SPORTS BOOKLET
Preparatory School

Introduction Teamwork, perseverance and leadership are skills that we strive to teach our boys during their time at King’s. One of the best ways we do this is through our sports program.
Sport is a key part of our community here at King’s, as boys and parents alike enjoy the social bonding that sport brings. We hope that this booklet is informative and that you enjoy watching your son learn, compete and grow in character and strength this year.
Designed to cater to the range of abilities within the Prep community, our program offers each and every boy the chance to learn how to play a variety of sports. Sport also teaches boys about health and fitness and the importance of these aspects in their daily life. It helps them to understand what it means to work as a team as they represent their School with pride.

As Head of Sport of The King’s School, Preparatory School, I strongly believe that every boy, regardless of his ability, should participate in sport. The King’s School Sports Program provides a wonderful way for the boys to socialise with each other outside the classroom, whilst teaching them valuable skills of leadership and teamwork.
Practising and working hard towards achieving goals is a valuable part of participation in sports for kids, and whether they win or lose, there’s always a lesson to take from the field. This Sports Booklet has been developed to answer many of the questions regarding sport at The King’s Preparatory School. Perhaps it would be helpful if parents kept this booklet handy, such as in the glove box of the car, as a go to guide. The information in the booklet complements other sports information, which can be found on the King’s Prep KingsNet Sports Pages.
I am committed to ensuring that your son is challenged and excited by his sport experience, whilst supporting his personal development. I believe that sport also helps to foster confidence, respect and self-esteem.

Bringing out The Best in Our Boys During Sport There is a great deal of research outlining the benefits of sport. These include the development of character, confidence, teamwork and leadership. There is also a very strong link to increased academic performance amongst students who lead well-balanced lives, including being physically active, compared to those who are not.
Sport is also a wonderful way to demonstrate the School’s Values which we actively reinforce: • Responsibility • Respect • Honesty • Humility • Integrity • Compassion • Excellence • Gratitude
Sport is compulsory for all Year 3-6 boys and involves them in two training sessions, one on Thursday afternoons after lunch and one after School (3.20 - 4.45pm), as well as a Saturday morning game against other IPSHA Schools.
Students demonstrate school values at Sport each week in the following ways: • Boys supporting each other despite losing their game • Boys encouraging teammates after a mistake • Boys showing humility after scoring or winning a game • Boys respecting their coaches and their decisions about positional play or time off the field • Boys respecting the umpires or referees’ decision even when they don’t
As educators and you as parents, we want to ensure the boys’ sporting commitments are a happy and rewarding experience for them. This is achieved by: • being supportive of our son’s sport selection • being supportive of the coaching staff’s team selection process • being committed to the School’s Sporting fixtures, including arriving 30 minutes before their game • providing positive support to the boys during their games • providing positive support to the coaches
The expectations of students in the commitment to the School Sport Program are the following: • Arriving to practice and games on time (at least 30 minutes before the game is due to commence) • Training hard and doing their best during every session • Listening to their coach and following his/her directions • Supporting their teammates at all times • Applying for Leave with plenty of advance notice to ensure adjustments to the team can be made (normally one week in advance)
10
These include:
• being given a Saturday Detention where they will be required to attend their team’s next Saturday game in full Sports uniform (including tracksuit for Terms Two and Three) and stand by the coach and support the team without taking the field or court.
• Negative comments to other boys: • about their performance; not trying hard enough • about a mistake on the field eg a missed tackle or shot at goal • that they don’t belong in this team • about their equipment not being good enough
These consequences will be at the discretion of the coach in the first instance and may include the Head of Sport, and/or the Deputy Heads of Co-curricular and Students and Community.
These comments could be made during a game, at practice, in the classroom, on the playground or electronically. They could be said or communicated directly to the boy or be made to another boy. Neither is acceptable!
The TKS and IPSHA guidelines for Players, Coaches and Spectators are found in this booklet. We ask that you sit down with your son and reinforce the message we have provided to them during the day and read through the Conduct Guidelines.
Students should be aware that there would be consequences to negative behaviour both on and off the field. These consequences include: • being taken off the playing field/court for an amount of time (this could be as little as five or ten minutes or be for a half or for the remainder of the game. 11
The King’s School Preparatory Sport Structure Cricket
Not only do our boys get the chance to play sport for King’s, there are many opportunities for them to compete beyond the school level. King’s participates in a range of sporting competitions including IPSHA, NSWCIS and State and National competitions. See below for how our boys can progress from school sport to representative sport.

