The King’s School was established in 1831 to provide Australia with the next generation of leaders. Almost 200 years on, the original charter of the School is both central to our mission and the educational offering the School provides.

The King’s School uniform, while being the oldest military uniform still worn in Australia, is wonderfully symbolic of what it means to be a Kingsman - one who is willing to live a life of service to make an outstanding impact for the good of society and others.

The learning landscape of the School provides boys with the challenge and adventure needed to shape the unique character of our boys. With a focus on development of the whole student, the 320 acres of The King’s School is used to deliver curricular and co-curricular offerings for every student via an authentic and distinctive leadership development pathway.

The Preparatory School caters for boys from Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds) to Year 6 (12 year olds).

The Preparatory School shares the same 320 acre site as the Senior School.

On the recommendation of the Head of School, Preparatory School students enjoy preferred entry to the Senior School in Year 7. As competition for places in Year 7 is significant, parents often seek an entry point at either Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten or Year 5. Being part of King’s, the Preparatory School embraces the same mission statement as the Senior School.

The King’s School, Preparatory School has a proud history of providing an outstanding education for boys. As the oldest independent boys’ school in Australia, we are in the unique position of being able to draw upon a wealth of experience, built up over many years, of how boys learn best. As the world changes rapidly, we not only celebrate our heritage, but also continue to evolve and innovate in order that our boys receive an education that engages, challenges and inspires.

The School enjoys outstanding facilities and resources to support the learning of our boys, whether this be in the academic, social, emotional or physical domains. As an International Baccalaureate World School, we utilise the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to guide us. This is packaged together with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabus in a manner that challenges students to ask important questions, build skills, conduct in-depth research, analyse findings, build conceptual understandings, share their learning in a variety of ways and reflect on their responsibility as part of a global community.

Each boy is encouraged and supported to discover and fulfil his unique potential within a balanced, boy-friendly program that nurtures the whole person – mind, body and soul.

Within our overarching framework, character education is of particular importance to us; hence, a King’s education infuses opportunities for boys to learn about Christian values through their learning experiences in the classroom, their interactions with each other in the School yard and in the way that they engage with the world. Highly trained and dedicated teachers provide engaging and stimulating programs that strive to cater for the needs of all boys.

We believe that the best way to support our boys is in partnership with their parents. This occurs most effectively through open and honest communication.

Our School

Our Educational Philosophy

Our educational philosophy is built on the premise that a boy needs to be equipped to become a life-long learner. We want the boys to acquire skills, be creative and solve problems. We also want them to be young men of great character, integrity, confidence and poise, ready to make a significant contribution within society.

To achieve this, the boys participate in a program designed to foster academic achievement, physical and spiritual development, and social responsibility.

During their time at King’s, boys will build on their natural strengths and talents. Just as importantly, they will also be encouraged to develop new skills.

Our Teachers

The teacher who can establish a strong relationship with a boy, who can discover and develop their interests and passions, who can inspire and enrich their wondering, the teacher who can laugh with a boy, who can correct a boy, while still conveying a sense that he is valued – that’s the type of teacher we encourage here at King’s.

Academic Excellence

The King’s School has a long and respected record of academic excellence, emphasising a balance between knowledge acquisition, skill development, and values. Our Preparatory School is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The programme fosters global perspectives by placing students at the forefront of their learning journey through a guided inquiry approach.

In line with the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA), the programme aims for a balance between gaining knowledge, developing skills and concepts, and instilling important values.

Our students learn through six Units of Inquiry which bring together a range of disciplines, including Science, History, Geography, the Arts and Physical Education.

Each Unit of Inquiry is developed within one of the following themes:

• Who we are

• Where we are in place and time

• How the world works

• How we express ourselves

• Sharing the planet

• How we organise ourselves

Throughout the programme, boys acquire social skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skills. They are encouraged to take responsible action as a result of their learning.

Our boys also take part in Music, Visual Arts, Woodwork, Physical Education, Biblical Studies, Mandarin and STEM classes. Many of these classes are taught by subject specialists. Information and digital literacy (technology) is considered an essential tool to enhance learning.

Learning is most effective when its purpose is understood and when studies are integrated with the real world. Therefore, it is fully integrated into a boy’s life at King’s.

Enrichment and Extension

At The King’s School, we understand that every boy requires differentiated instruction to meet his unique learning strengths, needs and preferences.

