P

oets love spring for a reason: those darling buds, that scent of sun-warmed earth, the flickers of rapturous possibility. It also represents the kick-start of a new style season (#yasss). Get ready for Spring 2016’s most glorious looks: Lacoste’s high-shine silver overalls, Erdem’s boho-meets-Victoriana dresses and the light-as-air lacetrimmed negligees at Alexander Wang. The beauty looks are equally outstanding: Take the OTT neon liner at Giambattista Valli, which conjures images of modern Holly Golightlys alighting from Ubers in the glow of dawn, trailing glitter and reckless glamour. For this issue of The Kit Compact, our fashion editor, Jillian Vieira, and our beauty editor, Rani Sheen, divided the season into five key style personalities, which they delve into in our definitive trend report (“Spring Break,” page 25). We also spotlight spring’s sculptural ruffles and bows, as worn by Toronto actor Sarah Gadon, who herself has wit, charm and a face lovely enough to spark spontaneous verse. I hope you find this season as exciting as we do. Let me know what you think by connecting on Twitter @Laura_deCarufel. I always love hearing from you.

OUT & ABOUT WHAT SHOULD I DO AT FASHION WEEK? FALL HEAD OVER HEELS

WE

Forget eggs. Go hunting for handmade wares this Easter at the One of a Kind Show, March 23 to 27, at the Enercare Centre (100 Princes’ Blvd.). More than 450 vendors will be selling jewellery, skincare, pet bandanas—you name it. On March 23, take a break from shopping to check out workshops on making paper flowers, or learn calligraphy and watercolour basics on March 24.

EXPERIENCE: JOIN THE OUTSIDERS

“If you didn’t take the picture, you weren’t there,” the OG of street photography, Gary Winogrand, once said. His trenchant work—along with seminal pieces from Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, Danny Lyon and Gordon Parks—is on view at the AGO (317 Dundas St. W.) from March 12 to May 29 for Outsiders: American Photography and Film, 1950s–1980s.

If you missed the Scandinavian supper by Uncle Smoke and Odin Café (514 King St. W.) last month, the next round is taking place on March 20. Don’t worry, Mr. Mayor, we got you. 1. Catch runway regs Sid Neigum and Mikhael Kale on opening night (March 14). 2. See Ellie Mae debut her eponymous jacket label on March 15. 3. Stop by Toronto Fashion Incubator’s on-site trade show on March 16 and 17—look out for Opelle and Peggy Sue Collection.

ANDRA DAY

Andra Day’s voice could give you goosebumps in a heat wave—and her retro look (poppy lip courtesy of M.A.C’s Lady Danger lipstick) is almost as compelling as her Amy-Winehouse-style chords. Though she graces Marc Jacobs’s Spring 2016 ad campaign, she actually got teased as a teen. “People always ask me, ‘Did you dress like this in high school?’ and I’m like, ‘Are you crazy— people already made fun of me,” she said with a laugh when we caught up with her at Analogue Gallery during her last visit to the city. Well, no one’s teasing now. See for yourself when Day performs at the Mod Club (722 College St.) on March 17.

RUN THE WORLD:

GIRLS

According to the World Economic Forum, global gender parity won’t happen until 2133. (So, more than a century from now.) Since the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day (March 8) is #PledgeForParity, it’s time to lay down the law—à la J.Law Lenny Letter.

March 12 BadBadNotGood, Toronto’s jazz trio to beat, is performing at the Danforth Music Hall with Marvel Alexander and “special guests.” (Ghostface Killah, please be you.)

March 17 Started in Quebec and now it’s here: 176-year-old department store Simons opens in Square One’s new wing, bringing Smythe, Paul & Joe and MO & Co. Edition 10.

Baseball season is just a month away. Take a break from practising your celebratory bat flip to catch pitch-perfect drama Moneyball at the TIFF Bell Lightbox (350 King St. W.) on M a rc h 2 8 . A s p a r t of TIFF’s B ooks on Film series, producer Rachael Horovitz will discuss the flick and take questions from the audience. (“What does Brad smell like? Asking for a friend…”)

March 17 Activist and co-founder of Occupy Wall Street Micah White will speak at the Toronto Reference Library to promote The End of Protest, his new manifesto on modern dissent.

March 20 Check out the Winter Stations Design Competition, which saw seven lifeguard towers in the Beaches transformed into playful art installations, before it closes.

March 24 How many days did it take for Kate Hudson to lose a guy? For a romcom trivia bonanza, head to the Revue cinema and compete for a grand prize of $100 and eight movie passes.

