THE KENAI is conveniently located just south of Anchorage, and there are many options for getting here. Driving The Kenai is a popular choice, whether you are arriving in Alaska by air and renting a car or motorhome, or traveling to this great state by the Alaska Highway. Our two main roads, the Seward and Sterling Hwys., are both designated as scenic by-ways and you will find a spectacular new view around every corner. Small commuter air carriers connect Anchorage and the communities of Kenai, Soldotna and Homer, and the Alaska railroad makes daily trips from Anchorage to Seward May through September. Seward is also a popular port of call for cruise lines, you can get an up close and personal Alaskan experience by taking a land tour before or after your cruise.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough is 90% wilderness and therefore a destination of choice for Alaskan travelers who desire to observe wildlife within its natural habitat. We serve as the gateway for Alaska's best one-day flightseeing trips to view the famed Katmai and Wolverine Creek bears. The Kenai is home to one black bear per square mile. Black or brown bears may be spotted from your vehicle, from your raft as you float by, or up on the mountainside while hiking our miles of improved trails. The Kenai’s coast is one of Alaska's prime viewing areas for marine wildlife. Kenai Fjords is certainly a mecca for marine wildlife watchers, as is Kachemak Bay. Birding is world class, and many travelers time their visit to witness some of nature's special events: the migration of shorebirds in Homer or the gathering of snow geese on the Kenai River flats. Did we mention moose? Formerly known as the Kenai National Moose Range, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary that comprises approximately a third of the peninsula and provides an ideal haven for moose, lynx, wolves, dall sheep, caribou, fox, coyotes and more.

SPORTFISHING THE RUSSIAN RIVER and the confluence with the Russian and Kenai Rivers is one of the most popular bank fishing sites, providing red salmon fishing access to many anglers. The fishery is accessed either by a road into the US Forest Service’s Russian River Campground, or a ferry currently operated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, that provides Kenai-Russian River access. THE KENAI RIVER has many public access sites and private businesses along its shores in the Sterling-Soldotna-Kenai area offering bank angling access during the popular salmon runs. Many of the popular bank angling access sites offer “habitat friendly” facilities designed to protect important fish habitat along the river bank while providing for fishing access. Elevated walkways, stairways into the river and other methods protect valuable vegetation important for healthy fish habitat, ensuring that the popular runs of salmon can continue. CROOKED CREEK & THE KASILOF RIVER offers bank angling at the confluence and is one of The Kenai’s most popular and productive locations for king salmon fishing from shore. With kings ranging in size from about 20-40 pounds, they are more than a handful on rod and reel from the shore! DEEP CREEK, NINILCHIK RIVER, & ANCHOR RIVER all give great results. Bank angling on Deep Creek, the Ninilchik River and the Anchor River are all popular springtime pursuits for anglers targeting early kings. Check the fishing regulations, as these rivers are only open for fishing on certain weekends. CHARTER OPPORTUNITIES exist for fishing enthusiasts interested in rainbow and/or salmon fishing of the Kenai or Kasilof Rivers, while an extensive charter industry is available to offer halibut fishing and/or salmon fishing near the communities of Seward, Ninilchik, Anchor Point, and Homer.

KENAI’S RIVERS & LAKES
The surprising turquoise color of many of The Kenai’s rivers and lakes is very unusual and is caused by just the right blending of glacial waters and snowmelt. Just about everywhere on the Peninsula there are rivers and lakes to enjoy. Home to spawning salmon, these rivers and lakes can be explored by rafting, fishin g from drift or powerboats, or finding beautiful trails along the shores. Some of Alaska’s wildest whitewater, as well as some of its most placid and scenic waterways, can be found on The Kenai. The Kenai River and its network of lakes and tributaries extend from virtually the eastern edge to the western shore. Canoe fans world wide travel to The Kenai to portage and paddle the 150 miles of canoe trails of the Swanson River system. The quaint settlement s of Moose Pass and Cooper Landing, along with the larger communities of Sterling, Soldo tna, and Kenai, owe a substantial portion of their livelihoods to the bounty of fish, scenery, and wildlife that the Kenai watershed provides.

