Impact of Giving

A Celebration of Philanthropy

About the Foundation

The King’s School Foundation, together with the Development Office, is the body through which the philanthropic initiatives for the School are advanced. Governed by a Board of Directors, the Foundation is responsible for ensuring strategic investments in the School’s future.

The Foundation manages:

• annual giving

• scholarships

• building funds and appeals

• bequests (Gift in Will) and benefactions

• co-curricular

• support group infrastructure

The Foundation’s efforts reach across the entirety of The King’s School community: Old Boys, parents and past parents, staff and friends are all essential parts of our philanthropic endeavours.

The King’s School Foundation has made an important contribution to the School’s success. It has enabled the School’s learning environment to improve over many years. The buildings and facilities, as well as the campus site from which generations of King’s boys have benefited is in no small part the result of the generosity of King’s families and Old Boys. This has enabled each student to unlock their potential and transform their lives.

The impact of giving stories here are examples of the profound effect a donor can have to change a young person’s

and contribute to our collective endeavour for educational excellence.

By investing in the next generation, you are investing in the quality of our future. We extend our gratitude and encourage you to help sow the seeds of a better future for King’s students, both leading up to the School’s 2031 bicentenary and beyond. Help us write this next historic chapter to connect the past, present and future of King’s.

Message from the Headmaster

The King’s School stands as an extraordinary institution. With the distinction of being Australia’s oldest independent school, established in 1831, and encompassing a unique geographic expanse of over 500 acres spanning Parramatta and the Southern Highlands, the remarkable 200-year history and present offerings of the School are not the result of any one individual’s efforts. Yet, we each are responsible for ensuring its enduring positive influence on society, both as an expression of gratitude and a commitment to stand by those who have benefited from its educational heritage.

While perfection has never been the School’s claim, our commitment remains steadfast in perfecting the institution and elevating its status as an exceptional Australian school that contributes to the global common good. While the School can currently meet its financial obligations through tuition fees, which cater to the educational needs of today’s students, The King’s School has consistently aimed to set new benchmarks in education within Australia and across the globe. This aspiration can only be fulfilled through the generosity of our alumni and families.

Within this context, two significant philanthropic opportunities arise. The first entails enhancing educational accessibility for individuals who lack the financial means to secure enrolment at the School. This broader accessibility is realised through a range of scholarships and bursaries, a crucial step toward maintaining a sustainable demographic diversity within our school community. The second opportunity lies in expanding our academic, co-curricular, and community infrastructure to enrich the teaching and learning experiences.

Above all, fostering and perpetuating a culture of generosity and gratitude is paramount. It ensures that every student who graces our halls acknowledges the benevolence of others – be it their parents, family, friends, or alumni. This realisation is pivotal in nurturing an enduring dedication among our graduates to lead lives dedicated to serving the betterment of others.

I extend a heartfelt invitation to you to contribute to cultivating this culture of benevolence and appreciation by contributing financially to The King’s School Foundation. Your voluntary and regular support would not only be greatly appreciated, but it could also serve as an inspirational model for our students to emulate in the future.

Fortiter et Fideliter.

Giving in Action

Over the past 25 years, our accomplishments have been achieved with the support of contributions both large and small. We celebrate the impact of every gift.

AREAS OF PRIORITY

People – Scholarships and Bursaries

Providing talented and deserving students from all walks of life with access to our exceptional educational experience.

Places – Buildings and Infrastructure

Developing contemporary, purpose-built learning environments which ignite curiosity.

Programs – Bicentenary Endowment Fund

Ensuring the School’s current and emerging priorities are met now and into the future.

Culture of Giving

The King’s School has unique history and traditions which parallel the development of our nation. As Australia’s oldest independent school founded in 1831, our strength and standing is due to the School’s ability to evolve and grow through its culture of philanthropy.

Our culture of philanthropy underpins the tradition of generosity at King’s. The facilities, scholarships, bursaries, prizes and programs are largely the result of the generosity of previous generations who have invested in our boys and their School to deliver the highest standards of education and to create the leaders of tomorrow. Our forebears, those visionaries who sowed the seeds of the School’s success, understood the essence of giving and collective endeavour.

The King’s School of today is a modern and dynamic Australian school inspired by our values and the quality of teaching. At King’s, philanthropy plays a vital role as it:

• Offers means-tested scholarships for boys of promise.

• Supports educational excellence and advancement.

• Drives key strategic goals and growth.

• Fosters lifelong community bonds.

• Provides a buttress against changes in government funding models.

• Strengthens King’s Distinctives and competitive edge.

• Provides a formal avenue for giving back to the School.

I look forward to working with you to ensure your generosity has a meaningful impact on improving The King’s School and for the good of society.

Message from the Foundation Chairman

I thank the King’s community for your support. The generosity of past generations helps to provide one of the most exceptional educational experiences in Australia. Every new gift helps shape the future generations of King’s students.