The Enrichment and Extension program caters for gifted students through one-on-one teaching or small group instruction. A specialised Enrichment and Extension teacher works with identified students to provide challenging resources and rigorous learning experiences to cater to their level of thinking and to sustain their passion for learning. Involvement in these enrichment sessions is fluid, depending on the needs of the child and the areas of learning that require focus.

The Enrichment and Extension teacher also works to ensure that the classroom curriculum is differentiated so that gifted students are catered for during classroom lessons. Identified students may also have to access problem-solving opportunities and external competitions to suit their needs. These may include the DaVinci Decathlon, Maths Challenge, Maths Olympiad and Write a Book in a Day projects.

Educational Support Services

Our Educational Support Services (ESS) program is designed for students who are identified as requiring extra assistance with their learning.

Involvement in support sessions is fluid, depending on the needs of the child and the areas of learning that require focus. We use a range of instructional strategies, including flexible grouping, personalised content, and carefully designed resources to meet every boy’s individual learning needs. Each boy within each classroom receives differentiated instruction designed to foster his academic growth.

In addition to individualised and small group instruction during the school day, the ESS program offers:

Early Birds: Where students work on individualised goals, with one-on-one assistance before school.

Home Learning Club: For students who need support completing their homework with guidance from teachers and assistants. Students may stay after school and complete their assigned tasks in a quiet, supportive environment.

Specialist Support: The Preparatory School has Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Educational Psychologists, who are available to provide assessment and/or support, upon referral from the ESS staff.

The International Baccalaureate ® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Character Development

The Co-Curricular program is an integral part of the Preparatory School and offers opportunities for boys to develop a variety of important life skills.

Throughout their time at the Preparatory School, each boy will:

• experience opportunities to develop and demonstrate leadership

• be challenged and extended

• experience failure as well as success

• assist others to overcome fears and disappointment

• understand how to be a team member and a team leader

These life skills are developed through a variety of clubs and activities, compulsory sport in Years 3 to 6, an extensive music program, a unique outdoor education program, camps, and academic teams such as chess, debating and the daVinci Decathlon.

The co-curricular programs build upon the expansive academic program that incorporates indoor and outdoor learning. They are designed to shape the development of each boy’s character and leadership skills, so that he can make an outstanding impact for the good of society.

At King’s, we believe it is important to develop good values and positive character traits in our boys. The Preparatory School uses a learner profile that describes the sort of boy we

wish to develop.

We seek to develop students who are principled, caring, open-minded, balanced, reflective, inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers and knowledgeable.

Boys at The King’s School, Preparatory School are also expected to learn about and follow the broader School Values of Excellence, Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, Honesty, Humility, Gratitude and Respect.

Sport Program

King’s boys enjoy their sport. It is an activity that teaches teamwork, resilience and courage. Sport is one of the few arenas left where a boy may test himself and develop his character through physical endeavour.

Given that all students at King’s engage in sport, significant resources are invested in our sporting program. Facilities across the Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 campus include extensive playing fields, cricket nets, tennis courts, a strength and conditioning centre, indoor sports centre, rowing facilities, rifle range, basketball courts, a 25 metre swimming pool and an Olympic swimming pool. Participation in sport is considered an important part of our educational offering, and all boys from Year 3 to Year 12 are required to attend weekly sports practice and engage in Saturday sport.

In the Preparatory School, boys select a summer and a winter sport. The usual range of options include:

• Summer sports: basketball, cricket, tennis (Years 5 and 6)

• Winter sports: rugby union or football (soccer)

In addition, students participate in athletics, cross country and swimming. During winter, selected students also compete for King’s in snowsports.

Sports coaching is undertaken by classroom teachers who have a personal interest in sport. These staff are assisted by specialist coaches and consultants employed by the School. The Preparatory School is a member of the Independent Primary Schools Heads Association (IPSHA) that organises interschool sporting competitions. Senior School students are part of the AAGPS sporting organisation that provides boys with some of the most keenly contested schoolboy sporting competitions in the country. These associations provide pathways to state and national teams.

