SKYLER GREY Street Art’s Fresh Prince Words By Leland Ware

At the age of thirteen, Skyler Grey is poised to follow in the footsteps of his heroes Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The teenager from the Baldwin Hills area in Los Angeles has already shown his work globally, is selling at a minimum of $6000 per piece, and recently had an incredible response to his first solo show at Lab Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Skyler’s introduction to art came about through an unhappy accident - his mother passed away when he was only two and art therapy was used as part of the treatment to help Skyler cope with the loss. By the age of eight, his father Holman Arthurs began to notice the talent his son had. Holman began taking Skyler to art shows and noticed that he was able to recreate what he saw in sketches in the car on the way home. When asked how he was able to do so, Skyler simply responded “I remember what I saw.” Since then, Grey continued to progress his art which is defined by colorful images of pop culture icons and cartoon characters. Skyler’s prodigy status is firmly cemented and when asked about his current monicker, The Fresh Prince Of Steet Art, Skyler says this “I don’t know who’s the king, but I know that when it’s actually my time, I’m going to be the king.” With that sort of talent and confidence at such an early age, it’s obvious that Skyler Grey has a bright future ahead of him - which is exactly why we teamed up with him on this new collaboration for DGK.

Jovontae Turner is a legend in the skate game. He’s an innovator of style with both his trick selection and fashion sense. If you talk to anyone from the older generation that has been skating for a long time, Jovontae’s name will probably come up if you ask them who the most influential skaters were from their generation. Given his history as a taste maker, it really only made sense for Jovontae to brand his unique style into his own line. He did exactly that with his new venture JT&CO. Jovontae credits his personal perception of skateboarding as the major influence behind the brand–taking the stuff he grew up on and moving it forward into the future. The line has been well-received thus far and Jovontae’s presence in skateboarding was certainly missed– Tae brings some classic flavor to the scene that definitely spices things up. Given that DGK has collaborated with Jovontae in the past on a deck that re-appropriated one of his classic graphics and the close ties that Tae has with the crew; it was only right to do this DGK X JT&CO capsule collection. Tae provided the initial designs and then the DGK art department added its flavor to them–the result is an instant classic that’s highly wearable and reflects both Jovontae’s and DGK’s aesthetic perfectly.

TOM REMILLARD Going For Broke Interview By Leland Ware

Tom Remillard’s first pro graphic was a no brainer—it was obvious that we had to pay tribute to the blood, sweat, tears, and broken bones that went into him ascending into the pro ranks. In honor of the occasion, we sat down with Tom and talked about broken arms and he gave us the lowdown on his top three favorite casts of all time. I’ve broken my arm seven times now. The last time was the worst one, I dislocated seven of the bones and had to fly back from Miami to San Diego to get immediate surgery. I had to wear the cast for three months and they had to put pins in there and sew the scar up gnarly. The pins were protruding out of my hand and I had to get them removed when I healed, it was like when you set concrete and they gotta put rebar in there. It’s definitely kinda freaky. This year’s been crazy cause I broke my right one too and had to get a screw put in it. I’ve just surrendered to the pain—like “you know what, this is skateboarding… you’re going to get fucked up. Either deal, or go home.” This green one is my first cast. It’s my first memory in skateboarding, it was the first time I broke my wrist

skating. I was learning how to ollie this four stair in front of Bird Rock. I leaned too far in and I just broke it or whatever. It’s just micro and all of my friends from school signed it. It’s crazy how small it is compared to the rest of them, I was like ten years old. I guess you could say this was my introduction into breaking bones skateboarding. This white one is dope, it’s the beginning of the crooked wrist. This was the first time I dislocated my wrist and I got the little protruding bone. Sam Hitz drew on this one, he drew a New Order which was the first board company that I ever rode for—it was out of this company called Death Box. Me and my friends made this little t-shirt company called Pulvarized, my friend Zach and Alex Pearlson rode for it—we had that on here too and that makes this

one awesome, it’s got some serious skate memories attached to it. This blue one is dope! This is the one that I got after I broke my wrist during the Transworld video. The cool part about this one is that it’s signed by two of the freshest dudes ever! It’s signed by Wille D and Bushwick Bill of the Ghetto Boys—Bushwick wrote “Bushwick Bill Ghetto Boys” on there, that’s so fuckin’ sick! I like Outkast a lot and we got the opportunity to meet Big Boi and he signed it—he wrote “Big Boi Atliens.” I love this one cause it reminds me of all of the hard work I put in and good times I had filming for my Transworld part which was a big stepping stone for me getting to where I’m at now; plus we used a blue cast for my first board graphic which makes it that much more significant to me.

This issue’s Farm League update highlights Grandeur Skate Shop. Started by Jason Houk in 2006, Grandeur is located on Coast Highway at Pier View Way in the heart of Oceanside, CA. The shop sets itself apart by offering a unique selection of hardgoods and apparel that attracts kids from all over North County and even as far as San Diego to come and hang out. Houk describes it as follows, “With the people that work here and the brands we carry, it’s not like walking into a chain store—it’s more unique. The kids that are actually into this stuff feel that and like knowing that they’re not going to be wearing the same stuff as the dude that went shopping at the mall. Grandeur’s core aesthetic goes beyond just the product in the store, they do plenty to cultivate their local skate community. “We throw this thing called Skate Days,” Houk explains, “we’ll just go to a park and try to get a few of the companies that we carry to throw some product in and have a community demo where all of the kids come out to watch the local kids that rip kill it. We’ll have a best trick contest on the ledge, rail, hubba, or whatever obstacle that we think is cool or that the kids are feeling. We toss out a bunch of product, it’s always a really cool event and good time for the kids.” With a solid set of classic skate shop values firmly in place, Kayo is proud to have Grandeur as a part of our extended family.
