Alyson and Evan let the scenery lead the way when planning their wedding at a private residence on the edge of Maroon Bells. “With those views, we knew the day would be unforgettable,” Alyson says. “Our color palette accentuated the landscape.” The pair filled their day with rustic greens and berries, all in the name of nature. One extra touch: A bagpiper played the couple into the reception.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Before you jump into the planning, take some time to really enjoy and reflect on your engagement—because this is a huge moment. You’ve found your person. And on the journey to find them, there was likely a slew of circumstances and chance that helped you navigate the almost eight billion people in this world and bring you two together. In other words, this is big. Now take a deep breath because the hardest part is over! What’s up next? Celebrating your unique love story with all of your friends and family. If you’re not sure where to begin (trust me, I’ve been there!) then you’ve come to the right place. These pages are chock-full of tips, tricks and advice for everything from finding your perfect wedding venue to deciding on accessories to match your style. And make sure to check out our Real Wedding stories. They’re a great place to find amazing vendors in your area, as well as local-specific ideas for food, décor and more. After you’re finished reading, download The Knot Wedding Planner app to make sure your planning stays on track. You’ve got this!

STAR SEARCH I’m a big believer in astrology, so if you can’t make a decision on your venue, let your sign be your guide. For all of the Sags out there (it me!), let your wanderlust take the lead and look into an exotic locale like Hawaii (p. 85).

• • ••

AND THE WINNER IS... If you’d like to jump-start a skin care routine or try a new makeup product, look no further than our Beauty Awards (p. 119).

TOP IT OFF

Accessories are an easy place to add a pop of personality. Even if it’s just for the reception (p. 147).

TOO PRETTY TO EAT How stunning is this handpainted cake? While these flowers are expertly crafted from sugar, you can get a similar look (and maximize your budget) by opting for real stems (p. 77).

3

HIRE YOUR TEAM Research and book pros—anyone you have to have should be locked in ASAP.

GATHER YOUR CREW Ask your besties to stand by you at the altar and in the months leading up to your day.

4

5 REGISTER + CREATE A WEBSITE TheKnot.com is the easiest place to do both! Then share the link so guests are in on the details, like room blocks.

8

16

PLAN THE CEREMONY Meet with your officiant to discuss the details and attend prewedding counseling if required.

9

COMPLETE YOUR TEAM Book any outstanding pros like hairstylists, makeup artists, day-of transportation or a photo booth for your reception.

SHOP FOR RINGS Try on and purchase your wedding rings—then insure them. (Now it’s starting to feel really real, right?)

CHOOSE A POINT PERSON If you don’t have a wedding planner or day-of coordinator, task an attendant or family member to be the go-to so you can relax and enjoy the day.

DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR Shop for your attire and schedule necessary fittings—don’t forget accessories. Choose what your wedding party will wear too.

6

7

COTKRSS20_Sect_01_(001_016).indd 16

NAIL DOWN THE BUDGET Envision your wedding and decide how much you want to spend (and who else will be contributing).

BUY YOUR WEDDING PAPER Select invites, thankyous and other stationery. If you place one order, you may snag a discount.

FINALIZE OTHER PARTY DETAILS Plan your rehearsal dinner, after-party and morning-after brunch.

GO FOR FITTINGS Have the final attire fittings and arrange for dress and/or suit pickup.

Organizing all those details and a checklist? There’s an app for that. The Knot Wedding Planner pulls together your vision, pros and guests to put planning in the palm of your hand.

18

PHOTOGRAPH BY YUNHEE KIM

F I N D Y O U R W E D D I N G S T Y L E We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). K E E P O R G A N I Z E D Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. C O M P I L E Y O U R T E A M After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros (located right where you are), plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. M A N A G E Y O U R R E G I S T R Y Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Amazon. And if you’d rather ask for money to put toward things like your honeymoon flights or a home down payment, start a cash registry on The Knot. T H I N K O F Y O U R G U E S T S Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time).

PROP STYLING: JULIE FLYNN AT HALLEY RESOURCES

Plan Your Wedding on Your Phone

G E T Y O U R D A Y - O F T I M E L I N E As you check off to-dos (so satisfying, right?) the app creates a detailed day-of timeline. Share it with your pros, wedding party and VIPs. This way, everyone knows when it’s all going down, and you can focus on enjoying some champagne and having a blast with your people.

CREATE YOUR VISION All that swiping will leave you with tons of inspo, which you can add to anytime. Plus there’s room for personalized, #MakeTradition musthaves (think: late-night taco truck, dog-friendly ceremony space or room for a sangeet).

SHARE YOUR IDEAS When you’re ready, send your vision board to your fam and the people bringing your day to life. A series of images will help convey your idea of what a “romantic garden party” looks like.

20

DISCOVER YOUR STYLE No couple is just one set style—instead, you’ll get a series of words that describe your vibe. Bonus: You can use this lingo when talking with your pros.

PERFECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE Check out the colors that match your wedding style. And not to worry—you can always change them up as you plan.

GET PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS We’ll take your quiz answers and match you with vendors based on your location, style and budget—starting with your venue.

SAY “I DO” WITH EASE As you check off your to-dos, we’ll create a custom day-of timeline to help you pull off the main event.

M A R Y C H A T M A N : A simple note on your wedding website and a small, concise sign advising guests that you’re having an unplugged wedding should suffice. Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry— this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

I’ve heard that, as the bride, I should get my hair and makeup done last so it’s the freshest. Is this true?

My partner’s father passed away and we’re hoping to find a few thoughtful (but not too heavy) ways to remember him on our day. Any suggestions?

B R I T T A N Y L O : Not necessarily. I actually always pick my bride as the first client for a few reasons. First, if you need your hair blown out and set for your hairstyle, then you want to be able to let it sit for the longest amount of time so it holds throughout the night. Additionally, the beginning of the day tends to be the most relaxing—it can get pretty chaotic as the morning goes on. From an emotional standpoint, you might be a bit calmer if you’re taken care of first rather than stressing that there may not be enough time for you to get ready. Plus, you’ll be able to chill before getting dressed and make sure you love your look before pictures begin.

