I recently finished reading The Power of Moments. In the book, authors Chip and Dan Heath propose that our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride and connection. They believe that by understanding how these elements work together we can be more intentional in creating more memorable experiences. While thinking through this concept, it dawned on me that The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has mastered the art of authoring rich experiences to promote happiness and do good in our community. Through its acclaimed event and fundraiser, A Christmas Affair (ACA), The Junior League of Austin delivers an elevated holiday shopping experience that draws thousands of guests each year and raises more than $700,000 to invest in community programs. On page 30, Capitalines offers readers a behind-the-scenes look into how the ACA Committee carefully crafts each part of the event to make it memorable for all who attend. This article takes readers through the evolution of the Joyeux Noël theme showcasing how dedicated and talented volunteers have established an Austin holiday tradition. On page 24, you will read how a moment of insight from her experience in the League inspired sustainer MariBen Ramsey to chart a new career path from attorney to advocate for Austin non-profits. Through Austin Community Foundation, she has helped spawn and grow some of Austin’s most notable and impactful non-profit organizations.

The Junior League of Austin has mastered the art of authoring rich experiences and using them to promote happiness and do good in our community.

The League’s newest signature program, KICS - Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS), was thoughtfully designed to create moments of connection between volunteers and students. When JLA volunteers and KICS sponsors participate in delivery day at a local elementary school they are able to experience the joy of kids receiving a new pair of sneakers. The pride shown by these excited youngsters as they show off their new shoes is a heart warming experience. Check out page 16 to hear what’s next for KICS. The pages of this magazine are filled with examples of people crafting and experiencing memorable moments. By continuing to master and practice this art, the League has become a catalyst for creating leaders and improving the Austin community.

PRESIDENT The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has been promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers since 1934. JLA is one of the five largest Junior Leagues in the world, with over 2,500 volunteers, and we continue to grow. As we prepare to celebrate our 85th anniversary next spring, we continue to expand our impact in Austin. Our members will volunteer 160,000 hours this year through partnerships with over 30 non-profits. We will distribute more than 30,000 coats through our Coats for Kids program in December, and with our FIT - Food in Tummies Program we will deliver 47,000 backpacks of food to elementary schools in Dell Valle. In addition, we are implementing a new program, KICS - Kids in Cool Shoes, where we work with corporate partners and the Rundberg community to distribute new tennis shoes to schools in the area.

We are also building our new home, the Community Impact Center, which will provide Austin another high-impact solution to meet community needs by offering a place where members can come together in partnership with community leaders to address pressing issues. The Junior League of Austin welcomes all women who value our mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of individuals, organizations and communities. We are women building community.

Why the League Needed a New Logo As The Junior League of Austin continues to grow and evolve, so must our brand. By: Grace Young

T

hrough the process of planning for The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) new headquarters – the Community Impact Center – the JLA’s leadership decided that a branding update was an important priority.

“For many people, the logo is their first glimpse into The Junior League of Austin. Who we were in the early 90s, when our previous logo was created, is in many ways different than who we are today,” said Liz Neff, 2017-2018 Committee Coordinator for the Community Impact Center Planning & Oversight Committee. “With a diverse membership, we needed a new logo that better represented our modern organization.” In use since the early 1990s, the old logo could be difficult to read in certain formats as the font sizes made it difficult to scale. Additionally, since the last logo was designed, technology has progressed and so it is used much more frequently and in a wider variety of both print and digital formats than it was in the past.

12  The Junior League of Austin

The committee for rebranding was made up of four members who serve in communications leadership roles within The Junior League of Austin and three members who have extensive re-branding, design and PR experience. This intentional group

envisioned a logo that would better work with today’s technology and that would be bold and bright, like the League’s membership and mission. The rebranding process began by hiring a design firm. The committee knew they needed the expertise of a talented firm who understood Austin as well as the Junior League. “We interviewed several branding firms to see who best understood the League and what we stand for,” said Neff.

The new official logo of The Junior League of Austin.

After interviewing several potential vendors, the committee hired Austin-based design firm Asterisk.

“Asterisk’s presentation was by far the most fun, and they knew the most about the League and the impact we have in the city,” said Neff. Asterisk and the committee set to work to design a logo that exemplified the League’s past and present membership in December 2017. They had six main criteria for the new logo: First, they wanted it to be simplified and timeless. Second, they envisioned something feminine and strong. Third, the logo needed to Page Sponsored by Jay and D.Ann Shiffler

speak to everyone in the Austin community, including current members, potential members, donors, non-profit partners, and beyond. Fourth, the logo should embody a League that welcomes diversity. Fifth, it should demonstrate that we are capable women. And, finally, the logo needed to work in many different mediums and communicate strength, impact and community. The committee worked closely with Asterisk to make sure the new logo met these goals. “There was a lot of thought and research that went into the fonts and colors we chose,” said Neff. It took until May of 2018 to arrive at a final product, but the time spent was well worth it. The new logo is simple, strong and bright, like JLA’s members and mission. It also exemplifies the League’s new tagline: “Women Building Community,” that JLA members voted to adopt. “These changes are more inclusive, more engaging and make our mission more clear,” Neff explained.

