gives women the language skills needed to better serve in our community agencies.”

- Katie Turner, JLA Active member, Spanish Immersion Chair

Stefanie Boyle volunteers with the Sustainable Food Center at the Triangle.

Sustainable Food Center What does Sustainable Food Center do for the community? “The Sustainable Food Center (SFC) is a wonderful resource for our community. From cooking and nutrition classes to increased access to locally grown food, the SFC is helping our community better understand the benefits of locally-grown food.”

What does Sustainable Food Center do for you? “I enjoy cooking and am always interested in learning more about locally-grown food. Working with SFC has helped me to better understand and connect with local farmers and their food. Volunteering at the SFC Farmer’s Market has been very exciting, because it’s such a vibrant community. It’s filled with regular shoppers who know the farmers by first name and people who are just learning about the market.”

- Stefanie Bertram, JLA Active member, Sustainable Food Center Chair

Cat Mattingly, FIT Chair

What are your goals as Food in Tummies (FIT) Chair for the program this year? I’m inheriting a very well-run program. There are a few minor tweaks I’d like to make, but my main goals are to make FIT a meaningful experience for the Provisionals and to expand the education components both with the students we serve and among League members. The more I learn about the issue of food insecurity, the more passionate I become about the topic.

What has been your most meaningful experience with FIT thus far? Seeing the kids at the pep rallies and special events. I wish it could all be that warm and fuzzy. Also, the leadership at the schools is really inspiring. The principals and teachers are so dedicated, talented, and engaged with their students. I love seeing them in action.

What is one “fun fact” that you would like to share about yourself? I LOVE rodeos, especially bull riding.

What likes/dislikes would you like to share about yourself? Things I like: the scenic route, strawberries, honeybees, dusk, and the sound of a screen door slamming. Things I do not like: traffic, feeling rushed, and chalkboards.

Moving On Up

The Junior League of Austin volunteers share their talents, and pick up a few new ones along the way | By B et h I vers The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is an organization filled with dedicated women who are committed to making their community a better place. In 2013 alone, the organization will invest more than $780,000 and 100,000 volunteer hours back into the Austin community. Yet, as the many women who have devoted their time and energy to The Junior League of Austin over the last 80 years know, women typically gain as much, if not more, than they give through their membership experience. “In 30 years as a member of The Junior League of Austin, and through a variety of leadership roles, from Project Chair to President, I can truly say that I earned my MBA from the JLA,” Sustaining member Libby Malone said. What many people outside of The Junior League of Austin may not realize is that Ms. Malone’s experience is not unique. In fact, countless women have their own personal stories of how their experience serving in the JLA has developed them personally and professionally in much the same way as their careers. “The JLA has been more than a volunteer opportunity for me,” Sustainer Rosemary Wynn said. ”It really is a business, with structure and organization unlike any other entity I have ever been involved with. We change jobs every year and learn different roles which is something you rarely get in a work environment.” The roles Ms. Wynn assumed stretched her to perform tasks outside her personal comfort zone including forcing her to face one of her greatest fears - speaking publicly. “I felt great after speaking at leadership training and was so glad that I had been given the opportunity to face my fears,” Ms.Wynn said.

At work, I solve physical and spatial puzzles. In the League, I get to work with relationship and people puzzles. - Camille Jobe, JLA Active member

Public speaking is just one example of a growth experience through The Junior League of Austin. Sitting on a non-profit board, liaising with vendors, chairing and leading committees of other members, fundraising and budgeting are just some of the duties members say they have been asked to perform through their Junior League placements. “Members will grow both personally and professionally through the numerous placements that are offered,” Active Fallon Gaskamp said. “With leadership roles that are as diverse as Vice President of Financial Development and Social Media Chair to serving as a Project Chair and managing the League volunteers for another non-profit organization, the opportunities for development are endless, and members are often asked to take on roles outside of their experience. As Camille Jobe said, “Right now, I am serving as the Membership Development VP. That’s kind of like being in the HR department of a 2,400 person firm. It’s not something that I have ever done before or even thought I would do well.” However, just as many companies ask star performers to take on growth assignments, members of the League’s leadership team asked her to take on this position. Though she is trained and works professionally as an architect, she says she actually loves her role in The Junior League of Austin. “At work, I solve physical and spatial puzzles. In the League, I get to work with relationship and people puzzles.” Frequently, the personal growth and development members receive through the League leads to new opportunities. For Marilyn Willson, “It was through JLA and the opportunities that it afforded me that I was able to develop my passion for helping others into a career which I love.” Ms. Willson transitioned from being a teacher into the Development Director for The Settlement Home for Children where she is responsible for all aspects of community fundraising, special events, communications, branding, and donor development for an agency with 85 full-time employees and an annual budget greater than $4.5 million. Though not every member’s experience leads to a career change, the League typically gives a personal gift to each of the women who becomes a member. For Ms. Wynn, “It made me feel valued and gave me a sense of accomplishment that I don’t think I could have found anywhere else.”