A L Y S S A L O N G O B U C C O : Your wedding day is a celebration of you and your partner’s love, so it should be a celebration of the people you love too. Even if they’re no longer with you, their memory can be honored in incredibly special and meaningful ways. Think of how your partner’s father would have liked to commemorate you two had he been able to be there, and work that into the day. Did he always hit the dance floor when Earth, Wind & Fire came on? Play something by the band as the last song of the night. Was he a big fan of family pingpong tournaments? Set up a few tables for a showdown during cocktail hour in his honor. Giving a nod to a deceased loved one’s essence—and personality—is the greatest tribute of all. ››

ADVICE

Make a grand entrance with mom by escorting her down the aisle.

PLANNING

B R I T T N Y D R Y E : If space allows, having two aisles is a great way to showcase both parties equally with a dramatic meeting at the altar. If you go this route, make sure you have a photographer and a second shooter to capture both of your entrances and reactions. Another popular option is walking down the aisle together to symbolize unity. If you’re torn between the traditional and creating your own twist, why not combine the two? One of you can walk halfway down the aisle solo, where you can then meet in the middle and take your final steps to the altar together.

MAKE TRADITION

In the spirit of #MakeTradition, how can couples personalize their wedding day looks? B E C K Y M U R R A Y : Start with your favorite item. What’s your go-to accessory or signature addition when you dress for everyday life? If you feel your best in a bold lipstick, don’t feel the need to go nude and natural on your wedding day. If you’re known for rocking quirky socks in your nine-to-five, pick a new pair just for the occasion. Personalization is just that: personal. Wear what makes you feel the most “you” on your wedding day, not what you think you’re “supposed” to wear. #MakeTradition is all about being confident in the customs you inherited while staying true to what makes you unique.

FASHION

How much should my venue inform the style of my dress? M A R K I N G R A M : Aside from your own personal style, nothing influences your wedding fashion more than your venue. Obviously, an outdoor daytime garden wedding and a formal evening ballroom affair require very different looks. A clean and modern warehouse pairs well with a sleek sheath dress, while a detailed ball gown is perfect for a fairy-tale château. Let the venue be your guide and find a gown that will complement the setting.

FA S H I O N Today’s dress code is “you do you.” When it comes time to celebrate, your wedding day look is one of the most striking ways to make a statement about both your personal style and your cultures. These couples ran wild with accessories, colors and prints—and there’s no reason you can’t too.

“It was important to us to acknowledge our respective cultures,” John (right) says. “While researching Indian culture, I was gobsmacked by the beauty of traditional menswear. I was excited to wear the sherwani.”

TAILOR MADE “When it comes to my everyday style, I tend to lean masculine,” Jen says. “That said, I didn’t want a traditional black suit or tie for my wedding day. Purple struck me as feminine but different, and the flower necklace was the cherry on top. It totally stole the show.”

WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO COUPLES MAKE WHEN WORKING WITH FLORAL DESIGNERS? Clients often get lost in an endless array of inspiration photos. Above all, it’s my job to listen to clients and customize their weddings to their needs, but I also like to ground them by asking them what exactly “timeless” means to them. Their answer gives me insight into what makes them unique and how their flowers can feel authentic, but it doesn’t hinder their sense of creativity.

HOW CAN COUPLES WORK WITH THEIR DESIGNER TO PERSONALIZE THEIR FLOWERS? The best way to personalize your flowers is to tell us your story. For example, we recently had a client who grew up with a backyard full of pussy willows. The bride actually sent us a box of branches from her childhood home to design with for her wedding.

HOW MUCH CAN COLORADO COUPLES EXPECT TO SPEND ON FLOWERS? Colorado is unique. Our state has a thriving local wedding scene, as well as plenty of highly sought-after destination venues. A smaller venue can be decorated beautifully with a $5,000 to $10,000 budget. Remember: A mountain destination or larger venue will probably require a budget of $20,000 or more to create the desired effect. My rule of thumb: Plan to put anywhere from 10 percent to 20 percent of your total wedding budget into the floral design. If you’re working with a tight budget, we do our best to help clients by selecting affordable seasonal or local flowers.

WHICH FLOWERS ARE NATIVE TO COLORADO, AND WHEN ARE THEY AVAILABLE? Colorado has an incredible farming community that we utilize for at least half of our product. We get peonies and roses in the summer, lisianthus and dahlias in the fall and all of our favorite garden accents throughout the growing season. Our wildflowers tend to be very delicate and are best appreciated from a hiking trail. That said, we do source foliage, grasses, tumbleweeds, berries and wild thistle yearround. My top piece of advice is to embrace the landscape.

OUR PRO Stephanie Clark, owner and lead designer of Denver’s own Lalé Florals

It’s the most important step in our timeline and usually happens around a year before the wedding date. This meeting is when floral designers are able to listen to couples’ priorities and hear more about their desired aesthetics. I like to start with a coffee date so we can all get to know each other. I ask them questions about how they decorate their home or their personal style. From there, we go through images together and I listen to their feedback. Often, we’re having fun, sketching out concepts and casually throwing out ideas. We might not use everything, but these brainstorming sessions are key sources of inspiration.

THEIR STORY Mary Boontung (32 and a nurse) and Yani Delima’s (32 and a US Army Blackhawk pilot) wedding was an opportunity to honor their identies. “I am Thai-Italian, and Yani is Portugese, Greek and Hawaiian,” Mary says. “We blended our cultures with rustic and boho touches.” The pair played up Colorado’s natural beauty with outdoor vows, but brought the West Coast vibes with a Cali-inspired pampas grass altar to honor Mary’s home state. THEIR STORY High school sweethearts Diane Nguyen (30 and a people ops executive and personal trainer) and JJ Collazo (31 and the owner of a telecom company) have their very own way of doing things. After Diane proposed to JJ on New Year’s Eve, the couple planned a party-ready city wedding inspired by urban street art and filled with highly saturated color. “JJ describes the décor as ’90s prom and ’80s roller disco,” Diane says. The couple broke with tradition at many points, starting with the first look. “We were supposed to turn around at the same time, but I just booty-bumped him instead,” Diane says. — LB

BOUQUET Diane carried a soft mix of pastel dahlias, roses and white anthurium. “No crazy colors here,” she says.