Music

The Preparatory School offers a vibrant music program. Our team of professional musicians and music educators work tirelessly to inspire young musicians in the School. A rigorous class teaching program, a wide ranging instrumental program and a vibrant ensemble program injects music into the life of each boy. All boys participate in music lessons, many of which make use of our purpose-built Music Centre. Boys have access to a wide range of classroom and orchestral instruments, and engage in listening, composing and performing. The ensemble program typically includes Concert Band, Intermediate Band, String Orchestra, String Quartets and Trios, Flute Ensemble, Theory Groups, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Infants String group and Guitar Ensemble.

The voice is used as one of the key teaching tools in the Preparatory School. All boys are encouraged to sing, and to sing well. Through a varied concert schedule, boys are given opportunities to perform in a variety of choral groups, including the Chamber Choir and Horrocks Choir.

From time to time, the Music program is enriched through the involvement of professional composers who work with our boys on compositions. We are also a regular participant in Sydney’s major eisteddfods. Performing at such events broadens the musical horizons of our young musicians.

The blend of a well-resourced Department, a stimulating program and a supportive parent body, fosters a lifelong love of music in our boys.

Outdoor Education

The King’s School campus offers a wonderful opportunity for the boys to take advantage of the unique natural environment of the School. As part of the Preparatory School curriculum, each student from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in the Outdoor Education Program linked to their Unit of Inquiry.

The program provides opportunities that are challenging and take the boys out of their comfort zone and gives them an appreciation for the environment.

Activities include:

• Indoor rock climbing

• Canoeing

• Mountain bike riding

• Introduction to skiing and snowboarding skills

• Orienteering

• Bush craft and discovery

• Team building

All of these activities increase physical, mental, social and emotional health.

Co-Curricular Activities

Boys in Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 have a specialised program that finishes at 4.00pm each day with the exception of Thursdays. Any boy remaining after this time will be accompanied to After School Care. The King’s School offers a guaranteed After School Care position for all students (charges apply).

On Thursdays, the specialised program is finished by 3.00pm. Any boy remaining after this time will be accompanied to After School Care.

Each and every afternoon, boys from Years 3 to 6 are provided with an opportunity to remain at School and continue their learning outside of the classroom. All boys will have a sport training session one afternoon a week.

The School offers a number of After School Activities and clubs from 3.15pm – 4.45pm including:

Agriculture Club: Boys have the opportunity to gain handson experience in growing produce and tending to small livestock. The boys learn about sustainability, how food is grown, where it comes from, what seasonal produce is, and responsibility in looking after animals and importantly how to grow food and take the produce to the table to eat.

Art Club: After School art classes are designed for boys who enjoy making and creating artworks. The classes aim to provide a skills based program. The students explore a wide range of materials and techniques as they create a variety of drawings, paintings and sculptures.

Chess: Boys from Years 1 to 6 have the opportunity of receiving weekly chess coaching, by staff from The Sydney Academy of Chess (SAC). Boys can be selected to represent the School Chess Team where they compete in the NSW Junior Chess League Competition (NSWJCL) each Friday afternoon in Terms 2 and 3.

Debating: All boys from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in the School’s Public Speaking and Poetry Recitation Competitions. Selected students in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in IPSHA and ISDA Debating Interschool Competitions, and the cross campus Sloane Cup.

Free Play: Boys are supervised to play ball games outdoors.

Home Learning: Boys complete homework under teacher and assistant supervision.

Information Computer Technology (ICT) Club: Boys experiment with and build their functional use of desktop and cloud based applications. The boys have access to a range of platforms to build, print and apply basic coding features. This is also a club where boys can relax, play games and

share their experiences alongside each other in a monitored, supportive environment.

Mandarin: Boys participate in an authentic Chinese cultural learning and language experience.

Robotics Club: Boys become involved in the world of robotics. Meeting weekly, students develop their building, coding, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Woodwork Club: Boys have the opportunity to build various items. These can include Thor’s hammer, boxes, chests and wooden toys.

Musicals

The Preparatory School provides boys in Years 5 and 6 an opportunity to be a part of a musical.

Directed by staff of The King’s School, Preparatory School, with the Head of Music being responsible for all of the music, these musicals are of an exceptional standard for Primary children.

Professional sound technicians are employed to ensure all boys are heard on stage and with the wonderful assistance of staff and boys’ family members, are fitted out in spectacular costumes.

All boys audition for a part on stage or to assist with the building of props and backdrops, or to assist backstage or with lighting and sound.