An Affair to Remember

Founding committee member Nancy Wade reflects on the history of A Christmas Affair | By

B et h I vers

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the premiere of The Junior League of Austin’s A Christmas Affair. One of the sustaining advisors for this year’s event, Nancy Wade was part of the organizing committee for the original A Christmas Affair. She said, “A Christmas Affair has grown since that first year, but the elegance and creativity were present from the very beginning.” According to Ms. Wade, the idea to organize A Christmas Affair came from a member who had been to a similar event in Washington, D.C. There were five women on the original committee, and Ann Carlson was the chair. These members began planning in late winter of 1976 in their living rooms and dining rooms. At the beginning of the summer, they sent out a letter to the Austin business community to solicit sponsors; the letters opened with “The Junior League of Austin wants to have an affair with you!” The first merchant to turn in a contract was Charles Sykes, who owned children’s clothing store Bo Peep. Ultimately, there were 41 merchants, including 17 retailers from outside Austin. There was even a caviar dealer from New York City! Nancy Wade, A Christmas Affair founding committee member

The event was held at the Driskill Hotel. “It was beautifully decorated” Ms. Wade said, “We borrowed doves from Mrs. Shivers (the governor’s wife) that were in cages on the posts upstairs, and at one point, one of the doves got out!” There were berries and garlands and sparkle. The ornament for sale was a needlepoint that members had made. A Christmas Affair opened its doors on Tuesday night with a preview party and continued through Saturday. There were style shows, a tea, and a children’s choir performance. Tickets at the door cost $2. Approximately $35,000 was raised, which was more than the League had ever raised before. And so A Christmas Affair began. Ms. Wade has watched A Christmas Affair become a tradition in the Austin community over the years. Countless families share the event just as she does with her daughters. “We’ve done this for years,” Ms. Wade said. ”My daughter-in-law comes in from The Woodlands to meet my daughter and me, and we go to the brunch with at least one friend, sometimes more. We have a process and are very organized about how we shop! It takes us the entire day!” This year will be the third time that Ms. Wade has served as a sustaining advisor on the A Christmas Affair Committee. She loves the creativity of the event, “Each new committee comes in with new ideas and tries to make things extra special for the community.”

Ms. Wade has watched A Christmas Affair become a tradition in the Austin community over the years. Countless families share the event just as she and her daughters do.

Volunteering Out Loud

-Lilly Cueto, JLA member

The Junior League of Austin volunteers work with nearly 600 students each year at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired B y miss y s h arpe It wasn’t long after Texas became a state that the legislature decided it was important to have a school for blind students. The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) opened its doors in 1856 and ever since has made its students feel welcome with educational opportunities that serve their unique needs. For 14 years, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has also helped make a difference for those students. During the school year, 160 students from all over the state come to Austin to learn at TSBVI. Through supplemental programs, they help around 450 more. Students range from age 6 to age 21 and learn, not only typical classroom material, but also how to function in community situations. They live on campus during the school week, but they head back home on the weekends so they are not away from family and friends too long. Buses take students back to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio on Friday afternoons, and they return Sunday evenings. Students even fly back to El Paso each weekend. “It’s important to not be away from home too much for the students to keep those relationships in their local community,”

18

|

www.jlaustin.org

Gloria Bennett, Director of Community Resources for TSBVI, said. “Here they learn social skills so when they return home to their friends and families, they have more confidence.” TSBVI prides itself on being the resource for everything that goes on for the blind and visually impaired across the state. The students have a huge range of abilities, from visual to cognitive. Some students have sight but not peripheral vision and others are unable to read small print. Other students, many of whom are preparing to be college bound, are overcoming cognitive challenges. Each of the students at TSBVI benefit from The Junior League of Austin’s help. The 15 JLA volunteers empower students to use their imaginations and explore stories through reading. A lack of books is not a deterrent, as the volunteers record their voices reading library books and transcribe Braille books. “When I was a Provisional I saw the whole explanation of what volunteers do here, and I really wanted to be involved,” JLA volunteer Dana Walters said. “I loved the idea of taking a book and translating it into Braille.”