56

BACKDROP Inspired by a fashion ad she’d seen in London, Diane worked with her planner to design a colorful iridescent wall covered in pink-stained roses and a chain-link pattern. COOL KIDS Diane’s niece and nephew took on starring roles at the ceremony, acting as the ring baby and boy-of-honor, respectively. TABLESCAPES Diane and JJ kept things minimal at their reception, topping tables with bud vases, Instax portraits and paper runners reading “love birds.”

ESCORT CARDS Guests found their seats by grabbing packs of candy cigarettes. “The candy reminded us of our childhoods,” Diane says. “It kept things lighthearted. Weddings can be too serious.” CAKE Diane’s loved ones took on decorating the cake, which they spent the night before the reception redoing after a mishap. “The cake barely made it out alive,” Diane says. SMOOTH MOVES Students from the local School of Breaking hit the floor in place of the couple’s first dance.

THEIR STORY Washington, DC, residents Puja Bhatia (33 and a lawyer) and Kunal Patel (33 and a consultant) changed up Indian tradition for their destination wedding celebration. “We were going for culturally inspired bohemian style,” Puja says. “I was inspired by the colors around us in the Colorado mountains as well as the jewel tones of Indian culture.” The pair punched up the neutral wood and greenery of their décor with vibrant red and gold paper, eye-catching anemones and sparkling traditional attire. “We chose parts of the Hindu ceremony that spoke to us,” Puja says. “In American fashion, our vows made us laugh and cry.” — LB

MANDAP Puja and Kunal departed from the traditional design of a colorful covered mandap in favor of an open, airy stage tucked into a sea of branches and greenery. “I wanted an earthy feel, as though we were standing in a field of Aspen trees,” Puja says. “It was just the right amount of Hindu tradition mixed with mountain style.” LOVED ONES The couple opted out of a wedding party, instead asking their friends and family to each play different roles in the day, from emcee and choreographer to ring bearer and flower girls.

THEIR STORY It only made sense for Maddie Danielson (24 and a freelance designer and commission artist) to rely on her sense of creativity when marrying John Thomas (25 and works in sales at Slack). “For our theme, I wanted everything to be eclectic and artsy in a way no guests had seen before,” Maddie says. “I wanted it to be textural and our color palette to be moody.” At the ceremony, the couple draped a dark, canvas-style backdrop, which Maddie painted, over the St Vrain’s exposed brick and minimal bushels of greenery hung from the chairs. Maddie hand-wrote each escort card to contain a personal message for every guest. — LB

MENUS Maddie designed the sketch of two birds to finish each of the menus: a flamingo represented John’s home state of Florida and a robin served as a nod to her Colorado roots. CENTERPIECES Red and burnt-orange roses brightened up the muted mixes of greenery, baby’s breath and white peonies atop tables. WEDDING PARTY John’s groomsmen rocked dapper black suits while Maddie’s bridesmaids paired their mismatched dresses with single, white king protea.

THEIR STORY David Vorwaller (33 and a retail store manager) and Nick Newell (30 and a senior recruiter) started their wedding day with a bang: happy hour. “We had a Friday evening wedding, so we figured our guests could use some drinks and food,” David says. The couple took a similarly relaxed approach to the rest of the day’s events, skipping a first dance, opting out of a wedding party and bringing their vision of a “messy workshop” vibe to life. Just as they were the first to greet their guests, the newlyweds were the last to leave—because they chose to forgo their planned sparkler exit. — LB

DÉCOR David and Nick went minimal with their reception, playing up Blanc’s whitewashed brick and leaving the farm tables uncovered. “We wanted it to feel as though you were in a greenhouse,” David says. Rope installations added an artsy vibe to the industrial space. CENTERPIECES “We ditched flowers altogether,” David says. Instead, they used greenery and raw, frayed rope on the tables. THEIR STORY Susan Scow (25 and a manager at Athleta) and Cameron Amirfathi (25 and a data analyst) have turned DIY into a hallmark of their relationship. After blacksmithing their wedding rings together, the pair made things official with a wedding on Flagstaff Mountain. “Our theme was outdoor escapism,” Susan says. FIRST, LAND ON THE RIGHT NUMBER FOR YOU

PRIORITIZE YOUR TOP MUST-HAVES

Before you write a single check, figure out how much you can afford to spend. That’s where we come in—with The Knot Wedding Planner app, we’ll help you settle on the right number for your celebration and offer suggestions for how much of that budget you should put toward each part of your wedding, from catering to cake. Plus, we’ll help you turn money to action with

When it comes to wedding planning, there’s no shame in playing favorites. Before you do too much research, sit down with your partner and make a list of each of your celebration priorities. The goal? Decipher where your money is best spent and what will really set the day apart for you. Remember, there are no wrong answers here—and it’s okay not to agree on everything! ››

This is all about compromising and figuring out what’s going to make you and your partner the happiest. Once you have your list, move forward with booking those vendors first and spending your money accordingly.

selection, opt for a high-impact item, like a wow-worthy charger plate or patterned tablecloth. Anything else will likely go unnoticed by your guests and isn’t worth the up-charge.

GO FOR GREENERY It may sound harsh, but the best way to save money is to slim down your guest list. Each person you invite adds to your budget—you’re likely shelling out at least $100 per person between catering and entertainment—so compile your invites thoughtfully. Consider giving a plus-one only to couples that are engaged, married or living together. Then, if you still need to size down, put a few hard-and-fast rules in place, like “no coworkers.” The tighter you keep your count, the more money you’ll have to put toward other details, like a string quartet for the ceremony.

