CURRENT MOOD
I
f this issue has a spirit animal, it’s Anne Shirley, the joyful, flame-haired heroine of Green Gables fame. In the office, we’ve been talking about Anne having a moment since puffed sleeves hit the Fall 2016 runways. (“It is ever so much easier to be good if your clothes are fashionable,” Anne sighs. Totally.) I happened upon a vintage copy of the novel at a lawn sale recently and fell in love with Anne all over again—she’s sweet, feisty and headover-heels in love with the world. You’ll notice Anne’s influence most obviously in “Kindred Spirits” (page 26), a moody paean to summer friendship and pastoral

romance as envisioned by our creative director, Jessica Hotson, with fashion and beauty direction by Jillian Vieira and Rani Sheen, respectively. We shot the story outside Milton—at a farm belonging to the photographers’ grandparents—where, with Rihanna on repeat, our models frolicked in the tall grass, braving snakes, frogs and, for the final shot, frigid pond temps. (#work, right?) Closer to the downtown core, we’ve paid tribute to Anne’s lust for life in our summer handbook (page 35). Executive editor Kathryn Hudson oversaw this unmissable guide to summer in the city featuring bikebasket beauty essentials, boozy slushie recipes and a tour of the best public pools—plus blackbook recos from some of the 6ix’s most stylish locals. Consider it your starting point for the best
summer ever, whether your idea of bliss involves just-cracked oysters and white wine in red plastic cups at Hanlan’s Point, walking through a sunlit canopy of green leaves in Bellwoods or watching the sun dip over the twinkling patio lights at Bandit. (Or, you know, all of the above.) Here at The Kit Compact, we’ll see you next in September, when—huge news!—we’re launching across Canada. Have a beautiful few months and keep in touch @Laura_deCarufel and @TheKit, with #thekitcompact.

FLIGHT OF FANCY ’Tis the season for crisp linens, delicate flounces and…moody brocade? Hear us out: Think of the regal material as an ode to those last moments of dusk on a midsummer’s evening. It channels that magic hour of light when everything is illuminated by a fiery glow against the backdrop of an ever-deepening sky. Want a prefall dose of that wistful vibe? Check out the pattern on Zac Posen’s smoking suit, which mimics a melancholy, chiaroscuro painting—or the luxe, metallic florals set against jet black at Saint Laurent. When you’re famous—like, really famous—booking the right makeup artist can be a critical career move. But Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman doesn’t need anyone’s help. The 19-yearold singer, actor, dancer and model does her own makeup for most major red carpets, hashtagging her Instagram pics with #beatbyzendaya. Her teacher: YouTube. “I just watched a lot of makeup tutorials and videos,” the California native explains during her lunch break from filming K.C. Undercover, her Disney Channel sitcom. “You add a layer of freedom to your look when you start to do things for yourself.” In January, beauty giant CoverGirl noticed Zendaya’s killer DIY looks (and crushing social media presence) and snagged her as its latest spokesmodel. “I’ve always been outspoken—ever since I was in elementary school,” she says. That bold streak is obvious on the red carpet: She’s rocked cornrows at Paris Fashion Week, a David-Bowieinspired mullet wig at the Grammys, a bowl cut at the Met Gala and an intricate braided look for her cameo in Beyoncé’s Lemonade, which she describes as “more than just a Beyoncé video. It was a female empowerment video, it was a black woman empowerment video, it was a socially conscious and aware video.” Zendaya’s experimentation has brought her both fan adoration and

COLOUR ME RAD
It would have been easier to bet on a Kylie-Tyga wedding than guess that London fashion mainstay Ted Baker would take a minimalist design direction. The brand is, after all, a champion of flower prints, ladylike silhouettes and everything pastel. But its new 30-piece Colour By Numbers capsule is focused on streamlined shapes and pared-down prints. The collection—nearly 10 years in the making—includes nautical-esque jumpsuits, toneon-tone slip dresses and modest block heels, making desk-to-dinner dressing a cinch. But fret not: The brand’s whimsical garden-party frocks aren’t going anywhere. It’s all about balance, you know? —Veronica Saroli