MOST WANTED The It bag of the season is ladylike on top—and wild at heart Once considered a staple of the straitlaced upper crust, the top-handle bag is finally letting its freak flag fly. Fashion’s biggest players—Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Dolce & Gabbana, among them—embraced contradiction, affixing prim grips to bold bodies. Glossy, orbed leather, colourblocked snakeskin and striking nautical stripes rule the season. So consider it confirmed: Opposites really do attract.

We’ll admit that, yes, sometimes fashion deserves its impractical rep (lest we forget each and every Comme des Garçons show). But this season, function came to the forefront. The grommet—known for providing reinforcement on basically every useful item—found new and beautiful purpose on the runways: as the stage for dramatic bows at Proenza Schouler, as biker-babe detailing at J. Mendel and even as raincoat decor at Hunter. (Okay, maybe they’re not always practical.)

How to use them: Dilute a capful of the antioxidant-andlactic-acid-packed liquid in a bowl of clean water, stir, then pat the mixture onto cleansed skin. BEAUTY FIX MAKEUP MISTAKES HAPPEN. THESE THREE EASY SOLUTIONS HELP YOU LOOK LIKE YOU JUST LEFT A MAKEUP ARTIST’S CHAIR

It’s a scientific fact (at least to us!) that women feel more confident when they feel good about how they look. The perfect power shade of lipstick or a gorgeous smokey eye hold the key to a knock ‘em dead, girl-boss attitude. It pays to have a little extra help so that you look (and feel) your best. Enter KNOW Cosmetics and three game-changing beauty solutions.

1

PUCKER POWER

Imagine not having to worry about bleeding or feathering lip colours. (Amazing, right?) With No Bleeding Lips, your ravishing red lipstick or pretty pink gloss won’t budge. This clear lip liner eliminates the need to find the exact lip liner match and lets you play with any shade of the rainbow, from the deepest plum to a sophisticated beige. Keep your lipstick or gloss where it should be—on your lips.

3

QUICK FIX

Looking for a kissable pout? No Thin Lips is a lip-enhancing treatment that plumps for a glamorous, sensual look. Aloe oil and vitamin E keep lips soft while the clear gloss-type solution means you can wear it on its own, or apply your favourite lipstick over top. Talk about win-win.

2

BRIGHT EYES

Late nights often result in dark under-eye circles—the most complicated beauty issue to fix without the right concealer. The silky, lightweight, waterproof formula of No Dark Shadows offers coverage in two shades (for rosy or yellow undertones), and it conceals as beautifully as it highlights. For intensive coverage, use it under the eyes; to even out skin tone, dot it on imperfections. Add it to the planes of the face to help highlight cheekbones, the brow bone and even the Cupid’s bow. Now that’s beauty double duty.

MODERN MASTERS Oh, this old thing? We asked Toronto’s most stylish fashion illustrators to imagine themselves in standout Spring 2016 looks By Veronica Saroli

Laura Gulshani in Chanel

Stephanie McKay in Chloé

Sharmaine Sermonia in Proenza Schouler

It took Gulshani, 23 (a former Kit intern), years to feel confident enough in her artistic abilities to share her vibrant runway portraits with the world. “I just joined Instagram last year because, before, I didn’t want people to know I could draw,” she says.

Trained in classical-realism style, McKay, 26, is now captivated by sketching fanciful haute couture. “For me, the most intriguing part of the artistic process was learning how to simplify things.”

Sermonia, 21, grew up in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines and taught herself to draw out of loneliness. “A lot of my drawings are from childhood memories,” she says. Now, her friends (and patrons) are asking for Sermonia originals.

Stefanie Ayoub in Calvin Klein STEFANIEAYOUB.COM

KSENIASAPUNKOVA.COM

“My dad’s an artist,” says Teng, 29, “and ever since I can remember I’ve had a paintbrush in my hand.” As for her own style: “I like to draw fast because I’m trying to capture abstract feelings more than details.”

Stints in garment design in Paris and New York helped Ayoub, 25, realize drawing was her passion. “The designer I worked for in Paris did beautiful illustrations to accompany her designs, and I thought that seems much more interesting than sitting at a sewing machine.”

Sapunkova, 26, who originally studied sculpture in her native Ukraine, uses the analogy of court sketches to describe her work as an illustrator. “In court, you don’t take photographs, but you focus on things that happened, like facial expressions or hand gestures. Fashion illustration simplifies what you see.”