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER This may seem counterintuitive, but hear us out. Spending up front on a knowledgeable wedding planner can pay off big time for your budget and your sanity. A skilled pro will help you navigate everything from vendor selections to contract negotiations, ensuring you’re spending smart throughout the process. Another bonus? They’ll have a handle on venues and services in your area, so they can help you score insider-only deals and achieve coveted looks for way less.

Good news—this piece of advice is totally on trend. Big blooms often up the price per arrangement, so stretch your floral budget by opting for a greenery-heavy look instead. Utilize a textural mix of greenery for larger moments at your wedding, like a hanging installation. Then, concentrate your flower usage to areas that will be center stage in photos, like your bridal bouquet.

OPT FOR A ROAMING DINNER If you’re hoping to save on catering, and a bare-bones buffet isn’t really your style, look no further than the roaming dinner. Basically an all-night cocktail hour, an up-and-at-’em dinner consisting of passed bites and serve-yourself stations is a fresh (and frugal) take on the traditional reception meal. You’ll save some money since there’s less waitstaff needed, and guests will get to mingle all night instead sitting down for a formal meal. Just make sure the variety (and amount) of food guests would expect of a traditional dinner is still there, with lots of options.

PLAY UP YOUR VENUE DÉCOR Choosing a party spot with good bones is a priority when looking to make the most of your money. Getting a great deal on a ballroom won’t matter if you have to then spend big to cover up ’80s wallpaper and flooring you hate. You want to make sure your chosen venue feels 85 percent of the way “there” without having to add anything extra. When touring potential locations, pay attention to things you can’t tweak easily (or without spending a fortune), like good lighting, an open space, inoffensive wall coverings and decent flooring. From that “blank” slate, you can then work with your vendors to come up with décor accents that fit the space’s characteristics (and your budget), instead of working hard to disguise them.

SKIP THE RENTALS Trust us, no one is going to remember whether you chose silver or gold flatware on your wedding day. When it comes to rentals, it’s best to work with what your venue has to offer. While it may be necessary to rent some items, when it comes to purely stylistic choices, avoid upgrading unnecessarily if your budget doesn’t have the wiggle room. If you must elevate your venue’s basic dinnerware

Stick with the tabletop items your venue has on hand to save big on rentals.

STYLE + PLANNING

It’s important that the photographer and the couple are on the same page about what they value in wedding pictures.

The photography industry can be complicated to navigate as a newly engaged couple, and hiring your wedding day photographer is arguably one of the biggest decisions you make throughout your entire planning journey. After all, this will be the person or team responsible for capturing all those emotional, tangible moments (not to mention all the beautiful details you’ve spent months planning) that will allow you to relive your day 10 or 20 years from now. Don’t stress—we’re here to help you out. We’ve rounded up our best advice to guide you in narrowing down your style and finding a true-to-you photography pro perfect for capturing every second of your unique celebration.

and contrast-y editorials of a favorite fashion blogger, then maybe you’ll want to seek out a photographer with a flair for the exaggerated and dramatic. By pairing your aesthetic choices (hint: you figured these out in step one) with the “vibe” you desire, you’ll end up with a photography blueprint that you can then easily articulate to potential pros to help explain your goals when it comes to your wedding pictures.

The first step to finding your dream photographer is a fun one (seriously!)—just go get inspired. Spend some time poring over any and every kind of imagery you love, such as sunny home décor shots, a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed or moody avantgarde French movie posters. Save each image that draws your eye as you go—then, once you have a good collection of inspiring photographs, take a step back and try to narrow in on what draws you to them specifically. Is it the soft pastel color palette? The offthe-cuff happy grins of the people in the picture? The interesting angles and perspectives? The more you familiarize yourself with what details you like, the easier it will be for you to eventually identify that same quality in a potential photographer’s portfolio.

DECIDE ON A “FEELING” Once you and your partner have figured out what inspires you image-wise, dig deeper and dissect what feels most authentic to your relationship and celebration, and how you envision your eventual wedding album looking. If you’re a timeless couple that has your heart set on formal, Vanity Fair-like family portraits, you may gravitate toward a more classic photography style. If a lot of your inspiration ended up being fly-on-the-wall images that bottle an authentic moment in time, then lifestyle photography may be the right choice for you. If you fell in love with the sharp

COTKRSS20_Sect_07_(099_116).indd 106

DO YOUR RESEARCH Now’s the time to hit the web and find the pro who will bring your day to life. Browse The Knot Marketplace for photographers (and other vendors) in your area and price range, then peruse their portfolios and social media channels to identify if they’d be a good fit for your day. As you browse, ask yourself questions that are good indicators for a successful “match.” How do they capture the moments that are important to you? Have they shot in a venue similar to yours (bonus points if they’ve worked at your venue before)? Do they seem friendly and personable with their online audience? If available, check out reviews from past couples as well. Then, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit of info about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event (don’t forget to include your date!) and the vision for your day—you can even attach a few inspiration images you love from their portfolio, if you’d like. Once you’ve chatted about specifics (like whether their cal is even free to shoot your wedding), schedule some time to talk with them either on the phone or via video chat before signing on the dotted line so you can get to know each other on a personal and professional level. Why? You’ll be spending the most time with them on your wedding day, and you want to feel comfortable as they capture some of your and your family’s most emotional moments. ››

Ask about any additional fees that could add up too, like having to pay for your photographer’s travel and lodging. Finally, settle on an image delivery date and make sure it’s reflected in your contract so you know exactly when you can expect your shots.