Swan Lake/ Swanson River Canoe Trail System is a complex of lakes, rivers and portages in the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The myriad of sparkling lakes within the Swan Lake system attracts canoeists of all interests and abilities, and offers a choice of several canoe routes of varying challenge levels, rewarding fishing opportunities, peace and relaxation. The Swanson River Canoe trail is most commonly paddled from the put in access at the end of the Swanson River Road downstream to the take out at Captain Cook State Recreation Area, a paddle of about 22 miles. Several small rapids and riffles add a challenging element to this canoe trip, but it is considered moderately easy for those with basic canoeing skills. Fishing and wildlife viewing is the highlight of a trip down the Swanson River.
RAFTING
The Upper Kenai River is a very popular rafting destination for private boaters and guided raft trip participants. Within the available 17 river miles between Kenai and Skilak Lakes, rafters may choose to stay on the relatively mild section above Jim’s Landing where there are some swift sections, but generally the river is no more than Class II. Below Jim’s Landing, though, some challenging and fun Class III white water exists in the Kenai River Canyon. This section of the river requires some planning: once at Skilak Lake, rafters must either boat the seven miles to a take out point at Upper Skilak Lake Campground, or deflate their rafts and pack them up the Hidden Creek Trail to the Skilak Lake Loop Road, a distance of 2 miles, uphill. Rafters should always wear their personal floatation devices on this river due to the fast and cold waters. For an adrenaline packed adventure, head to Sixmile Creek for a World Class guided rafting experience. Careen through the Class III-IV rapids of the upper canyons before dropping into the exhilarating Class V rapids in the lower canyon. With the stunning scenery, tight canyon walls and steep drops, Sixmile Creek is considered one of America’s top whitewater rafting destinations, but should only be attempted by expert rafters or on a guided trip with a reputable rafting company.
SEA KAYAKING/ /STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP)
Resurrection Bay provides a stunning backdrop of scenery and wildlife as you paddle your way in and out of coves tucked along the shoreline, sharing your serenity with sea lions, sea otters, a variety of whales and multitudes of puffin and other assorted avian. The paddling options are limitless-bring your own boat, rent one or hire a guide. Start from shore to enjoy the inner portions of the bay, take a water taxi to the remote areas or fly-in to Kenai Fjords National Park to have a spectacular experience kayaking/SUP amidst the glaciers. Seward has been named one of the top ten kayaking/SUP towns in the United States and after a day of paddling we are sure you will agree. Kachemak Bay surrounding Homer, Seldovia, and Halibut Cove has long been known for the best halibut fishing in the world, but more and more kayakers are finding the allure of the fjords of Kachemak Bay State Park irresistible. Whether you bring your own kayak, rent one, or hire a guide, all of your kayak excursions will begin with a water taxi ride across the bay. Once there you can spend a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks exploring the many coves and fjords that dot the coastline. Your adventure is sure to bring you in contact with numerous sea otters and birdlife, and you might even encounter a whale or two, but you will always be simply awed by the scenery. © 2017 Design Pics Inc/Alamy Stock Photo

GLACIER CRUISES
Have long been a popular attraction for visitors to Alaska and The Kenai, offering some of the best opportunities for enjoying these natural wonders up close and personal. The town of Seward is the launching point for a number of different glacier trips ranging from a short tour around Resurrection Bay to an all day excursion into Aialik Bay or Northwestern Fjord. Homer also offers a number of wildlife cruises in Kachemak Bay State Park. Most cruises depart before noon, but dinner cruises are often available. Remember that while you will be enjoying glacial views from the comfort of the boat cabin, the closer you get to the glaciers the more the temperature drops, so dress in warm layers.
SAILING
The best fair-weather saltwater sailing opportunities in south central Alaska are out of Homer and Seward. Sailing is an amazingly peaceful way of touring the Kenai Peninsula. You will be immersed in the beautiful surroundings of mountains, forest, wildlife and pristine waters. Charter opportunities include day trips, bareboat chartering and even learn to sail classes.
PAST, PRESENT &
FUTURE
Have you ever imagined what the last Ice Age actually looked like? Well, imagine no more. See it for yourself by flying over the 700-square mile Harding Icefield. Or driving to Exit Glacier. Or cruising in the Kenai Fjords National Park. It’s like stepping back in time 10,000 years. If you’d rather go back just a few centuries, there’s plenty of human history to discover. Captain Cook explored here in the late 18th Century. Russians colonized parts of the eastern coast, bringing a long-lasting influence to the area, including several Russian Orthodox churches, one of which is over 200 years old. Alaska Natives thrived on the Kenai’s rich resources from both land and sea. Walk in the footprints of time in Cooper Landing at K’beq, where Dena’ina Athabaskans share their traditions and culture with visitors through interpretive walks featuring archaeological sites and traditional plant use. Explore Denai’ina culture by viewing artifacts over 500 years old, their story told by descendants of those who made and used them. Your hosts, tribal elders and youth alike, want each visitor to leave K’beq’ as a Kenaitze Ida’ina (friend of the Kenaitze). Over the last century or so, gold, oil and coal have played significant roles in shaping today’s Peninsula. Gold brought prospectors to Hope and inspired the construction of the Alaska Railroad originating in Seward. “Black gold” (oil) was discovered on a northern Peninsula river. And Homesteaders still gather coal on the beaches of Homer. As you can see, The Kenai is packed with interesting history. And if you are like most peninsula adventurers, you would like to make history yourself by catching a world-record king salmon. Lester Anderson did just that on the Kenai River in 1985 with a 97lb., 4 oz. keeper. You can see it today at the Soldotna Visitors Center. And you know that monstrous fish has some hefty relatives just waiting for you. So c’mon up, even if you don’t make history, you’ll make memories to last a lifetime.