The Junior League of Austin debuted its new logo at a meeting in April of 2018. Pictured from left: Amy Hurt, Sharon Morgan, Nicole Elliott and Jennifer O’Connor.

“It’s the committee’s hope that the new logo and the new building will help the League expand our reach in the community,” says Neff. “The more recognition we can get for the League, the better. More recognition means more resources, and more resources means a bigger impact we can have on our community.”

Summer Day Camp Empowers Children with Diabetes Camp Bluebonnet serves children with diabetes, helping them to manage their conditions and have fun. By: Megan Nyitray

S

ince 2003, the Children’s Diabetes Camp of Central Texas has been providing a safe place for children with diabetes and their siblings to come and enjoy just being a kid at Camp Bluebonnet. Camp Bluebonnet is the longest running program of the Children’s Diabetes Camp of Central Texas and is designed to help those affected by diabetes lend support to one another, learn effective diabetes management tools and coping strategies and have fun. The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has supported Camp Bluebonnet volunteers since 2003. The camp relies largely on volunteers who often have a personal connection to diabetes themselves, but experience with diabetes is not a prerequisite to volunteer. Junior League volunteers exhibit their talents in many ways by filling both camp

counselor and medical staff positions at Camp Bluebonnet. This summer Junior League member Kirsten Atkinson spent a week volunteering as a camp counselor. She was recently diagnosed with Type I Diabetes and can attest to how frightening it can be to embark on a journey when you do not know anyone else facing the same challenges. She can also speak personally about the positive impact Camp Bluebonnet has on families coping with a new reality of managing diabetes. “When you are first diagnosed you feel so Page Sponsored by Christie Finnigan

alone,” says Atkinson, “I cannot imagine what it feels like to be a kid going through this. But going to Camp Bluebonnet and seeing how strong these kids are at such a young age puts me at a loss for words. It makes me feel like if these kids can do this everyday, so can I.”

“Seeing how strong these kids are at such a young age puts me at a loss for words.”

Camp Bluebonnet provides time each day to educate campers about diabetes and how to handle tough situations that may arise with those unfamiliar with their condition, empowering them to feel confident once they leave camp.

Other than the occasional break to take medication, the camp operates just like any other summer camp with activities like ropes courses, rock climbing, archery, pool time, water slides and arts and crafts. Not only do the campers leave with new, life long friendships, but so do parents and staff. Camp Bluebonnet is truly creating a community in Central Texas where anyone affected by diabetes is welcome, understood and part of a supportive network. What’s Next for KICS? The Junior League of Austin promotes Kids in Cool Shoes - KICS from a pilot to signature program. By: Keri Bollman

L

ast year, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) piloted KICS – Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS), a program that aims to outfit elementary age kids in new sneakers. The pilot was an enormous success, and last spring the JLA was able to donate over 650 pairs of sneakers to students at Guerrero-Thompson Elementary School in North Austin. With the success of the pilot, the JLA decided to expand the program, transforming it from a special project led by League volunteers Courtney Clark and Laura Robinson, to a signature program. KICS is now an official JLA program and has its own committee composed of

16  The Junior League of Austin

eleven dedicated volunteers. They are currently focused on garnering community sponsorships, engaging volunteers, gathering donations and spreading the word about the program. This year, KICS chair Courtney Clark and her committee are planning to expand KICS to other high-need schools and daycares. They plan to do this through a model that hasn’t been tried before by the JLA. The proposed model allows for an organization, business or individual to sponsor a KICS school by donating money for the purchase of shoes. They will then be invited to participate in distribution day, which gives them

and their employees the opportunity to see first hand the dollars they have donated. “We wanted to provide a new, unique way for the community to see and experience what the League does, and see how their dollars are being put to work,” says Clark. Clark said she feels that this may serve to spark interest in joining the League amongst non-JLA member volunteers and will help to diversify membership as well. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring a KICS school or daycare, please contact KICS@jlaustin.org.