PREP FOR THE DAY OF

108

FINESSE THE CONTRACT To get the most out of your photography investment, you’re going to want to make note of several important points when choosing your package and reviewing your contract. Most photographers offer a variety of services to suit their couples’ individual needs. This can include everything from day-of edits and digital proofs to adding a second shooter, scoring tangible prints and ordering a gorgeously assembled album. With all those options for customization, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel unsure about what you actually want or need. When you’re ready to make things official, present your chosen photographer with your budget and rough day-of timeline and get their opinion on the best package for you. The amount of time they spend at an event or the number of shots they provide you with may be flexible, so see if you can find a middle ground that works for both of you. Now is also the time to inquire about the cost of any add-ons you’re

Instead of putting together a detailed shot list for your photographer, pass along your final day-of timeline a few weeks ahead of your wedding and give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a picture with each bridesmaid or detail shots of the heirloom jewelry you’ll be wearing). Then, let them do their thing! As long as you’ve provided a schedule that you’ll (mostly) stick to, they’ll be able to budget for time spent on your details, dance floor and everything in between on their own accord. Ahead of the wedding is also the time to give them a heads-up on any familial or friendship intricacies they should be aware of, like divorced parents who may want separate family portraits, a grandmother that needs to remain seated for shots, or a groomsman and bridesmaid that don’t get along (hey, it happens). If you’re hoping to get your wedding published online or in a magazine, relay that to your photographer as well. This way, they’ll know to put a little extra emphasis on snapping shots of all your amazing details and will likely come armed with gorgeous styling accessories, like ribbons, linens and more—all with the goal of helping your wedding day aesthetic truly stand out.

BE RELAXED AND READY Guys, take a big deep breath with us now. You’ve put a lot of work into finding and working with the right photographer up until this point, so—like with all your pros—it’s time to put your total faith in them. In the week leading up to your wedding, reach out to re-confirm all the important details (like your venue location, day-of timeline and any surprises you’ve planned for your guests or partner) and answer any lingering questions they may have, then chill out. The only thing that’s left for you and your partner to do now is enjoy yourselves and go get hitched— your pros will happily take care of the rest.

THE BASICS Start off by doing some research. In our (ahem) unbiased opinion, TheKnot.com is a great place to start— you can search thousands of dresses by color, fabric and style and find stores in your area that carry your faves. If you’re flipping through magazines or browsing Pinterest or Instagram, tear out pages and save or pin images to help zero in on what you like.

132

BEGIN BY BROWSING

ORDER THE DRES SES AT THE SAME TIME SO THEY COME FROM THE SAME DYE L O T. T H E N , S E N D AN EMAIL TO YOUR GIRLS DETAILING THE TIMELINE AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. FOLLOW UP WITH THEM ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE THE DRESSES ARE DUE TO ARRIVE.

KEEP COSTS IN MIND If any of your friends have been in a wedding party before, they’ll know that bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. But a gentle reminder is never a bad idea. When it comes to price, try to be considerate of your friends’ lifestyles. If you’re concerned your wedding and the events surrounding it might be a financial burden for one or more of your bridesmaids, focus your search on more affordable dresses or select a color you like and let them pick their own style and price point.

To ensure your bridesmaid dresses match your style, order your gown before making any decisions about them. Keep in mind: It takes two to three months for custom orders to arrive and an additional four to six weeks for alterations. A six-month cushion will give you and your friends ample time to find, order and tailor the dresses.

STICK TO A SCHEDULE

FIND THE RIGHT FIT A bridesmaid dress is typically ordered using a person’s biggest measurements, so your friends will likely buy dresses at least a size or two larger than they normally wear. If a friend wants to buy a size smaller, let her know it’s easier to alter a bigger dress. In the same vein, don’t choose dresses from brands that don’t carry plus if your bridesmaids are not all straight size (0 to 14). ››

COTKRSS20_Sect_09_(131_150).indd 132

REA L TA LK

Your bridal party vision doesn’t have to be super rigid. For example, your bridesmaids don’t need to all wear the exact same dress for your wedding photos to turn out awesome. Your day is about celebrating and spending time with the people you love, so don’t get hung up on little details like forcing your friends to look matchy-matchy if it’s just not working for everyone.

FROM TOP: CARE STUDIOS; CHRISTINA KARST PHOTOGRAPHY

SHOP ACCORDINGLY Consider what kind of shopping experience will suit your personality best. If you tend to have strong opinions, it’s probably better to shop alone (or with just one friend or family member). If you prefer more input, take the whole gang and give them guidelines, like color or fabric. Then have them try on options and make a group decision.

COTKRSS20_Sect_09_(131_150).indd 134

A GUIDE TO COLOR

PICKING THE RIGHT PALETTE

There are several foolproof ways to pick the perfect color. One of the easiest methods is to play off of the color schemes of the venue and the season. For instance, if your wedding will be held at a rustic vineyard with burgundy décor in the middle of winter, you’ll probably want to rule out sunshineyellow dresses. Rich colors like emerald, eggplant and crimson work well in the fall and winter months, while lighter shades like sage green, lavender and blush are perfect for spring and summer. If you’re still at a loss for exactly which hue to choose, go for a general color (like blue) or color family (think: jewel tones) and let your bridesmaids pick their favorite shades from light to dark for a mismatched effect. Another thought: Toss tradition altogether and opt for chic, all-white dresses and jumpsuits in a variety of fabrics and styles.

Once you’ve chosen a dress shade you love, it’s time to figure out which accent colors work with it. Here’s what to pair with the hues of the moment:

SELECTING A SHADE

If your attendants have a diverse range of skin tones, think about choosing a universally flattering color. More muted colors like blush, gunmetal gray and dusty blue work on pretty much everyone and are also right on trend. Want an edgier feel? It’s hard to go wrong with pretty metallics like rose gold and champagne.

FINDING COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

To push the envelope even further, consider prints—floral-print bridesmaid dresses are hot right now. Just remember patterns work best in smaller parties and should be paired with simple accessories like monochromatic shoes and minimal jewelry. If you have a larger party of six or more, consider having your maid of honor wear a printed dress while your other attendants wear solid colors—it’s a fun way to give your MOH a shout-out while still maintaining a cohesive-looking group.

CHOOSING A PRINT

There’s a reason this light pink shade has staying power: It goes with a wide range of accent colors and is romantic without being frilly. Metallics like copper, rose gold and yellow gold pop against this stonewashed shade. For a softer palette, mix it with pastels like mint or natural tones like taupe.

