COAST ALL INCLUSIVE PUBLIC MARKET
Location: Mombasa, Kongowea. Year: 2022 Type: Academic project. Programmes Used: » Archicad » Sketchup » Twinmotion » Photoshop The design of this project is informed by the research thesis entitled “Role of spatial qualities in enhancing public markets experience” done by the author. The study findings indicated that for a public market to be successful the design of social spaces should be considered of equal importance as economic spaces. The thesis research ascertained that in existing public markets there was little attempt to design them as inclusive spaces accessible to people of all types. The project is named Coast all-inclusive public market to describes an accessible, hospitable and accommodative place where needs of the entire populace is equally considered.
9
ALL INCLUSIVE PUBLIC MARKET
Concept evolution
» Form concept The form of the market borrows from the streamlined shape of a dhow. -Dhows were used to transport goods between Africa and Asia in the pre-modern period via Mombasa.
» Circulation and planning concept Circulation layout is inspired by alleyways of historical Swahili villages which took advantage of sea breeze to cool homes and spaces in between. The plan layout of the public market respond to the site’s wind directions, existing movement patterns, and space’s program and zoning.