A Sneak Peek Inside the Community Impact Center By: Keri Bollman

T

he Junior League of Austin (JLA) is currently under construction on its new headquarters – the Community Impact Center (CIC). Designed by Austin-based architecture firm STG Design, the CIC will feature a modern Hill Country design and a layout that will serve both the JLA and the community. While many people have seen the renderings for the new buildings, only a handful of dedicated stakeholders have seen the plans for inside. In the pages that follow we’ll take you inside the new headquarters and offer up a sneak peek of the new facility.

FIRST FLOOR The lower level of the Community Impact Center was designed to be used by both The Junior League of Austin as well as the community. It will be used for internal events as well as community events, fundraisers and more. The League will also rent out spaces within the CIC to help generate revenue.

SIGNATURE PROGRAMS ROOM

The signature programs room is the first thing visitors see. It has large windows, so everyone who enters the building will be able to see the work of FIT Food in Tummies and KICS - Kids in Cool Shoes being done inside. It was designed specifically to service these programs, so it features a laundry room that will be used to wash FIT bags as well as an adjacent loading dock to facilitate the stocking of pantry items and shoes.

22  The Junior League of Austin

2

COMMUNITY ROOM

The community event room is a multi-function banquet and auditorium space that can be used for JLA or community events, from focus groups and meetings to galas or weddings. “It was designed to serve the entire community,” says Jamille Ruebsahm, Capital Campaign Coordinator. The community room has a seated capacity of 440, and it can be utilized as one big room or split into three smaller rooms, depending on the need. The room will feature audiovisual capabilities for meetings and events. Adjacent to the room is a prep area to facilitate catering.

3

THE LAWN

Bordering the community room is an outdoor deck that overlooks The Lawn. The Lawn is an outdoor space nestled under a canopy of live oak trees. The property itself backs up to the greenbelt and will feature a nature trail with a pollinator garden and bat houses to help with the City of Austin’s desire to bring more wildlife to the grounds as a habitat steward.

4

SUSTAINER LOUNGE

Through member surveys and interviews, the committee learned that many sustaining members – women who have reached the age limit for Active membership – felt that they didn’t have a space to congregate at the current JLA Headquarters. The new sustainer lounge will showcase Hill Country views and will feature a kitchenette, dining area and a lounge with a television. The space was designed to create a welcoming space that will help foster relationships between all members.

5

OFFICES AND MEETING ROOMS

The upper level features various dedicated offices for JLA staff and volunteers as well as breakout spaces and meeting rooms. Additionally, there will be dedicated areas for Coats for Kids and the League’s fundraising events.

6

WORKROOMS AND STORAGE

Based on member feedback, the CIC was designed with storage space. It will also feature a workroom with ample room for production of new items needed for programs.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Community Impact Center is available to rent for community groups and events, and is already booking for 2019. For information, please email cicevents@jlaustin.org.

SECOND FLOOR The upper level was designed for internal use by the JLA, including office support. The CIC Committee and architects spent countless hours interviewing leadership and members to identify the most desired features and how to make best use of the space.

LEGACY

Sustainer Spotlight

MEET

MARIBEN A Q&A with The Junior League of Austin Sustainer MariBen Ramsey By: Megan Nyitray

How have your experiences in The Junior League of Austin influenced other aspects of your life? My work with the JLA not only changed my life, it completely changed my career. In 1995, I was a practicing attorney. My experience researching and volunteering with multiple non-profit organizations in the Austin area with The Junior League of Austin led me to realize I wanted to do something other than practice law. I wanted to do something in the community; where my true passion was. I ended up working for Austin Community Foundation for 20 years. Austin Community Foundation connects local donors with local causes, simplifying giving while multiplying impact.

M

ariBen Ramsey has set the bar high for many members of The Junior League of Austin (JLA) and Junior Leagues all over the world. She has served as President-Elect, President and Sustaining President of The Junior League of Austin and served two terms on the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Board, inspiring many with her dedication to community, learning and volunteering through all levels of membership. In addition to her leadership in the League, MariBen has also shared her talents with many non-profit organizations across the nation. She continues to set an example of selfless leadership through her continued support of and dedication towards advancing non-profits and improving communities.

24  The Junior League of Austin

I was the third person on staff at Austin Community Foundation. I spent those years working with non-profit organizations reviewing grants and helping them figure out what they could use funding for to improve the quality of life for Central Texans. This career change enabled me to live out my passion for volunteering in the community. I have been able to take the skills I’ve learned in The Junior League of Austin and use them to grow non-profits around the nation.

You also served on the AJLI board. Did that bring any unique insights? I served on the AJLI Board for two terms. Working on the board of AJLI has taken me around the world — from Mexico City, to India and all across the United States. Through this travel I got to experience first hand the amazing work that Junior Leagues are doing across the world, even in the smallest of communities.