Striped nails = a unique take on minimalism. Sally Hansen global colour ambassador Madeline Poole striped it up this season: At 3.1 Phillip Lim, she used silver tape for ultraclean “athletic” lines, nipping the ends with cuticle clippers; at Tanya Taylor she freehanded skinny and thick stripes for a ’90s effect.

IT ACCESSORY Fa s h i o n ’ s l a t e s t d a r l i n g , Jonathan Anderson of Loewe fame, is responsible for the season’s most covetable accessory: a fish out of water, dangling on a gold line.

EYES ON THE PRIZE She’s shared onscreen chemistry with Robert Pattinson and danced on a yacht on the French Riviera. But Toronto’s Sarah Gadon isn’t a starry-eyed ingenue. The actor—seen here in spring’s textural ruffles and bows—knows exactly what she wants Photography by Norman Wong Fashion direction by Jillian Vieira Story by Olivia Stren

It’s a sunless afternoon in an industrial pocket of Toronto’s west end, where featureless concrete facades outnumber trees, people and anything easy on the eyes. Behind one of them, in a stark studio, Sarah Gadon is being photographed for The Kit Compact. Meeting the actor here, resplendent in Spring 2016’s beribboned and bowed runway looks, seems improbable, like encountering a tulip in the tundra. Gadon, who was recently hand-picked by Giorgio Armani to be the global face of his cosmetics line, is destabilizingly lovely. She has crystalline blue eyes and the kind of lit-from-within complexion that would make a white swan look swarthy. Her Hitchcockian blonde beauty could be chilly—there is coldness in perfection—but Gadon also manages warmth. Not to mention intelligence. She can talk about film theory without sounding pretentious—how’s that for improbable? Gadon, it turns out, has long excelled at the unlikely: Her first role was as a farm animal. She got her start at the age of 7 as a junior—very junior—associate at the National Ballet of Canada when James Kudelka cast her as a lamb in a production of The Nutcracker. “I remember the feeling of going on stage and looking out into the darkness,” says the Toronto-born 28-year-old. “It was a really powerful experience, and I just knew in that moment that I wanted to be a performer.” Her parents supported creative expression and let her “dabble” but weren’t going to encourage her to become the next child starlet. When she finished high school at Toronto’s Claude Watson School for the Arts, she announced: “I’m moving to L.A.” Her parents made an announcement of their own: “No, you’re not.”

Instead, in 2006, Gadon moved to the somewhat less glamorous Kingston, Ont., to study film at Queen’s University, before transferring to U of T, where she fell in love with auteur filmmaking. Among her heroes are French director Agnès Varda and Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel, both celebrated for their subtle exploration of the female perspective. This resonated with Gadon, who is well versed in the struggles young female actors face to be taken seriously. “The only thing that’s available to you is to be an ingenue—and I didn’t identify with being an ingenue,” she says. “I was like, ‘I’d like to work with super-dark directors like David Cronenberg and do extremely intellectual films.’ I wanted to contribute to a filmmaker’s body of work, the kind of body of work that people would study.” She got her wish. Cronenberg cast her in 2011’s A Dangerous Method alongside Michael Fassbender, followed by Cosmopolis with Robert Pattinson and Maps to the Stars with Julianne Moore. It was a hugely exciting time— Gadon’s first serious film roles introduced her to the festival circuit and its red carpets—but she emphasizes that she wasn’t suddenly drowned by a flood of offers. “It was the beginning of what I imagine most careers are: slow and steady, hopefully.” Now, though, her momentum is picking up speed. When we speak again, a few weeks after the shoot, Gadon has just returned from Sundance, where two of her latest projects premiered. (She also managed to pop in at Lena Dunham’s “Women Rewriting Hollywood” luncheon.) She sounds energized. “Sundance was a real ride. It was incredible. I’m still processing it.” Her first project is the eight-part Hulu series 11.12.63, based on the Stephen King novel, executive produced by Lost alum J.J. Abrams and co-starring James Franco. The second, Indignation, a film based on the Philip Roth novel and slated for release later this year, was critically lauded and picked up by big distributors right after its premiere, where Gadon sparkled in a sleek metallic coat by Thom Browne.