The Preparatory School Fathers’ Association supports each musical with a very large and generous donation which pays for the script and any copyright payments, costuming and more recently with the incredible electronic backdrop screen.

Christian Community

Good schools become great schools when they embed worthy values.

The Preparatory School is a community where boys persevere, flourish, develop resilience, and enjoy a strong sense of belonging. We know that boys feel secure when expectations are clear and consistent. We recognise the importance of inclusive, transparent behaviour management, and, we understand that academic success is intrinsically intertwined with emotional and social wellbeing.

Over many years, we have developed a positive and proactive approach to wellbeing – focusing on a child’s strengths, not their weaknesses. We engage in adventurous learning experiences and develop relationships that build character. By discovering, developing and making the most of personal strengths, boys are encouraged to maximise opportunities and become engaged, confident, satisfied and productive. The School holds a strong conviction that a parent and school partnership is essential for an all-encompassing King’s journey for every boy.

Wellbeing

Class teachers are the main pastoral carers for our boys. Each boy is also a member of a House group where he is cared for by his Housemaster and House staff. The Deputy Head – Students and Community, also works closely with class teachers, House staff, boys and families to nurture the needs of each boy.

There are a number of specialist staff, such as the Associate Chaplain, School Counsellor, Prep Sergeant and School Nurse who assist where required.

Additionally, buddy systems operate to support our PreKindergarten and Kindergarten students and any new boys who may join the School.

Spiritual Program

The King’s School gladly welcomes students and families of all faiths, or no faith, and every cultural background. We believe that Jesus Christ came to earth for the benefit of every tribe, nation and tongue. We also believe in the biblical concept of hospitality and care for others. Additionally, we believe that God has displayed his abundant diversity and creativity in his creation, including humanity. Therefore, as a Christian school, in the Reformed Anglican evangelical tradition, we encourage admissions from all members of our society and hold that the Bible is the Word of God, that Jesus Christ is his son, and seek to advance the gospel as explained in the Nicean Creed. Students, staff and community members are encouraged to develop their faith, be ethical in their actions and adopt values that are worthy of them. The Christian community of King’s is nurtured by our Chaplaincy team. This team incorporates Chaplains, Biblical Studies teachers, Youth Ministers and a range of others dedicated to meeting the spiritual needs of our boys.

A vibrant congregation is also based at King’s that offers Christian fellowship not just to boys, but also to parents, staff and friends of the School. All our Kingsmen participate in Biblical Studies and Christian worship. This worship often takes place in our delightful sandstone Chapel, which was consecrated in 1889 at the School’s former site in central Parramatta before being moved to its current site at North Parramatta in 1971.

Our Community

We do not just enrol students at King’s, we enrol families. Parents are essential partners in the learning process and parental involvement with the School is welcomed and celebrated.

The coordination of parents, teachers and students in this calling helps create a very caring community.

The Preparatory School Fathers’ Association plays a very active role in supporting the Preparatory School. It engages in a variety of activities including Year Dinners, a Trivia Night, seminars on fathering and by helping out on the Saturday canteen. Together with The King’s School Family and Friends Association, these parent groups help foster a strong sense of membership within the School community. Each class also has designated representatives, the Class Mums’ group, who assist with planning and communicating between school and home.

There are many other community groups that welcome parental involvement. These range from sports clubs, music groups to various hobby groups. The School also welcomes King’s families for worship on Sunday at The King’s Community Church. In addition, parents are often represented on the School’s various governing and fundraising committees.

Seldom would a week go by without there being some opportunity for parents and friends of the School to be engaged in some activity at King’s. We love this involvement. It transforms our School into a caring and unique community where everyone can flourish.

Areas of Leadership

Boys’ Education

At King’s, we understand boys and we know how they learn best. The teaching approach we adopt is boy-friendly and crafted around their needs. Boys’ education is an area in which King’s has taken a leading role in Australia and overseas. The School has published books, partnered with universities to conduct research into boys’ education, hosted national conferences on boys’ education, and been an advisor to the Federal Government in this area.

Student Leadership

The Preparatory School nurtures student leadership through a House structure, that embodies a Student Patrol Leader program where student leaders have authentic opportunities to develop their leadership skills. Patrol Leaders work with Housemasters and House Captains to assist with organisational and pastoral management. Buddy systems also operate to help new students settle in at Prep.