BLUSH

A combination of mauve and pink, lilac has rustic associations. To play up its floral roots, pair lilac with lush shades of green (try sage, olive or hunter). Or go full-on Manic Pixie and opt for analogous colors like purple and pink.

LILAC

RUBY This is what we call a power color. A rich shade of red, ruby can feel either earthy or regal, depending on how you work with it. For an instantly royal effect, consider an opulent accent color like gold. If you’re going for a more understated look, blush and beige create a pretty contrast.

One of the most versatile colors, this deep shade of blue jives with almost every wedding style and venue. Add red or hot-pink accents for a preppy feel, coral or lemon yellow for a more tropical vibe or lighter blues for a dreamy tone-on-tone palette.

NAVY

This color is pure sophistication. For formal nuptials, mix in glittery metallics like silver or pewter. For a more casual affair, try cooler blues or navy. The subtlety of gray also makes it ideal for experimenting with different textures like pleated chiffon, velvet or beaded embellishments. ››

ACCESSORY ADVICE Before you get into the fun stuff (hello, sparkly jewelry and shoes!), remind your girls to get the right undergarments. Depending on the type of dress (strapless, low back or one shoulder), your bridesmaids may need some special support. Trust us: The wrong bra can make even the fanciest dress look unflattering. Where more specific shapewear is concerned, let your friends call the shots. If they opt to wear a body shaper, that’s great. If they feel more comfortable without one, that’s also great.

It’s up to you whether you want head-to-toe wardrobe control, but we should warn you: By demanding that your friends wear certain footwear, you’re officially entering bridezilla territory. That said, there are occasions where the right shoes can make the outfit. A black cocktail dress paired with pink stilettos feels more flirty than classic. The same dress paired with jeweled sandals serves up black-tie glamour. If you want to win points with your bridesmaids, have them sport a style they already own. The next best thing? Pick a color and heel height and let them choose the style they feel most comfortable wearing. Lastly, before you send them shopping, specify if the wedding will be indoors. Stilettos make an outdoor photo session nearly impossible.

SIZING UP HER SHOES

If you’re buying your friends jewelry as a gift, give them a hint so they won’t splurge on any new pieces. Have a look in mind but want them to use their own jewels? Set guidelines by size and color. Small and subtle is a foolproof combo for jewelry, like studs and a pendant necklace. And let their dress color determine the metal: gold jewelry for warm tones, silver for cool shades, and diamonds and pearls for everything in between.

THE SHUTTER CHEF

Take a tour of our new beautiful venue in Buena Vista, Colorado! It’s called The Loft Theater and seats 300!

Wedding reception at The Loft Music Venue in Colorado Springs. Seats up to 140.

One of the things our couples LOVE MOST about our venue is that we are an OPEN venue.

THE SHUTTER CHEF

That means you may bring your own caterer and alcohol or even your own food! You may choose your own vendors and will never be forced to use the people that we recommend. (Although they are awesome!) Freedom of choice...that’s what The Loft is all about. We open the venue at 10 a.m. for your special day so that you may use our newly renovated bridal suite (it’s pretty sweet), which may be used as your own private getaway. Our packages were designed to take the stress and pressure off of you. Our staff is very friendly, fun and professional. They might even bust out some fun dance moves once your reception gets really rolling. We throw one mean party and if you like great sound and an awesome dance floor, there is no better place in Colorado Springs than The Loft Music Venue and Events Center. 2506 W. t’s no secret tuxedo rentals have a bad rap for being ill fitting and outdated. Factor in the

multiple trips to a rental shop to buy and later tailor your look (not an easy feat when you have an entire party to outfit), and the whole process can seem even more daunting. So what’s the good news? Brands like The Black Tux, Generation Tux, Men’s Wearhouse and Stitch & Tie are reinventing the rental game. With little more than a measuring tape, internet connection and spare half hour, you can pick out a tux or suit (plus shoes and accessories, if you’re so inclined) and have it all shipped directly to your doorstep. Below, our rundown of the new way to rent formalwear.

THE BLACK TUX With the largest collection of the bunch, The Black Tux boasts 48 suit and tuxedo rentals guaranteed to fit any and every wedding style with options in tried-and-true neutral shades, plus more fashionforward colors and prints. THE FIT Most styles come in a range of sizes, for a made-to-order look. If you don’t know your size, use their Fit Formula to help find what’s best for you based on answers to a few questions like your height and weight. You can also visit any one of their 29 showrooms across the country to be measured in person. Your outfit will ship two weeks prior to your wedding to give you enough time to make alterations (should they be necessary). But plan ahead and secure your rentals at least three months in advance. The Black Tux will cover minor alterations to the length of jacket sleeves or pants—without cutting the fabric—up to $15 with a receipt. If the thought of renting a tux or suit without first seeing it in person makes you nervous, take advantage of The Black Tux’s free, at-home try-on. You’ll get to test drive one of its rentals for up to 48 hours before you commit.

The multistep rental process takes about 25 minutes to complete. First, choose your tux or suit and a name for it (like groom). If you’re looking to differentiate your best man’s outfit from the rest of your groomsmen, this will help keep you organized. Next, build your look with a shirt and accessories. Then add all your event details and your measurements. If you don’t know your size, use their guide. Shipping is free, unless you’re placing an order within two weeks of your event date, in which case it can cost up to $40. Once the party is over, you have three days to return the rental with prepaid postage.