Indignation, an emotionally freighted drama exploring the existential torment of the 1950s college experience, allowed Gadon to delve into the kind of research she loves. In preparing for her role as Olivia Hutton, a bright but anguished student, Gadon read a great deal of American poet and novelist Sylvia Plath, who was Roth’s inspiration. Gadon’s character, like Plath, is an outsider. “She’s a bright, forwardthinking young mind coming against the ideologies and power structures of the time, and I very much feel that Sylvia Plath went through that same struggle,” Gadon says. It’s hard to imagine talented, confident Gadon relating to the outsider experience, but add that to the pile of improbabilities. “It’s a part of growing up, of that natural social assimilation that you have to go through in order to become a member of this society,” she says, and pauses. “I also do feel that I’m still an outsider—I’m very much outside of Hollywood.” That distance—from L.A., a place, she says, that runs on hype—is something Gadon is currently delighting in. Living in Toronto keeps her grounded. To illustrate her point, she recalls a recent trip to Cannes: “One minute you’re dancing with a movie star, the next you’re on [Microsoft co-founder] Paul Allen’s yacht, and then Peter Lindbergh is shooting you on a beach.” Arriving home after this Felliniesque sojourn, she went straight from the airport to her parents’ house. “I got out of the car and my dad said to me, ‘Look at this driveway! I just had it repaved!’ All he wanted to do was talk about the driveway.” It’s not surprising, then, that Gadon is refreshingly practical about her work. “In a way, you’re always at the beginning,” she says. “There’s this constant cycle of rejection. Putting yourself out there, making yourself vulnerable—all of those things are always there when you’re an actor. For anyone who is self-employed or works contract to contract, I don’t think that anxiety ever truly goes away. You just handle it better.” She seems, frankly, to be handling things quite nicely.

VALENTINE’S DAY 2016

THEKITCA

When Toronto-based actor Sarah Gadon got a call out of the blue with the news that she had been tapped to be the global face of Giorgio Armani Beauty, her mind went to one of her favourite fi lmmakers. “It was like being swept up into a Fellini movie of absurd beauty and wonder,” she says animatedly, perched on a sofa in her office for the day—a swanky suite in the Four Seasons Toronto. “I ran around my house screaming and jumping up and down.” Things only became more cinematic from there. “I flew to Milan for the 40th-anniversary tribute and I met Mr. Armani. I went to the atelier and got this beautiful dress, and I went to the party, and there was this giant receiving line, and there he was. I was so nervous. He doesn’t speak English, so he just laughed, grabbed my hand and twirled me around in front of all these photographers. That was the most Fellini point of the entire interaction.” Continued on page 4

CUT LOOSE Actor Lucy Hale isn’t hiding behind her hair anymore

By Laura deCarufel Photography by Christopher Wahl

SHORT CUTS my blowout strategy Need further proof that Lucy Hale is a pro? This shoot took less than six minutes.

In most ways, Lucy Hale is not #justlikeus. She stars on the teen smash Pretty Little Liars; she recently wrapped her first film; and when she tweets, her nearly five million followers respond with rhapsodic emojis. Like many women, though, Hale is pretty obsessed with her hair. “I always have been,” says Hale, 26, her voice even softer than on TV, her eyes somehow more enormous and her frame more slight—like a gazelle in leather shorts. At 13, Hale’s idea of hair perfection was long and straight. “For years, I’d sleek-iron my hair, and it went halfway down my back,” remembers Hale, who is at Hudson’s Bay in Toronto for a whirlwind 24 hours to promote Blowpro, the haircare line of which she is the very pretty face. “My dad would do my ponytail, and if there were bumps, I’d THEKIT.CA | MARCH 2016 |

be like, ‘Um, Dad, we need to start again.’” (A 2003 clip from American Juniors shows a teenage Hale with a crisp part and a polished low pony—very Dior Spring 2016.) Then, a few years ago, something changed: “I’d thought of my hair like a security blanket—I’d used it to cover my face—but I suddenly felt the urge to chop it off.” She started slowly: first trimming one inch, then three. Now, she has a textured, chin-length bob that elicits adoration on social (sample tweet: “You inspired me to cut my hair and I love it so much omg”). “It is addictive,” Hale says, laughing. “The cut is edgier and chicer, but it also proved that I had the courage to do it. Really, I’m addicted to being confident.” That daring is mirrored in the hair odyssey of Aria, Hale’s popular PLL character. “Over six years, you grow as a person, so I’m

trying to be more sophisticated with Aria,” Hale explains. When the show kicked off, Aria’s thick hair was streaked with flashes of pink before she turned to a cooler bronde look. “Aria takes risks, so it makes sense that she would be a risk taker with her hair.” Hale is visibly excited about the new PLL season—“The girls are in turmoil, but different turmoil!”—and about her first major film role, in the indie comedy-drama Dude, which hits screens this spring. “It’s a female-driven movie—like Superbad for girls.” Her focus, she says, is firmly on the future, which, in the most immediate sense, includes a public appearance in five minutes, where she will meet with hundreds of very excited fans. “I used to get nervous, but I feel different now,” Hale says with a grin. “Honestly? I feel like a badass.”