MariBen Ramsey speaking at the groundbreaking for The Junior League of Austin’s new headquarters, the Community Impact Center.

The League has a major emphasis on training. Are there any skills that you learned through the League that have helped you professionally or personally? Right now I am the President of the Board of Directors for a newer non-profit called Firefly Fund. I helped set up the legal aspects of this non-profit, and I also continue to help them comply with the rules that non-profits are required to follow. I’m the rule keeper! My background in law and experiences with parliamentary procedure that I gained through my work with the League have allowed me to help new non-profits like the Firefly Fund start and grow successfully.

The League serves a diverse set of non-profits, but are there any causes that are particularly close to your heart? A lot of my work and service has been focused where my passion is: working with organizations that support and develop strong women and girls. This is a passion I really came to realize through my experiences with The Junior League of Austin. I believe women see the world differently in terms of what needs to change because they are mothers. I believe anything we can do to support the development and leadership of women and girls will help create a better society, a better Austin and a better world.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why? One of the things I’m really proud of is being a part of the creation of Palmer Events Center. Many Austinites don’t remember, but at one point The City of Austin’s plans included a new performing arts venue (now The Long Center), but no space for community groups to use for major events.

This was not only problematic for the League, who used the space to host A Christmas Affair and Coats for Kids, but also for many of our community partners and friends that relied on the space for large events such as the Helping Hand Home fundraiser and city wide garage sales. Without a dedicated space to hold these events, The JLA and many other non-profits in the area were looking at losing millions of dollars in funds raised to give straight back to the community. Ultimately, we were able to successfully lobby city council to put the proposition for the creation of Palmer Events Center on the ballot in a citywide election. With support from The Junior League of Austin and many other community non-profit organizations, the proposition passed. That is how we got the Palmer Event Center in addition to the Long Center; both are beautiful buildings that host amazing programs.

What is one thing you wish everyone in the community knew about The Junior League of Austin’s impact? Because of what the League does there are amazing things happening in Austin every single day. Women have been given the tools to make amazing things happen through the Junior League. I wish people understood the impact the League has had not only today but also in the past. If The Junior League of Austin did not exist, there would be a lot of organizations and programs that would not exist in this community such as Con Mi MADRE and FIT - Food In Tummies. You make friends, you learn skills and you build a community; that is what The Junior League of Austin is all about. The Junior League of Austin  25

LEGACY A LETTER FROM THE

SUSTAINING PRESIDENT A warm welcome for all to The Junior League of Austin’s A Christmas Affair (ACA). ACA has marked the beginning of the Austin holiday season for over 40 years. It is a fun and meaningful event that brings together old friends and new of all ages. Whether this is your first ACA or your 20th, it is a tradition you will want to share with family and friends for years to come.

For over 20 years, my husband Greg and I have enjoyed dressing up each year and attending the preview party. For 19 years, my kids growing up have been photo documented with the same Santa at the ACA Breakfast with Santa. Santa hasn’t aged a day, but those crying, red-faced babies have turned into beautiful and thoughtful young adults. Adults who look forward to catching up with Santa each year and giving back to the community themselves. ACA is a unique opportunity to shop and celebrate the season while supporting our community. The funds raised through ACA provide financial support for our non-profit community partners along with volunteer and training opportunities for our members and the community. Highlights include Coats for Kids, FIT - Food in Tummies, Con Mi MADRE, KICS - Kids in Cool Shoes as well as over 30 more community partners. You may be wondering what it means to be a Sustaining member

of The Junior League of Austin. As a Sustaining member of The Junior League of Austin our role is to continue to be ambassadors for the organization, mentors and advisors to our membership and be trained leaders and volunteers in our community. You will find us in all areas of life around Austin from the corporate board room, to city government, school boards and many of the non-profits around town. Many of us experienced our first leadership positions and gained valuable skills through our volunteer work in The League. The League gives members the opportunity to gain skills through hands-on work and leadership training that benefits the community and enhances our businesses, civic organizations and quality of life. The city and region have greatly benefited from the volunteers and training opportunities that The League provides its members and the community. Please join me in celebrating the season, enjoying new and old traditions while building a stronger community for the future of Austin.