Or you can land for an up close and personal look at a glacier, a volcano, or bears and other wildlife. It can also be your ticket to accessing remote fishing areas and hiking trails. Regardless of your motivation or destination, you will always be assured spectacular bird’s eye views of some of the most awe inspiring scenery Alaska has to offer.
GOLFING
If golf is your game you can’t miss The Kenai, where the natural beauty defies description. Enjoy five different challenging courses with breathtaking views. Tee up under the midnight sun and play golf in the middle of the night with regulation balls. Don’t be surprised if a moose or caribou play through, it is all part of the remarkable experience of golfing in the last frontier.
HIKING & BIKING
For those who enjoy hiking and wilderness treks, The Kenai hosts over 400 miles of improved trails through pristine natural surroundings. Some trails are ideal for day-outings or family adventures while others are for heartier souls who are up to a challenge. For detailed information on hiking and biking opportunities on The Kenai, visit our web site at www.kenaipeninsula.org
HORSEBACK RIDING
Horseback riding has not replaced the dog sled for the traditional animal supported adventure in Alaska, but it has become a source of romance and adventure for many visitors to The Kenai. The opportunities for horsemen are numerous and range from mid-day, guided mountain trail rides to afternoon trots along the beach. Families can enjoy a group ride through scenic mountain passes and lush valleys, and hunters can ease the burden of packing out their meat with strong backs of packhorses. Regardless of your motivation, horseback riding provides a time honored adventure while experiencing The Kenai.

KENAI MOUNTAINS/HARDING ICEFIELD
Mountains connect The Kenai to the rest of Alaska, and mountains link the regions of The Kenai together. They define your experience on The Kenai wherever you are. They form the setting, the backdrop, or the stunning scenery on the horizon. They span The Kenai’s four major protected areas: Chugach National Forest, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and Kachemak Bay State Park. You’ll notice a distinct look and feel to virtually everywhere you go on The Kenai and nothing frames it better than The Kenai’s mountains. These mountains hold a contiguous ice field that is larger than the state of Rhode Island, is a half-mile deep, and is reachable by an adventuresome trail or two. Speaking of trails, do you know what one major difference is between Kenai’s mountains and other mountainous areas around the state? They are the most accessible! There are more than 433 miles of improved trails to help you find your own private mountain paradise for your day hike, backpacking trip, or leisurely walk.

REGIONAL ACTIVITIES EASTERN PENINSULA Eastern Peninsula towns of Hope, Moose Pass, Seward and Cooper Landing enjoy year round adventure. The Kenai Mountains, which make up the spine of the Peninsula, are trisected by two highways and numerous trails for hiking and biking. Wildlife and glacier cruises are not strictly summertime affairs. Several companies ferry passengers to Kenai Fjords National Park sites all through the winter. Flightseeing can occur any time the skies are clear, winter’s beautiful, frozen landscape is even more breathtaking from the air. The Alaska SeaLife Center is likewise a 12-month destination, educating all who pass through about the amazing biology of Alaska’s seas. For adventure seekers Turnagain Pass is The Kenai’s gateway and an ideal spot for Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snow machining, and snowshoeing. Snowshoes or backcountry skis can open the door to beautiful winter landscapes. In Seward you can visit a kennel and training camp for a famous Iditarod Racing Team. Mush on scenic trails to a glacier and see The Kenai in a way few get the opportunity to.