“I use leave-in conditioner, then I let my hair air-dry about 40 per cent. I use a texturizing cream and scrunch the hair, then I twist sections under using a blow-dryer. Once it’s dry, I use a straightener to dip and bend.”

my second-day hair hack

“I love Blowpro’s dry shampoo ($25, thebay.com). It’s hard for brunettes to find good dry shampoo, because it can be very powdery, but this is great: light and very texturizing.”

consideration. Nevertheless, I recently embarked on a serious quest to find a fragrance of my own, a special one that would lock onto my pheromones and act as an extension of my body. Unfortunately, Light Blue, so bewitching on my friend, smelled like a truck stop car freshener on me. I tried others—Guerlain’s Shalimar, the hard-to-find Bvlgari Red Tea—but none seemed to achieve the desired effect of amplifying my animal magnetism. Maybe, I hypothesized, my own weak chemistry was at issue. After all, it was never my menstrual cycle other women’s would sync to. Or maybe I was just going about it the wrong way. To test out a more natural, bespoke approach, I visited Toronto’s new Escents Aromatherapy store with a mission to walk out perfectly perfumed. As founder Jacqui MacNeill explained, essential oils have medicinal properties, and their aromas unlock when applied to the bodies that need them most. At her assistant’s urging, I tried a combination of blue camomile and geranium to help soothe my psoriatic elbows. But it was scentless, and I wasn’t in it for the healing; I was there to smell amazing. MacNeill, a glossy entrepreneur with a nose for customer dissatisfaction, stepped back in. “Let’s give you some rose otto,” she said. Her assistant helped me mix it with sandalwood, one of my favourite scents, which I shook into a vial. I rolled it on and: ROSES. My body had become a flower army’s site of chemical warfare; the sandalwood was nowhere to be found. “I like that better than whatever you’ve been wearing,” my boyfriend later remarked. Surely I could do better. So I hit the perfume counters. I knew what I thought I wanted: something musky, woodsy and just a tad horny. Alaïa Paris by Azzedine Alaïa was warmly sweet and spicy, something your Anaïs-Nin-worshipping roommate would dig. By Kilian’s Intoxicated reminded me of silk dressing gowns worn by film noir heroines in their close-ups, while a dab of Les Absolus 1001 Ouds by Annick Goutal made me feel like the type of woman who would casually own a pet leopard, à la Bringing Up Baby. Jazz Club by Maison Martin Margiela, a male-marketed gourmand fragrance, on my wrists smelled about as cool as a Jazz FM sax solo. Then there was Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford: Imagine Eartha Kitt purring for a man with a big cigar, and you’ve got the idea. Finally, I tried on New York Sandalwood by Bond No. 9 and felt like a well-worn leather armchair still warm from the object of my affection. Each was beautiful, but none felt exactly like me. And maybe, argues perfumer and By Kilian founder Kilian Hennessy, that’s just fine. “Like fashion, a fragrance ‘dresses’ you and tells a facet of your personality,” Hennessy told me. “Personally, I believe we should have a wardrobe of scents. I like to play with them the same way I play with any other accessory: shoes, ties, pocket squares, bag. I always choose the perfume of the day last, according to the way I am dressed and the mood I am in.” If you say so, master perfumer. But I’m not so sure my chemical reactions can be as easily swapped in and out as a pair of hoop earrings or platform pumps. I’d like to think my one true fragrance is still somewhere out there, waiting for me.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND ILLUSTRATION: ISTOCK

In my early 20s, I made a friend who was magnetic and difficult and smelled incredible. As booze cast a soft focus over our weekly karaoke nights, she careened from table to beer-dampened table leaving invisible trails of Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue while I ached with the inadequacy of my own scentlessness. I suspect that establishing a signature fragrance happens to many people by accident. It’s easy to understand how a person might be gifted with something that’s easy to wear, spritz it at pulse points and repeat ad infinitum. It’s how you could end up wearing a fragrance considered the domain of 16-year-old basics into your karaoke years—or you could get lucky and find one that really works for you. But the perfect scent isn’t an easy thing to seek out. Perfume is a luxury item that’s unlikely to be picked up on a whim—that’s what lipstick is for. Besides, fragrances can be unkind. Body chemistry, olfactory associations and the particularities of your officemates all have to be taken into