THE PROCESS

If you feel like making a fashion statement at your wedding, The Black Tux offers plenty of unexpected suiting options like mixed tartan prints, gingham, oversize pinstripes and bold jackets in fun colors like plum, rose and emerald. PRICE From $110, TheBlackTux.com STANDOUT SERVICE

GENERATION TUX While Generation Tux has a smaller lineup of formalwear styles, with a selection of 21 suits and tuxedos in classic shades like blue, gray and black, its extensive collection of accessories more than makes up the difference. ››

You can choose from an assortment of neckwear, socks, cuff links, pocket squares, suspenders, belts, tie bars and even satin flower lapel pins in a range of colors and prints—you know, the trendy add-ons that will guarantee you and your guys look extra dapper. THE FIT Without a brick-and-mortar store, Generation Tux relies on its eTailor to determine your perfect fit with a few questions about your body profile, including height, weight and jean size. Order your rental three months prior to your wedding date and you’ll have plenty of time to flag any fit issues. Generation Tux will cover minor alterations up to $20, and if your suit requires more extensive fixes, they will send you a free replacement. THE PROCESS First order of business is creating an event on the website. Once that’s done, enter your measurements using the instructional videos. During this step, you can also set up a free at-home try-on if you want to touch and

feel the suit you’re planning to order in person. Then you’ll pick out your tux or suit, add accessories and check out. The whole process takes under 30 minutes. Once you secure your own rental, you can then invite your groomsmen to get started on their orders. Generation Tux’s management system allows you, your partner or even your wedding planner to view the status of each groomsman. (So, if one of your friends is seriously slacking and hasn’t been measured yet, you can follow up before it becomes a full-blown crisis.) And with friendly automated reminders of rental deadlines, all of the stress of managing (read: nagging) your wedding party is out of your hands. Another plus: When five or more of your groomsmen rent tuxedos through Generation Tux, your outfit is free. Your rental will arrive 14 days prior to your wedding. Once you receive your rental, you have 48 hours to flag any issues. After your event, return your rentals within three days with prepaid postage.

In addition to killer accessories, Generation Tux offers a selection of suits and tuxes in boy sizes— so even the most pint-size members of your party will look polished in photos. PRICE From $69, GenerationTux.com STANDOUT SERVICE

MEN’S WEARHOUSE Men’s Wearhouse is the go-to for off-the-rack designer suits for every style, but it also slays at rentals. There are 25 options to choose from, including looks for junior groomsmen and ring bearers. The selection is more traditional, with two- and three-piece suit and tux rentals in black, gray, blue and tan, plus a variety of accessories. THE FIT Men’s Wearhouse offers a range of sizes, lengths and styles in classic, modern and slim fits, depending on the suit or tux you choose. If you’re unsure of your size, you can use the site’s builtin Fit Evaluator or visit one of their nationwide locations to be measured by an in-store consultant. ›› THE SELECTION

Your rental will arrive two to three days before your event, but you should place your order at least 15 days in advance (if you’re cutting it super close). Start by selecting a prestyled outfit, or build your own look by choosing a suit or tux and adding accessories. Then, specify the type of event you’re renting for and the date before entering your measurements and checking out. Similar to Generation Tux and The Black Tux, Men’s Wearhouse offers an online group management tool to help you keep tabs on your wedding party. And, if six or more of your groomsmen rent suit or tuxedo packages, you can earn a free JOE Custom suit, a free rental or a $400 shopping spree. After your event, you only have one day to return your rental, but you can return it to any Men’s Wearhouse location. STANDOUT SERVICE Men’s Wearhouse hits the mark with their size-inclusive range of rentals, with jackets available in up to sizes 70 long and pants that go up to a 70-inch waist. PRICE From $100, MensWearhouse.com THE PROCESS

STITCH & TIE Stitch & Tie has a collection of 27 suits and tuxedos in traditional shades, as well as a couple of bolder options like red and teal. Unlike other sites, they also have a classic black tuxedo rental specifically tailored for women too. THE FIT Stitch & Tie offers a range of sizes in slim and modern cuts. To ensure an accurate fit, you’ll have to enter your specific measurements. If you’re not sure how to take your measurements, watch the instructional videos that make measuring yourself virtually foolproof. If your rental arrives and the fit is off, they’ll send you a replacement if you contact them within 48 hours or reimburse you up to $15 for minor alterations. For added peace of mind,

try the at-home trial service and borrow a suit or tux for 48 hours for $40, which is later applied to your final costs if you decide to take the plunge. THE PROCESS To avoid rush-shipping charges, start shopping for your rental at least 21 days before your event. After creating your account, build your custom look or choose from a selection of curated outfits, then enter your event date and your sizes before checking out. Their group management tool can save different looks for each groomsman and even send out friendly reminders to place their orders. Your rental will arrive a week or more before your event date,

and you’ll have 48 hours afterward to return it. If you need to keep it longer, there’s an extra fee. STANDOUT SERVICE No formalwear is complete without the right accents, and while Stitch & Tie offers the usual accessories to complete your outfit, its bespoke service is pretty innovative. It works like this: Mail in your fabric of choice, and their tailors will create a custom bow tie, tie or pocket square within four weeks. Let your groomsmen choose their favorite print, or send in a swatch complementary to your bridal party’s dresses to match. PRICE From $125, StitchandTie.com

Accessorize in Style Found your dress? Now it’s time for the fun part: adding accessories you love. Here, the comprehensive guide to pulling off a totally personalized look. BY SHELLEY BROWN

COTKRSS20_Sect_09_(131_150).indd 147

CLASSIC Simplicity is key to nailing timeless bridal style. For sparkle that won’t clash with a classic gown, invest in understated jewelry like pearl drop earrings, diamond studs or a thin tennis bracelet you’ll want to wear long after your wedding day. To make a more dramatic statement, consider crystal-encrusted or pearl hair clips, or a long, sheer veil with lace edging that matches the fabric of your gown. Looking to infuse a pop of color into your streamlined ensemble? Give a nod to the “something blue” tradition with a pair of baby-blue heels or a sapphire pendant. Another thought: Pair a black-velvet sash with your dress. It’s a bold accessory that creates a sophisticated contrast and accentuates your waist.

FASHION + BEAUTY Layer on lots of different bracelets for a cool, mismatched effect.

RUSTIC Give a nod to your outdoor surroundings with nature-inspired details in a stonewashed palette. Lush flower crowns with a mix of blooms or sprigs of baby’s breath are a great place to start. To add some sparkle to your ensemble, go for antique gold, rose gold or pewter jewelry embellished with raw gemstones or crystals. If you’re going all in, skip the fancy heels and opt for distressed boots in leather or suede. For fall or winter nuptials, keep warm with a faux-fur coat, denim jacket or textured knit wrap.