LIPSTICK JUNGLE How one beauty ed fared in the wilds of the Amazon
THE NOTES
Orange and lemon essence, aquatic accords, sandalwood THE VERDICT
“It smells a little nostalgic, like the summer, around a campfire with a cocktail. It’s fun and light—a nice fresh, crisp, clean smell. Our original lemonade is my grandmother’s recipe from the 1800s, and it also contains oranges and lemons.” 14
On the eve of its 40th this ye a r, th e B o dy S h o p set itself a #lifegoal: to be the most ethical and sustaina b l e g l o b a l b u s i n e s s by 2020. To see first-hand the ripple effect fair trade has on communities and natural resources, I’m journeying deep into the Peruvian Amazon jungle, where the beauty giant sources brazil nut oil for over 250 of its products. My first night is a pit stop in Lima, dotted with hip districts and colourful craft markets. The next morning, I hop on a puddle jumper flight to Puerto Maldonado, which borders Bolivia and Brazil. Stepping onto the tarmac, I’m hit with thick humidity and the scents of d e nse rainfo re s t . O n e bumpy bus ride and river-
boat journey later, I make it to Posadas Amazonas Ecolodge. The airy thatched-roof structure allows for wideopen views of the brazil nut trees towering above and Day-Glo butterflies. My room has only three walls, so I lie in bed under a mosquito net in the pitch dark listening to monkey calls (there’s no electricity, let alone WiFi, after 10
p.m.). Up at 4 a.m., I hike foggily in my rain boots through mud puddles to a wooden catamaran. The breathtaking sunrise makes the pre-dawn wake-up hella worth it. We sail around calm Tres Chimbadas Lake spotting river otters and giant guinea-piglike capybaras. Next stop: Candela, a non-profit brazil nut processing plant, where I m e e t Yu d i t h C h i n c h ay Chumbe, who’s taking advantage of the fair trade collective’s flexible work hours to study for a master’s degree. At the indigenous brazil nut trading communit y Lago Valencia, I trek through the jungle to see how the nuts are collected from the forest floor. Loose-fitting pants are my friend—mozzies bite through leggings—and my stashable rain jacket comes to the rescue in a downpour (it’s called a rainforest for a reason). Then it’s back on the boat for a five-hour return trip in blazing sun (hello, SPF!). Trekking through the Amazon is no walk in the park, but it is the trip of lifetime. Just pack accordingly— seriously. —Natasha Bruno

LIGHTEN UP 5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BLEACHED BROWS K e n d a l l J e n n e r, Chanel Iman and Cara Delevingne have all rocked bleached brows. The no-brow brow may seem more suited to supermodels than mere mortals, but this otherworldly look is seriously cool. Here’s what you need to know if you want to take the plunge. 1. GO TO A PRO “You could lose your eyesight by using the wrong kind of bleach near your eyes, and if you leave it for too long, the hairs could fall out,” says Maribeth Madron, Maybelline New York’s eyebrow specialist, who suggests lightening brows by just a shade or two. “When I lighten eyebrows professionally, I might put bleach on for one minute to soften the colour and add a highlighted look.” 2. BLONDES WILL HAVE MORE FUN “The more iciness you have in your hair, the more attractive it will be when your eyebrows are lightened,” says makeup artist Victoria Radford, owner of Radford studio in Yorkville. “If you have any warmth in your hair and then you take out the warmth in your eyebrows, it looks like you did a paint-by-numbers.” 3. BLEACH CAN HIDE YOUR REGROWTH “If you’re blonde and trying to grow your eyebrows back in and they look really choppy,
it’s a great way to hide the regrowth,” says Radford. 4. ONCE YOU BLEACH, YOU CAN’T GO BACK “You can try to put the brown back, but it’s always going to look different,” cautions Radford. Madron agrees. “Once they’ve been lightened and you dye them again, if you go to the beach, they’re going to turn red. Just like hair highlights go brassy, your brows will too. Usually you have to wait a full growth cycle of about four months to come back to your natural colour.” 5. BALANCE BLEACHED BROWS WITH MAKEUP “When you mute your eyebrows, you need to make something else pop,” says Radford, advising a bold lipstick or smoky eye. —Julia LeConte If you’re not brave enough to bleach, fake it with makeup—just use a lighter pomade or gel.