CENTRAL PENINSULA
SOUTHERN PENINSULA As you continue down the Sterling highway to the Southern Peninsula, you will be charmed by the communities of Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Homer, and with a short trip across Kachemak Bay, Seldovia. The unique biodiversity of Kachemak Bay can be explored any time of year, just be sure to dress warm for the lower water temperature. The fishing that draws so many in the summer hardly ceases with the decrease in daylight. Winter king salmon fishing is so strong that it has spawned its own tournament in the middle of March, put on by the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. The Southern Peninsula is also home to many of Alaska’s finest artists, galleries and museums, take a gallery stroll to escape the cold. Also, be sure to visit the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, a state of the art interpretive, educational, and research facility. Before heading out of town, don’t miss the Pratt Museum with exhibits on art, natural history, native cultures, homesteading, fishing, marine ecology and the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

T
he Kenai Peninsula is located just south of Anchorage, the entrance point for many visitors to Alaska. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and home of the Ted Stevens International Airport. Daily passenger flights connect Anchorage to the Peninsula through the City of Kenai and Homer, and most of our destination communities can be reached by road in 1.5 to 4.5 hours. If Anchorage is the launching point for your adventures on The Kenai, the business in this section are a great resource for the beginning or end of your trip. As you head south to The Kenai on the Seward Highway, the road weaves between the rocky mountain faces of the Chugach Mountains and 2017 ©Jim D. Barr/AlaskaStock.com the waters of Turnagain Arm – world renown for the largest tidal range in United States (30ft on average). The Alaska Railroad, Dall Sheep and Beluga whales are commonly spotted along the Turnagain Arm, and people can often be seen rock climbing, wind surfing, kite boarding or riding the 6-10 foot bore tides that sweep through periodically. 39 miles from Anchorage you will come upon the town of Girdwood – a great place to top off your fuel tank, freshen up, and grab snacks for the road. Girdwood is 15 miles from the northern border of the Kenai Peninsula, marked by a welcome sign where the Seward Highway turns and begins its ascent into Turnagain Pass and onto The Kenai, Alaska’s Playground.

This flight takes us over the Cook Inlet oil platforms, past two active volcanoes (Redoubt & Iliamna), and over the glaciers, bays and estuaries of the western shore of Cook Inlet. This flight includes a beach landing for viewing and taking pictures of the bears.
The success for fly-out fishing trips generally exceeds that of road accessible waters.

NINILCHIK
NINILCHIK
A
photographic haven lodged in history and in legend, Ninilchik is a fishing community that lives up to its Russian name, "peaceful settlement by a river." The flavor of this old Russian fur-trading village still emphasizes its past prominence. The Old Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1900, and the historic cemetery overlook the entire rustic village of Ninilchik, and peacefully share the brilliant Alaskan sunset skyline with Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna, which are perched across Cook Inlet. Beaches, rivers and boat launches provide access to Cook Inlet for world-class salmon and halibut fishing, while the community itself offers full amenities with beautiful campgrounds, both public and private, lodging and restaurant facilities.

get to the point... anchor point
“N
orth America’s Most Westerly Highway Point” stretches along the Sterling Highway, atop the bluffs overlooking Cook Inlet, and winds down through the pristine Anchor River Valley. As our motto, “Come To Play ~ Come To Stay”, suggests Anchor Point is as excellent choice for those who want the “real Alaska” out their back door, while enjoying all the conveniences of our modern day world. Anchor River offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities beginning with King Salmon in the spring, continuing with Dolly Varden and Silver Salmon in the summer and cumulating with Steelhead in the fall until freeze up. With boat launching facilities available Cook Inlet is easily accessible throughout the summer for halibut and salmon fishing. Not interested in fishing? May we suggest beachcombing, a favorite activity of residents and visitors alike. Visit our neighboring community of Nikolaevsk, a Russian village inland a few miles; enjoy our art studio and gift shops, or take in a motor cross race. Be sure to come by our Visitor Information Center and mini-museum. Wintertime fun includes snow maching, cross country skiing, ice fishing the near by lakes, in addition to the many events sponsored throughout the winter by our local organizations.

ocated just a hop, skip and a jump from Homer, Kachemak Bay State Park contains 375,000 acres of mountains, fjords, glaciers, forests and ocean. With the 2-million-acre Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and the 670,000-acre Kenai Fjords National Park right next door, the wilderness appears to go on forever.

More than 40 miles of trails offer easy-to-difficult hikes. Cross-country and telemark skiers and ice climbers pursue their sport above the timberline on miles of glaciers and snowfields. Hunting and fishing for salmon and rainbow trout are also popular. The park has primitive campsites and public-use cabins. Backpackers are encouraged to camp at designated sites because of the potential for bear encounters. No roads lead to the park, but the area is easily accessible. Several Homer based air taxis provide frequent flight service and there are numerous water taxis available. HALIBUT COVE • CHINA POOT BAY • PETERSON BAY TUTKA BAY • KACHEMAK BAY STATE PARK