Swimming
The King’s School aims to deliver a differentiated Sport Program so that are talented athletes are given opportunities to be challenged, and sessions organised so that no student is left behind. The school offers out of season programs for students who play in an A team. These are scheduled so that they do not conflict with other co-curricular activities. If there is a conflict, a decision is made on a case by case basis on which activity takes priority. Running training sessions are also offered in the morning before school for students who wish to improve their general health and fitness, or are training for a representative level event.

TKS Prep Sporting Conduct Guidelines Sport has the potential to be a considerable force for building character and confidence, and an important tool for the development of well-balanced young men. However, when perspective is lost and winning at all costs becomes the focus, sporting experiences can be most destructive.
• get them to games on time so that they learn to be organised and reliable. Please discuss with your son, the importance of having fun, representing our School well by being principled and showing respect; making a commitment to our teammates by arriving on time and being prepared; and caring for each other by using words, which build up rather than pull down.
We would encourage all parents to read closely the ‘Statement of aims of Junior School Sport’ and the ‘IPSHA Code of Conduct for School Sport’ that have been included in this handout and can be found on KingsNet.
Parental support and etiquette displayed on the sideline provides the boys with an effective model and helps to keep this powerful learning medium, and enjoyable spectacle, in perspective.
Please endeavour to: • be positive in support of your son’s team and coach
The acronym ‘SPORT’ can help remind us of some key elements of successful participation in most sports:
• build your son and others up so that they too can learn to build their peers up 14
SPORTSMANSHIP needs to be maintained at all times
PASSION is a key ingredient
always take your
OPPORTUNITIES to learn more
RESPECT your opposition and team mates at all times; and be effective
remember that the TEAM comes first
Points for Players to Remember
• Be on time and correctly dressed at matches and trainings.
• Training – each player will attend all team training sessions, unless a signed note or email is produced from a parent or guardian stating the reason for the non-attendance.
• Follow the IPSHA Code of Conduct. • Check KingsNet for game details each Friday after 3pm. • Remember the 5Ws (Who, Where, When and Wet Weather)
• Lateness to training will not be tolerated under any circumstance and may result in disciplinary action.
• Team equipment – make it a habit never to leave until the team kit is packed, and treat it as your own. Teams are responsible for their own kits. Players should pack kits neatly and tidily during games, keeping equipment not being used neatly in the kit. At the end of the match, no player should leave until the team kit has been packed.
• Poor attitude at training will not be tolerated and players will have a time-out from training for constant breaches. • Lateness to games – for players’ safety and for appropriate preparation, it is required that you arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to the start of the game. This is to allow for ample warm-up time.
• Consider your team mates. The role of the host school / convenor is to be clearly defined (ie responsibilities re provision of umpires, referees, sportsmanship, barracking, courtesy etc.)
• Clothing and equipment – players must attend training and matches dressed in appropriate clothing and bring necessary safety equipment. • Poor conduct toward the referee – players WILL NOT enter into debates with the referee. It is the responsibility of the team captain to bring concerns to the referee.
Host School (ie staff, children and parents) should welcome visitors to the School’s grounds.
• Do your best at all times.
15
IPSHA Code of Conduct for School Sport Coaches’ Code of Behaviour
• Develop team respect for the ability of the opponents as well as for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches.
• Basic skills should be taught to all team members. Children should be encouraged to play hard and win fairly.
• Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed of sound coaching principles and the principles of growth and development of children.
• Teach your players that rules of the sport are mutual agreements, that no one should evade or break.
• Make it a positive experience for the children.
• Children should participate for fun and enjoyment and winning is only part of their motivation. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing a competition.
Players’ Code of Behaviour
• Coaching during games should not interfere with the control by the referee or umpire, nor should it be offensive to opponents.
• Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not permitted in any sport.
• Play by the rules. • Never argue with an official.
• Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the players.
• Work equally hard for yourself and/or for your team. Your team will benefit, so will you.
16
• Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays, whether they are by your team, opponent or the other team.
• Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition. • Positive comments are motivational and encourage continued effort.
• Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
• Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
• Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.
• Show respect for your team’s opponents, for without them there would be no game.
• Co-operate with your coach, teammates and opponents, for without them there would be no competition.
• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials.
• Place in proper perspective, the isolated incidents of unsporting behaviour, rather than make such incidents the ‘highlight’ of the event.
• Ensure comments do not interfere with the running of the game. • Focus on the efforts and performance of the children rather than the result.
• If a player is sent off during the game, a oneweek suspension is recommended.
PRAISE: Praise is encouraged at all levels.
• Thank the opposition and officials at the end of a game.
COMPLAINTS: Complaints concerning the conduct of games should not be made during or after the game. Any concerns should be referred to one’s Head of Junior School and any action should be left to his/her discretion.
Spectators’ Code of Behaviour • Children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should parents contact any school directly.
• Applaud good performances and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome.
All grounds must be kept clean – litter must be placed in the bins provided.
• Respect the official’s decision and the rules of the game.