Bringing A Christmas Affair to Life

O

ver 25,000 people kick off the holiday season with The Junior League of Austin (JLA) at the annual A Christmas Affair (ACA) event, but for the 89 volunteers who work on the JLA’s ACA Committee to put this event on, the holiday spirit lasts all year long. The League as a whole works together to bring ACA to life whether volunteers are on the committee or outside of the committee.

there on out it’s finishing touches and print deadlines,” says Crawford. “We get busy early!” There are monthly meetings for the committees to stay in touch and work together. Crawford predicts the average ACA Committee member puts in 40 hours a month leading up to the event in November. Crawford says, “It is exhiliterating to finally see everything fall into place. For me that’s exciting because this theme has been in my head for a long time, and to be able to work with other people and have them bring it to life in ways that I wouldn’t have been able to do by myself is incredible.”

Planning for the event starts over a year in advance, and is lead by the A Christmas Affair Chair. This year the ACA chair is Lyndsey Crawford. Crawford started planning as far back as January 2017. By that October she had decided on the Joyeux Noël theme and completed a full style guide for the event. In March of 2018, the rest of Crawford’s volunteers got to work. There are 16 committees that work to make the event go off without a hitch. “We try to have have everything mostly wrapped up for ACA by the end of July. From

is the Decorations Subcommittee. Behind the glitz and the glam of the ornaments, garlands, trees and decorations is this creative team of volunteers that takes the theme set forth by the ACA Chair and makes it a reality. The Decorations Subcommittee begins its work over a year in advance. In January, they visit Dallas Market to purchase decorations needed to fit their vision. Once all of the decorations have been purchased, the committee works diligently to manage delivery receivables, wire ornaments, build

ACA Decorations Co-Chair Blair Nelson says, “When large orders of decorations such as ornaments for the main tree, trees and other various decorations arrive from market, our committee gets together and unpacks everything. Then we wrap everything back and label it by color, so when all the boxes arrive at the Palmer Events Center during ACA, we know where each box will go.” The Decorations Subcommittee is usually tight lipped about their plans, but if you’re looking for a teaser as to what to expect from decorations this year, Nelson shares, “Surprisingly, there are not a lot of Eiffel Towers. We want to highlight everyone’s favorite things about France – not just Paris.”

Something you might not realize is that every decoration you see out at A Christmas Affair is available for purchase. You can help The Junior League of Austin by purchasing decorations before, during and after market. It’s all up for grabs, including the ornaments, garlands, centerpieces and maybe even a full tree! The official decorations re-sale will take place at JLA Headquarters, located at 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Suite 100, from November 30 through December 2, where you can pick up decorations you’ve already purchased or do any last minute holiday shopping. A Christmas Affair will take place at Palmer Events Center November 14-18. To purchase market day and event tickets visit jlaustin.org. The Junior League of Austin  31

Letter from the Chair

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 43rd annual Junior League of Austin (JLA) A Christmas Affair, Joyeux Noël. Join us as we shop, play and work hard to make a positive impact on the Austin community. This year, A Christmas Affair (ACA) will take you back to turn-of-the-century France for a vintage celebration of the season. We find ourselves in an era marked by great innovation, creativity and international community – the first Metro lines open in Paris, the birth of Art Nouveau, the Paris Exhibition of 1900 and the first time the summer Olympic Games are held outside of Greece. The country is in a period known as “La Belle Époque” (beautiful era), a time of optimism, elegance and progress. Walk with us down the bustling city streets, wonder at the majesty of the Tour Eiffel and maybe even take a ride on a hot air balloon… The turn of the century was also an exciting time for The Junior League. Our first charter was granted in New York City when founder Mary Harriman noticed a need in her city and felt “a responsibility for making an important contribution to the community.” The Junior League was brought to life, and over 100 years later, The Junior League of Austin continues this tradition of making an important contribution.

During this year’s A Christmas Affair we will honor the vision of our founder and showcase the League’s 30 community projects and signature programs. Come by the Pont des Arts and purchase a “tribute lock” to hang on the bridge in honor of one of our community projects or a volunteer who has inspired you. Show your support of the League’s signature program, Coats for Kids (CFK), on Saturday, November 17, as we kick off our coat drive at the Cirque de Demain. Through children’s events, parties and shopping the 200 plus merchants, the 2018 A Christmas Affair has something for everyone, and we hope you enjoy the celebration. To my committee: I have seen the countless hours, the enormous creativity and the heart you have put into A Christmas Affair. Your commitment to making a difference is inspiring. Thank you for taking this journey alongside me. To our sponsors: with your generous financial support The Junior League of Austin is able to bring our vision alive year after year and raise over $700,000 for the Austin community. Thank you for your partnership. To our guests: funds from ticket purchases and participation in our auctions and raffle go directly to help improve our community. We could not do any of this without your support. It is my hope that you will enjoy A Christmas Affair as much as I do. Together we can “make an important contribution to our community” this year and for many years to come. Joyeux Noël!