FIRST PERSON
RIPE FOR A CHANGE
Tania Dupon-Martinez gets a couple things off her chest just in time for summer Photography by Kristy Wright I’m going to the beach this summer. I’m going to drive to Tobermory and go cliff jumping. I’m going to visit Port Stanley, Grand Bend and Bayfield and swim in the sun. I’ve lived a bikini-less life, but now, at 26, I’m leaving behind that crazy one-piece tan. When you have E-cup breasts, as I did, you’re very exposed in a bikini— it doesn’t hold you in (like, at all) and it also leaves you open to objectifying comments. In university, the club culture came with a specific way of dressing, and even if I wasn’t showing lots of skin, I often felt super-uncomfortable. (In hindsight, I’m happy I gravitated toward the art scene.) Then there’s the back pain. I’m a florist, which is awesome, but it’s also very labour-intensive. I took Tylenol every four hours to deal with chronic aches. I lost weight and exercised to build up certain muscles. Nothing worked—big breasts just run in my family. Then my
doctor asked if I would consider getting a breast reduction. My mom was hesitant because I’d have to go under anaesthetic. I was hesitant because I want to have kids and I would love to breastfeed, which can be tricky after surgery. I considered the cons and weighed them against what I was dealing with every day. After about a year, I was approved by OHIP and slated for surgery. I was nervous—I’d never had surgery for anything, even a broken bone— but also because I was going to wake up and live a huge change I couldn’t undo. I had to take a full six weeks off after the procedure— there was pain, and I was definitely going out of my mind. The whole experience made me reflect on what women go through, how our bodies are treated in public spaces. I wondered, “Am I the only one who feels this way?” I thought when I was recovering that I would wear plunging necklines all the

time, but it turns out I’m still the same person. A year ago, I was vintage shopping and I found this floral shirt that I loved, which fit perfectly except for the button at the chest. I bought it anyway because the price was right, and I thought, “Well, you never know.” Now I’m a 34B and that floral shirt fits perfectly. Even crazier? I’m actually enjoying shopping for bikinis. It’s amazing not to hide behind clothes anymore, to be able to put my shoulders back and meet the world. My partner was away on a trip for a few months when I went in for surgery. It was kind of hilarious when he got back because so much had changed. We were catching up on everything, but also I was like, “Hey! I have new boobs!” Your partner should embrace your body in any form, so I wasn’t too worried about that. In fact, it was almost a reassurance like, “You’re okay with my scars? Okay, you can stick around for a little longer.” The scarring is actually going away— but it hasn’t bothered me. It’s a reminder of how life is crazy. Bodies take on different forms and, over time, bodies change. And right now it’s easier to breathe. —As told to Kathryn Hudson

BEAUTY ADVENTURE
WINDOWS TO THE SEOUL Beauty boutiques fill entire streets in Myeongdong, Seoul
Rani Sheen’s trip to the beauty capital of the world blew her mind—and totally transformed her skincare routine I’m standing in the middle of a bustling pedestrian-only street in Myeongdong, a Seoul shopping district, and there are beauty shops as far as the eye can see: I spy come-hither displays of cushion compacts, tables covered with sheet masks and cardboard cut-outs of shiny-cheeked K-pop boy bands hawking cosmetics to their rabid fans.
S E O U L B E AU T Y L E S S O N S Cosmetic trends rule this city. These are the ones that cannot be ignored 24
SPF IS NON-NEGOTIABLE There’s a reason the BB cream trend hit huge in Korea—it’s basically a very palatable way to wear sunscreen, with skincare benefits and a tint—because no Korean woman would be caught dead without SPF.
The women I pass on the street (and most men) are snail extract serums (snails aren’t harmed, just clearly regular patrons—their brows are groomed followed around for their trails), three-step and full, their lips are ever so slightly tinted and pore-cleansing nose strips, sponge-tipped suntheir skin is incredibly glowy, the light reflecting screens that cool the skin by two degrees, tiny foam rollers for applying foundation and cushion madly off cheekbones, foreheads and noses. WE ALL NEED AN ESSENCE Think of essences as liquid hydrators—they sink into cleansed skin before heavier emulsions and lotions are applied overtop to seal in moisture. Hair essences, like toners for your hair, are also popular.
POWDER IS THE ENEMY Everyone’s skin in Seoul is downright dewy, from teenage girls to TV talk show hosts to middle-aged restaurateurs— even their noses. Blotting paper can be used if necessary, but powder is distinctly uncool.
LIP LINER IS LAME Forget Kylie’s Lip Kit—the gradient lip is king in Seoul. Liner (or any colour that touches the edge of the mouth) is seen as extremely aging, so most girls use only a dab of coral or pink tint in the middle of their lips, leaving the rest bare.