Rotation of Players
should carry a First Aid kit with them at trainings and games, as medical treatment is not always available at all venues.
Appropriate sizes of squads for each team have been agreed upon. There is an expectation that all teams will rotate players from time to time as required. This rotation is at the discretion of the coach, but is aimed at providing a good proportion of games for each squad member during the normal season. This may be impeded on occasions when opposition schools create late withdrawals of fixtures or cancellations due to inclement weather.
For home fixtures at the School, the Health Centre is available for injuries. During the winter season, a Physiotherapist will be at the grounds for home games. Coaches of all teams are responsible for properly warming up their players prior to starting the match. It is important to make sure your son is at the venue to complete this warm up as he may not be able to start the match unless properly warmed up. This decision will come down to the discretion of the coach.
Movement Between Grades A boy’s continuation on any team level is subject to satisfactory performance and attitude. Movement may occur between teams at the discretion of the coaching staff.
Players are to provide their own water for games and training sessions. Shared water is not allowed, for health reasons.
First Aid and Health Practices
Mouthguards and protective gear are necessary for certain sports, and parents are asked to make sure boys have these for the match as they may not be allowed to play if these items are missing.
First Aid is treated very professionally by the coaching staff and in-servicing of coaches and teachers is held regularly at the School. Each coach 18
Parental Support
Parents can also assist their son’s sporting development by providing supplementary skill development and practice opportunities outside of school. The additional practice will help to reinforce skills being learnt at the school and further development.
Parents have always been supportive of school sport. Parents offer their help in many different areas including the canteen, scoring, equipment management etc. This assistance is valued by coaches and some coaches may wish to utilise parents in a team management role (at the discretion of the coach).
Canteen Our School canteen is governed by the Fathers’ Association and the current Year 3 fathers run the canteen each sporting weekend, providing a terrific chance for the fathers to bond, whilst giving time to the School for the benefit of all.
Parents may wish to complete a Smart Rugby course or equivalent in other sports, which is beneficial for several reasons: • To familiarise themselves with the new modified rules.
Team Selections
• To understand more about children and sport.
Selections for Prep Sport are taken very seriously by the School. We have implemented a scale of necessary skill components from the boys for each sport. The scores are then added together giving an overall score and rank to the players. The rankings and scores are not released to the parents or boys, however, they are used to assist the coaches with

Coach’s Award: This award is given through a culmination of points throughout the season. 3, 2 and 1 point awards are given at each match and these are added up for the final award. Coaches use their own discretion to award points for each match.
We do understand that when trialling the boys, they may not show us their ultimate performance at these allocated sessions, due to being nervous, unwell or even overconfident. To cater for this, we allow the first few weeks for further refinement in the selection process. Players may change teams based upon their skill level, performance, efforts and attitude in training and games.
Most Improved Award: This award goes to the player who the coach believes has made the most improvement in ability and attitude throughout the season.
Resilience is an important component of life and through hard work, success is found. If players feel their selection is unjust, it is suggested that the player discuss his selection and areas where they are able to improve with the coach.
Team Captains Many boys are given the opportunity to captain a team during their time at the Prep. Captains are elected or chosen for their leadership qualities and should support the coach in a variety of ways.
Please allow the boys to develop the skills and social bonds as they connect with their team. Encourage them to enjoy the sport in which they are involved.
Equipment
Awards (Coach’s Award and Most Improved)
All team equipment is catered for by the School for both trainings and games. The majority of the sports clothing can be purchased at the School’s Braeside Shop. Individuals will need their own protective equipment.
At the end of the sporting seasons, the coaches have the opportunity to present awards for selected students within their team. These awards are presented to the boys in front of the School.