Lilly Cueto is currently the Spanish Audio/ Recorder, and it’s her second year with the placement. Nearly one third of the population at TSBVI is Spanish speaking. “Spanish speakers make up such a large portion of our population and that is reflected at TSBVI,” Ms. Cueto said. “It’s my pleasure to not only practice MY Spanish at the school, but to take pride in providing a service to these children, who might not otherwise have access to the literature provided.” In April of 2013, TSBVI unveiled their beautiful new campus. While it remains in the same location, nearly all the buildings on the campus were rebuilt and updated over the last four years. “The facility, truly remarkable amenities, and resources are second to none,” Ms. Cueto said. “To give some perspective, my tour included a couple working for our counterparts in California and they were awestruck by our school. We can all be grateful for the resources Texas provides for children throughout our communities with access to this campus and the committed folks that staff it.”

The ARC of the Arts

Changing lives and building community through creative expression | By L isa ken y on The Junior League of Austin (JLA) members gain rewarding experiences by addressing the needs of an often under-served part of the Austin community by volunteering at The Arc of the Arts (The Arc). The program was launched in 2008 by The Arc of the Capital Area, a non-profit organization committed to fostering the independence and social well being of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of the Arts is dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive environment for ages 14 and up to learn, create, and engage through art. The Arc runs a design studio and gallery. Volunteers from the professional arts community provide classes in many mediums, from fine arts and music to movie making and animation. The student artists exhibit their current work at The Cool Art Gallery, which is open to the public. JLA members volunteer their time and talents throughout the year in three areas: art classes, the gallery, and public relations. Art Class Volunteers work with the artists in the classroom to provide encouragement and general assistance on projects. Gallery Volunteers assist the artists to show and sell their work in the gallery and storefront. They also help set up outside shows such as the annual “Building Bridges” Art Celebration and Gala. The fundraiser is held every fall, with proceeds benefiting The Arc of the Capital Area’s essential services. Public Relations Volunteers work to increase community awareness of The Arc’s events through various mediums. Gallery and PR Volunteers may also help in the classroom. Nancy Nicolas, a third-year Active JLA member, is Project Chair for The Arc, as well as a PR Volunteer. Ms. Nicolas chose to volunteer in the art studio during her first shift “to feel more connected to the agency and understand their mission better.” Ms. Nicolas sees how empowering the program is for the artists. Along with

teaching creative arts, The Arc provides an environment to work on interpersonal and jobs skills. For example, each class begins with “check-in,” where the artists participate in a group discussion about what they did during the week. “I feel like it’s a very unique thing,” Ms. Nicolas said. “I’m already feeling like I’m helping people.” Jessica Corna, in her fourth active JLA year, is an Art Class Volunteer. Ms. Corna assists artists with laying out storybooks. In an upcoming lesson, they will complete the process by learning bookbinding. Tasks change from week to week, enabling the artists to develop social, creative, and marketable skills, growing their self-esteem as a part of a community. Ms. Corna sees the benefit of the program for their families as well, knowing that they can challenge themselves in a safe environment. For Ms. Corna, The Arc is also having a personal impact. “I think for me, it makes me take things for granted a little bit less and I’m hoping maybe it even makes me a little bit better artist, because the things they are making are far and away better than anything I could do,” Ms. Corna said. The Junior League of Austin members are able to make a real and lasting impact at The Arc. According to The Arc of the Capital Area Development and Volunteer Coordinator Grace Alrutz, “the beautiful artwork created is just one of the many side effects of the program,” and the experiences gained “give our artists a sense of purpose and allow them to express themselves visually and verbally.” Ms. Alrutz shares that JLA involvement helps to increase community awareness and that volunteers’ efforts facilitating classes and mentoring artists help to change people’s lives. Medicine From Moms

The Junior League of Austin helps local milk bank save the lives of preemie babies | By miss y S h arpe For any new baby, mother’s milk is a powerful prescription. However, for preemie babies, it’s their miracle medicine. Thanks to Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin’s donations, those babies can get their life-saving dose. For every donor willing to donate 100 ounces, it means 300 meals for preterm babies.

The Junior League of Austin volunteers help with Mothers’ Milk Bank by doing everything from pasteurizing the milk to packing milk to picking up donated milk at mothers’ houses. Throughout the year, each volunteer spends 50 hours making a difference in the lives of new babies.