KYE
The Face Shop expanded into Canada in 2013 and now has 35 stores that launch 60 new products a month. The pace of innovation is mind-boggling, so, while in Seoul, I make a science-geek pilgrimage to see the process in action at a lab in the city’s outskirts. Here, 700 researchers are tasked with figuring out how to concoct the latest and greatest—I would kill to attend their monthly brainstorms. I nosily ask what’s in the pipeline and get to touch a prototype of a super-thin bio-cell sheet mask made of fermented coconut, which clings to the skin so nourishing ingredients absorb better. A researcher wearing a Peter-Pan-collared dress under her lab coat demonstrates how an oil-in-water emulsion is made. I’m distracted by her gradient lip colour, subtle liner and dewy skin—even the scientists here are cool. By the end of my trip, I’m sheetmasking nightly and using an essence—a liquid hydrator that goes on right after cleansing—twice a day. I wear a moisturizing mask on the long flight home and arrive looking like I’ve just had a minifacial. Now, weeks later, my jet lag has faded but I’m still double cleansing religiously, layering on serum, gel-cream and tinted SPF and using a cushion compact for sheer, luminous coverage. I don’t sit down to watch Netflix without first masking up. I’ve never put this much emphasis on moisture; the error of my ways is now clear. My complexion is bright and calm and so soft. My routine takes a while, certainly, but the more time I spend on skincare, the less I spend on makeup, since I don’t need as much. The only real drawback is that a bottle or jar almost tumbles to its death every time I open my overstuffed bathroom cabinet. But unless I actually drown in a tidal wave of product, it seems a small price to pay. After all, I’m an international beauty junkie now.
TWICE is as manufactured as it gets, composed of nine winners of the 2015 reality show Sixteen.
LID SURGERY IS STILL A THING Double-eyelid surgery is still popular, and tourists come from across Asia to have it done, along with face shaping to reduce roundness. One building in Gangnam houses seven different clinics.
Supercharged antioxidant ginseng is a hero ingredient in Korea, used in everything from teas to candies. At ginseng company Cheongkwanjang’s tranquil spa, the all-ginseng body treatment starts with a foot soak as you sip ginseng tea, then moves to a bed for a blissful oil massage, hot tummy compresses and a facial and lymph node massage (including breasts; prudes beware). The last step: vigorous, almost gymnastic stretching. spag.co.kr

When a ballet dancer and her model fiancé plan a wedding, it’s sure to be a thing of beauty
BY RANI SHEEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAYLA ROCCA
Something is missing when ballet dancer Alexandra MacDonald, 27, bounds into the room between rehearsals for the National Ballet of Canada’s world premiere of Le Petit Prince (June 4 to 12, in Toronto). Usually the second soloist’s stretchy warm-up gear would be off set by her engagement

ring from her fiancé, model Wayne Andrade, 39, but it’s back with its designer for a “touch-up.” The marquise diamond ring had to travel to Hong Kong to receive finishing touches, where its Canadian designer, Honngai Jewelry, is based. Andrade found the ring on Etsy after catching MacDonald checking it out. “I casually had it on my ‘favourites’ page,” she says with a laugh. He copied the link to his computer and ordered the ring to be delivered to his best friend’s house.

There it stayed for the next eight months, until he found the right moment to propose. Last August, after a sangria-fuelled picnic and bocce session at the northern Ontario campground his grandparents used to frequent, Andrade got down on one knee. When MacDonald said yes (immediately, according to her; after a couple of heart-stopping moments, according to him), they celebrated with a “high 10” and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot by the lake. THE HANDBOOK CITIZENS OF SUMMER
Models Annesta Duodu and Britney Bentick met at a casting for a Toronto runway show a couple of years ago. Duodu says they bonded over vintage shopping; Bentick says it was food. Either way, the full-time students are now buds who share duds. Duodu describes her summer style as “edgy and masculine,” while Bentick says her look is “girly, androgynous.” Whatever you call it, it’s as hot as summer pavement.