Year 5 students participate in a Unit of Inquiry to learn about leadership. They benefit from leadership workshops run by The King’s School, Tudor House and Tara Anglican School for Girls. Year 6 students also have a leadership training day with the three schools. The Year 6 PYP Exhibition and Enterprise Gold Awards are two further avenues that develop student leadership skills.

In the Senior School, boys go onto further leadership training that includes at least two years’ service in the Cadet Corps, engagement with social service initiatives and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. Other opportunities include the ‘Boys to Men Program’, overseas language exchange program and Monitor training.

The Enterprise Gold Award

The Enterprise Gold Award is undertaken by the boys in Year 6. It is a highlight of the boys’ Preparatory School experience.

The Enterprise Gold Award is designed to develop independence in boys and equip them with a number of essential life skills.

There are five areas that make up the Enterprise Gold Award:

• The Major Project – where boys are challenged to create something of worth. When undertaking this project, boys are encouraged to develop new skills.

• Domestic activities – which requires the boys to prepare and deliver three family meals, take responsibility for bed making, dressing appropriately, managing personal hygiene and general organisation.

• Communication – where boys prepare and deliver a presentation.

• School knowledge – that requires students to undertake research into their School, being Australia’s oldest independent school.

• Community service – where boys undertake community service that will benefit someone or an organisation beyond the direct family.

Successful completion of the tasks above earn boys an invitation to the Enterprise Camp. The Enterprise Camp is a wonderful Outdoor Education experience undertaken at the end of the school year. Boys are required to camp together in House groups where they partake in various outdoor learning experiences and develop skills in leadership, independence, responsibility, initiative and collaborative problem solving.

Preparatory School Facilities

The boys enjoy an expansive parkland setting. The 320 acres of grounds provide a wonderful environment in which to learn.

The Preparatory School is a place where boys are free to be boys - where they can run, play, explore and engage in learning. The Preparatory School facilities are among the best in Australia. Classrooms are modern, spacious and wonderfully resourced. They are fully equipped with excellent ICT facilities, including interactive whiteboards, and one-to-one technology devices.

Specialised classroom learning areas have also been developed for Science, Languages Other Than English, Visual Arts and Woodwork. The Music Centre is big enough to cater for large group rehearsals, and also includes a number of individual lesson/practice rooms, instrument storage and office spaces.

The Dalleywater Centre possesses large flexible learning spaces for multiple class groupings whilst also housing the Library, teaching spaces and a theatrette.

Horrocks Hall is a multi purpose venue with a seating capacity of over 600. It is used for numerous events throughout the year, including assemblies, Chapel Services, musical productions and performances.

The Preparatory School sporting facilities are of the highest standard. Resources include: five fields, turf cricket wickets, basketball courts, tennis courts, cricket nets, a 25 metre swimming pool and a community pavilion.

The Preparatory School also has full access to the Senior School facilities, specialist subject teaching areas, the Centre for Learning and Leadership, Futter Hall with a seating capacity of 1,100, the King’s Theatre and Drama Centre, the Science Centre and research facility, 50 metre swimming pool, gymnasium, Museum, Dining Hall, stock yards, agricultural plots and bushland.

The beautiful School Chapel sits at the heart of our community and serves all of the students and the broader King’s community.

It is an honour and privilege to welcome you as we journey together to educate your son.

Owing to the reputation of The King School, there are characteristically more boys applying for a place than there are places available. All applications are considered on their merit. However, not all applicants will receive an interview.

The Enrolment Journey

Entry points at The King’s School are Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds), Kindergarten, Year 5, and Year 7. Casual vacancies may occur in intervening year levels.

Families are encouraged to discuss potential positions with the School at any year level. Enquiries can be directed to the Preparatory School Admissions Manager or Head of Admissions.

Prospective families are invited to register their interest in the School by submitting a completed Registration Form, which can be obtained from the School website. Applications should be supported by copies of recent School reports, NAPLAN assessments, and any other supportive testimonials.

If there are places available, families may be invited to meet for a family interview. The family interview is an important part of our enrolment process as we discuss the hopes and aspirations your family has for your son, and his learning journey.

If a place at King’s is offered, both parents and/or legal guardian will be required to sign the Acceptance Form. This becomes the binding contract between the School and the family. A non-refundable admission fee is then payable and the place is confirmed.