The impact of giving stories showcase the incredible acts of generosity which have helped to transform boys’ lives. It is a privilege to connect a donor’s values and passions to areas that they are most interested in.

To provide opportunities to give back and be of service to others. The joy of giving to a worthy project or scholarship builds the bond of our community between family, friends and community.

I am grateful to every donor at King’s – whether your contribution has been large or small. Through major gifts, termly giving, or one-time donations, your support has paved the way for a plethora of opportunities across a diverse range of passions within the School. These encompass not only boarding, clubs, and sports but also extend to co-curricular activities, leadership programs, performing arts, music, debating, science, agriculture, Christian ministry and international exchanges.

The Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritising means-tested scholarships and the enhancement of our facilities and buildings. Presently, our Foundation comprises 12 dedicated volunteer board members. We extend an invitation for your active involvement, inviting you to contribute to the Foundation’s visionary direction. We welcome your participation and membership on the pathway towards 2031.

Ethan Zhu (‘24)

A Young Leader with a Bright Future

2

024 School Captain, Ethan Zhu is an exemplary Kingsman with an impressive and diverse list of accolades, all achieved through an attitude of hard work which he applies academically and through his co-curricular endeavours.

Left to right: Ethan Zhu and the Hon Justice Lloyd Waddy AM, RFD, KC

From the beginning of his King’s journey at the Preparatory School as a Year 5 student in 2017, it was clear that Ethan had the potential to achieve great accomplishments at the School.

Over the years, he has received countless academic prizes and is a consistent recipient of the Certificate of Academic Proficiency. In Year 10 (2022), he was awarded The Wade Cup in recognition of his academic and athletic ability and manliness of character.

Ethan received Full Academic Colours and Honour Colours for his achievements in Debating as well as Music.

He has contributed richly to many academic clubs, such as The Twelve Club, The Student Colloquium, Da Vinci Decathlon Team, and The Business and Investing Club. In 2023, he founded the Debating and Public Speaking Club.

“At King’s, we are spoilt for choice. The opportunities are wide and varied, and the boys are so blessed to be surrounded by a community of supportive staff and great mates. So much of our success is because of others,” says Ethan.

In 2023, Ethan was the second student in the history of The King’s School to receive the prestigious Lawrence Campbell Oratory Prize, an annual impromptu public speaking competition involving representatives from the Great Public Schools and

Combined Associative Schools in New South Wales. In 1957, the Hon Justice Lloyd Waddy AM, RFD, KC was the first King’s student to win the prize. He was also a scholarship student and took great pleasure in presenting this award to Ethan in front of his fellow Kingsmen. It was a wonderful moment where two scholarship students, some 66 years between success stories, were able to celebrate how the generosity of others has shaped them.

According to Ethan, while his achievement was a great honour, the opportunity to be part of a school community such as The King’s School is his greatest privilege.

“Upon reflection, my biggest achievement is not a prize or award I have received. While I am incredibly proud of those things, I believe the opportunity to be part of the King’s community is my greatest honour. The School Values and the lifelong friendships I have forged have shaped me into the person I am today.”

Ethan is a member of the Cadet Corps, and to his surprise, has developed a love of sport, representing the School in both Athletics and Rowing and was part of the 1st Junior VIII Rowing Crew who won Head of the River and the U17 Australian Rowing Championships in 2022. Ethan is also a gifted musician and plays clarinet in the School band and orchestra.

“The Scholarship is a gift that I have truly benefited from. It has taken me to China, I have camped in the backcountry of the snowy mountains, trekked with 25 other mates in a valley in Singleton, and spent two months on an exchange program in Germany. Who knows where it will take me next? Every boy at the School has a unique and special story. Wherever it takes us, the generosity of others has made it possible. Thank you for believing in a well-rounded education, and thank you for investing in the future.”

A remarkable legacy from the Futter & Macansh families…. to ensure the next generation of fine young men make their mark on the world .
MR DON MACANSH (‘49), DECENDENT OF VIOLET MACANSH

Being a Violet Macansh Scholarship recipient motivated me to do everything to the best of my ability. At King’s, I learned the value of being a good person before anything else, which is why I love King’s. ”

Archer Holz (‘18)

From Lightning Ridge to the

World Stage

Archer Holz was always destined to leave the nest of his supportive community in Lightning Ridge, NSW. At just nine years old, Archer’s parents recognised he was growing up and needed a challenge. After being awarded a scholarship in Year 7, Archer attended King’s as a boarder for his Senior School years.rs.

“We weren’t super wealthy, but mum and dad have always worked hard to give us whatever we needed. They knew I needed that push. So, in Year 4 we came to have a look at King’s. We all fell in love with King’s straight away.”

From his award-winning performance as Best Supporting Actor in The Crucible to playing for the 1st XV, Archer understood the importance of staying true to himself, pushing the boundaries and supporting mates in all their activities. “It’s so important and exciting to try as much as possible while you are there. It doesn’t matter if you try something and fail. At The King’s School, there is nothing to lose.”