Preparatory School Carnivals Participation in all Prep School Carnivals is compulsory for all students regardless of whether they want to be considered for team selection. These carnivals take place throughout the school year and include invitational carnivals as well as other carnivals where Prep School students may attend.
With regards to Preparatory School invitational carnivals held either before or after the IPSHA carnival, boys are permitted to withdraw from events they have qualified for in order to specialise or reduce their workload. However, all team members are required to attend a minimum of three Junior School invitational carnivals. Students in the Prep School swimming team are also expected to attend squad training sessions.
Swimming The main outcome and emphasis for the carnival is to allow students to settle into their House, to participate in a House carnival, and to encourage School spirit. The secondary purpose is to select a Prep School swimming team that will compete at several invitational swimming carnivals leading up to or after the IPSHA carnival that is run later in Term 1. If selected for the IPSHA squad, boys can then progress through to the CIS (Combined Independent Schools) and NSW PSSA squads respectively, all the way through to Nationals.
PREP SCHOOL SWIMMING TRIALS The Prep School swimming trials are conducted during the boys’ normal PE lessons at the commencement of the school year. All boys are encouraged to trial for both a 25m freestyle and one other 25m event. Trials help in seeding the boys in the correct heat at the Prep Swimming Carnival. Boys need to select to compete in either a 25m or 50m race on the day. They are not permitted to swim in both lengths for each stroke. Age Champion points can only be gained through participation in 50m, 100m and 200m events in the championship races. 25m races are not included in the calculation of Age Championships or selection for the Prep swim team.
Any boy who wishes to be part of the School representative team must have participated in the Prep School carnival. The results from this carnival will be used to select the IPSHA team. Any boy selected for the Preparatory School swimming team is permitted to withdraw from events they may have qualified for in order to specialise or reduce their workload. No student will be selected into the Prep School team who is carrying an existing injury that would warrant exclusion from training and or some carnivals.
PREP SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL The Prep School Swimming Carnival is held early in Term 1. This Carnival focuses on participation, but is also the pathway for the boys to gain selection into the King’s swimming team for the IPSHA
22
Carnival. All boys are expected to compete in at least two events on the day. Age Champions and Runners Up are awarded to the boys who perform consistently well on the day. This is determined by a points system based on their place in a Championship event.
SWIMMING TRAINING Swimming training for the Prep School team is held in the Preparatory School swimming pool on Thursday and Friday afternoon from 3.20pm– 4.45pm during Terms 1 and 4. It is expected that all boys who have been selected into the King’s Preparatory Swimming team attend these sessions.
SELECTION OF PREP SCHOOL SWIM TEAM
Athletics
The selection of the Prep School Swim team is based on times at the School Swimming Carnival only. Boys swimming in either the Championship Division or Division One races are eligible for selection to the IPSHA Carnival. If your son is unable to attend the King’s carnival due to illness, and he has represented at a high level, then he may be able to participate in carnivals, dependent upon his previous results. This will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
The Athletics season takes place after the final round of winter sport, but boys are involved in Athletics activities from Term 2 onwards during PE time. The Preparatory Athletics Carnival takes place in Term 3. Field events trials are held prior to the Athletics Carnival. Finals for all field events are held on the day of the carnival. Any boy who wishes to be part of the King’s representative team must have participated in the King’s carnival. If your son is unable to attend the King’s carnivals due to illness and he has represented at a high level, then he may be able to participate in carnivals, dependent upon his previous results. This will be dealt with on a caseby-case basis.
IPSHA SELECTIONS IPSHA selections are based upon results at the school Swimming Carnival. Boys are chosen in the following events: • 50m Freestyle – 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Years are separate. • 50m Breaststroke – Junior (8/9/10) Years, Senior (11/12/13) Years
The results from the Prep School carnival will be used to select the IPSHA team. Any boy selected for the Preparatory School Athletics team is permitted to withdraw from events they may have qualified for in order to specialise or reduce their workload. No student will be selected into the Prep School team who is carrying an existing injury that would warrant exclusion from training.
• 50m Butterfly – Junior (8/9/10) Years, Senior (11/12/13) Years • 50m Backstroke – Junior (8/9/10) Years, Senior (11/12/13) Years • 200 Individual Medley – Junior (8/9/10) Years, Senior (11/12/13) Years.
However, all team members are required to attend a minimum of one Preparatory School organised training per week during athletics season as well as participation in a minimum of two Junior School invitational carnivals.
The top two competitors in each category are eligible to swim at the IPSHA Swimming Carnival. CIS SWIM TEAM To gain selection into the IPSHA team for the NSWCIS Swimming Carnival, the boys must record the top five fastest times for their event at the IPSHA Swimming Championships. The NSWCIS Carnival provides the opportunity for the boys to gain selection into the NSW PSSA Swimming team. 23
Cross Country
IPSHA Selection
All students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in a Prep School Cross Country Carnival. The top 10 place getters in each year level from Years 3 to 6 will form part of the Prep School team, that competes at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival held at The King’s School. Top place getters in each age group in this carnival will have an opportunity to participate in the NSW CIS Cross Country Championship.
Throughout the year there are opportunities for students (mainly Year 6) to be nominated to attend IPSHA selections for various sports - not including the three major carnivals. Some are trial days and some sports require attendance for training days and/or specific data or results provided. The number of School representatives nominated for selections depend on different factors (number of Year 6 students, teams in the various sports, pooling population etc).