Saying “I do” with your toes in the sand? A seaside locale calls for effortless wedding attire and fun, colorful accessories. Freshwater pearls, tropical statement earrings, cowrie shell bracelets and delicate layered necklaces are right on trend. If you’re feeling bold, a straw hat decorated with local, fresh flowers makes for a cute photo. Where footwear is concerned, less is more. Forgo shoes altogether or swap out your heels for embellished sandals. If you want the added height of a heel without any of the fuss, white or metallic grosgrain wedges or platforms offer more stability on the sand than traditional stilettos or pumps.

ROMANTIC A touch more luxe than a rustic wedding, gauzy fabrics, floral embellishments and soft, pastel hues emphasize the dreamy feel of romantic nuptials. Whether you’re wearing a sexy, curve-skimming dress or a frothy, embellished ensemble, consider wearing a long, sheer veil for a dramatic detail that won’t distract. Or, channel your inner Renaissance heroine with a boho Juliet cap veil plus floral accents. Polish off your look with lots of whimsical jewelry (we love pieces that incorporate oversize flowers, butterflies and even bees), or focus on one statement piece, like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings.

150

VINTAGE This style can refer to a wide range of time periods, so first narrow down the feel you’re going for. Is it the sophistication of the ’50s or the glamour of the ’20s? If the former, a birdcage veil is a totally retro option and works with a variety of dresses. If you aren’t crazy about the idea of wearing a veil, hair combs and headbands with classic touches like lace or pearls also add polish to any hairstyle. To channel the glitz of the Roaring Twenties, opt for feathery and beaded headbands, art deco statement accessories and swinging fringe details. Vintage style also lends itself to old-fashioned jewelry. Repurpose your own family heirlooms or browse local estate sales and vintage stores to find special pieces with an antique vibe.

THE MAVERICKS

THE HISTORIANS Kerry Sullivan Smith + Dennis Smith

WHAT ’S IN A NAME?

Kerry Sullivan Smith “always felt a stronger connection to the name Kerry than to Allison,” her legal first name. Her parents chose the middle name to honor their ancestors’ roots to County Kerry in Ireland. “When I’ve told people that my legal first name is actually Allison, they’re always a little surprised and, more often than not, their reaction is ‘oh, but you’re SUCH a Kerry,’” Kerry says. “Your name kind of becomes you, and you kind of become your name.” When she got married, Kerry legally dropped Allison, and took her maiden name of Sullivan as her new middle name. The final step: taking on her husband Dennis’s last name, Smith. “In regard to changing my last name, my view of feminism is about having the agency to make the choice,” Kerry says. “I see taking Dennis’s last name as the opportunity for us to build our new family together. It’s the name the family we create together will identify with. To me, it’s a reflection of the fact that we love each other and want to build our lives together as a new family.”

As the definition of marriage evolves, so do the possibilities of what to call yourself. Couples of all kinds are finding unique ways to personalize the thing that literally personifies them, from creating a whole new name to skipping the change entirely. Now more than ever, the options are endless. Get inspired by how these four couples did it.

THE TS INDIVIDUALIS Ben Clos + Jared Nyhart OHIO

When Ben Clos and his now-husband Jared Nyhart talked about what to do with their last names, he admits he initially expected Jared to take his name. After all, Ben felt a strong responsibility to “carry on a family name and create a legacy” as the only son. The pair ultimately decided to keep their respective names, but with a caveat: They plan to give their future kids Ben’s surname. “By the time most people get married, they have an identity around their name,” Ben says. “There are lots of things we still do because that’s the way we’ve always done them, but new traditions can be made.”

Jasmine + Layne Braquez COLORADO

When Jasmine Vasquez and Layne Brace got married, they debated hyphenating their names but found the two just didn’t click when put together. Thus, they merged their names to form a totally new last name, Braquez. “My husband and I come from homes of single moms, so our last names had a lot of significance and worth attached to them,” Jasmine says. “I think our new last name helps both of us keep a sense of where we came from and who we were before marriage, and it gives us a strong, meaningful foundation.”

Sarah Zlotnick admits that she was “self-conscious” about her last name growing up, but after losing her father at 25, she wanted to carry on the legacy of the man who raised her. “My sister and I will be the last living people with the Zlotnick last name in our family, so though it’s kind of morbid, it’s important to me to take the Zlotnick name to the grave,” Sarah says. Together, she and her husband, Zach Harris, decided to pass on his last name to their children. “Zach places so much emphasis on the relationships in his life,” Sarah says. “If we can help imbue our children with the same values by emphasizing their place in the Harris clan, I’m more than good with that.” For his part, Zach is in total agreement. “I’ve always assumed she’s her own individual who will make her own choices,” he says. “I know how much it means to her to honor her dad in this way.”

make it legal Colorado Marriage License Requirements

GUIDELINES FOR OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE In Colorado, the legal age for marriage is 18 years old. Couples ages 16–17 must have both parents’ consent, and couples under age 16 must have parental consent and judicial approval. A valid form of ID is required, such as a birth certificate, passport, driver’s license or other government-issued ID that includes date of birth. Residency is not required. There are no general health requirements or blood tests required. If either party has been previously married, he or she must know the date of the divorce or death and the court where the final decree was issued; documentation is not necessary unless date of divorce was within the last 30 days. Couples should apply together, and both must sign the application. There is no waiting period to obtain the license, which is valid for 30 days in the state of Colorado only. The fee for a marriage license is $30, and methods of payment vary by county. Most offices are open Monday through Friday. Please call ahead to get all of the details. WHERE TO APPLY

LAST LOOK

I was so excited to see Risschie—and I think the feeling was mutual,” Emily says. “Our entire story has been full of surprises at every turn, and our first look rang true to that. It was the moment we got to take our first real breath and say, ‘Yes, this is my person and wow, do they look good!’ ”