One Austin Junior League volunteer knows first hand what it means to donate. Katie Talkington went into labor with her twins in January 2012, four months before her due date. Her daughter, Emma Kate, was only able to survive for a short time after she was born. Her son, Trenton, was born four days later and Ms. Talkington quickly learned breast milk was essential in fighting for his life. Thankfully she was able to produce milk on her own, unlike many new mothers who give birth to preemie babies. She first heard about Mothers’ Milk Bank at the hospital and knew about the shortage of donated milk.

“Public health is a responsibility we share,” Project Chair Amanda Adams said. “Few people realize the huge impact we have on our local community when we support the families who provide and who need breast milk. Donated breast milk literally saves lives.”

“When I got home, I realized I had an abundance of milk to not only give Trenton, but also to donate to Mothers’ Milk Bank,” Ms. Talkington said. Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin was more than grateful, of course, for her steady donations that continued for months, even after Trenton came home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). When it was time for her to pick a placement for this year, it was a no-brainer that helping out there would be a good fit for her. “As a Milk Bank donor and mom of a NICU graduate, I have really enjoyed seeing the other side of the bank,” Ms. Talkington said. “We have a lot of friends who have used donor milk, so the processing of the milk is very interesting to me. I have enjoyed learning every step from picking up from donors all the way to dropping it off and shipping to the NICUs.” Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin is always in need of milk donors. The highest priority for milk donations is given to premature and ill hospitalized infants. The babies can get an intestinal disease without breast milk. Their mothers are not able to produce enough or any milk to help save their babies, so they get the help they need through donations.

Getting Technical

Connecting the critical components of the League Gone are the days of dot matrix printers and mass mailings. Technology allows The Junior League of Austin (JLA) to better serve the community, and how we use it has evolved greatly over the past decade. Today, the JLA employs a fully-integrated enterprise system through Digital Cheetah, and an array of communications platforms. JLA members fill a number of dedicated roles behind the scenes in support of the technology. The Technology and Social Media committees are the primary support for JLA’s technology and communication needs. According to Technology Chair Hadley Hempel, “We rely on technology to get the day-to-day work of the League done in the most efficient way possible.” Committee chairs provide direction and oversight and work closely with their teams to perform a variety of tasks throughout the year. From creating GroupShare accounts to updating web pages, they work together with the League to ensure all councils and committees can manage responsibilities.

| By LI S A K E N Y O N

“An accessible online presence serves as an invaluable advertisement, reaching our incredibly diverse public audience,” Social Media Coordinator Jeni McArthur Lowry said. Ms. McArthur Lowry points to recent Instagram posts of JLA volunteers sorting inventory at Austin Smiles and Dress for Success as examples of advertising. Proper communication is vital for the League to achieve its goals. As Social Media Coordinator, Sara Thurston wisely notes, “Staying connected is essential.” The JLA of today must fulfill diverse and indispensable roles to meet the needs of its members and the community. The women who serve in these roles are an essential component of the League’s successful functioning day to day, and year after year, and will continue to incorporate new technologies to better realize the mission of The Junior League of Austin.

Technology Liaisons contribute an exceptional amount of support for League activities, providing direct services to their assigned councils and committees. They juggle numerous responsibilities including updating the JLA website, creating shifts in Digital Cheetah, and troubleshooting technical problems. Liaisons coordinate their efforts and communicate effectively to make any new work or system changes run seamlessly. Food in Tummies (FIT) Scheduler and Liaison Bec Powell manages the schedule and technology needs for 335 Provisional and Active members. “There are so many moving parts. The more organized it is, the easier it is for the League and everyone who is a part of FIT,” Ms. Powell said. Technology Liaisons also fill specific roles for special projects and events. Technology’s Assistant to the Chair Courtney Van Biene is developing a new landing page for the JLA website in celebration of the League’s 80th anniversary, and dedicated Project Managers drive the technology for JLA’s signature fall events, A Christmas Affair (ACA) and Coats for Kids (CFK). They are responsible for all facets of technology for the events. “From the start of the merchant application process to managing real-time event logistics, the technology must function successfully because ACA is the League’s largest fundraiser,” ACA Project Manager, Carissa Kell said. “Similarly, CFK requires accurate tracking of all program information to properly service the need for warm winter coats for children and teenagers in Central Texas. CFK Project Manager Abby Raines furthers Ms. Kell’s notion with a reminder that as the community and JLA become larger, “It is imperative that technology roles exist to make things function.” Several of these important roles in technology inform and engage JLA membership, community partners, and the public. Communication tools such as the web, email, and various social media are all utilized for this purpose. Social Media Chair Cynthia Mattiza ensures the League’s communication is outward facing to not only communicate with the League but with the community as well. Ms. Mattiza’s goal is to promote events and milestones, and to encourage members to engage socially online. Social Media Coordinators communicate League information on a weekly, daily, and sometimes up-to-the-minute basis.