Electropop duo Milk & Bone can’t get enough of Drake’s “One Dance.” “It has such a crazy cool party vibe. We just feel like dancing to it all night. Go, Drizzy, go!” We love: “Water Water” by Humans; “Miracle” by Darcys
Patio season = hangover season, so master the morning after Boasting Toronto’s first selfie room—although isn’t every room a selfie room these days?— Doomie’s (1263 Queen St. W.), the L.A.-based resto, offers vegan twists on burgers and diner classics. Caplansky’s Deli opened a Jewish delicatessenslash-eatery in Yorkville (156 Cumberland St.) in May, rapidly bringing down the ratio of small dogs to large sandwiches in the area.
EL DIABLO
At midnight on my 20th birthday, I watched lightning strike the CN Tower. It was one of those perfect moments. A boy held an umbrella over me while the warm rain fell, and that symbol of Toronto became the epicentre of one of those swollen, relentless, amazing summer storms—a literal lightning rod for all the energy and excitement of a heady summer night. Both the birthday and the boy are long gone, but summer in Toronto remains one of my favourite things in the world. I visit friends in London every spring, but I always make sure to be back by early July because I can’t bear the thought of missing the otherworldly nights that follow our blazing hot days, when the air is still and everything inside and outside of you feels like the exact same temperature. Every year it feels—magically, ridiculously—like summer might not happen, like we might be trapped in the cold grey of Canadian winter forever. Then the sun appears and brings us back to life like Bruce Springsteen pulling Courteney Cox on stage in the “Dancing in the Dark” video (minus the church basement dance moves). The population of Trinity Bellwoods explodes, thighs happen, the LCBO hurriedly moves all the rosé to the front of the store. That first really warm day feels like our own annual citywide holiday, a time when Toronto can let go of its occasional chip-on-the-shoulder persona and get unselfconsciously goofy-happy. A hot and sweaty Toronto is where I always want to be: I want to ride down an empty University Avenue in the wee hours of the morning on a second-hand bicycle, one shoe half full of blood, the breeze tousling my hair and cooling the sweat off my neck; I want to gather around a sky-high island bonfire and watch the light reflect off my friends’ faces and the black water, the air full of wood smoke and a panicked rush for the ferry in our future. I want to lie back on the south slope of Christie Pits Park, sun-blind, not quite touching the person beside me because it’s too hot, while the subway rumbles by below and makes the ground shiver beneath us. These moments aren’t just empty nostalgia— they’re the lifeblood of the city. They’re a chance to unapologetically buy in to the idea, every year, that this year will be great, that all that shit that happened in the winter can be burned away by a summer sun. I never saw lightning strike the CN Tower again, although apparently it happens a lot. But summer still casts a spell. The flush of heat wouldn’t have the same power if we didn’t have to slog through the slush and the cold. Summer is our makeup sex with the city, and well into September we sip Dark ’n Stormys on patios around town and swear we’ll never fight again. Because summer is where our stories are conceived, our favourite memories. It’s our chance, every year, to fall in love with Toronto all over again.

We Were Feminists Once by Andi Zeisler “It’s about the rebranding (and, in some senses, selling out) of feminism. I always love reading Zeisler because she’s got razor-sharp culture acumen. Currently on my bedside table is Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me. I’m a little late to it—it was released two years ago. It’s an elegant and highly informative analysis of contemporary gender politics.” —Soraya Roberts, author of In My Humble Opinion: My So-Called Life (out in August)
Look At Me by Jennifer Egan “This is a fascinating, articulate and shadowy novel. It was written before Facebook, but it’s about the discomfort of image, and the stories we tell about ourselves. The protagonist is a model who’s had an accident, and her face has completely changed after reconstructive surgery. Reading it in 2016, knowing what we know now about social media, gives me goosebumps.” —Sarah Selecky, author of This Cake Is for the Party
The Sun & the Moon & the Rolling Stones by Rich Cohen “It tells the history of the greatest rock ’n’ rollers going, from one of my favourite pop culture historians. Right now I’m reading Makers and Takers by Rana Foroohar. It’s a stunning indictment by a worldclass business writer of how high finance has led us to low living and huge economic problems.” —David Sax, author of The Tastemakers
The Summer before the War by Helen Simonson “One of the books I’m looking forward to reading this summer is Helen Simonson’s second novel; her first novel, Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, was so charming and clever. I’ve seen her speak twice and I’m taken with how witty she is, both in person and in her written word.” —Shilpi Somaya Gowda, author of The Golden Son and Secret Daughter