It’s so important and exciting to try as much as possible while you are there. It doesn’t matter if you try something and fail. At The King’s School, there is nothing to lose. ”

Archer graduated from King’s in 2018, securing himself a study path with the University of Sydney and the opportunity of a lifetime to pursue his love of Rugby. He went on to represent NSW, playing for the Waratahs as a prop, and in the 2021/2022 season, he made his debut with the Wallabies Australian A team.

While Archer has achieved more than his nine-year-old self could have ever hoped and dreamed of, his ability to remain humble and thankful for the opportunities presented to him remains.

Daniel Payne (‘24)

A Story of Dedication

J

oining The King’s School in Year 7 from the lush and remote area of Barrington Tops in New South Wales, Baker Hake boarder Daniel Payne is widely known across the School community for his consistent effort and outstanding contributions in all areas of school life.

As a Violet Macansh Scholarship recipient, Daniel has found a way to hold tight to every opportunity and embrace the rich culture that makes King’s distinct. “I want to continue improving myself and excel to the best of my ability, as I know not everyone gets a chance to receive such a high education at a great school like this,” said Daniel.

Daniel is fully immersed in the King’s boarding community and is a highly respected member of the Baker Hake House. He has demonstrated an ability to lead as both a Gowan Brae Monitor and a 2024 School Monitor.

As a talented performing arts student, Daniel has performed in many school musicals and plays, receiving half colours for his achievements as an outstanding entertainer.

Daniel is part of the Cadet Corps and is a keen rower, claiming the program is one of his favourite and most challenging experiences at King’s. “Rowing has been one of the most positive influences throughout my King’s journey. It has taught me discipline, commitment and the importance of nurturing one’s health and fitness. I believe that being a Kingsman is about trying your hardest in everything you do.”

Daniel has also achieved his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, demonstrating his desire for a healthy risk appetite and ability to face and overcome challenges – all qualities of a fine Kingsman.

According to Daniel’s Mother, Cath Payne, Daniel had his heart set on attending King’s, and the Violet Macansh Scholarship made his dream a reality and has been a life-changing experience for Daniel.

“ ”

The best lesson I have learnt during my time at King’s is to try new things outside of your comfort zone. You never know what might happen if you try something new.

The Chapel Pavilion is another outstanding project

Futter Park is a unique pastoral property that was gifted to the School. For over seventy years, this working farm has distributed over $18 million to The King’s School, transforming boys’ lives through means-tested scholarships.

“ As parents we are so grateful for the way in which King’s has shaped our children ”

“ It’s my great pleasure to contribute towards the Chapel Pavilion which will connect the past, present and future King’s. ”

Annual Giving Day

The King’s School is thriving due to the philanthropic support of our community and notable benefactors, who, over the years, have helped to preserve the culture and heritage of our School whilst delivering the best learning experience.

In 2022, King’s introduced a new value – “Gratitude”. Gratitude is important in celebrating excellence in others, for keeping us humble and helping us to appreciate all that we have. On 16 June 2023, The King’s School celebrated Giving Day. Giving Day forms part of the School’s important philanthropic annual giving program, but importantly, it encourages our community to celebrate what we are grateful for and build an ongoing attitude of thankfulness. The past generosity of the School community has underpinned many key developments of The King’s School.

We invited parents, Old Boys, staff, past parents, partners and all members of our community to contribute towards the Chapel Pavilion Project, which will enable future generations of The King’s School to gather as one community in a new building facility at the very heart of the School.

As a result, we exceeded our target of $100,000. This was made possible by generous donations and pledges given to the School.

A Gift in Memory of Sir George Clifton Halliday

Sir George Clifton Halliday, a distinguished ENT surgeon and Council of The King’s School Governor, embodies excellence in both medical and educational leadership. With a career marked by innovation and compassion, he transformed countless lives through surgical precision and patient care.

George Halliday was Dux of The King’s School (1919) and graduated from the University of Sydney in 1925, with a degree in medicine. George was an excellent sportsman and a Junior NSW Tennis champion. He was awarded the Ellis Roth Prize for his academic achievement in Mathematics. During World War II, he served in Greece and Palestine. He became Head of Otolaryngology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Honorary Fellow of Otolaryngology at The University of Sydney, Faculty of Medicine.

Beyond the operating room, he committed much of his life to the service of those with hearing loss. As a School Governor and Foundation Trustee, his focus on fostering educational excellence as a key governance pillar at The King’s School in the 1960-70’s had a significant impact. Sir George’s dual commitment to hearing and education exemplifies a life devoted to service of his community.

His legacy leaves an indelible mark on the field of medicine and education. Sir George Halliday was one of Australia’s leading otolaryngologists and he was knighted in 1967 for his achievements and contributions to medicine.

A final act of generosity was to leave a major gift in his will to the School. This benefaction enables four means-tested scholarships to be available for boys to gain a King’s education.