On behalf of The Junior League of Austin, welcome to Winter Wonderland - where we highlight the elegance and beauty of winter and celebrate the wonder of the impact The Junior League of Austin is able to make in our community. The holiday season is a wonderful time of year for the League, not only for the renewed commitment to our own families, but also because of the opportunity the season presents to us as an organization. Proceeds from A Christmas Affair (ACA) directly benefit our Central Texas community, supporting more than 25 area non-profits with financial resources and trained volunteers each year. As the Chair of this year’s A Christmas Affair, I would like to thank the fabulous women on the ACA Committee who have contributed thousands of hours to ensure our event’s success. It has truly been an honor to serve with such a talented and committed group of individuals. I continue to be amazed by the strength and character of our Junior League volunteer force. I would also like to extend my appreciation to our generous sponsors for their financial contributions which enable our vision of a world-class holiday market to become a reality. And a final thank you to the greater Austin community for your support of this uniquely Austin tradition. We look forward to celebrating our 38th A Christmas Affair with you at Winter Wonderland. Thank You To Our Donors The Junior League of Austin thanks the following donors for their support of our charitable work in the community. League volunteers serve the community through well-known programs such as Coats for Kids, and also in partnership with non-profit agencies, increasing their capacity with our members as a volunteer workforce. With every dollar raised for community programs, the League triples its impact when combined with the commitment of our trained volunteers. For example: • With $2,000, the League will provide a week of activities for children with diabetes while providing education about managing their illness. Our volunteers will be Camp Group Leaders. • With $500, the League will support a Girl Scout troop, which serves girls and their incarcerated mothers. Our volunteers will be Troop Assistants. • With $80, our FIT - Food in Tummies volunteers will feed a hungry child weekend meals for a school semester. • With $45, warm winter coats will be purchased for three children. Our volunteers will fit those children and their new coats at Coats for Kids. These are only a few of the ways The Junior League of Austin impacts our community. Thank you again to all our donors!

from The sustaining President On behalf of the more than 1,200 Sustaining Members of The Junior League of Austin, we are thrilled to be a part of this year’s A Christmas Affair, Winter Wonderland, and grateful to Austin for its many years of supporting our impact in the community. As Sustaining members, we are proud of the many ways the League is growing and evolving to meet the changing needs of Austin and of our own members. We believe we are part of a very positive force in our city — from Coats for Kids, to FIT - Food in Tummies , to our many partnerships with community-based organizations such as the Austin Children’s Museum, CASA of Travis County, Con Mi MADRE, and Mobile Loaves and Fishes. The impact of the League’s work is broad: feeding and clothing people who are struggling to meet their basic needs, empowering women and children who are victims of violence, mentoring youth toward college, and enriching this city through arts and environmental education. Your participation in A Christmas Affair enables the JLA to continue to make this powerful impact, and for that, imagine 1,200 women saying, “Thank you!”

Fun facts from behind the scenes at A Christmas Affair •

Over 200 merchants from across the country and more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the 2013 A Christmas Affair (ACA).

Last year, 117 merchant trucks, trailers and vans were expertly parked, on average, less than two inches apart by the Traffic and Security Team in the service yard of Palmer Events. Space is a precious commodity in the service yard!

The ACA Committee spends more than a combined total of 5,000 hours at Palmer Events Center the week of A Christmas Affair.

Nancy Wade, a 2013 ACA Sustaining Advisor, was on the first ACA Committee in 1976.

The main Christmas tree is 25 feet tall, has 10,800 lights, and is adorned with 3,000 ornaments.

At this year’s event, over 200 pounds of shrimp, eight gallons of hummus, more than 1800 cupcakes, and about 25 gallons of dressing will be served. In addition, this year all tearoom meals will be served on china!

Several participating merchants’ sales will benefit local and regional non-profit organizations including Open Arms and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Children’s Art Project. One group of high school students is selling monogrammed school supplies to raise money for local charities.

The Merchant Committee will start work in December to prepare for the 2014 event!