HOP A FENCE There was a bout of exhaustpipe-level heat one July, back when I was 23. I’ d just been swallowed whole by big-time heartbreak (the five-year, first love kind) and I was desperately trying to reclaim the youth I’d lost sight of. That’s how I found myself getting a boost from a couple of sweaty strangers, trying to scale a seemingly milehigh chain-link fence—a sharpedged hurdle between us and the cool reprieve of a city pool. The scene on the other side of the fence was like something from a Renaissance painting: a hundred revellers peeling off sticky clothes; some lying out on the still-warm deck as if the sun hadn’t set; others, entangled in the water’s refuge, seemingly unaware of the blazing spotlights that exposed their ever y embrace. My skin was dewy from the aftermath of a showy cannonball when I realized that the sullen look I’d been dragging around had been replaced with boozy, adulterated joy. That pool was an escape from the sweltering real world, a place where rules asked to be broken—until we heard the magic word that shook us out of our collective haze: “Cops!”
Extra, extra! Bike lanes are going in on Bloor Street! Anyone who has been doored while trying to get to Dior can appreciate that this is the biggest cycling news to hit the city since Rob Ford peddled his war on bikes. The next step? Setting in motion the city’s ambitious proposal to roughly double the city’s bike routes by adding about 525 km. #Whee

Every morning, Julia Stone and Tenemy Shaughnessy-De Rothschild look out at the city from their east side light box of an apartment and say, “Let’s do this, world!” The makeup-artist-slash-model and DJ-slash-stylist are “very goal oriented,” explains De Rothschild. That’s probably why you basically can’t go to an art party or influencer gettogether this summer without meeting the couple. In November, the two—who have been dating for five years—moved from Parkdale to the St. Lawrence Market area to give themselves “space to work and think about our careers,” says De Rothschild. “And the east side is full of young families, and that’s very aspirational for us,” adds Stone.

GET TO KNOW THE SOUND OF THE CITY
hot spots “The bike ride out to Leslie Street Spit is a nice one.” —Afie
There is no denying that the GTA is pop music’s epicentre right now. “But I think the Toronto sound has been pigeonholed as this sad R&B sound,” says singer allie (born Allison Ho-Sang). “I love that, but there’s a really eclectic group of artists creating different music.” In fact, the 29-year-old soul-meets- R&B ar tist, who has supported artists like SZA, is shaking up our city’s sonic landscape. After releasing the dreamy EP Moonlust last November—if Beyoncé’s battle cry is #slay, the message here is #sway—allie spent the winter bunkered in the home studios of Toronto musicians and producers like River Tiber and 2nd S o n , r e c o rd i n g a f u l l length album that’s more intense and aggressive. It’s due out this fall. “Being in a professional studio can feel a bit sterile,” says allie. “If you’re in somebody’s home, it’s more personal.” N ot to m e ntio n th at it means she can cook her signature jerk chicken. Her favourite summer feeling happens after the sun goes down. “It ’s so cold for most of the year, and it feels like such a novelty to be able to ride your bike wearing a tank top on a warm summer night,” she says. “It’s so simple.” The best things often are. —Veronica Saroli

