“What the world needs now is love, sweet love.” Burt Bacharach’s song kept popping into my head as we worked on this issue—especially when we locked ourselves in a candy store overnight to shoot our fashion feature (p. 180). It’s no secret we live in a tough world right now, and at times, it’s hard to see the love—but I’m here to tell you, it’s there and there’s a lot of it. I’m not ready to commit to invitations, but I want to send out my save-the-dates. Do they have to match? CARLEY RONEY: Not at all. It’s important to think about the big picture, but not if it stresses you out (and takes the fun out of planning). Lots of couples send out extra-fun save-the-dates that speak more to their personalities than set a style statement for what’s to come. Send photo save-the-dates using your engagement pictures, or if you’re having lots of guests from out of town, mail personalized luggage tags with your wedding info. If you have a special furry friend, use this as an opportunity to include them in your wedding with a cute photo or illustration, or even incorporate your proposal. If you said “yes” in front of the Eiffel Tower, have a sweet Parisian twist, or if it was during a quiet game night at home, replicate the board game with the basic info for the wedding day. How can I tell if possible vendors are LGBTQ friendly? BRIT TNY DRYE: No one wants to have that conversation of, “Oh, by the way, I’m a woman marrying a woman, are you cool with that?” To avoid that awkward, and possibly heartbreaking, exchange, there are ways to determine if a wedding pro is equality minded before even sending an initial inquiry email. Do a deep dive into their online presence. Does their website contain same-sex couples? Do they use gender-neutral language? Do their social accounts proclaim excitement for same-sex marriage or have photos of same-sex couples? You can always go back to June 2015 to see if they posted about marriage equality too. And you can also see if they’re a preferred vendor of, or have had work featured on, equality-minded sites like The Knot or Love Inc.

What are some budget-friendly activities to keep guests entertained at the cocktail hour or reception? MARY CHATMAN: If you’re having an outdoor wedding, include games like ring toss and Jenga. They’re fun and interactive, plus you can keep them for future backyard parties with friends. For the reception, Mad Libs or crossword puzzles at tables can be the perfect icebreaker to get your guests engaged in conversation. Don’t stress too much about providing entertainment during the reception— let your DJ or band take the lead and do what they do best. Remember: Dancing doesn’t cost a thing, and doing something like a soul train line is a great way to get guests on their feet and on the dance floor. You can even come up with your own routine to a specific song and teach your friends and family members as a way to ensure they’ll remember your wedding every time they hear that tune. >>

I’ve tried on so many different dresses and I’m feeling really overwhelmed—what should my next step be? MARK INGR AM: Relax! Sometimes women put too much pressure on themselves to find “the one.” You already found your perfect person, so finding the dress should be a joyful part of the planning process. Start by recalling the styles you were first drawn to—did you love every cap-sleeve dress you tried on? Focus on this silhouette next time you shop, and plan to go with just one or two people whose opinion you really trust, as too many can confuse you. A lot of brides actually find it easiest to make their final decision while shopping alone. Beyond that, consider your venue and what will work with the location, style and theme you’ve planned. Most importantly, focus on what makes you feel good.

My fiancé and I come from two different cultural backgrounds and are planning a fusion wedding. What’s the best way to honor traditions from both sides? SHAWNA GOHEL: There are so many ways to combine traditions, so have fun and think outside the box—whether that means choosing fashions from both cultures or choreographing a dance to music from each background. Start by looking at your families’ heritages to see if there’s any overlap between the two. If so, this can be a sweet shared ritual to showcase on your wedding day. Or choose one of your favorite customs from each side. Practice both or combine the two with a modern twist for a unique spin all your own. If you’d rather keep it simple, include a cultural element in traditional “I dos,” like adding Indian kundan jewelry to a classic white gown. Don’t be afraid to break the rules—do what feels right for you both.

I’ve heard a lot about airbrush makeup— should I consider it for my wedding? BRIT TANY LO: Airbrush is a popular option for bridal makeup, but it’s not for everyone. It really depends on your skin type. Consult with your makeup artist during your trial and see if they would recommend it for you. Then use your trial as a way to test the look. How do you feel about it initially? How do you think you look in it? How does it wear throughout the day? Both traditional and airbrush foundation should last all day, so try both to figure out which is best for you. In general, if you have normal to oily skin, airbrush may be a great choice, but if your skin tends to be dry, the makeup could get flaky. Another thing to consider is while airbrush application can be quicker, it can be harder to touch up after all those emotional happy tears. T R AV E L

HARMONY WALTON: While the tried-and-true boozy bachelorette weekend is always a hit, for a unique trip, seek out a locale that can pamper your group and offer fun activities a bit different from the typical beach day. For instance, Park City, Utah, and Beaver Creek, Colorado, have summer and winter activities that mix spa treatments and shopping with a bit of adventure. Skiing and snowshoeing will get your heart racing (and make a decadent hot chocolate taste even better), while an afternoon spent rafting and horseback riding is a good reason to enjoy a massage.