“The best part of summer in the city is farmers markets like Dufferin Grove and Sorauren—and that everyone leaves the city on weekends.” —Naomi “We shop most often at VSP Consignment (1410 Dundas St. W.) and Value Village.” —Naomi “Spumoni is the best ice cream! Buy the two-litre tub from Sicilian Sidewalk Café (712 College St.).” —Afie
Anyone who has heard a few chords of the hypnotizing folk music of Bahamas—a.k.a. Afie Jurvanen—has insight into the born-cool vibe that permeates life with his wife, ceramic artist Naomi Yasui. Married in 2012, the couple used to live over Aunties & Uncles near College and Bathurst but traded in the noisy corner for a sweet semi on a quiet street in the Junction last year. Now they split a Guinness most evenings after their toddler, Yuri, is asleep—and their petite Scandi-cool backyard is their go-to ’hood patio. Jurvanen’s last album, Bahamas Is Afie, which

dropped in 2014, received critical praise for its grown-up sound. This summer, he’s stoked to bring Yuri on the festival circuit (look for her killer hat game on the bouncy castle at WayHome). Yasui, meanwhile, has just wrapped a show of her thought-provoking ceramics and is ready to start a new body of work. The couple share a similar artistic spirit. “I confer with her about everything,” says Jurvanen simply. Yasui agrees that their oeuvres inform each other—although not necessarily in a direct way. “Afie has taught me to
be more open and not care what people think,” she explains. “He has a goal and works toward it, and I’m just always turning things over in my mind.” Yasui does know how she’ll be spending the summer: “looking like someone’s mom from an ’80s movie,” she quips. “I’ll be seen with a zinc face and ball cap shrinking away from the sun.” Jurvanen riffs that Kanye is his summer style icon. (He’s gotten big into fishing and assures us that Kanye will “also be seen in his waders.”) But this couple’s style—and collective creative swagger—is no joke.

TEXT: KATHRYN HUDSON (CITIZENS, ROAD TRIP), JILLIAN VIEIRA (SHOES)
My first two trips to the Toronto Islands taught me two things: Polish people know how to throw a wedding. And life can go on—joyfully, even—after loss. I learned this on an ideal summer weekend during my boyfriend’s best friend’s wedding. We hopped a chartered ferry and arrived at a charming old schoolhouse on Algonquin Island. The decor was Pinterest-perf (bunting, obv), the weather was hot and breezy, and the vodka was flowing. We watched the couple exchange vows at the water’s edge, backlit by blinding sunlight. After the sun dipped, we danced and laughed and drank as the lights of the Big Smoke illuminated the lake. It was damn near perfect. The next day, we woke up hungover but

One bite of complex mutton biriyani at Dindigul Thalappakattu Biriyani (3850 Finch Ave. E.) will inspire you to pour some killer chai tea out for your homies. 3. happy, and, as you do after a wild night, we took inventory of our stuff. I had all my things (even my drunk self is annoyingly organized) but my dude was light on a few items—his tweed blazer, new iPhone and DSLR camera. We caught a water taxi back to the island, hoping to catch the newlyweds’ families cleaning up. The day was so gorgeous that I forgot to stay annoyed with my forgetful mate. We saw people in the distance (hooray!) but as we got closer, we realized they were strangers. It was a family who gather every year to remember a loved one in the exact spot where our friends had wed just 12 hours earlier. It was a casual gathering, just jeans and smiles and chit-chat in their loved one’s
favourite place. Instead of seeming melancholy, the group was full of joy. And we, two hungover unintentional memorial-crashers, were welcomed warmly into their celebration. So, while some cynics think the islands aren’t worth the effort, I’ll never forget the magic we felt there —the hope and excitement of a new beginning and the reminder of what can come after an ending. Sadness and grief are natural, healthy emotions, but carving out a spot in your life for loss and finding sweetness in a loved one’s memory can heal. We left, forgotten items in tow, feeling lucky to have been part of both celebrations. And as we floated back, I got embarrassingly weepy. I blamed it on the hangover.
You made it through the city’s ultimate tasting tour! Take an Uber home and get your BF to pick up your bike tomorrow.

In the city’s “dust bowl”—between and under highways and stadiums whose concrete walls steam and sizzle in the humidity—crowds stream past impatient traffic jams, street-meat stands and ticket hawkers. This dusty lavender and incense blend, softened with creamy tonka bean, adds elegance to that distinctly downtown smell.
A trip on the ferry starts with freshwater breezes and ends with the scent of damp sand, verdant dogwoods and willows—and envy of the people who were smart enough to buy those adorable houses. Channel that watery fragrance with this new take on an aquatic classic, which stars marine molecule “Maritima” plus fresh lily of the valley and dewy rose damascena.
